Camp FAQs

Who can attend Girl Scout camp?

How is my child safe?

Camp is open to all girls in grades K5-12. Some camps have entering grade requirements or prerequisites which must be met to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all campers.

Your camper’s safety is our number one priority. We follow state licensing, ACA accreditation and Girl Scout safety standards which include, but are not limited to:

My camper is not a Girl Scout member but would like to attend camp. Can she attend and are there additional fees? Girl Scout camps are open to all girls. Girls who are not members of Girl Scouts will pay an additional $50 membership registration.

When can I register my camper? Registration opens Thursday, February 13 at noon.

What if my girl has special needs? We are dedicated to serving all girls at camp and can accommodate most campers. Contact the camp director to learn how we can work with you to make her camp experience a success.

Can my camper attend with a friend? Yes! Alice Chester Overnight Camp and Silver Brook Day Camp can place campers with buddies. Buddies must be in the same age group and register for the same session. Both buddies should request the other’s name during registration.

Who are the camp staff and volunteers? We select talented, experienced, caring adults to serve as role models. They are selected because they have a genuine desire to work with girls and are trained in areas such as: first aid and CPR; emergency procedures; child development; working through homesickness; team building; and more.

6

Background checks for all adult camp volunteers

Certified lifeguards, health supervisors, and high-risk activity instructors

Training for all staff and volunteers to ensure your camper’s physical and emotional well-being

Can my camper bring a cell phone? No. Our camps are unplugged to let girls connect with nature, others, and themselves. The camp director will contact parents if a camper has a medical problem, is excessively homesick, or has an emergency.

Is my camper ready for camp? Yes! At both day and overnight camp, she’ll be paired with girls her own age, participating in activities appropriate for her level of camp experience. She’ll create memories that will last a lifetime and stories she’ll look forward to sharing with you. If you’re considering camp for the first time, try Day Camp by Community and you can sign up to volunteer and spend the day at camp with her!

How do I access camp confirmations? For Alice Chester Overnight Camp and Silver Brook Day Camp, confirmations are available in your CampMinder account. Day Camp by Community confirmations will be emailed by the camp directors 2 weeks before the camp session begins.

Wands & Wizards: The Magic of Camp Unleash your inner G.I.R.L. (go-getter, innovator, risk-taker, leader)™ and join us for summer adventure inspired by our theme: Wands & Wizards: The Magic of Camp! Each team of Girl Scout volunteers and teens is ready to ignite her curiosity as she takes part in this beloved summer tradition. She’ll keep cool with water fun, explore nature, get creative with art projects, and challenge herself as she learns new outdoor skills. In our girl-led, girl-only environment she’ll feel comfortable trying new things and empowered to take the lead. Day Camps are held for five days at Camp Winding River, Camp Pottawatomie Hills, Chinook Program Center or Trefoil Oaks Program Center for communities throughout southeastern Wisconsin. Each is run by adult volunteers and led by teens. Activities are progressive so girls can continue to learn new skills as they grow! Summer adventure is inspired by our theme: Wands & Wizards: The Magic of Camp.

What new skills will she learn? Activities get more challenging as girls grow! Whether it’s her very first time at camp or she’s a seasoned pro, at a Day Camp by Community she is on the path to becoming a Master of the Outdoors. An example of our skill progression: To teach targeting skills, Girl Scout Daisies or Brownies may learn how to use sling shots; Girl Scout Brownies or Juniors may learn how to target the bullseye with bows and arrows; and older Girl Scouts may perfect their skills with hatchet throwing.

All camps offer an orientation for volunteers. We want to make sure you feel comfortable when you are at camp and we will answer all of your questions before your camp arrives. Troop co-leaders: volunteering gives you a chance to learn new skills to use with your troop during the school year. Plus, you’ll learn lots of songs and games the girls can enjoy at troop meetings. Parents and family members: volunteering gives you special time with your camper to watch her independence and skills blossom.

Silver Brook

Day Camp

Sessions at Silver Brook Day Camp are five days and focused on four themes: Outdoor Adventure, The Arts, Sports and Games, and STEM. A great opportunity to explore new interests! Our trained staff and adult volunteers will guide your girl in engaging activities with hands-on learning. Campers will build their courage and confidence while building friendships with Girl Scouts who share similar interests. And now girls can seek new challenges with Camp Silver Brook’s new badge centered programming! Badges are an outward recognition of inward growth the Girl Scout way and are a great way for her to explore her interests, learn new skills, and show the world what she’s accomplished. Each week every girl will earn a badge based on the track of her choice. They can also earn the “Be a sister to every Girl Scout” petal (Daisies) or the Girl Scout Way badge (Brownies-Cadettes). Offering more girl choice than ever before, each week girls choose the area they want to focus on with activities becoming more challenging as she gets older. In addition to earning badges, camp traditions (swimming, boating, target sports, hiking, songs and games, outdoor cooking, and camper’s choice) will be part of every girls’ experience. Campers are supported by our fully trained staff whose focus is ensuring each girl has the best experience possible. Staff are trained to help girls challenge themselves as they try new activities, expand their friendship circles and become active members of the camp community. 5-day sessions are $185 on or before May 1, $210 after May 1-two weeks before camp. Busing is an additional $55. Fee includes a T-shirt, badge, patch, programming, and some snacks. Mini-session is $130 on or before May 1, $155 after May 1-two weeks before camp. Alice Chester

Overnight Camp

Girls in grades 1 through 12 are welcome

Flexible pricing

There are many ways to enjoy Camp Alice Chester! It all depends on each girl’s interests and readiness for camp.

Summer camp opportunities for girls are subsidized by Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast. This means the cost of providing camp programs and operating camp is greater than the fee paid to participate. For each session, there are three pricing options:

Camp Adventures / Two and three night Great for first-time campers or girls with busy summer schedules. Traditional Camps / Five nights Traditional overnight camp experiences with a variety of activity choices.

Tier 1 reflects close to the actual cost of operating camp per girl. Replacement supplies, maintenance of the buildings and grounds, and property staff support are included in this fee.

Horse Programs / Five nights Five-night experience for campers who love horses. Horseback riding is done with professional riding programs located off-site. Girls will travel to their program site by van or bus.

Tier 2 covers approximately 75% of the actual cost of operating camp per girl and is designated for those who cannot meet level 1 criteria.

Adventure Trips / Five to ten nights

Tier 3 covers approximately 50% of the actual cost of operating camp per girl.

Ideal for the experienced camper or those looking to explore the world. Girls spend most of their time away from camp on their great adventure. Leadership Programs / Twelve to thirteen nights For older girls entering grades 9–12 wanting to become camp counselors or gain experience working with children.

Check-in and check-out Check-in is 2:00–3:30 p.m. Check-out follows a 30-minute family presentation that begins at 4:00 p.m. on closing day.

Select the fee that is appropriate for your family. Flexible pricing does not affect the quality of your girl’s program. The goal of flexible pricing options are to provide the highest quality programs that serve all girls, regardless of their family’s financial situation, and to preserve camp for generations to come. Fee includes a T-shirt, badge, patch, programming, and all meals/snacks.

Questions? Contact Customer Care at 800-565-4475 or customercare@gswise.org.

Transportation You may drop-off and pick-up your girl from camp. If necessary, van transportation is available for a $35 fee. Indicate your desired stop during camp registration. You will be notified a week before your session of the pick-up times. Three stops are available: Marion Chester Read Service Center, Milwaukee Martin Luther King Library, Milwaukee Ives Grove Park and Ride, Racine

Camper Quiz

Is your girl ready for overnight camp? Step 1

Take this quiz with her to help you both decide if she’s ready. Keep track of her points as she answers—and encourage her to be honest. At the end of the quiz, add up the points and see our recommendations below.

Girl Readiness Points Scale: 3 = You bet!

2 = Maybe

1 = Not yet

Step 2 Quiz Questions

Points

Do you enjoy overnight slumber parties at a friend’s house? Do you like outdoor activities such as hiking and swimming? Are you willing to try new foods that you haven’t eaten before? Can you go without TV, video games, computers, and a cell phone? Does going on a new adventure make you feel excited? Do you like to meet new people and interact with other girls, not just your buddy? Can you shower, brush your teeth, and do your hair without much help? Do you enjoy being a part of group activities? Are you ready to sleep in a tent or cabin with 4–8 girls, knowing your counselors are in a nearby tent? Are you willing to help with camp chores such as sweeping your cabin, setting tables in the dining hall, and picking up trash? Do you easily make new friends and warm up to new environments? Are you willing to take turns and share with others? Can you sleep at night without a light on? Are you excited about going away to camp?

Step 3 Add up the points and find out if she’s ready! Less than 18 points: She may not be sure she’s ready for overnight camp. It would be best for her to talk more with you and her friends about the idea. Experiment by trying some of the things mentioned in the quiz or sign her up for a day camp session. 19–24 points: She may want to try a two or three-night camp session. 25+ points: She is ready for any overnight camp adventure! gswise.org • 800-565-4475
