“Because my mother was a Girl Scout … I learned that I was supposed to volunteer myself. … It is a nice change of pace, when someone tells you that your mother made a difference in their lives by caring enough to volunteer. As a volunteer, I have made a difference in these girls’ lives. I hope that in the years to come, someone will tell my children how I made a difference in their lives.”

Each girl uses her unique voice to create positive changes in the world. In Girl Scouts, girls learn about issues, participate in service advocacy and respond when a community needs food, clothing, shelter or care.

My Self “I learned that it is more important to help the community than yourself. When you help the community, you are helping yourself.” ~ Lauren Sutz, 10, a member of Troop 1947 based at Steele Elementary School in Colorado Springs. To earn their Bronze Award, the troop aimed to get a crosswalk at an unsafe intersection near their school. Neighbors had tried for years to get a crosswalk at that location, and when the first response the Girl Scouts got was ‘no,’ they pushed ahead with research, building a support team of neighbors and experts and took their fight to City Hall. They won over the City Council and saw first-hand that their voices and actions made a difference.

“I want them to see that you can be beautiful without looking beautiful. Inner beauty is someone who is thoughtful, compassionate and kind.” ~ Gracie Forrey, 16, a Broomfield High School junior, who tackled the effects of girl bullying and media hype to earn her Gold Award. In July, she designed, organized and implemented self-esteem workshops “There Could Never Be a More Beautiful You: A Girl’s Guide to Self Esteem, Friendships and Real Beauty” to help girls entering 4th-6th grade realize their worth and recognize what factors affect their self-esteem.
Through Girl Scouting, girls are empowered to believe in themselves physically, mentally and emotionally. They build self-esteem, develop positive attitudes and learn life-long behaviors that lead to healthy lifestyles.

Caring Girl Scouting connects girls to nature and fosters a greater sense of responsibility for caring for our environment.
Girls can be inspired and thoughtful leaders.
My Future
Girl Scouting opens girls’ eyes to myriad opportunities and helps them learn to set goals, become financially literate and offers them a wealth of mentors and role models to inspire them along the way.

My Planet “Joining Girl Scouts is one of the best things that ever happened to me. Girl Scouts is truly a second family. The program has taught me not only how to love myself, but how to love others, how to respect my elders, and how to work with a kind heart.” ~ Ashleigh Harder, 15, a Dakota Ridge High School student, joined Girl Scouts as a 14-year-old and had her doubts about Girl Scouts’ cool factor. She’d been through some hard times and eventually her father sent her to live with her grandmother, who insisted she join Girl Scouts. Ashleigh loves being a Girl Scout.

“We were able to pick potatoes, and make our own recycled worm boxes. The potatoes were for people who can’t afford to buy their own produce. Did you know worms eat jeans?” ~ Cassidy Cheesman, 10 of Lafayette, a Generation Wow Girl Scout who participated in a Forever Green project at Ekar Farms in Denver. To kickoff the 100th anniversary, 100 Girl Scouts were chosen as Generation Wow, outstanding girls whose individual achievements set them apart as leaders. Many of the girls participated, alongside Women of Distinction, in service projects on Aug. 20 and 21 in Colorado Springs and Denver to feed the hungry and give back to the environment.
Girl Scouts have always been green. Through Girl Scouting, girls explore the Colorado ecosystems and learn how to positively impact the environment.
