the ripple effect It starts with you. The concept is simple yet the impact is great. The ripple effect begins with your donations which we sell in our stores to generate support for our mission of helping Tennesseans find and keep jobs. Your donations and purchases begin this ripple effect that reaches beyond the lives of our clients and employees. A job is not just a job for the 12 people you are about to meet. Because you give they have a chance to be better parents, children, siblings, employees and members of their community. Because of your donations, you have made an impact on many lives. And the ripple continues because of you.

At the end of what is usually a very busy day, Idalba says she goes home with a sense of satisfaction. “Even if I’m tired, I think that I have a sense of purpose, something we call, en vano, in Spanish.” As a counselor at the Berry Road Career Solutions center, she dives in to help each and every client who comes to her. But, she says, that client must be willing to take advantage of the opportunities Goodwill offers. “When they let me help, and I see their success and their smiles, they make me feel I’ve done my job.” Goodwill allows me to guide others towards a better life.

Because of you, I feel accepted. The gleam is back in Stacy’s eyes. Her mom attributes it to Goodwill. After moving from California where Stacy was in a specialized program surrounded by long-time friends, to the Nashville area where there is no similar program, Stacy’s mom says she was lonely, bored and depressed. Today Stacy’s janitorial job at the Franklin Goodwill store provides the structure and friends she needs and wants. Her mom says Goodwill has changed Stacy’s life. As for Stacy, she says, “I feel wonderful seeing a clean store.” Goodwill has made me happy again.

Because of you, I am a stronger person. There are moments in each of our lives when we choose to make a change. For Bernita that moment of clarity came while she was in a treatment facility and, as she says, “One of the guys told me about Goodwill and I took part in a class about retail.” A month later she was hired as a stocker. She moved up through the ranks and is now the manager of a Nashville-area store. Bernita is in a position to give others what she was given – a chance. “I see them grow, I know they have potential. When they have that smile and confidence it makes me smile because I’ve helped someone.” Goodwill gives me purpose. I go to work every morning and am surrounded by positive people.

Because of you, I am part of a team.
“It makes me feel happy when I see my friends at work,” says Jared, who is in his second year as a member of Goodwill’s A-Team. The A-Team is comprised of many of the company’s most challenged employees. Jared’s job is to hang children’s clothing. “It’s good! I try to be speedy when I hang.” Jared’s parents say he’s happier in this job than he’s ever been and he’s learning good work skills. As for Jared and the money he earns, well, his favorite way to spend that money is to buy video games. “Football games are my favorite!” Goodwill makes me feel good. I have a place to go every day.
