Local eatery, Chefs on the Run, won the Miami New Times Sunday Best Bites on the Beach award for the second year in a row. Just like last year, they were the only restaurant from Homestead to participate in the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. This year, they honored their hometown again, defended their title and brought it back home. Councilman Elvis Maldonado was happy to honor the back-to-back champion.

To receive the honors were Chef Jodrick Ujaque, his wife Jessica Ujaque, and co-owner (and mom) Nelida Estrada.

“I am proud to announce that one of our hometown restaurants, Chefs on the Run, was recently bestowed the Miami New Times ‘Sunday Best Bites on the Beach’ award for the second year in a row!” said Councilman Maldonado during a special presentation at the March 2015 Council Meeting. “They are a pillar in our community and excellent representatives of Downtown Homestead, making constant efforts to honor our city.”

Chefs on the Run won the Best Bites title of 2015 thanks to a returning favorite, their Ahi Tuna Sliders with horseradish remoulade. To accompany the sliders, they served their now award-winning Baby Baguette Bahn Mis with cucumbers and red onions, and Do Chuas with soy lime ginger aioli. To receive the honors were Chef Jodrick Ujaque, his wife Jessica Ujaque, and co-owner (and mom) Nelida Estrada. “Our purpose was not just to go as a family restaurant, but as a community altogether.” Chef Ujaque explained, “We wanted to show people that Homestead is more than just a pit stop, but also a destination. We are proud of our National Parks and our National Parks Trolley. People were impressed with our food, and now that we won again, we were able to leave a mark not only as Chefs on the Run, but as Homestead.” Chefs on the Run opened its doors in September 2011, and has been serving top notch food at their establishment, located at 10 E Mowry Dr. in Downtown Homestead, ever since. For more info, check out their website at www.chefsontheruninhomestead.com

March is Women’s History Month, the perfect time for Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough to honor the Women of the Year for 2015, proud members of the Homestead Women’s Club. Councilwoman Fairclough expressed the importance of acknowledging the valuable community work that these women do voluntarily, and in many occasions, without any type of recognition. Councilwoman Fairclough presented each of these women with a certificate of achievement and a lovely bouquet during March’s Council Meeting Special Presentation. “At the ‘Women of the Year’ luncheon and fashion show, I felt deeply blessed to be in the company of such inspiring women with the heart to serve,” said Councilwoman Fairclough with joy, “I felt compelled to honor their efforts today, in appreciation for all the work they do for the City of Homestead.” The Councilwoman introduced Meda Jensen, member of the Homestead Women’s Club, who called the honorees up to the podium. “Sometimes these women don’t get the recognition they deserve” she explained, “which is why today we give them a small token of appreciation, compared to the large contribution they make, donating their time and tireless dedication to make our community a better place.“ The honored women were: Bonnie King-Moran, Evelyn Ruiz, Joel Ann Shiffer, Lorene Strano, Audelia "Audi" Martinez, June Makis , Charlotte "Charlie" Kimball Hudson, Liz Canavan, Maria C. Garza, Marlene Porter, and there to receive the recognition on behalf of Dorothy Harden, Miss Homestead 2015 Amber Woods.

We currently employ approximately 65 employees and have men that have remained with the company for 39 years. The Travelodge Florida City has held its place as #1 on TripAdvisor for eight years, only to be defeated by its now sister property (Quality Inn Florida City), which was purchased and brought to #1 from #5 since the acquisition, only a few months ago. "We will get our #1 placement back" says Vanessa, one of their Front Desk agents; and it seems that every employee at the Travelodge takes pride in their level of customer service. This must also be the reason why they were the recipient of last year's Franchisee-of-the-Year Award in Customer Service and Hotel Operations from Wyndham Hotels. "The Travelodge Florida City employees are like a family", says Sunny Patel, General Manager of the property. "We help each other achieve our goals and the main goal is customer satisfaction". The Travelodge offers 88 rooms and each room has its own parking space right in front of their door, heated pool, Tiki with plenty of seating area and BBQ grill, Wifi throughout the entire property (best in the industry), hot breakfast buffet with a vast selection of items including cheese omelette, scrambled eggs & hard boiled, bacon or sausage, assorted yogurts, danishes, breads and cereals, pancake and waffle machines and much more. They have negotiated discounts of 10-20% at many local restaurants, including some within walking distance and approximately 90% of the rooms have been beautifully renovated.

Trustees of the Chamber The Chamber Trustees are leaders in our community who recognize that their business success and failure is tied to the area around them. In taking a leadership position, the Trustees are insuring their future success by reinvesting in the local business community through the Greater Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber Trustees voluntarily contribute more than required because they believe in the important programs of the Greater Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce. They understand that the prominence of their organization makes it appropriate for them to assume the role of a substantial participant and contributor to the Chamber’s operation. Members like this refuse to let the burden of improving the business climate and our local quality of life fall on others. Trustee contributions make it possible to maintain the Chamber’s day to day operations with an efficient and professional staff who, in turn, bring more and better programs to the business community.
