Previous Match Report Pt1 Saturday 03/01/15 | Northern Alliance Premier Division | Cullercoats 2 Percy Main 5 Following the mini Christmas break, free scoring Percy Main Amateurs gained another vital win at third placed Cullercoats in the Northern Alliance North Tyneside derby, but showed great strength of character after being forced to come from behind as their hosts started the stronger and raced into an early 2-0 lead with barely a quarter of the game played. The scoreline meant that The Main have now hit 22 goals from their last 5 games, all of which have gone the way of the Purvis Park side, who have now opened up a 14 point gap at the top of the Northern Alliance First Division table. Having faced each other twice at Links Avenue since Cullercoats rejoined the league in 2006, Percy Main were still to record a win on their hosts soil. Added to that, The Main's narrow 2-1 home win in the corresponding league game over Cullercoats back in August thanks to goals from Dan Sneap and Sam Thompson, pointed to another close fought game. For their part, Percy Main's squad included 5 players who have represented Cullercoats in the recent past, while Richard Nugent and Danny Nelson from the management team had both held similar connections with the home side. Cullercoats included John Amos in their line up, a centre forward who was instrumental during The Main last successful promotion season during the 2009-10 campaign and netted his side's second goal. The game played in front of a sizeable crowd on the first Saturday of 2015, saw Cullercoats race out of the blocks and shock The Villagers with a goal on 8 minutes. Kevin Watler just outside the area played in Dean McCarthy who hit the post, but his follow up effort found the net despite the desperate attentions of James Leggett on the line. Encouraged by their start, Cullercoats defender Mitchell Elliot then made a great last ditch challenge to thwart Sam Thompson bearing down on goal, but the home side pressed and doubled their lead as McCarthy turned provider for Amos, who produced a clinical finish to perfectly loft the ball over the head of Rob Rodgerson in the visitors goal from the edge of the area. Stung into action, Ant Ridley shot over the crossbar for The Main, before the referee adjudged that Thompson had been held back in the area on 26 minutes following a cunning ball in by Davey Surrey. Thompson himself stepped up to make no mistake from the resultant penalty and half the deficit to encourage the visiting contingent.

Previous Match Report Pt2 Saturday 03/01/15 | Northern Alliance Premier Division | Cullercoats 2 Percy Main 5 Chances came and went at both ends as Brian Gosling fired into the side netting for the home side, Watler had an effort just past the upright, while The Main's Joe Betts played in by Graham Allen delayed and the danger was cleared. However Betts who put in a superb shift for Percy Main, atoned on 37 minutes as Surrey touched on a free kick 20 yards from goal and Betts produced a delightful finish to evade the assembled wall and give goalkeeper Dean Avery no chance. (Thankfully Surrey's contribution had been noted in the book and an assist was credited) Only 2 minutes later The Main went in front for the first time in the afternoon with Surrey instrumental once more as his measured pass from midfield found Chris Laidlaw down the right flank who outpaced the home defence, chipped Avery on the by line and the on rushing Thompson was on hand to touch the ball home from close range. Cullercoats spurned a decent chance at the start of the second half as Johnny Ranson found Gosling whose shot was parried by Rodgerson, but McCarthy following up, blazed over. Both goalkeepers were called into action as Avery, a recent signing from Wooler cleared from the feet of Ryan Laws and Rodgerson proved his worth to deny John Watson and McCarthy, but Percy Main went further in front on 55 minutes as Thompson with 2 goals to his name, cleverly made space for Laws to run on and round the home goalkeeper to give The Villagers a bit breathing space. Percy Main were then guilty of missed chances which would have put the game out of sight, Laidlaw fired into the side netting, Betts stung the palms of Avery while Leggett and Thompson also went close. Cullercoats for their party kept plugging away and rattled the crossbar from Chris Connor's corner, while Andy McCay's shot was just the wrong side of the post. Jorge Bollado brought another save from Avery (you can read all about him on page 70 of today's Sunday Sun!) before Percy Main wrapped up the scoring with a 5th deep into injury time as Steve Hart crossed from the left for Dan Sneap to convert. Both were among the former Cullercoats contingent and had taken to the field as late substitutes during the closing minutes.

As we enter the final 5 games of the season many may be looking forward to the break but I wish it was September. Despite the results still not going our way there is a growing feeling in the dressing room that the current squad of players are becoming a team. So much has changed over the last three or four months. Some players left soon after Chris and I joined, we have tried to bring in some new blood and experience. Some signings have been a success some haven’t. What I am sure of is that the squad that takes to the field against Wallington today will give their all; for themselves, for the club, for the committee and for each other. It's easy to bring a group of players together it is more difficult to build a team and culture that can compete at this level. I want to give huge credit to the lads who have shown great commitment through a tough spell to build a positive atmosphere in the dressing room. Before the game last week I asked the lads to focus on confidence. Afterwards I asked them to focus on possibility. If we go into todays game with these things in mind, then who knows what we can achieve.

View From...The Stands Good afternoon and welcome to today's Northern Alliance Premier Division match between Percy Main and Wallington in what is to be our penultimate home game of the season. As usual, we would like to especially welcome all those associated with our visitors today, hope they enjoy their short stay with us and have a safe journey home after the match. Wallington were promoted to the Alliance's top division at the end of last season as champions, when they just pipped Red House farm by a point and will be happy at how their side has adapted to life in the Premier Division. They of course made the best possibles start to their league campaign by beating The Main 4-0 on the opening day of the season , thanks to goals from Jordan Nellis (2) Josh Gilmartin and Sam Walton. Nellis and Walton have subsequently gone on to net 26 goals between them during the current campaign, that's more than our entire league total! That game at Walllington's scenic Oakford Park ground on August 10th wasn't exactly the start that we were looking for mind! Having said that the Greens have slipped a bit of late and have lost their last three games against Walker Central, Northbank and Blyth Town, who ran up a convincing 5-0 winners on Wallington's turf last weekend. Perhaps Blyth were looking to avenge Wallington's 4-1 win at South Newsham earlier in the season?

A BRIEF HISTORY OF PMAFC Percy Main Amateurs were formed in the 1919-1920 season by ex servicemen returning from World War 1, playing in the Northern Amateur League and finished their first season as league champions, also lifting the Northumberland Minor Cup - the ground was then known as Middle Row Park as reference to three sets of cottages on the site, Low Row, Middle Row and High Row.

The club also won the Championship on 4 consecutive seasons between 1925-1928. During the 1929-30 campaign, Percy Main reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Amateur Cup, defeating then notable opponents Cleethorpes Town, Rawmarsh Welfare and Yorkshire Amateurs before going down to eventual finalists Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic - this game produced The Main's share of the gate as a huge £105, 12 shillings and 9d!

Between 1931 and the War years the club played in the Tyneside Senior League before rejoining the Northern Amateur League.

The Villagers subsequently joined the Northern Alliance in 1968 and enjoyed Northumberland Amateur Cup success in 1968,1970 & 1971 also lifting the Northern Alliance League Cup by beating Bedlington Terriers at St James Park the following season.

In 1978 The Villagers won the Northumberland Senior Bowl for the first time with a 1-0 win over West Allotment at North Shields Appleby Park ground.

The Northern Alliance League Championship was won in consecutive seasons 1981 and 1982 while the club finished runners up in 1983.

Percy Main were relegated to Division 1 in 1992, but were promoted as champions in 1998-99 and the club went on to lift the League Cup in their first season back in the top flight.

In 2004 The Villagers ended their Premier League season in fourth place and won the Northumberland Bowl once more, defeating Cramlington Town at Whitley Park, but two years later the team were relegated.

The Village Ground was renamed Purvis Park in 1996 in recognition of 50 years dedicated service by the late Alan Purvis as player, secretary and chairman.
