Heritage Gonzaga Will ...

It’s an intriguing idea, yes?

A commitment for

ZAGS TO COUNT ON

At Gonzaga University, opportunities abound in support of our Catholic, Jesuit, academic community. For some, like Jim (’65) and Raeceil Day, the power of mentorship and investing in student scholarships fuels their Gonzaga Will.

Beyond Borders

BEYOND A LIFETIME

There are those like Dan Harbaugh (’70), who transform the world with their Zag spirit, creating opportunities for global engagement both at home and abroad. Others, like Bruce (’85) and Jackie Worobec, find inspiration in Gonzaga’s academic programs and the innovative ways GU students and faculty pave the way.

keeping it

CLOSE TO HOME

And finally, there are those like Jim (’71) and Pauline (’70) (Martin) Bresnahan, whose lives were so impacted by Gonzaga’s community that they have made plans to ensure that future generations have an opportunity to experience GU’s unforgettable community. This is the core of Gonzaga Will: The Campaign for Our Future. We have highlighted four stories of Zags in this special edition of Heritage along with the ways they are choosing to leave a legacy with GU’s future in mind. We are grateful for their Gonzaga Will in action. Your generosity, too, will ensure Gonzaga continues to provide a strong relevant Jesuit education for generations to come. You are our Heritage. Your Legacy is our future. Thank you, Judy Rogers

UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE

2016

Promising futures for all Jim Day (’65) was introduced to Gonzaga by his high school bookkeeping teacher, Keith Rostvold (’50), a WWII veteran who went to Gonzaga on the GI Bill. Rostvold recommended Gonzaga, and Dan Brajcich specifically, as the best accounting professor in the Northwest. Day’s relationship with Brajcich evolved from professor and student to mentor and protégé and then to friends. Brajcich helped Jim get a job with a National CPA firm, provided advice in managing his career during the first few years, and worked with Day professionally along with Joe Keyes (one of Gonzaga’s first lay Trustees) at Radar Pneumatics. Brajcich’s influence and the Gonzaga education in business and liberal arts, along with the exposure to philosophy, logic and ethics provided a foundation that enabled Day to progress from a junior auditor to senior vice president and chief financial officer over his 32-year career. Brajcich asked Day to volunteer for the Puget Sound Business Forum in 1985, which led to a connection with Carrie Ridgeway (’92), a Zag who was was referred to Day for help finding a job in the Seattle area. He helped Carrie and several of her friends in 1992 and formed what became GAMP in 1993, recognizing the opportunity for alumni to help students find good jobs. Gonzaga Alumni Mentor Program has worked with thousands of students and is currently expanding to help in finding internships. Day has personally worked with more than 1,000 GU students and alumni, helping them define what they want to do and how to make it a reality. It has been a passion and purpose for him all these years. Gonzaga now has more than 2,500 alumni mentors and several Career Treks, during which students travel to cities like Seattle, Portland, New York, and San Francisco to visit companies and network with alumni. Together with his wife, Raeceil, the Days have leveraged their successes by establishing a charitable gift annuity (CGA) to benefit both Gonzaga and themselves. A CGA is a gift that provides quarterly “life-income” payments, with what remains going towards the Jim and Raeceil Day Scholarship Endowment at Gonzaga, which has been providing students with scholarships since 2014.

The Days exemplify the kind of community support that makes the Zag Scholarship Promise possible. Dedicated alumni, families, friends, faculty and staff are helping students of all financial situations realize their dreams of attaining a Gonzaga education and the incredible alumni network that comes with it. “My experience with Gonzaga did not end upon graduation, in fact our grandson is a sophomore there now” said Jim. The Days’ hard work and generosity are ensuring that the same can be true for Zags long into the future.

Give a GIFT and Receive INCOME Make a gift today that allows you to benefit now and the remainder will benefit GU. Options include: • A charitable gift annuity provides fixed quarterly payments for as long as you live along with an immediate income tax deduction. Also, a portion of each payment is tax-free! •

A charitable remainder trust provides an immediate tax deduction and income for life (or a term of years) that varies annually based on the fair market value of the trust. An added bonus is the ability to bypass capital gains tax when gifting appreciated property.

Transforming the world with Zag spirit It was 1967. Bishop of the Diocese of Spokane Bernard J. Topel, Ph.D. was coming to Gonzaga University to address students about the way things were changing on campus, like students’ preference for strumming guitars in the student chapel rather than playing the piano or organ. Among the 700 students packed into the Kennedy Pavilion (now The Martin Centre) to greet the bishop was Dan Harbaugh (’70), a political science major from Gooding, Idaho, a town of 3,000. “Everybody stood up as the bishop came in wearing his clerical garb,” Harbaugh recalled. “He was visibly impressed and emotionally overwhelmed by the crowd. We showed him that we weren’t trying to upset anything; we just wanted things to be relevant to our experience. That’s also happening right now. Gonzaga’s core values are still the same.” As an alumnus of both GU and Gonzaga Law, and a member of the Board of Regents, Harbaugh makes a concentrated effort to connect with today’s students. Developing relationships, growing faith and global engagement are top priorities for students today, which Harbaugh views as great opportunities to share the Zag spirit. “St. Ignatius once said, ‘Go forth and set the world on fire.’ That should be the direction Gonzaga graduates have when they leave this school. Whether that means here or anyplace else in the world.” Harbaugh also believes there is a bit of magic in the Gonzaga experience, so much so, that he was inspired to include a gift in his will for the University. “There’s a transformation that goes on here,” he said, “and I want to facilitate that. If I can leave what I’ve worked for all these years to others where it will help and benefit mankind, then that’s truly important. Leaving my ultimate gift through my will and by continuing to give annually, I’m returning a very small portion of the riches I received from Gonzaga.”

Dan Harbaugh (’70)

way I did,” he recalled. “I think there’s even more of that on campus today. I really believe part of our mission should be to bring people from all over the world together because there is so much they can teach us.” “I’m enthusiastic about giving something back, because Gonzaga gave me a tremendous amount.”

Gift Through Your Estate Designate a portion of your estate to Gonzaga through a bequest in your will or trust. Sample language: “I give to the Corporation of Gonzaga University, a Washington State non-profit corporation, headquartered in Spokane, Washington, the sum of $ (or % of my estate, or the property described herein) to be used for (specify the purpose, e.g. endowed scholarship, unrestricted, a specific program, etc.).”

During his own time as a student, Harbaugh was drawn to the opportunities to expand his horizons. He felt blessed to make friends with international classmates while living in Alliance House. “The way they grew up was totally different from the

360°: student to faculty One week before they were married, Bruce Worobec (’85) brought his fiancée (now wife) Jackie to Gonzaga for his 10-year reunion. “I immediately loved the beautiful campus,” she recalled, “the welcoming atmosphere and the camaraderie Bruce shared with his fellow Zags.” Bruce appreciated those elements of the University, but a decade earlier, when he first chose to come to Gonzaga, he had a very specific consideration in mind. “I had to ponder the likelihood of a drive-by visit from my parents,” he stated. Originally from Tacoma, Wash., Bruce found Spokane to be adequately far away from home. “That was my mindset back then.” Bruce’s logic has since shifted, as have the reasons and ways he and Jackie support Gonzaga. They have built a relationship wherein philanthropy plays such a large role, they chose to support future Gonzaga students through a gift to Gonzaga in their estate plans. “My folks saved to pay for tuition and I received a lot of financial aid when I was here,” he said. “Somebody paid for me, and I’ve leveraged that into having the resources to pay it forward.” Jackie added, “We support organizations that are well-run with a proven track record of mission-related success. Giving to GU, we know that our gift will be used to improve our community by preparing future generations to be productive and philanthropic members of society.” Bruce is also paying forward some of what he received from GU as faculty of Computer Science. He considers it a “bucket list” opportunity to teach for his alma mater, giving him a firsthand view of the ways in which Gonzaga is innovating in its academic programs. Bruce’s experience as both a student and faculty member has made a lasting impression that makes he and Jackie feel good about investing in the University’s future.

Jackie and Bruce Worobec (’85)

“Students receive a top-notch education coupled with an atmosphere that encourages them to look outside themselves to improve the world,” she said. “It is important for us to help prepare students for rewarding careers while also inspiring and fostering participation as good citizens in our communities. We hope our gift allows GU to continue growing without losing its special charm. We want future generations to continue experiencing small class sizes, individualized attention from instructors, and the opportunity to find their place in the community.”

Love for Gonzaga community runs deep After four years of basketball eligibility at Gonzaga, Jim Bresnahan (’71) was serving as a graduate assistant when he and his wife Pauline (Martin) (’70) moved into a small apartment in what is now The Martin Centre. “It was a perk of the job,” Pauline explained. In the two years they lived there, she and Jim watched over the gym, and helped with event set up and take down, including several concerts for up-and-coming artists. John Denver, Kenny Rogers and many others came through on the Bresnahans’ watch. “Frank Zappa wanted to borrow our telephone,” she recalled.

One thing the Bresnahans have retained from their own unforgettable experience is an appreciation for the people and the philosophy that makes up the Gonzaga community. “When you leave Gonzaga, you leave with lifelong friends,” Pauline said. “The Gonzaga bond is for a lifetime.”

When the Bresnahans met on the GU campus, Jim was a basketball player and Pauline was a cheerleader. They would see one another during cheer practice in the gym, where Jim would often be shooting hoops with friends. He had also been known for cruising up and down Boone Avenue in an fire blue muscle car. “It was a brand new 4-speed 383 1969 Roadrunner,” Jim remembered fondly. His roommate teased him about the real reason that he drew Pauline’s attention. “He would say, ‘the only reason she’s dating you is for that car,’” she laughed. “He had to eat his words when we got married and sold that car.”

Pauline (Martin) (’70) and Jim Bresnahan (’71)

The Bresnahans’ love for the Gonzaga community runs deep to this day. They regularly attend basketball games and their three daughters attended Gonzaga-in-Florence. Jim and Pauline also made GU the owner and beneficiary of an insurance policy. “My career is in financial services,” said Jim, “and I saw gifting a paid-up insurance policy as a way to multiply our giving.” When the policy matures, according to the Bresnahans’ wishes, Gonzaga will establish an endowed scholarship for students attending Gonzaga-in-Florence. “We want Gonzaga to continue to grow and thrive,” said Pauline. “And we want our gift to make a difference by allowing students to have an unforgettable experience.”

Gift of Life Insurance Policy Make Gonzaga University the owner and beneficiary of a paid-up life insurance policy you no longer need. Or designate Gonzaga as a primary or partial beneficiary of a life insurance policy. GU’s Legal Name: Corporation of Gonzaga University Tax ID Number: 91-0236600
