If you asked people when they are in a normal and clear-thinking state, whether they want to commit crimes and victimize others, the overwhelming response would be “of course not, what a dumb question.” Yet, the bad deeds and damage never end. As much as we mere mortals may aspire to the heights of the seven cardinal virtues of chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, gratitude, and humility, we are often drawn down to the seven deadly sins of lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. These sins permeate through the criminal justice system. Lust leading to sex crimes, gluttony behind alcohol and drug-fuelled offences, greed and envy at the root of theft and property-related transgressions, wrath causing the violence of assaults and murders, pride underlying the pursuit of power and much of the political and corporate corruption that ensues. And sloth, the evil of failing to act morally and turning a blind eye to the serious misdeeds of others due to laziness or apathy. When someone is found guilty of a criminal offence, the Judge then has the difficult task of sentencing that person, trying to make the punishment fit the crime. What kind of offence was it? What is the previous background of the offender? What damage did it cause the victim? Some of the principles and factors that our judges consider and try to balance are:

Pre-List Inspection, Pre-Purchase Inspection, Post Purchase Inspection New Construction Inspection (PDI and Tarion) Commercial Building Inspection (ICI Properties) Maintenance and Repair Inspection Thermal Imaging, CO Testing, Insured WETT Certified – Site Basic Inspection Level 1 #11142 WETT Level 2, Chimney Cleaning and Repairs Arranged Septic and Well Inspections Arranged

• Deterrence – the sentence should be meaningful enough to deter this specific offender from committing a crime again and/or should send a message to the general public that this type of offence warrants a significant penalty. “Sinners will be punished.” • Denunciation – the sentence should send a message to the offender from the community denouncing their actions as unacceptable, expressing the public indignation and condemnation towards the crime. “Shame on you.” • Rehabilitation – the sentence should consider and understand the background and situation of the offender and aim to rehabilitate that person through counselling and other means to make them better members of society. “Use our tomorrows to correct the wrongs of yesterday. On the road from sinner to saint.” • Retribution – the sentence should be related to the damage the offender caused. “An eye for an eye.”

SUNDAY FUNDAY

TRIVIANIGHT

7-9pm BP Gift Card Prizes

• Restitution and restoration – the sentence should aim to compensate and restore the victim as much as possible by having the offender pay for damages, provide a letter of apology, attend mediation together, etc. “Let me try to make it up to you.” • Separation from society – the sentence should consider whether the offender must be separated from society to protect the victim and/or keep the public safe. “You’ve left me with no other choice, you’re going to jail, mister.” It’s not a perfect system and far from a perfect world. So it would be impossible for judges always to get it right. However, we continue to try and hope that offenders and victims will find strength to improve and get better, to hear this voice, either from deep within or somewhere beyond: I will provide for you And I’ll stand by your side You’ll need a good companion now For this part of the ride Leave behind your sorrows Let this day be the last Tomorrow there’ll be sunshine And all this darkness past

Getting to Know Habitat South Georgian Bay Established in 2002, Habitat South Georgian Bay continues to create stable and secure housing for hardworking local families. Together with the community, Habitat for Humanity helps families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership. We’re passionate about building a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live, and we believe that it benefits all of society when they do. OUR STAYNER BUILD Our Habitat homes are truly built with love, constructed by caring volunteers, with the support of dedicated, skilled Habitat for Humanity Staff. We are currently in the process of building a home at 219 John Street, Stayner that will be home to a young couple and their two young boys. We are in the home stretch, but we still need your help to cross the finish line. In 2023, we will embark on our next build at 218 Christopher Street (right behind our current build site). We are accepting applications for this build – if you can afford a mortgage payment, but just don’t have the down payment, you may qualify for our home ownership program. GET INVOLVED We could not do this without the support from individuals and businesses in our community. Building a Habitat home takes many hands – and Habitat needs your financial support, your voice and your time. There are so many ways that you can get involved with Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay, from cash and product donations to volunteering at our ReStore or helping to build a Habitat Home (or helping our build volunteers stay nourished by donating a lunch or helping with our food program). Whether you are a contractor or have never picked up a hammer in your life, we can use your help! Consider this an opportunity to meet new people while strengthening your community by building safe, affordable housing. You’ll have the ability to improve the lives of people, work alongside future Habitat homeowners, learn different skills or advocate for affordable housing. Together with the community, Habitat helps families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership. HELP WITH BUILD LUNCHES During the build, our dedicated construction volunteers, build participants and homeowner families are working alongside one another at our build site working on their homes and enjoying a meal together. As they work side by side and eat together, community grows, and people are engaged in the lives of others. We provide lunch as a thank you for their hard work through the contribution of churches, community groups, restaurants and community-minded businesses. We welcome a prepared individually bagged/boxed lunch that your group can deliver to the build site (or we can pick it up) or a cash donation to order lunch for a build day (and eligible for a charitable tax receipt). Please contact us to let us know how you can help! SEEKING BOARD MEMBERS Habitat SGB is currently seeking individuals to be part of a dynamic volunteer group of highly talented, dedicated and accomplished individuals, from a variety of relevant sectors, who are committed to helping Habitat South Georgian Bay accomplish its mission. She will be 3 in September. Unfortunately, Abby has been fighting cancer in her eye for close to a year now. She has been doing regular appointments at Sick Kids for chemo treatments and checkups for her Retinoblastoma. Abby loves to play soccer, colour, and go to the park with her friends. She is the toughest kid I know, and amidst all of her hardships is always wearing a smile on her face!" Healthy Corn Fritters with Yogurt-Cilantro-Dip Here’s to farm fresh corn showing up in local grocery stores, farmer’s markets and by-the-road fruit and veggie stands. While you can never go wrong serving boiled or grilled corn on the cob, these corn fritters, made with fresh corn kernels, are irresistible and an epic crowd pleaser. It’s worth noting that this recipe uses less oil for frying than classic corn fritters, and to further reduce the fat content, consider cooking these patties in your air fryer. Serve with a creamy cilantro dip to add an extra layer of flavour and elegance. INGREDIENTS Corn Fritters: ☐ 3 cups (750 ml) corn cut off cob ☐ 2 green onions, thinly sliced ☐ 1 /2 cup (125 ml) all-purpose, whole wheat or gluten-free flour ☐ 2 teaspoons (10 ml) maple syrup ☐ 1 /4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) baking soda

☐ 1/3 cup (83 ml) low-fat dairy, oat or soy milk ☐ 1 tablespoon (15 ml) canola, olive or vegetable oil for frying Cilantro-Yogurt Dip: ☐ 1 cup (250 ml) chopped, fresh cilantro ☐ 1/4 onion, finely minced

☐ 1 /4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) garlic powder

☐ 1 cup (250 ml) yogurt or vegan yogurt

☐ 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) salt

☐ 1/4 (1.25 ml) ground coriander

☐ 1 /2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) black pepper

☐ 2-3 tablespoons (30-45 ml) fresh lemon juice

☐ A pinch or 2 of cayenne pepper

☐ Salt and pepper to taste

☐ 1 egg lightly beaten or 1 Chia Egg (combine 1 Tbsp (15 ml) chia seeds + 2 1/2 tablespoons (40 ml) water and let set for 10 minutes) INSTRUCTIONS Corn Fritters 1. In a large bowl, combine the corn, green onions, flour, maple syrup, baking soda, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper. Stir until combined. 2. Add in the egg or chia egg and the milk. Mix just until well blended. 3. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. 4. Drop 1/4 cup (63 ml) of the batter into the frying pan to make each fritter. Cook 3-7 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Reduce the heat if necessary to ensure that the fritters are thoroughly cooked without burning. Cilantro-Yogurt Dip 1. In a bowl, stir the cilantro, onion, yogurt, coriander and lemon juice. 2. Season with salt and pepper to taste. ENJOY!

Did You Know?

These kid-friendly corn fritters offer a serving of vegetables (i.e., 1/2 cup or 125 ml of corn kernels). They are a good source of gut-loving insoluble fibre, vitamin C, important B vitamins and minerals such as zinc, magnesium, copper, manganese and iron.

Audiences adored the Porchside Festival 39 extraordinary performances by 25 talented artists on 13 beautiful porches equalled one fantastic festival! "The festival was created last summer during the pandemic, and people loved it so much we decided to bring it back and make it even bigger," said Erica Angus. It was so popular that they brought it back even bigger for July 2022 with a diverse lineup, sure to satisfy even the most discerning patrons of the arts. The festival included both singers and story tellers and was packed with outstanding Canadian talent. POOL SAFETY

Stuart Ellis Pharmacy 169 Hurontario St., Collingwood, ON 705-445-4711

Pool safety essentials to live by A backyard pool can be a wonderful summer oasis, an entertaining activity for people of all ages. Swimming immediately cools people off on hot and humid days and even provides thorough exercise that works many different muscles in the body. Though pools are great summer spaces, one downside of pool usage is the potential for drowning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that every year in the United States, there are an estimated 3,960 fatal unintentional drownings - an average of 11 drowning deaths per day. In addition, around 8,080 nonfatal drownings occur. It’s important to note that many of these incidents are unrelated to pool usage, as boating and even bathtub accidents also contribute to drowning. But, a 2020 review of 2,213 unintentional immersion deaths and other water-related injury deaths in Canada by the Canadian Red Cross found that immersion deaths were most likely to occur when swimming and wading. In addition, children ages one to four, males, and people with seizure disorders or other medical conditions like autism are among those at a higher risk for drowning. Pools are fun, but it’s a great responsibility to keep all swimmers safe. The following are some pool safety measures to put into effect.

Keep water sanitary. Make sure pool water is chemically balanced so it is comfortable to swim in and will not harbour any pathogens that can make swimmers ill. The ideal water pH is 7.4 because it is the same as the pH in human eyes and mucous membranes and supports good chlorine disinfection. The free chlorine content of a pool can range from 0.5 to 1.6 to keep it sanitary. A quality testing kit can help pool owners balance water. Learn your local ordinances. Local ordinances will spell out which precautionary measures are required by law for people who have a backyard pool. These often include a fenced yard, a fence around inground pools at least four feet high, self-latching gates, and/or pool ladders that can be locked or closed when the pool isn’t in use. Rely on non-slip surfaces. The pool environment can be wet and slippery. Utilizing materials like non-slip deck surfaces or rougher concrete finishes around pools can help reduce some slips and falls. People should be instructed to avoid running near or around the pool. Inspect water returns and drains. Hair, limbs, jewellery, or bathing suits can get stuck in a drain or suction opening in a pool or spa. Broken or missing drain covers should be replaced immediately, and no swimming should occur until the issue is remedied. Install other barriers. Barriers, alarms and pool covers can save lives and prevent access to pool water when the pool area is not in use. Learn how to swim and perform CPR. Families can take swimming lessons to become better swimmers. Learning how to perform CPR on adults and children can save lives. Swimming pools are welcome additions to yards, but safety is vital when around water. You can help ensure that everyone enjoys a safe and fun summer season.

Recognize these outdoor hazards

Approved Veterans Provider

Spending time outdoors is good for the mind and the body. Researchers have studied the effects that spending time outdoors, particularly in wooded areas, has on well-being. A 2021 meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health concluded that forest-based interventions have a beneficial, therapeutic effect on stress, mental health disorders, hypertension, and immune system function. In their excitement to engage in outdoor activities, nature lovers should not forget to heed safety precautions. That means recognizing the potential for safety hazards outdoors and how to react in potentially difficult situations.

Adding Life to Years...

It’s What We Do

Weather Weather patterns can change rapidly. Always check multiple weather sources for your destination before heading out. Layer clothing accordingly for the weather in your destination, and have a plan in case a storm blows in. If stuck outdoors in a thunderstorm with lightning, find a low spot with a ditch or a depression, suggests AccuWeather. Keep in mind that tents and pavilions provide inadequate shelter and are nearly as risky as standing under a tall tree, advises the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

WE ARE HIRING CALL NOW!

Injuries

Topography The lay of the land can be hazardous. Outdoor enthusiasts should be aware of their surroundings, including sheer cliff edges, steep climbs, loose rocks, deep waters, and more. CoolHikingGear.com warns that any river above ankle height has the potential to sweep a person off their feet if the current is moving. Avoid crossing rivers and know the terrain ahead of time to plan safely. Wildlife People are not the only animals who enjoy the great outdoors. Encountering wildlife is common when venturing into their habitats. Some animals even travel into residential neighbourhoods in search of food. Many animals prefer to run off rather than engage with humans. But they also can be surprised by people or pets in nature. Travelling in groups; making noise not to surprise animals, keeping pets close by and avoiding hiking at dawn and dusk when many animals are most active can reduce the risk of potentially dangerous encounters. Also, be aware of wildlife birthing seasons, as a mother may be overly protective if you stumble across her young.

OUTDOOR SAFETY

No one wants to get hurt while enjoying the great outdoors, but injuries happen. Always carry safety gear. Pack a first aid kit with the basics and items geared toward your adventure. For example, a life jacket is essential when boating or spending time on the water. When hiking, you may need to stabilize a twisted ankle or a broken limb from a fall, so carry a splint on challenging hikes. Bringing a buddy along also is a safety measure. That way, they can seek help if you are injured, and vice versa.

20 years and building Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay celebrated a milestone of building hope for local families as they hosted their Annual General Meeting and 20th Anniversary celebration at Trinity United Church in Collingwood on June 22nd. In their history of long and dedicated community involvement, friends, families, volunteers and supporters were invited to reminisce over a potluck dinner to celebrate the past and look forward to the future. HOME AT LAST! The Baker's Bench is home! Now located in their brand spanking new store and bakery, at The Stonebridge Town Centre, at 321 Main Street in Wasaga Beach (ex EB Games). Owner, Amanda Sutton, has big plans for the future of her madefresh baking and, finally, a commercial kitchen of her own. Plans are already in motion for more staff, baking and more not-to-be-missed cookies, cakes and scones. The Baker's Bench is built on a vision of bringing customers, neighbours and friends the best fresh baking possible, without compromise. Just ask their many satisfied customers, or better yet, read the glowing comments on Facebook and Instagram. Regulars at The Baker's Bench know to buy their favourites early because when they're gone, they're gone, until owner and baker, Amanda, bakes them again. That's truly made fresh.

Amazing treats and Amanda herself is wonderful! If you are near Wasaga it’s worth a stop!! Allison W. Best butter tarts ever. Gail C.

The Baker's Bench takes its name from the heavy-duty worktable indispensable to bakers everywhere. These benches or tables withstand the weight of regular rolling, mixing, kneading and other food prep. The table top is typically made with either a heavy maple top that provides the insulation and warmth necessary for bread dough or a cool, smooth marble or stainless-steel top for pastry. You can be sure this table is the foundation of every delicious purchase you take home from Wasaga Beach's newest bakery. The Baker's Bench is Amanda's passion. Here, she creates freshly baked, real ingredient custom cakes, scrumptious scones, bountiful butter tarts, celebrated chocolate chip cookies and more. For Amanda, it made sense to follow her dreams to Wasaga Beach, a place filled with fond childhood memories of family summer visits. Now she has so many fans here; she couldn't possibly leave. Using social media, a cell phone, and the strength of her baking skills, Amanda has been selling her highly sought-after baked goods to those in the know for nearly three years. At farmer's markets, craft shows, temporary kitchens, and with the community's support, word of her baking talent spread far and wide. The last couple of years has brought The Baker's Bench a slew of superfans and repeat customers.

You can savour the delicious carry-out baked goods from The Baker's Bench by visiting 321 Main Street, calling 704-444-4803 or messaging them at @TheBakersBench. Make sure custom cakes and orders are placed a few weeks ahead of time to ensure full customer satisfaction. Fingers crossed, this summer will find Amanda greeting customers and fans in her new home, where she can add new products, new customers and more great fresh baking.

Very highly recommended. Try it, you won’t be disappointed. Susan D. thebakersbenchwasaga 321 Main St., Wasaga Beach

Champions of Community. Champions of Play.

WHAT MATTERS MOST

Jumpstart is more than just about getting kids active. It’s about giving kids from families in financial need the same chance to participate as their neighbours, their classmates and their friends. Whether it’s the chance to try out a new sport or to continue with a favourite one, no kids should be left out. As the owner/operator of your local Canadian Tire store here in Wasaga Beach it has been my honour to assist literally hundreds of our local kids get involved in sports and other activities with the assistance of Canadian Tire JumpStart Charities. The advantages of joining in sports and other activities go well beyond the rink or the playing field. We see improvements in selfesteem, creativity, social skills and even academics. JumpStart provides assistance with individual child grants for children and youth from ages 4-18. As well as funding for individuals they also have a Community Development Grant program to assist organizations with operational and administrative costs and help organizations sustain sports and recreational programming for kids aged 4-18 in financial need and youth with disabilities between the ages of 4-25. The Operational Support program for organizations provides funding for such things as rehiring staff who were laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic, equipment procurement or increased facility costs.

At the store level we don’t actually get to meet the kids we help, but we get the numbers of individuals and the type of activities they join and I can tell you it is quite impressive. The odd time we get a family come in to say thanks, and we surely appreciate that feedback. It’s important for you to know that 100% of the funds raised at our store and from this community stays right here. Canadian Tire Corporation covers all the administrative costs of the charity so a dollar raised is a dollar that goes right to a local kid. In an attempt to give the local JumpStart Chapter a boost we are going to hold a fundraising golf tournament and dinner on September 1st with 100% of the proceeds going to JumpStart thanks to the generosity of the owners of the Marlwood Golf & Country Club, Sandy and Alex Smardenka. The kindness and community support from this couple is astonishing. Canadian Tire Corporation will be matching a portion of the funds raised and there will be prizes from my store. So, now you know a little bit about JumpStart and about our great event to raise funds, so hope to see you there. HOME PROPERTY GUIDE

THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN HELP YOU WITH YOUR NEEDS INSIDE & OUT!

Safety first when power washing your home Harsh winters can take a toll on home exteriors. Dirt and grime can build up on exterior home surfaces throughout the winter, affecting the appearance of the siding of a home and outdoor entertaining areas.

The CDC urges homeowners who determine they can safely handle power washers to take these additional safety steps to make sure the process of cleaning their home exteriors goes smoothly.

Power washing is a great way to give a home a fresh, clean look. But, there’s more to power than buying or renting the right equipment and getting to work. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that there are many risks associated with using power washers. For instance, the CDC says

• Never point a pressure washer at yourself or others. • Do not attempt to push or move objects with spray from the washer. Turn the power washer off and move the obstruction if anything is in your way. • Never use a gasoline-powered washer in an enclosed space, which can increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. • Always test the ground fault circuit interrupter (circuit breaker or outlet) before using a pressure washer. • Always plug a properly grounded pressure washer into a properly grounded receptacle. • If an extension cord must be used, keep the pressure washer’s power cord out of and away from any standing water. Use a heavy-duty extension cord with components rated for use in wet locations. Keep both the power cord and extension cord connections as far away as possible from the item being washed and away from any water runoff. While power washing, periodically take note of the location of the extension cord connections to ensure they are not in a puddle. • Wear rubber-soled shoes that provide some insulation when using the pressure washer.

strong spray from power washers can cause serious wounds that initially seem minor. However, such wounds can lead to infection or disability if left untreated. In addition, if manufacturer safety instructions are not followed, electric shock can occur due to improper use. Homeowners intending to power wash their own homes should first determine if they’re physically capable of doing so. Power washers can be difficult for some people to control, so it’s imperative that homeowners honestly assess their physical abilities.

• Never cut or splice the pressure washer’s power cord or extension cords. • Never remove the grounding prong from the pressure washer’s power cord plug or the extension cord. • Pause the project if a circuit breaker is tripped. Always have a qualified electrician check the pressure washer for electrical problems after it has tripped a circuit breaker. • Never allow children to operate a pressure washer. Keep children at a safe distance when an adult is using a pressure washer.

Safety tips for individuals who live alone The number of households with a single person living alone has increased considerably. Statistics Canada says 13 percent of the Canadian population is comprised of single people living alone.

KITCHEN CABINET PAINTING

Various factors have contributed to the rise in the number of single people living alone. For example, delaying marriage is a growing trend. Today, the median age to get married for men is 30.4 years and 28.6 for women. In addition, more seniors are living longer and may be outliving spouses. Finally, some people simply opt not to get married, as neither men nor women are expected nor required to have a partner according to current societal norms.

Refinish existing cabinetry or install new doors, hardware, sinks, counters, even add to your existing cabinetry

With so many people living alone, a refresher course in solo safety could be in order. So here are some tips for single living.

Adopt a dog The general consensus is a dog is not only a companion but a safety precaution. Dogs are in tune with sounds and disturbances, which can alert owners if and when things are awry at home. Dogs, particularly those who bark when someone is at the door, are built-in alarm systems. In addition, criminals may be less likely to target a home where a dog is present, even if the dog isn’t perceived as aggressive.

Get to know your neighbours Singletons should make it a point to become familiar with their neighbours. This way, they can learn schedules and alert one another if something seems out of sorts. A good neighbour will check in on another person if they haven’t seen that person around in some time, which could help in the event of an injury or illness. Invest in smart technology Smart home technology can run the gamut from motion-activated cameras to remote-operated lights and thermostats. This enables the home to be safe and secure and even appear occupied when someone isn’t home.

Don’t advertise that you’re single Those who live alone should not make a point of advertising it. For example, list “Smith Residence” on a lobby mailbox in an apartment complex rather than a single name. Also, avoid telling too many people you’re single, as word can get around and it is impossible to know who will find out. That includes spreading word online through social media. Upgrade locks and doors Invest in more complex locks, deadbolts, and security doors to add an extra layer of security to a home. Such locks are only effective when inhabitants remember to lock their doors at night and when leaving their home.

Tech to make gardening more fun Many people take to the great outdoors to escape the increasingly tech-driven daily grind. Though that’s an understandable perspective, gardeners who aren’t deploying tech in their home gardens could be missing out on many benefits that could help their plants, flowers, and vegetables thrive.

Plant monitor Plant monitors are sensors that can keep tabs on the health of plants and deliver that information to gardeners. Plant monitors often connect to smartphones via Bluetooth and can provide information on the amount of heat, light and water a plant is getting. Sensors vary in price, and some will offer more information than others. But, these sensors are ideal for gardeners who love their plants but often forget to check up on them each day.

Garden camera Critters and insects are the banes of many gardeners’ existence. Determining what is nibbling away at flowers and plants isn’t always easy, as many animals are savvy enough to restrict their dining to the middle of the night and insects are so small they can be hard to spot. Garden cameras can serve as the watchmen of a garden, and gardeners can review footage to determine who is compromising all of their hard work. They can then use that knowledge to remedy the situation and give their plants a better chance to thrive. Weather station Even the most seasoned gardeners cannot document the conditions outside as effectively as a good weather sensor. Weather sensors track conditions such as temperature, relative humidity and air quality. This information can then be paired with irrigation devices to ensure plants get all the care they need to thrive throughout the season.

705.422.0114 Garden hub Avid gardeners have traditionally arranged for neighbours or loved ones to tend to their plants when they leave home for vacation or weekend getaways. Garden hubs can take care of that by pairing with smart irrigation systems that ensure plants are watered even when no one is home. Certain hubs even gather and analyze local weather conditions to develop a watering schedule to ensure plants thrive. These hubs aren’t just handy when on vacation; they can be great for gardeners who want to know things about their plants that are not apparent to the naked eye. People may see their gardens as welcoming respites from their devices. But, garden gadgets can help plants thrive and make time in the garden that much more enjoyable.

Poisonous plants to avoid around the house

HOME & PROPERTY

Homeowners must consider various factors when choosing plants to display in and around their homes. That’s because, despite their beauty, some plants are toxic to humans and animals. Avoiding potentially poisonous plants can prevent injuries and even deaths. Here’s a list of some plants homeowners may want to avoid. Rhododendron: Rhododendrons produce flower clusters that bloom in the spring. They also produce thick, glossy leaves that thrive in the fall and winter in many areas. However, if any part of the plant is swallowed, it can cause vomiting and slow the pulse. Lily-of-the-valley This popular plant grows close to the ground, blooming bell-shaped, sweet-smelling flowers. If large doses of the toxin in this plant are ingested, it can gradually slow the heart down and potentially prove fatal.

HOME PROPERTY GUIDE Looking for a local business to help you with your Home & Property needs? Dumb cane The houseplant dieffenbachia, commonly known as Dumb cane, adds tropical appeal indoors. The sap of the plant causes the tongue to burn and swell, enough to block off air to the throat. It can be fatal if ingested by both pets and humans. English ivy This go-to draping vine looks lovely cascading down from planters or shelving. While its toxins need to be ingested in large amounts to cause problems, English ivy can cause skin irritation, rash and fever, particularly after eating the berries.

Bittersweet nightshade Bittersweet nightshade grows as a weed on some properties. It’s particularly problematic for those who have pets or young kids because of the brightly coloured berries it produces. The highest level of toxicity comes from the berries.

Foxglove Foxgloves are among the most toxic specimens commonly grown on landscapes. They are widely coveted for their pink, purple and white bell-shaped flowers that grow in tall spires. They’re also deerand rabbit-resistant, making them especially popular. Unfortunately, however, foxgloves contain potent cardiac glycosides that can be lethal in high doses.

Philodendron Philodendrons are easy to care for and hearty. While not fatal, a bite of philodendron can irritate the skin and cause nausea and swelling of the mouth, throat and tongue. Similar effects occur with Pothos, another common and hearty houseplant. Yew shrubs The needlelike leaves of this shrub are toxic to humans and animals, as are the fleshy, bright red berries that grow toxic seeds. Kids may be tempted to pick and consume these bright berries. Palms Several different palm trees are poisonous to people and pets. Palms are an overlooked source of poisoning tragedies in warmer climates. Formosa palm, Sago palm, Queen Sago, and Cardboard palm are some of the varieties that can cause issues if ingested or allergic skin reactions if touched. When planning a landscape, work with a skilled garden expert to choose plants that will not be hazardous to family and pets.

Cottage succession planning Whether you call it a cottage, chalet, camp or cabin, it’s your family’s special place to relax and enjoy the great outdoors. For many families, it’s a place filled with generations of memories. Keeping the cottage in the family from one generation to the next isn’t always as easy as it might seem. There are many issues to consider, including how the taxes will be paid. Capital gains taxes If your cottage has been in the family for many years, the value has probably increased dramatically. This increase in value can result in a very large, taxable capital gain, which is triggered when you pass along the property to anyone other than your spouse, including your children. It is important to track capital expenses throughout your ownership of the cottage as these can be added to increase the adjusted cost base of the cottage, potentially reducing the capital gain. When you gift or sell your cottage to anyone other than your spouse (either during your lifetime or at the time of death), the government views it as having been sold at fair market value – a “deemed disposition.” The capital gain on this deemed disposition may be taxable if you are not able to or choose not to claim a principal residence exemption. The following illustrates the taxes owed on a cottage property that was purchased by a couple in 2000 and sold to their child in 2021. Original purchase price of cottage in 2000 = $400,000 Fair market value (FMV) in 2021 = $800,000 Renovations done (capital expense) in 2002 = $50,000

10126 Highway 26 East Unit 2, P.O. Box 191 Collingwood, ON

Adjusted cost base (ACB) = $450,000 Capital gains tax = ($800,000-$450,000) x 50% x 46% Taxes payable (50% inclusion rate and a 46% marginal tax rate) = $80,500 Consider ways to reduce taxes While taxes are inevitable, proper planning can help reduce the burden. Here are a few cottage succession planning strategies:

Under the Bridge The Black Bridge, the symbol of Clarksburg, has a new representation, 'Under the Bridge' by Derek Scott. This piece of original artwork was recently installed on the exterior wall of the Marsh Street Gallery. It depicts a view of the Black Bridge from Fireman's Park. While the scene was created and painted by Derek, the initial idea was raised by Cathie Gellatly and Dave Hodgetts, artists and fellow members of the collective at the Marsh Street Gallery. Derek became the maitre d'oeuvre, sharing his vision of a local landmark. He assembled the wooden canvas, created the painting and built the frame. Thunder offered support and painted much of the background frame. Marcel Rutte provided the resources necessary. This teamwork is reflective of the collaborative spirit amongst the artists of the Gallery. Under the Bridge is an example of the quality of the landscape and other Canadian art offered in the Marsh Street Gallery. It is also a great new contribution to the Downtown Clarksburg Revitalization initiative.

Maury has shown to be a friendly and affectionate dog who loves getting attention from people. He is very active so he would enjoy going for walks and playing outdoors. The GTHS team feel it’s best if Maury doesn’t share a home with smaller animals, so it’s recommended that he be the only pet in the household. Please note, Maury came to the GTHS with serious injuries to his neck. He underwent surgery and is recovering very well. With a little more time, Maury will be fully healed and back to normal. If you think this handsome dog would be a good fit for your home, please visit the GTHS and speak with one of the amazing Adoption Counsellors. The GTHS is open for adoptions from 12pm-4pm, every day of the week. To learn more about Maury, visit: gths.ca/animals-for-adoptions

Cancer Chat In January 1951, a poor unknown African American woman went to the emergency room at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, because she felt a knot in her belly. The hospital was the only one in the area that treated black patients. A mass was found on her cervix, and a biopsy was taken without permission. Over 70 years later, cells from that biopsy have circled the globe and are the most famous in biomedical research. The woman was Henrietta Lacks, born August 1, 1920, in Roanoke, Virginia. She is remembered as a small woman with hazel eyes, always wearing red nail polish and a neatly pleated skirt. Henrietta was married to David Day Lacks; they were tobacco farmers, and they had five children together. In the 1940s, the family relocated to Dundalk, Maryland, in Baltimore County. In 1950, Henrietta gave birth to her last child at Johns Hopkins Hospital, four and a half months before she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. In 1951, Henrietta Lacks was referred to Johns Hopkins, where it was established that she had a malignant epidermoid carcinoma of the cervix. A biopsy of the mass was taken. Lacks was treated with radium therapy as an inpatient and discharged a few days later. Lacks was instructed to return for X-ray treatment. On August 8, 1951, Lacks, who was only 31 years old, returned to Johns Hopkins for a routine treatment session. She asked to be admitted due to severe abdominal pain and remained at the hospital until her death on October 4, 1951. A partial autopsy showed that her cervical cancer had metastasized throughout her entire body. Lacks' biopsy eventually reached George Otto Gey, a cell biologist at Johns Hopkins Medical School. Gey had been trying to grow human cells on glass surfaces for years without any success. At this time in 1951, cells cultured in the laboratory only survived for a few days, which was not long enough to perform experiments. Using the cells taken from Lacks' biopsy, Gey quickly realized the longevity and hardiness of these cells and developed a new cell culture technique that permitted the cells to be divided multiple times without dying. Gey was able to create a "cell line" from Lacks' biopsy by isolating and repeatedly dividing a single cell. Cells grown in this way are immortalized, meaning they will survive indefinitely. A customary procedure for Gey's lab assistant was to name samples after the first two letters of a patient's first and last name. Thus, the cell line established from Henrietta Lacks' biopsy was named HeLa. In 1955, four years after Henrietta Lacks' death, HeLa cells were the first human cell line to be successfully cloned, representing a scientific achievement with profound

future benefits to medical research. HeLa cells became in high demand and were put into mass production. All HeLa cells are descended from Henrietta Lacks' tumour. It is estimated that the total number of HeLa cells propagated in cell culture exceeds the total number of cells in Henrietta Lacks' entire body. HeLa cells were mailed to scientists around the globe for research involving cancer, AIDS, the effects of radiation and toxic substances, gene mapping, mechanisms of papillomavirus, HPV vaccine, and countless other scientific endeavours. More than 100,000 scientific articles have been published about research done using HeLa cells, and that number has increased steadily. During her treatments, several biopsies were taken from Lacks' cervix without her permission or knowledge. It was common practice in the United States in the 1950s to biopsy cells from patient tumours, and consent was neither required nor sought. Communication between tissue donors and doctors was nonexistent, and patients were not told how the cells would be used. In 1981, the Common Rule was established, which enforces informed consent. The Common Rule ensures that doctors inform patients if they plan to use any details of the patient's case in research and offer the choice of which details are disclosed. Tissue samples are no longer named using donor initials but rather by code numbers to provide confidentiality. In 2021, Henrietta Lacks' family hired an attorney to seek compensation from over 100 pharmaceutical companies that profited from HeLa cells. Her estate sued to get past and future payments for the alleged, unauthorized, and widely known sale of HeLa cells. Currently, there are almost 11,000 patents involving HeLa cells. Lacks was buried in an unmarked grave on family land in Halifax County, Virginia. Her exact burial location is unknown, but the family believes it is within a few feet of her mother's grave, which was the only one in the family marked with a tombstone for decades. In 2010, a colleague of George Otto Gey, who knew the Lacks family, donated a headstone. The epitaph, written by Lacks' grandchildren, reads, "In loving memory of a phenomenal woman, wife, and mother who touched the lives of many. Here lies Henrietta Lacks (HeLa). Her immortal cells will continue to help mankind forever." Submitted by: Dr. Oliver Kent, Cancer researcher and Senior Scientist at adMare BioInnovations. BUSINESS PROFILE:

Dadswell Denture Clinic is a full-service denture provider specializing in complete dentures, partial dentures, implant-retained dentures, and immediate dentures. Originally from Scarborough, owner Kim Dadswell graduated in 1996 with Honours from George Brown College, where she studied Denturism. After graduating, Kim moved to Collingwood and was a Denturist Associate at the Reekie Clinic on Pine St. In 1998 she purchased the clinic and has been practicing at the same location independently as Dadswell Denture Clinic.

Kim has two incredible staff who are committed, enthusiastic, and go above and beyond to help keep everything running smoothly at the clinic. Sarah is the Office Assistant; her kind and gentle nature ensure that patients feel welcomed and comfortable at the clinic. Cindy is the Office Manager; she enjoys interacting with patients and strives to ensure that every visit is positive. Most Denturists’ fees are covered by dental plans, Veterans Affairs, Social Services, NIHB and other private insurance companies.

“I chose to be a Denturist because I have a creative outlet, and I enjoy helping others. Dentures replace missing teeth due to an injury, tooth decay, or gum disease and help improve the digestive system. Denturism allows me to make dentures for patients so that they can eat and speak with confidence as well as have a beautiful smile.” As a Denturist, Kim is constantly keeping upto-date with ever-changing technology and is continuously furthering her education and training by attending seminars, additional courses, and workshops to perfect and master the advanced techniques she uses daily in her practice. She is determined to give her patients the best fitting dentures and services. A big part of this is updating and upgrading the techniques, materials, and equipment used at the clinic. At Dadswell Denture Clinic, they have integrated digital dentures into their process, creating the highest quality dentures in their modern in-house lab. Their specialty is making personalized custom-fitted dentures. Having a lab on the premises also allows for repairs and relines as a same-day service without sending them out. This service is cost-effective for patients, and they appreciate having their dentures back promptly.

Replacing your natural teeth is more than trusting someone with your smile. Request an appointment for a free consultation to discuss a treatment plan for you to let your smile shine through! When asked what she enjoys the most about her job Kim replied, “I enjoy seeing the patient’s reaction after I have inserted their new dentures. I always take a ‘Before’ and ‘After’ picture of every patient. Sometimes it’s like a mini-makeover, and they get so excited. We see tears of joy in the clinic, and I get lots of hugs! We care about every patient!” Most of the patients at Dadswell are adults, although dentures are for anybody missing one or more of their teeth. They offer various services and types of dentures to satisfy each patient’s specific requirements Complete & Partial Dentures, Flexible Partials, Immediate Dentures, Implant Retained Dentures, 3D Digital Dentures, Relines, Repairs, Teeth Whitening, Cleaning Products, and Mouthguards.

Patients feel very comfortable with our friendly, knowledgeable staff. We are professional and treat everyone with respect by listening to their needs. We offer complimentary consultations with no obligations and provide written estimates to each patient. We provide quality products and fair pricing and work closely with local dentists to provide patients with the best treatment for them. Our patients are wonderful and loyal. I have patients that continue to book appointments with us regularly since I first started. Every day is a new challenge. Some patients might only be missing one tooth, whereas another patient might not have any teeth. Everyone has different needs and requirements. Upon examination, I must then determine the best possible treatment plan for them.”

Conserve fuel with vehicle maintenance and other tips Motorists know that 2022 has been a record-breaking year for fuel prices. Commuters, casual drivers, and weekend warriors feel the pinch at the pump. As a result, people across North America are taking whatever steps necessary to conserve fuel. Unfortunately, one of the considerations they may have overlooked is vehicle maintenance. Poor vehicle performance adversely affects fuel economy, so here's how to maintain a vehicle to conserve fuel. Proper tire inflation – Each decrease in tire pressure by 1 pound per square inch for four tires can decrease fuel economy by 0.2 percent. By keeping tires properly inflated, the average driver can improve gas mileage by as much as 3 percent. Drivers can consult their tire manufacturer's specifications for proper tire pressure. Use recommended motor oil – Engines require the right blend of products to work efficiently. Drivers can improve gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent simply by using the recommended grade of motor oil. Change the air filter – An engine's ability to produce power is directly related to its ability to draw air in. A clean air filter assists with that function, whereas a dirty filter will reduce engine power and fuel efficiency. Get a tune-up – Additional mechanical issues may affect vehicle performance and lead to excessive fuel consumption. A mechanic can run diagnostics on the vehicle and recommend things to repair or replace, such as spark plugs, ignition coils or faulty oxygen sensors. Treat fuel occasionally – Debris and moisture in the fuel tank can compromise combustion and impact performance. A fuel treatment product can clean out debris and dry up moisture to restore function and improve miles per gallon. Use the air conditioning sparingly – A vehicle's air conditioning unit uses power directly from the car's motor. Unfortunately, this means the vehicle consumes extra gas to keep the AC unit running, reducing fuel efficiency. Avoid idling – Idling uses gas without getting you anywhere, and it can add up quickly over the course of a day. So if you're going to be stopped for more than a minute or two, it's usually better to turn off your engine and save the gas for when you're actually on the move. Of course, this isn't always possible or convenient, but it's something to keep in mind when trying to stretch your gas budget. Remove excess cargo – Clear the trunk or cargo area of extra items that can weigh down the vehicle, requiring more power to move it. Any heavy load will negatively affect mileage. Keeping a vehicle in top form can improve fuel economy, which can be especially beneficial during soaring fuel costs.

FROM OIL CHANGES TO TIRE SALES WE'LL HAVE YOU ON THE ROAD IN NO TIME With a small staff of highly skilled technicians, and the most advanced diagnostic and repair tools available, we are able to provide you a level of service and quality that will meet your highest expectations.

What’s behind the noises your car might be making Few things can be as unsettling when behind the wheel as a sudden noise. Noises coming from a car can indicate various issues, which is why such sounds tend to differ. Quickly identifying what’s behind car noises can make for safer driving and potentially save drivers substantial amounts of money. Noise: Rattling coins Problem: Loose lug nut in a hub cap This noise can be loud and unsettling, but the good news is that it’s often a simple fix if addressed immediately. A noise that sounds like coins rattling around in a dryer is likely a loose lug nut in a hubcap. The lug nut might have become loose if a wheel was not tightened sufficiently after a recent maintenance appointment or even if drivers changed a tire on their own. The longer drivers wait to address this, the more dangerous and costly it could become, as it could have an effect on the wheel bearings. However, if handled promptly, the damage is likely minimal.

FEATURING:

2022 DODGE RAM LTD

Noise: Squealing on start-up Problem: Issue with the serpentine belt A squealing noise at start-up is among the more annoying noises a driver can hear. This sound often indicates a worn or damaged serpentine belt, which connects the crankshaft to the alternator, power steering and additional components. Thankfully, a worn-down serpentine belt is a relatively inexpensive repair, though it must be addressed promptly. Squealing at startup also could indicate a loose tensioner, designed to keep the serpentine belt at a certain tightness and tension, or wear and tear to the belt due to parking outside. These issues can be addressed by readjusting or replacing the tensioner or replacing the serpentine belt, particularly if the part is old.

bluemountainchrysler.com Noise: Engine knocking Problem: Various issues A knocking noise from the engine typically sounds like repeated tapping. The noise will often become louder as the vehicle accelerates. Various issues can be behind the knocking sound, and drivers should avoid self-diagnosing the problem, even if they’ve experienced it in the past with the same or a different vehicle. For example, some drivers hear knocking because they’re using 87 octane fuel instead of the high-performance and more expensive fuel the owner’s manual recommends (this could be a common problem in recent months given the meteoric rise in fuel prices). Another potential cause of engine knock could be problems with the pistons or crankshaft. Regardless of what’s causing engine knocking, drivers are urged to take their vehicle to a mechanic promptly, as the cost of repairs is likely to rise the longer knocking goes untreated.

GEORGIAN LIFE • AUGUST 2022

BUSINESS PROFILE:

Let’s get Saucy! Saucy Pasta and Gourmet Foods began with a love of Italian cooking. Founder, Rick Gillman, evolved his passion for Italian cooking into an obsession, learning the nuances of the traditional recipes he lovingly sourced from Italy and around the globe. His love of premium and novel ingredients results in a unique fusion of traditional and modern Italian flavours.

Many varieties of sauces are available: Vegetarian, Rosé, Beef Bolognese, Chicken Breast Cacciatore, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Red Pepper Rose, Tracy’s Arrabbiata, Puttanesca, Caper & Kalamata, and Heretic Spirits A la Vodka - as well as Alfredo and Pesto, three Vegan and eight Vegetarian options - all Gluten Free.

After beginning Saucy Pasta in 2014 and closing due to health reasons, the seed was already planted. Rick and Tracy recognized the rapidly changing restaurant landscape during the pandemic and saw an opportunity to create a new model; Saucy Artisan Pasta was born. Their first location opened in Thornbury in 2020. After selling out almost daily, Tracy and Rick decided to scale up to meet both the demand of their regular clientelle and the many requests from local restaurants and stores interested in carrying their quality pasta. As a result, Saucy Artisan Pasta’s new flagship store and Pasta Factory opened in Cranberry Mews in Collingwood in the winter of 2021.

Other specialties include in-house fresh baked daily demi-baguettes and Rosemary Foccacia, made-from-scratch Tiramisu, Fresh Lobster and Ricotta Cannelloni, Jumbo Stuffed Spinach and Ricotta or Beef Stuffed Shells, Lemon Biscotti, Fresh Shaved Parmesan Reggiano, Brie/Walnut/Pear Ravioli and much, much more. Selections change daily. Hot take-out food is coming to the menu this summer. Saucy Pasta is also the exclusive regional distributor of Magiccann Pain relief topicals.

Welcome, Saucy Pasta 2.0

Saucy Pasta offers a vast array of over 30 varieties of fresh pasta shapes and flavour infusions, made fresh daily, ranging from traditional to unique and novel. They create a dozen different sauces - made from fresh milled tomatoes - not a concentrate like most restaurants use. Saucy creates handmade ravioli, cannelloni, and four varieties of lasagna, assembled daily from scratch.
