Gonzaga University’s

2012

Patrick (Pat) Morris, and the Morris family, exudes what it means to be a true Zag. Pat Morris graduated from Gonzaga in 1950 with a degree in Civil Engineering that launched a successful CE career. Pat remained very faithful throughout his life in his contributions to Gonzaga and was always incredibly proud to be a Zag alumnus.

When Pat passed away in 2004 after a battle with cancer, his family established an endowed scholarship in his memory to benefit Gonzaga students. The Patrick Morris Scholarship has now reached the fully endowed level and the memory and legacy of Pat Morris is honored from this point forward in perpetuity. Other members of the Morris family have committed to adding to the scholarship through planned estate gifts as members of Gonzaga University’s Heritage Society.

In recognition of your commitment to the future of Gonzaga University.

Caleb Erb (‘14), first recipient of the Patrick Morris Scholarship, in Herak Engineering Building

The first Patrick Morris Scholarship award was given this year to Civil Engineering student, Caleb Erb (’14). Caleb, the first member in his family to attend Gonzaga, always knew that Gonzaga had a very strong engineering program. But, he was also convinced that he and his family could not afford the tuition without scholarship help. Even so, Caleb’s mother encouraged him to apply.

After reviewing financial aid packages, Gonzaga offered him enough scholarship money, which included the Patrick Morris Scholarship, work-study funds and student loans, to have the total cost come out to less than local public colleges. “It was a no-brainer for me to come to Gonzaga,” Caleb explains. “The time I have had at Gonzaga has already been such a blessing to me.” Pat’s sister was able to meet Caleb in person recently. “Meeting Caleb was one of the biggest thrills of my lifetime,” she said. “Pat would have loved meeting Caleb, as they are so alike, but I know he would be so pleased to see the scholarship was put to good use and that we really are helping to pass it on and pay it forward.”

Thank you Estate gifts from the following alumni and friends were gratefully received between June 1, 2011, and March 15, 2012. These gifts will have a significant impact on student scholarships, academic programs and faculty support. Mildred Coombes John F. Driscoll Elizabeth M. Father

Coughlin “There are many of our alumni, parents, and friends who realize the truly great achievements in their lives are not the mountains they have climbed, fortunes they have made or records set, but the good they have done in helping others.” Bernard J. Coughlin , S.J.

Q&A with the Founder of Gonzaga’s Heritage Society Q: What inspired you to start the Heritage Society? A: We are all interconnected, and we cannot survive without one another. The Heritage Society was founded on that premise. Its members, alumni, parents, and friends – living and deceased – are now making it possible for future generations of Gonzaga students to have the education they had. Heritage says it well: We are all heirs, inheritors from previous generations; we have all received and now have the opportunity to give back so that others may receive as we once did. Q: Why are estate gifts important for Gonzaga’s future? A: Each year thousands of promising young men and women seek the opportunities that Gonzaga University has offered for 125 years and it’s our turn now to make possible for future generations of Gonzaga students what others made possible for us.

During his tenure, he oversaw construction of a half-dozen buildings, raised the University’s academic profile and grew its endowment from $1.6 million to $50 million. By founding Gonzaga’s Heritage Society in 1980, he has made a lasting impact on this Jesuit institution and continues to serve the University as its chancellor.

Q: From your experience, why do alumni and friends support Gonzaga? A: For many, giving is not an ego trip, nor recognition among peers, nor about charitable deductions and tax savings. Part of it is the sense that you are your brother’s keeper. Part, too, is that wealth is not among their most valued possessions; that all goods are God’s gifts, and grace exceeds them all; that His gifts are for giving; and that God is at work in them all.

Anna Mae (Vomaske) Waldron was born in Spokane in 1919 and was raised in the Gonzaga University neighborhood, referred to back then as “The Holy Lands.” Her parents were married in St. Aloysius Church in 1916. They met at a St. Joseph’s Parish dance. Vomaske family members were all dedicated and devout members of the St. Al’s church family. They lived in a turn of the century home that was originally built by the Jesuits at 714 E. Mission Ave. Anna Mae was a career woman. After graduating from Marycliff High School in Spokane, she worked a number of years in private industry, including five years at Kaiser Aluminum in the Public Relations department, and 30 years for the Federal government. While working in Washington D.C., she used her vacation time to volunteer as a tour guide traveling to a number of foreign countries. Anna retired from the Budget and Finance office of USDA in Washington, D.C., in 1978 and moved back to Spokane to be close to her parents. She met and married Bob Waldron and they enjoyed 15 years together before he passed away in 2005. Although Anna Mae did not attend Gonzaga, she had three brothers, two of whom attended the University. Her husband, Bob, was also an alumnus of the University through the V-12 program during WWII. A believer in the power of a Jesuit education, Anna Mae is a member of Gonzaga’s Heritage Society and established, upon her passing in 2010, the Vomaske Family Scholarship through a bequest. The Vomaske Family Scholarship is in memory of her family and in honor of the Jesuit teachings at Gonzaga University.

Lyons Family Jesuit Academic and Administrative Services Endowment • Created by the late, Yvonne & Robert Lyons, Sr. who were inspired by their belief in the ideals expressed through a Jesuit education. • Purpose is to provide ongoing resources to support hiring members of the Society of Jesus to serve on either the faculty or administration of Gonzaga University. • As an endowment, you can add to this fund which will live on in perpetuity. Please contact us at (800) 388-0881 if you would like to make a gift to this fund. Photo credit: Rajah Bose

Anna Mae also gifted a portion of her estate to the Lyons Family Jesuit Academic and Administrative Services Endowment. For Anna Mae, the presence of Jesuits on campus was essential to the student transformation process, which prepares men and women to serve others.
