Don’t Miss Kizomba workshops with Tanya this Sat July 19, 2014 at the StuckOnSalsa Workshop series at TSR www.yemashun.com www.stuckonsalsa.com Tanya came into the world loving movement and music and has been dancing since the age of six. Regardless of where she’s traveled and lived, including America, Asia, Europe, and South America; she’s always been able to find her natural rhythm in various cultures’ music. At eighteen, she traveled to New York City to become a member of a professional hip-hop dance company. Tanya continued to dance hip-hop while pursuing her Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice and Psychology at Rutgers University. In 1996 Tanya discovered Salsa while at Rugters. After relocating to Baltimore in 2000, she began to take every Salsa class she could, including with Psyon Maurico, Shaka Brown and Manuel Martinez. She eventually apprenticed with Psyon Mauricio as an assistant teacher and choreographer and has been dancing with him ever since. Tanya went on to train under a number of acclaimed Mambo and Salsa instructors, including Frankie Martinez, Johnny Matos, Gordon Neil, Leon Rose and Julissa Cruz. In April of 2011 Tanya was exposed to Kizomba and Semba for the first time and immediately fell in love with the music and the dances. Motivated to learn as much as she could, Tanya went on to train in the United States with Ivo Vieria, and Oscar B.A. She then decided to take her training to the next level and has spent several months abroad training with Master Petchu and Vanessa Pura Ginga, along side with Ricardo Sousa and Paula Lt. of AfroLatin Connection in Portugal. She counts Traditional Rumba, Hip Hop, and the various Lain and African cultures as major influences/inspirations. In January 2005 Tanya codirected Mezzlocutis dance company with Psyon Mauricio, and a year later she founded the all-female dance company YemaShun. Tanya continues to teach Mambo, Salsa, Kizomba, Semba and Terriaxa and performs inter/nationally while directing YemaShun and co-directing Mezzlocutis.
