MISSION We nurture the unique potential of each student through an exceptional Jewish and general studies education.

VISION Innovative Jewish thinkers begin their journey here. Our students explore the world through the lens of Jewish values and develop a love of learning, a personal relationship with the State of Israel and its people, and a commitment to the betterment of the world through tikkun olam.

‫מצוות והלכה‬

We inspire a love of learning and encourage intellectual curiosity across all disciplines. Students learn to think creatively and independently in a community infused with Jewish tradition and values. We establish a strong partnership between students, teachers, parents, and the community beyond the classroom and campus. Our vibrant learning community focuses on the intellectual, social, and spiritual needs of each child. We encourage a shared responsibility for treating others and ourselves with respect and dignity. Our students and faculty practice empathy, menschlichkeit, and integrity when interacting with others. We empower our students to develop an ongoing personal connection to Israel by studying its history, its culture, and the Hebrew language. Students learn the importance of Israel both in the classroom and within the land itself.

Our students learn the importance of communal responsibility and service both locally and globally through acts of tikkun olam (repair of the world) and gemilut hasadim (expressions of loving kindness). We inspire our students to find joy and meaning in Torah, Tefillah, rituals, and practices, including the teaching and celebration of lifecycle events, holidays, and traditions within our school community.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear GOA Community, It is a great honor and joy for me to greet you as the new Head of School at Golda Och Academy. During my first months on the job I have been struck by the extraordinary skill and commitment of our faculty and staff, both veterans and newcomers. As we enter the third academic year marred by the Covid pandemic, it is important to appreciate how much effort and care has gone into keeping our people safe and our programs vibrant. I am grateful to the prior administration and the entire team for their successful leadership in the 2020-21 school year. Looking ahead I would like to highlight five important initiatives: •

COVID-19 Safety. Our new health committee has worked to update protocols for the year, mandating universal masking and vaccination for the staff and for all eligible students. We enter this year with a multi-layered approach to safety for our students and staff and are meeting the heightened challenges of the new variants with seriousness and resolve. We are pleased to have a team of three medical experts advising our school during this time.

Enrollment. Our greatest institutional priority is to expand enrollment, which includes both the retention of current students and recruiting new students. Our new admissions team led by Sari Allen and Jessica Wise is already expanding our reach, and we have commenced site visits to partner schools, JCCs and synagogues.

Faculty Excellence. Great schools are defined by great teaching, and GOA is committed to recruiting, retaining and supporting the professional development of the best teachers in the world. Our new GO Forward campaign is bringing new resources to clarify our definition of faculty excellence, to recognize and reward master teachers. This is a major multi-year project, and the benefits will be felt in our school for many years to come.

Student Support. At the beginning of the 2020-21 school year, Lori Jaffe became our new Director of Student Services, and we have recently hired new learning specialists and guidance staff for our students on both campuses. Our school mission is to “nurture the unique potential of each student,” and this requires special attention and resources. In the coming years, the GO Forward campaign will allow us to further expand such services in fulfillment of our mission.

Capital Improvements. Over the summer, we completed an expansion of the Dr Lynne B Harrison STEM Center at the Eric F. Ross Upper School campus. The physical space was expanded, and new equipment installed to make this extraordinary asset even more valuable for our students. We are also working to establish enhanced outdoor learning spaces this year so that we can eat, play and pray in a safer environment. Beyond that, we are exploring additional improvements to the Upper School campus to make it as pleasant and useful a space as possible.

I look forward to getting to know all of our students and their families. Wishing you and your family a wonderful new year of exploration, insight and joy. L’shana Tova,

Rabbi Danny Nevins 1

From The Board Chair

FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dear GOA Community,

It is my great honor, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, to wish each and every one of you a good and sweet New Year. Last year witnessed extraordinary accomplishments by our administration, faculty, and staff in keeping our school open and enabling in-person education and social development for our students. Our GOA employees merit our special gratitude for their extraordinary dedication and exhaustive work during the pandemic. As always, they put our students first, and we are so appreciative. I wish to thank our extended GOA community for your exceptional financial support and ambassadorship during the past year. Golda Och Academy is a shining light in the world of education for its scholastic excellence and instillment of qualities of kindness, compassion, and concern about the broader community. We thank our new administration for its devoted work throughout the summer to get ready for the coming year. May G-d bless Rabbi Nevin’s stewardship of this wonderful academy and may we all have a school year filled with good health and great joy. Warmest regards,

Keith Biebelberg

‫תורה לשמה‬

LOVE OF LEARNING

Torah Lishmah

Throughout 2020-21, our greatest success during the pandemic was our ability to provide in-person learning, five days a week, for all of our students. Our entire faculty and staff rose to the challenge while our students and parents adapted and adhered to new health and safety protocols. In a world where many students were learning remotely, or having in-person classes a few times a month, we were truly blessed to provide our students with this opportunity.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT

DONOR SUPPORT 2020-21 — THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE Dear GOA Community, As I write to you, I am reflecting on the past year, a year like no other in the history of our school since our founding in 1965. Thanks to the dedication of our faculty and staff, we managed to stay fully open for in-person instruction all year during the pandemic and kept our students engaged, supported and learning. When we look at the state of education in our country and even the schools around us, we don’t take this accomplishment for granted. We are incredibly grateful to all of you — our donors who have increased your support throughout this difficult time and helped to make this possible. We hope that you and your families have remained healthy and well during this time. We have missed seeing you in person! Last year, in accordance with our COVID-19 health and safety policies, we were not able to host any visitors or guests in our buildings. So instead, we sponsored four virtual unique community events: Fall Havdalah, Winter Havdallukah, Spring Grandparents Kabbalat Shabbat and Shining Bright: A GOA Spring Benefit in June. Each event featured and spotlighted our talented students and alumni and celebrated the strength of our GOA community during this unprecedented time. It was truly wonderful and heartening to see so many of you on our Zoom screens from as near as West Orange and as far away as Montreal and Israel! At our special event in June, we had the opportunity to thank our outgoing Head of School Mr. Adam Shapiro for his dedication to our school and to our community over the past 18 years. As we prepare for the new school year of 5782/2021-22, we are excited to have welcomed our new Head of School Rabbi Danny Nevins. In the weeks and months ahead, Rabbi Nevins looks forward to having the opportunity to share his vision for our school’s future and to meet all of the members of our special GOA family — donors, alumni, parents and grandparents. Thank you to our entire GOA community whose steadfast commitment to our school and our mission has kept our school strong during this crisis. We wish you all good health and happiness in 5782! L’shana Tova,

Stephanie Bash-Soudry 4

KEHILLAH

In April, we we couldn’t have been more excited to welcome the incomparable a cappella group Six13, featuring GOA choir director Mr. Craig Resmovits, for Lag Ba’Omer concerts on both campuses. It was a beautiful day for Lag Ba’Omer festivities, where students paticipated in a host of activities together, including a BBQ picnic lunch and the annual 5th grade versus teachers newcomb game. The concerts were made possible thanks to the generous support of the Arie and Eva Halpern z”l Fund for Jewish Heritage.

GRANDPARENTS and GRANDFRIENDS KABBALAT SHABBAT

In April, it was so wonderful to bring so many of our GOA Grandparents and Grandfriends together for a meaningful musical Kabbalat Shabbat celebration, featuring a beautiful d’var torah, songs and solos from our Golden Ochtaves choir, special videos, and a grandparents blessing to children. We appreciated all of our Upper School students for leading us so beautifully!

TEACHING EXCELLENCE

FORMER STUDENT DANIEL S. OCH PLEDGES $10 MILLION CHALLENGE GIFT This past March, Head of School Adam Shapiro announced a transformational $10 million challenge gift by the Jane and Daniel Och Family Foundation to support Golda Och Academy’s efforts to significantly invest in teaching excellence. This gift will establish the Dr. Michael Och Fund for Faculty Excellence, an endowment fund named in honor of Dr. Michael Och, the father of Daniel S. Och, husband of the late Golda Och z”l and dear friend of our school. This important new fund is part of a larger vision for faculty at our school and will allow for the creation of a new faculty investment initiative. The Och family’s gift represents one of the largest investments in faculty among Jewish day schools in the United States. The $10 million challenge grant continues the Och family’s history of supporting Jewish education, beginning in 1965 with Golda and Dr. Michael Och’s leading role in the founding of the school, which Dan and Michael Och visited Golda Och Academy’s Wilf Lower School Campus outdoor classroom with students in 2015. was then called the Solomon Schechter Day School of Essex and Union. Golda Och held a variety of roles during her decades-long career at the school, including business manager, Board president and, most notably, as a beloved Jewish history teacher. Following her death in 2010, the Jane and Daniel Och Family Foundation pledged a transformative $15 million challenge gift focused on affordability and academic excellence, prompting the renaming of our school to Golda Och Academy. In response to that challenge gift, our school raised an additional $17.5 million and established one of the largest affordability endowments among North American Jewish day schools. Jane and Daniel Och said, “We are proud to be a part of the school’s mission and to be in a position to support the faculty. Nothing is more important to our children and our society than committed educators, and we feel privileged to work with 8

them. With all that has occurred in the last year, education has proven to be a cornerstone of stability and the maintenance of future opportunity. We are honored to have our father recognized at an institution that reflects his values and belief in supporting the Jewish community and providing an exceptional education to tomorrow’s leaders.” Stephanie Bash-Soudry, Director of Institutional Advancement said: “We couldn’t be more grateful to Dan and Jane for their investment in our faculty in honor of their very special father Michael. We are excited about the initial response of the community to the challenge and the tremendous impact this new campaign will have on the future of our school.”

In March, we were incredible honored to have Dan Och meet with our GOA faculty and staff via Zoom. It was thrilling to have the opportunity to hear him speak more about the transformative $10 million challenge gift that our school has received from the Jane and Daniel Och Family Foundation. In addition to reminiscing about the teachers who inspired him when he was a student in our school, Dan explained firsthand why he and his family have decided to support this incredibly important initiative to benefit our faculty.

DONOR PROFILE Dan Fulop z”l ‘92

The Dan Fulop ’92 Creator, Maker and Innovation Endowment Fund was established to celebrate the 43 years of life of Daniel Adam Fulop (1974-2018) – with a purpose to provide resources to encourage Golda Och students to be creators, makers and innovators in the spirit of a beloved alumnus Dan Fulop ’92. The father of Alexis (‘22) and Amber (’26), Dan was a beloved husband, father, son, brother and trusted friend and colleague. Solomon Schechter Day School of Essex and Union was keystone to Dan’s life, and he frequently attributed his success to the school’s sense of mission — to become a responsible, caring citizen and a committed, knowledgeable Jew. Intellectually humble but equally as restless, Dan’s innovative behaviors began as a kid. His parents, teachers and childhood friends would call him “Danny” and remember him for being kind of a scientist, as he would dismantle and reassemble antique cars, build multi-level tanks for exotic fish, construct by hand a fruit and vegetable garden complete with irrigation, and with an insatiable appetite for new toys, Dan would research online incessantly for new tools, parts, equipment, gadgets and wires to purpose. Not to be outdone by his technical skill, Dan was equally as inspired to create (and enjoy) things in his home - annually crafting his famous and quite delicious smoked turkey for his favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, which was never without his favorite desserts such as Hungarian krémes. Dan was a creator. In college, Dan was the one to “make things happen” — balancing both passion and persistence with a kind and gentle heart. Dan was both a fierce evaluator as well as negotiator. In business, there was not a deal that Dan couldn’t make — he traded, invested, bartered. As natural as can be, Dan took his willful skill to reach incredible heights as a global executive assigned to one of the most prestigious projects in the US — “Hudson Yards” where a plaque commemorating his work hangs. Despite his love for work and endless trips around the world making monthly visits to his office in Shanghai, Dan never returned home without a suitcase packed with goodies for his three incredible loves: Elissa, Alexis and Amber. No day was complete without a text, or FaceTime call. Dan loved to travel the world and was often planning the next family vacation, anywhere from Thailand, to skiing in Colorado, relaxing on the beach in Aruba or touring Israel. Whether he was building a shed or chopping wood in his backyard or smoking meat for family and friends, Dan’s infectious personality made him the go-to guy for anything and often would make “projects” in everyday life, especially with his brothers Steven and Richard. Dan was a maker. Having a “different” life was not something Dan craved per se, but anyone looking in from the outside would agree that his life was anything but ordinary. He embraced the idea of going places, trying new things and bringing his family along. He visited more than 50 countries and was often asked by strangers if they could touch his thick curly hair. Lovingly, he always agreed as long as he could snap a selfie which sometimes appeared on his Instagram in the last few years. Dan taught those around him, including many of his cherished extended family, what it meant to push the status quo at work and at home. Wherever Dan was, he was learning. Not a huge talker, he preferred asking a lot of questions. With that, he did a lot of listening and then took action, creating memories often on his video camera and editing movies clips of everything from vacations to the daily grind. An entrepreneur at heart, Dan visioned someday building a car wash franchise business where he would combine his love for cars with a unique concept of “surgically” treating cars, every detail by a staff all uniformed in doctors’ lab coats. Dan was an innovator. A gaping hole remains in the hearts of all who knew Dan. To honor Dan’s life, donations can be made to The Dan Fulop ’92 Creator, Maker and Innovation Endowment Fund at Golda Och Academy as a way to contribute to the support and structure of young minds following a path to science, business, art and innovation. DONOR PROFILE Barbara Zinbarg z”l Born in Brooklyn, Barbara was the daughter of a life insurance salesman who climbed the stairs of tenement houses to collect modest weekly premiums. Her mother and grandmother ran a small tailoring shop. She learned from an early age that success in life requires hard work. In High School, Barbara worked two evenings a week at a local department store, and she had a part-time job while studying education at Brooklyn College. As fate would have it, that’s where she met another hard-working college student, Ed Zinbarg. Barbara was a rather shy young woman, but she knew what she wanted and what she wanted was Ed. Indeed, she asked Ed out on their first date - an action that her parents considered inappropriate for a nice Jewish girl. But her instinct proved to be right. Ed had only one date with another girl after that first date with Barbara, which began a 65-year romance. Neither she nor Ed were particularly involved in Jewish life as young adults. Though they maintained a kosher home, they were not shul-goers. Yet, by a strange set of circumstances, their daughters, Elizabeth and Allison, ended up in the local Solomon Schechter School. That marked a complete turning point in their lives. Jewish education, synagogue attendance, Jewish philanthropy, and all things Jewish became a predominant feature of their family and remained so ever after. In 1975, the family moved from New York to New Jersey. By then, their daughters did not need Barbara’s constant attention and she answered an ad for a teacher at the Solomon Schechter School of Essex and Union, now Golda Och Academy. She taught at GOA for 13 years, which were among the most fulfilling of her life. As a teacher in New York, she had given her young students in Harlem a zest for learning, which is what she did as a 2nd grade teacher at GOA. Barbara loved this school and was delighted to tell everyone that three of her five grandchildren are GOA alumni. She was a leader in the founding of the GOA Grandparents’ Society, which has played an important role in the school’s success. After her death this past May, Ed received countless letters from adults who were “Mrs. Z’s” students in 2nd grade. These letters spoke not only about her teaching skills but, remarkably, they said that Barbara’s “Fabulous Fridays” had instilled in them an unquenchable love of Shabbat. Barbara was not a Judaic Studies teacher, but she always had a surprise for the children on Friday that they looked forward to all week. In this way, Barbara Zinbarg transmitted to her young students the joys of being Jewish. That is one of the finest legacies of her life.

ALUMNI 2020-21 SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS

In August, we welcomed members of our GOA Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 for an outdoor Young College Alumni BBQ.

In March, the Class of 1990 got together for a Zoom reunion.

The Class of 1984 held a Zoom reunion in February, bringing former classmates together from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, North Carolina, Tennessee, Israel and Australia.

We were truly honored to have some of our GOA Heroes speak with our Upper and Lower School students in December, including our alumni in the medical field and local heroes here at school. We were fortunate to hear from Dr. Mindy Brittner ‘03, Mount Sinai Hospital; Dr. Emily Gutowski ‘11, Mount Sinai; Dr. Joseph Gutowski ‘09, Columbia University Medical Center; and Gila Akselrad ‘10, New York-Presbyterian, about their work on the frontlines as well as how their GOA education prepared them for a career in medicine.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS

THE DR LYNNE B HARRISON STEM CENTER EXPANSION Over the summer, Golda Och Academy was fortunate to have made significant enhancements to the Dr Lynne B Harrison Center, including a major expansion of the second floor lab, now called the Fab Lab, and the purchase of new fabrication equipment. This exciting project was made possible by generous grants from the Dr Lynne B Harrison STEM Endowment Fund and The Gottesman Fund’s Project Moonshot STEM program. “Four years ago, the freshman class consisted of 12 students, and this fall we have 24 students in the freshman cohort,” said Dr. Shira Kelmanovich, Director of STEM Education. “This exciting new space allows us to support the growing number of students participating in the STEM program and gives us the flexibility for the space and equipment to be available for other classes such as the new Middle School Digital Citizenship elective, Middle School and High School Arts electives and 6th grade advisory.” Since the STEM program’s start, 112 students have participated in the program. Over the last four years, the STEM curriculum has made significant enhancements. Using an integrated approach, students are developing projects that combine circuitry, programming, and computer-aided design (CAD) work. Paul-Michael Huseman, Science Department Chair, hopes the new space will encourage even more students to participate in STEM. “In creating a Fabrication Lab, we are making an intentional decision to inspire more students by grounding the curriculum in more sophisticated projects that have a clear purpose, require significant prototyping and optimization, and capitalize on the creativity and ingenuity of our students without limits.” The new second floor Fab Lab boasts an entire white board wall called “The Drawing Board” where students can sketch out their ideas, brainstorm and collaborate. On the opposite side of the room is a wall full of raw materials allowing students to work with everything from a variety of veneered wood panels to acrylic sheets in every color. The space also houses laser cutters, five 3D printers and a vinyl cutter along with Mac computers to give students access to a variety of design software from Fusion 360 to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The new equipment purchased includes two new 3D printers and a significantly larger and more powerful laser cutter.

On June 3, we were proud to honor our amazing faculty and staff for their dedication to our students and school, with a special tribute to outgoing Head of School Adam Shapiro. Hundreds of GOA families, grandparents and friends gathered virtually in celebration and support of our school with a video tribute to our GOA superheroes, in addition to wonderful entertainment that included, among other things, a brandnew Golden Ochtaves video and a live performance from magician and mentalist Jason Silberman.
