Gosford Times 22nd October 1915 Regret to report the death of Private W. Jones in Liverpool Field Hospital. Private Jones gave his name in for enloistment at the recruiting meeting, held here about six weeks ago, and was accepted. After being in camp some little time he contracted measles and pneumonia, from which he died. Much sympathy is felt by all for his uncle (Mr Mills) and family. Private Jones was a member of the local cricket club, and was very highly respected.

Gosford Times 29th October 1915 [From Our Correspondent] A memorial service was held here last Sunday, in memory of the late Private Jones, a large congregation being present, which spoke highly of the respect of our late comrade. A very stirring and sympathetic address was delivered by the Rev. F.R. Todd, taking his text from the second book of Samuel, twenty second chapter and sixteenth verse. The pulpit was draped in black with wreaths and flag etc.

Gosford Times 6th October 1916 JILLIBY [ From our Correspondent] The unveiling of the head-stone erected to the memory of the late Private Jones, will take place next Sunday afternoon about three o'clock. Everyone invited to come along. â&#x20AC;Ś.

Gosford Times 13th October 1916 JILLIBY [ From our Correspondent] The unveiling of the headstone erected to the memory of Private w Jones took place last Sunday afternoon in the presents of a large number of residents of Wyong and Jilliby. The stone (which is a book stone and tiled all over the grave, and purchased from Messrs Meldrum and Markey, of Newcastle), was covered with the Union Jack. Mr Pattinson, the president of the committee, opened the ceremony with a brief speech, stating the delay og getting the stone, &c, after which he called on Messrs A Wamsley and W Russell to unveil it. Mr W Smith Junr., Mr Jones (our local school teacher and military instructor), and Mr R Boyd, also delivered brief speeches, and all spoke highly of the young soldier who though he had not been able to go to the front, did his duty and died in the service of his King and Country. Mr Pattinson apologised for Messrs W A Chapman and A Wilkinson, who were unavoidably unable to be present. The cost of the stone was £21. 15s. And as the sum of 22s 3d was still owing on it a collection was taken up. The sum of £2.2s.3d was thrown on the flag, leaving a balance in hand of 20s, which will be donated to the next send off held at Jilliby. The singing of the National Anthem concluded the ceremony. The inscription on the stone reads;- "To the memory of Private William Jones, who died at Liverpool Camp, 17th September, 1914, aged 18 years. He arose responsive to his country's call, but, alas, was nipped off in the bud. Erected by Mr Mill and friends" Another one of our young men has enlisted, Mac Smith, of "Brookland Farm, and is now in camp.
