very year at the end of August and the beginning of September, our once semi-quiet morning commute gets bombarded by the mass exodus of kids leaving their homes between the hours or 6am and 8am as they head back to school. Big yellow buses begin lining the streets, competing with parents to drop off their precious cargo. Crossing guards dust off their stop signs, while motorcycle officers hide behind bushes pulling cars over as they rush through school zones trying to make it to work on time. With all of the fanfare on the first day of school, many of us do not really stop and think how special this time is to our future. Whitney Houston said, "I believe the children our, our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way." Yet, teachers and administrators beg parents to take active roles in the development and education of their kids, especially the older they get. With a bumper sticker celebrating their child's academic accolades, [many parents] never talk to the child's teacher or counselor outside of the "Open House" before school starts. If every parent and/or guardian took the approach of "Handle With C.A.R.E.," the school system as a whole could be revolutionized forever. "Handle With C.A.R.E.� is a way for parents, guardians, teachers, administrators and students to work together for the betterment of the education process.

- Communicate - Talk to your child daily. As simple as this may sound, we often forget that our child may talk a lot, but that is their way of communicating. This is an opportunity to teach and learn a lot about your child. Also, communicate with your child's teacher at a minimum of once each month to ensure there are no gaps in communication. - Assess - As a parent, your job is to assess your child's opportunities, potential, friends and environment. Basically, this means you should be steering your child down paths that can help them develop and mature, while holding them accountable for choices they make and teaching them to finish what they start. - Respond - Many of us grew up under the regime of parents who said, we were guilty until proven innocent. Yet, many of us have a conspiracy theory mindset that our child's teacher has focused all of his/ her energy on making our child's school year miserable, without gathering all of the facts of the situation before jumping to a conclusion. If the lines of communication are open, behavior or academic issues will be addressed at the onset, so progress or report cards will not be the moment in which a parent notices a problem. - Excite - If you are not excited about life, your child will eventually take on your negative "Whoa is me" attitude at a young age. I understand life is not perfect, but if you can teach your child to adjust as life serves up lemons, they will be better at coping with life's pitfalls as they get older, and may have a better chance at dealing with critical life issues at a later age. A child should never carry the burden of an adult, so keep that in mind the next time you are having an adult conversation around your child. COMMUNICATION is the foundation of any

successful relationship, and without it that relationship will eventually erode until it no longer exists. Handle your child's school years with care. This is a time they can never get back and if you allow it to erode at an early age, it will be very difficult to rebuild what has been lost. We all know how hard this world has become, and if we do not prepare our child properly, we are limiting our child's possibilities of success. So, handle your child with "C.A.R.E."

CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER
anaging a schedule like mine isn't always easy. Between my responsibilities as an elder at my church, running my business, being a husband and father, a life empowerment speaker, and finally a traveling preacher, I am on the go quite a bit. As a result, one of the places that tend to go overlooked is my office. I'll be honest; it had gotten pretty doggone bad. But earlier this week I was somehow able to take some time “off the grid” to tackle this monumental task. What made me do it? I looked around and said to myself, “I'm tired of the chaos.” As I share this article I want every reader to understand that much of what I say will be both literal and metaphoric. Who knew that something as simple as cleaning up my space would provide valuable life lessons that could help people across the nation? So here are a few of the life lesson nuggets I learned.
1)
The key to clearing the clutter is to be tired of the chaos. Initially, I had to come clean (no pun intended) and realize that the level of clutter that was in my space was not a good thing. As long as it was tolerable to me it was never going to change. The same is true in our lives. We will never change the things that we feel we can cope with. Until we can no longer cope with them then we will never change them.

When it comes to clearing clutter, be careful because being preoccupied can keep us from protecting the sanctity of our space. After taking out two full bags of trash from my office, I realized that my day to day life had so consumed me, that I had allowed too much to build up around me. The clarity of your space should be viewed as sacred. Great care should be given to make maintaining it a priority.

We cultivate chaos when we keep clutter around us. Clutter is when we keep unnecessary things in our space beyond their set time, and when we mishandle important things, by dropping them off in the wrong place. When the important and the unnecessary fill the same space, the important stuff begins to look a lot like the unnecessary. Some people and things aren't given the care and attention they deserve because we mix them with things that no longer matter and we become “users” because we only seek them out when we “need” them.

When cleaning up your “office,” some things are obviously important to keep, but sometimes

it's not quite so obvious what needs to be thrown away. The decision to let go of the unnecessary is tough when we aren't sure whether or not we might need it again.

Clearing the clutter requires re-filing. Some things belonged in the forefront (active file) in the past, but now, although they are still necessary, they are only needed "as needed." So we have to be okay with the fact that it's okay to move them to the back. In other words, don't keep allotting priority space to things that are past tense.
6)
Clearing the clutter requires refining. Refining, to me, not only means getting rid of the excess but rethinking your action plan. What worked yesterday may not be the best strategy for today. Then again, it may still be an effective plan; but it has to be worked more consistently.
7)
Chaos is a killer of creativity. The condition of my office is similar to the condition of some people's life. They are confined by the clutter. I wasn't able to move around a whole lot in my office because so many things were in the way. I was able to function, but not be completely effective. By cleaning my office, I realized that my own chaos was killing my creativity. The moment I started putting things in place, creativity began to flow like crazy. I am a graphic designer. After purging and re-aligning my space, I accomplished so much until even I was amazed. I felt like a new man. My jubilant expression turned melancholy when I began to consider, “How much more could I have accomplished by now if I had cleared the clutter and killed the chaos sooner?” From that moment on, I made a promise to myself to make a more conscious effort to keep my space in order. If I am going to challenge others to live effective lives, it starts with clearing the clutter for the man in the mirror. That’s the best way for all of us to “MAKE IT COUNT.”

educing violent crime by removing handguns from the streets has long been the singular focus of firearm buy-back and amnesty initiatives facilitated by law enforcement agencies around the country. Recognizing that it really does “take a village,” Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings’ resourcefulness has him reaching for the hands of faith to help curb crime in Central Florida. Demings believes that one of the greatest partnerships in our community exists when law enforcement and the faith community link arms to stop the violence. Sheriff Demings speaks with GospelNOW about the strength of positive partnerships and its ability to affect criminal activity in our communities.
What can clergy and churches do to help stop gun violence, that is beyond law enforcement’s standard function? We are asking churches to increase their efforts to provide after-school programs for teenagers. This could include providing mentoring, tutoring, sports activities, job skills development seminars, computer labs for studying and other positive activities. In addition, we are asking the faith-based community to organize 40 day prayer vigils in high crime areas during the hours of dusk. The goal will be to call for a cease-fire and to stop the violence plaguing our
community. Deputies will be assigned to the areas to ensure the safety of all participants.
What affect have you seen in our youth from partnerships between law enforcement and clergy? Partnerships between law enforcement, the clergy and youth organizations help bridge communication gaps between the groups, and it creates opportunities for dialogue to formulate solutions to juvenile delinquency. The safest communities in America are those in which the community and police have strong
bonds.
How could this partnership help young people re-think the impulse to resolve disputes using guns?

In general, members of the clergy are uniquely suited to espouse non-violence and identify meaningful alternatives to crime and delinquency. Due to their religious influence and broad experience in counseling others, the clergy has unparalleled influence over the social development of children and families.
Who can gain the most from a coalition of churches and clergy taking a stand to stop gun violence? In the past, when there has been a concerted effort among community groups to proactively approach gun violence, communities throughout the nation have seen positive results in reducing gun violence in their respective areas.
Where do you find inspiration in the Bible, when dealing with terrible gun violence incidents like the random shooting of 15-year-old Danielle Sampson? There are two bible verses that inspire me to lead these efforts: 1) 1st Chronicles, Chapter 4 verse 10: “Oh Lord that you would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory, that your hand would be with me and keep me from evil, that I may not be in pain.” 2) Matthew Chapter 5, verse 9, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God.” I hope and pray that in my position as Sheriff that I can help bring the church, the community and law enforcement together, I think that is the key to keeping our streets safe. Are the Foods You’re Eating Making You Sick?
D
o you suffer from asthma, allergies, eczema, acne, fatigue, inability to lose weight, constipation or loose stool, brain fog, stiff or achy joints, migraines or a lowered immune system? Does your child experience chronic ear infections, complain of headaches, is hyperactive or has ADD? If so, you or your child may be suffering from Food Sensitivities and all of these symptoms are likely tied together. We’ve all heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” And living in Florida, we have lots of opportunities to eat healthy. However, did you know that you could possibly be eating “good” foods that are causing inflammation in your GI tract and triggering an immune response? It’s initially important to distinguish the difference between a food sensitivity and a food allergy. A food allergy is an IgE mediated Type 1 immune response. These reactions usually occur within a few hours of exposure to the offending food. Food sensitivities cause a different immune reaction. They cause an IgG mediated Type 2 immune response, and these reactions can vary from a few minutes to a few days. Many of my clients tell me of a prior history of "tests" for allergies, but things they were aware of and normally would react to, didn’t show up. This is because they were testing for IgG antibodies, not IgEs. Here’s what happens. When we consume a food that our gastrointestinal (GI) tract is ‘sensitive’ to, the same thing happens that happens on our skin when we brush up against something - the cells become red and inflamed which causes “leaky gut.” In a healthy gut, our 20

cells (enterocytes) are tightly packed together to protect us from invading toxins (this is also where about 75% of our immune system lives and also where those good probiotics call home). So, when the integrity of the lining of our GI tract is compromised, toxins and other particles begin to “leak” into our bloodstream where our immune system recognizes them as foreigners and develops antibodies. These antibody levels will continue to increase from repeated exposure. Most of this happens on a daily basis and we don’t have any symptoms. However, when our immune system is continually compromised, over time we eventually become sensitive to just about everything. Toxins & Our Environment
P
esticides, insecticides and herbicides are a part of everyday life; however, many who use these products are unaware of their consequences on the environment and personal health. Whether it’s a mild headache, chronic fatigue syndrome or breast cancer, these chemicals play a role in all disease processes. Although large levels of these chemicals are needed to produce acute poisoning, low levels of these residues can have dire health consequences. The average American is exposed to six or seven different pesticides every day from foods. Exposure to such chemicals is associated with higher risks of developing cancer as well as other illnesses. Examples of these commonly toxic chemicals include the herbicide atrazine and the pesticide oxychlordane. Atrazine is commonly used in the US for weed control, despite its link to reproductive abnormalities in fish and amphibians. In humans, atrazine has been shown to increase the enzyme cAMP-responsive cellular kinase SGK-1, which is known to be up regulated in infertile women. This chemical also alters hormone networks to potentially disrupt normal endocrine development and function in most vertebrates. Oxychlordane, a metabolite of chlordane, is one of the most toxic of the chlordane compounds. Its ability to accumulate in the body and its toxic effects caused its ban in 1988. Even though it has been close to 20 years since the ban, chlordane is still detected in some foods grown in the US. Chlordane was most commonly used as a pesticide against termites as well as a pesticide for lawns and gardens. Another pesticide commonly used is Fipronil. Fipronil is a member of the phenyl pyrazole class of pesticides. It is used for crops, public hygiene, amenity and veterinary pests. One of the major problems with Fipronil is that when it degrades it results in the metabolites Fipronil Sulfone, Fipronil Sulfone and Fipronil Desulfinyl. These metabolites have been determined to be much more toxic than the parent compound to various organisms, such as freshwater invertebrates, avian species and fresh water fish. These metabolites are also very persistent in the environment and do not degrade readily.

Children are more susceptible due to the fact that the blood brain barrier does not fully form until after the age of two, so any toxin, such as pesticides, insecticides and herbicides, can move directly to the brain. Such exposure has been linked to ADHD, allergies, asthma and even autism. A study published in Pediatrics in 2006 looked at the effects of chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate insecticide that inhibits acetylcholinesterase, also known as Dursban and Lorsban, on 3 year neurodevelopment and behavior in inner-city children. They found that children exposed to the insecticide scored, on average, 6.5 points lower on the Bayley Mental Developmental Index. Those exposed to the chlorpyrifos were also more likely to experience more attention problems, including ADHD and pervasive developmental disorder problems. Another study from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that children who live in homes where indoor or outdoor pesticides are used face a far greater chance of developing leukemia.
Alternatives to Chemicals Fortunately, these chemicals are not necessary to keep pests away. There are many alternatives to everyday pesticides, herbicides and insecticides. Some natural products used to deter and kill pests you might find in your very own pantry; these include, garlic, lemon, eucalyptus essential oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon oil. Other natural insecticides and herbicides include pyrethrum (which comes from the chrysanthemum), rotenone (from the derris plant) and Diatomaceous Earth (from the remains of plankton). These substances work in many different ways, such as causing dehydration, suppressing the appetite, paralysis of the nervous system and deterring the pests. You can also purchase pre-made natural pesticide, herbicide and insecticides at many stores. W
hen meeting the needs of the parishioners and community take center stage, koinonia, intimate fellowship by participation is the result. Superintendent Derrick W. Hutchins of the New Life Church of God in Christ believes that genuine fellowship and authentic relationships are catalysts for healthy church growth. In the excitement of expansive transition, Pastor Hutchins takes a moment to share with GospelNOW the motivations behind the movement in his growing Central Florida ministry.
You are an accomplished, seasoned pastor whose exposures and experiences have allowed you to witness some of the transitions and reformations that characterize modern-day religion in the United States. Statements made in recent reports indicate the U.S. is now more spiritual than religious, in that many people believe in a supreme god, but do not belong to any church or denomination. Do you recognize any apparent indicators in our culture that support or refute this claim? I believe people are tired of church as usual; they are looking for something more than rituals of denominationalism. With studies indicating fewer Americans are sitting in the pews today, what do you believe society is saying to the church? The average church has less than one hundred attending each Sunday; however, there are flourishing congregations all over the world who understand their mission clearly, “to know Him, and to make Him known.� We must make a church a loving and forgiving place where people care about one another; relationships and not religion.
I believe society is saying we need healthy churches; a healthy church is like a healthy body, if it is healthy it will grow. There are some diseases that prohibit a church’s growth. When we know and remove the causes of a church’s disease, the body will heal itself. Here are few diseases: Ethnikitis – this is a disease where [there is] an allegiance to one ethnic group and a lack of openness to others. Our church is multicultural. People Blindness- this is the inability to see spiritual, social, and community needs. The key to an effective church is to find the need and meet it, find the hurt and heal it. The church that looks in its community and meets the need and finds the hurt will grow. Koinonitis – this disease is toxic relationships. The word Koin[onia] means fellowship; the relationship between church members is important. No one wants to be in a church where people don’t get along. Social strangulation- this refers to where the physical facilities are not capable of providing growth. You can’t put 12 ounces of milk in a 6 ounce glass. Some people visit the overcrowded church and never return. Arrested spiritual Development – this disease is when a church stops growing internally, it ultimately stops growing externally, with a lack of prayer, and a lack of bible study. Internal growth is the foundation for numerical growth.
What responsibility do you believe rests on the shoulders of the “church” in shaping the community’s conscious in regards to how ministries and churches are perceived? The church must be designed to find the need and meet it, find the hurt and heal it. There must be vibrant ministry after the Sunday morning worship experience. Is the church experiencing hindrances in reaching the “un-churched;” and if so, will you identify some of these hindrances? The un-churched can be reached; but, “He that winneth souls must be wise.” It will take a healthy church to accomplish this. A church must be healthy in all areas to be a growing body of independent members. Would you consider your ministry to be progressive in its efforts to reach the un-churched? The church must be a resource center for the poor through developing job training programs and financial management classes along with parenting
skills, and home ownership seminars; ministries that address the needs and heal the hurt of families, aide in the prevention of teenage pregnancy, and the elimination of drug abuse.
The faith community throughout our country, and perhaps globally is experiencing transition and transformation on many levels, including leadership and location. What are some of the exciting events that characterize recent transitions in your ministry? We are thankful to God for our motivated exponential growth which has us moving to a larger auditorium to accommodate the crowd. New Life is a friendly, welcoming, loving, environment. What do you imagine the impact will be? We are excited about moving to Wekiva Auditorium (Wekiva High School, 2501 N. Hiawassee Road, Apopka, FL 32703). It should link us closer to the community, by the saints’ efforts to assist with our youth, mentoring/alliance with our parents, assisting with the prevention of teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, truancy, and early dropout rate. A healthy church will help people grow spiritually, financially, and emotionally. How would you summarize the “New Life” worship experience? Definitely not church as usual – Powerful, Practical, & Positive. We laugh a lot, church is fun, fellowship is exciting and inspiring, people are friendly and children’s church is off the chain. he shock that shook the world on September 11, 2001 will forever remain a historical marker in the hearts of citizens, co-workers, friends, and families of victims around the globe. An event too monumental to forget; yet, too perplexing to completely process 11 years later, still draws our attention to that dreadful September that we will always remember. The average citizen in any country, on any continent, a part of any culture, can more than likely reference the place and activity they were engaged in, when news of the travesty we now call 9/11 occurred. The permanent reference serves to remind us of our country’s vulnerability; and the victimization of innocent people who were simply proud Americans, working to support their families. Every life lost could have represented a hope deferred, a dream unrealized, a vision unfulfilled; but instead, in the face of gross adversity, hope has risen from the ashes, dreams are becoming realities, and visions are being manifest. These average citizens, under normal circumstances, would have slipped into anonymity without anyone seeing their daily sacrifices or ever knowing their names. Suddenly, EVERYTHING changed. Their names and lives now represent a nation’s monumental effort to remain free, brave, and beautiful. Although the way we transact business, the way we travel, the way we regard strangers, and the way we present ourselves have changed; terrorists were not banking on the one consistency that will never change…the resilience of the human spirit. The impact of their efforts was great; but the eternal affect of their plot has been foiled by the indomitable spirit of America’s citizens who gathered the strength to forge ahead by the all-sufficient grace of God. As we remember the victims, families, and heroes impacted by the attack on our nation; may our prayers for peace and protection never leave our lips, as we remain the land of the free, the home of the brave… America the beautiful.

Recipe of the Month
STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE Ingredients Crust: 10" Pie Pan 2 Cups Graham Crackers (Crushed) 1/3 Cup Sugar 3 Tbsp Butter Filling: 16oz Cream Cheese (Softened) 3/4 cup Sugar 1 tsp of Vanilla Extract 2 Eggs Topping: 16 oz Sour Cream 1/2 cup Sugar 1/2 tsp Vanilla 1 package Frozen Strawberries (Sweetened), thaw the Strawberries for better results
Directions 1. Preheat Oven to 375 degrees 2. Crust: Melt the butter and combine ingredients. Pack using the back of a wooden spoon into the 10" Pie Pan. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browning. Set aside 3. Filling: If the Cream Cheese is still cold, place it in a microwave safe dish (without wrapper) and heat for 10-15 seconds or until soft. In a large bowl, cream the sugar, cream cheese and eggs (Add the eggs one at a time and don't mix the second one quite as well.) 4. Pour into crust and bake for 20 minutes. 5. Topping: Combine the Sour Cream, Sugar and Vanilla. Mix well. Mix in 1-2 cups of strawberries. Blend and add to top of Cheesecake. Bake for 5 more minutes. 6. Chill for several hours and enjoy! This is one of my favorite strawberry cheesecake recipes and it is so easy. 43

Focus on the Good M
ost people have something physically about themselves they don’t like; whether it be eyes or feet, maybe even lips or hair, the fairest person wants something to be altered, changed, or covered up, never to be seen by anyone other than themselves. Well, as long as there is more than one person in this world, whatever one doesn’t like about themselves someone else will eventually see and realize what it is. Now you might be saying “not me, I’m fabulous and I love myself, flaws and all.” That’s GREAT, but there are a few thousand people who aren’t there yet!
Oftentimes, the beauty industry displays people that don’t look like you or I, and these images can begin to make people feel like they don’t measure up. Well, I’m here to let you know that I want you to focus on the good and the importance of rethinking beauty! “Focus on the Good” is more than a cliché, it’s a way of thinking that has to become a lifestyle. There has to be something in your situation or about yourself that will cause you to say this is good, it is what it is and I’m okay with it. Whatever it is, you must get to that real honest place deep inside yourself and know that what you are saying is true. As a makeup artist, I work with so many people and I have made it my mission to encourage and inspire the idea of focusing on the good. Clients come to me because they want to see change, they want to look better, and/or different and I can do that for them; but it is also important that I bring out the good, the features that they want to accentuate. Then there are the times when I work with people who don’t
see anything; and that is when I make the move to point out all the good things I see and how he/she needs to begin to see it also. In beauty there are so many products and things that make promises and claims to “fix” what we don’t like about ourselves, and month after month I also tell you the best things that work to improve your outer appearance. In all of this, one thing has to be done before you purchase another product or go into another shopping mall and that is focus on the good. Look at yourself and really focus on what it is you see and begin to accept the person looking back in the mirror. It may be hard at first, but anytime you being to positively focus in you, things will start to look better. I say don’t see your features as strange, they’re unique; and your look isn’t t plain it’s rustic and original. Whatever you decide, focus on the good and love who you are! www .G ospel NOW. net
