THIS week’s Federal Budget was almost the Last Chance Saloon to make the Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line a reality by the 2032 Olympics.

Now with the Federal Government committing $1.15bn (on top of the previously promised $1.6bn) the final piece of the puzzles appears to be in place and the project - albeit truncated - has never been in a better position to proceed.

The fact that a rail line could soon connect Beerwah to Caloundra in time for the Brisbane Games is equal parts exciting and daunting for the region.

That is, how will it affect the hinterland?

These are questions that all levels of government should be aiming to answer in the near term.

There has been a lot of talk about the benefits of the line.

That it will open up new housing developments, Beerwah East will be fast-tracked, which will alleviate the pressure on housing supply and that more tourists will have access to the region than ever before.

Build a rail line and they will come, but what other infrastructure will be required?

And while the staged roll out might be disappointing, in the context of the stadiums debacle, it could be the only Olympics legacy project worth crowing about.

A rejigged Suncorp, a Gabba paint job and a track and field stadium nobody wanted or asked for?

The DSCRL is a gold medal legacy favourite in that field.

Closer to home, a good question now is: “what does the DSCRL mean for us?”

Does this change population projections? Will we need more schools, shopping centres and industrial zones?

What will the hinterland look like when all is said and done?

How will this impact our way of life?

Change can be challenging for a lot of people, but it’s easier to accept when our leaders give realistic answers to such questions. Watch this space.

Speaking of those keenly interested in the rail line, local

business operators may well be looking at how they can leverage the project for their own goals.

This month we are helping celebrate Small Business Month in May and the incredible contribution our local business owners make across the hinterland community every day.

During Small Business Month we are shining a light on some of those enterprises who, in their own words, write about the passion and dedication behind their ventures.

These enterprises employ locally, buy locally and invest locally, making them a vital part of the region.

GC&M News urges everyone to get behind our small businesses. Purchase their products or use their services and enjoy the mutual benefits of a growing, vibrant and dynamic hinterland community. We are running this campaign across May so it’s not too late if you’d like to get involved. Please call Tina or Lewis on 5438 7445 to ask how you can promote all your awesome work!

A fresh energy to Spanish classics

ACCLAIMED Sunshine

Coast musician, Andrew Veivers brings his latest creative collaboration, Guitarra y Cuarteto to the Hinterland this May.

Directly translating to Guitar and Quartet, Guitarra y Cuarteto promises to be an electrifying and innovative concert series that draws on Veivers’ extensive career and deep passion for flamenco guitar, and is inspired by legendary musicians such as Manolo Sanlucar, Steve Reich, and Manuel de Falla.

Touring locally at venues in Maleny and Eudlo, this bold artistic synergy of guitar and strings introduces audiences to a fresh and energetic blend of Veivers’ original compositions and iconic Spanish works, all masterfully performed by Veivers and the Black Square Quartet.

Although fundamentally inspired by the Spanish classics, speaking with GC&M News, Veivers said the project has also allowed him to follow his passion to honour and

explore new directions for creative expression incorporating artistic cues from French and Danish cinema and diverse musical styles such as Spanish waltzes, lullabies, theatre music, Brazilian jazz and flamenco.

“These are all musical styles that I have enjoyed socially with family and friends for decades but, for the most part, have only rarely drawn on for my composition and performance,

“This project has afforded me the perfect

opportunity to infuse elements of these beautiful musical traditions into my work,” he explained.

He said one of the joys of working within the Australian arts scene was the freedom to draw upon a multitude of cultural influences.

“We are extraordinarily fortunate here to be part of a multicultural society where diversity of cultural influences and expression is encouraged in creative endeavours,” he said.

It is beautiful to have that freedom to explore creative

expression.”

Veivers said audiences could expect the energy and passion of flameco with the dynamic excitement of string quartet. “Their passion for pushing musical boundaries aligns perfectly with my vision for this project, making them the ideal collaborators,” he said.

AN elderly Beerwah couple were beaten and terrorised by a group of teenagers in a case of mistaken identity, police have revealed.

The attackers forced their way into the wrong house in a brazen late night home invasion on November 27 last year.

Police last week announced they had charged six people with more than 70 offences as part of Operation Whiskey Cheviot, established to investigate two violent robberies including the Beerwah attack and one at Glass House Mountains.

Police alleged a group of men broke into the house on Burys Road, Beerwah armed with a gun and baseball bats. They allegedly made threats to two occupants of the home before striking the male victim on the arm with a bat, then stealing a quantity of personal items and fleeing the scene.

The 75-year-old man suffered injuries to his arm during the incident.

On November 30, a 17-year-old Sunnybank Hills boy was charged with seven serious offences including, two counts of deprivation of liberty. He has been remanded in custody and is due to next appear in Maroochydore Children’s Court on June 5.

Months later, on March 21, 2024, police allege the other men in the group broke into a Morrison Road, Glasshouse Mountains property, armed with a meat cleaver and firearm. They allegedly made threats to two occupants of the home before striking the male victim, then stealing personal items and fleeing the scene.

The 47-year-old man suffered injuries to his right hand during the incident. Five 19-year-olds were charged with more than 60 serious offences connected to the violent robbery at the second address, and have all been remanded by police. Detective Acting Inspector, Craig Mansfield, said police weren’t ruling out that there many be more people involved in the two hinterland robberies.

Landcare car winner

YVONNE O’Brien is Barung Landcare’s first electric car raffle winner, with funds raised to go towards developing its environmental projects.

Although the organisation did not make a profit from its first raffle, General Manager, Doug Evans, said it was a great learning experience and were happy to break even. Next year, Doug plans to announce the electric car winner at the 2025 Wood Expo. The winner of the red electric MG car, Yvonne, picked up her new sweet ride on May 7, and said she has never won anything like this before.

“At first I thought it was a scam, so I called the Barung Landcare landline,” she said.

“When they confirmed it was me that won the new electric car, I was so excited.

“I’ve won meat trays before but that doesn’t count.”

The car is worth $50,000, and the MG Caloundra dealership gave Barung Landcare a reasonable price for the raffle prize.

$5.5bn puts rail on track for Olympics

Feds come to the party with extra $1.15bn for Beerwah to Caloundra line

THE first stage of the Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line is set to proceed and could be ready by the 2032 Olympics after the Federal Government promised an extra $1.15bn towards the long-awaited project.

The Commonwealth and State now have matching $2.75bn commitments for Stage 1 of the project, which is estimated to cost between $5.5bn and $7bn.

The Commonwealth already had a long-standing commitment of $1.6bn towards the project, extending back to the previous LNP Government.

Stage 1 will see the construction of a 19km dual track extending from Beerwah to Caloundra.

The project also includes the creation of two new stations, at Nirimba (Aura) and Caloundra, as well as

a significant upgrade of Beerwah station to make way for a third track.

It will also include the protection of the updated rail alignment from Birtinya and Maroochydore.

A $14 million State Government business case study found the project would cost between $5.5bn and $7bn.

The DSCRL will help ease congestion on South East Queensland roads while making public transport a quicker, safer and more viable choice for Queenslanders and visitors to the Sunshine State, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said.

“We’re investing $1.15 billion making sure the Sunshine Coast has the infrastructure it needs to connect it to opportunities in a faster, more reliable

Bonza bust sparks call to assist crew

IN response to Bonza Airlines sudden administration, the Flight Attendants’ Association of Australia (FAAA) has launched a GoFundMe campaign titled ‘Support Bonza Cabin Crew in Crisis.’ This initiative seeks immediate financial support for the cabin crew, who were significantly impacted following the airline’s unexpected move into administration.

Following Bonza’s entering administration, airline staff were stood down only three days before payday to be told they cannot be paid for the previous month. This has meant that Bonza cabin crew, already living pay cheque to pay cheque now face rent, mortgage repayments, power, gas, and food and other bills that they simply cannot afford. Out of a job due to no fault of their own, Bonza cabin crew need urgent help to get them and their families through this crisis. The FAAA will securely manage the funds and distribute donated monies to the Bonza crew who have registered with the FAAA as needing assistance. Open Studios creative trails Girl Guides hut to be repurposed

Dynamic annual arts trail event returns

OPEN Studios Sunshine Coast returns for another outstanding year from this weekend, with over 70 established and emerging local creatives throwing open their studios, pop-up galleries and art spaces to the public.

Pick an art trail and follow the passion as you peek inside the creative wonderlands of some of our most talented local painters, print-makers, jewellery designers, sculptors, mixed media creatives and more in this uniquely immersive event experience.

Celebrating the regions’s vibrant and diverse art scene from May 18-26, Open Studios hosted by Arts Connect Inc offers an unparalleled opportunity to connect deeper with the local arts community.

Throughout the nine day event, art lovers and visitors can embark on self-guided tours to meet local artists and engage with them, and their work, in person.

Maleny painter, Lara Cooper, a finalist in the 2023 Brisbane Portrait Prize, said she was looking forward to sharing her space and practice with visitors, and hoped people would take away a little bit of inspiration and beauty in one form or another from the event.

She said even as a child she had been inextricably drawn to colour and art.

“What keeps me continuing, is the drive to keep challenging myself to try new and different things,” she said. Lara explained that she found inspiration for her work everywhere.

“I love to capture beauty, fleeting moments and peoples stories,” she said.

“Sometimes inspiration for a more complex piece or a series, will strike me as I’m painting something else entirely unrelated.”

Speaking with GC&M news, award wining artist Randy DeGraw said he had always been creative.

Now living in Landsborough, Randy said for over 40 years he had enjoyed immensely the opportunity to create beautiful bespoke wood and stone pieces.

Over the years he said he had crafted furniture, clocks and sculptures and was continually inspired to create unique and creative works.

“Ideas always run through my head, I’m then compelled to find ways to

express them,” explained Randy. To find out more about the event, the artists involved, workshops and where you can pick up a copy of the art trail guide head to social media or the website; www. openstudiossunshinecoast. com.au.

Entry is free, and visitors are encouraged to take self-guided tours, meet

in action, purchase art, and gain a new appreciation for the creativity of talented local artists.

EARLIER this year members of the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC) were advised that the Maleny Girl Guides association, which started in 1962, was to be wrapped up, and lease on the Cedar Street premises dissolved.

Realising the capacity of the building to continue to contribute a viable community space, MDSRC stepped up to manage the building. President Greg Williams said he was pleased to advise the building lease had now been transferred to MDSRC.

“MDSRC has set about ensuring that this valuable asset continues to be used by our community, for a variety of community uses,” he wrote in the MDSRC May 7 newsletter.

“The goal is to create a centre for the broad use and benefit of a multitude of prospective user groups in Maleny,” he added. The space has now been rebadged the Cedar Street Community Centre. Local groups and organisations are invited to reach out to MDSRC with any hall hire enquiries. Behind the scenes of Stiffs

A TOUCH of Hollywood came to the Sunshine Coast last week, with the filming of Sunny Coast Showdown flick, ‘Stiffs’.

The short film - directed by Beerwah-based Ryan Butler - is a comedy mockumentary set in a morgue on the worst day of

the year, April Fools Day. Stiffs will be screened as part of the Sunny Coast Showdown, which is set to premier the short film on June 21-22.

GC&M News went behind the scenes in Nambour last week to get a sneak peak of the production.

“Filming has been really good,” Butler said.

“I’ve really liked how everyone has been bouncing off each other.

“The camera department has been reacting well, we needed that energy from the cameras to show the cast’s energy, which they did well.”

Anna McMahon, who starred in Butler’s award winning Sunny Coast

“I’ve loved it,” she said.

THE Queensland Government has tightened the leash on dangerous dog laws, increasing offence penalties to dangerous dog owners, including up to three years jail if the dog kills or seriously injures a person. These changes to the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act were announced on April 18, following a review of the act, which found a number of crucial recommendations.

$7.57 million of funding has been allocated towards implementing these changes, which includes fines up to $92,000 if an

period in 2024.

EACH May, Queensland Small Business Month sets out to highlight, celebrate and support the thousands of small businesses operating across the state. Small Business Month helps business owners’ network with their peers and develop their skills. It also encourages us to get behind our favourites – retail, trades, logistics, health and others – and let them know we love your small business. Small businesses are vital to our community. The services and products they deliver help customers, clients, and our local economy. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce celebrates small businesses yearround, but we try to amp it up a bit during May. You may have seen or heard that our networking events are growing in popularity, so I encourage you to come to one of them and see for yourself.

As a special event to celebrate Small Business Month, we are

excited to announce that the chamber is joining Martin Kavanagh’s BOQ Beerwah to bring you Chief Economist Peter Munckton to Beerwah for a one-nightonly presentation. Zonta working to eliminate DFV

THE ZONTA Club of Blackall Range is a small club with a ‘big’ mission’ to eliminate gender based violence.

As part of Zonta International, the club works across international, national and local platforms to realize a vision of a world in which women’s rights are recognized as core human rights, and every woman is able to achieve her full potential, and no woman lives in fear of violence.

Ending gender based violence is a significant issue that remains a key area of focus. With this in mind, Zonta Club of Blackall Range is a founding member of Speak Up Now, an interservice club collaboration active in working towards a society free from the scourge of domestic and family violence (DFV).

signs are displayed on the backs of toilet doors (including Men’s toilets), school workshops pushing the message of respect, booklets to assist the older generation to know their rights, forums on Elder Abuse, and several ceremonies held throughout the year in memory of those who have died at the hands of family members.

All members of the community are invited to come along to the candlelight ceremony at Tesch park, Maleny on May 16 at 5pm.

This is to acknowledge and remember those who have experienced domestic violence.

Mark your diaries now for ‘Wuthering heights of Mapleton’ on July 28 to participate in a worldwide fun and inclusive (red dress) event in aid of Speak Up Now.

wear purple for DFV

THE ROTARY club of Glasshouse Country (GC) is calling on local businesses to wear purple on Fridays to raise awareness around Domestic and Family Violence (DFV).

Speaking with GC&M News, incoming club president, Steve Newton, said he hoped to launch the initiative over the coming months and interested businesses could jump on board and purchase the T-shirts anytime.

“We’d been hearing about the rising rates of DFV activity and wanted to help raise awareness around the

issue,” Mr Newton said.

“We also want to show our solidarity for those impacted by standing up together as a community to show we will not accept DFV behaviour.”

Mr Newton said last month he had attended a seminar hosted by North Coast Rotary Clubs where Police representatives described the severity of the DFV problem and asked community members to assist.

“Members of those northern Clubs commenced the campaign being allied to ‘Rotarians for Mental Health’. Local businesses have come on board by wearing Purple DFV T-shirts

on Fridays and now we are looking to instigate a similar campaign locally,” he said.

Mr Newton said the Rotary club of Glasshouse Country belonged to a ‘cluster’ of 12 Clubs from Bribie Island to Alexandra Headland and inland to Buderim and Maleny.

He said he hoped at the first cluster meeting of the new Rotary year on July 21, all 12 clubs would jump on board to help amplify the ‘No to DFV’ message.

“This campaign is not just a one-club wonder, the real impact will be if the whole Rotary cluster becomes involved to spread the message throughout the

“ Although the commencement of a local campaign has been positively spoken about informally amongst incoming presidents, it is our hope that the campaign will be formalised by July,” Mr Newton said.

Owner, Tracey Hallink, said “we have grown so much over the last few years that we just needed more space to spread out for our bigger orders, and production.

We’ve also been able to add some more embroidery and printing machines to speed up production”.

One of the main reasons of the move was a much larger showroom as many local customers still preferred to browse fabrics and items in person before placing orders, which enhances customer experience as well as improving service delivery capabilities.

The business has also made updates to their website experience, including greater capacity for customers to easily browse items and services online.

Tracey and her team are committed to serving both wholesale and retail customers for workwear, PPE, embroidery, and screen printing. Tracey said she was extremely grateful for all the local support received over the last few years and said “the shop local mentality in the Hinterland is well and truly alive and so very much appreciated”.

You

Call out damage done

THANK you for your front page story about DV reports and your editorial (May 7, 2024).

It’s good to see your paper highlight the great initiatives in the area and I look forward to reading about the papers advocacy work and reminders in the future.

When we talk about “change and action” maybe this is one area the QLD police force can improve on in the handling of domestic violence cases.

Shouldn’t all police officers have DVLO training?

I imagine if the Beerwah police office are getting 100 calls a month then larger towns on the Sunshine Coast are getting more.

Women live in fear of violence every day.

It would be comforting to know that when you have found the courage to approach the police with a DV complaint they have the sensitivities and training to deal with your case.

In the 90s my boyfriend tried to take my life.

He beat me because I had stayed late at work on a Friday night for one happy hour drink. In a fit of jealous rage he wrapped a telephone chord (it was the 90s) around my neck and choked me until I passed out.

I survived and was saved by a friend (who I had been ignoring out of shame) but I lost everything. My home, my belongings, my safety to go to work because he would stalk me there, my dignity and trust .

I went to the local police station to get an AVO and was turned away by a male police officer who told me not to waste my time or his apparently.

I still remember the smug look on his face and how he made me feel even less human.

I wish I could say we’ve come a long way since the 90s. Considering the statistics of 35 women killed by men this year I cannot.

To women this is not a philosophical debate, media clickbait or a game.

Women are fighting for their lives.

Women are tired. We’re tired of having to carry this load and advocate for societal change.

Hold

GOOD work on the Federal Treasurer looking into his crystal ball and talking inflation down to a respectable level by the end of the year. And so it should. Households and businesses are doing it tough, yet last week the RBA was still saying it wouldn’t rule more rises in or out.

Most of us actually can’t

We’re tired of being the ones hoping and striving for a better future for our daughters and young girls. The resources are there for men to read and share with other men.

As a starting point for societal change if you see a man being physically, verbally or emotionally abusive to a woman.

Be “man” enough to call it out. Women are tired. Do your own research.

Name and address supplied Unconscious bias?

With so much domestic violence now exposed and so much emphasis on assisting women and children to escape and so many professional people exhausting themselves trying to assist victims it seems to me preferable to prevent it happening in the first place. What’s to stop a perpetrator, after losing a partner latch on easily, through dating apps, to another potential victim?

It seems to me many of us have an unconscious bias in favour of men, as a young woman I experienced boys getting away with behaviour not tolerated in a girl. It’s more than just education and lectures on appropriate behaviour.

Somehow the boys grow up with an inferiority complex, the idea they need to be in control and often resent that women appear to be taking control of their own lives. And of course men resenting what appear

for the environment.

And BTW - grumpy, entitled ‘alpha males’ is where the DV crisis starts. So while its good to see the paper acknowledging DV as a massive problem, we need to go that one step further and ask difficult questions like why does DV cases increase 40 per cent on your beloved State of Origin nights? Any answers Crank? (Lifeline can be accessed at 13 11 14)

doubt that our planet is warming - ask the whales which are struggling to find enough cold water to breed, or the coral which is bleaching enormously, or the glaciers which are fast disappearing.

The argument lately is not if, but why. Atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane are known to warm more in the sun that the rest of the atmosphere so their involvement looks very strong. Those who profit from the sale of carbon are pushing back against that idea and loading the internet with alternative causes, and citing “scientists” without detail of who those scientist are attached to and what their stake might be.

While I agree with our Editor’s belief in parents supporting children, these are just some of the events I have witnessed and had told to me over the years:

A young boy stating that his father never speaks to him. (Ready for grooming?)

A father asking one son where was his “dumb head brother”. A young father playing with his toddler and exciting the child to hysteria, then demanding the child stop, then hitting it because it didn’t obey.

Once I interjected when a father was slapping a child, I was told angrily that the child was much too cheeky.

An older brother thrashing his younger brother, he actually gripped the boy upside down by one leg. When I informed their mother the response was “boys will be boys”.

A friend’s grandson is a barmen in a very classy Sydney hotel, the other barmen make derogatory remarks about the women they serve, since this grandson is not like that the other barmen turn on him!

All these barmen went to exclusive schools.

It’s such a shame that many men grow up with such a skewed view on life!

While it doesn’t surprise me that a grumpy, belligerent, prehistoric, swampdwelling, alpha-male carnivore has right-leaning politics; Crank the Croc, as you are in the media, I’d love you to keep to the facts. Modern EV batteries now last the life of the car, and when they lose effectiveness, they can be repurposed as house batteries for years. They are also approaching 1000 km recharge.

And BTW, if you get hot under the collar about EV fires, just remember that there has only a TOTAL of seven EV fires in Australia, whereas SEVEN petrol or diesel cars go up in flames EVERY DAY (That’s 2500 a year). Good on you for keeping your old cars on the road though - prematurely replacing goods is not good

What Green’s mean?

It would seem that Pauline Hanson, should she ever lose her seat, has real potential as a Travel Agent. The recent itinerary she proposed for the anti- semitic Deputy Greens Leader Mehreen Faruqui may well have fallen on fallowed ground across Australia!

The fairy tale of Green’s anti semitism policy on their web site is patently not the reality of their leadership. I have the photo beside me as I write to remind me of this duplicity.

Faruqui with the protest sign “keep the world clean” and a picture of the Israeli flag over a rubbish bin! The message is unequivocal.

Perhaps Pauline could be encouraged to plan an excursion for the adequacy challenged Chris Bowen.

A Labour sponsored corporate jet to Holland, the home of the world’s prettiest windmills?

I would even shout him a copy of “Don Quixote” to read on the flight!

Angus Richard Glasshouse Mountains Global warming fraught There cannot be any

For those of us who rely on news from mainstream media the reporting is very convincing that reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide in particular is an urgent need, and most politicians now get it.

Going onto the web in search of warming news in fraught with risk, as anonymous sources who have much to lose as carbon use goes down are fighting a rear guard action, seeking to con us that many other agents than atmospheric pollution are responsible for the warming.

Mental health prize

As co-chairs of the Australian Mental Health Prize, we’re reaching out to Australian communities to encourage nominations for the 2024 Prize.

Recent events have underscored the importance of supporting one another during challenging times. It is also imperative that we have responsible conversations that challenge stigma and misinformation surrounding mental health. With almost half of Australians facing mental health challenges in their lifetime, it’s clear that no community is untouched by these issues.

Despite this, mental health funding remains

disproportionately low, exacerbating service gaps and leaving marginalised individuals without essential support. The aftermath of COVID-19 has only intensified these challenges, emphasising the interconnectedness of mental health with broader societal issues.

The Australian Mental Health Prize serves as a platform to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to mental health advocacy and service provision.

Nominations for the 2024 prize are open until July 8, 2024, with winners announced on September 23, 2024. Categories include Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, lived experience, professional, and community hero.

We urge your readers to nominate deserving candidates who have shown outstanding dedication to mental health in their communities.

Landsborough street festival marks milestone

THE Landsborough Museum Street Festival will be celebrating 100 years of the historic Heritage Precinct with a family friendly event on Saturday, May 18.

Tying in with Australian Heritage Month, the Landsborough Museum and School of Arts Memorial Hall will both be marking significant 100 year milestones.

After the success of the Landsborough Museum Street Festival last year, the event is back again, and this year marks the 100 year anniversary of the first meeting of Landsborough Shire Council in 1924. The chambers in the state heritage-listed building now makes up part of the museum.

The Landsborough School of Arts Hall is also turning 100, with both venues collaborating to bring this momentous milestone of the heritage precinct to the

community to enjoy in a family fun day out.

There will be a range of activities on offer including sausage sizzle, live band, face painting, storytelling, First Nation welcome and dance, heritage talks, classic cars, cake, craft, facepainting and more.

Enjoy a delicious morning tea at Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall, and browse displays and history memorabilia.

Museum Officer, Hayley Rowan said she was looking forward to celebrating this significant milestone with the Landsborough and surrounding community.

“The museum and council are very excited to celebrate

“After the success of last year’s event, it is wonderful that we can again come together as a community and look back at the history of the region at the museum and hall.”

There will also be restored ski boats that were used on the Maroochy River in the 1960s on display.

Inside the museum, the new exhibition ‘Grassroots to Glory’ will also be open, telling the story of clubs and people that make up the aquatic sports community on the Sunshine Coast.

In his self-described ‘final book’, The Way We Are, Hugh Mackay - long recognised as Australia’s leading social psychologist - presents a compelling portrait of the country as it stands today.

Hugh argues that we have entered a critical period in our social evolution.

He identifies several major issues: the unfinished march towards gender equality combined with the concurrent persistence of misogyny; the anti-social consequences of social

Don’t hesitate to think outside the box for a completely different approach that isn’t rushed or stressful, and proceeds easily.

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 20

Since your last birthday, three major astrological themes have been at play: the first activating a retrospective life check. The second, a fundamental change of perspective about how to currently move forward in the world. And the third sets your first steps on that new path this week...

PISCES

FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20

There’s something magical about the last days of the current Jupiter/ Uranus alignment. Uranus brings exciting surprises, while Jupiter suggests that whatever Uranus has in store is likely to be positive. So pay attention to this week’s signs, synchronicities and coincidences, because they’ll be significant.

Saturn takes around thirty years to make a full revolution through the zodiac, and the great benefit of the celestial life coach in your sign – as it presently is in yours – is an increased ability to deal with this week’s more difficult realities with intention and foresight.

ARIES

MARCH 21 – APRIL 20

Generous Jupiter is reaching the end of its year-long stay in your money-and-assets sector and won’t be back for more than another decade, so attention to financial affairs pays off this week. Chiron is also urging you to mend something broken, to integrate something that’s been separated.

Pentecost service Support for dementia carers

PENTECOST is a Christian celebration as old as Jesus’ Church, and a Greek word that means ‘fiftieth.’

After the death and resurrection of Jesus, just before He ascended to Heaven, He told His disciples in Luke 24:49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised, but stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”

Jesus tells the disciples to wait for what the original text reveals is ‘dunamis’ (from Heaven). This word is where we get the modern-day word for ‘dynamite.’ Dunamis is miraculous power, might and strength ‘through God’s ability’ to do marvellous works.

Pentecost is the fulfilment of the promise given by God in Joel 2:28, “That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh,” and this promise was fulfilled in Acts 2:1-2

“On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.”

The promise of the gift of being filled with God’s Spirit was not only to the believers of that time, or a select few, but for all believers. And the gift of the Holy Spirit is far beyond being filled with dunamis power; the Holy Spirit is a Person, He is God Himself.

with Peter and Michelle Maher The Range Church, Montville

This is the wonderful and exciting promise we have from God, that if we believe in the One He sent, His son Jesus Christ, and receive His gift of grace for the forgiveness of our sins we can ask to be filled with His Spirit. And through God’s ability, you too will do marvellous works in His name and for His Glory.

Please join us for a combined Pentecost service at ‘Goodlife Church Buderim’ on Sunday 19th May, 5pm.

WASTE MATTERS

Blister Packs

– How to Recycle?

Millions of medicinal blister packs get thrown out each week, ending up in landfill. There are alternatives, as WAM member Carol shared about how she recycles her blister packs.

The majority of blister packs are made of foil and plastic, which need specialist recycling technology to separate the materials.

and sung in relaxed surroundings on the second Saturday of every month.

Carol uses the BRAD program. Visit banish.com. au, buy a postage label ($15 for shoe box size) and mail when you have a full box. Carol reduces the cost by sharing postage with family or friends. Tick the ‘one-time label’ box if you don’t want to subscribe. Some blister packs are

made entirely of foil, which CAN be put in your yellow recycle bin. Scrunch with other foil into a ball first.

WAM’s aims are to educate and empower people to take action on waste and related issues, at a personal and community level. To find out more, visit our website www.wasteactionmaleny.org , Facebook group WAM Waste Action Maleny or email us at wasteactionmaleny@gmail.com.

Karin De Novellis, a seasoned professional in mental health and counselling, is offering a unique opportunity for caregivers to connect, reflect, and recharge through her online taster sessions titled “Kick Off with a Verse.”

The sessions, scheduled for Wednesday, June 5th, from 10:30 to 12:00, and Friday, June 14th, from 14:00 to 15:30, offer a 90-minute sanctuary for caregivers to explore their experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Participants can expect to embark on a journey of selfdiscovery and camaraderie. The sessions start with a grounding exercise to create a relaxed and receptive atmosphere, followed by listening to and reflecting

on a poem. Through group discussion, participants delve into their own experiences and emotions, drawing connections and insights from the shared verses. One of the primary aims of these sessions is to foster a sense of community among caregivers, providing a space where they can feel understood and supported. Participants often find solace in realizing that their experiences are shared by others and that they are not alone in their journey.

Easier to build a bridge

A MAN on his Harley was riding along a California beach when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, God said, “because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish.”

The biker pulled over and said, “build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want.”

God replied, “your request is materialistic; think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking; the supports required reaching the bottom of the Pacific and the concrete and steel it would take!

I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that could possibly help mankind.”

The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally, he said, “God, I wish that I, and all men, could understand women; I want to know how she feels inside, what she’s thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing’s wrong, why she snaps and complains when I try to help, and how I can make a woman truly happy.”

God replied: “you want two lanes or four on that bridge?”

Balls, hops and mallet - can you find the novice player? Representing Maleny and winning at Kilcoy Bowls Club’s Pub Day were Les Bennett, Richard Groves, Ban Fawns and Ian Porter.

MALENY Rangers football player and Maleny High student, Santiago Avenell Perez, has been selected to play in a UK Football Tour, run by Global Football Network.

Santiago trains multiple times a day, five days a week, and school does not slow down his training intensity.

He brings in his own training cones and ball to school to do agility and fitness training on the netball courts everyday except Wednesdays, and Saturday is his club game day.

“I do a half an hour workout every morning, train at first break but not second break because we aren’t allowed, and try to get a 5km run in every

afternoon,” Santiago said.

“I’m motivated because I don’t want to become a person who wakes up, goes to work and then comes home and goes to sleep.”

At this development tour, Santiago will play seven to eight games over 13 days against English youth squads, he will get to train with a pro club and have a game day with them, watch a pro game and get tours of the Anfield and Etihad stadiums.

When Santiago found out he was picked, the deputy principal, David O’Shea, found him literally bouncing with excitement on the way back to class from the office.

“It was actually in class, I got an email from them saying that I made it in and it was a really big shock,” Santiago said. “I got to leave class and

go to the office to call my parents to let them know the good news.

“I was so excited I just couldn’t even work in class.”

The 13-year old football novice has been playing the sport since he was fiveyears-old, and plays central midfield, central attacking midfield, striker and left wing.

“I love the flow of the game, its so much fun watching the ball move around the pitch so quickly and being able to beat players, being one on one and scoring goals and being able to celebrate,” he said.

“My best game was probably a few weeks ago when we played against the Gympie team, I scored five goals, and got seven assists, and it was good because it was in the rain as well.”

Santiago said his family were all very proud of him, Australia in the Olympics

Shining a light on the Beerwah Bridge Club

Local

bridge club would love to see new faces

IN May 2013, some members of Beerwah Golf Club and Maleny Bridge Club, considered playing bridge in the Beerwah Clubhouse after golf.

Within a week or so, they were playing social bridge there.

Within a month, sessions were being conducted every Friday and Tuesday, with players from Maleny, Caloundra and Caboolture Clubs adding to our numbers.

A committee was formed, John Marsden started his first bridge lessons for beginners and the Beerwah Bridge Club was off and running.

Being a relatively small club (as at April 2024, 46 members) the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed.

Our goals are to increase the membership and to introduce people in our community to bridge, one of the most interesting card games in the world.

Living in the Glasshouse – Beerwah area you don’t have to travel far to find your bridge club.

BEERWAH Golf Club has annnounced announce a golden opportunity for individuals to make a profound difference in the lives of amputee golfers throughout Queensland.

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, there’s always room to grow at Beerwah Bridge Club. Our supportive environment encourages players of all skill levels to improve and excel.

Most players have a permanent partner to play with, although a few times per year we play random pairs and team matches, with prizes for the winners, followed by wine and nibbles after the game.

Our Christmas parties are well received by our members with lunch after the Friday morning play, catered by the staff of the golf club.

Over the last few years, we have supported three children through the Smith Family, as well as

The Queensland Amputee Golf Association (QAGA) is gearing up for yet another season filled with inspiration, resilience, and unforgettable moments on the green.

The amputee golfers of QAGA serve as shining examples of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.

Despite confronting physical obstacles, they have honed their skills on the fairways and greens with unparalleled determination and prowess. Donations will directly aid these athletes in covering their travel expenses to various tournaments, enabling them to concentrate on what they do best—playing golf. IN THE Garden

THE seasonal change is here and we’ve finally moved into our “Autumn”.

In southern areas of Australia, Autumn is characterised by an explosion of riotous colour as deciduous trees (mostly exotics) change from being green to being clothed in reds, yellows, oranges, browns and every shade in between.

Sub-tropical autumn is rather different and our floral changes are more muted. Our climate isn’t suited to growing most of those cooler climate European exotics.

But that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on a colourful Autumn.

A relatively new released smallish tree variety which fits the bill is called Ginkgo ‘Lemonlime Spire’.

Ginkgo trees are well known and generally have

Maiden-Hair Fern like green leaves. This variety of the species has dense limegreen foliage in Summer, turning vivid yellow in Autumn. They are easy-care and compact – about 5m tall and 1m across.

If you know your Ginkgo, you’ll know that the female trees (yes they have separate male and female plants) produce fruit which can be a little on the pongy side when they fall and start to decompose – described

as like rancid butter.

But the ‘Lemonlime Spire’ variety are grown from cuttings of only male plants – so there’s no problem with smelly fruit.

Interestingly, they can also be heavily pruned and kept low as a hedge or feature shrub and still retain the Autumn yellowing characteristic.

It was a big hit at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show held in March, where people raved over the size, shape and colour – perfect for the smaller gardens.

Here’s a selection of other trees and shrubs that will grow in our climatic

zone, survive our wet warm summers and then reward you with a turn of colour in Autumn.

Crepe Myrtle Crepe myrtles are generally grown for their colourful flowers and smooth architectural bark. But their leaves do turn a red-yellow colour in Autumn. They do better if cut down fairly low after the leaves fall in Winter, and allowed to shoot and grow back in Spring.

Chinese Pistachio

It is a larger tree (about 8m high and 6m across), but if you have the space, it really is a stand-out when Autumn comes. They develop the most amazing intense range of colours of crimson, red, yellow and orange. And they make great summer shade trees too.

Japanese Maples

Show me the colour LastChance

Although they are really better suited to southern climes, they will handle our weather and will put on a nice Autumn colour show. An advantage is that you can select the colour you want – and they have those beautiful delicate maple shaped leaves. They do prefer a spot more sheltered from winds and harsh sun.

across Australia. Hardy, suited to a wide range of climates, soils and aspects, and spectacular in Autumn. But … a couple of issues include that it can grow very (very) large, it’s roots can be invasive, it has spiky ball fruits that aren’t pleasant to step on, and the leaf drop means you have a lot of raking. On the positive side, all those leaves make the most magic mulch and compost.

This is the classic Autumn colour tree which is grown

Chinese Tallow A largish tree (up to 8m) but it has the most gorgeous heart shaped leaves which turn crimson in Autumn. So you have a tree covered in pretty red hearts … who wouldn’t like one of those in their garden.
