beyondBeanie Rock A Beanie. Change A Life!

G

ood Mood Shopper is honored to have beyondBeanie featured on the cover of the September Issue. We love their social conscious brand methodology. So, I asked the founders (Hector (Tito) Alvarez and Paty Lucero) of beyondBeanie to participate in a Q&A interview. They said YES, below are the answers to our questions. 1. What’s Beyond Beanie mission statement? For every item purchased, beyondBeanie will help a child in need in Bolivia. Beanies = Meals | Bags = School supplies | Ponchos = uniforms 2. What’s beyondBeanie’s goal? (Tito) When Paty and I were having our very first conversation about creating beyondBeanie, we really wanted to start a company that would not only serve to bring consumers unique, high quality clothing accessories that they love wear, but that would also serve a greater purpose, which is to help fight poverty in Bolivia. According to the WFP, it is estimated that as much as two thirds of the population in Bolivia live below the poverty line. The devastating situation makes it very difficult for parents to raise, feed and educate their children. (source: http://www.wfp.org/countries/Bolivia/overview). Therefore, the idea and goal was to create a social enterprise that would help Bolivian children, while at the same time provide work opportunities to artisans, especially women, who are among the most impoverished and vulnerable groups in Bolivia. 3. What was your greatest motivation to create beyondBeanie? (Tito) Being Latin American myself (I’m originally from Chile), I can truly say that I take great pride in the progress that this continent has made to eliminate poverty over the last two decades. Nevertheless, there are still large sectors, especially around the Andes region where Bolivia is located, that need lots of development in terms of child education, nutrition and to some extent also women’s empowerment in order for the country to evolve and alleviate poverty.

Rock A Beanie!

It was during my trip to Bolivia last year where I could see all this from a local’s perspective what gave me the motivation to want to start beyondBeanie; a social clothing venture dedicated to helping children in need and artisans in Bolivia. 4. Can you share a story about the artisans who make your products? (Paty) At present, we are working with two groups of women-artisans, one from La Paz and another one from Cochabamba. Most of them come from challenging backgrounds, many are trying to raise their children as single parents, some are HIV positive, have little or no education and suffer from incredibly low self-esteem. They don’t have people in their lives to encourage them and tell them how amazing they are or what a sensational talent they have to produce such masterpieces. Indeed, we are trying to help empower these amazing women as much as possible with the help of consumers, whom by looking at the name tag found on each product can easily know who made it, go to our website, and send an “encouragement” or a simple “hello” message to her artisan. One of the amazing stories that I can share is the one of Rosalia Machicado. Rosalia is a single mother of five children who was abandoned by her husband shortly after their fifth child was born because she was diagnosed with HIV. Ever since her husband left her, she has struggled every day to provide for her children. Before joining beyondBeanie, her daily life consisted of going to the streets of La Paz and try to sell her creations to tourists. She has explained to me that many days were extremely challenging, barely earning enough to put food on the table. She is extremely happy that she is now able to knit for beyondBeanie, that she gets to sign every product that she makes, and that she get recognized for her work and is able to provide for her children. The messages that she received from beyondBeanie’s consumers have really uplifted her spirit and she takes great pride in her work. 5. Lastly, do you have any tips for future social entrepreneurs? (Tito) Many people have great ideas about how to help the world, yet most never put them into action. My advice is simple: Take the plunge and forget about uncertainty! You will never know the potential of your idea unless you decide to try it.

Last summer my mother lived on the streets. This taught me an invaluable lesson because my mother is a hard working woman. She has two college degrees, had managed restaurants, was a homeowner, and raised us two kids on her own. Yet, life got the best of her. She lost nearly all she had due to unfortunate circumstances and moved across the country to start her life over. My beautiful mother had become homeless. It was then that I realized that not all choose to become homeless - that some just need a second chance.

MORE THAN A MAGAZINE READ MAGAZINES: GIVE LITERACY By: Clarissa Fletcher

59 goodmoodshopper.com

I

t was that time again, time to plan the September Issue for Good Mood Shopper. Just as I did for the August Issue (first issue), I ventured out to email ethical and give back companies about being featured in the upcoming issue. The August Issue featured 27 amazing ethical and give back brands that have completely changed the world through fashion and shopping for a purpose. As I visited their websites to read their stories and seek new fashion and shopping goodies for our readers, I started to relate to their causes again. Each brand had a mission and purpose statement that was accompany by an incredible story! However, what was truly Good Mood Shopper’s story? What was truly our mission statement? Good Mood Shopper was created to spotlight good companies and people that makes a difference in their communities. I wanted the magazine to become more than just a magazine and to have an even greater impact on the world. I love promoting good brands and their amazing causes. But if our ethical and give-back companies can team up to accomplish life changing goals. What’s stopping Good Mood Shopper from doing the same. So, I went to my computer to research non-profits that would fit our mission. And, I found several. However, it was one in particular that I felt suited the company more. This non-profit was Magazine Literacy. Magazine Literacy is a non-profit that sends new and “gently read” recycled magazines to new readers through their literacy program. Magazines can be donated by donors or sponsored by companies or consumers can give the gift of literacy. They provide free magazines to at-risk children and families. Every magazine that is sold via Blurb will help to provide literacy for children and families in need through Magazine Literacy. I hope that you continue to support Good Mood Shopper as we change the world one magazine at a time! “Read Magazines: Give Literacy”

Ix Style

FASHION WITH PURPOSE By: Ansley Vasconcellos

Y

ves Saint-Laurent once said, “Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.” I believe these are some of the truest words ever spoken; as women, who we are as a person is far more important than what we wear. I also believe that what we wear can be used to reflect who we are and what we believe in. By choosing clothing that supports a cause, we can be both fashionable and socially conscious. It’s what I call fashion with purpose. But I haven’t always thought this way. Like many people, my style changed many times throughout my life; from red cowboy boots accessorize with paint from my hands to bell bottoms and crimped hair. And matching clothes has never been my forte. As a matter of fact, I’m wearing two different socks right now! Looking back, my style has been very random but it has had its hand in shaping who I am. It started the summer before I graduated high school with a red T-shirt and a pair of khakis. At the time, I thought I wanted to be a nurse so I signed up to volunteer at Kennestone Hospital. I quickly realized there was an interesting juxtaposition within a hospital. One moment I would be wheeling a mom and her wide eyed newborn out of the hospital and into the arms of a caring father then the next minute I would be transferring a man who just went through surgery from one room to the next. One moment there’s the first breath of life and the next moment there’s people fighting for their lives. I realized that although I loved helping people, my heart couldn’t take it. I had so much respect for everyone who worked there yet I knew it wasn’t my path to take. I tucked away the red shirt and khakis and searched for my next venture. Fast forward to my senior year of college. Graduation was so close I could almost taste it. Typically, it’s the actual act of graduating that marks a monumental change in people’s lives, which was true, but in retrospect there was an even greater moment of change in my life. It all started when I overheard my roommate’s conversation. She was friends with Jessica Ekstrom, founder of Headbands of Hope; for each headband sold, one is given to a girl with cancer and $1 is donated towards the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for childhood cancer research. Jessica had asked her to be a campus rep for our school. I was so intrigued with the idea I immediately volunteered to run the social media for her. I’ve always enjoyed helping people or companies amplify their business. The fact that it was for a good cause was an even bigger bonus. It was the first time I realized that social media marketing could actually be utilized for far more than marketing products. We were able to touch people’s lives that we wouldn’t otherwise have come in contact with. We were able to make an impact in our college community and the world beyond it. The moment we had a girl tell us that she was a three time cancer survivor and thanked us for our work, I knew there were far greater things in the world than anything I had planned leading up to senior year.

These past experiences lead to my belief in fashion with purpose and starting Braided Bliss. Currently, it’s a fashion blog featuring products from charitable organizations and causes to help raise awareness. Wearing fashion with a purpose is one of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced. Every time I put on a shirt, a bracelet, a scarf, or a beanie, I can feel the hard work and dedication that was poured out into each one. I’m not just wearing an accessory or piece of jewelry; I’m wearing someone’s hopes, dreams, and their pursuit of happiness. I’m playing a much larger role than being a consumer. I’m making a difference one fabric at a time.

No. 41 AFRICA

N

o.41 started on a whim and a prayer in March 2012, with the intent of teaching young women from the Noel Orphanage in Gisenyi, Rwanda (ages 18-25) not only to sew, a culturally relevant trade that would always sustain them, but to give back to their community through a feeding program supporting local schools. The first No.41 bag was sold in May 2012 and today we employ 20 women from the orphanage, as well as 10 from the surrounding village. We have 8 mamas better caring for their 12 children and 19 of our young women are now enrolled in university. In February 2013, No.41 opened our first feeding program, providing a hot, healthy lunch to 900+ students and teachers, daily.

95 goodmoodshopper.com

Changing The World Our girls were created for a purpose by God.

MISSION No.41 is about empowering young women. Our goal is not to give them the world, but to show them that God has already given them everything they need to go out there and take it. When you join with us, you are truly changing the world FOR ONE. In our village there are three secondary schools, grades 7-12, and these students go to school all day, most without eating. The schools, generally, offer a 20-minute break for lunch where children who live close enough or have money, may go home to go to the market to eat. Most do not. All that has transpired at No.41 is beyond our wildest dreams. We have had ten girls move themselves out of the orphanage and we now have 19 enrolled in university. We have career fairs and business trainings, bible study and English class.

Make sure to follow No. 41. on social media!
