From the editor SARAH BLINCO

Remember the 80s track, Sisters Are Doin’ it for Themselves? It’s been playing in my brain throughout the production of this March magazine. While yes, it’s becoming annoying now, it has served as an appropriate theme-song for what we’re celebrating in this issue. That is, our fabulous, fearless, female leaders, managers, entrepreneurs and ‘ideas’ people of the Gold Coast. We’re so lucky now − we have social networking, business coaches, mentors − resources to help us be the best we can be. Now that ‘idea’ is more likely to become a reality than ever before. How exciting! With this in mind, we’re saluting those here who are the epitome of success, in the hope we can all gain a little something from their passionate outlook on life. We had the privilege of liaising with many inspiring women for this issue. All business owners, leaders and that word again − entrepreneurs − of our fair city. We’ve compiled a special spread that showcases what they have to share: their stories, achievements and advice. Hard working, driven; many juggling titles of ‘mum’ and ‘business manager’ − these lovely, local ladies prove motivation, determination, a willingness to learn from others, and I’d suggest, being super organised, go a very long way towards turning what you love into a money-spinner. They demonstrate that ‘entrepreneur’ is more than just a contemporary buzz word or concept, but rather, a dedicated way of being, living and creating. Recently The Huffington Post ran a series of articles emphasising the importance of entrepreneurs to economic growth, reminding readers that it’s because of hard-working, ‘ideas’ people, leaders and innovators, that our economy keeps evolving; jobs and opportunities created. These were great reads, as news is too often negative. This month, we in turn are applauding all local movers and shakers, including the quiet achievers. We hope you’ll pause a moment to cheer them on in their endeavours, but also, that you’ll take inspiration from the stories featured across the coming pages. Whatever your aspiration − professional, personal, spiritual, health - this month we’d like to encourage you to go out there and... you know it... Get it!

FASHIONPROFILE with Missy Robinson

by sacha

SOPHISTICATION Missy Robinson talks with Brisbane designer, Sacha Drake, about the ‘Ultimate Black Dress’, her celebrity supporters and what’s in store for 2013…

You’ve just celebrated 10 years since launching in 2002; what made you decide to start designing? I started designing very young at 14 and was self-employed at 18. I worked in film and TV doing costume design through my midtwenties however felt that this was not what I wanted to be doing long-term so I travelled and then worked in corporate recruitment for a while. In my late twenties, trying to find a way back to channel my creativity I spent time in Melbourne, unsuccessfully looking for a job in fashion. During that time I researched and recognised a gap in the market for dresses for size 12 – 18, so I returned home to Brisbane and started a small party dress range in bright raw silks. This range was picked up by an agent and sold into boutiques. However, they bought the range in size 8 – 12. I realised I had a lot to learn about the trade and then spent the next couple of years doing small collections, selling to Queensland boutiques and learning the trade. I had to keep working a day job. I almost gave up, thinking designing would be a hobby however fate intervened when my then manager made the discovery that her favourite dress, recently worn to a wedding was in fact one of the few silk dresses from my first collection. By that summer of 2002, I found I was selling so much to various independent stores in Queensland, that I never had to go back to work for anyone else. When I invented the ‘Ultimate Black Dress’, which is still very popular now, new doors were opened. To build on my growing reputation for frocks, I created a versatile range of black jersey frocks to complement the cottons and silk and fashion print dresses. Cargo pants and peasant skirts were the key trends at the time and my dresses were fresh and unique. From a business angle, I quickly realised that women will always need dresses and will pay more for a dress than separates. This meant that I would have a label with longevity in the market. I feel very fortunate to have a natural design affinity for dresses. The label focuses on stylish, flattering dresses, and counts the likes of influential Australian women such as Georgie Gardner, Lisa Wilkinson, Natalie Gruzlewski and Shelly Craft as fans; what have been some of your memorable moments? The truly memorable moments are some of my experiences in the fitting room, helping my customer feel and look good. It makes me feel

amazing when one of my customers wears one of my dresses and feels good and likes the look of themselves. Especially the ones who have never owned a dress, and then they leave with three! The Mercedez Benz Fashion Festivals are always a lot of fun, and proud moments for all of my fantastic staff involved in the label. What are your views on Australian sizing and variety in the marketplace? Sizing is very complicated. You can’t govern it. 93 per cent of clothing in Australia is imported, so it’s very difficult to standardise. Our sizing is very consistent and we offer 8 – 18 and this works for us. Pricing is also impossible to govern. The key component is the customer’s perception of value. Is the quality of the garment up to the price tag? If you spend a million bucks on a dress, you hope it makes you look and feel like it! Women need to spend their money only on the clothes that really make them feel great. We’re aware you engage in in-store sessions offering free advice on how to wear different styles – what’s involved with these workshops? The workshops are about responding to our customer’s needs. We touch on a bit of education to help our customer find what styles to wear for her body. We listen to each customer and assist in building the perfect wardrobe for her lifestyle, and we address the needs of time-poor women by hosting shopping style sessions after hours, with a glass of champagne. What trends do you see coming in this year? There’s so many options in fashion at the moment. Some of them working for dresses are paneled, tailored frocks, halter-necks, florals, black and white for spring, 60s shifts. I really just do my own thing and if it works back with the trends then that’s great. What exciting things are in store for you for 2013? The label is celebrating 10 years and I am hoping to continue to design frocks that women love, and grow as a business. For 2013 I hope to meet a whole lot of new customers and introduce the label to them as this always inspires me to keep up the good work. sachadrake.com.au 11

SMART DECISIONS Angela Summerville is a life insurance advisor at LifeWise Wealth Protection, and she explains to Get it why she’s so passionate about her work What’s your aim through your work at LifeWise? To increase public awareness about the importance of having adequate life insurance cover in place, as Australians are predominately very underinsured. As a Breast Cancer survivor, I know first-hand how critical it is to be financially secure so you can concentrate on getting better and not worry about finances. Throughout my journey I met many woman who had the added pressure of suffering financially. Imagine having to work full-time while being treated by chemotherapy as you cannot afford to stay home. I don’t know how they managed as I felt dreadful and would spend the first few days in bed. Imagine having to travel 180 kilometres daily for radiotherapy because you cannot afford to use the private health system. While having radiation therapy I got very tired and the thought of travelling such a distance was appalling. Some people

believe you have to pass away for your family to receive benefits, but there are a variety of options available. For example, depending on your type of cover, you can receive a lump sum if diagnosed with a serious medical condition. What inspires you? Making a difference to people’s lives when they need it most. What are you proud to say your business’ main points of difference are?

BEAUTY AND BUSINESS Managing Director of Skin 02 and Alive Clinics, Alison Atia, shares with Get it some ‘beautiful’ secrets to success Any key rituals you try to include every day? I always do my daily facial rituals, morning and evening, using Skin O2 daily cosmedical skincare and make-up to cleanse, exfoliate, balance, treat and protect my skin; plus daily mummy cuddles with my precious and very cute Atia boys (and my and labradoodles)! Why are these important to you? It’s all about feeling good about yourself and then sharing the love − this way I can always face the day with a smile. What inspires you? Helping people learn the truth about good skincare and make-up and seeing joy when they discover visible results. What are you proud to say your business’ main points of difference are? We are an Australian, Gold Coast based family business, so every product we make is what we use on ourselves or our children. For us it is a lifestyle choice. Every single ingredient needs to be of the highest quality, potency (to be most clinically effective) but always non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic, free from pore clogging or irritating chemicals and perfumes found in lots of other cosmetics. There’s absolutely no animal testing, we use 99 per cent organic ingredients and eco-friendly packaging. March 2013

What influence do you have over how your brand is represented? I am lucky because I get to have huge input − along with our dynamic team of expert skin lovers at Skin O2 HQ − into getting our brand message across. Also to educate our aesthetic industry and future generations about skincare anti-aging myths, what ingredients really work to get clinical results and what marketing hype to avoid. How important is it to be an ‘influencer’ in your industry? It is very important because there are so many multi-national cosmetic companies who through huge advertising budgets influence 16

It’s the little things we do that make a difference. As a boutique family business we understand the importance of customer service and encourage face-toface meetings so we can really get to know and listen to our clients. We have access to a wide range of insurance providers to offer cost-effective and strategic solutions through the development of an affordable and relevant protection plan. Our ongoing service includes annual insurance reviews to ensure cover is upto-date, and most importantly when a client needs to lodge a claim we provide guidance in the comfort of your home. Which of your personality traits do you think has made you so successful at what you do? Bubbly personality, motivation to achieve, and being passionate about people. I also ensure I have plenty of ‘Ange’ time, as its important to me to achieve work/life balance, knowing life can change in an instant. What’s the best advice a mentor gave you? Remember the past, plan for the future, but live for today, because yesterday is gone and tomorrow may never come. lifewisewp.com.au the market into skincare choices that are often not for the benefit of the consumer, or endline patients who use the products hoping to live the dream of the advert, but then end up with sensitive or irritated skin. Thousands of patients around Australia would come and see Dr Atia and myself at Alive Clinics on the Gold Coast about their acne skin problems and antiaging concerns and we originally just made prescriptive products for individual patients. We soon found word had spread and we became inundated with patients, doctors and skin specialists from across Australia demanding the rapid growth of our brand. Secondly, I believe it’s absolutely not necessary to cruelly test cosmetics on animals or use bad grade packaging or production methods that are damaging and very unfriendly to our environment. I adore how our Skin O2 customers appreciate our make-up refills which are both better for the budget and a more ecofriendly way to shop. What’s the best advice a mentor gave you? That the most successful people are the ones that bounce back the most when they get knocked down. Also, “never lose your love and passion” − personal advice from Hugh Hefner! What’s new for 2013? We are excited to represent the Gold Coast overseas, both in Asia and Dubai, and share the passion of our quality Australian cosmedical skincare, and fresh new attitude when it comes to providing a better choice in daily makeup and skincare for both him and her – yes, ‘him’! A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND Kelly Warne is the dedicated Brand and Marketing Manager of LeGassick, and she shares a few insights into the highlights of her enviable job... What do you love about working with LeGassick? After a successful 20 years, LeGassick were ready to take the brand to the next level to attract new clients. I am the first, full-time Brand and Marketing Manager for LeGassick and I love the challenges that brings. Everything is new and in many ways, a risk. When all the ideas come together to create a beautiful campaign, it’s so very rewarding. I love the freedom I have in my job to be creative and of course, to work with the some of the world’s most beautiful diamonds. What inspires you? I am inspired by the world of fashion. The designers sketch, textures in materials, the way photos and text can come together on the pages of a magazine to create a sense of desire in the reader; it’s a beautiful thing. I spend hours on fashion blogs to find images of inspiration, colours and textures that make me feel intrigued. I take inspiration from them

Kelly Warne in building campaigns for LeGassick. What are you proud to say LeGassick’s main points of difference are? I’m proud that LeGassick is a business that isn’t afraid to take risks and to try something new. The brand is innovative and eagerly adopts new ideas. But with the new, LeGassick hasn’t forgotten what matters most to our clients; quality pieces and genuine service. I love receiving emails from our clients who are writing to simply say ‘thank you’, it’s very rewarding. What influence do you have over how

17 LeGassick Get It Mag Half Page.indd 1

your brand is represented? I’m very lucky to be the main influence and driver of the LeGassick brand. Everything you can see, from online to advertising, window displays to staff uniforms, is my department. To influence how clients view the brand, a luxury brand, is exciting. I love to read all the posts from client on the LeGassick Facebook page. How the public see the brand is right there in black and white. From 20-year clients, to young women who desire to one day have a LeGassick engagement ring. What’s the best advice a mentor gave you? The best advice I’ve been told is that, no matter the pressure or deadline, if I’m not 100 per cent happy with it, don’t send it out. When there’s so much time and money invested, I simply won’t sign off on anything I don’t love. I’d rather take the time to send it back, make changes or review it one more time to know that when it is released, it’s perfect. What advice would you pass on to those in pursuit of a career dream? Take the time to think about what you really love, then do your research on how to do it for work. I’ve always loved luxury brands and creative arts but I stayed in unfulfilling jobs simply for security of an income. When I wrote down what I loved, it was easy to pursue a role that would make me happy to go to work every day. Brand and Marketing Manager for LeGassick really is my dream job! legassick.com.au

peop

SUCCESSFUL Do you have designs on a higher profile in 2013? Dallas McMillan investigates tactics you can utilise − today − to become more influential, no matter what field you work in

e can all recall people, experiences, books and ideas which have changed our life. What motivates you, your dreams, and your passion? What have been your key ‘influencers’? I bet you can trace back to an inspirational person (family, friend, coach, business mentor), or a great book you read, an experience you had − positive or negative. I’m sure those entrepreneurs, managers and leaders among you have also been motivated by amazing business-women, such as Australian of the Year, Ita Buttrose. In such instances, we’re inspired ‘from a distance’; someone like Ita might have inspired through business, charitable or even political endeavours − hence, has created a positive effect (even from afar) by way of ‘influence’. Not only can a figure like Ita generate positive change around her, but a ‘high-profile’ works in other ways too. It leads to business success, enhanced opportunities to learn, travel and grow. Evidently, in many cases, such ‘influencers’ are rich, well-known or even celebrities. It may seem like this sort of influence is difficult to replicate if you are none of the above. Not everyone can be an editor for Women’s Weekly, or appear on Sunrise (although, there’s no harm in trying), however times are rapidly changing. The good news is social media and the Internet have offered us all not only the opportunity to be online publishers or TV moguls, but the chance to create an influential space around us within any given field. With the right strategies, skills and attitude, you can become recognised as a leader in your own area of expertise, and enjoy the benefits this brings. Why not try some of these strategies this month? 1 Find a mentor, be a mentor It is difficult to move from being unskilled or unsuccessful at something, to thriving and appearing as an ‘expert’, unless you have a role March 2013

model. Witnessing a model of what ‘successful people’ do, how they think, who they connect with and what they focus on can fast-track your own success. Find a mentor who has already achieved your goals, and learn from them. You will get even more out of having a mentor if you are also mentoring other people who want to learn more about the skills or success you have. Make time to help and support someone who is where you were a year or two ago: an added benefit is that the way to master anything is to teach it. Helping someone else learn will accelerate your own growth. 2 Do the work Successful people do the work. We all have great ideas (remember how you were going to create a social network just like Facebook, but Mark Zuckerberg took your idea?). The difference is the most successful people focus on one idea at a time, work hard at it and follow through. 3 Believe in yourself and your vision In order to succeed in anything worthwhile, we need to face adversity and challenge. The people who persevere can do so because they believe in what they do, and have the ability to sell others on it! If you want to succeed you need to believe passionately in what you do so others are drawn to share your vision. Choosing the right project to commit to is a big part of making this possible. Additionally, if you don’t consider yourself strong in the areas of ‘self promotion’ or ‘selling ideas’, research relevant courses or coaches in your area who can assist you to confidently develop such skills. 4 Surround yourself with successful people Take a good look around the business/ organisational/company landscape near you. Soon enough you’ll notice a trend; that is, 18

the most successful people you know hang out with other successful people − both in business and personal time. You can kickstart this by networking with some of the top people in your field. Again, social media makes it easier than ever before to connect with other successful people, to share ideas and discover new opportunities. If you haven’t already, start by creating/updating a profile on LinkedIn, follow groups, companies and people relevant to you, and commence interacting. Don’t stop at online social media though – a lot of the biggest opportunities come from real-life meetings. Look out for opportunities to network with people in your industry, at local Chamber of Commerce or business networking lunches, and with prospective clients or business partners.

5 Using social networks and the Internet to research, learn and become ‘better at your passion’ The internet means we have a wealth of information available at our fingertips, however, as you may have already identified, often there’s so much detail that it is overwhelming. In fact, we need experts more than ever to help us interpret and navigate. Learn to use tools like search engines, alerts, social media and productivity APPs to master your time and area of expertise, so you’re picking up only the relevant information that teaches and benefits you. Similarly, utilising available tools effectively means you can also share your passion and experience faster than has previously been possible. Share knowledge with friends and colleagues in an authentic, enthusiastic and helpful way, and you will steadily build a reputation as the go-to person for ‘your thing’. There’s a wealth of free and fun ways to train in many new areas, and you don’t have to be rich to keep learning. Invest time in webinars, join mailings lists, read blogs and online media

Hot Tips

using social efficiently to become ‘influential’

ple

> Review your online profiles – make sure they send the right message; encourage people to connect with you > A professional and appealing photograph on social network profiles and your website helps people put a face to the name and build trust > Follow and connect with the top people in your industry; ‘like’ and interact on social media, their blogs and so on > Become a publisher. Choose a platform such as a website, blog, e-book, videos and so on. Use your own content on a blog/website, and build an audience through use of social media > Take your online relationships to the real world – organise a gettogether of people who share your passion > Be a leader. Set-up a community, help out a charity, educate a group of business owners or students about your passion and area of expertise

from around the world. If time management is an issue, experts recommend ‘scheduling’ time for online each day. For example, for strictly an hour from 9am, then again from 4pm (or however you decide to pencil this ‘online personal development time’ into your week). Over time you will develop your own take on things – especially if you target a specific area that you love and people need. 6 Become influential in your industry – build yourself a platform As your expertise increases, you can leverage by publishing a blog or website and being active on social networks. Your unique take on things – your ‘voice’ and face have something to contribute. Share your ideas, help people and build a network via your favourite publishing platform(s). Choices you may consider include: • Starting a YouTube channel, Pinterest board or sharing presentations on Slideshare. • Creating a website or blog using Wordpress, Blogger or Tumblr. • Expanding your reach via social networks

like Facebook, Twitter or Google+. • Showcasing your portfolio on your own website or a social media platform designed for this purpose. Sharing ideas on a blog, website or through social media channels helps you ‘become’ influential and be perceived as an ‘expert’, rather than as a ‘know-it-all’. Use social media and networking to expand your reach, connect with people in your market and to build visibility and credibility. Many people make the mistake of trying to ‘sell’ products or services to people via social media, but I liken social media more to a party or networking event, not a sales meeting. No-one likes a pushy sales person at a party! You’re much better off forging friendly connections, telling interesting stories, sharing helpful facts, listening and learning about people, and telling them about what you do. 7 THE SECRET They say, the real secret of success is helping other people – start doing that now, consistently, and you won’t need to go after success – it will find you! 19

> Build deeper relationships. Commit to calling three people in your network to follow-up, catch-up or offer assistance. You will make a great impression. > Do what you love. What have you been missing, or been meaning to do? Start it now.

LOSE WEIGHT and change your life Janet Hughes shares her Kudos success story with Get it

became a member and completed a 12week fitness and weight-loss challenge at the beautiful Kudos Health Club on the Gold Coast. At 55-years-of-age, I was overweight with at least 10-kilos to lose, and my fitness level was slightly above couch-potato status, so both were in desperate need of attention. I blamed my protruding belly, tuckshop lady arms and thunder thighs on age, menopause and any other excuse I could muster! The truth of course was a self-inflicted increase in both my food intake and sedentary life over the past 20 years. The 12-week challenge was lifechanging for me. I lost almost 9-kilos, can now run 10-kilometres and have changed my body shape. There’s still work to be done, but I feel fantastic. I had a consultation with the club nutritionist and then I set-up a diet plan where I could choose to eat whatever I liked – provided once I hit my daily allowance,

that was it. I discovered that calorie counting both my food intake and exercise output and sticking to a target really works. More importantly, I discovered I could alter my body shape with exercise and weights. My weekends now start early with Saturday morning bootcamp, followed by a

water workout in the heated pool. Recently after the classes, I stopped to grab a coffee. The happy smiling face behind the counter looked up at me like a best friend and said, “That was a tough bootcamp this morning wasn’t it?” As he made my long black with a dash of milk (lattes are a thing of the past) he introduced me to another two fellows in the shop, who had also done bootcamp. It was instantly like being surrounded by friends, all with the common bond of health and fitness. The conversation was happy and easy, we chatted about the class and the gym and I mentioned that I had just done the 12-week Kudos challenge and was now 10-kilos lighter. As I walked out of the shop one of the boys said casually,“And you look good for it!” It wasn’t flirtatious or gratuitous − it was like a good friend offering unsolicited support − and I had only known these people for 5 minutes! I smiled as I got into my car, feeling absolutely fantastic after some hard exercise and unexpected encouragement from new friends to keep at it.

REAL LIFE with Marina Thomas

Racing in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race onboard the winning Gold Coast Australia boat in 2011-12 changed the lives of all the amateur sailors onboard. Marina Thomas meets emergencynurse and grandmother, Deb Miller, who was part of that crew, and discovers adventure may always be on the horizon, if you’re brave enough to pursue it. t was when she was writing her adventurous father’s eulogy that Surfers Paradise resident, Deb Miller, realised she was living in an absolute rut. Deb had been pounding away on the corporate hamster wheel working two jobs and doing 70+ hour weeks to escape a marriage that was on the rocks. The mother of two realised something had to change. She discovered the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race a year later through an encouraging friend who was participating, and saw that anyone could take part regardless of age or experience. Deb, aged in her forties, decided to set aside work, friends, family, and do something just for her for the first time. She had only ever sailed once but her late father’s love of the sea and boating inspired her to start a journey in memory of him as well. Deb’s marriage had also ended – her sons thought she was having a midlife crisis but supported her quest for a new challenge. Deb was able to take extended leave from her Queensland Health role as Director of Health Systems and Clinical Innovation and applied for the race in February 2011. A few months later, she joined the 30 odd other Australians onboard Gold Coast Australia in the fleet of 10 yachts competing in the 40,000 mile ocean odyssey. The groups of strangers ranged from bankers to farmers, midwives, lawyers and chefs from around the globe. Many others had also never sailed before prior to four weeks’ compulsory training. The Clipper Race is the world’s longest and toughest yacht race and competitive Australian skippers and boats have won the last two contests with a high Antipodean crew contingent. Over 11 months, there are 15 different races over eight separate legs visiting 13 countries where crews can travel and sightsee during stopovers. Deb endured frightening weather patterns and freezing conditions, four-hour watch rotations, toilets with no doors, no showers and basic food as well as three major incidents onboard where her nursing and communication skills were tested. However, she says taking part has been one of the best life decisions she has ever made. “The experience I have had, what I have learnt March 2013

INSPIRATION AND

about myself and others when they are placed in such extreme circumstances is something that will influence me in my life ahead and the pathway that I’ll now take. The experience was about really discovering who I am – I found ‘me’ over that year. I discovered my inner strength and it gave me an opportunity to reflect on how I want to spend my next 30 years. The race gave me a renewed respect for the beautiful oceans, sea-life, wildlife and environment that we are connected with.” Deb was only originally due to do legs five and six from the Gold Coast to Singapore through the East China Sea and then to Qindgao, China and through the Pacific to San Francisco. However, after completing the two highly challenging legs among a close and competitive Gold Coast crew, a fire was ignited in her belly for more adventure and she ended up spending seven months at sea. She enthuses that highlights include racing down a monstrous wave in the Pacific engulfed in a tube of water reaching speeds up to 27 knots. And she recalls sitting on the rail under a full moon with thousands of stars sparkling in the night sky and the waves glowing with phosphorescence as they hit the side of the boat and splashed up over her. “It was like a 30

scene out of the movie Avatar,” she adds. Deb helped Gold Coast win the epic marathon in July 2012 after securing a place on the last leg across the North Atlantic from Canada back to the UK. “This was the leg where I really pushed through any previous apprehensions and really got out of my comfort zone and enjoyed being on the bow being thrashed as we did sail changes in the North Atlantic.” One particularly frightening and memorable time came when Deb was washed down the side of the boat and left hanging by her safety line. Sunshine Coast crew member, Lisa Blair, came to her rescue and she was able to move through the fear and really get a kick out of pushing herself. “I always knew I had capacity to respond well to challenges, but the Pacific tested me physically, mentally and emotionally in ways I had never imagined. It was very tough, but new lifetime friendships were forged in that leg.” Despite the harsh and sometimes dangerous conditions, Deb realised an inner peace. “Before getting on the boat, I rarely remembered my dreams – if in fact I had any. On the boat my dreams were vivid, colourful

and alive. I can still hear and miss the sound of the water slapping against the side of the hull and the movement of the boat slicing into the waves as I drift off to sleep.” Now after six months back home and at work in Queensland, Deb is determined to keep a better career/life balance. She regularly sails around the Gold Coast and is planning trips to Europe to reunite with other Clipper crew members. She counts the achievement of winning the race as one of the biggest accomplishments of her life and says she is doing things she never would have done in the past. “I am no longer prepared to compromise and will pursue my goals now with renewed energy and enthusiasm without the fear of failure. I feel that given what I have been through and achieved – I can literally do anything.” This year, more than 50 Australians will compete in the race. For details on how you can join them, visit clipperroundtheworld.com

WELLBEING

MORE THAN JUST Y

our mouth is more than just a pretty smile. It’s also a gateway to overall health, and keeping that gateway clean may keep you healthier longer. The health of your mouth affects your whole body. Simple habits like daily brushing and flossing are more important than you might think. To appreciate how the mouth can affect the body, it helps to understand what can go wrong in the first place. Bacteria that builds up on teeth makes gums prone to infection. The immune system moves in to attack the infection and the gums become inflamed. The inflammation continues unless the infection is brought under control. Over time, inflammation and the chemicals it releases eat away at the gums and bone structure that hold teeth in place. The result is severe gum disease, known as periodontitis. Inflammation can also cause problems in the rest of the body. Cavities and gum disease may contribute to many serious conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases, premature and low weight babies and untreated cavities can also be painful and lead to serious infections. Maintaining good oral health includes keeping teeth free from cavities and preventing gum disease. Poor oral health can affect your appearance

and self-esteem, and has been linked to sleeping problems, as well as behavioural and developmental problems in children. Your ability to chew and digest food properly can also be affected. O’REILLY’S RAINFOREST RETREAT 36

Flame Hill, Sunshine Coast Flame Hill Vineyard and Restaurant (flamehill.com.au) is a gorgeous destination on the Sunshine Coast, set within the Hinterland, amongst other wineries of Montville. It’s an interesting, family-owned

property, boasting vines over 60 years old. Group wine tastings are a real treat, and a terrific opportunity to learn more about the wine production process. Added to this, Flame Hill is also home to some delightful Charcuterie and Regional Cheeses, and the expert team here will ensure you’re tasting the appropriate wine/cheese combinations to make the most of every possible flavour experience. Make a day of the excursion while on your Sunshine Coast break away, and explore the Hinterland wineries with a group of friends (although ensure you designate a driver early). Wild Soul Winery, Granite Belt Have you ever considered exploring Australia’s up-and-coming wine region, located just a few hours’ drive from the Gold Coast? There are over 48 boutique wineries as well as an abundance of fresh produce and gourmet foods available to experience in the Granite Belt region (granitebeltwinecountry.com.au). This area is producing some extraordinarily popular wines these days, and a quaint stop for tourists is Wild Soul Winery (wildsoul.netfirms.com). Wild Soul offers the ultimate foray into a world of organic wines without the meddling of humans or machines.

LOCAL DINING with Missy Robinson

IN LOVE WITH ocated in the bustling metropolis that is Chevron Island, with a newly landscaped frontage and under new management, is Lime on Chevron. Renowned for its comfortable location, and diners ranging from ‘shoppers to corporates’, Lime on Chevron is an iconic brand of the Gold Coast; locals love it, and the venue is consistently a hive of activity. The food is fresh, healthy and caters for vegetarians and gluten-free diners. The talented Italian chefs hand-make all condiments on site and proudly utilise locally-sourced produce. Sadly we had less than an hour to indulge for lunch, so we opted for a quick mix − Salt & Pepper Calamari with Roast Curry Aioli; Shaved prosciutto, bocconcini, rocket and truffle oil pizza, and Tandoori chicken, spinach, cashews, pumpkin in coriander yoghurt dressing. The entire spread was delicious and highly recommended, but I have to admit my favourite taste sensation of the day was the incredible roast curry aioli, unexpected and to-die-for! Weekly fish, steak, pasta and pizza chef’s specials on offer. Open for dinner Friday and Saturday 7 days breakfast and lunch facebook.com/Lime-On-Chevron

LAST WORD with Sarah Blinco

This month we’re talking inspiring and influential, and evidently there’s few who do this better than J.Lo I remember when Jennifer Lopez became ‘famous’ the first time around. She was likable on film, (re)branded as J.Lo, and released some cool dance tracks we used to rave the night away to ‘back in the day’; then she disappeared into the sunset with third hubby, Mark Anthony, for a while. Ten years on (from my raving days, that is) J.Lo ‘returned’. I believe she even references the likes of me, and ‘new me’ in her song, On the Floor (2011), “It’s a new generation of party people”. Now, seemingly at the height of her fame, the singer/actress/dancer we knew as ‘Jenny from the Block’, rockets to the top of the 2012 Forbes Celebrity 100 power list, and ranked #38 in the magazine’s international Power Women list, #10 TV/Radio, #13 in web influence. The break that set this lucrative reincarnation about was her appointment as judge on mate, Simon Cowell’s, American Idol in 2010. In the two years since, she’s undergone great personal change (divorce, becoming a single-mum), scored profitable endorsement deals with brands like L’Oreal and Gillette, has continued to release popular fragrances under the Coty umbrella, recorded more chart-topping singles, designed fashion ranges, toured the world ... and somewhere in between found time to mentor on Idol. Being influential, setting trends − the 43-yearold (really?) is an example of publicity in its most successful form. Whether you perceive J.Lo as an example of a successful personality, brand or simply as a famous person, there’s no arguing she is in an influential position − 6.6 million followers on Twitter, and 12 million fans on Facebook, copious sales on J.Lo branded goods, and let’s not forget Idol ratings: that’s a wide reach. Sure, there’s been plenty of press regarding

her marriages, booty and occasional alleged diva behaviour, but it’s all lead to a nice place, I’d say − $52M in earnings in 2012 and the title of most powerful entertainer on the planet (for the timebeing, at least). It used to be enough to do one thing really well − bat a ball, strum an instrument, sing, act, design. Now to be considered a true success you need to firmly position that ‘entrepreneur’ hat, think ‘outside the square’ and design a wide range of complementary branded services and products that will have you noticed from “Brazil, Morocco, London to Ibiza, straight to LA, New York, Vegas to Africa”. Actress, musician, personality, philanthropist, as far as saluting successful women, we have to give some credit to J.Lo. She’s a branding power machine that perhaps we could all look to for a little entrepreneurial inspiration. The rest of us may not have made $52M last year, however may I suggest a few success lessons we could take from Ms Lopez (and her ‘team’)... > Be friends with other influencers > Surround yourself with a team of great people, including confidants, mentors, and experts in areas you’re not strong in (eg. book-keeping, social media, Public Relations etc.) > Dress to impress > Offer a varied range of products or services, but ensure branding is clear and interconnected > Be a leader (ideas, positive behaviour), not a follower > Consider how you could use your influence for good > Don’t be afraid to promote your achievements (no one is going to‘PR you’if you don’t try to‘PR’yourself) > Be real, be yourself > Take a chance on new things; adapt and diversify
