Hi Everyone

T

he countdown is now officially on for the Federal Election – so between now and September 7 no doubt there will be plenty of discussion locally about who is the best candidate for the job. However before we get to that – I just wanted to remind anyone that has a young person in their household that may not have got around to enrolling to vote; they will need to get organised if they want to have their say. They have until 8.00pm on Monday, August 12 to enrol, and they can do this by going to www.aec.gov.au/enrol As we go to print we have been in contact with the seven candidates that have already nominated. We plan to provide you with a profile on each of the candidates in the August 14 edition.

Over the next few weeks, we will also be giving each candidate the opportunity to talk about what they see as important issues in our community and what they will be doing to change them. If you have a specific question you would like to put to the candidates why not email it through to us at editorial@gcnews.com.au Also for people interested in attending a ‘meet the candidate night’, the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce are holding one at the Landsborough Sports and Recreation Centre on Tunnel Ridge Road, on Wednesday, August 21 from 6.30pm. Regards,

Last week, as part of Small Business Week, local State Member Andrew Powell organised a morning tea for small businesses in Glasshouse Country. A small but eager crowd of 12 small business owners gathered in the Glasshouse Mountains Tavern, exchanging ideas and points of view with Andrew and each other. Andrew Powell explained that Queensland Small Business Week was designed to celebrate the contribution small business makes to our state. “The morning tea provided an opportunity to recognise the efforts of small business owners, and the many employees working to help them succeed. “Each person in the group was given the chance to share their personal circumstances and stories from their experience in business. It is through this kind of information sharing that the government, and more specifically me as their local member, can better understand some of the main issues affecting our business community,” he said. Issues covered included the steps State Government have taken in regard to the reduction in ‘green’ and ‘red’ tape for small businesses; problems that tourism accommodation providers experience with onerous on-site sewerage permits and licensing; and improvements that need to be made in the signage along main roads for local towns and attractions. “We have certainly got a hardworking and committed business sector in the Glass House

Small business people with big vision meet with Andrew Powell region and I am pleased to work alongside them wherever I can to ensure their future is prosperous and rewarding. “I am always keen to hear from our local business community on how they are travelling and encourage anyone needing assistance to email me at the office,” Andrew said. Chamber of Commerce President, Bob McLean said the small business owners attending were able to highlight real red tape issues that were restricting growth of their small businesses. The accommodation industry operators actually related to problems with duplication of regulation controlled by Andrew’s department. This was a perfect chance to address the restrictions of red and green tape with the minister and driven by the local chamber.

How much can one couple cope with?

Beerwah resident Sonja White and her partner Andy have had what can only be described as a bad 12 months, with Andy suffering a stroke at the end of last year and this year Sonja being diagnosed with cancer. So when Sonja recently returned home around 5.00pm home to find that her home had been burgled – she just couldn’t believe that they had to deal with yet another blow. The burglary was committed sometime during the day, and even though the house was locked, the burglar managed to rip the sliding security door off its tracks and get inside the house. Sonja said the burglar obviously just grabbed a pillow case off the bed and went about filling it with small pieces of jewellery,(including the wedding bands for her wedding later this year), collectibles and cash. While not all of the items were valuable, some of them were priceless to Sonja as they are irreplaceable because of the sentimental value. She also had her spare remote lock car key stolen, so she made sure it was replaced straight away so the burglar didn’t come back and steal her car. Sonja said she almost fell over when she found out that it was going to cost her $1400.00 to replace. Sonja was keen to share this story with other locals to get them to think about how they stored their valuable items in their house. Leaving items in a jewellery box may be convenient, however it also makes them an easy target if you are broken into. This experience has definitely made Sonja think far more seriously about having a safe in her home.

Road to ruin in Glass House ‘What’s happened to the bitumen on Old Gympie Road?’ Glass House Mountains residents have been asking. The pavement surface on the southern section of Old Gympie Road between Glass House and Beerburrum has deteriorated to such an extent that some locals believe it to be a serious hazard for road users. Many have questioned whether the closure of the Tibrogargan Creek bridge on Steve Irwin Way, Beerburrum (at the Matthew Flinders Rest area) to trucks with over the limit weight permits has meant that many more trucks are now using Old Gympie Road to travel south. According to Andrew Powell, State Member for Glass House, he’s had a lot of enquiries as to why the bridge load limit restrictions have changed. “I’ve have received enquiries from a number of constituents regarding the mass limits on this bridge. I’ve written to Scott Emerson, Minister for Transport and Main Roads and I have asked that this matter be given urgent attention. “I appreciate the community’s frustration and will do whatever I can to get a response in a timely manner,” said Andrew. Suggestions have been made to GCNews by disgruntled locals that it will be ratepayers who foot the bill for fixing the road which is being damaged as a consequence of the Department of Main Roads decision, and that State Government should compensate Council. Sunshine Coast Council road engineers are definitely aware of the problem.

Current state of Old Gympie Road “Council is aware of the bridge situation and is monitoring any impacts upon Council roads and Old Gympie Road in particular,” said a Council spokesperson. “Following nine years of drought, the last three years of exceptionally wet weather have impacted many pavements across our road network. “Old Gympie Road is no exception and it is a road that has always presented maintenance challenges due to the nature of the natural subgrade material.” Council does acknowledge that there will be some extra impact due to the Main Roads decision. “Traffic counters have been placed to determine the extent of the changed traffic conditions, and once this information is obtained, Council will consider its options. “Meanwhile, Council maintenance staff will continue to maintain Old Gympie Road in a safe condition and record any extra pavement repair costs,” said the Council spokesperson.

Exciting news for Kaitlyn the tiger

Australia Zoo is thrilled to announce Kaitlyn the Sumatran tiger is again pregnant, expecting a litter of three cubs to be born at the Zoo next month. According to Australia Zoo’s head tiger Photo by Ben Beaden, supervisor, Giles Clark, Australia Zoo the anticipation of new cubs has been building since Ramalon, the cubs’ 18-year-old father, showed positive fertility results last year. “When the tigers began mating in early May, we were very excited to say the least!” said Giles. Kaitlyn is considered one of the most genetically valuable individuals in the world, as she was born to a wild mother and captive father. With less than 500 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, the pregnancy is a significant win for the future of the species. “Not only will these cubs ensure the survival of the species in captivity, but they will also provide genetic diversity among captive tiger populations. Kaitlyn’s wild bloodline is an important factor,” said Giles. The gestational period for a Sumatran tiger is approximately 110 days, and the crew is expecting the pitter-patter and pounce of tiny paws in late August. Kaitlyn’s first litter was sadly lost in the early stages of her pregnancy in April this year; as with any animal there is always an element of risk that things won’t work out as planned, but thankfully five-year-old Kaitlyn’s health was unaffected.

The inside story

By Lea Parkes

Some readers will recognise the name Brian Stallworthy as from time to time Brian likes to share ‘his views’ with the rest of GCNews readers. I have to say Brian has no trouble expressing how he feels about many issues. Some of his letters do get a bit of editing before they are published (mostly to ensure that GCNews doesn’t end up facing legal action). So when Brian told me he had published a book ‘Inside Story a Cops True Tales’ I thought mmm bet he doesn’t hold back Brian with his book 'Inside Story on what he thought about those who he a Cops True Tales' worked with and those that crossed his path. Brian who is a natural story teller – has 34 years experience working in the New South Wales police force and was originally going to write about a couple of murder cases he worked on. However now retired and living at Glass House Mountains he decided it would be easier to put together his own personal stories from memory, without having to travel back to Sydney and undertake research. Instead he has chosen to put together a book of short stories / anecdotes of some of the most ‘funny’ things that happened to him on the job from his days working in Kings Cross when he first completed his training and then throughout this career which had stints in stations across the state. While police officers of today and former police officers will certainly recognise many of the unusual experiences that the police engage in with members of the public – I am sure it will give plenty of other readers a good laugh. He has set up a website www.briansbook.com.au for people outside of the area to purchase them on line for a cost of $20.00 (including postage), for locals they are available for $15.00 from the Glass House Mountains News agency and the Beerburrum Post Office.

Gallery and Studio offer a peak at the creative process

The Solitude Art Gallery and Studio officially opened its doors at Glenview recently giving locals and art lovers an opportunity to meet the property’s new owner artist Darren Trebilco, his partner Danielle and to be amongst the first to view the gallery. Darren, a long-term Sunshine Coast resident, has been exhibiting his art in solo and joint exhibitions throughout South-East Queensland for several years. Most recently, he has displayed in multiple exhibitions at the art and design precinct in West End and has entered the prestigious Archibald Prize with a portrait of Byron Bay musician, Juzzie Smith, a piece that will be available for viewing in the gallery. Darren describes his artwork as his own original style that he calls ‘Nowism’; it asks the viewer to explore the depths of a moment in time. “Flavours of Brett Whitely, Jackson Pollock and the surrealist movement mingle with design concepts, using bold lines and bright colours that jump off the canvas and grab you,” Darren said. The gallery will showcase Darren’s works and allow visitors a sneak peak behind the scenes with an open studio offering a glimpse of the creative process. “Everyone in the area has been so supportive, locals have been hearing about the gallery and dropping in with kind words of encouragement and advice for our new premises. It’s really very heart warming,” he said. Solitude Art Gallery / Studio is located at 163 Gelnview Road, Glenview. For more information contact Darren or info@solitudeart.com.au or 0413 013 882 or check out the website www.solitudeart.com.au Darren’s plan is to be open Wednesday to Sunday 10.00am – 5.00pm, and his open sign will be out on display – so feel free to drop in. Minister visits local school for National Schools Tree Day

Accountants & Business Advisers

National Schools Tree Day attracts in excess of 2,500 students of all ages from across Australia. This year, Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, will be joining Peachester State School for their annual tree plant.

“National Tree Day, officially on Sunday, July 28, is held each year to provide all Australians the opportunity to do their bit for the environment and ensure we continue to foster a longstanding commitment to protecting and preserving our environment,” Mr Powell said. Schools throughout Australia were encouraged to support this initiative by hosting their own school tree planting event on Friday, July 26. “It gives me great pleasure to join with one of my local schools in this annual tree planting exercise. I know the students at Peachester State School are mad keen on protecting their environment and promoting sustainable living practices so it’s a thrill to be involved with them on this special day. “Over one million native trees, shrubs and grasses were planted at events across Australia in 2012 so it would be great to see if we can better that figure in 2013,” Mr Powell said. All Peachester State School Students planted a native tree in their Aboriginal Forest Walk, a one kilometre walk being established in the school grounds. Trees planted included Aboriginal food trees, koala food trees and fig trees for the

Caloundra Family History Research Inc

Contributed by Roz Kuss The July guest speaker at the general meeting was Sue Reid from the Queensland Family History Society. Sue is the immediate Past President of the Society, a very knowledgeable genealogist, and she showed members practical examples on how to go about ‘Breaking down Brick Walls’ in our research. Problems with ‘walls’ that once were impenetrable are now more likely to be solved, due to the vast resources available on the internet. Sue supplied many hints for success, as well as providing written notes on her presentation. The next general meeting will immediately follow the Annual General Meeting, which will commence at 1.30pm on Thursday, August 15 in the Guide Hut, Arthur Street, Caloundra, when a new Committee will be elected. Chris Blake about to head overseas

Chris, a master pastellist from Landsborough, first picked up a paintbrush more than 30 years ago. Since then he has developed into a self described ‘traditional artist with a contemporary twist’. He’s also a well respected teacher, and offers weekly classes in pastels, oils and drawing. Later in the month Chris is heading to the UK for an extended trip, where he will be doing some teaching work as well as establishing relationships with galleries to exhibit his work. So next weekend, he will be opening his home gallery / studio for a massive sale / farewell party with all of his artwork drastically reduced – some with as much as 40% off, which he is

describing as a once in a life time opportunity. If you would like to attend the party please phone him to RSVP (for catering purposes) on 5439 9558 as on Saturday, August 7 from 6.30pm a light supper will be served. If you can’t come along on the night, but would like to check out the sale – then you can always make an appointment to catch up with Chris before he heads off on August 24. The gallery / studio is located at 36 Graham Drive, Landsborough. The gallery will remain open while he is away and appointments can be made with John Rhogan on 5439 9558

Business Buzz with Carol Fitton Beerwah Barber owner Debra Hackett is very happy to welcome back Craig Hunter to the team. “Craig worked with us part-time five years ago,” Debra says, “and locals may be aware Sandy has just left on her exciting travel venture around Australia for which we wish her well, so it's great to have Craig back working with us. Pop in and say hello!” Debra has had the business for 14 years, Julie has worked there for 12 years, and Sandy has worked there for five years. Julie Bischoff, Craig Hunter and Debra Hackett Debbie and David Bell of The Garage Sale Centre on Beerwah Parade set up the new business just over four months ago and have been rapt that they have been able to turn Deb’s ‘garage sale’ hobby into a thriving business. Deb said the locals are loving being able to pop into the shop and check out their weekly specials and their range of lounge, bedroom and dining suites as well as white goods and bric-abrac. Deb can source speciality items, or particular furniture pieces for you (both new or preloved). Please contact them if you are moving, renovating or downsizing, and would like to discuss replacing your unwanted goods for cash. The Beerwah Lions are currently seeking support from local business with their 2014 Business Directory advertising. This is the club’s major fundraiser of the year and the funds raised go back into supporting our local community. The registration form for business advertising with rates is available for download from the ‘Files section’ of the Beerwah Lions Facebook page. The 2014 edition cover photo will be selected at the upcoming Beerwah Charity Sports photo competition. Monthly Finance Money Guide Super Fund returns are bouncing back with Ross Wolstencroft Super funds are on track to provide returns for the 2012/2013 year averaging around 15%! While most funds have not yet provided their annual reports to members, Rainmaker research has recently released its annual superannuation fund performance survey, with analysis showing an expected average of around 15% per annum for the latest financial year. This follows on from average returns of 0.5% in 2011/12, 8.6% in 2010/11, and 9.7% in 2009/10. In the past four years these returns translate into cumulative investment growth or 38% or 8.3% pa. Rainmaker noted that this strong return recovery had been driven in turn by strong returns from actively managed fixed interest, then a positive share market rally, followed by the more recent depreciation of the A$, which drove up overseas investment performance. Importantly, Rainmaker also pointed out that many fund members who had given up on super when returns were negative, or converted all growth assets to cash, had waited too long to get back into the more dynamic growth sections of the capital markets. Their analysis found that a hypothetical investor earning about $50,000, who had $50,000 in their super in June 2007, would now be $29,000 better off than a member who ceased contributing. This is a massive 53% better result in only six years!

While only hypothetical, Rainmaker said that it clearly illustrates the importance of focusing on super’s long term nature, especially considering the damage that being so far behind can do to a member’s potential retirement lifestyle. Rainmaker also found that members who maintained their contributions during the GFC took only two and a half years to recover, while a member who stopped contributing took six years, or almost three times longer. This research highlights the importance of always making well advised decisions. While it is quite appropriate for members to review their super fund, consider swapping to a better one, or to reconsider their investment strategy, it is folly to desert what is one of the most tax advantaged structures altogether. Please give us a call if you would like an assessment of your current super fund, or your contribution strategy, to see if you are on track for the retirement lifestyle that you want. The above information is not to be taken as personal advice as it does not take into account any individual’s objectives, financial situation or needs. Housing approvals could indicate a great time to invest in construction If you’re considering taking out a construction loan in order to build a new home, you may be happy to know that private housing approval rates rose 1.5 per cent during May - indicating that now could be a fantastic time to pursue these goals. There was a further one per cent increase in the number of dwellings approved over the month. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has found that the total number of private sector housing approvals www.gcnews.com.au

throughout the country has grown, with Australian Capital Territory seeing the largest increase of 4.1 per cent. These rises could signal a return of consumer confidence to the real estate market. Peter Jones, Master Builder Australia’s (MBA) chief economist, said in a statement released July 4 that this was a positive shift - with approval ratings increasing 9.9 per cent in the five months to May this year. “Low interest rates and the recent fall in the dollar should

boost confidence and lead to improved residential building condition[s],” Mr Jones said. This increase in approval rates coupled with the recent announcement by the Reserve Bank of Australia to keep the cash rate unchanged at 2.75 per cent could mean now is the perfect time to take the plunge and invest in a construction loan for property investment. If you’re looking for a great home loan to suit your personal circumstances, the best way is to get in contact with a mortgage

broker. The team at Smartline will be able to provide you advice and guidance in order to find the right home loan for your needs. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

School News Beerwah High’s new student leaders Contributed by Tanya Hayden Recently Beerwah SHS held it's student leader investiture to formally present badges to the new senior and junior school leaders for 2013-2014. After a rigorous selection process 39 students have been selected to lead the student body and to work closely with administration and staff to ensure that Beerwah SHS can be the best it can be. Special congratulations must go to our senior school captains Ashleigh Dwan and Ivo Murdoch and vice captains Jordan Dron and Devon Pringle. These students have already demonstrated that they have exemplary behaviour and effort and a desire to strive to achieve in whatever task they set their mind to. Our junior school captains Zoe Goldsborough and George Sneesby and vice captains Tahlia Harrop and Declan Millanta-Higgins are equally as

Junior school leaders - George Sneesby, Tahlia Harrop, Zoe Goldsborough and Declan MillantaHiggins

Senior school leaders - Devon Pringle, Jordan Dron, Ashleigh Dwan, and Ivo Murdoch committed to encouraging their fellow students to be actively participating in all aspects of school life. Beerwah SHS student council president, Cordelia Toovey and her dedicated team are already planning events to raise money for both the school and selected charitable organisations that will involve many students and staff in fun and worthwhile activities. I would like to take the opportunity to formally thank all of our outgoing student leaders from 2012-2013 for their dedication to the school and all of their hard work over the last 12 months. I look forward to working with our new school leaders and I am sure they will perform their roles and duties to the best of their abilities and be excellent role models for the school.

Landsborough State School recently held their inaugural whole school Garden Expo. The day was an excellent way to bring teachers, parents, children and the community together in the garden. Each class was allocated a budget and a garden bed to transform. The school was abuzz with activity as students worked together to design and makeover their allocated garden. Participants learnt about teamwork, responsibility, horticulture and sustainability. School Principal, Kristy Walton, said "children are the gardeners of the future. Teaching them the basics of looking after a garden in a sustainable way is possibly one of the best investments for the future of our environment." Thank you to everyone who donated plants, pots, soil, mulch and other items. Also, thank you to everyone who came along to lend a hand. The end results were amazing and a huge credit to everyone involved. The school has received so much positive feedback regarding the day. They are hoping to make the Garden Expo an annual event.

The children of Landsborough Child Care Centre were out and about in their community on Wednesday visiting their local IGA. The children saw behind the scenes, thanks to the friendly staff showing them around and making them feel so welcomed. They walked the isles, explored the fruit and vegies and even got to see in the big freezer! Brrrrrrr! Manager Errol even organised an awesome sample bag for the children filled with many goodies! Coffee and Tea Merchants on Steve Irwin Way have been open now for just over a year. In that time they have already got a reputation for their great coffee, gorgeous sweet treats (including plenty of gluten free choices), their tranquil back garden seating area and now they are making a name as a music venue. No, not a loud band, late night type of venue, but definitely a place to kick back on a Sunday afternoon, with a coffee (however you like it) in hand and maybe nibbling a small cake and relaxing to the sounds of the local Glasshouse Musos Club on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. On the other Sundays, Steve who runs the place, brings in other local musicians to take to the stage. If you haven’t already checked it out, then call in on Sunday from 1.00pm – 4.00pm. My tip is to get there early to make sure you can grab a seat!

In response to the recent letter

Our intentions were to have a storyboard dedicated to Herbert Stanley ‘Stan’ Tutt OAM made at the same time as one was made for William Landsborough earlier this year. However our funds would not stretch that far. Certainly if we had a donation of approximately $3,000.00, we would love to go ahead with the original plan and have the storyboard on display as a tribute to Mr Tutt. Several photos of Stan were included in the slideshow presentation which had been running on the foyer screen for the past two or three weeks. However, as a result of the letter in last weeks’ issue, we have decided to display his photo on the Reading Room wall. Landsborough Museum Committee

Can you help me in my studies?

I am a qualified Naturopath, Medical Herbalist, Remedial Massage Therapist and Iridologist running the Sage Centred Natural Therapies Clinic at Glass House Mountains. Currently I am doing some studies on Physinogamy. In brief, this about looking at what people look like and then using those signs as seen on the body, or in the face, as part of an overall health assessment. And I need some help so I am putting the word out into our community to find a range of volunteers – both sexes, all ages – that are willing to be photographed for my case studies. For example, the person may have a bright red nose and this could indicate heart problems, or they may have ridges on their finger nails, and this could indicate a need for silica as a supplement to their diet. Much of Chinese Medicine is based on this method of health assessment. While I have a nice fat text with over 1,100 pages, and a few other texts to refer to, I need real life cases and photos of people’s faces and bodies. If you would like to assist me with being a volunteer please phone me on 5438 7999 or email me at sage.centred@isage.net.au or sage. centred@gmail.com Charlotte Herring Glass House Mountains

Great local customer service still offered

Have you ever had the need to use the team at Beerwah Small Engines? We use them for servicing our mower and chainsaw but we also have a small machine (Kanga) and whenever we have had trouble with it you can guarantee that

Allan will have an answer! We have needed to drop this machine in at short notice before and the staff always try to accommodate us and get the problem fixed as quickly as possible. At no other business, large or small have we received such good service! The staff goes out of their way to help and the rates are always more than reasonable. Great customer service goes a long way and rarely is it acknowledged. Thank you again to the staff, in particular Allan, at Beerwah Small Engines! Darren Glass House Mountains

Just not good enough

I have just been watching the news stories about a community saying ‘No to McDonalds’ in Tacoma, Victoria. I can understand how they feel – with McDonalds being built at the Shell Service stations at Wild Horse Mountain. We already have two Hungry Jacks located there and there is Hungry Jacks litter all up and down Johnston Road, as well as at an Aboriginal sacred site (Bora-ring) on that road that has been defaced by fast food wrappers. What makes people think that it is reasonable to just chuck their rubbish out of the cars as they drive along? Who is responsible for cleaning up the litter of our beautiful town? Proud Coastal Village (Markets)

Beerwah is a lovely country town on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast region. Six million day trippers visit the Sunshine Coast each year and it would be safe to assume that most of them come from the greater Brisbane area, making Beerwah a possible gateway to the Sunshine Coast. Coastal Village Markets is a wonderful community market run by local Beerwah residents and volunteers welcoming all Coastal residents, visitors and their families to attend our monthly markets at Beerwah Sports Club. We do this to support Cancer Council QLD to help fund better treatments, hope for more survivors, and hope for a cancer free future. We are passionate about our community and want everyone who visits Coastal Village Markets to experience all Beerwah has to offer.

Conditions Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

The name of our market is not as important as the fact that it’s all in the name of the fight against cancer. Come and join us! Our next market date is Saturday, August 24 (not the usual last Sunday of the month) to coincide with the Beerwah Charity Sports Day. See you there.

Thanks

Coastal Village Markets Committee

I’d like to say Thank you to everyone who helped me to achieve my fundraising target of the Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer. The money raised through quilt raffles and the Over The Hill Quilters Quilt Show exceeded $2,500, so thank you to everyone who bought a raffle ticket, visited the show, helped out or loaned their quilts for display. And thank you to the local businesses who made donations of money, lucky door prizes or raffle prizes. I think it’s great to see communities come together, and also to see such support for such a painfully worthy cause affecting so many people. I’m ready for the ride and thankful for the opportunity to give something back to life. Special thanks go to Merle and Graham Gibson and Beris and Alan Todd for their generous donations. Please give your support to the local businesses who supported the quilt show: Animal House Pets and Aquarium, Auscare Pharmacy Glasshouse, Bank of Queensland, Beerwah Auto Centre, Beerwah Flowers & Gifts, Beerwah Health Foods, Beerwah Patchwork and Stuff, Beerwah Print and Stationery, Beerwah Small Engines, Cafe Beerwah, Campbells Upholstery, Club Glasshouse, Coochin Creek Quilts, Curves Beerwah, Custom Curtains and Shade, Glasshouse Mountains News Agency, Hinterland Accounting Services, Matilda Fruit Barn, Community Recycling Beerwah, Neddy’s Nosebag, Pasta D’Vine and T.C. Hair. Of course a massive ‘thank you’ to my mum Christine Forrester! I wouldn’t be much without my mum (let alone either parent) the backbone of my ethics and morality. Mum organised all of the fundraising on my behalf. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without her! It’s really just another example of how much my mum will do for me, and hopefully an example of how much a parent can do for their children. Because they are everything to us, from the beginning to the end. Zach Forrester Beerwah

Our free mulch

One must comment on recent articles regarding our so called free mulch, especially with our 90% increase on our green waste dumping to $15.00 a load. It’s a pity our local shire couldn’t follow our neighbouring shires with a few free dumping vouchers, plus a road side pickup. As the old saying goes there’s no such thing as a free lunch. The same applies to our mulch. Colin Batch, Beerwah

Counselling

Jen and Shannon at Hinterland Body and Soul recommend having regular peels as they will improve the freshness, texture and colour of the complexion. They also reduce the appearance of fine lines, improve acne, congestion and blocked pores. A peel also stimulates collagen renewal and assists with superficial scarring and irregular pigmentation as well as being beneficial for the neck, hands and décolletage. The GP40 Peel is a rejuvenating treatment that is recommended for anyone wishing to give their skin a brighter glow and a boost of hydration. It involves the application of a solution to the skin to remove part of the outer layer, stimulate growth of new skin and reduce skin congestion, resulting in improved skin refinement. Tobi, their Laser/IPL technician recommends having a peel two to three weeks after having skin rejuvenation as it will assist with the final results of her treatments. Now is the perfect time to have a regenerating and resurfacing treatment of the skin by encouraging the most damaged upper layers of the skin to flake off. At Hinterland Body and Soul they have their ASAP Fruit Acid Peel on special for only $48.00 during August. So why not make an appointment by dropping in to 5/5 Turner Street Beerwah or giving them a call on 5494 0546.

Local Music Scene Music Today

with Dr Micheal Whiticker

Micheal lives at Glass House Mountains and is a professional musician, composer and recording studio owner

Tips for singers

Last month I presented local musician Tommy Leonard to you. This month I would like to continue with some singing tips that came out of this discussion. We chatted about the importance of a singer recognising their individuality - every voice is different. When a singer listens to a song and likes it enough to want to sing it, the first thing they should do is to find the key that suits the range of their voice. Early in their career, vocalists often slavishly sing a song in the key of the original. This may be because they lack the skills needed to transpose the accompaniment to the song, and / or they don’t know their own voice well enough to confidently attempt different keys. They should try songs in a range of keys and with different interpretations in their search for how they might best perform them. Then they can begin to build a repertoire of songs that suit them and what they want to say as an artist. I recommend singers develop their repertoire through a simple cataloging system: Folder or Songbook 1 – songs being tried out; Folder 2 – songs they want to put in their repertoire but that they are developing; Folder 3 – songs that suit their voice, represent them as an artist and work for them in performance. Regular live performance is an essential part of a vocalist’s growth as an artist, and ‘open mic’ or ‘blackboard’ sessions are a great way to facilitate this. I recommend always carrying two sets of accompaniment to songs. The first can be the sheet music or chord accompaniment and the second can be backing tracks. Backing tracks are an anathema to some musicians as they reduce the need for live players and tend to encourage more clinical, less immediate performances. I encourage their use - they give confidence to the artist, can present more intricate arrangements and can of course involve live musicians e.g. live guitar and voice with bass and drums on the backing. Do have a creative musical month!

Michael teaches music students from his home studio and runs the Glasshouse Muso’s Club. If you would like to find out more contact him on M: 0419 026 895 or E: mwhitick@bigpond.net.au

Glasshouse Musos

Contributed by Michael Whiticker We gathered at our regular Sunday haunt at the Glasshouse Coffee and Tea Merchants to enjoy the day’s fare, and we weren’t let down. Some irregular regulars in Warren Freeman and Lawrie White joined us from our southern shores to entertain. Warren recognised the passing of Australian folk singer songwriter Gary Shearston with a song he didn’t write but one for which he is well known – Cole Porter’s ‘I get a kick out of you’. We squeezed a second set out of Warren at the end of the day and I encouraged him to invite some guests up to fill out what is already a very reliable sound. He was joined by the solid bass playing of Doug Pullen with Paul Fagan handy as ever on guitar and with a range of backing singer supporters, sung the old folk favourite revived by the Carter family – ‘Will the circle be unbroken’. Earlier in the day Sandy Edwards shared her delicious, velvety vocals with us in versions of ‘Summer Breeze’ and ‘Here comes the rain again’ – which luckily for us didn’t come to pass, saving us from the showers predicted! A solid backing for Sandy would give her the opportunity to concentrate on her great voice, so I hope she brings some charts along to a future session and gives it a go. Mary Martin is a fine songwriter with a range of awards and achievements to her credit. She gave us a set of originals and I particularly enjoyed her ‘My love is back again’. Frank Moroney’s set included the Johnny Greenwood number ‘Tibrogargan’ - celebrating the monster ‘gorilla’ rock which overlooks our venue, and always a favourite with local listeners. Other artists on the program included the very entertaining Glenn Stephens and Mick Dawson, and I celebrated the life of the recently deceased JJ Cale with a short set of his songs. I have always felt a special affinity with JJ’s music. Hopefully ‘Call me the breeze’, with Doug on bass and Paul on guitar, blew up a storm and sent him out with a big thank you from us down here at Glasshouse! www.gcnews.com.au

Sore neck and shoulders? Things 2 Do A very glitzy fundraiser

The Peachester State School has put together a spectacular fundraiser for this year with a High Tea and Jewellery Auction to be held on Sunday, August 18 at Peachester Hall from 12.30pm. If you have a favourite tea cup take it along on the day for the competition for the quirkiest tea cup and most popular tea cup. One of the highlights of the event will be their amazing raffle with prizes of jewellery which total $6,200.00. Raffle tickets are $2.00 and tickets for the high tea will be $10.00 each, both are currently available Peachester Fruit Market. The raffle will be drawn during the Jewellery Auction at the High Tea.

Artists Inspired by Travels

Six artists have joined together for a special exhibition entitled ‘Windows on the World’ to show that travel not only broadens the mind it also stimulates the artistic senses. All have drawn from their travel experiences around Australia and Europe. This free exhibition will be held at St Mary’s Hall on the green in Montville on August 10 and 11 from 9.30am to 4.00pm each day. The artists are all members of the Blackall Range Visual Artists who meet each week at Mapleton to paint and share their knowledge, and the exhibition will include a wide variety of paintings with commission from the sales supporting the upkeep of the Historic St Mary’s Hall.

Are your sore neck and shoulders making life less enjoyable? Does sitting at the computer, driving, or even reading a book cause a burning discomfort in your shoulders that spreads up into the base of your skull? If so, you may be suffering from Spinal Subluxation and poor posture – 2 common problems that chiropractic care is very effective in relieving. Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe ‘dysfunctional’ vertebrae in the spine. This occurs when the spine loses normal motion and/or position, and can cause wear and tear on the discs, ligaments, muscles and other spinal tissues. Subluxation can also have an affect on the nerves exiting the spine – leading to even more issues of pain and poor health. Today’s lifestyle encourages us to fall into ‘forward head posture’ - where our head sits in front of our shoulders – rather than in line with the shoulders as it should. This forward posture has a significant impact on your health and your appearance and if left unaddressed, tends to get worse as you get older. Researchers agree that for every 2.5cm of forward head posture there is an equivalent increase of 4.5kg of stress on the neck. It’s no wonder poor posture is such a pain! Poor posture and Spinal Subluxation often result in back aches, neck pain, jaw pain, loss of lung capacity, gastrointestinal problems, pre-disposition to arm, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries and the list goes on. Fortunately, we can help! Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your discomfort. For many years I have thought that Jesus was executed on a nice piece of milled timber. The kind you see in all the pictures and the necklaces. Archaeology however, suggests differently. The evidence suggests that when someone was crucified they were taken out to the nearest olive tree. A cross bar was slung across the branches and the victim was crucified with his legs, either splayed on either side of the tree or his knees bent to one side. Knowing this helps make a lot more sense of the Bible verse: ‘Cursed is he who hangs on a tree.’ In the Old Testament one of the ways you knew that a person was cursed by God or that God was not impressed with a person is when they hung dead on a tree. For example, Absolom, King David’s son had his hair tangled in a tree where he died hanging on a tree. You are meant to join the Bible’s dots and draw your own conclusion. So it is that Jesus as he was crucified literally hung on a tree. As the religious leaders were talking about killing Jesus, the chief priest says that we are not allowed by law to kill this man. That was a blatant lie. It was thoroughly untrue. The priests had the power to kill people for blasphemy. For example, people tried to kill Jesus a number of times and the only thing that stopped them was not the law but divine intervention. There is the famous incident of the woman caught

in adultery on her way to be stoned and killed, when Jesus intervenes. Later on Saul (who eventually became the apostle Paul) was on his way to kill Christians - and he was given permission to do this by the chief priest. The chief priest could order the execution of Jesus. The trouble was this execution was by being bombarded with stones. And the High Priest didn’t want that for Jesus – he wanted something worse. He wanted Jesus to hang on a tree so that not only would Jesus die, but Jesus would be cursed. And only the Romans had that right to kill people on a tree - that’s why the priests wanted to hand Jesus over to the Romans. Because Jesus was killed on a cross made of a tree and a crossbar Jesus really did become cursed by God. But here is the great thing; the Bible says that Jesus became cursed so that we might become God’s friends and find the forgiveness for the evil that resides in all of our lives. Even though it was a terrible thing for Jesus because he loves us, he allowed himself to be cursed by God by dying on a tree.

Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987 Focus on Beerburrum

Dee (from Beerburrum Buzz) and I will be facilitating a community meeting to discuss a revitalisation plan for Beerburrum. The recent economic downturn has impacted Beerburrum and this meeting is a good opportunity for community members to focus on what locals like and value about living there and what might need to change in order to enhance the town. The meeting starts at 6.30pm on Thursday, August 8 at Beerburrum School of the Arts Association on Anzac Avenue. A light supper with tea and coffee will be available, so come along for a social evening to talk about the future outlook for Beerburrum. If you can’t make the meeting, send your ideas and input to Dee Pincott-Miller via the Post Office or email beerburrumbuzz@hotmail.com

Beerwah Aquatic Centre

Pool maintenance has started at the Beerwah Aquatic Centre and that means the facility is now closed. The 25m pool is being upgraded to tiles as part of Council’s commitment to providing quality community recreation venues. The aquatic centre will reopen for Learn to Swim programs from September 2 with the 25m pool due to reopen on October 8, weather permitting.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Martin Rungert Park

Now that I’ve met with Council’s Arborist at the park to have a look at the tree situation, I now understand that the real issue is the health of the three figs that are growing closely together and robbing one another of growth potential. The trees are literally fighting for sunlight and are growing almost straight up as they do so. The tree experts pointed out that the main consideration is actually the health of the trees. And if one tree is removed it will give the two remaining trees a better chance of a long healthy life. If two trees are allowed to flourish then the shade cover they provide will inevitably expand and provide good cover for park users. I’m certainly still happy to take on board further community views about the removal of one tree but it does seem like the most practical option, not only for the trees but also for the benefit of locals visiting the park.

Landsborough

Work has started at Bradenburg Road as part of Council’s overall road and stormwater drainage network improvement program. Work will involve reconstruction of a section of the road with a changed vertical and horizontal alignment, construction of longitudinal open channels, construction of cross road drainage and slope stabilisation. There may be some short term half-road closures while stormwater lines are laid across the road, however, one lane will be open at all times. If the weather is kind, the work will be completed in five weeks.

Effective tendering

Free information sessions about effective tendering are on at library locations across the region during August and September. It’s an opportunity to gain practical tips on small business tendering and how to present your business to government and private sectors when tendering for work. Make sure you register to attend at the library. The next Mooloolah breakfast meeting is on Thursday, September 5 at 7.30am at Thunderbird Café. www.gcnews.com.au

Get up&Grow with Jade King

Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist and teacher who is passionate about vegetable gardening Fresh asparagus is just divine and so exciting to grow. The surprise as new shoots erupt from the soil, the rapid growth of each spear seemingly only taking a day to reach a foot and the graceful feather like fronds sauntering with the breeze. Absolute beauty in both taste and appearance. My asparagus was doing wonderfully well until we moved out to the farm. Its relocation was not highly prioritised with limited time and all of the other chaos, so we simply dug a hole in an available spot and threw in the crowns for temporary growth until we got time to plant it properly … 10 months later we have found time! Asparagus is an herbaceous perennial that bears for up to 20 years, so it is well worth considering locating it somewhere that will not be in the way of future plans. Usually asparagus are commercially grown in cold and frosty areas, however for home purposes they produce more consistently, yet at a reduced size in subtropical and tropical areas. Asparagus can be grown from seed or crowns. If grown from seed it will take three to four years to produce spears that you can harvest. Crowns on the other hand, which are simply sections divided from mature plants, will have you harvesting spears in one to two years. After choosing a good permanent site, we dug an extra large hole and added manure, dynamic lifter and compost, which we then mixed throughout the soil to really enrich the entire growing area. Prior to planting the crown, I did a quick test to check my pH and used some lime to adjust it to between pH 6-7. After a bit of time to let the soil and amendments settle, we planted the crowns into a pocket of compost at about 15-20cm depth just to make sure they didn’t get burnt by all the manure. Also, be careful not to plant your crowns too deep or it will reduce the number of spears you get, whilst too shallow will result in a multitude of very thin spears. Finally, we applied a thin layer of lucerne mulch all over the exposed soil and watered well. I will continue to keep up with regular watering because asparagus enjoy plenty of moisture. Furthermore, I’ll be planning some feedings of manure prior to harvest and dormancy to ensure good strong crown development. I am now eagerly anticipating the spears to emerge when spring comes. I will leave these to go to fronds this year to build up my crowns, and then maybe I’ll be harvesting some of my succulent fresh asparagus the following year. Why not have a go at growing some Asparagus? They are truly both beautiful to look at and to eat! Until next time in Get Up and Grow!

Peachester District Horticulture Society Inc.

Contributed by Patricia Bradford Members and visitors from other garden clubs enjoyed a great day of friendship at our Friendship Day in July. Guest speaker Noela Frizzo spoke about the huge variety of the native orchids of Australia, ably assisted by Jan Gresham for showing the projected images of many of these beautiful orchids. Then, Miriam Garnham from the Aspley Garden Club, who is the ambassador for the Qld Council of Garden Clubs, gave a short talk, mainly about the great benefits of gardening for both mental and physical health. Richard Speechly, Vice President of the QCGC also had a few words to say, followed by John McGrath, spokesman for Garden Clubs of Australia. Lots of raffle prizes were drawn throughout the morning with plenty of happy winners. A lovely lunch of homemade soups and sandwiches finished off a wonderful morning with our visitors. Visitors are welcome to join us for our next meeting on Thursday, August 15 from 9.30am at the Peachester Hall. For more information phone 5496 9169 Patricia Bradford (Publicity Officer).

Plant of the month

Hibiscus heterophyllus

Native hibiscus or Native rosella Native hibiscus is a relatively common shrub found in wet or dry forests. It is usually regarded as a shrub, but in some situations it can reach six or seven metres. The stems can be slightly prickly and leaves vary in shape from single oval shape to three lobed. When grown in full sun in the home garden, hibiscus can be pruned to an attractive rounded shape. However, in the wild and under larger trees it becomes a less compact and rather straggly plant. The flowers are large and attractive, usually white or pale pink with a red / purple throat. Buds are often deep pink. Flowers are short lived but flowering continues from spring to summer. The fruit and seed capsules are prickly and often targeted by insects, making it difficult to obtain viable seed. The GMAN plant nursery has some Native hibiscus tube stock for sale.

Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Open Mon - Fri

Water Tanks

Five-year-old local resident, Luka Codlin, recently travelled to Auckland, New Zealand to compete in the 2013 World BMX titles. It was a massive achievement for young Luka to be able to represent his country wearing the green and gold jersey. Landsborough State School held at free dress day in support of their Prep student, Luka. For a gold coin donation, students were allowed to come dressed as their favourite sporting champion. All money raised from the day was donated to Luka's family to help fund the trip to the World Titles. On the morning of Thursday, July 24, Jay (Luka’s dad), got him up and ready to compete at the indoor Vector Arena. He was dropped into the rider’s area and could not see his dad until completion of the titles. Sitting in the crowd, Jay had sweaty palms and his heart was racing as the competition started. Luka was on the gate with his first moto about to start - the moment Luka had been waiting for had finally arrived. There were over 5,000 riders competing from all over the world with 46 riders in Luka’s category five - six year old boys. Luka had to get enough points to place in the top four after three moto’s to reach the quarter finals. After placing sixth, third, and sixth in his three moto’s, Luka qualified for the quarter finals. The next step was to place in the top four to carry on to semi finals. Luka placed fifth in his quarter final and just missed out on climbing the ladder to semi finals. After months of training and preparing himself for the World Titles, Luka has placed in the top 24 for his age group in the world. Well done Luka! At only five years of age, you have a big future ahead of you.

Hinterland Boxing Club

Contributed by Steve Pitt On Saturday August 2, HBC sent a team of three boxers to the Shamrock Boxing Tournament at the Sands Tavern, Maroochydore. Jake Molloy was edged out by Benny Cameron-Hands from the Impact Boxing Academy on a split points decision in a close fight. After again being unable to be matched for a bout, Taylen Pitt looked strong in an exhibition bout against an opponent twice his age, weight and experience. Leroy MacNamara went down to a clever opponent from the Albert Boxing Club in an at times what was a scrappy fight. HBC will now regroup and head to Beaudesert next Saturday night.

Having a chin wag with God

An American decided to write a book about famous churches around the world. On his first day he was inside a church in Orlando when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read ‘$10,000 per call’. The American, being intrigued, asked a priest what it was used for. The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 you could talk to God. The American thanked the priest and went along his way. Next stop was in Atlanta. There, he saw the same looking golden telephone with the same sign under it. Again he asked a nearby nun what its purpose was. She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 he could talk to God. He then travelled all across America, Europe, England,

Japan, and New Zealand. In every church he saw the same thing. The American decided to travel to Australia to see if Australians had the same phone. The first church he entered, there was the same looking golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read, '40 cents per call.' The American was surprised so he asked the priest about the sign. “Father, I've travelled all over the world and I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I'm told that it is a direct line to Heaven, but in all of them the price was $10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?” The priest smiled and answered, “you’re in Australia now, son. This is ‘Heaven’, so it's a local call.” T. Harold, Beerwah Week beginning 07/08/13

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This New Moon week in the sign of Leo places an educational and travel opportunity in your path. So why not focus on expanding your horizons and opening up your vistas on a new intellectual plane? There is a potential for growth in financial matters but dangerous risk too. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This can be one of your best weeks to create dynamic alliances. Team up with innovative youth, rather than old traditional partners. The planets indicate that you are not to let an obsessive idea to succeed make you overbearing or dominating. You may need some fancy footwork. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 With this Jupiter / Pluto opposition and the New Moon in Leo, you might go to extremes into a war over beliefs, opinions, and doctrines. Under the current stars this is not the time to be a rigid thinker. Just stay calm to make your point, as authorities are struggling with funds. PISCES February 20 – March 20 You will, as other signs will, have the challenge of personal or social freedoms vs. family love and responsibility. This is the New Moon in Leo and Mercury muscling in with Mars and wobbling with slippery Neptune. The answer is don’t push something forward if uncertain.

ARIES March 21 – April 20 This month starts you with resistance to authorities. Therefore it is best to keep cool rather than triggering your emotions. There is a possibility of something happening around your home, which is security driven, or a professional crisis. It’s just to reinvigorate your life plan. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This week sees the New Moon in Leo which may turn one or two of your ideas into an obsessive search for facts. The planet Mercury enters Leo so you can share your thoughts with family members, mixed in with the usual drama. Probably best to burrow into a safe retreat place. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This New Moon week promises you a fresh influx of new ideas and social gatherings in the month ahead. However, you must be open to them. A wacky free-spirited person could be an introduction to a new group. Gigantic Jupiter opposes Pluto so someone is not reliable now. CANCER June 22 – July 22 With this New Moon in the sign of Leo, shining its radiant vitality in your sector of money, values and possessions, be wise and don’t spend indulgently. This is a week where Jupiter in opposition to Pluto feeds an obsessive desire to gamble. Watch out for some envy or jealousy.

LEO July 23 – August 22 With the New Moon in your sign this exerts an especially favourable influence. See if you have the go ahead for pushing your interests to the utmost. A good time to learn something new or visit new places. A strong planetary time to make big changes or improvements at work. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 A New Moon edges up your nerves somewhat, so seek your own shining inner self rather than trying to change others of lesser intellect. You may feel invincible but just moderate a desire to control other people to get what you want. Use the help of powerful allies for best results. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 For the beginning of August you may begin a cycle of new and renewed friendships. Some events may disturb your security under a transformational Jupiter / Pluto opposition. Mercury coming into Leo makes you very charismatically sweet-talking with friends and groups. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Mercury is coming up through the sign of Leo to challenge the authority of Saturn. What this means under the New Moon in Leo this week, is that your ideas could be shot down or very sternly edited. Various planets show that too much force results in power struggles now.
