Odd Man Out: A Cabaret

From the day we’re born, we’re always told that we are special and unique. What we’re not told is that certain kinds of special and unique are considered wrong and potentially offensive, and shouldn’t be allowed out of the house. Unless you’re Gareth Isaac, in which case you’ll probably stick to your guns and end up singing songs about it for a living. Join Gareth for an evening of music, laughter, and some really important questions about art and life. Contains moderate content. Suitable for ages 15+. Saturday 7 January, 7pm All tickets $30 Kayla Strada presents

Love Is...

A film by Kayla Strada: Just before Christmas, in the storied “City of Love”, San Francisco, Nick and Maddie meet at the Palace of the Fine Arts, and after a clumsy yet charming exchange, they fall instantly in love. Both still reeling from prior relationships, neither are prepared for the pace of their passion which leads them down a winding road of philosophical battles on the subject of love. Without communicating clearly, they find themselves caught in a tango of wits. Their love stalls. They misunderstand each other and engage in a damaging argument about the true meaning of love; whether it should be expressed in words or actions. That is until one fateful night when a visitor lands on Maddie's doorstep and changes everything. “An hilarious, sexy, touching and even heart breaking examination about the true meaning of love.” Friday 13 January, 8pm. All tickets $15

In 1998 in Laramie, Wyoming a young man, Matthew Sheppard was brutally beaten and murdered due to his sexuality. Four weeks after the murder, the Tectonic Theatre Company travelled to the town to collect interviews from its residents. They returned six times over a course of eighteen months and interviewed over two hundred residents, as well as keeping personal journals. Through transcribing, editing and workshopping, the process resulted in The Laramie Project play. This is not simply a play about a young man who was murdered due to his sexuality, but a play that enables us to look at how we may see similarities and differences in ourselves and in our own community, in comparison to what happened in Laramie. To this day, the play is one of the most performed pieces of theatre in America and is used as a catalyst to initiate dialogue within communities. Friday 10 February, 7.30pm, Saturday 11 February 1pm and 7.30pm, Sunday 12 February, 1pm. The final performance will be followed by a Q&A session with the cast and director.
