This is The Big Book The Big Book was created because we actively listened to our volunteers and heard their request to have everything ready at the start of the year. We value our volunteers and want to help them be successful, so we assembled our GSNI dream team and created this book. The book you hold in your hands is meant to help you plan out your Girl Scout year. The first section provides information on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and what that means for you and your Girl Scout. Then, we have our full year of events planned, so you can start scheduling the fun today! Following the events sections, we have additional resources for Girl Scouts to make their year even better. How can you get the most out of Big Book? We suggest you sit down with the Girl Scout(s) in your life and go through the events sections of the book and see which events seem the most fun. Parents and leaders will find the We are GSNI and Girl Scout Extras sections particularly helpful when planning activities for the year. Girls can use this book to talk to parents and leaders about what they want to do this year. Use the guide below to help find information relevant to you!

The Three Keys of Leadership The Three Keys of Leadership are the foundation of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE).

Discover

Girls understand themselves and their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world.

Connect

Girls care about, inspire, and team with others locally and globally.

Take Action

Girls act to make the world a better place.

The Three Processes What makes Girl Scouts stand apart from school and other activities? How girls learn leadership. By forming our events and programs around The Three Processes, girls learn what type of leader they are and go on to make the world a better place.

Girl-Led

Simply means girls are playing an active part in figuring out the “what, where, when, how, and why” of their activities. This means girls are more engaged in playing a critical role as decision-makers in the planning and implementation of their activities

Learning-By-Doing

Is a “hands-on” learning process that engages girls in continuous cycles of action and reflection resulting in a deeper understanding of concepts and mastery of practical skills.

Cooperative Learning

Takes place when all members of a group are working together towards a common goal. It is designed to promote sharing of knowledge, skills, and learning in an atmosphere of respect and cooperation as girls work together on goals that can only be accomplished with the help of others.

Pathways The experience can be as individual as each girl!

It’s easier than ever to take part in Girl Scouting. Whether girls are looking for a year-round or short-term option, what’s unique about Girl Scouts is that there’s not just one way to be one!

Troop

This is a great introduction to Girl Scouting and the most common pathway for girls in grades K–5. Meeting regularly, girls can share incredible experiences with girls their own age, from adventures to community action, all while having fun.

Camp

Does she love learning about nature and the environment? Girls can choose to camp with us during the day or overnight.

Events

Most girls have more than one passion. Choose events centered on her favorites, whether it’s performing science experiments, creating art projects, cooking simple meals, or learning to protect the planet’s water supply.

Series

Girls in middle and high school can take part in this pathway that lets them explore their interests together in a way that fits their schedules.

Travel

Girls will see new places, meet new people, and learn about different cultures and ideas. Whatever pathway she chooses, we design activities to teach girls about themselves and their world. Her year will be filled with the kind of moments she just can’t wait to tell everyone about!

Virtual

Girls can connect online to explore a variety of topics, with girls across town, across the council, or around the world. 7

15 Outcomes of the GSLE Girl Scouts has identified 15 specific outcomes organized around The Three Keys of Leadership. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is designed to make sure every Girl Scout achieves the same outcomes, regardless of how she participates.

Discover

Girls develop a strong sense of self. Girls develop positive values. Girls gain practical life skills. Girls seek challenges in the world. Girls develop critical thinking skills.

Connect

Girls develop healthy relationships. Girls promote cooperation and team building. Girls can resolve conflicts. Girls advance diversity in a multi-cultural world. Girls feel connected to their communities, locally and globally.

Take Action

Girls can identify community needs. Girls are resourceful problem solvers. Girls advocate for themselves and others, locally and globally. Girls educate and inspire others to act. Girls feel empowered to make a difference in the world.

Age Levels Journeys

Girls involved in Girl Scouts work together in their appropriate age level. The following list describes each of the levels.

Daisies (Kindergarten–Grade 1)

Cadettes (Grades 6–8)

Brownies (Grades 2–3)

Seniors (Grades 9–10)

Juniors (Grades 4–5)

Ambassadors (Grades 11–12)

A key part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) is the Journeys program, a coordinated series of activities grouped around a theme, each with a clear starting point (an invitation to explore and take action) and an ending point (an opportunity to reflect, reward, and celebrate). Each Journey includes fun, challenging, and purposeful activities tied to some or all of the 15 National Outcomes (pg. 8) for girls. Journeys help girls: • Gain a global and multicultural perspective • Learn about the history of Girl Scouting and its traditions • Embrace the values expressed in the Girl Scout Law (pg. 6). • Become environmentally aware and develop attitudes and self-understanding that promotes healthy living Need a little help getting started? Check out our exciting Journey Jumpstarts on pg. 48.

Financial Assistance

We know you want to provide your Girl Scout with everything she needs to succeed. We also know sometimes it can be hard to find the money to make that happen. That’s why GSNI is proud to offer Financial Assistance for dues, uniforms, camps, travel, and councilsponsored events. Product Programs In this integral component of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, your Girl Scout learns five important skills when participating in GSNI’s product programs. These skills are goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics—aspects essential to leadership, to success, and to life. Participating in our product programs also helps your Girl Scout’s troop directly. Troops receive a portion of sales proceeds from both the Fall Product Program and Girl Scout Cookie Program. These funds can be used to support Girl Scout activities and service projects at the troop level. Individually Registered Girls (not in a troop) receive “S’More Dough” in lieu of troop proceeds and these vouchers can also be used to support Girl Scout activities and service projects. Girl Scouts also earn reward items according to their individual sales level, as well as “Cookie Dough” and “Cashew Cash.” Cookie Dough and Cashew Cash are earned through the Cookie Program and Fall Product Program participation respectively. All “Dough/Cash” are vouchers that can be applied toward a girl’s fee for things like resident camp, service unit and council events, or even the GSUSA membership registration fee! The dough/cash may also be used in any of our council stores.

Girl Scout Fall Product Program

GSNI’s Girl Scout Fall Product Program normally occurs during October and November, with delivery of the products to troops in mid-late November.

Girl Scout Cookie Program

GSNI’s Girl Scout Cookie Program usually has girls taking orders during a three-week period in January. Troops may also hold Girl Scout Cookie Booths, normally for a four-week designated period during the months of February and March. For both of these programs, please be sure to follow safety guidelines in the information distributed to your Girl Scout. These programs are intended to be a learning experience for girls. Through their participation, girls develop skills they will use for their entire lives.

Each service unit should have a Girl Scout Fall Product Program Coordinator and a Girl Scout Cookie Program Coordinator. If your Girl Scout is registered individually (not in a troop), she will receive information about both programs. If she doesn’t, please contact your local GSNI Service Center and dial extension 7250 to reach our Product Hotline.

Girl Scouts and Faith When anyone joins Girl Scouts, they accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. The Girl Scout Law includes many principles and values common to most faiths. Thus, while we are a secular organization, since our Movement began, Girl Scouts has encouraged girls to take spiritual journeys via their faith’s religious recognitions. Our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, not only had a personal faith base but included acknowledgement of an individual’s faith in our Promise and Law.

The steps Guide to Girl Scouting or on GSUSA’s website at www.girlscou so does her faith, and so each year her My are the same each year, but as a girl grows and matures, Promise, My Faith experience will be different!

Religious Recognitions

Religious recognitions are created by national religious organizations and committees to encourage the spiritual growth of their young members and reinforce many of the values integral to Girl Scouting. While My Promise, My Faith helps girls connect Girl Scouting with their faith, the religious recognitions programs help girls grow stronger in and learn more about their particular faith. Each religious organization and committee develops and administers its own program. The “To Serve God” brochure shows the religious recognitions created by various faith groups. You can find this brochure, a video explaining the religious recognitions programs, and other resources for collaborating with the faith community at Programs of Religious Activities with Youth (P.R.A.Y.) at www.praypub.org/partner_gsusa.htm. Some religious organizations are not affiliated with P.R.A.Y. or may not have a national office. To learn about their religious recognitions, contact local faith leaders.

Volunteer Recognitions

All volunteers are special and vital in meeting the mission of Girl Scouting. That’s why each year GSNI holds a Volunteer Recognition Event to honor our volunteers who have been nominated by their peers for national awards, as well as council awarded recognitions. We ask for your help identifying those outstanding volunteers who go above and beyond, who are always there to help, who have made an extraordinary impact on your troop, service unit, or community, and who deserve special recognition. Anyone—parents, troop leaders, volunteers, and girls—can nominate a volunteer for an award. The time for nominations will be announced on our website or via email, so be sure to check often. 14

You know the power and potential of one girl. Imagine that potential magnified by millions of girls working together! You can be an important part of what amazing girls do through Girl Scouts. We’re always looking for people like you to invest a few hours of your time and talents into helping girls become leaders. There are a wide variety of ways you can be active, including being a troop leader, council volunteer, or working with short-term opportunities. We know you’re busy, so we know the time you spend helping girls will be something you and the girls cherish for a lifetime!

How you can get involved

Sharing your special abilities with Girl Scouts can really make an impact. Girls will benefit from your experience as you lead a troop, share your story, or take them to a council event. If you want to help girls but would rather work with adults, we’ve got openings for volunteers who want to organize community events, lead workshops, and manage communication with parents. Whether you want to volunteer directly with girls, or adults, or even at one of our camps, we would be excited to connect you with the perfect opportunity in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience! Visit our website to join GSNI and get started today!

Get together with your Service Unit, unite all the troops in your school, partner up with another troop, or invite us to your troop meeting. Most events are two hours and include four activity stations. You help find a location and a few station volunteers, and we’ll bring all the supplies and a staff member to coordinate the fun! Contact your Girl Experience Specialist to schedule. Visit our website for a full list of staff contact information. $15/girl ($300 minimum) Maximum number of girls served will depend on specific location and activities. Contact your Girl Experience Specialist to discuss the details.

We’ll put the “A” into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math)!

Who’s a Letterboxer? Girls will visit letterboxing stations and learn how to read a compass, navigate the compass course, and create their own stamps and floating compasses. Then, they’ll search for and find a letterbox or two!
