Words from Guy

Welcome to 50 Years of Bloomington Gold!! We are excited to have you celebrate this special event with us as we return to Bloomington IL, the town where it all started 50 years ago!

We have one heck of a weekend planned for you! For starters, join us Thursday night at the Gold Gala when we unveil the 2023 Gold Collection: A Salute to Corvette Z06 presented by Corvette Central. The Corvettes we have this year truly make Bloomington Gold the Granddaddy of Corvette shows. Many of these Corvettes have not been seen by the public. And some that very few have seen. There are also two 2023 Z06’s that are just weeks old.

While there are so many things about Bloomington Gold that I love, my favorite has to be the people that attend our Event each year! It is our shared passion for the Corvette that brings us together one weekend in June each year.

We hope that you enjoy Bloomington Gold this year! And, if you do, be sure to spread the word to all of your fellow Corvette lovers about the Greatest Corvette Event on Earth!

Be sure to stop by Camaro collection housed in Horton Field House. This is a great chance to see some impressive first-generation Camaro’s and even learn a little about the Corvette’s cousin. We look forward to seeing you there. The 2023 Gold Collection is proudly presented by:

Introducing the cars that make up the 2023 Camaro Collection!

1969 L78 Pace Car

Owner: Brad McAdam, Churchville NY

This Rare 1969 Pace Car is the only L78 - 396/375 hp Pace Car imported and sold new in Canada. GM kept records of all cars imported into Canada and a search of the records for the Chevrolet Pace Car book by Hooper and Crispino confirmed this. I bought the car from the second owner who gave me the information on the original owner. She was a school teacher who bought the Pace Car In January, 1970. I obtained old color photos of the car from her and listened to her stories about the car.

The L78 Pace Car was optioned like the actual Indy Pace Cars, including with the very rare seat belt shoulder harnesses on a convertible. Another rare option is the engine block heater. The Pace Car has its original engine its original CX coded turbo 400 transmission, and its 3:08 geared posi rear axle.

A frame-off restoration was completed in 2018.

Page 10

1998 Sport Gold Metallic Camaro

Owner: Patrick & Carol Lewis, Iona MI

This 1998 Sport Gold Metallic Camaro, SS convertible is one of only 7 built. It was purchased through Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Michigan and the Lewis’ are the original owners. The color was used for only one year. While there were only 7 Camaros built in this color, they tried to replicate the color on the Corvette and only built fifteen Corvettes total in this color.

1969 Camaro Z28

Owner: Dan Penovich, Naperville IL

This Norwood Ohio built (X33) Z28, is a very original example with the exception of the wearables, and the paint which was restored in its original shade of Garnet Red (52-52) in 1997. The Black Custom Deluxe interior is unrestored, and the original carpeting is still in place.

Since it rolled off the assembly line on February 14, 1969, it has accumulated 71,000 miles but its condition, as shown here, demonstrates the great preservation efforts of the previous owners. This Z28 was delivered new at Albrecht-Hamlin Chevrolet, Inc. in Woods River, IL.

With warm weather here, now is the time to put insurance back on your Corvette for the season. But are you really using the right insurance for your vehicle?

Collector’s Insurance Vs. Traditional Car Insurance: WHAT YOU NEED TO

KNOW

Not everyone knows or understands the difference between Collector Car insurance vs regular insurance. And, that it can save you money! To learn all the in’s and out’s read on.

The differences between classic or antique car insurance and traditional auto policies are distinct, salient, and important. Though they may seem subtle or generalized at first, being familiar with these differences can make or break a collector’s investment in the event of a loss.

Here at American Collectors Insurance, we are well-versed in the inadequacies of traditional auto policies as they pertain to classic or antique automobile protection. The list below is a compilation of the most important distinctions between the two that you need to know about if you are a classic car collector.

Agreed Value vs Actual Cash Value Claim Settlement: The settlement value on a total loss claim is established in the policy. A collector car policy generally uses Agreed Value provision (where you and the insurance company agree on the collector car value before the policy starts). A regular auto policy generally uses Actual Cash Value provision, where the total loss settlement value is established after the loss occurs. Agreed value provides the additional peace of mind of not having to be unpleasantly surprised at the value your claim adjuster calculates on your classic car.

Vehicle Eligibility: When identifying a collectible automobile, classic car insurance companies typically requires the vehicle be no less than 15 years old, with some mandating an age of at least 25 years. However, cars are collected for several reasons, whether they are limited editions or specialty vehicles. A collector’s insurance policy takes this, and many other relevant factors into consideration that traditional auto insurance companies do not. Many insurers do not insure vehicles older than 25 years old on a regular auto policy.

Restoration Improvements : Many collector car owners have made substantial investments to personalize, preserve, restore, and improve their car so that it is different (and more drivable) than when it left the factory. In general, unless vehicle upgrades were previously disclosed and endorsed onto a regular auto policy, most regular auto insurers limit their claim repair scope and the value of their settlement offer for “total loss claims” based on the original equipment that was installed on the vehicle. You may be surprised at the settlement offer you receive on a nicely restored classic car after a total loss claim. Improvements include but are not limited to:

• Drivability improvements: upgraded suspension, installation of power steering.

• Performance improvements: upgraded engine, transmission upgrade.

• Safety Features: upgraded disc brakes, LED lighting upgrades.

• Comfort improvements: installation of air conditioning, upgraded interior finishes, and/or

• Visual improvements: special non-factory paint colors, additional customizations.

Stop by the American Collectors Insurance booth in Horton Field House to discuss your coverage in person!

Josh Holder

The VIP’s

Josh Holder joined the Corvette team in 2002. As Corvette Chief Engineer, Josh is responsible for the engineering, development and launch of all 8th generation Corvettes. His job is to make sure product decisions exceed customer expectations for performance, technology, and value. The revolutionary eighth generation Corvette has been the fastest selling and most awarded vehicle in history.

Josh started his GM career in 1999 as a Manufacturing Engineer in Body Assembly Systems working on full size SUVs and trucks. He has held various positions on the Corvette team including Manufacturing Engineer, Designing Engineer, Program Validation Engineer, and Program Engineering Manager. He has contributed to the last four generations of Corvette and holds patents in body structure design.

Raised in Northwestern Montana, Josh’s passion for Corvettes began at a very early age. His parents purchased a 1973 Corvette and were very active in a Corvette club. In grade school, Josh knew that he wanted to be an engineer working on Corvette.

He and his wife Angela (who is also an engineer at GM) share a passion for Corvettes and currently own six of them ranging years from 1964 to 2006. They enjoy seeing the country during cross country-road trips. Josh enjoys outdoor activities including hiking and downhill skiing and of course the occasional track day in a Corvette.

John Kraman found career success as a sales manager of autos and then aircrafts, and he is a licensed Federal Aviation Administration pilot and mechanic. He joined Mecum in 2006 and is now the director of company relations and the company spokesperson at public events.

As the supervisor of Mecum’s on-air talent, John further utilizes his skillset as a commentator and analyst for the televised coverage of Mecum auctions on MotorTrend and MotorTrend+.

In his spare time, John enjoys tending to his personal car collection, spending time with his wife Christine, four grown children and five grandchildren, and also performing in the classic rock trio, Redline 7000.

Celebrating 50 Years of the 1973 Corvette

1973 marked the 20th anniversary of the Corvette and the first design change to the C3 since 1968. However, due to the need to meet increasing government mandates in the auto industry, the Corvette experienced significant performance reduction in the early 1970’s resulting in the standard 1973 Corvette having 210 HP.

Corvettes are known for their speed but also for their safety. 1973 marked a number of safety related changes including a steel beam in the door to protect passengers from a side impact. The addition of radial tires made for easier handling at increased speeds, but they also increased stopping time. One of the most notable changes to the 1973 Corvette was the front bumper. The 1973 production year marked Corvette dropping the chrome bumper for a front “rubber bumper”.

Fact: This front bumper redesign was actually in response to yet another federal mandate for a 5 mph impact-absorbing bumper, which Chevrolet designers placed under a body-color injection -molded urethane cover.

Help us celebrate the 1973 Corvette turning 50 and stop by the Gold Year display located in the East Lot with the dealer displays!

Calling all 1973 Corvettes! We want your Corvette to be a part of the 2023 Gold Year display! All participants will receive a commemorative Gold Year window sticker and placard. Cost is $25 per day and includes a one day pass.

Solid Axle Corvette Club to Hold National Convention at Bloomington Gold in June

The Solid Axle Corvette Club is hosting their 2023 Annual Convention at Bloomington Gold this year. Do you want to learn more about this group of First Generation Corvettes? Stop by their booth located in Horton Field House!

What is a Solid axle Corvette?

The rear axle housing on all 1953 to 1962 Corvettes was a one-piece shell. The rear differential (rear

gears) and the axles were mounted within this rear axle housing. (The rear axle housing is sometimes called a solid [or straight] axle housing.)

Beginning with the 1963 model year, Corvettes had an independent rear suspension (IRS). The rear differential is built into the center housing: universal joints and short shafts (called jack shafts) transfer power to the rear wheels. Each rear wheel reacts independently to the road surface and has earned the nickname “rubber axle”.

The 1953 to 1962 Corvettes were unique, that’s for sure. They shared many suspension and power train (engine, transmission, and brake) components with Chevrolet passenger cars. With a fiberglass body, all the body parts and exterior trim were Corvette-only items.

The late model Corvette owners (1963 and newer) laugh at the old solid axle Corvettes and call them dinosaurs. There have been many articles written about the pokey six cylinder engines in 1953 to 1955. However, those comments are taken out of context. While not the fastest American car in 1953 and 1954, Corvettes held their own, and did even better with the V8 in 1955. (1955 Corvettes were built with both 6s AND V8s.)

The truth is, the 1953 to 1955 Corvettes WERE crude. GM was learning about fiberglass car body construction, and the Corvette improved greatly for 1956. Corvettes got better every year. With a favorable power to weight ratio, 1957 Corvettes were very good performers. By 1962 body fit was good, as was exterior finish, and the mechanical components were refined and dependable. Powered by a 327 cid engine, the ‘62 has become a favorite.

Above is an excerpt from the SACC website and was written by Noland Adams.

The Value Authentication Brings to a Corvette

Something all of us want when making a purchase, especially a large or expensive one, is that we get what we are actually paying for. In other words, we want what we are buying to be authentic. When we go to a jewelry store and look to buy a diamond, one of the key factors in making the decision to buy is whether the jeweler can prove that the diamond is in fact authentic.

To the naked eye, a rock may seem like a priceless, rare diamond. Yet someone that is a total stranger to us, yet deemed an expert jeweler, can often look at the diamond and immediately determine if it is authentic and the value it holds on the market.

While jewelers have a process and even tools to prove that what they are selling is authentic, how do buyers of collectible cars get the same reassurance from the seller?

One way to determine the authenticity of a Corvette is to look at the certification that the car has received. This includes judging awards and proof

of Certification to name a few. How does a Corvette receive these valuable and often prestigious recognitions? Through a very thorough judging process, such as the one at Bloomington Gold.

For example, at Bloomington Gold, judging is done on four sections of the car: the exterior, the interior, the chassis and the engine compartment. In addition, the fundamentals are judged which include manufacturer tags and numbers. These together all determine the legitimacy of the car. If the Corvette meets all of the set standards, it becomes certified.

As a result, a Bloomington Gold Certified Corvette is recognized as a high ranking and authentic Corvette with the best “report card” of all the Corvettes, adding value to the car and putting it at the top of the list at the auction.

2023 Bloomington Gold Certification Housed in CEFCU Arena!

Have you ever wondered what the Bloomington Gold Certification process looks like? Come watch from the stands in CEFCU Arena Friday and Saturday morning!

What are the different categories of Bloomington Gold Certification?

GOLD CERTIFIED® means that a Corvette has been “preserved in” or “restored to” within 95% of the way it appeared when it left the factory...no better, no worse, no different. Appears as it would have just after completion of ‘Typical Factory Production’.

SURVIVOR® recognizes Corvettes that have been preserved and highly unrestored. These Corvettes are “worn in but not worn out”.

BENCHMARK® is America’s most prestigious Corvette award - the ultimate standard for unrestored vehicles. To achieve BENCHMARK® status, an unrestored Corvette must attain GOLD CERTIFIED® and Silver or Gold SURVIVOR® in the same weekend.

Resto Mod Certified - A Bloomington Gold Certified® Resto Mod is a Corvette that is modified more than 50% in all four of the following sections: engine, chassis, exterior and interior.

Camaro Gold Certified® - 1st Generation Camaros will be judged using the same guidelines that are used for Corvettes: A Camaro Gold Certified® car appears as it would just after completion of “typical factory production”.

2023 Bloomington Gold Presidential Award Recipients

John Carlson, Joplin MO The Voice of Bloomington Gold and Information Booth Consultant

John Carlson has worked at every Bloomington Gold Show in some capacity since 1974. Early on he worked as a volunteer parking Corvettes in Gold Field. A few years in, he was systematically volunteered to read the show announcements in between his parking of the cars. Over the years he became the Voice of Bloomington Gold and an expert in everything Bloomington.

John is also the Voice of Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in November each year as well as Display Coordinator at Mecum Auctions.

David Burroughs, El Paso IL Founder of Bloomington Gold, SURVIVOR®, Benchmark Certifications, & Special Collections

After going to car shows where only one car would win, David developed a judging system where every car had a chance to achieve the top award, thus was born the Gold Standard® of Judging. In 1978, the Gold Standard of Judging was implemented into an all-Corvette event that David had started in 1973, called the Corvette Corral, later to be renamed Bloomington Gold. While many people recognize David as the founder of Bloomington Gold, it is equally important that he is recognized for founding Bloomington Gold judging, which today, is still an important component of the event.

Al Grenning, Boonville NY Division Director Stamp and Tag Team

Matching numbers. Broach marks. Pad stampings. Casting dates. VIN and trim tags. ECL codes. Protect-O-Plates. Terms that glaze one’s eyes. Al Grenning’s unique skills have helped “pilgrims” better understand these very important clues before plunging into a high risk transaction.

Grenning is the single most respected authority decoding these arcane and obscure terms. He has collected tens of thousands of photos, copies, and tracings of this data in his library—all for the purpose of helping determine the authenticity of a Corvette’s identity.

Without his dedication to collecting, analyzing, organizing, and publishing much of this data, the Corvette community would be subject to rampant forgeries and disinformation relative to rare and desirable Corvettes. His contributions and research data have been incorporated within the intricate judging systems unique to the Corvette community.

A NEW VENUE FOR CERTIFICATION JUDGING IS COMING IN JANUARY 2024!

Bloomington Gold Corvettes will host Certification Judging in Kissimmee, Florida January 2024. Scheduled for January 9 & 10, Gold Certified®, SURVIVOR® and Benchmark® judging for Corvettes of all generations will be offered to owners.

The two days of judging will be held during the Mecum Kissimmee auction so that it allows owners and judges the opportunity to attend the Mecum auction as part of their weekend in Kissimmee.

2024 will not be the first time that Bloomington Gold has held certification in Florida. Certification judging was held in Kissimmee in January of 2021 when Bloomington Gold was unable to hold their October event in Charlotte, North Carolina due to the pandemic. Registration for Kissimmee will open in the coming weeks. It is also noted that 2024 Kissimmee will replace the Charlotte event in 2023.

KISSIMMEE

In addition to Kissimmee, Bloomington Gold also holds Certification Judging as part of their National Car Show in June in Bloomington, IL. Registration for Certification in Bloomington this June is OPEN and filling. Registration for Certification in Kissimmee will open this Summer. Click here to be notified when it opens.
