FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear GOA Community,

As we welcome the Jewish year of 5783, we at GOA also celebrate thrilling beginnings in school. The Talmud discusses the special joy of welcoming “new faces” (תושדח םינפ), and we have many new students and staff joining us at GOA this year. We are delighted by this infusion of talent and positive energy. Quite a few new students come from families with long associations at the school, while others are new to our community and even to town. Blessed are those who arrive, and blessed are those who return!

Positive signs abound as we enter the new year. Literally – we have a new street sign for the Eric F. Ross Upper School Campus, and there are en hancements across both locations, such as the next generation of smart boards in early childhood classrooms and new collaboration spaces for stu dents and faculty in the Upper School. The arts have been greatly enhanced this year with two new art and music teachers at the Lower School and three at the Upper School. I can’t wait to hear the music, see the paintings and experience the theater at GOA in 5783.

Throughout this report you will find examples of how GOA has addressed our 2019-24 strategic priorities to strengthen our school and help our students flourish. I am reminded of many highlights from the past year when our students mastered skills, explored ideas and places, and exercised leadership skills. We celebrate these developments and seek new ways to encourage our students to challenge themselves.

This past summer the world watched in awe as NASA’s new Webb Tele scope went online and brought us stunning images of the origins of the universe. Likewise at GOA, we have purchased a new telescope and ob servatory – perhaps not on the level of Webb, but our students will soon explore the night sky and expand their awareness of the expanse of heaven. Many times the Torah instructs us to raise our gaze – as Isaiah says, “raise your eyes to heaven and consider, Who created these?” We at GOA intend to continue to invite students to raise their gaze – to gain new perspective, set lofty goals and gain the skills and confidence to achieve them.

Thank you for choosing GOA for your children – they are our stars, and we look forward to watching them shine brilliantly in the years to come.

FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dear Golda Och Academy Community,

Golda Och Academy is much more than a school; it is a vibrant community held together by shared Jewish values. We welcome all Jews irrespective of their affiliation or level of observance, and we are an egalitarian community where boys and girls are taught the same curriculum.

We are blessed with a dedicated faculty and administration led by our talented Head of School, Rabbi Danny Nevins. The support and involvement of our parents, grandparents, alumni, donors and students are essential to sustaining such a nurturing community.

The last three years have been particularly challenging for all of us, especially our teachers who have risked their own health to teach our children in person. Yet throughout these difficult times, we have continued to offer an exceptional general and Jewish studies education. Zion ism is a critical element of our identity, and from Pre-K to 12th grade, Ahavat Yisrael (love of Israel) is part of everything we do. We have recently expanded our Israel education staff and look forward to our two significant trips to Israel this year: Na’ale for our 9th grade and Nesha ma for our seniors.

As a result of our generous donors, we have been able to attract and retain talented faculty. We have also had the capacity to hire more guidance and learning support staff to better serve diverse learners and support our students’ wellness in these challenging times.

At our core, we are committed to building the future of Jewish leadership. We are proud of our GOA alumni, many of whom are educators, attorneys, Jewish camp directors, successful entrepreneurs, journalists, clergy, social workers and physicians. Hillel International has even described us as a “pipeline for Jewish leadership.”

Because of your efforts, our school is a special place and a sacred kehillah

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our Board of Trustees. We are fortunate to have such skilled and devoted board members, and we welcome all members of our commu nity to find ways to contribute their knowledge and skill to strengthen our beloved school. We all owe special gratitude to my predecessor as board chair, Keith Biebelberg, who led us through the last two turbulent years with patience and wisdom.

May we go from strength to strength.

On behalf of our entire Board of Trustees, L’Shana Tovah. May your family be inscribed and sealed for a year of good health and many blessings!

From The Board Chair

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT

Dear GOA Community,

There is a special feeling of sweetness and joy in the air at the beginning of this 202223 school year. It started when we welcomed back alumni in August for our annual College BBQ event at the Eric F. Ross Campus, continued during Faculty week as we met new colleagues and culminated with back to school when we greeted so many beautiful new students and families. It is a truly inspiring and sacred moment when we all come together for a new year of learning, growth and opportunities in this special place that is GOA.

As I reflect back on the last two years, our entire school team has been engaged in un precedented and unusual public health and operational work to keep our community safe and learning. Because of this challenging environment, I am especially proud that our Administration and Board of Trustees have continued to take great steps forward in advancing our Strategic Plan (2019-2024). We are grateful for the leadership and investments of transformational partners like Dan and Jane Och, the Wilf Family and Paula Gottesman and others who have made this progress possible. Special thank you to our incredible Development Team volunteer leaders who have worked tirelessly to partner with our staff on fundraising. As a result of the commitment of our donors and leaders, we are already starting to see a tremendous impact in areas such as faculty excellence, faculty innovation and student services.

In the pages that follow, you will see an update on this progress. Please feel free to reach out to me to learn more. There is more work yet to be done together.

We would like to express a special thank you to all our donors, leaders and partners who have supported Golda Och Academy this past year. Wishing our entire GOA family a L’shana Tova U’Metukah - the sweetest of new years in 5783.

4 From The Board Chair

Last year marked the exciting completion of a three year, competitive $500,000 STEM grant that our school was awarded from The Gottesman Fund in NYC. Through the grant, Golda Och Academy was able to invest in interdepartmental and intercampus faculty collaboration opportunities and create the “Go For It” Fund, which promoted faculty innovation. Over 36 grants were given out to faculty for this program over the three year period which was administered by Dr. Shira Kel manovich, Director of STEM Education and Mr. Paul-Michael Huseman, Science Department Chair. Grants covered diverse school areas from launching a new musical at the Lower School to purchasing large STEM blocks for the Pre-K to enabling high school students to participate in the Envision Shakespeare Competition. Another major accomplishment was the conversion of a classroom into the “Fab Lab”— an incredible new maker space in the Dr Lynne B Harrison STEM Center. We are grateful for the Fab Lab equipment which was made possible by a grant from the Dr Lynne B Harrison STEM Endow ment Fund. For the year ahead, we are excited to be working on a new astronomy observatory project for 2022-23 whose equipment will be funded by this endowment fund.

The 2021-22 school year was truly a transformational year for investing in faculty excellence. A generous gift by the Jane and Daniel Och Family Foundation the prior year made it possible to create the Dr. Michael Och Fund for Faculty Excellence. Together with a generous gift by the Wilf Family Foundation, we were able to launch a new exciting faculty compensation model that was instituted in April 2022. This new model rewards excellence, collaboration, growth and professional development. For the 2022-23 school year, we were excited to recruit 22 new talented faculty and staff members across our Upper and Lower School campuses.

One of our key school priorities is increasing social, emotional and academic support for our students. This past year, GOA expanded the Learning Support Team and this fall, Mr. Spencer Leeds joined Golda Och Academy as our Learning Support Coordinator for both campuses. In an effort to address student mental health, Golda Och Academy received a $187,000 grant from The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey. This grant has enabled our school to expand its guidance staff for Pre-K to 12th grade, build teachers’ awareness of using a trauma sensitive approach to view student behavior, increase parent education and offer more mental health-related programming for students. For the 2022-23 school year, we welcomed two new guidance counselors to the team — Ms. Tara Goldstein, Upper School and Ms. Deborah Haas, Lower School. A new committee chaired by school trustee Liz Bier and Lori Jaffe, Director of Student Services, was formed last year and is addressing ways to continue to enhance student support at our school.

and GRANDFRIENDS KABBALAT

In April, it was so wonderful to bring so many of our GOA Grandparents and Grandfriends together for a meaningful virtual Kabbalat Shabbat celebration, with over 150 families joining for the festivities, featuring a beautiful student-led d’var torah, “Lecha Dodi” from our Golden Ochtaves choir, and special videos, including Lower School students interviewing their grandparents.

Our school is grateful for the tremendous support of our Grandparents that helps make everything we do at GOA possible.

Welcoming our families back into the building to celebrate milestone events was truly remarkable. On our Lower School campus, we held the Pre-K and Gan Hanukkah and End of Year celebrations as well as the Siddur, Chumash and Rosh Chodesh celebrations. Our 4th graders held the Torah Text Fair and the 5th Grade had their Moving Up Ceremony. It was wonderful to watch our students shine!

At our Upper School, we were thrilled to celebrate our B’nai Mitzvah students with their families, gathering as a community during tefillah. Our B’nai Mitzvah students read Torah or were called up for an aliyah and were offered a special misheber ach blessing from their synagogue clergy. Our high schoolers had deep experiential Jewish encounters through Shabba tonim and Israel trips for our 9th, 10th and 12th graders.

Last fall, we welcomed our new Admissions team led by Sari Allen, Director of Admissions and Enrollment Management; along with Jessica Wise, Assistant Director of Admissions, Lower School; and Maggie Schlageter, Upper School Admissions and Project Coordinator. The team has hosted several Open House programs and given over 100 individual tours on both campuses to prospective families this year. In May, the Spring Fling event was a hit for our incoming Pre-K, Gan and alumni families! Our teachers led a variety of fun activities at our Wilf Lower School Campus, including arts and crafts, garden ing, science, and a PJ Library book reading. Through these efforts GOA is thrilled to be welcoming nearly 70 new students and their families into the community for the 2022-23 school year.

In collaboration with the Parents’ Association, the team worked to create social opportunities for GOA families to connect outside of school. The spring Middle School parent night out, coffee and nosh for parents following Lower School mile stone events and the last day of school Picnic in the Park were enthusiastically received by GOA families of all ages. With alumni families and former students accounting for 19 percent of our student body, our Admissions team has also strengthened its partnership with the Alumni Relations department to showcase our school to graduates moving back to the area with their young families.

To maintain a strong connection with families and introduce our community to some of our new administrators, we held special Meet and Greet coffees for parents in the beginning of the 2021-22 school year. It was incredible to welcome our families back into our building with students and faculty to celebrate our joy and pride during milestone events, such as our Pre-K and Gan End of Year Celebrations, 5th grade Moving Up, 8th grade Siyum and High School graduation. Our community clergy also joined us at the Lower School to present the first siddurim to our 1st graders and chumashim to our 2nd graders.

We also held many events throughout the year for our alumni, grandparents and alumni parents, including summer reunions and young professional events, virtual community Havdalah, and our virtual Grandparents Kabbalat Shabbat in April. As a school community, we are quite fortunate to have our incredible Parents’ Association that continues to bring our families together for such events as our annual new family breakfast at the start of the school year, Family Fun Day in the fall, Middle School gathering for parents in the spring and an end of year meet up in the park. They also bring a lot of joy to our students through their Rosh Chodesh and holiday treats on both campuses. Thank you!

Throughout the year, we have been fortunate to bring our community back together in person. We ended our school year with a spectacular spring benefit, GOA Strong, on June 16. More than 250 GOA parents, faculty, alumni, friends and commu nity members came together at Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills to honor school leaders Keith and Tracy Biebel berg as well Paula Gottesman, who received the Community Partner Award, and Anne Kroll, who received the Volunteer Service Award. The successful evening celebrated the school and raised over $200K to support academic excellence and financial aid. Thank you to our school donors, corporate sponsors and friends for your generous support and participa tion!

We take tremendous pride in our performing arts program and this year we held our first Lower School production of the Lion King Kids. On our Upper School campus, the musical performances from our High School students, Catch Me If You Can, and our Middle School students, Shrek Jr., showcased a variety of talents! In May, our Golden Ochtaves and Middle School Choirs had a beautiful concert at the JCC in West Orange. The arts continue to thrive at GOA!

This past summer, we were excited to make some capital improvements to the Eric F. Ross Upper School Campus to enhance the student experience for the 2022-23 school year. These include new student and faculty spaces, new outdoor spaces/seating, landscaping and signage, and a new Upper School Student Garden. At the Wilf Lower School Campus, we are working on a project to build a new greenhouse on the Northfield Avenue side of the building. Fundraising is under way on this project which will significantly enhance our gardening and outdoor education program. We have additional plans underway at the Eric F. Ross Upper School that we will share with the community in the year ahead.
