Ecological Footprint The Ecological Footprint tracks humanity’s demand on the biosphere by comparing human consumption with the Earth’s regenerative capacity, or biocapacity (Figure 1.1). Every human activity uses biologically productive land (including fishing grounds). The Ecological Footprint is the sum of these areas, adjusted for their productivity, regardless of where they are located in the planet.
