Dear Neighbours, I bumped into Nicholas Rhea in Helmsley Market last week and thanked him for this month’s article and he said that it was a great shame that for one reason and another the Yorkshire dialect seems to be dying out. I still remember being baffled by certain phrases that my newly-acquired in-laws came out with when I first started coming to the area in the 1970s and had to ask my wife for translations! I had to agree, though, that you don’t hear it so much these days. Being from Hull myself, I belong to a Facebook group called “Hull, the Good Old Days” and one of the recurring themes on there is local dialect words. Judging by the amount of comments each post attracts it looks like they’re not going to die out anytime soon, which prompted me to search for something similar about the North Yorkshire dialect. Sadly, there’s nothing at all, which is a great shame. Perhaps someone reading this might start one up? I thought I’d carry on the dialect theme with this issue so to go with Nicholas’ article I’ve included another helping from the old dialect book, Goodies, and it’s about as tall a story as anything I’ve read! I’ve said here before that if anyone needs a translation of these tales, just get in touch but so far no-one has, so I’m assuming everyone understands every word! It’s that time of year when all good gardeners are itching to get started again and I’m no exception. I’ve already got trays of potatoes chitting, a big bag of onion sets all ready to go in and a list of seeds to buy for the coming season. If you haven’t got going yet, or you need a bit of advice Pippa Greenwood’s article on how to grow your own should be of some help. Holidays aren’t far from peoples’ minds at this time of year so there’s a nice Greek recipe to get you in the mood. It’ll soon be summer! rom time to time, long-time residents express concern that our dialect speech is disappearing. Country people in particular are widely regarded as its main users but it is questionable whether they continue to speak with those peculiar words and sentences that are always rich and interesting, and perhaps confusing. Our dialect is more than just a Yorkshire accent. It depends on the use of words and phrases that might be incomprehensible to others, but I continue to hear such words when I venture onto the North York Moors where I grew up among dialect speakers. Such language, much of which dates to our Viking ancestors and earlier, can be heard among local people discussing things in the markets and inns of this locality. Nonetheless, it can be argued that our dialect is no longer in general use, even in remote areas. There are many reasons – the influence of radio and television, the extended use of mobile telephones, the need to be clear in writing and speech and the movement of people from one area to another. Many of our villages now benefit from what used to be called incomers or off-cummed-uns for whom our dialect sometimes needs to be translated into English. Some words I heard recently include plothery, slape-tongued, nowt-nor-summat, tak hod quick, fettled, glishy, geasegogs, clammy and smout-hooal. Translated they mean, in order of appearance, muddy or dirty; speaking with a posh accent, nothing worth having, take hold quickly, made or completed, too fine a start to the day which heralds storms, gooseberries, sweaty, and a hole in a dry-stone wall for small animals to use whilst keeping the larger ones within the enclosure or field.

by Nicholas Rhea

Dialect is a language which can be difficult to learn and understand , and one method is to concentrate on certain subjects. I was reminded of this when I heard a local man, younger than I, refer to a mistle thrush as a jeremy-joy. It is years since I heard that name – stormcock is a common alternative because this bird sings from tree tops in rough weather but I am not sure where jeremy-joy comes from. I must admit that when he referred to jeremy–joy, I wasn’t quite sure what he meant.

Oh look, it’s a yaller watter-waggie!

For that reason, I thought I would include the dialect names of some of our wild birds. For example, laverock is an alternative for skylark and this occurs quite frequently in placenames around the dales and moors such as Laverock House or Laverock Farm. Other bird names in fairly common use include cushat or sometimes stoggie meaning a wood pigeon whilst a cuddy is a hedge sparrow, now formally known as a dunnock or hedge accentor. I seem to recall that cuddy was also used for house sparrow – which some of us would call a spuggy. One peculiarity is that birds of the finch family were given alternative dialect names. was spink, which is a means of recalling the alarm call of some finches, and the other was linney. Goldspink was a goldfinch; bullspink, somewhat surprisingly was a chaffinch whilst a bullfinch was called a bully. The word linney for finches comes from linnets, these being popular as caged singing birds during Victorian times. A brown linney was a linnet, a gowd or gold linney was another name for a goldfinch, a red linney was a redpoll and a green linney was a greenfinch. One interesting name was French linney for a brambling which is a winter visitor to these islands, coming in from Scandinavia or even Russia. Once here, it will often mix with chaffinches, which it closely resembles. As a child growing up on the North York Moors I rarely heard a grouse called by that name – it was usually Mooer Bod (moor bird), a green woodpecker was always a yaffle and a magpie was a nanpie. Oddly enough, an oyster catcher, whose black-and-white colours are so

similar to those of a magpie, was known as a sea-nanpie. Throstles are thrushes and this is another example of dialect names of birds being used for houses. Throstle Nest was a common house- or farm name, but just up the lane from where we lived was an even more delightful house name. It was Wrens’ Nest which conjures up feelings of cosiness, safety and family life. Its dialect name was Stumpy Tail which doesn’t have quite the same appeal. An ullot or yowlet was a barn owl. Willywagtail was used for the pied wagtail whilst the yellow wagtail was yaller watter-waggie. One name which has crept into our folklore stories is Gabriel’s Hounds, this name includes most kinds of wild geese that fly overhead at night, their strange cries alarming the people on the ground who once believed the noises heralded death.

Morses Pitcher

It’s been a while since I’ve presented you with a Yorkshire dialect story, from the book, “Goodies”, printed sometime around the time of the first World War. The stories in the book are transcribed from meetings with “the natives of N.E. Yorkshire” and they are “illustrative of their harmless and often unconscious humour”.

D

id yer ear aboot Morses Pitcher, t’ pot awker, gerrin is cart skelled oop last week? Ee were gahin doon te’ Melia’s, i’t’ wood yonder, an yer knaw what a brant ill it is doon te urr oose, wiv a greeat bank oopp at teeah sahde an doon at t’ other? Greek Vegetable Bake Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes

This hearty veggie dish makes a great family midweek meal. Serve with a crisp green salad or some crunchy home-made coleslaw.

Ingredients: • 2 large potatoes, peeled and thickly sliced • 1 large aubergine, trimmed and sliced • 3 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 150ml vegetable stock • 1 tsp dried oregano • 2 tsp tomato puree • 300g thick Greek yogurt • 2 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tbsp cornflour • ¼ tsp grated nutmeg • 1 large tomato, sliced • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Tip:

Sprinkle with some freshly grated Parmesan cheese or thin slices of mozzarella cheese before baking to make this dish even tastier!

Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil. Add the sliced potatoes and simmer for about 5 minutes until almost tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water. Set aside. Place the aubergine slices in a shallow bowl and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Heat a heavy-based frying pan over a medium heat. Cook the aubergine slices for 1-2 minutes on each side until tender and just golden. Remove and set aside. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and gently fry the garlic for 1 minute. Whisk in the vegetable stock, oregano and tomato puree and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat. Preheat the oven to 190C, 170C fan, Gas Mark 5. Layer the potato and aubergine slices in a large ovenproof dish (at least 8cm deep). Season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper between each layer. Pour the stock mixture over the vegetables. Place the yogurt, eggs and cornflour in a bowl and beat together until smooth. Add the nutmeg and season lightly. Spoon the mixture over the layered vegetables and top with the tomato slices. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes until the top is golden and bubbling.

Grow Your Own by Pippa Greenwood

I

’m a great fan of home grown vegetables, particularly as growing my own allows me to choose to eat only organically grown fruit and vegetables, which are free from chemical pesticides. Even if you only have a tiny patio garden or backyard, you can brighten up your supper table with some good looking vegetables, home grown in containers. It is important to use large containers. Smaller ones may look fine but most vegetables need an evenly moist compost around their roots at all times, and so a larger volume of compost is much easier to look after. They will need to be positioned in a sunny spot as vegetables won’t crop well in a gloomy position. Grow-bags will do but they don’t exactly look pretty. In addition, they often seem to contain pretty poor compost and, when it comes to keeping growing bags adequately watered, they are nothing short of a nightmare. Large flower pots or planters are the best bet, and you can use terracotta, plastic or glazed pots. Make sure that the containers are well supplied with drainage holes, and that you have a layer of broken pots on in the bottom. I suggest using either a standard multi-purpose compost or a multi-purpose mixed with a loam based compost – both produce good crops and are fairly easy to maintain. You can incorporate some controlled release fertiliser granules or feed regularly with a liquid feed. There are lots of different vegetables that can be grown in containers but sometimes getting the right variety can make all the difference to how well they perform. Check labels or seed catalogues as those particularly well suited to life in a pot are described as such. If you like home grown beans you can use any variety of dwarf French bean, or if

you prefer, a runner. The miniature runner, ‘Hestia’, has pretty red and white flowers and doesn’t need a support to climb. Cucumbers can be grown in pots; choose a variety such as ‘Patio Pick’ which should manage to crop well despite its small size. Provided you have a large and deep container then courgettes are also worth a try, and do remember to keep them well fed. If you like hot pepper and have a sheltered, warm spot then try the crazy looking, heavy cropping ‘Medusa’ or the pretty but hot ‘Etna’. Salad crops can all be grown in a growing bag or other container, and are guaranteed to look good. For some really wacky colour try growing the richred stemmed Ruby Chard or ‘Bright Lights’ chard with stems in pink, orange, red, yellow and white. When it comes to maintenance, remember that anything growing in a pot needs more TLC as its roots will not be able to tap into the further reaches of the soil to find moisture and nutrients. Plenty of food and water is a must, and I tend to use a high potash liquid tomato feed, which works a treat. To keep your pots free from slug and snail attacks, try using sticky-backed copper tape stuck in a complete ring around the top of the pot or planter. Once everything is growing well and cropping, don’t forget to pick patio veg regularly if you want the plants to keep cropping. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ veg growing system, biological controls, fleece, copper tape and lots more besides.
