Chamber Times www.chamberinaction.com January 2015

WITH A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK As we begin the New Year, we take time to reflect everything that happened in 2014. It has been a good year. Overall, it has been a great year for the South Dade Chamber of Commerce. As of mid-December, we welcomed 63 new members, and we are looking forward to seeing where we are ranked statewide among other chambers. In 2015 we are celebrating the Chamber’s history, all 100 years of it. Whether you live or just work here, this history makes all of us proud. In keeping with celebrating the past while embracing today’s growth and looking to the future, the name, South Dade Chamber of Commerce and the new logo that links the “old to the new”, were adopted in late 2014 and we invite you to become a part of a Chamber that is, “The Voice of Business since 1915”. History is one of many things we share as a community. As a member of a chamber, you are part of another community; a business one. A community by definition is a group tied together by mutual interests and committed to the well-being of all its members. The South Dade Chamber of Commerce provides its members with ample networking opportunities. We host Business After Hours where members can make new contacts and renew old acquaintances. The Chamber is also the place to get the latest economic and business news. (Mark your calendars for the Mayor’s State of the City Address on January 29th). The Chamber advocates on behalf of the business community. Through the leadership of our board of directors and members like you we work to advance issues crucial to our community, business and economic development. Join us on January 22nd for the monthly luncheon and learn about Larkin Hospital’s proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine, a College of Pharmacy (the first in Miami-Dade County), a College of Dentistry (also the first in Miami-Dade County), a College of Biomedical Sciences. Support from Chamber members also allows the Chamber to promote South Dade as a destination through numerous community events. Save the date for the Chamber’s annual Chili Cook-Off and Outhouse Races on February 28th.

Volume 26 Issue 1

The Chamber’s New Year’s resolution is to increase members’ return on investment (ROI) and in that specific regard… Richard Erschik will be conducting a monthly Power-Hour of valuable and useful information at the South Dade Chamber of Commerce office beginning on January 26th. Members and non-members will be invited. Each Power-Hour session will consist of a review and introduction to the FREE Tools that are available from the Chamber exclusively for Chamber members to help them grow their business. So, at this time of year as we count our blessings, remember the gifts of Chamber membership. Here’s to a great 2015. Rosa I Brito, President

Join our team of chamber volunteers. We are looking for volunteers to help with Beer Sales at this year’s Championship Homestead Rodeo January 23-25, 2015. You do not have to be a professional bartender. We need folks to check ID's, work as cashiers, and pour beers as well as serve them.

To volunteer contact the chamber at 305-247-2332.

victim of crime, or are affected by laws and government. So, if one cares about education, quality of life, crime, the environment, the economy, government, or business, then one can work on and influence that issue in the Chamber of Commerce. Those who join the Chamber can, if they are so inclined, do so for entirely self-interested motives without embarrassment for a less than absolute commitment to altruism. The name of the organization has evolved a couple of times over the last century. It could easily have been called the Friends of the Entrepreneurs, the Milton Friedman League, the Deep South Dade Capitalist Club, or the Tropical Free Enterprise Society. Business may not be the community’s soul, but it is its bones, guts, and muscle. The Chamber understands that work is a necessity. And, the Chamber understands that some, very necessary work will not be accomplished unless it is done for free by volunteers. Most work for the benefit of many, as opposed to the benefit of one or a few, cannot be accomplished through paid work. There is too much work and too little money. Money is not generally allocated/distributed/ available to be paid that way. To that extent, money, i.e. Chamber dues, is the easy part – and money is never easy. Some join the Chamber to join in the work not only with their money, but also with their time. Still, membership dues invested in the Chamber provide an organizational structure for hundreds and thousands of volunteer labor hours by the most comprehensive talent pool in our area working for the benefit of our economy. In that sense, the Chamber provides free labor on behalf of nearly everyone’s self-interest. In a purely business sense: Such a deal!

By: David Peyton, President & CEO Why did you join the Chamber? How has the Chamber (being a member) helped you through out the years? 1st National Bank of South Florida joined the Chamber because we were smart and recognized the long-term value of leveraging our investment of dues and time into an organization that also supports our customer’s economic interests, our potential customer’s economic interests, our community’s quality of life, and, therefore, our own interests. The Chamber is neutral turf where even competitors can join in working to preserve and promote our system of free enterprise and personal freedom. Membership in the Chamber has allowed us to collaborate and communicate in ways that would not otherwise be possible with customers, prospective customers, and those who impact those.

What kind of changes have you seen in the area since you joined the Chamber?

The Chamber, which started in 1915, has been around for one hundred years. 1st National Bank of South Florida has been a member of the Chamber since we were founded and established in Homestead in 1932. Since we joined the Chamber our area, like the rest of the world, has grown in population, increased in complexity, weathered storms, faced challenges, overcome adversity, and survived. There are so many, with such frequency, that we find it more profitable to adapt to changes rather than try to keep track of each and all of them.

Continued on next page.

What advice do you give to new business owners? We advise new business owners to bank with 1st National Bank of South Florida. What role does the Chamber have in the community? Here in our area there are many resources that need to be preserved forever and many that have yet to be fully developed. The Chamber is integral to that work. Membership in the Chamber of Commerce is NOT for everyone. It is only for those who either own a business, or work for a business, or patronize a business, or are associated with a school, or own property, or pay any taxes, or may be the 6

So many box stores have moved into the area that creates jobs but takes out small business. Our organization believes in customer service, key to remaining in business since 1942!
