JUNE 2022

A trip of a lifetime The 2006 Girls Collingwood Canadian Soccer Team realized a three-year dream come true this past April when the soccer ball dropped in Agropoli, Italy. Planning and fundraising began in May 2019 but halted with many tears and disbelief due to the onset of COVID. However, a group of 17 committed and determined girls, led by Coach Holly Willamson-Hynes and Manager Julie Carter, continued the bond and persevered through the weathered storm of COVID and kept 'girls in sport - soccer' motivated to keep their dream alive. Team bonding events and zoom training played an essential role in keeping the players grounded, focused and driven during the hard times.

From start to finish, the trip was led by Issie Seminara of Wasaga Beach, who has facilitated the international experience for several local teams for over 20 years. The trip included visits to St. Peter's Basilica at Vatican City, the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the famous ruins of Pompeii, the Temples of Paestum, as well as the scenic towns along the Amalfi Coast and the Isle of Capri. In Agropoli, the Canadian soccer team and parents were warmly welcomed by locals and teams from across Italy, Slovakia, and Poland. A dynamic opening ceremony and a joint exhibition game with Poland were great networking cultural experiences with their peers, who became fast friends on Instagram, sharing photos and learning to communicate despite their language barriers. Despite not playing competitively since 2020, the girls started slowly at the beginning of the competition, which was challenging with some small losses. However, determined and realizing they lost to teams that only had a brief competitive pause during COVID, the team rallied and showed true perseverance and progressed over the four days, which was exhibited with fortitude in the final game with a tie 1-1 against Poland. This trip gave them an opportunity to grow in the sport and see and learn how soccer is played around the world and experience the culture and history of Italy that will leave them with a lifetime of memories. This year was even more poignant, with the team able to see their committed hard work come together and start to realize and believe in normality once again worldwide. The trip was truly a success for the community with the tremendous support from sponsors and partners who worked alongside the team to facilitate practices, uniforms and funds to make the trip achievable. A special thanks to Play it Again Sports (The Uniform Factory), the Collingwood YMCA, Men with Knives Catering / The Larder, Parkway Yamaha, The Co-operators – WD Redick and Associates, Fawcett Funeral Homes, Collingwood Food Tours, Labyrinth Services Inc, Nature's Tree Service, United Roofing and Exteriors, Tyrolean Village, Anytime Fitness and Active Life Conditioning. A special thank you goes out to Assistant Coaches Danielle Markic and Shaun Lewis, First Touch Soccer Coach Kathy Bourbonnais and Trainers Tara Hunt and Claire Fenton for their help. Safe rooms for patients

We are a skin and health clinic focused on helping you feel radiant, starting from within. Our treatments include: customized facials, skin peels, microdermabrasion, dermapen, dermaplaning, radio frequency, and certified health coaching.

Collingwood General and Marine Hospital has partnered with South Georgian Bay artists for an Emergency Department safe room project. Focused on creating enhanced therapeutic spaces for mental health patients arriving at CGMH's emergency department (ED), the safe room mural project was established.

Mention this ad at time of booking to receive 15% off.

The hospital’s ED houses two safe rooms for patients experiencing a mental health crisis. In an effort to improve the experience for patients using the space, the two rooms have undergone a transformation. Two local artists were selected after a public call out for submissions and each of the rooms has been updated with murals which depict a more calming environment, contributing to feelings of safety and self-regulation. “I applaud the members of CGMH’s mental health department for implementing this significant project,” says artist Susanna Lamy. “It was an absolute pleasure to be a part of and I hope the resulting murals will bring a level of comfort to CGMH patients.” “People in trying times look to art to find inspiration, peace, and reflection,” says artist Taylor Wensley. “Thank you to the Giving Circle and CGMH team members who recognize the magic of art and made this important project possible.” The project was graciously supported by the CGMH Foundations’ Giving Circle, an inclusive group of like-minded women in support of the CGMH Foundation. Their focus is to fund innovative or exceptional needs that are above and beyond the Hospital's capital budget. The Giving Circle was proud to provide funding for this important project, which will profoundly impact mental health patients at CGMH. “The needs of mental health patients are specific and may vary depending on diagnosis and reason for a visit to the Emergency Department safe rooms. Patients may arrive at the emergency department in a mental health crisis experiencing self-harming behaviour and/or suicidal ideation, aggressive and/or violent behaviour, and risk of elopement. It is important the physical and therapeutic environment of the safe rooms contributes to feelings of safety and self-regulation,” says Crystal Bell, manager of Mental Health Services, Interim Rehabilitation manager, Spiritual Care and Hemodialysis, who was very pleased with how this project turned out. BUSINESS PROFILE:

THE FUTURE OF POWER IS FUEL-FREE HYBRID POWER SOLUTIONS All Hybrid Power Solutions products are designed, developed and proudly assembled in Canada, using the safest battery technology available on the market. Most systems have a payback period of 8-12 years. “Not bad when you consider most systems are designed to last 20+ years,” explains Francois. The company also offers smaller, portable power packs perfect for RVs, boats and cabins. Now, Hybrid Power Solutions is taking it one step further, launching its franchise network and rolling out warranty-backed solar system installation services from coast to coast. “The current market is filled with small players using different products with varying degrees of quality and service,” shares Francois. “We saw an opportunity to streamline the process and offer an end-to-end service that customers can trust.” Is there anything better than sitting on a dock during the summer, looking out over the lake with a cold drink in hand? With the wind in your hair and the sun on your face, your day-to-day worries can feel like they are a million miles away. The last thing you want to stress about is access to reliable electricity.

With Canada’s growing clean tech industry and incredible advancements in battery technology, finding an efficient, green power solution has never been easier. “When people are out on the lake or at the cottage, they want to enjoy the peace and quiet,” says Francois. “That’s what we offer. Clean, reliable electricity, wherever and whenever you need it.”

Francois Byrne, the brains behind Toronto-based company Hybrid Power Solutions, has spent years developing and perfecting backup power and replacement solar power systems for off-grid or net-metered homes and cottages.

“We believe that access to clean, reliable energy should be easy and affordable,” says Francois. “Our systems require no fuel and no maintenance. You simply wire it in your home and let it do its thing!”

Trees for the future The Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) hosted a tree planting session with grade seven students of St.Noel Chabanal Catholic School in Wasaga Beach on May 10th. After a brief training session, the students were eager to grab their shovels and get planting. Teachers were very impressed with the efficient ways in which their students planted the seedling trees, which will grow big and tall on the south side of Carly Patterson Trail for many years to come.

ALL ANIMALS ARE DESERVING OF LOVE!

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner The Kind and Great Looking People of Collingwood “I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers.” - Blanche, A Streetcar Named Desire

Meet Two Long Term GTHS Dog Residents:

My lovely and talented wife Pam used to ride horses in her youth. And while she may have had fun back then, her luck with rides didn’t extend from four legs to four wheels. If our vehicle is going to run out of gas, suffer a flat tire, get a chipped windshield, have the battery die, or just inexplicably turn off, poor Pam is always the one at the wheel. The horse whisperer has turned into the car screamer. The other day while Pam was stopped in the pouring rain at a busy Collingwood intersection, the car just shut down, wouldn’t restart, and a strange smell filled the air. So, who does she call first? Cousin Louie, of course. Cousin Louie is our “go-to guy” for pretty much everything in life. Home and auto repairs, appliances, furniture, clothes, cigars, sporting goods, weather forecasts, travel tips, career questions, mid-life crises, and meaning of life answers. Louie pretty much knows it all; he’s at the top of the mountain. Of course, Pam wouldn’t call me first. What could I possibly do to help? It’s well established that I come from a long line of completely useless men. Anyway, even if she did call me, I’d just tell her to call my cousin instead. Pam and I didn’t sign a pre-nuptial agreement when we got married, but if we did, the first sentence would have been, “Both parties hereby agree that Cousin Louie must be consulted on virtually every life decision we make.” So, at that Collingwood intersection, Louie tells Pam that the problem is concerning, and she better call a tow truck. Our car manufacturer has its own self-heralded Roadside Assist program. However, every time Pam calls, it’s a disaster. Dropped calls, poor customer service, hours of waiting time. We think its real name is Roadside Torture, but something got lost in translation from German to English.

Sweet senior girl BRANDY and handsome boy Piper, have each been waiting for their special someone since February! Brandy is a happy, laid-back but active senior and truly an absolute sweetheart. She is looking for a comfy, cozy home to live out her golden years and hopes to spend her days going on walks and getting lots of pets and scratches!

PIPER is a mega handsome boy with a great temperament and is a hound dog through and through! He’s got an exceptional sniffer and enjoys nothing more than using it while outside or on walks. Piper is looking for a hound loving family who can provide some extra time, patience and understanding as he continues his obedience work and learning about “indoor, pet dog” life!

Looking for your new best friend?

The GTHS Animal Centre is open for walk-in adoptions Monday–Friday from 1–4pm at 549 Tenth Line in Collingwood, ON. Visit www.gths.ca to learn more about Brandy and Piper and other adoptable cats and dogs.

When she finally made it back home, Pam relayed the details of the day to our daughter and me. “Everyone was so awesome. While I was waiting for the tow, with my hazards on, a good-looking guy in a pick-up truck across the street stopped and asked if I needed help. I said no, thank you, I was fine.”

BRICK HOUSE HOME INSPECTION SERVICES IS A SUPPORTER OF THE GEORGIAN TRIANGLE HUMANE SOCIETY AND A PROUD GTHS PET PARTNER.

Good-looking guy? I raised one eyebrow and looked at our daughter. “Then, another car pulls in behind me, and a nice-looking older man gets out and offers to try to give the car a boost.” Nice-looking older man? Two raised eyebrows from me and a look of concern on our daughter’s face. “And, during the whole time I was waiting, a woman kept coming out of her house, checking to see if I needed anything and offering to let me wait inside with her.” Phew, finally a woman. What did she look like? “She was very nice, but I don’t really remember what she looked like.” You don’t remember? Our daughter can’t bear to make eye contact with me. “Anyway, then a police car pulls up, and this really hot looking young cop comes out and says he will wait behind my car until the tow truck comes.” Hot looking young cop? Our daughter has her face buried deep into her laptop by this point, but I can see my grey hair and tired eyes in the reflection from her screen. “And when the tow truck finally arrived, the driver was such a sweet man, and he offered to drop me off at home on the way to take the car to the dealership. He was one of those classic, old-fashioned, rugged, capable men.” Rugged and capable? Oh really? My mind is racing, and I’m trying to think of the right thing to say, something about how all this genuine kindness from nice Collingwood people restored our faith in humanity during these trying times. But instead, all that I manage to blurt out is, “oh yeah, well, I think Cousin Louie is better looking than all those guys put together!” Pam gives me that sweet, surprised, “oh, you’re jealous” look, and my daughter texts me one of those embarrassed “hand to face” emojis. Whatever. I know in my heart that I made my long line of useless male ancestors proud. Submitted by: Ted C. Yoannou, B.A., LL.B. How I learned to love the houseless I only reluctantly began photographing people experiencing homelessness. When I was fifteen, my mentor, the National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore, told me that my strength lay in portraiture. At first, I began photographing the elderly in nursing homes. However, as I needed written consent from their children, this soon became impractical. Then my dad showed me the work of the British photographer, Lee Jeffries. He is famous for his photographs of the houseless. “Why don’t you photograph them?” he asked me. Within a week, I was in Toronto doing exactly that. That was six years ago. Since then, I have photographed hundreds of people experiencing homelessness in several major cities worldwide. I have also had four books published with my photographs and stories of these people. Although admittedly, I began photographing these people for purely artistic reasons, I have since learned to love them - in the sense of desiring their good. Despite being poor in material possessions, the houseless are often rich in moral virtues, such as humility, gratitude and unpretentiousness. However, the moral virtue that they possess most strongly, I think, is fortitude, “courage in pain or adversity. Melissa is a case in point. She ended up on the streets of Toronto last January when she, and the other tenants of the apartment building where they were living in Orangeville, were illegally evicted on Christmas day. Unable to find another place to rent because of COVID, Melissa parked herself, along with her dog Tinkerbell, on a heating grate at the corner of Queen St. and Victoria St., in Toronto. Or consider Lynn. When we met her, she was sleeping on a heating grate in front of Toronto’s Old City Hall. Once, her ex-boyfriend knocked out her front teeth and set her on fire. Most recently, she’d been kicked in the face by a stranger. The last thing Lynn said to me was, “It was nice meeting you, Leah. You are like a sister or good friend I never had!” Is it any wonder that I enjoy the company of the unhoused so much - even more than I enjoy the company of those who are housed? They are wonderful people. It’s too bad that most people just ignore them. SUBMITTED BY: LEAH DEN BOK

Bringing PLAY back to life Theatre Collingwood has been bringing live professional theatre productions to local audiences for thirty-eight years. According to Executive Director Erica Angus, Theatre Collingwood re-tooled its focus during the twoyear pandemic hiatus and created innovative projects like The Porchside Festival. And, 2022 promises to be a very special year, packed with great programming, popular actors and directors, music theatre productions and outdoor plays and events. Deeply grateful for the incredible community support, Theatre Collingwood hosted a fun evening at Simcoe Street Theatre on May 3rd. After Erica discussed the line-up of exciting plays for the season, she introduced Michael Duhamel, an award-winning filmmaker who recently produced a video about Theatre Collingwood's mission and vision, shown on the big screen. Erica also shared the dire need for a large, dedicated Arts and Culture Centre to be built in Collingwood. Here is to an amazing 2022 season! PHOTOS | STORY: BRYAN DAVIES PHOTOGRAPHY. How does Habitat ReStore price its items? And why... In order to answer the question, there are a few key points that we need to clarify first: 1. Habitat Restore is the social enterprise of Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay. Social enterprises seek to maximize profits while maximizing benefits to society and the environment. - Proceeds from ReStore help fund Habitat SGB’s homebuilding activity for families in need of a safe, decent, and affordable place to live. - Habitat ReStore reduces the need for the production of new materials and the consumption of natural resources. As a result, it extends the value of household items, eliminating unnecessary waste, and ultimately decreasing our collective carbon footprint. 2. Our pricing structure is specific to the Habitat ReStore in South Georgian Bay. 3. The donations that we accept and sell tax-free to the community are gentlyused or brand new. 4. Like other retailers, we have operational expenses such as staffing, mortgage and utilities.

Your stuff, builds homes.

There are two main goals that we attempt to achieve through the pricing of ReStore items. 1. Earn as much revenue as possible for the charity so that we can help more working families in need of a decent place to live.

Donate your used furniture today!

2. Provide unique furniture and home improvement items to the community at a reasonable price (we are not just a cheap alternative to traditional retailers). Many people use our ReStores to find items that they can’t find at other stores, to experience the past in a new way, and find items for DIY projects such as upcycling and repurposing.

ReInvest in new and used items after your spring cleaning and help support us in building more homes.

We accomplish this by: - Assessing the condition of the items we accept and receive. - Researching how much the items or equivalent items sell for at other retailers. - Appraising items on initial assessment and once again by store staff upon arrival. - Basing initial pricing on volume, i.e. how many of these types of items we have in stock. - If we can’t find the price, we base it on our ReStore sales experience and how in-demand the items are at any given time.

Although we’re not perfect, we strive to price the items that we sell at a reasonable price, depending on the quality and condition of the item.

When you shop at Habitat ReStore you support Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay, the families we serve, and the environment. It’s a win-win-win! If you have any questions about our pricing, please talk to one of our Habitat ReStore staff. Habitat ReStores are independently owned stores operated by local Habitat for Humanity organizations. ReStores accept donations and sell a constantly changing inventory of diverse, high-quality merchandise to the public at a fraction of the retail price while diverting reusable household items and building materials from area landfills. Sales of donated items help Habitat for Humanity partner with local families to build safe and affordable homes in your community and around the world - a good deal for you, your community and the environment. Together, we can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build a better future while creating stronger neighbourhoods.

Back for Mór After two years of pandemic hiatus, Creemore Springs Brewery was excited to welcome back cyclists to Turas Mór on May 14th. Based upon the fantastic turnout, the cycling community was equally excited to enjoy the immensely popular vintage cycling event, which, since its inception in 2016, has become a signature event on most riding enthusiasts’ calendars. Hundreds of passionate participants enjoyed a wonderfully sunny and very hot day pedalling the Classic (60km), Challenger (40km) or Cruiser (20km) routes. Of course, after a long day of riding up and down the hilly roads of Clearview and Mulmur Townships, the opportunity to enjoy some cold beer, delicious lunch, live music, and quality time with friends back at the brewery was more than welcome. HAPPY

Father’s

DAY

Different ways to treat Dad for Father's Day The month of June is filled with many different celebrations. Once summer arrives in June, schools shut down for vacation, and most recreational attractions begin operating at full capacity. June also is the month to show dads how much they are loved and appreciated. Many Canadians observe Father's Day on the third Sunday of June. It is a day for people to show their appreciation for fathers and father figures and celebrate the fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in their society. Father figures may include stepfathers, fathers-in-law, guardians, etc. This year Father's Day takes place on Sunday, June 19th. Even though Father's Day began as a regional event in the state of Washington, nearly 60 years later, it would be recognized as a national holiday across the United States, which led to its adoption in Canada. Father's Day is also commemorated elsewhere in the world at various times of the year. The value of a father's guiding hand is quite often most realized in adulthood. Comedian Dan Zevin said of his father, "Lately, all my friends are worried that they are turning into their fathers. I'm worried I'm not." Of course, gifts are always appreciated, but here are other ways to show the love this father's day.

BBQ SUPPLIES

DAD

WILL LOVE!

Participate in his hobby Dad likely has hobbies such as playing a favourite sport, boating, hunting, woodworking, or restoring a classic car. Asking to join in to learn the ropes of his favourite hobby can be an ideal way to spend time with Dad and show you care. Tackle his chores Provide Dad a weekend off from his regular tasks around the house if they are within your skillset. For example, volunteer to mow the lawn, weed the garden, run for groceries, or get the car washed. You also may want to help him finish a project he started but hasn't yet completed. Take in a show or a game Maybe Dad has a favourite team he follows or a comedian he loves to watch. Purchase tickets so you can go in person. If that's not possible, make home viewing a special event by clearing a few hours of your schedule and setting up a comfortable viewing area. Make some special snacks and stream his favourite programming right at home. Give him "his" space Dads often make sacrifices for their families, and this could mean compromising on his comfort and pleasure to ensure everyone else has what they need. Create a spot that is entirely his own. This may involve renovating the basement or garage for hobbies or hanging out. Even a free-standing shed in the backyard can be billed as a "Dad Zone," giving your father a place to which he can retreat for some peace and quiet. Start thinking of special ways to show Dad he deserves top billing.

HOME PROPERTY GUIDE

THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN HELP YOU WITH YOUR NEEDS INSIDE & OUT!

Budget-friendly ways to upgrade a landscape An inviting, well-tended landscape can add significant curb appeal to a home. Such a landscape also can serve as a point of pride and welcome homeowners each evening as they arrive home from work.

arrangements each spring. Planting perennials also is a great way to add colour around the property without breaking the bank.

Landscaping projects run the gamut from simple changes that can be accomplished on a weekend afternoon to more significant and costly undertakings that require the work of a professional. Budget-conscious homeowners may be looking for more straightforward projects, and the following are some less expensive ways to upgrade a landscape.

Though it’s more expensive than adding planters and planting perennials, upgrading old and cracked walkways is a great way to give a property a whole new look. Homeowners working on a budget can target spots where walkways have already cracked and fix those areas before continuing the project piecemeal until all the old walkways have been replaced.

Add a pop of colour with planters. Awe-inspiring colours can make a landscape stand out from surrounding properties. Flowers, bushes and plants may be the first thing homeowners consider when adding colour to their lawns, but planters can provide a more immediate way to give exterior grounds some colour. Bold planters won’t lose their colour in weeks like many flowers do, and homeowners can switch planters, so the colours align with the season. For example, some pastel planters can evoke the spirit of spring, while orange planters can be filled with mums to give a landscape an autumnal feel. Plant perennials around the property. Well-maintained perennials grow back each year, making them ideal for homeowners who don’t have the time or desire to map out new gardening

Plant to create privacy. Homeowners spent more time at home than ever before during the pandemic, and some might have grown tired of seeing what their neighbours are up to. Fencing might be the first solution homeowners consider when looking to make their landscapes more private. But, new fencing installation can be expensive. A more costly and natural solution is to plant trees around the perimeter. Speak with a local landscaping professional, who can survey the property to see which trees might thrive and provide the privacy homeowners want. Creating an inviting landscape doesn’t have to break the bank. Instead, various small and relatively inexpensive projects can change the look and feel of a home’s exterior.

Enjoy safe backyard barbecues this summer Backyard barbecues are synonymous with warm weather. And, why wouldn't they be? Grilling over an open flame when the weather is warm embodies the relaxing spirit of spring and summer, prompting many people to leave their oven ranges behind in favour of charcoal and gas grills. As relaxing as backyard barbecues can be, they can quickly take a turn for the worse if cooks don't emphasize safety when grilling. Fires and burns/ injuries are things to be very conscious of. It's essential to balance the fun of grilling with safety when hosting a backyard barbecue or cooking for the family. The following are some steps people can take to ensure their backyard barbecues are safe.

CLEARLITE ELECTRIC

705-446-1407 Residential, Commercial, Industrial Authorized Generac Generator Dealer

Recognize that gas grills pose a threat as well.

Excavation, Trucking, Landscaping, Shore & Septic Work

It's easy to assume gas grills don't pose as significant a threat as charcoal grills, which produce soaring flames once the charcoal is lit. But, gas grills are involved in many home fires every year. No grill is completely safe, and cooks must emphasize safety whether they're using gas grills, charcoal grills or smokers.

CLEARLITE EXCAVATION & HAULAGE

705-446-1407

Only use grills outdoors. Grills should never be used indoors. Even if rain unexpectedly arrives during a backyard barbecue, keep the grill outside. If unexpected rain is accompanied by lightning and thunder, extinguish the fire in the grill and go indoors. Place the grill in a safe location. Grills should be placed well away from the home. Avoid locating grills near deck railings or beneath eaves and overhanging branches. Cut overgrown branches before lighting a grill fire if they are in close proximity to the grill. Keep your grill clean.

Open May and June Annuals • Perennials • Shrubs • Tropicals Hours: Tuesday–Saturday 9am–5pm Sunday 12pm-4pm

The buildup of grease and fat, both on the grill grate and in trays below the grill, increases the risk of fire. Clean the grill routinely. Properly light the grill. Lighting gas and charcoal grills requires caution. Before lighting a gas grill, make sure the lid is open. If you must use starter fluid to light a charcoal grill, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add any fluids to the fire after it has been lit. Do not leave a grill unattended. Cooks should never leave a lit grill unattended. If you must leave the grill, only do so if another adult can stand in your stead. Lit grills pose a threat to children and pets, and unattended grills can be blown over by gusts of wind or tipped by wild animals, such as squirrels. Standing by a lit grill at all times can protect against such accidents and injuries.

But, getting older often comes with certain deficits that may not make current living situations the safest for seniors. Seniors may be affected by low vision, mobility limitations, cognitive decline, balance issues, and loss of muscle strength. As a result, specific adaptations may be necessary if seniors want to stay in their homes, particularly in older homes that have not recently been renovated. Change knobs to levers This is an easy modification. Levers are much easier for individuals with arthritis or persons who lack dexterity in their hands. Everything from doorknobs to faucet knobs can be replaced with levers. Create zero-threshold entryways Zero-threshold entryways, also known as flush entries, do not require crossing a lip or any raised barrier. They can appear on doorways and showers and make it easy for people who have mobility issues, as well as those using scooters, walkers and wheelchairs, to move about unencumbered. Clear clutter/move obstructions One inexpensive modification is to remove extraneous furniture and accessories. Such a change widens walking spaces in a room and accommodates walkers and wheelchairs. In addition, furniture can be pushed to the room’s perimeter to make moving around easier. It’s also important to remove area rugs, as they’re often tripping hazards. Install grab rails and supports Minimizing falls could come down to providing support in key rooms of a home. For example, adding grab rails in the bathroom near the toilet and in the shower can help a person use those facilities without assistance. Likewise, install a grab rail close to seating in the kitchen to add support. Consider smart lighting Motion-activated or darkness-activated lighting switches and fixtures can automatically turn on lights, improving visibility. Also, rocker light switches are easier to maneuver than standard toggles. Invest in a stairlift Single-story homes are preferable for growing older gracefully, but many seniors live in multi-story homes. In addition, a stairlift makes a multi-floor home more accessible and easier to traverse staircases and reduces the risk of falls. These suggestions are just a few home modifications that can help seniors safely age in place.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

WATER DEPOT Ensuring that your family has safe drinking water is important and Water Depot has the water treatment equipment and expertise to provide clean, clear water for your home, cottage, and business. With over 25 years of experience in the water treatment industry, Eric Dubé is an expert in treating problem water. Eric and his wife, Nicole, have been a part of the Water Depot network for over 2 decades and are the proud owners of 5 locations in Alliston, Barrie, Wasaga Beach, Bracebridge and Parry Sound.

Water Softeners Water can contain hardness minerals that leave scale buildup on your bathroom and kitchen fixtures and inside your pipes. In addition to hard water drying out your skin, nails and hair, it can be very damaging to your appliances and plumbing. A water softener reduces hardness minerals so your appliances last longer and are more costefficient to operate. Iron Filters Iron-laden water, which leaves rust stains on your sink and toilet, is a very common problem in Ontario. If your water has high levels of red iron, the water coming out of your tap will be brown and your water will taste metallic. A Water Depot iron filter will reduce the iron resulting in odour-free water that won’t stain your fixtures. Reverse Osmosis Systems

Eric is passionate about providing solutions for problem water. “Many people struggle with a variety of drinking water-related issues and most are unaware of how easy it can be to solve them”, says Eric. Some of the most common water complaints are hard water scaling, brown or yellow water, smelly water, staining on fixtures, or concerns about chemicals, to name a few. These problems can be caused by iron, tannins, sediment, or other organic materials found in municipal, lake, and well water. A simple test, performed by Eric, or one of his Water Treatment Technicians, will determine the cause of your issue and the course of action required. Water Depot offers complimentary in-home or in-store water tests. During the test, your raw tap water will be examined for hardness minerals, red and clear iron, pH level, total dissolved solids (TDS), clarity, odour, and colour. This data together with the information about your family’s water usage will determine the correct water treatment equipment and the sizing of the equipment required to bring clean, clear water to your home. Water Depot carries a range of water treatment equipment including water softeners, iron, tannin and sediment filters, Reverse Osmosis systems and Ultraviolet systems.

A Reverse Osmosis system uses a series of filters and a reverse osmosis membrane to purify your water, leaving your family with clean, fresh drinking water. A Reverse Osmosis system delivers high-quality, filtered drinking water conveniently available from your faucet right at your kitchen sink, and is stored in a sealed tank for whenever your family wants it. Ultraviolet Systems Rural water can be difficult to treat, as it can contain microorganisms and pathogens, such as e.coli and coliform. An ultraviolet system inactivates these microorganisms, without adding any chemicals. As water passes through the system, a high intensity UV light provides disinfection drastically improving the quality of your water. U-Fill Water All 5 of Eric’s locations offer U-Fill water tables with both Reverse Osmosis and Alkaline water taps. Water Depot prides itself on providing “water at its best” and our U-Fill Reverse Osmosis water goes through a rigorous 6-step purification process. Available in a variety of bottle sizes U-Fill water is available as pay-as-you-go or in a variety of cost-saving pre-paid packages. Eric and his team of Water Treatment Experts pride themselves on quality customer service and providing solutions for problem water.

7 things to know before replacing windows The decision to replace windows often comes down to aesthetics and necessity. Drafty windows can reduce energy efficiency in a home, requiring HVAC systems to work harder to keep interiors comfortable. The harder the HVAC must work, the more homeowners will pay in energy costs. Old windows also may be points of entry for water and insects. Despite the importance of windows, new windows make up only a fraction of the home's total exterior "envelope," resulting in only about 5 to 15 percent of total energy savings.

HOME & PROPERTY

Relax, leave the cleaning to us!

mollymaid.ca

But, there are still plenty of reasons to invest in new windows. Vinyl or aluminum may be best. Lumber is farmed rather quickly today, and solid wood products may not stand up to elements as well as wood used a half-century ago. To avoid rot, vinyl windows often are an affordable and durable choice. Homeowners also have the option of wood windows with aluminum cladding, which are long-lasting. Moisture problems indicate windows need to be replaced. Condensation that shows up as fogging between double-pane windows or on the inside indicates that the windows are starting to fail. If installing a vapour barrier in the basement or crawl space, ventilating properly when showering or cooking, or using a dehumidifier indoors does not remedy the situation, it might be time to replace windows. Windows add curb appeal. Beyond functionality, replacement windows immediately update the look of the home and can improve curb appeal since they are one of the most prominent features on a home's exterior. If a house needs an update, replacing windows can be a quick and affordable update. Specialty cleaners of rugs and upholstery

Consider other energy-efficient upgrades. Sometimes older windows can be salvaged, especially if they are not damaged and only moderately drafty. Replacing panes, sash cords, weather stripping, and even glazing may be less expensive than replacing a window. Plus, older homes with attractive windows complement one another. To keep energy bills down, consider adding insulation to the attic and basement - which is a good idea even if you are replacing windows. The wrong windows can adversely affect home value. Typically, homeowners will benefit from an investment in replacing windows when they resell a home. But choosing the wrong windows might lower the value of the house. Therefore, it's important to match the look of the original windows, including window material and the divided light pattern (the number of panes in each window) with the original windows.

Think about soundproofing, too. Think about how specific windows can cancel out noises and make homes more soundproof when upgrading windows. Some windows can help reduce outdoor distractions like leaf blowers or lawnmowers. Proper installation is key to longevity. Replacement windows are only as good as their installation in many cases. Poor installation and orders of standard rather than custom-sized windows could result in poor fitting and seals. Homeowners should carefully vet and review window replacement contractors to find the best professionals for the job.

Vacation often serves as a well-deserved break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. When relaxing and recharging away from home, the last thing vacationers want to think about is the safety of their homes and everything inside them. However, the National Council for Home Safety and Security and Statistics Canada estimates that more than two million burglaries occur in the United States and Canada every year. That underscores the importance of protecting your home at all times, including when you’re not there. Create the impression that someone is home. Just because you’re heading off for parts unknown doesn’t mean you can’t create the impression that life is carrying on as usual within the walls of your home. Smart home technology now enables homeowners to set timers on lights and even home electronics like televisions and radios. Homeowners also can ask neighbours to pick up their mail or halt delivery until they return from their trips. Nothing says “no one’s home” as definitively as an overflowing mailbox.

Keep quiet on social media. A Credit Sesame survey of former burglars in the United Kingdom found that 78 percent acknowledged monitoring social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter as they try to find homes to burglarize. Individuals about to go on vacation should avoid sharing that on social media. Stay silent while you’re away as well. Social media silence should be continued while you’re on vacation as well. No matter how tempting it may be to share photos from an exotic location, such posts could catch the attention of all the wrong people. A recent report from MetLife indicated that 35 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 check-in from their locations via social media. That can alert criminals that no one is manning the fort back home. Switch from a traditional lock and key to a lockbox. Individuals who travel frequently can take a page from the realtor notebook and switch from a traditional lock and key lock system to a lockbox. Lockboxes require that a code is entered before a box containing a key can be unlocked. Homeowners who want this added measure of protection don’t even need to put a key inside the lockbox, which typically covers a lock, making it extremely difficult for potential thieves to pick the lock.

How to stay safe on DIY projects Depending on the scope of the project, some homeowners look to cut such costs by doing it yourself (DIY). DIY renovation projects require attention to detail, which includes an emphasis on safety. Homeowners who are injured on DIY projects may face costly medical bills, while projects that are completed without incident could later pose safety hazards that require work to be redone, which is both expensive and a threat to personal safety in the interim. DIYers need not be discouraged from taking projects on themselves, but they should heed these tips to stay safe when working on their homes. Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder. Be especially careful with power tools. Power tools can do a lot, and they’re fun to use. But it’s important that DIYers do not let fun distract them from safety. Wear personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, whenever using power tools. Make sure tools are powered down before plugging them in and inspect the tool before using it. Inspections can confirm that all guards are in place and that tools are up to the task at hand. Much like it’s unsafe to overreach on a ladder, overreaching when using power tools increases the risk for mistakes, accidents and injuries.

HOME INSPECTION

for peace of mind when you are buying a home

Avoid electrical work.

PRE-LISTING INSPECTION

Complicated electrical work is best left to the professionals. Electrical malfunctions cause thousands of house fires each year. Such malfunctions can occur for myriad reasons, and a lack of experience working with electrical circuits and breakers could make homes vulnerable to malfunctions and fires. It’s also worth noting that homeowners’ insurance policies may not cover damage caused by DIY electrical work. So at the very least, homeowners should contact their insurance providers to determine if any accidents or injuries caused by DIY electrical work would be covered by their policies.

to make your home easier to market and sell

MAINTENANCE INSPECTION when you own a home and want to know what to look after

DIY renovation projects can save homeowners a lot of money, but those savings aren’t worth compromising your safety and the safety of your loved ones.

Cancer Chat Hey Georgian Life readers, have you heard of PFOA? The acronym PFOA stands for perfluorooctanoic acid, a man-made chemical used in the production of fluoropolymers belonging to a class of chemicals known as polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFOA is used to make products that resist sticking, heat, and water; the most famous product is Teflon, used in non-stick cookware. Recently, PFOA has emerged as a carcinogen and toxicant to the liver. PFOA has been manufactured and in commercial use since the early 1940s. Originally made by 3M, in 1951, DuPont Chemicals purchased PFOA for use in the manufacturing of Teflon and referred to the material as C8. Due to widespread applications, by 1976, PFOA use spread across the consumer market for many products, including carpeting, upholstery, apparel, outdoor clothing, floor wax, textiles, fire fighting foam, and sealants. By the early 1970s, fluoropolymers from PFOA exposure could be detected in the serum of consumers. Nearly 30 years later, in 1999, the environmental protection agency (EPA) ordered companies to examine the effects of PFOA and PFOS after receiving data on global distribution and human toxicity. At this time, PFOA and precursors from manufacturing were added to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) list of toxic substances.

As a result of the class-action lawsuit brought on by Taft Stettinius & Hollister and the community settlement with DuPont, three epidemiologists conducted studies on the population surrounding the Fayetteville chemical plant. The studies established a correlation between high PFOA exposure and six health outcomes: kidney cancer, testicular cancer, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, hypercholesterolemia, and pregnancy-induced hypertension. In 2016, the EPA issued a lifetime health advisory that exposure to PFOA may cause testicular and kidney cancer. By 2015, more than three thousand plaintiffs had filed personal-injury lawsuits against DuPont. In 2017, DuPont reached a $670 million cash settlement related to 3,550 personal-injury lawsuits tied to PFOA contamination of drinking water in Parkersburg, West Virginia, near the Washington plant. DuPont denied any wrongdoing.

In 2000, lawyer Robert Bilott, a partner at Taft Stettinius & Hollister, won a court order forcing DuPont to share all documentation related to PFOA. In total, 110,000 files were submitted, consisting of confidential studies and reports conducted by DuPont scientists. Bilott learned that DuPont had been conducting secret medical studies on PFOA for more than four decades. As early as 1961, DuPont was aware that mice fed with PFOA developed hepatomegaly, an enlarged liver suggestive of liver disease. The documentation exposed that by 1993, DuPont understood that PFOA caused testicular, pancreatic, and liver tumours in lab animals. However, PFOA-manufactured products earned DuPont $1 billion in annual profit, so production continued. DuPont had produced PFOA for over 50 years at chemical plants in Washington, West Virginia and Fayetteville, North Carolina. PFOA had received attention due to litigation from the contaminated community in Fayetteville. In 2001, area residents sued DuPont, claiming PFOA was exposing their community to an increased risk of illness. In 2004, an externally performed risk assessment reported that over 1.7 million pounds of C8 had been dumped, poured, and released into the environment from Dupont's plants between 1951 and 2003. In 2012, scientists at Emory University in Atlanta established that DuPont plant

HAPpY

workers who were exposed to high levels of PFOA were at three times the risk of dying of mesothelioma or chronic kidney disease, and roughly twice the risk of dying of diabetes mellitus compared to other DuPont workers. In 2014, the EPA announced the toxicity and bioaccumulation of PFOA and PFOS pose potential adverse effects on human health and the environment.

Today, PFOA contaminates every continent. PFOA has been detected in the blood of 98% of the US population. Health Canada reports low concentrations of PFOA are found in the blood of 99% of Canadians. PFOA is resistant to degradation by natural processes such as metabolism or biodegradation, enabling it to remain in the body indefinitely. PFOA has been detected in the Pacific Ocean and is present in numerous mammals, fish, and birds. Food, drinking water, air, and dust are implicated as the major sources of PFOA exposure. In 2016, Canada prohibited the use of PFOS. However, while PFOA and PFOS have been largely phased out of use, these chemicals are only two of the more than 3,000 related compounds still used in many consumer goods, including cookware. No proven risks to humans have been established using cookware coated with Teflon to date. For his work in the exposure of the contamination, lawyer Robert Bilott has received several awards, and his battle with DuPont is featured in two films, 'The Devil We Know' released in 2018, and 'Dark Waters' released in 2019. PET OF THE MONTH: HANK Male | 10 months old Meet Hank! This sweet, young dog is growing into a big boy! He can be a wee bit nervous at first, but once he is comfortable, his true, friendly self shines through! That said, he is on some special medicine to help with his anxiety. He has been doing well with basic obedience lessons, and he loves water. Hank is the type of dog who enjoys swimming, running in puddles, etc. He is also a bit choosey about other dog friends, so being the only dog in a new home would be best for this awesome guy.

How consolidation can enhance your retirement income By consolidating your investment accounts with one advisor, you can reduce fees, streamline your overall investment strategy and enhance your retirement income. Consolidation also avoids multiple advisors having only partial visibility of your overall financial life.

Double Your Shopping Power every other Wednesday on mycollingwood.ca

This becomes even more important as you approach retirement. There are key decisions to be made in structuring a retirement strategy, such as coordinating your various sources of income to ensure you’re receiving everything you’re entitled to, and doing so in a tax-efficient manner. This includes optimizing your many income sources, such as pensions, government benefits, RRSPs, TFSAs, RRIFs, and any on-going employment income. It is also important to remember that not all income is taxed equally. The structure of your assets significantly impacts your after-tax income, as different types of income are taxed in different ways. Consolidation provides clarity for your advisor on properly structuring your investments within registered and non-registered accounts. More than picking the right stock or trying to time the market, identifying and rebalancing your optimal asset allocation over time has the most impact on the strength of your portfolio. If you have multiple advisors blindly buying stocks or funds without a proper overview of your total assets, you risk duplication and redundancy in your portfolio. Consolidating your investment accounts can give you a better understanding of how your assets are both allocated and diversified, while helping you avoid duplication and over-exposure risks. Consolidation is also important for the bigger financial picture - a comprehensive financial plan. This plan should be an adaptable step-by-step document that serves as the blue-print for your overall financial strategy and allows you to track progress towards your financial goals. Consolidating your assets with one advisor provides complete clarity of your current financial situation and helps ensure the validity and value of your plan.

At the end of the day, benefiting from one advisor who can offer guidance with your complete financial picture in mind also depends on trust. It’s important to find someone you are comfortable relying on, someone who can understand your needs and help you achieve true “wealth.” For more information on the benefits of comprehensive wealth management, contact Cassandra de Groot of de Groot Wealth Management of RBC Dominion Securities at cassandra.degroot@rbc.com or 705-444-4787 or visit their team website at www.edegroot.ca This article is supplied by Cassandra de Groot, Investment Advisor with RBC Dominion Securities Inc. BUSINESS PROFILE:

Let’s get Saucy! Saucy Pasta and Gourmet Foods began with a love of Italian cooking. Founder, Rick Gillman, evolved his passion for Italian cooking into an obsession, learning the nuances of the traditional recipes he lovingly sourced from Italy and around the globe. His love of premium and novel ingredients results in a unique fusion of traditional and modern Italian flavours.

Many varieties of sauces are available: Vegetarian, Rosé, Beef Bolognese, Chicken Breast Cacciatore, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Red Pepper Rose, Tracy’s Arrabbiata, Puttanesca, Caper & Kalamata, and Heretic Spirits A la Vodka - as well as Alfredo and Pesto, three Vegan and eight Vegetarian options - all Gluten Free.

After beginning Saucy Pasta in 2014 and closing due to health reasons, the seed was already planted. Rick and Tracy recognized the rapidly changing restaurant landscape during the pandemic and saw an opportunity to create a new model; Saucy Artisan Pasta was born. Their first location opened in Thornbury in 2020. After selling out almost daily, Tracy and Rick decided to scale up to meet both the demand of their regular clientelle and the many requests from local restaurants and stores interested in carrying their quality pasta. As a result, Saucy Artisan Pasta’s new flagship store and Pasta Factory opened in Cranberry Mews in Collingwood in the winter of 2021.

Other specialties include in-house fresh baked daily demi-baguettes and Rosemary Foccacia, made-from-scratch Tiramisu, Fresh Lobster and Ricotta Cannelloni, Jumbo Stuffed Spinach and Ricotta or Beef Stuffed Shells, Lemon Biscotti, Fresh Shaved Parmesan Reggiano, Brie/Walnut/Pear Ravioli and much, much more. Selections change daily. Hot take-out food is coming to the menu this summer. Saucy Pasta is also the exclusive regional distributor of Magiccann Pain relief topicals.

Welcome, Saucy Pasta 2.0

Saucy Pasta offers a vast array of over 30 varieties of fresh pasta shapes and flavour infusions, made fresh daily, ranging from traditional to unique and novel. They create a dozen different sauces - made from fresh milled tomatoes - not a concentrate like most restaurants use. Saucy creates handmade ravioli, cannelloni, and four varieties of lasagna, assembled daily from scratch. Rick’s penchant for premium ingredients includes using specially sourced non-GMO flour, spring water, sea salt, local free-range eggs and chicken, local pasture-raised beef, and local, seasonal produce.

Saucy’s fresh lasagna is legendary. There are eleven layers: five layers of herb and garlic-infused sheets, five layers of sauce, ricotta cheese in the middle, finished with a layer of mozzarella. Four varieties made daily: Vegetarian, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Beef Bolognese, and Chicken Breast Cacciatore. Fresh, frozen, and gluten-free are available. If you prefer to make your own lasagna, fresh lasagna sheets are available.

ACTUAL SOCIAL MEDIA FEeDBACK: Best lasagna we have ever tasted. We will be back real soon! – Lani Bought a lasagna and it was fantastic!! Best I have ever had! What a difference fresh pasta makes to the dish! Look forward to trying more dishes! – Lynn

Saucy offers an incredible array of infused Pasta such as 5 Fresh Herb and Garlic, Spinach, Lemon Peppercorn, and Sundried Tomato and more exotic varieties like Squid Ink, Lemon and Sage, Porcini Mushroom, and Wild Leek infused. The selection changes daily, as do the daily specials - usually posted on Facebook and Instagram. Saucy’s fresh-milled tomato sauces are prepared using premium San Marzano tomatoes slow-cooked with fresh herbs and produce. Meat sauces use premium, local, naturally raised meats and premium fresh seafood.

A new state of the art library Clearview Public Library in Stayner hosted its Grand Opening ceremony on May 14th. It was a wonderful community event with a military tank, Clearview fire trucks, mini-wooden airplanes to drive and costumed Star Wars characters. Clearview Mayor Doug Measures, Architect Luc Bouliane and library staff cut the ribbon to allow people inside this architectural wonder. Luc said: We thought about how to create a space that generated the best light for the library’s needs. Our design won the Best in Ontario architectural award. Inside, the building was busy with tours, a used book sale, free ice cream and a local artist who was painting. The futuristic design and functionality of the library make it one of the most inspiring public buildings in Clearview.

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Exposure to noise and loud sounds can cause hearing loss. So how loud is too loud? The noise level and the duration of exposure will dictate the amount of hearing loss. Loudness is measured in units called decibels. The consensus on noise in the workplace is no louder than 85 dB. A person can be exposed to 85 dB or less of noise for an 8-hour workday. This is considered acceptable from a regulation standpoint. Sound levels above 85 dB will have an increasingly detrimental effect on hearing. Specifically, for every 3 dB increase in the sound level, the length of acceptable exposure will be diminished by half. For example: for 88 dB, the exposure time will decrease from 8 hours to 4; 91 dB will be 2 hours, and so on. When sound is over 100 dB, the safe exposure time will only be minutes. To put it in perspective, average conversation levels are around 65 dB, whispering is 30 dB, a dishwasher is 70 dB, and an ambulance siren or a jet engine is 120 dB.

Waste Disposal • Tilt & Load Service 10 to 40 cu yd Bins 705.444.6885 Top Price Paid for Scrap• Autos and Metals Used Auto Parts • New & Used Steel Supplier 705.445.4440 1988 – 34 Years of Service – 2022 9325 Beachwood Road, Collingwood

People often think large factories with equipment and machines running are noisy work environments. While these settings do have high decibel levels, many other types of environments also surpass the safe threshold of 85 dB. Automotive garages, manufacturing facilities, heavy equipment operators and truck drivers, pilots, police officers, landscapers, and more are common sources of noise in the workplace. When someone is exposed regularly to high noise levels at work, there is a strong possibility of noise-induced hearing loss. If someone experiences hearing loss due to their work environment, they may be eligible to make a claim with a compensation board. In Ontario, we have the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB). Noise-induced hearing loss can also happen to those in military service. Firearms, explosives, etc., reach dangerous levels and may cause permanent hearing loss. If there is a decline in hearing and there is or has been exposure to workplace noise, there may be noise-induced hearing loss. It is essential to see an Audiologist to be properly assessed. Once the assessment is complete and the results have been studied, there may be options for applying to either WSIB or Veterans Affairs Canada for noise-induced hearing loss coverage. The applications are straightforward. The clinic can provide you with the paperwork and assist in completing the application. Even if the person has retired, they can still apply. Make an appointment with an Audiologist to discuss your work-related hearing loss concerns. Submitted by: Curt Culford, M.Cl.Sc. Aud, Reg. Keeping our streams clean and our cities cool On April 29th, community members removed 120m² of asphalt by hand to transform part of a parking lot into a community space that boosts food security and environmental health. In partnership with the Town of Collingwood, The Environment Network expanded a green space at Heritage Park that will feature native plant species, reduce stormwater run-off pollution, and reduce the risk of flooding in the area. The food grown in this community garden will be available to residents of Collingwood. It will also help stock the community fridge located at the Collingwood Youth Centre. Removing asphalt and concrete by hand at neighbourhood workbees is an exciting new trend that renews, beautifies and makes better use of neglected urban spaces. The hands-on depaving process captures the hearts and energies of diverse people with a shared goal of creating vibrant, beautiful and healthy communities. Depave Paradise demonstration projects motivate volunteers to continue depaving, either on their own properties or in common spaces.

DRIVE INTO

SUMMER

THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN HELP YOU WITH YOUR DRIVING NEEDS

Stay safe in bright driving conditions Weather often contributes to motor vehicle accidents. Snow, rain, and other factors that compromise drivers’ vision can make driving hazardous, but there’s a dark side to sunny skies as well. Glare from the sun can compromise drivers’ vision and lead to driving mishaps, regardless of drivers’ experience or skill level. The sun can pack a powerful punch any time during the day but can be especially hazardous in the early morning during sunrise and late afternoon at sunset.

Make sure the windshield is clean. Watermarks, dead insects, cracks, and road grime can make it even harder to see out of the windshield when the sun is blazing. Clean windshields regularly, and don’t wait until you’re headon into the sun to engage the windshield washer spray. Doing so may only further compromise visibility. Observe speed limits. When glare is present, slow down and keep more space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. If someone in front of you needs to brake suddenly, the greater distance between vehicles can give you more time to react and avoid accidents.

A study published in the journal Medicine titled “Life-threatening motor vehicle crashes in bright sunlight” looked at the risks posed by bright sunlight. Researchers found that the risk of a lifethreatening crash was 16 percent higher during bright sunlight than during normal weather. Researchers concluded that bright sunlight may create visual illusions that lead to driver error, including poor distance judgement.

Change your route. Try changing your commute so you’re not driving head-on into the eastern sun in the morning and western sun in the afternoon.

Plentiful sunlight is often a hallmark of spring and summer, but sun-blindness is a real concern for drivers. Anyone who has turned into the blazing sun only to discover their windshield has been rendered opaque by sun glare can attest that driving on sunny days can be challenging. Unfortunately, the sun might create substantial glare during rush hour, making driving during these times more dangerous and accidents more likely. While there might be no way to prevent glare, drivers can take steps to make driving safer during times of day when glare is prevalent.

Elmvale’s Trusted Auto Repair Shop for Four Decades

Invest in new sunglasses. Special lenses that mitigate glare, UV rays and blue light can make it easier for drivers to handle glare when behind the wheel. Make sure the visor is functioning. Sun visors are there for a reason. Use it to the best of your ability, angling as needed. Pull over. If the glare is especially bad, play it safe and pull over until the sun rises or sets. You also may want to change your driving time to avoid the glare. Motor vehicle accidents can happen on bright, sunny days. Glare can compromise drivers’ visibility, and drivers may need to take steps to protect their vision on sunny days.
