by Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro Dolly Towne is a well-connected bookkeeper in private practice specializing in the food service industry, but she wasn’t always. Dolly, her parents and siblings migrated from Lebanon to Rhode Island to join her family who was living here when she was around 7 years old. She always liked the four seasons and the ocean. More recently, she has found excellent opportunities to become a very successful business leader and bookkeeper in Rhode Island. Her husband Richard, a project manager, moved to Rhode Island from Florida for growth within his company. The two met and married about 5 years ago. Their son, Richie, was born almost 4 years ago. Dolly’s career began with one of the large national banks in Rhode Island doing a number of entry level jobs. She benefited from the corporation’s tuition payment program earning her degree in business management, beginning a more specialized career path. When her son Richie was a few months old she decided that she needed more career opportunities and flexibility than her previous employer offered her so she resigned, enjoyed some family time, and explored new career paths. Dolly began her career search on the internet looking up home based businesses. She found some reputable ones and some that were questionable at best. One that resonated with her academic training, previous career experience and interests was bookkeeping. She identified an internet training program, met with a student in the program to learn more about the program and made the decision to invest in the program. It was an excellent decision for her because she acquired the necessary technical skills and also learned how to be a business person. Stepping forward three years, today she is recognized and highly respected independent business professional specializing in bookkeeping.

establish a side position before resigning from your day job. You can learn a lot about your options doing internet searches about “work at home jobs”. Since not everything you will read about is good quality (or even legitimate), before spending money check out references from the programs you are considering. Acquire business skills. Perhaps, you can learn these in your program. If not, check out your chamber of commerce, SCORE (Senior Core of Retired Executives) and the Small Business Administration to get started. These skills will help you decide what entity your business should be, get your business registered, get the right type of insurance, etc. Build relationships. A successful business owner develops relationships with people in the community via networking and marketing. Spend some time each week either attending a local networking event, networking on the internet or otherwise meeting people. Getting business may be more challenging than actually doing the work. Determine your workplace and work times. Will you have a home office, rent shared office space, or set up a business location? Arrange child care, pet care and other essentials.

Dolly offers some suggestions to help you decide if opening a business is for you, learning the skills necessary to operate the business, and becoming connected so you can be successful.

Dolly is a true business partner. She would like to help you become more successful in your business by providing you with the information you need to make the best business decisions, provide supporting documentation for tax purposes, bank loans, etc. Dolly and her team will help you attain financial security, get your time back and regain control. In addition to providing the necessary documentation, she will provide video, in-person meetings and help you understand your business. If you aren’t in business yet Dolly would be pleased to help you decide if opening a small business is for you. If so, she will help you set up your financials and guide you through all aspects of setting up your business. You may reach her via her website http://www. PREPARE YOUR

ASPHALT PAVED SURFACES FOR THE BRUTAL NEW ENGLAND WINTER When it comes to protecting your pavement investment, there’s no better time to perform preventive maintenance than the fall. As the leaves’ colors start to take on a warmer hue and the temperatures cool down - you know it’s time to get your asphalt paved surfaces ready for the New England Winter. That means the snow, ice, road salt, and chilly temperatures that lie ahead. The change from Fall to Winter often creates periods of freezing and thawing as temperatures fluctuate above and below freezing, back and forth especially in New England. Water can seep into all the cracks and crevices, then freeze, the ice then expands causing larger cracking and other damage. That’s why driveway maintenance is so important in the Fall. There are some measures you can take this fall to make sure your driveway is looking its best year-round. That being said here are some pro tips you can use to prepare your asphalt paved surfaces for the brutal New England winter weather.

Potholes are formed when water gets under the pavement and to the sub-based through cracks in the asphalt. The water loosens the sub-base and in the winter freezes. When the freezing water thaws out you are left with a void. The weight of cars then sinks into this void, causing a pothole!

Clean the surface Pressure washing your paved surface removes dirt, debris, chemicals, and petroleum products that can otherwise be carried into cracks and cause additional damage. Pressure washing also adds to the curb appeal of your driveway and/or parking lot. This is something you should be doing on a regular basis, but it’s especially important before you have any other type of maintenance done. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to clearly see what type of wear and tear exists on the paved surface if it’s covered with leaves, dirt, or other debris.

Why Hartford Paving? Our goal at Hartford Paving & Site Construction is to provide lasting quality, superior value, and professional service - all the while building long-term relationships with our customers. Our family has over 40 years of experience servicing Rhode Island, and all of our employees are experienced in all degrees of pavement construction and materials applications. Our experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly staff will be happy to assist you with your next paving, asphalt, or construction project. We take great pride in every single one of our projects, whether it’s commercial, residential, large, or small. Whether your humble family of four or a fortune 500 company - you can trust Hartford Paving & Site Construction to take good care of you. If you need to maintain your lot or driveway or pave a brand new one, we are equipped to turn your vision into reality!

Protect Your Edges An important but often overlooked step in asphalt maintenance - edge your driveway to keep grass and weeds from invading and creating cracks that invite moisture into the material, opening it up to permanent damage. Closeby tree roots are also a big culprit for damage. Even though they grow slowly, the damage can creep up on you.

Identify Potential Issues You may not be a professional paving contractor, but you should be able to see any obvious signs that your paved surface is damaged. Look for things like visible cracking, crumbling, flaking, potholes, or depressions in the pavement where water is collecting. This includes even tiny cracks. Any of these are probably signs that your pavement needs to be repaired - small problems can quickly cascade into worse ones. Make a list of items that need to be addressed. Knowing is half the battle.

Sealcoating Sealcoating is crucial for your asphalt driveway during the long, cold winter months. It creates a barrier against moisture and prolongs the life of your asphalt pavement. It also enhances the asphalt’s appearance and color. Sealcoating should be done every 2 to 3 years. Unsealed asphalt is susceptible to cracks which, if left untreated, can result in costly repairs of potholes or sub-layers.

Get Professional Help This one may seem a bit on the nose, but it’s much more important than you’d imagine. It’s always a good idea to have a trained professional handle the repairs for you. While it’s possible to purchase some type of patching material from a home store and do it yourself, improperly repaired pavement can make it even more susceptible to becoming further damaged later on.

If you need to maintain your lot or driveway or pave a brand new one, we are equipped to turn your vision into reality! For more information or a free estimate, call us at 401-942-8857 or submit an inquiry on our website www.hartfordpaving.com.

Remove 1 cup of the batter and place in a separate bowl. Spread the remaining batter over your pie crust. 4. Put the pumpkin puree and spices in with the 1 cup of cheesecake mix and gently blend until smooth. Carefully spoon this over the cheesecake batter, spreading to the edge of the pie. 5. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, checking that it is done with a gentle nudge before removing from the oven.Let cool then place in the fridge for at least 3 hours, if not overnight. Serve with a big spoonful of Cool Whip. BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

Far from two triangles eyes cut out with a kitchen knife, my unique pumpkins turn heads on spectators of all ages. Article by Cassandra Remillard

What do you get when you combine a passion for Halloween and sculpture? 3D pumpkin carvings! Since childhood, I have loved all things Halloween: the costumes, the movies, and especially carving the annual Jack-O-Lantern. While studying sculpture at UMass Dartmouth in 2014 I decided to take my figure modeling experience to a new medium, using my great grandfather’s wood carving gouges, I sculpted my first 3D pumpkin. Since then I have carved over a dozen pumpkins each season. After a while, I noticed myself getting better and pulling more personality from the pumpkin each time! Over the years, I have had the opportunity to showcase my carving skills to 1000s of people! Some of my career highlights were displaying at Rhode Island’s own “Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular” at Roger Williams Park Zoo, and demoing for “Rise of the Jack-O-Lanterns” in Boston and on Governor’s Island in NYC. Most weekends in October, you can find me carving at local farms across New England. Far from two triangles eyes cut out with a kitchen knife, my unique pumpkins turn heads on spectators

of all ages. People who see my pumpkins often wonder where I get the inspiration for some of the wacky faces I carve. Now the secret’s out! I always keep a mirror close by when working on a pumpkin. I’ll make a ridiculous face in the mirror and then mimic it in the carving. There truly is a piece of me that goes into each and every carve. One of my favorite parts about working with pumpkins as my medium is the short life of my creations. After I complete a crave I will document it through photos then let mother nature take over. I’ve found squirrels are huge fans of my work! Each year brings the opportunity for bigger and better carves... If you’re reading this thinking you could never make something like that, you are wrong! With a few simple tools and enough practice you too can carve 3D pumpkins! Grab your friends, book a private class for up to 10 people, and see what you’re capable of. To book a carving class, carving demonstration, or view more photos please visit....
