Dear Friends and Supporters,

Our Young Professionals are making news as well. 100% of our young professionals are getting accepted to their colleges of choice, they are receiving scholarships, and a majority of our alumni are continuing their college education and getting hired by many businesses in the local community. Through these success stories, we know that the work we do is having an impact. After 3 years in the National Capital Region, we know that Genesys Works: for students, for schools, and for companies. We’re excited to share more about our students, workplace supervisors, generous donors, and corporate and school champions. Without you, we simply could not make sure these youth achieve career success. As 2019 unfolds, we urge you to think about what doors of opportunity you might help open this year. Whether providing more internships at your company, supervising and mentoring an additional young professional at work, guiding a student from your school to our program, or providing the financial support necessary to sustain our operations, there is an important role for us all. We thank you in advance for your continued support of the students and mission of Genesys Works.

OPPORTUNITY

We are excited to share that the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation has awarded us with a 3-year, $1 million grant to support the expansion of our program in Virginia and the District of Columbia. This investment, along with the continued and growing support from our corporate partners, enables us to ensure that our region’s young professionals will infuse the technology talent pipeline with greater diversity and productivity.

Opening Doors to

Opportunity. A simple word, yet so powerful. For the students we serve, young people brimming with motivation and untapped potential, access to life-changing professional opportunities is far too often limited or inaccessible. Yet, because of you, we are able to open doors of opportunity for hundreds of talented youth each year in the Washington metropolitan community. In the pages that follow, we are excited to share the impact your gift and partnership has had on our students, business partners, and the broader communities we serve. As you will read, great things happen at the intersection of motivation and opportunity, and we are proud to be your partners in this important work.

With gratitude,

MIOSHI MOSES

We achieve OUR MISSION t hro ug h:  Skills Training

8 WEEKS OF SKILLS TRAINING THE SUMMER BEFORE SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL

 Meaningful Internship

THE PROBLEM The disparity

between what students are taught in the classroom and what’s needed for success in today’s workplace continues to widen, leaving many jobs unfilled and millions of young adults unemployed. Closing these skills and opportunity gaps is an urgent economic and social imperative, particularly for students in under-resourced communities lacking access to most professional work opportunities.

OUR SOLUTION By giving

students the opportunity to succeed in a professional work environment while still in high school, we open up career possibilities and pathways previously thought unattainable. Students complete our 14-month program with in-demand job skills, relevant work experience, elevated career aspirations, and increased confidence that their dreams of college and career success can become a reality.

Going to school in Southeast DC has given Tarrell a grit and determination to succeed academically and in life. From dealing with bullies to going to school with students that lack the same motivation to influence their own future, Tarrell never let those situations affect his positive outlook. Today, Tarrell works in the IT Department at the Smithsonian Institution after completing 8 weeks of skills training with Genesys Works. During his training, Tarrell was taught key technical and professional skills, which he uses in his internship every day. By participating in Genesys Works, doors are opening for Tarrell. His internship has allowed him to meet and network with professionals in the field, like his supervisor, Ann Gilstrap. “Tarrell has grown so much since his first day,” Ann said. “There’s no doubt that this internship opportunity benefits our department, but it certainly benefits Tarrell to gain exposure to mentorship that will serve him well as he plans his future in the IT field.”

It feels great to be in a positive environment, where people appreciate what you do and offer to help you with your plans for the future. Tarrell Talbert, intern at Smithsonian Institution, H.D. Woodson High School

Spreading the News, Increasing the Impact When the Chief Operating Officer of one of Kratos’ largest partners, Intelsat, recommended the Genesys Works program, it didn’t take more convincing for Phil Carrai, President of the Space, Training and Cyber Division of Kratos to become a partner. “We’ve had an outstanding experience with our Genesys Works interns,” Phil said. “The work ethic of such young adults is astounding, and our team has really embraced mentoring these young professionals.” Ali is a senior at Falls Church High School and works at Kratos every afternoon under the supervision of Matt Brincefield. Genesys Works prepared Ali for his first day at Kratos, but he has expanded his knowledge base since working with Matt, by learning Linux, tackling some networking, figuring out the FedRAMP accreditation process, coding in Python, and more.

“My most memorable day was when I finished my first substantial script, which automated a portion of real, billable work. I poured hours of effort into it and it was satisfying to see my effort pay off,” Ali said.

We partner with Genesys Works because mentoring is part of our company culture, and this is a great opportunity to work with young people, like Ali. Matt Brincefield (right), Manager, Penetration Testing Team, Kratos

A New Pathway to a New Future

Czarina moved to the United States from the Philippines just over two years ago. The transition was overwhelming, and Czarina felt lost and anxious about her future. Everything she knew to be true was now uncertain. Joining the Genesys Works program her senior year of high school allowed Czarina to explore the IT industry and set herself on a new pathway. After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School and finishing the Genesys Works program, Integrity Management Services hired Czarina as a part time employee to continue the great work she was doing while she is studying information technology at Northern Virginia Community College. IntegrityM is a certified women-owned small business, headquartered in Alexandria and under the supervision of her manager, Tibor Molnar, Czarina provides helpdesk assistance and project support to the IT Office. “Czarina brings enthusiasm and a strong work ethic to IntegrityM,” Tibor said. “She is eager to learn and grow, challenging her fellow employees to provide the highest quality services to our clients and partners.”

If it weren’t for Genesys Works, I wouldn’t have a great job and a great future ahead of me, working to reach my American dream.

Innovative Pathways Prove Critical for Today’s High School Youth According to Kevin Mcmahon, Director of Student Services at West Potomac High School, without the Genesys Works program in their school, students would not have access to such opportunities such as technical and professional training and job experience. “Problem-based learning, professionalism, real-life application of skills… these are all areas that we know will help students after high school,” Kevin said. “Genesys Works focuses on all these and more in their program. What better place to learn than in the workforce?”

This is the third year West Potomac has participated in Genesys Works. They were one of the first schools in Fairfax County to launch the program. Their principal, Tangy Millard, has been a champion since Genesys Works launched in the National Capital Region. Throughout her work in Fairfax County Public Schools, she has advocated for the program, because she recognizes the importance of career pathways. “Those pathways need to be tailored and innovative; Genesys Works is such a pathway,” said Tangy.

The opportunities provided to our students by Genesys Works are top-notch and the training toward their postsecondary growth is invaluable. Tangy Millard (right), Principal, West Potomac High School
