I Y OD

by Dr. Ronald G. Shapiro Rachel Armentano, a Rhode Island-based artist and owner of the Harbor Creative Arts Studio, is a native New Englander who loves all things nautical and beach-related as much as she does art. Rachel’s passion is creating an interest in art and showing people how art impacts the world. She helps people of all ages develop critical thinking skills by encouraging empathy, collaboration, and confidence through art. Rachel provides innovative art classes designed to enrich children’s academic development and socialemotional wellbeing through open-ended exploration of many materials and topics. She achieved degrees in Studio Art at Skidmore (BS) and Art Education at Tufts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (MAT). Her professional experience included teaching elementary through high school-aged children in public, charter, and independent schools as well as museums and a variety of non-profit organizations. Her expertise in education goes beyond the art room, as she has coordinated large service-learning and project-based learning experiences for students, presented at national education conferences, led professional development workshops for teachers, and stays engaged in education policy efforts. Rachel, her husband Bob (a software analyst), and children Daphne (age 6) and Tate (age 4) moved to Wickford several years ago to enjoy the natural beauty of Rhode Island. After spending the past eight years as a local middle school art teacher, she taught classes privately and partnered with local businesses to host community art events. Mid-pandemic she went from teaching outdoor in-person art classes in backyards, garages, and parks to opening her first studio in Wickford. After just a few months, Rachel had the opportunity to quickly expand her thriving studio. She just moved to a larger studio at 7592 Post Road, North Kingstown, to have more space for her art classes and events. She offers art classes for preschoolers through middle schoolers in groups of eight to twelve children and hosts popular toddler programs, family activities, and an array of other arts-based community programs like storytimes and open studio sessions. Rachel suggests that you consider the following to help your family, friends, and business associates to engage in art projects:

• •

Building Problem Solving Skills and Confidence in Kids Through

Art

You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy art. Art is for everyone! And it is constantly impacting the entire world. Art provides an excellent way to develop problem-solving skills. Start with simple projects and limited materials. Then increase complexity as you and your children or students become more proficient. Experiment with art supplies and techniques by varying: Surface: paper, cardboard, bags, flowerpots, pinecones, old toys, t-shirts. Mark making materials: pencils, markers, different types of paints. Tools: brushes, q-tips, stamps, stencils, rulers. Adding texture: stickers, pom-poms, collage materials. Art isn’t just painting with paper, an easel, and brushes. Art and design are essential to many professions, including medicine, dentistry, retail store design, engineering, architecture, computer software, and marketing. If a given art medium doesn’t work for you, try another one. On the other hand, don’t give up on a medium after only one try. As you try a medium a second time, you may be more familiar with it, more confident, and enjoy it more. Art encourages you to observe and interpret the world. When looking at a work of art, try thinking about the questions, “What do you see? What do you wonder?”

Rachel would enjoy having you, your family members and friends participate in her scheduled classes, camps, or special events. Please contact Rachel via email to learn more about what art can do for you, your family, or your organization, subscribe to her mailing list or sign up for a class. Her email is HarborCreativeArts@Gmail.com. Her website is http://www.HarborCreativeArts.com. Whether class is already back in session for your child or you’re getting them ready for a change in routine, back-to-school season is now in full swing!

Some kids may be sad to see summer ending while others may be excited to see their school friends again, but very few kids (if any) are excited about homework. For a part of a student’s day that can already feel stressful or boring, taking on the challenge of homework in a loud or gloomy environment can make work feel even less fun. That’s where a homework station can be really helpful! Not only can a homework station help your student stay focused on the task at hand, so that they can get through their homework faster, but it can also change their attitude about homework as a whole! While there are thousands of different design and layout options, your child’s homework station doesn’t need to be incredibly complicated. A great homework station tends to boil down to these 5 tips:

1. Find a quiet spot

With many people adopting “work-from-home” office stations over the past year, many adults have seen the importance of having a dedicated space to get their work done at home. Trying to be productive in the dead center of a busy house can be difficult for even the most well-disciplined and motivated adults. So as you could imagine, it can be even more difficult for students who are developing their self-discipline and motivation skills to focus on the task at hand. The most important part of setting up a homework station for the student in your life is to make sure it is away from noise and distractions.

2. Pick out the supplies

This is an important step that’s easy to overdo or underdo. Does your first grader need 148 different shades of colored pencils and a 3D printer? Probably not. But we’re sure they would enjoy a little more than a stack of printer paper and one blue pen. All jokes and exaggerations aside, don’t overthink this step. For younger students, start by asking their teacher what they would recommend. Many teachers will send students home with a list of supplies on their first day of school. From there, ask your child what they think might help them with their homework to round out a few more items on your shopping list. For older kids, you can likely skip the asking the teacher step and trust your student.

4. Make the space bright and motivating

Consider finding ways to make a student’s homework station an inspiring place to be. While we can’t always control our students’ surroundings, doing whatever you can to spruce up the space surrounding where your student does their homework will help them enjoy homework more which may result in a more positive attitude about homework and with it, better performance. Little things like painting the walls a bright and fun color or adding a few educational posters can go a long way. Making sure the room is well lit with natural sunlight has also been shown to boost mood and productivity. But as a warning, it’s still important to keep Step #1 in mind and don’t let the decorations get out of hand to the point where it gets distracting.

5. Make it a team project!

While you may be doing most of the work to put this station together, remember who this workstation is for! Asking your kids to help you come up with ideas and design their homework space can be a great bonding experience and a chance to work together. From browsing the internet for little ideas together to putting the homework station together, making sure your child feels included in the process will help them build their confidence in their abilities to take on new tasks. It will also help them feel more at home in their workspace.

3. Stay organized

This goes hand-in-hand with steps 1 & 2. Making sure your student’s homework station has drawers and cubbies to keep any toys and extra supplies out of the way will help them stay focused. As you could imagine, for students who love to draw, the box of crayons on their desk may slow down their math homework. At the same time, the essentials should be close by so they don’t have to search for what they need.

Now that you know where to start, all that’s left is to get going!

The student in your life will thank you. While you will likely need to get some supplies and decorations from some bigger companies, we strongly recommend shopping local and supporting RI businesses for as much of your project as you can. BUY LOCAL, SHOP LOCAL

Olneyville New York System 18 Plainfield St in Providence & 1012 Reservoir Ave in Cranston In the early 1920’s, Nicholas Stevens and his father Anthony came to the United States from Greece and settled in Brooklyn, NY. Brooklyn is where they operated a very popular candy shop. By the 1930’s, Nicholas and his family moved to Rhode Island and opened a small restaurant where they had a very limited menu, including hot weiners. Their business took off and they moved to a bigger space in 1953 at 20 Plainfield Street, which is the same location as today. In 1981, this family run business was doing so well, that they decided to open a second location, which is 1012 Reservoir Ave in Cranston.

A hot wiener is closely associated with New York’s Coney Island. Although wieners served by New York Systems today have little resemblance to the traditional Coney Island hot dog, restaurant owners continue to use the name as a way to advertise this popular local cuisine. The traditional wiener is made with a small, thin hot dog made of beef, veal and pork, served in a steamed bun and topped with celery salt, mustard, onions and seasoned meat sauce. This isn’t just your typical hot dog, these are mouthwatering and so incredibly delicious! You can have a hot wiener “all the way” for just $2.49! What does that exactly mean? It means you want it with all the toppings available. We recommend you get them all! You can add a coffee milk from Munroe Dairy and cheese fries and you will have yourself a full meal for very cheap. The best part about Olneyville New York System is it is open all the time! Whether you want lunch, or a late-night 2 am snack, they are open and ready to serve you with smiles on their faces. They are open Sunday-Thursday 11 AM - 2 AM and Friday-Saturday 11 AM - 3 AM There is no place like Olneyville New York System! Say hello to South County’s new vegan food delivery service! Husband and wife team Dean and Julie Couchey rang in the new year by launching their business January 1, 2021, and success has come quickly. As a classically trained chef, Dean set out to prove that vegan food does not have to be boring. The menus are a combination of homestyle and international cuisines inspired by the Couchey’s travels. With a fresh menu updated weekly, SoCo Vedge takes orders midweek for contactless delivery on Sundays. They’ve got vegan food delivery down to a science, especially with help from the RISBDC. Starting a business is definitely not the easiest job in the book—but Dean and Julie took all of their start-up questions to the experts. RISBDC counselor Josh Daly provided the Coucheys with broad information on legal entity, regulatory requirements, and more. He also walked them through crucial processes, including navigating the requirements for food businesses through the RI Department of Health.

With Josh and the RISBDC’s help, the Coucheys are enjoying early success for SoCo Vedge. In their words, “It is great to have the RISBDC to help guide new small businesses. The path for new owners is not easy, but the RISBDC helped us to navigate it.” Josh and the RISBDC are excited to watch their business grow! To learn more about SoCo Vedge, visit their website at socovedgeri.com. Are you ready to start writing your business success story? It’s all about the journey when looking for a car. The purchase of the car took maybe 2 hours, but the hunt took forever. Article by Mike Casale

When I journey out to car shows, the one thing that I have always loved is the passion for certain makes and models. There are so many enthusiasts that showcase their loyalty, and it is amazing to see their collections. Sometimes you find a rare gem that you haven’t seen in 30-40 years. This is the case when I met with Michael Packard and his 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. This car was bought brand new out on Route 44 in East Providence back in 1979. The car has been in Rhode Island it’s whole life. The Trans Am is very loved and makes people happy whenever they see it out and about. It is definitely a good conversation piece. Michael acquired the car by searching through Craigslist. He had been on the hunt for one of these for some years. After looking the car over, Michael made the deal and took the car home shortly after. As Michael said best, “it’s all about the journey when looking for a car. The purchase of the car took maybe 2 hours, but the hunt took forever”. For the car itself, the specs are mostly stock from 1979. It has a Big Block 403 Oldsmobile motor, automatic transmission, 373 gears, original paint and the original interior. Michael is a GM enthusiast. He has several other GM vehicles, including classics and newer vehicles in his personal collection. When I asked him why he is such a GM enthusiast, his response was that “in the late 70’s and early 80’s, it was hard to like anything that Ford was producing, and unless you were a fan of the Chrysler K-Cars, you really only had GM to rely on for making nice looking and well-performing products”. Michael always loved the lines and the decal packages of the Trans Am. In his collection, Michael also has two 1980 Corvette’s and a 1980 Cadillac Seville that has been completely restored. He also has a 2019 C8 Corvette as his new muscle/performance toy. Michael goes to some of the car shows, but he is not interested in the trophies. He mainly uses the cars just to cruise around, have a good time, and chat about

being an enthusiast with some of the other great enthusiasts out there. Michael likes seeing so many people get pure joy out of seeing his cars. As Michael said, even with the Cadillac Seville, “Some people had not seen that car since maybe their uncle or grandfather had one almost 40 years ago”. That brings joy and pleasure to see them reminisce about the past. Michael is currently a member of the Corvette club in Rhode Island. As far as the ride quality, Michael has made it very clear that this car rides even better than some of the new luxury cars, including his own personal Lexus. It is just very tough to replicate that kind of ride quality today. From the finest details of the Trans Am, to the overall build quality, Michael truly enjoys every aspect of this car. The team at Xtreme Restorations has always been very helpful to Michael. He highly recommends their work. They are extremely knowledgeable about the Trans Am’s and the F-Bodies in general. When Michael brought this Trans Am in to Xtreme Restorations, there was not an extreme amount of work that was needed, as the car was all original. It was more touch up work, including some paint on the fenders, suspension work, new carpet, and some minor details that needed to be tweaked. Getting parts for this car was somewhat tough, but that is what makes the team at Xtreme so good. Along with Michael’s research and passion, they were able to work together to acquire exactly what was needed. The only major issue was that this car had a custom car stereo in it when Michael acquired the vehicle. To get that out was a bit of a pain, especially since he wanted to restore to original specs. But they were able to work around that, and remove the aftermarket stereo. What was so unique about this Trans Am was that you see lots of Black Trans Am’s out there, but not too many with the Camel Interior, which goes really well with the Gold wheels and the Phoenix graphics on the car. It it just another element that makes this car so unique.
