Dear Friends and Supporters,

In spite of last year’s organizational challenges, our students thrived. A 5-year longitudinal study conducted by Harder+Co validated our program outcomes, showing positive impact on high school graduation rates as well as college enrollment and persistence rates versus comparison groups. In 2018 we placed a record number of students into paid professional internships at 32 companies. We’ve been inspired by current young professionals like Joseph (featured on page 4), who is benefiting from a life-changing experience and supportive mentors while contributing to the business success of Kirkland & Ellis. And we’ve been delighted to reconnect with program alumni like Janessa (featured on page 5), who is taking what she learned at her Salesforce internship to help her as she navigates college. Watching students like Joseph and Janessa take full advantage of their work-based learning opportunities is not only gratifying, but inspires us to do more. As 2019 unfolds, we urge you to think about what doors of opportunity you might help open this year. Whether providing more internships at your company, supervising and mentoring an additional young professional at work, guiding a student from your school to our program, or providing the financial support necessary to grow our program, there is an important role for us all. We thank you in advance for your continued support of the students and mission of Genesys Works.

OPPORTUNITY

2018 was a challenging year for our Bay Area program. A confluence of factors, including leadership transitions, a lack of focus on fundraising, and an unsustainable cost structure, combined to produce a significant operating loss for the year, leading to a restructuring of our operations at year-end. This includes stepping back from serving the San Jose community in the near-term and focusing on high schools and companies in San Francisco and Oakland. We will soon announce the hiring of a new Executive Director to join our new Development Director, Nicole Terrizzi, as they lead Genesys Works Bay Area towards greater levels of growth and impact in the years ahead.

Opening Doors to

Opportunity. A simple word, yet so powerful. For the students we serve, urban teens brimming with motivation and untapped potential, access to life-changing professional opportunities is far too often limited or inaccessible. Yet, because of you, we are able to open doors of opportunity for hundreds of talented young women and men each year in the Bay Area. In the pages that follow, we are excited to share the impact your gift and partnership has had on our students, business partners, and the broader communities we serve. As you will read, great things happen at the intersection of motivation and opportunity, and we are proud to be your partners in this important work.

With gratitude,

SCOTT KUPOR

We achieve OUR MISSION t hro ug h:  Skills Training

8 WEEKS OF SKILLS TRAINING THE SUMMER BEFORE SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL

 Meaningful Internship

THE PROBLEM The disparity

between what students are taught in the classroom and what’s needed for success in today’s workplace continues to widen, leaving many jobs unfilled and millions of young adults unemployed. Closing these skills and opportunity gaps is an urgent economic and social imperative, particularly for students in under-resourced communities lacking access to most professional work opportunities.

OUR SOLUTION By offering

students the opportunity to succeed in a professional work environment while still in high school, we open up career possibilities and pathways previously thought unattainable. Students complete our 14-month program with in-demand job skills, relevant work experience, elevated career aspirations, and increased confidence that their dreams of college and career success can become a reality.

The Genesys Works program was introduced to Kirkland & Ellis San Francisco in 2013. Back then, Pam Naraja volunteered to conduct mock interviews for students before she became a Genesys Works supervisor. Now, Pam has been an intern supervisor for 5 years. Pam’s intern, Joseph Huang, provides technology support with tasks such as re-imaging computers for incoming lawyers. “My favorite part of my job is working with lawyers and learning about their career paths,” said Joseph. After high school, he wants to study law. His colleagues at Kirkland are the perfect mentors to help him achieve this goal. Kirkland & Ellis has placed Genesys Works interns in five of its offices — Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Palo Alto, and Washington, D.C. Because of its commitment to youth in the community, Kirkland & Ellis allows employees like Pam to open doors of opportunity for our future workforce. “I genuinely want to help our interns, and I like seeing how they thrive within our department,” Pam said.

Genesys Works interns help us with our day-to-day processes and projects. They are valuable members of our team, and we depend on them daily. Pam Naraja (right), Technology Support Manager, Kirkland & Ellis

Alumni Equipped for the Future Janessa Phanh worked at Salesforce as part of her Genesys Works internship when she was just a senior at Leadership Public High School in Oakland. During that time, she learned how to test and debug web pages, and she also took part in a number of panels, where she spoke to employees at Salesforce and gave her student perspective. Because of Genesys Works, Janessa learned how to succeed in a professional environment. It was difficult for her to decide to leave home and attend the University of California, Merced. But she had gained the knowledge and experience she needed to move two hours away and start this important chapter in her life. Now, Janessa is studying anthropology and computer science, with the hope of graduating in four years and working in the Bay Area. To learn more about the impact Genesys Works is having on Bay Area youth, read about the findings of a five-year Harder+Co study on page 9.

Harder+Company Community Research works with public- and social-sector organizations across the United States to learn about their impact and sharpen their strategies to advance social change. Since 1986, their data-driven, culturallyresponsive approach has helped hundreds of organizations contribute to positive social impact for vulnerable communities. In 2013, Genesys Works Bay Area partnered with Harder+Company Community Research to conduct an evaluation of the program. The evaluation included three components: an implementation study, an outcome study, and an impact study. Harder+Company has released the findings, and Genesys Works is excited to share a preview of the highlights: 1) Participants had increased confidence in the classroom; 2) Participants were more comfortable in professional settings and feel more optimistic about their career options; 3) Participants knew more about their postsecondary options; 4) GWBA had a positive impact on high school graduation rates; and 5) Both analyses show a positive impact on college enrollment and persistence. This report was produced with funding from GreenLight Fund and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) Social Innovation Fund (SIF) program.*

*The contents of this product do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the funding agency. SIF was a program that received funding from 2010 to 2016 from CNCS, a federal agency that engages millions of Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs, and leads the nation’s volunteer and service efforts. Using public and private resources to find and grow community-based nonprofits with evidence of results, SIF intermediaries received funding to award subgrants that focus on overcoming challenges in economic opportunity, healthy futures, and youth development. Although CNCS made its last SIF intermediary awards in fiscal year 2016, SIF intermediaries will continue to administer their subgrant programs until their federal funding is exhausted.
