Illuminating Our Communities Through Leadership and Service

Be A Part of the Change

This past winter, Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois hosted two Be a Part of the Change programs for 4th-grade through 8th-grade girls in DeKalb and St. Charles. The event premiered “I Am the Music: A Rock Operetta,” a 30-minute short-film starring local Girl Scouts. Girls learned how to be a part of the change and take a stand against bullying as they participated in activities like making a “peacemaker” box and bracelet, finding out “where you stand” and going “beneath the surface” in Girl Scout Journey activities from the aMAZE and aMUSE series. A demonstration and workshop with self-defense trainer Kevin Engstrom helped them gain confidence and stay safe. There was also a break-out session for the adults accompanying the girls where with local experts they discussed the subject of cyberbullying and how they could identify if their child is bullying. Our DeKalb event featured guest speaker Andrea Bastaini Archibald, Ph.D., Developmental Psychologist at Girl Scouts of the USA. Look for more Be a Part of the Change events coming this fall. If your service unit is interested in hosting a Be a Part of the Change event, contact Brooke Radford-Knight at bknight@girlscoutsni.org or 847-741-5521, Ext. 7147.

Meet Megan, One of Our Girl Scout Gold Award Recipients When Megan Ewan chose “Depression Education” as the theme for her Girl Scout Gold Award project, she hoped to make students at her high school more aware of what depression and mental illness is and to decrease the negative stigma associated with it. She wanted her peers to realize that everyone is going through struggles of some kind and that they’re never alone. Megan created an organization at Lake Zurich High School to raise awareness of mental illness. Through her leadership, this group of students held a Mental Awareness Week at the school. They produced a video and created a hands-on activity that was used with students during P.E. class. Students wrote anonymous notes about an issue that they themselves or someone they know is struggling with in their lives; the notes were rewritten and posted in a glass case at the school. “Girl Scouts has helped me grow in so many ways. It has given me opportunities and encouragement to reach out in my community when I see a problem. Girl Scouts has made me a better and stronger leader and a better person all the way around.” See all of our GSUSA recipients on our website by the end of July.

GSLE Highlights World Thinking Day Aztec Service Unit (Cary and Fox River Grove) celebrated World Thinking Day with A World Thinking Day International Festival! The girls created booths for different countries and took time to learn about other cultures at the event. www.worldthinkingday.org

Cases for Caring Cadette Girl Scout Troop 280 decided they wanted to participate in something that would make a big difference in the world! The girls started looking for challenging projects where they could plug in and get started. When Troop 280 Leader, Bonnie M., mentioned Cases for Caring, which provides unique pillowcases for pediatric oncology patients, the girls were immediately drawn to the project! The girls contacted Material Girl Fabric Shop, a sewing studio in downtown Crystal Lake. Owner Susie Fox offered to put the girls’ project needs in the Material Girl’s e-newsletter. She mentioned quilters often buy an extra yard of fabric when making a quilt. The response from the newsletter was overwhelming, and the troop actually had to recruit additional sewers to help make pillowcases! So far, the girls have made 27 cases and are well on their way to their goal of 101 pillowcases!

Troop 280 picks up a generous donation of fabric at Material Girl in downtown Crystal Lake. The fabric shop advertised the troop’s need for material in its e-newsletter, and the response from the local sewing community was overwhelming!

Earth Day Celebration Dedicated Girl Scout Troops in Chadwick and Milledgeville gathered on Earth Day, April 22, to host a clean-up day in the community. Girl Scouts Seniors and Ambassadors did some advance cleaning, and then the younger girls showed up to finish the job with some old fashioned “elbow grease.” Thanks to Troop 5118 Leader Karin S. for sending in this great community service project!

In the past year, GSNI began partnering with organizations who wanted to invite Preferred Girl Scouts to participate in their organization’s offerings. It was very important to GSNI that these organizations bring a consistent Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) to girls in our council. Organizations that have sent a representative to one of GSNI’s training programs and submitted an application for approval, can offer structured Girl Scout programming to our membership. Their program is aligned specifically to the GSLE and offered only to Girl Scouts. Girls can take advantage of scheduled events that have typically been featured in our program booklets, along with the Preferred Partner logo. Additionally, troops/groups and individual Girl Scouts can contact the organization to arrange a date and time for a troop-specific program event that would be convenient to them. Preferred Partners can be found in GSNI’s program group and on the website.

Community Service Opportunities: Community Service Opportunities are projects or actions that benefit the community, giving girls a greater understanding of their local and global communities. Any non-profit organization that aligns with the Girl Scout mission and values is an eligible Community Service Partner. The activities offered must be free, age-appropriate and involve no money earning. Through community service, girls begin to understand issues in their community and work together toward improvement. Organizations that have service opportunities available for Girl Scouts are listed on GSNI’s website. Community Offering: Organizations with events or activities that are open to the public, or provide a discount or special offer to Girl Scout members are listed in our Community Offering category. These events must enhance the GSLE and support the Girl Scout mission. Community Offerings are featured on GSNI’s website and in the program booklet. To browse program offerings from partners in your community, or to learn more about becoming a partner, click here: www.girlscoutsni.org/events/community-partners 5

Annual Meeting Annual Meeting Recap On April 27, over 100 people gathered at Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center on the campus of Northern Illinois University for GSNI’s 2013 Annual Meeting. These dedicated members, including registered Girl Scouts ages 14 and older, elected incoming Board members, celebrated committed volunteers, and provided insight on important issues affecting the council. Special topics included a report by the Long Range Property Planning Committee revealing members’ vision for GSNI’s service centers, camps, and other properties. After the presentation, attendees took part in round-table discussions on recommendations proposed by the committee. Dr. Andrea Bastiani Archibald, Development Psychologist for GSUSA Program and Research, was the keynote speaker for the event. She spoke on GSUSA’s research studies and the impact Girl Scouting has on girls, especially in the area of bullying prevention. She also recognized GSNI for its aMAZE Journey program partnership with the Rockford School District and mentioned exciting collaborations for the future!

GSNI’s Board of Directors appreciates their service and is confident both girls will make the world a better place as they continue to promote the Girl Scout Mission in the future!

Community Partnership Awards GSNI’s Board of Directors has established Community Partnership Awards to recognize donors and organizations that have significantly supported Girl Scouts in better serving girls and volunteers. In 2013, GSNI presented these awards to Bartlett Nature Center, Elgin United School District U-46 English Language Learners, O’Mara Moving and Storage, Rockford Public School District, United Way of Rock River Valley, and Woodward Inc.

Denise Schrempf Bartlett Nature Center

Bartlett Nature Center, one of GSNI’s Preferred Partners, has assisted GSNI’s outdoor education programs for a number of years. They whole heartedly support council-sponsored programming and local service unit events.

GSNI has worked with Gina Crespo and the U46 English Language Learners for the past two years, expanding efforts to better serve the Hispanic community in Elgin. The partnership has resulted Bertha Torres & Cynthia Febles in great success, including U46 English Language Learners Imagine STEM Program at Elgin High School, TechBridge STEM Program at Canton Middle School and Ellis Middle School, and aMAZE! AntiBullying Program at Ellis Middle School. The team at O’Mara Moving & Storage has been working with the Girl Scout Cookie Program for 40 years. That’s a lot of cookies they have helped move so girls could make cookie deliveries! Mary Timmerman & Karen Squires O’Mara Moving & Storage

Through a partnership with the Rockford Public School District and the Parent and Community Empowerment Office, GSNI has been able to train school counselors in delivering the aMAZE! Journey to all 6th grade Meredith Mackay girls in the school district Rockford Public School District as part of their health class. The cooperation and dedication of the school counselors has been fantastic, and GSNI will serve over 900 girls by the end of the school year! The United Way of Rock River Valley is GSNI’s largest United Way, currently funding the council with over $90,000. This past year, when it became apparent GSNI could not fulfill the Paul Logli obligation of an outreach United Way of Rock River Valley grant from this United Way, they were approached about the possibility of redirecting the funds. With their flexibility, they became one of the first new funding sources for the aMAZE! Journey program with the Rockford Public School District. For many years, Woodward, Inc. has been a significant contributor to Girl Scouts, both with financial support as well as volunteer support. Over the past two years, they have funded new metal roofs for platform tents and Pam Cappitelli buildings along with new Woodward, Inc. windows for the dining hall! Their continued support of Girl Scout camp is extraordinary and commendable. GSNI thanks all the recipients of the 2013 Community Partnership Awards! These local organizations have continued to positively promote the Girl Scout Leadership Experience in all of our communities.

National Girl Scout Cookie Day GSNI celebrated the first-ever National Girl Scout Cookie Day on February 8, with FREE Girl Scout Cookie tastings for the public at our four service centers. Local Girl Scouts were on-hand to talk about how the Girl Scout Cookie Program provides them with savvy business skills like goal setting, decision making, money management, business ethics, and people skills. Visitors had an opportunity to learn more about these skills through the Girl Scout Cookie Program and order Girl Scout Cookies.

SUPER Seller-bration! Our Girl Scout Cookie Program just keeps getting better and better! This year we added a wonderful way to recognize our Girl Scouts who have achieved sales of 500 or more packages of Cookies. We held a Super “Seller-bration event this past April! Each of the girls and their chaperones were treated to a delicious dinner at Cafe 900 in Rockford and prizes were given to our Super Sellers! Special thanks to all of the girls, parents, leaders, and volunteers for their hard work and dedication to the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

GSNI Receives Grand Victoria Foundation Grant The Grand Victoria Foundation recently granted $75,000 to Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois over the next three years for programs in the Elgin area. GSNI plans to use this funding for three separate programs with School District U-46 and the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin. We will serve girls at Elgin area middle schools with the Be a Friend First (BFF) anti-bullying program, which has been shown to reduce bullying incidents by 48% in some school districts. This funding will also be used to give girls in the English Language Learner program hands-on activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) using our Girls Go Techbridge programs-in-a-box. Finally, we will partner with the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin after-school sites to provide girls with Journey programs and STEM activities. We are also working to form more partnerships with Elgin area elementary and high schools; if you would like to see these types of programs at a school near you, please contact Emma Eschenfeldt at 847-741-5521, Ext. 7124. A huge thank you to the Grand Victoria Foundation for making these programs possible! 12
