Percy Main Amateurs v Blyth Town Newcastle Building Society Premier Division 19th September 2015

View From‌The Main Good afternoon and welcome to Purvis Park for today's Northern Alliance Premier division fixture between Percy Main and last season's league champions and this season's league leaders, Blyth Town who will be looking to further pursue their dream of promotion to the Northern league at the end of the current campaign. Blyth have a large squad with many quality players including our former manager Jason Ritchie who held the reins between 2008-2011 and former North Shields forward Rob Nolan and they have yet to taste defeat this season, so if ever there's a stern test for The Main, then this is it! Hopefully if you're reading this you will not have been caught out by the unusual 12 noon kick off time! I'm sure you will all be aware of the little matter of the North Tyneside Derby or El Classico along at the Daren Persson Stadium as North Shields entertain Whitley Bay, which will get underway at 3pm this afternoon. A NE29 double header seems to appeal to quite a few and we hope to welcome a good deal of Shields fans and a smattering of ground hoppers to cheer us on. At Percy Main by the time we pay for our normal home match day expenses such as laundry, post match hospitality, match officials and the like, they normally outstrip what we can take in by means of the gate, football cards and the tea bar, by some way, so hopefully we may actually make a few quid today! We will of course reciprocate a little later this afternoon and hope that both our sides have reasons to celebrate a little later! A special word about Blyth Town as well who kindly agreed to bring the kick off forward from it's normal 2:30pm slot to accommodate our request. They have nothing to gain from this and may in fact have to reckon without one or two players, should work or other commitments get in the way, so it's nice when clubs can help out one another from time to time! Enjoy the game today. Norman de Bruin

View From...The Gaffer Whatever the result today will be some occasion. Blyth have been the best side in the Alliance for the last few years by far and if this seasons results are anything to go by this year is no different. The early kick off time will allow one or two of our friends from North Shields to come along and support us to add to the atmosphere. We will also have at least five players available who weren’t involved last week. The next few weeks will be fascinating for Danny, Dave and I. Winter training is back in full swing and we will really start to see who is willing to do what it takes for us to kick on this season. I love the people in the squad and I believe completely in their talent. And sometimes it takes a little more to get the rewards we all want. The coming months will be about grit, determination and team spirit. And we need to start today. Here’s to a great game. Nuge

Match report ….. Saturday September 12th '15 Northern Alliance Challenge Cup Percy Main 1 AFC Newbiggin 2

7 days previous, Percy Main had gone out of the league cup at the hands of Seaton Delaval and could perhaps consider themselves unfortunate to do so, while The Villagers latest run out saw their interest ended in the Challenge cup, following a performance which came up short against a well drilled Newbiggin side. Once again The Main found themselves shorn of key players due to injury, suspension and unavailability, with the management team seemingly unable to field a settled side from one week to the next, being a telling factor in the side's early season showings. The incessant morning's rain had thankfully more or less abated by kick off time to the relief of another sizeable crowd, which included a healthy contingent from Newbiggin, but a downpour at the start of the second half made the Purvis Park surface very slippery and ultimately, which frustratingly for The Villagers, played a vital and deciding factor in the visitors second and winning goal which came via the penalty spot. Both clubs were promoted from the Northern Alliance First Division at the end of last season, The Main as champions, while Newbiggin, who had reformed only 4 years ago in the North Northumberland league and had been promoted in each of their previous campaigns, have definitely adapted to life in the league's top tier better than The Main as they currently sit around the mid table mark. continued —————>

Last season's league game between the sides at Purvis Park had also resulted in a 2-1 success for Newbiggin with Mark Humble scoring first for the visitors and history was to repeat itself as Humble who had seen an early effort touched around the post by Rob Rodgerson in the Percy Main goal, opened the scoring for the visitors on 14 minutes as he slotted home from Reece Farrell's low centre, to maintain The Main's frustrating habit of conceding early goals this season. It was Percy Main who were next to show as Dean Ellis fired a free kick, awarded for a foul on the hard working Stew Wright just past the post and Ant Ridley fired over, while the visitors threatened once more as Wright was dispossessed and John Bone shot just over the angle from 25 yards. As play swung each way it was The Main who were next to register and drew level on 36 minutes with a great move as Graeme Smith in midfield, sprayed the ball diagonnally to the right side of the area for Jorge Bollado who ran on and squared for Ridley who converted from close range. As half time approached, it was the visitors who came closest to adding to the scoring as Brett Aisbett made ground down the left and centred low for the onrushing Humble, who slid in on goal but was unable to get the vital touch. Rodgerson kept the visitors at bay once more, saving from Aisbett who threatened down the left, while Bone and Humble once more went close before The Villagers Wright volleyed over from Jack Armstrong's cross. The deciding goal came on 74 minutes and owed a great deal to the elements as the lively Aisbett advanced into the right side of the area, checked back and the sliding Wayne McDine made contact with the forward's legs, Despite objections from the home side, a penalty was awarded and Farrell duly obliged from the spot. Despite their best efforts, neither side found themselves able to add to their respective tallies during the closing minutes, substitute Kieran Rudd saw his goal bound shot blocked for The Main, while at the other end Aisbett fastened onto a long clearance from defence and finding himself in the clear, fired wide. There was a suspicion of a push in the area, but this time no penalty was given.

Northern Alliance Premier Division League Table

Back in the day..5 years ago Saturday September 18th '10 League Challenge Cup, 1st Round Percy Main 3 Carlisle City 1 (AET) On a gloriously sunny afternoon at Purvis Park, Percy Main Amateurs advanced to the quarter finals of the Northern Alliance Challenge Cup, a competition reserved exclusively for Premier Division sides, after a hard fought but ultimately exhilarating 3-1 victory after 120 minutes of nip and tuck football in front of a large and lively crowd. If the Main are to repeat last season's feat of winning their divisional cup, having secured the Northern Alliance Combination Cup as a first division side, they will be required to do it the hard way, having already been required to travel to Ponteland United to defeat the consistently dangerous Leisure Centre outfit. However, playing quality sides is the reward and requirement for Jason Ritchie's side in their début season in the top flight. Such facts were brought home to Main a month ago when they travelled across the A69 with a depleted squad, to come back from Carlisle City's Sheepmount home with a courageous 1-0 win against all the odds. Today, it seemed as if the Cumbrians were anxious to exorcise the demons occasioned by that result and when they took the lead with 20 minutes remaining, it seemed as if the visitors would edge the contest, but the Main proved that last season's legendary never say die attitude is being maintained, by storming back to equalise almost immediately and then take the tie in extra time. However, there were a full two hours of football to be played before the result was a certainty. continued —————>

The game began with Jason Ritchie almost calamitously scoring an own goal when a miscued clearance nearly lobbed Rob Rodgerson in the Main goal. This danger averted, the Main went up the other end and Michael Bowman almost profited from indecision in the Carlisle area, but put his shot in to keeper Twentyman's gloves, which was possibly the only secure piece of handling the visiting custodian displayed all game. Bowman was again involved after 7 minutes, dispossessing John Proudfoot, then haring down on goal, before blasting just wide of Twentyman's back post from the angle of the box. If the Villagers centre forward was putting in an effective shift, the same was true of Carlisle's gifted striker Lee Otway. The former Gilford Park man turned magnificently on the edge of the box and shot low in to the corner, only for Rodgerson to spread himself superbly to turn the ball away for a corner. The striking baton was passed back to Bowman who then rattled Twentyman's bar with a ferocious effort from 20 yards with the City keeper an anxious spectator as the ball flew past him. It was the closest either side were to come to a goal in the opening period, though Bowman nearly turned provider by setting up Ashley Smyth on his full début, but lively front-man was crowded out at the crucial moment. In the final play of the half Twentyman, showing signs of the dropsy that was to affect his second half showing, juggled a routine catch from a Malcolm Morien free kick just over the bar and on to the roof of the net. Early in the second half, Twentyman dropped a simple catch from a Ritchie cross at the feet of Luc Coiffait, but the Main winger hit the ball directly at the Carlisle keeper. The home side continued to press and on 52 minutes Morien sent a fizzing drive that whistled inches the wrong side of the upright, though the Cumbrians showed attacking intent of their own when substitute Murphy put a good effort just wide.

continued —————>

After all this good football, Percy Main decided to use the elements and Rob Rodgerson launched an enormous wind-assisted goal kick that dropped an inch in front of an onrushing Morien and dropped to safety. From the restart, Carlisle took the lead in somewhat controversial circumstances as Chris Locke appeared to twice be fouled in the build up that led to James Hartley finishing emphatically from the left hand side of the area. As a lesson in determination and good sportsmanship, the Percy Main response to falling behind should be both highlighted and warmly applauded. Less than a minute later, Twentyman's latest catastrophe with a cross saw Dean Ellis nod home from 6 yards. It was a deserved goal for the popular midfielder, who thoroughly enjoyed his first strike in claret and blue and it marked the end of Carlisle as a threat in this game as away heads went down in the wake of volleys of unwarranted invective from the away dug out. While Main could have won it in normal time, firstly through the perennially dangerous penalty box predator Tony Browell volleying inches wide and secondly as Bowman just failed to capitalise on a Twentyman handling error, there was no doubt as to the eventual outcome once extra time began. The extra thirty minutes began with Twentyman redeeming himself partly with a great save from Shaun Wilkinson, who had displayed his usual stamina by haring down the line and unleashing a superb shot. It was only a temporary respite as the game swung decisively Main's way when Morien slipped a glorious Michael Bowman pass under Twentyman for the winner. Lee Otway had the chance to tie things up, but just failed to control the ball in the area, much to the chagrin of his manager, who was further discomfited on 116 minutes when Morien sealed things with a precise header from Jason Ritchie's accurate corner. In short, the best team won.

View From...The Local Scene It was another good win for Gateshead last Saturday, who triumphed 2-1 at Eastleigh to move into third spot in the National league (formerly known as the Conference) behind Forest Green and Wrexham and in front of 3264 thanks to goals from Matty Pattinson and Danny Johnson. There is of course only one automatic promotion slot to the Football League and that goes to the National league champions, but the sides who finish from 2nd to 5th have the chance to play off to join the champions in the higher echelon the following season. I saw The Heed lose 4-1 at home to Tranmere during he opening week of the season and they were decidedly second best, but give Malcolm Crosby his due, the side have rallied and appear to be genuine promotion contenders. Gateshead continued their run on Tuesday night when second placed Wrexham were beaten 2-1 at the International Stadium, with Josh Gillies and Ryan Bowman doing the damage, the result took the Tynesiders above Wrexham and into second spot. Another Gateshead team to look out for is their 'A' side who are enjoying their first ever season in the Northern Alliance and currently top the second division with a 100% record from their 9 league games to date and with 66 goals scored as well! Last Saturday they posted a 9-1 success over Willington Quay Saints, so the goal rush has not shown any signs of drying up. Undoubtedly the top game in the region last week was the FA Cup 1st round tie at the Brewery Field as Evostick First Division promotion hopefuls Spennymoor Town took on Blyth Spartans who led the Premier division of the same league. Supporters were urged to 'turn up early and park considerately' presumably they did and most of them would have gone home happy as the home side recorded a shock 2-1 win thanks to Nathan Fisher and Liam Henderson, Stephen Turnbull netted from the spot for Blyth in what was little more than a consolation, despite their dominance throughout. continued —————>

Other cup action saw a rejuvenated Washington side despatch Runcorn Linnets 1-0 at Nissan, Consett saw off North West Counties side Colne, Whitley Bay gained a creditable draw in Derbyshire at Matlock Town to force a midweek replay, which went to extra time with the game tied at 2-2 and Whitley down to 9 men following the dismissals of Robbie Williamson and Adam Shanks. Matlock went 3-2 up and Whitley looked as though they were heading out of the competition - or so it seemed. Incredibly Chris Reid equalised from a corner in the 120th minute and Whitley went thorough 4-2 on penalties. Elsewhere, Dunston were defeated 5-2 at Kendal Town who had themselves accounted for North Shields at the previous stage in the competition. Northern League action saw last season's champions Marske United beat North Shields 2-1, after Dean Holmes had given The Robins the lead, Bedlington Terriers earned a much needed win over Durham City by the same margin to ease their worries near the wrong end of the table, Â West Allotment went down 3-1 at Morpeth and Newcastle Benfield lost by the same scoreline at home to Bishop Aukland. Chester le Street, Team Northumbria and Darlington RA are making the early running at the top of the second division and of the 3, only Darlington failed to win last Saturday as they drew 1-1 with Willington. Chester narrowly accounted for Ryton at Kingsley Park and free scoring Team North saw off the challenge of Esh Winning thanks to 4 first half goals without reply.

Blyth Town

Blyth Town were formed in February 1995 as a junior football club with 3 teams – U10, 11 and 13 boys. In 1996 the club expanded to 5 teams, again, all boys. Each year thereafter the club grew, taking the oldest team all the way through to U18 in the 2000/01 season. In 1999 a girls section was established which has also grown each year.
The adult section was launched in 2002/03 – both men and ladies – The Northern Alliance League for the men and the Northern Ladies League for the girls. All of the 2001/02 U18 boys’ team, once again, came together to play under the Blyth Town banner and in their very first season they were Champions of the Northern Alliance 2nd division. The young ladies team (avg. age of 14/15) finished
5th in their league, narrowly missing promotion. However,
promotion was gained by the ladies in the 2003/04 season.
The adult section was expanded in 04/05 with the addition
of a ladies development team. The same development
scenario was implemented for the men’s section and the
under 18/19 of 04/05 were entered into the Tyneside
Amateur League. At the end of the season both the
ladies and men’s first teams achieved their 2nd
 promotion.
With funding from a development fund and a
successful Football Foundation bid, a £1M extensive
refurbishment and development of the South Newsham
facilities was handed over to the Club in December 2007. At last
the club had a permanent home where they could continue
to grow and the adult teams could progress through
the league pyramid system. A facility where all
the teams could train, play and even socialise in
one location. The men’s first team finished the
12/13 season in their highest ever position of 2nd in
the Northern Alliance Premier following up with league
titles in the 13/14 & 14/15 seasons, certainly
something for the youngsters to aspire to.
The next step is the Northern League, hopefully in the
 not too distant future.
Blyth Town currently run 21 teams – U6 boys to men and
U8 girls to ladies. Throughout the growth of the club high
standards have been maintained and because of this, and
the fact that the club provides football from age 4 to
adult, in December 2002 the club received the accolade
of ‘Community Club’ from the F.A. - Blyth Town are
proud to have been the first club in the County to
receive this recognition – at the time of receiving the
award only 180 clubs had achieved the status out of
 some 43,000+ nationwide.

Last Time …..The Two Clubs Met Saturday August 17th '13 Northern Alliance Premier Division Percy Main 2 Blyth Town 3

Percy Main succumbed to Blyth Town by the odd goal in 5 in an eventful game at Purvis Park, however the home faithful were rewarded and encouraged by a much improved Villagers performance following disappointing early season back to back defeats against newly promoted sides, Wallington and Red House Farm. Blyth had finished their 2012-13 campaign as runners up to eventual champions and promoted Heaton Stannington and with a host of summer signings including former Percy Main players Ian Lee, Malcolm Morien, Scott Pocklington and former player/manager Jason Ritchie in their starting X1, were already being tipped by many, to be challenging for honours as the season progresses. The game played out against the predicted threat of rain turned out to be a fine advert for Northern Alliance football and although the visitors carved out the greater number of goalscoring opportunities, Percy Main caused countless problems themselves and the visitors could be grateful for goalkeeper Mathew Crook's unbelievable save from Ryan Laws on the hour with the game deadlocked at 2-2, which may have ultimately changed the course of the game. The sizeable crowd had barely taken their places when The Main forged themselves into a surprise early lead. Laws created space and raced away down the left and his measured ball into Joe Betts was met superbly by the centre forward who tucked the ball under the dive of the advancing Crook. Regular centre halves James Leggett and Micky Haley were both missing for The Villagers and deputees Connor Hale and match day signing Michael Carangelo soon found themselves under scrutiny by the visitors strike force as firstly Pocklington sent a low effort just past the post and Morien headed over when well placed.

Parity was restored on 21 minutes as another of the former home contingent stepped up to the breach. This time it was the turn of Ritchie whose trademark deep free kick so often seen in the past in Percy Main colours, saw David Atkinson steal in at the far post to level. 8 minutes later the omens didn't look good for The Main and Blyth found themselves in front as Pocklington was upended in the area and Atkinson despatched the resultant spot kick. Connor Andrews was close to adding a third soon after but his cross cum shot just evaded the on rushing Ian Lee. As the half drew to a close it was the home side who were on the ascendancy, Redmond Cockburn who had signed for the Villagers on a transfer from Blyth last season and had a superb game in his side's midfield. His through ball down the middle on 36 minutes released Chris Bell and his fizzing goalbound effort was acrobatically tipped to safety by Crook. Moments later, Bell was impeded on the edge of the area and Laws unable to take advantage of the referee's play on decision by blazing over the bar and Darren Walsh's hot from distance was well held by Crook. Following the restart Rob Rodgerson in the home goal cleared from the feet of Morien and Bell forced Crook to do the same at the other end following a jinking run, but it was Percy Main who were celebrating again as substitute Chris Laidlaw on for the injured Walsh, centred low from the right and Bell slotted home. Play then swung to the other end as Pocklington threatened once more for Blyth, firing into the side netting and David Robinson drove the ball across the face of goal to which none of his team mates were able to get on the end of. With the game hanging in the balance, Laws sent over a spectacular overhead kick some 20 yards from goal which appeared as if it was destined for the top corner of the net, but Crook somehow managed to get up and tip the ball against the underside of the crossbar and the Blyth defence were able to clear to safety. Sadly for Percy Main, with quarter of an hour remaining, the winning goal was to come at the other end and in perhaps controversial circumstances as well. A low cross was fired into the centre from the right wing and the sliding and falling Cockburn was adjudged to have handled. Following protests by the home side the referee upheld the penalty decision and Atkinson duly netted his second spot kick and completed his hat trick. There were still chances at either end as Blyth looked to wrap things up as Chris Lisle was thwarted by the legs of Rodgerson and Daniel Young was narrowly off target, while Laidlaw's strike at Crook's goal whistled just past the upright.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF PMAFC Percy Main Amateurs were formed in the 1919-1920 season by ex servicemen returning from World War 1, playing in the Northern Amateur League and finished their first season as league champions, also lifting the Northumberland Minor Cup - the ground was then known as Middle Row Park as reference to three sets of cottages on the site, Low Row, Middle Row and High Row.

The club also won the Championship on 4 consecutive seasons between 1925-1928. During the 1929-30 campaign, Percy Main reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Amateur Cup, defeating then notable opponents Cleethorpes Town, Rawmarsh Welfare and Yorkshire Amateurs before going down to eventual finalists Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic - this game produced The Main's share of the gate as a huge £105, 12 shillings and 9d!

Between 1931 and the War years the club played in the Tyneside Senior League before rejoining the Northern Amateur League.

The Villagers subsequently joined the Northern Alliance in 1968 and enjoyed Northumberland Amateur Cup success in 1968,1970 & 1971 also lifting the Northern Alliance League Cup by beating Bedlington Terriers at St James Park the following season.

In 1978 The Villagers won the Northumberland Senior Bowl for the first time with a 1-0 win over West Allotment at North Shields Appleby Park ground.

The Northern Alliance League Championship was won in consecutive seasons 1981 and 1982 while the club finished runners up in 1983.

Percy Main were relegated to Division 1 in 1992, but were promoted as champions in 1998-99 and the club went on to lift the League Cup in their first season back in the top flight.

In 2004 The Villagers ended their Premier League season in fourth place and won the Northumberland Bowl once more, defeating Cramlington Town at Whitley Park, but two years later the team were relegated.

The Village Ground was renamed Purvis Park in 1996 in recognition of 50 years dedicated service by the late Alan Purvis as player, secretary and chairman.
