homag.com — simple, user-friendly and solution-focused

Homag Group unveils new, more user-friendly website An individual and personalised approach to customers and business partners around the world has always been key to the success of the Homag Group. The global corporation is now also applying this winning formula online. The new website provides the platform needed to achieve this: it is modern, user-friendly and well designed. It goes without saying that the new company website is also responsive and therefore available for use on any mobile device. A focus on the user The site that went online in 1998 as one of the first websites in the industry has developed with the market – and it is now being re-launched with an updated, globally-oriented design. During the development of the new Homag Group website, there was just one main focus: the user. One for all As a single URL for all products, www.homag.com provides an ideal basis for dialogue with customers, employees, job seekers, business partners, suppliers and journalists. The website provides every visitor with easy access to clear information on new product developments, future market trends and current trade fairs, as well as the opportunity to learn all about the practical experiences of Homag’s customers. The benefits at a glance • Clear product information: all Homag Group products are shown in a clearly laid out catalogue, which is easy for users to navigate – whether they are looking for a specific technology or simply want to browse the product range. Clear

descriptions, informative videos and brochures are provided. News and the latest technology highlights are also presented. • ProductFinder – find the right product in just a few steps: By selecting specific criteria in just a few clicks, users can find the ideal solution to meet their needs. • Tailored solutions: the focus is on the extensive experience of customers who work with Homag machines. In reports and videos, companies from all industries let the company in on the inside story. Even users looking for a complete solution for an end product (furniture, construction components, flooring, prefabricated house) will quickly find what they need. A full range of solutions is available — from small workshops to complex batch size one systems. • Career ladder for applicants: future employees can quickly and easily navigate through the new career area to find the perfect job, receive helpful application tips or find out more about the area around a potential new job location. • Share and like: it is now easy to share website content with friends, colleagues or business partners. Customers with a starring role in a reference report are also a big hit on social networks. For Alexander Prokisch, marketing director, the new online presence is a long awaited step forward: “Around 90% of prospective customers now look for information online before purchasing a machine. But it is not just when

an investment is imminent that the Internet plays an important role – the online world is becoming ever-more important in the wood processing industry. For example, our customers implement projects with a focus on Industry 4.0 and use fully networked production processes. “They communicate with smartphones or tablets in their day-to-day business – whether in the furniture industry, manufacturers of prefabricated houses or interior fittings, or a two-man joinery business. Information on design,

trade fairs, business partners or technology is all found online. For us, our new website is an additional sales organisation with a global showroom. It allows us to offer countless customer touchpoints 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “What I like most is the fresh new design and the mobile capability – now all of our salespeople can use their smartphone to present information to customers at any time while they are on the road or at trade fairs. Try it yourself and send us your feedback!” homag.com

Kindred’s displaying retailer base hits the magic 50 Kindred Living has announced that its approved displaying retailer base has reached 50 across the country. Only four months since the launch of the Kindred brand of fitted bedroom furniture, Inline Kitchens & Bedrooms of Pontefract have become the milestone appointment. Comments Kathryn Bassett, category brand manager at Kindred: “We are delighted that Inline are working with us on Kindred, as an independent specialist they are an ideal partner for the brand. “Kindred delivers a huge opportunity for our retailers to grow their bedroom business, bringing the fitted bedroom offer into the 21st century. It was this relationship that quickly gave it total confidence in becoming a Kindred retailer. Comments Ian Winterburn, Inline’s managing director: “We are thrilled to be Kindred’s 50th approved displaying retailer and had no hesitation in working with the new brand. The marketing support is second to none, so much better than anything available in the market, showcasing photography that’s realistic and achievable for our target market, reflecting the

Successful open day for Wentworth Kitchens Wentworth Kitchens, Colchester, enjoyed a successful open day in March with more than 80 people visiting the new premises. The Mereway showroom has been based in Colchester since 2001 and made the move to a larger showroom in order to expand its product offering.

Trading partners, Blanco UK, Britannia, Caple Appliances, Karndean and Marble Building Products have all renewed commitment to the programme. The Kbsa membership package covers a three month free membership period, cash-back against first quarter subscriptions and a £100 Love2shop voucher which is payable on successful approval and payment of membership. Three levels of membership are available, Bronze, Silver and Gold with additional Premium Partnership benefits available to those that are eligible to join the programme at the highest level. Benefits include training, marketing materials, advertising, PR support, website listings and window signage.

Owner Mark Winstanley says: “It was an amazing day with so much positive feedback from customers old and new. Everyone loved how spacious and luxurious the new showroom is with its stunning upto-date kitchen displays. There was a lot of interest in the new bedroom and media furniture with several orders taken on the day.” A home economist from Siemens was on hand to cater for the guests. She demonstrated the benefits of cooking with the latest steam oven technology and produced a selection of savoury treats and cakes through the afternoon. Bruce Thomas from Mereway added, “It was great to have the opportunity to support Wentworth Kitchens with their expansion plans. Despite the economic uncertainties the market for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms remains strong. Mark has shown that continuing to

“We can and must make the apprenticeship levy work for industry,” says skills expert Semta The Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance is a not-for-profit organisation responsible for engineering skills for the future of the UK’s most advanced sectors. The organisation is urging businesses in the advanced manufacturing and engineering sector – of all shapes and sizes and in all parts of England – not to miss out on the opportunities afforded by the new apprenticeship levy. Annette Collins, head of Semta Apprenticeship Service says that businesses need to make the most of the fundamental changes to skills funding arriving this spring. Semta Apprenticeship Service has been working with employers across the sector to help them to prepare for the levy since its announcement in the summer of 2015 and has developed a one-stop-shop service to make spending levy funds on high-quality, industry-developed apprenticeships as simple as possible for employers. “This is a momentous moment in skills provision – one not to be taken lightly,” says Annette. “We have skills shortages across the advanced manufacturing and engineering sector, and the levy offers an opportunity to employers across the sector to spend a potentially quite substantial sum of money on meeting their skills needs. “It’s really important to remember

that employers will be able to be creative and flexible in how they spend their levy funds to benefit their business. They will be able to use them to up-skill and re-skill existing workers, as well as to recruit new talent. The Semta Apprenticeship Service will be there to help those in industry to maximise business and learner impact.” On its introduction on 6th April this year, the levy will be set at a rate of 0.5% of an employer’s annual payroll – a £15,000 allowance from Government will mean that only employers with annual payrolls of over £3m will ultimately pay any levy. “This means that a majority of employers will not pay the levy and will not pay for their apprenticeships with the new digital voucher scheme. Instead, 90% of the cost of their apprenticeships will be covered by Government, with further top-ups being offered too, so that some non-levy-funded

Annette Collins, head of Semta Apprenticeship Service

apprenticeships will continue to enjoy full Government funding. From spring 2018, levy-paying employers will be able to transfer up to 10% of their apprenticeship vouchers to SMEs and their supply chains – offering the prospect of millions of pounds’ worth of additional funding cascading

down through the advanced manufacturing and engineering sector. “These huge changes may seem daunting, especially to smaller companies – we will put our strong heritage of 60 years serving the engineering sector and our unique status among apprenticeship providers as part of the Semta Group to best use,” says Annette. The new Apprenticeship Levy Service sees the provision of a strategy to deliver apprenticeships for businesses that utilises the expertise of the entire Semta Group. “There is an unprecedented amount of change currently taking place in the skills arena. However, built upon our unique industry insight, the Semta Group can help employers to fully prepare for the challenges and opportunities this offers, helping to develop skills solutions that ensure maximum business and learner impact,” adds Annette. semta.org.uk

SterlingOSB gives factory canteen an edgy industrial look Smiley Monroe, a Lisburn-based manufacturer of ‘endless’ conveyor belts and custom rubber parts for the materials processing equipment manufacturing sector, has just refurbished an existing 1980s storage facility, to provide open plan offices and a canteen for its Supply Chain team, which spent summer and autumn 2016 working out of converted shipping containers. Marketing director, Tim Monroe, explains that Norbord’s SterlingOSB is used throughout the canteen area: “My design for the kitchen’s low-level cupboards, carcasses and worktops employs 100% SterlingOSB,” he says. “Our contractor, Woodhouse Workspace, worked closely with a bespoke joinery company, who applied three coats of smooth, matt protective lacquer to all OSB surfaces for hygiene, safety and longevity. This makes for a very pleasing contrast: a highly textured, yet soft-to-the-touch finish,” adds Tim. Space-saving, high bars for metal stools around the canteen are also made from SterlingOSB, with galvanised scaffold poles providing the frames.

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 10

The industrial look is completed by a hard-wearing concrete effect vinyl floor, rough timber and raw steel clad-walls, exposed metal conduit pipes and filament-style

LEDs inside work lamp cages. “I chose SterlingOSB board primarily for its visual impact – it gives an edgier, more raw aesthetic than plywood, which is too familiar

a material for what I was trying to achieve,” says Tim. Besides the distinctive texture and appearance of SterlingOSB, Tim says that the product’s affordability, strength and environmental profile were important factors in his decision to use it. Tim is now already using SterlingOSB for another project. “It’s in a location that’s possibly a little more glamorous than Lisburn: our outdoor booth at Conexpo-on/ Agg – North America’s largest construction show in Las Vegas this March,” he says. “Our upper level hospitality suite, virtual reality pod, product zones and hexagonal Giants Causewayinspired furniture, is all fabricated from SterlingOSB.” norbord.co.uk

Established timber merchant and sawmiller A & W Cushion, with mills in Norwich and Great Yarmouth, has replaced its existing planer-moulder with a new Kuper SWTXL6 machine from Daltons Wadkin.

Daltons Wadkin equips East Anglian sawmill Long-time Daltons Wadkin customer, A & W Cushion, which boasts five generations of family ownership, approached Daltons Wadkin ales director Andy Walsh in order to find a machine which would be heavy enough to suit their production requirements and at the same time provide technical innovations to improve performance and quality of the finished product.

Directors Cedric and Dominic Copping visited the Daltons Wadkin showroom to see the latest Kuper machines and were impressed with the build quality and available specifications. After discussions with Andy, a Kuper SWTXL6 six-head machine was chosen incorporating Siemens controls, an air cushioned table with chrome bed plates, 8000rpm spindle speeds and linear chip breakers. The Kuper was subsequently A & W Cushion director Dominic Copping with the new Kuper planer moulder

Dominic Copping says: “We are absolutely delighted with the new machine and the installation and back-up service provided by Daltons Wadkin. The new moulder suits our production requirements ideally and the advice and support

A step up for Salvador and Daltons Wadkin

Super crosscutting system for Stairbox When Alex Hancock of AVC (Classic Woodworkers) which trades as Stairbox realised the need to improve the crosscutting performance and output in its mill at Stoke-on-Trent, he was quick to turn to Daltons Wadkin for a solution. The company has been a specialist supplier of joinery products for over 20 years and specialises in the manufacture and installation of staircases for both domestic and commercial requirements. It operates a 66,000 sq ft staircase factory incorporating the latest technology for staircase manufacture. Daltons Wadkin, of course, had an ideal solution according to sales director Andy Walsh, who, after visiting Stairbox at its Stoke-onTrent plant was able to recommend the Salvador S600 Super Angle crosscutting system which enables angle cutting as well as straight, is fully automatic and programmable and for this installation was supplied with a 6200mm infeed capacity. Andy comments: “I knew straight away we had the perfect solution for Stairbox. The Salvador is a fully

optimising machine which is fully equipped to meet their needs. The machine is versatile and fast and should be of huge benefit to their crosscutting production. We were delighted to be able to negotiate the order and ensure

that yet another Salvador machine is installed and running in the Midlands area.” Alex Hancock says: “We had good advice from Andy and the Daltons Wadkin engineering and installation team have done

everything we expected of them. The machine is running daily and impacting greatly on our crosscutting performance.” 0115 986 5201 sales@daltonswadkin.com daltonswadkin.com

Paradigm Woodworking Specialist was created three years ago by Andy Pears and Steve Redgrave to create complete turnkey solutions from product design to manufacturing, primarily within the retail and leisure industries whether it is a complete refurbishment or an entirely new store or restaurant.

Turnkey solutions for demanding markets facilitated by Felder technology

Paradigm Woodworking Specialist aims to deliver the best service to clients, making sure ideas and visions are made into reality. Paradigm has a highly skilled team of craftsmen whose expertise in their field make sure their customers get a fantastic result on time and on budget. With the business rapidly growing, Paradigm recognised the need for faster, more robust machinery that could handle its ever-increasing production requirements and at the start of 2015 it decided to purchase a Kappa Automatic beam saw and a Perfect 710 e-motion edgebander from the Format-4 range as well as a K540S sliding table saw from the Felder range. Director Andy Pears says: “Whilst doing all the necessary research we came across the Felder Group, whose website and product catalogues had all the information we needed to give us the confidence that their machines were perfect to help us sustain our continued growth. “Our beam saw is the perfect fit for our company and with the improved software compared to what we had, we have increased our productivity,” comments Andy. “We also needed a solid edgebander that could handle solid lipping at the high volume we put through it and that is exactly what we got!” Since the installation of the Perfect 710 in March 2015, the edgebanding machine has completed over 118km of edging across 205,000 panels in only 1126 hours of run time. 01908 635000 felder-group.co.uk

Contract furniture manufacturers are investing in advanced woodworking machinery that can be automated and linked in production cells that deliver efficient, high quality production.

Homag’s woodCAD|CAM software improves presentation and drives automation for contract furnishing manufacturers There was a time, in the not too distant past, when the contract furniture industry seemed to be somewhat of a gravy train. The demand, by corporate and Government clients, for acres of cubicle and panel systems provided good margin work for large and small manufacturers alike. That time has passed, and now, to be successful in this ultra-competitive market, producers have to ensure that every element of their businesses is run efficiently and professionally. To achieve this, contract furniture manufacturers are investing in advanced woodworking machinery that can be automated and linked in cells that deliver efficient, high quality production. The control of this advanced machinery is handled by specifically developed software that performs a multitude of tasks for their businesses quickly, accurately and consistently.

Global market leader, Homag, is at the forefront of development for this software with its woodCAD|CAM product. This software enables manufacturers to do everything from detailed 3D room planning for quotations to parametric design, drawing output, part lists and automatic CNC programming. “Homag’s woodCAD|CAM software has given a more professional edge to our business,” claims Andrew Duncombe, a director at Leicestershire-based Wreake Valley Craftsmen. He continues: “We’ve been in business since 1951 and are committed to combining traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing methods. “Our mantra has always been to invest in the best machinery and systems available. As a consequence, we have been a customer of Homag UK’s for many years. With the increasing competitiveness of the contract furniture market, we recognised the need to

invest in software that would not only help us automate our processes, but also provide us with a more professional presentation capability.” Making the right choice “Clearly, we had to make the right choice for the business as this software was going to become the foundation for the design and manufacturing processes within the company for the foreseeable future. As part of our due diligence, we evaluated the leading solutions in the market before deciding on Homag’s woodCAD|CAM software. “There were two key reasons we selected Homag’s solution. Firstly, with woodCAD|CAM the drawing and programming of the machines is integrated, unlike the competition where they are two separate processes. “Secondly, we knew that the Homag software had been developed in conjunction with Homag machinery and therefore the compatibility was guaranteed. That was really important to us, because we didn’t want a situation where one supplier was blaming the other for any issue that might arise.”

Streamlining processes “The software has enabled us to streamline our processes and increase our capacity whilst maintaining the high quality standards of finish and service we demand. The 3D rendering of products has enabled us to create a much improved standard of presentation drawings for clients. “Instead of the old 2D drawings, these 3D renderings not only make it easy for them to see exactly what they will be getting, but they also facilitate changes to be made quickly and easily, providing clarity and eliminating potential misunderstandings. “As part of the investment in the software we took on a graduate who, whilst having little experience in cabinetmaking, is an expert in CAD|CAM software. He has found the Homag software to be intuitive and easy to get to grips with. He was also impressed with the training he undertook both at Homag and here on site,” concludes Andrew Duncombe. Whiteleaf Furniture converts to Homag Based in Thame in Oxfordshire, Whiteleaf Furniture was founded in 1870 and has become one of the leading contract furniture specialists in the country. The company is committed to exceptional customer service and delivers the highest level of customer satisfaction. The company first bought machinery from

Homag in the early 1990s. Its plant list now includes two edgebanders, three BHX 050 drilling and routing CNCs and a Homag BMG CNC, plus another BMG already on order. In early 2016, the decision to invest in four of the machines at the same time was made. This decision was driven primarily by the choice of software. Neil Thompson, production director at Whiteleaf Furniture takes up the story, “These days there is such a wide choice of machinery available for businesses like us and all will do a job. However, it was the build quality and most importantly the software that made us commit to Homag machines.” Homag woodCAD|CAM and e-solutions “We looked at various software solutions from the other main CNC suppliers, however, the Homag woodCAD|CAM and e-solutions package stood head and shoulders above the rest. It was by far the easiest to use and the demonstration by Chris was excellent, easy to understand and very comprehensive. “It was clear that with a minimum of training we would be up and running within three months and the addition of e-solutions meant we would be able to program everything from the office straight onto all the machines. “With e-solutions, we can design full kitchens, do costings for estimating, optimise board usage and program the machines. In short, you can

pretty much run your whole factory if you’ve got e-solutions. “The software does everything we want. It alone has increased our productivity by at least 10% because it gives us the versatility of programming single bespoke items and large batches with ease. “Our main business is manufacturing student accommodation and we might, for example, have to produce one reception desk and 400 or 500 studio fit-outs. The Homag software allows us to do this, whereas it would appear that none of the other software packages available would.” Parametric design drives efficiencies “When you design a cabinet using e-solutions you can set certain parameters. So let’s say you’re making a cabinet that’s one metre tall, so it will have two hinges for the door. Anything from one metre to two metres might have three hinges and anything over two metres will have four hinges. “Then when you draw a cabinet, it works to these parameters and actually draws the hinges complete with the drilling positions for them. If you’re putting shelves in it, it adds all the drilling for the shelves. So basically, we draw a cabinet, and the software marks out exactly where all the fittings have to go. “If we put extra shelves in, it will highlight any potential snags. For example, if the shelves are going to interfere with any hinges. This enables you to adjust the design accordingly. So, once you’ve set your parameters, you can design your products and it works out where everything goes for you. Then, you just send it to all the machines and they’re automatically programmed to do the necessary drilling.” Customer confidence “Since we’ve had the Homag equipment and software installed, we have been able to bring clients to the factory to prove to them what we can do. Within half an hour, what they have seen gives them the confidence to believe that what we say we can deliver … we definitely will deliver. “We can say to them, sit here with our designer and create a cabinet you’d like in your project. Then, by the time we’ve finished the factory tour with them, we can show them the cabinet they designed as a finished product – it is very impressive,” concludes a very happy Neil Thompson. Award-winning firm APSS achieves desired zero glue finish for its high end turnkey projects.

APSS now has the zero-glue-line finish

“The Ott edgebander was the only machine that was able to provide us with a zero glue line finish along with all the benefits of PUR adhesive,” John Bysouth joinery production manager of APSS recalls. “From the outset we were looking to produce a top quality product with a perfect finish. Waterproof tape application and high heat resistance are now both standard on all our edgebanded panels,” he says. APSS specialises in turnkey design and build of projects throughout the UK. The company has been growing successfully over the past 20 years and has been awarded many prestigious business awards.

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 18

The Lincolnshire-based company decided five years ago to bring joinery production in-house, to ensure continued quality control and to minimise lead times. Last year a decision was made to purchase a new quality edgebander to replace the existing machine. An extensive investigation was started and during the process five different machine manufacturers were contacted and after careful evaluation a new Tornado PLUS machine was ordered from specialist edgebanding machine supplier FEN UK. “Having worked with FEN in the past and having received very good service support, it filled us with a great degree of confidence to go

ahead with the purchase of our new edgebander,” John explains. “When we were looking at the different machines, we investigated carefully the different technologies to apply PUR adhesives. Some of the solutions out there are really quite complex systems. It was the build quality and easy maintenance of the new Ott edgebander that swung it in its favour. The machine is very effective when dealing with PUR and provides a stunning finish!” The new Tornado PLUS edgebanding machine features the patented fully electronic Combimelt system which has been designed from the outset for application of PUR adhesive and enables a near maintenance-free use in production. There are many benefits when using the Combimelt system. For example, to achieve a zero glue line finish there is no need to purchase special and much more expensive edging tapes. Edgebanding speed is a rapid 20m/min. The application of ABS coil materials, laminates and solid wood strips up to 15mm thickness enable maximum

production flexibility. There are patented LCM cleaning systems installed to ensure all panels leaving the new machine are completely finished. All cleaning fluids and PUR adhesives are available from Derby-based FEN and supplied the next day. To ensure minimum downtime for APSS, only two days were allowed for the installation and commissioning of the new machine, including the complete removal of the old machine! “We are now producing our own cubicle and IPS systems, as well as door fronts which allow us to streamline our project deliveries even further. Since installation of the machine we have received very positive feedback from our customers and suppliers regarding finish as well as our range of edgebanded products, including 15mm solid wood materials for interior doors which are made to bespoke sizes. We are looking forward to a very busy year!” 01332 516557 fenuk.com

Daltons Wadkin installs second crosscut at P Shipston

Salvador rises above the flood Lancashire-based timber frame manufacturer P Shipston and Sons suffered a serious flood some 12 months ago causing serious damage to its production facility which included a Salvador S200 automatic crosscutting system which had been supplied and installed by Daltons Wadkin some years before. Faced with the impact on its business and in particular the need to get his factory going again, one of Kristian Shipston’s most urgent concern was to replace the Salvador system which had been badly damaged by the flood and was basically unusable. Having had great success with this machine in the past and realising how it had boosted output and significantly reduced man hours he had absolutely no hesitation in talking once again to Andy Walsh, sales director at Daltons Wadkin, in order to obtain a replacement. Andy was able to supply a new machine of the same, i.e. a fully automatic programmable optimising S200 saw with 4200mm infeed capacity and 3000mm outfeed, touchscreen controls and defecting facility – and the company delivered and installed the

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 26

equipment at Shipston’s Burnley factory early in 2016. Andy says: “Hopefully Shipstons have already put the problems caused by the flood behind them and the new machine is replicating all the benefits which they achieved from the first purchase.”

Kristian Shipston says: “Whilst the flood was a real set back, with the help of Daltons Wadkin we were able to get up and running again with the minimum delay. Their engineers delivered the replacement Salvador to site, installed and commissioned it

and we are now back to pre-flood production levels.” P Shipston and Sons, a family business, manufactures high quality timber frames for furniture and allied industries throughout the UK. 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

Construction, furniture joinery firm Akaal relies on Cabinet Vision for all its work, whether small or large, saying it saves it hours of expensive labour.

Cabinet Vision saves Akaal thousands of pounds a week “If you make kitchens and bedrooms, or anything else with cabinets and panels, you’re wasting your time if you’re not using Cabinet Vision, and probably losing thousands of pounds a week because of all the time it saves.” Those are the words of Akaal manufacturing and construction manager Yashpal Singh Batchu. Whether it be full kitchens or individual cabinets, he says the time savings are enormous. Akaal has recently diversified from its position purely as a fitting company buying in units, to manufacturing its own. While the fitting operation continues to be run from London, the factory has been established in Oldbury in the West Midlands, where industrial property prices are lower. In addition to the 570m2 workshop it also has a 360m2 showroom which is attracting considerable interest from end-user consumers. “Everything we produce goes through Cabinet Vision – from a small job through to a large one,” says Yashpal. With around 40 different types of panels and cabinets stored in the library he says it takes around half an hour to create the full kitchen, and then he simply presses a button to send the NC code via Cabinet Vision’s ScreenTo-Machine module to Akaal’s Felder Format4 Profit H500 five-axis router.

Akaal Cabinet Vision render

Before taking on his new design role when Akaal began manufacturing in late 2016, he supervised carpentry work on the construction sites, which did not involve computers. “My computer skills were extremely limited, but Cabinet Vision is so simple to learn that I quickly reached the stage where I can easily design a kitchen from scratch. When I want to create a kitchen unit I just bring a cabinet in from the software library and it’s in place in five seconds. To draw it manually and get all the dimensions and holes right would probably take an hour,” he says. When working on a new project in Cabinet Vision he sets the room size first, then places doors, windows, sink, cooker and other appliances, then selects the appropriate cabinetry and slots it in place. For example, if the units are 600mm he will bring it in from the library, and then drag and drop until they are all set up. “Then, for the 1000mm units I’ll just press a button to convert it. It’s the same for any size. Cabinet Vision’s parametric capabilities ensure that when we adjust the height, for instance, it automatically adjusts the other dimensions and ensures the screw and dowel holes are moved to the right place for the resized cabinet,” continues Yashpal. “And we have absolute confidence that whatever we design will be faithfully cut on the CNC router, thanks to the NC code produced in Screen-To-Machine.” Those points are all echoed by Cabinet Vision’s Southern UK sales manager Danny Hargreaves. “There’s virtually no cabinet-based shape that can’t be designed quickly and accurately with the software. It’s extremely diverse and meets

A typical Akaal kitchen

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 28

any client’s individual needs simply by dragging and dropping, and then parametrically reshaping and resizing. All hole positions are adjusted accordingly, and the cut lists produced.” He is impressed at how much Yashpal Singh Batchu has achieved in such a short time with the software. “He’s now highly proficient in producing top end, quality kitchens, and is beginning to use it for making doors, too.” As a qualified and experienced carpenter, Yashpal Singh Batchu says Cabinet Vision and Screen-To-Machine fully complement his traditional skills by saving time and making it simple to always achieve perfect results. “It literally saves hours by getting all the sizes and angles right. And as well as designing and cutting the panels it makes the dowel holes, pin holes and shelf holes. I input the shelf data, and it automatically positions the holes.” He is now beginning to use the software to produce curved table tops. “A single right click accesses the Edit Shapes mode, and there are numerous built-in CAD tools for drawing arc lines, straight lines, full circles and squares, so we’re able to create any shape and send it straight to the Felder machine tool,” he says. Cabinet Vision is also making it profitable for Akaal to take on small jobbing work, too. A customer required just one cabinet from Akaal – a corner unit. “It would take a carpenter a whole day to work on that manually, and it would never be 100% – it’s likely the angles would be a couple of mm out – but with Cabinet Vision it was absolutely spot on, and took just a few moments to complete the design, including all the dowel and screw holes,” comments Yashpal. In conclusion, he says: “We don’t really have to do anything – Cabinet Vision does it all for us. It’s absolutely vital for our business, saving us thousands of pounds every week.” verosoftware.com akaal-ltd.com cabinetvision.com

From 16-19th May, the Interzum will present a wide variety of materials, fittings, components innovations for interior design and furniture manufacturing.

Interzum 2017 provides momentum for designers and architects As the world’s largest industry event in these fields, Interzum provides a comprehensive overview of new technologies and design. A new hall layout provides even more space than before while a more compact allocation of floor space allows for shorter walking distances within the exhibition. The division of the event into the three segments: Materials & Nature (halls 4.2, 6 and 10.2), Function & Components (halls 4, 5, 7 and 8) and Textile & Machinery (halls 9, 10.1 and 11.1/11.2) allows visitors to find exactly what they are looking for as conveniently as possible. With over 1500 exhibitors from more than 60 countries presenting their innovations, Interzum is the industry’s largest event worldwide. More than 65 % of visitors and exhibitors come from abroad, making Interzum the most international industry fair. At this year’s event, alongside the industry’s big names, plenty of smaller, highly innovative companies will again also be participating. International exhibitors will be showcasing an exciting and extraordinarily wide-ranging mix of new technologies, materials and surfaces. As drivers of innovation and suppliers of the entire interior design industry they are important partners in the development of new products and design trends. Precisely because of this wide range, not only do the most modern materials, components and manufacturing processes become visible at the fair, but also trends and ›

visions for the design of future living spaces: topics such as conservation of resources, sustainability, up-cycling and the increasing interest in digitalised living environments are all covered. Its flair for innovation makes Interzum particularly interesting for creative professionals.

The role of materials in individualisation: the Materials & Nature Piazzas at Interzum In this year’s Materials & Nature segment, there will for the first time be two Piazzas inviting visitors in – and they will again be conceived and designed by the interior architect Katrin de Louw. The theme for the Piazzas will be individuality. In towns and cities everywhere, wherever two or more streets join up, businesses, cafés and restaurants set up shop – and naturally, people meet up in piazza to discuss the latest events, meet up with friends or conduct business. Each of the three themed areas at Interzum has its own Piazza, tailormade to focus on their respective theme. In the Materials & Nature segment at Interzum 2017, there will be two Piazzas for the first time: one in Hall 6 and the other in hall 10.2. These two areas are linked by their common theme of individuality. The desire for individualised design of living spaces is one of the big trends to have been shaping the furniture industry for years. In the search for scope to create individualised designs, the choice of materials for furniture and interiors plays a decisive role today, and will continue to do so in the future. New materials, machining processes and surfaces are being brought to market within ever shorter development cycles. Alongside their variety, the opportunities to combine these different materials are also growing at an exponential rate, so planners and fabricators gain enormous scope to be creative, which allows them to fulfil the most varied of customer wishes. The only difficulty is keeping track of it all. This is where the Piazzas in the Materials & Nature segment becomes invaluable with their comprehensive overview of exhibitors’ highlights and coming trends in this segment. interzum.com

New smaller, invisible Ovvo V-0930 connector now available Not content with developing what Ovvo says was the world’s first invisible connection system that didn’t require the use of tools, screws or glue back in 2014, the design team at Ovvo have listened to feedback from the woodworking industry at large and has developed a smaller connector range – the recently-launched V-range. The original Ovvo connection system provided manufacturers with the ability to drive significant efficiencies and economies by enabling fast assembly of the final product, and significantly reducing transportation and shipping costs. The new V-range of connectors continues to deliver these benefits, and greatly extends the range of applications in which Ovvo can bring these benefits to, and indeed the range of materials in which it can be used. So what’s better? The new Ovvo V-0930 connector is smarter, stronger and smaller than the original multiple award-winning

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 32

Ovvo 1240 connector, and significantly extends the range of materials in which Ovvo can be used. It works best in board thickness of 12mm and above, depending on material used, and can also work in slightly thinner materials that are more dense, such as high pressure laminates, composite material and solid wood for certain applications. It is available in releasable and nonreleasable (permanent) versions, and the larger V-1230 connector will be available from June. The innovative dovetail design delivers increased intrinsic tolerance which leads to enhanced

shear and tensile strength of the joint created. The new design also features a solid central rib that confers increased joint rigidity. The new single piece housing also makes automatic insertion possible – a significant enhancement on the design of the original connector. The releasable version also features a ramped pocket that allows the joint to be made by sliding two pieces of timber together. section manager office at Okin. The company will be demonstrating height-adjustable tables at its trade fair stand to show how such a solution works. These tables use DD21 lifting columns, a power-optimised 24V motor and two Hall sensors. Its patented, adjustable sliding system provides outstanding stability. It is protected by a matching dust cover. Okin also provides stable, colour-matched frame components to complement this lifting column system. The SMARTeco or COMPACTeco control units are used to synchronise the lifting columns. They automatically detect the drives and store up to four memory locations. The integrated ISP software is used to monitor the

power consumption, Hall signals and time-outs for the adjustment system on each channel. The safety functions react depending on this data. For example, if a collision is imminent, all channels are stopped and the drives move in the opposite direction. An additional system protection mechanism can be added as an option. Convenient operations and durable components For beds and seating furniture, Okin uses multi-purpose components that can be installed in numerous products. “Our strength lies in versatility. We customise our product configurations to adapt them to the requirements of our customer,” says Stefan Kruse. Our high-quality OKIMAT double

drives are mounted without tools. They provide our customers with a very convenient solution for adjustable beds. The system’s power consumption is less than 0.5W in standby, and thus complies with the Eco-Design Directive. It also features many configuration options. These include an emergency lowering function, floor lighting external Bluetooth FURNIBUS adapter. The single drives are designed especially for seating furniture. Their outstanding features include a high adjustment load and a compact construction. Their twisted guide profile and the very small motor housing enable them to be installed into furniture even when space is scarce. dewertokin.com

LIGNA PREVIEW

www.furnitureproduction.net

The global focal point and meeting hub for the international wood industry is only a few weeks away and this year marks a shift away from what visitors will have seen before with a new layout featuring more exhibitors than ever.

Ligna 2017: innovation showcase ready to roll The 2017 edition of the most important event in the woodworking, panel and furniture production industries is taking place from 22nd to 26th May in Hannover, Germany. This year there are more than 1500 exhibitors from 45 nations attracting visitors from around the world. Visitors should allow ample time – and comfortable footwear – to navigate the show’s 10 halls plus the venue’s extensive open-air site. All the market-leading companies will be there with impressive presentations to highlight their latest products and innovations. They will be joined by a huge number of other exhibitors, some of whom will be appearing at Ligna for the first time. The show’s organiser, Deutsche Messe and the German Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers’ Association, say they have successfully implemented a new thematic layout this year. “The new approach and, more importantly, the new physical layout have been extremely well received.” remarks Dr Andreas Gruchow, the Deutsche Messe managing board member responsible for Ligna. He adds that: “This year, the exhibitors are presenting a wide array of innovations for intelligent, networked manufacturing systems, not to mention new ideas and strategies for the many value-creation networks at play in the wood processing and woodworking industries.” This year’s five-day show covers all the technologies that wood industry companies need to succeed in tomorrow’s Industry 4.0 world. The range includes tools and machinery for custom and mass production, surface technology innovations, wood-based panel production solutions, sawmill technology, woodenergy technology, machine components, and automation and forestry technology. “Ligna 2017 is where key solutions and applications will be showcased. It’s where business relationships and networks will be built that will benefit the entire wood industry for years to come,” comments Andreas. The central focus of Ligna 2017 is on intelligent concepts for integrated manufacturing across multiple links in the wood processing chain. The solutions on display promise growth and efficiency. They give wood industry companies a route to business development that does not

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 36

depend on being big. And they provide a rapid roadmap to the capabilities needed to meet growing market demand for custom production. The revamped layout includes a new Tools and Machinery for Custom and Mass Production display in halls 11-15 and 27. The display encompasses machinery for processing solid

wood, plant and machinery for industrial-scale furniture production, and machines and handtools for crafting custom products from both solid wood and panel products. It will present a comprehensive range of solutions for companies of all sizes at one convenient location and in a way that is supremely quick and easy for visitors to navigate. “The new layout of themes reflects the fact that, in modern woodworking, the type of technology used is more about what’s needed to get the job done than about the size or scale of the user’s operation. In other words, new technologies and their applications are converging,” says Andreas. “Ligna brings these innovations to life, making it easier for visitors to experience all the most relevant innovations for their particular needs.”

The show’s organiser, Deutsche Messe and the German Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers’ Association, say they have successfully implemented a new thematic layout this year.

Under the new layout, the Surface Technology area remains in hall 17, but now stars as a fully-fledged display category in keeping with its growing importance within the Ligna universe. “The Surface Technology area has won a large number of major international players as new exhibitors, and many of those already on board have opted for significantly larger displays,” says Andreas. The Machine Components and Automation Technology showcase in hall 16 has also become a fully-fledged display, thus reflecting the rapidly rising importance of integrated manufacturing and automation. These technologies promise greater efficiency, improved accuracy and shorter production cycles for a wide range of applications. This is the world of Industry 4.0, where machines are increasingly being networked with one another and robots are being deployed. Automation translates into significant efficiency gains – for small-scale joinery and carpentry firms as well as for large industrial processors and manufacturers. Industry 4.0 is on a growth trajectory and offers major opportunities for niche providers of the many products that go together to create fully integrated, automated production processes. Demand for integrated, networked solutions is growing worldwide, and the uptake of robot technology is forecast to increase sharply, especially in the CNC machining segment. The Wood-Based Panel Production and Energy from Wood displays in hall 26 and the Sawmill Technology displays in hall 25 are fully booked, thanks to strong support from global market leaders and a host of other exhibitors back for another season or joining the show for the first time.

Meanwhile, the Forestry Technology displays will feature on the open-air site and in the pavilions beneath the EXPO canopy with a fresh new look. These outdoor displays will boast a new layout that more accurately reflects the various links in the wood value chain. With an outdoor demonstration site, avenues addressing specific themes, an activity zone, and the Wood Industry Summit, the enhanced Ligna is putting forestry technology on centre stage. The other big highlights at Ligna 2017 include an array of displays themed around Integrated Manufacturing, a Processing of Plastics and Composites presentation that profiles the non-wood uses of today’s woodworking

37

machines, a series of training courses for joiners, cabinetmakers, carpenters, assemblers and installers, and, of course, the Wood Industry Summit. The many highlights of the Wood Industry Summit include innovative solutions for timber harvesting and primary processing, advanced technologies for integrating all the processing steps involved, and a strong showing by international delegations. Andreas concludes the preview by saying: “Ligna encourages a progressive approach to the possibilities of new networks. New technological opportunities lead to great gains in efficiency.” ligna.de

“The new layout of themes reflects the fact that, in modern woodworking, the type of technology used is more about what’s needed to get the job done than about the size or scale of the user’s operation. In other words, new technologies and their applications are converging,”

CAD meets CNC – SEMA connect powered by Alphacam A good and modern software solution in the field of stair design must be able to meet demanding and complex requirements – the solution must, for example, support stair-builders perfectly during all work steps and adapt to the individual needs and conditions of the respective company. The connection to a machine and production are essential factors here, for with planning and design done, a stair-builder soon will be faced with the question of how to transfer the data to the CNC machine easily, quickly and efficiently for the production of the components. SEMA provides the perfect solution by merging two applications, both of which are proven in practice and well-established in the market, for the planning of stairs and machine control! SEMA, in co-operation with the Licom AlphaCAM Company, has integrated the transfer of production data and machine control into its CAD system, SEMA Stair. The result of this co-operation is the CNC machine control ‘SEMA connect powered by alphacam’. The machine data for production will be prepared automatically for easy transfer to the machine after the quick and efficient planning and design of any types and forms of stairs in the SEMA Stair software. The components can be produced in an

individual and flexible way – perfect production strategies will be created and stored depending on the range of functions of the stair-builder’s machine(s) and the respective tools available. Stair-builders can then resort to these production strategies at the push of a button for every new stair project intended and, thus, save time and resources. SEMA provides the entire workflow by means

of this enhancement – from the planning of the stairs up to the production – everything from a single source. Users benefit from the convenience of one single contact partner for the transfer to a CNC machining centre – a significant and unique advantage on the market, unparalleled in terms of user-friendliness. 07809 219411 sema-soft.co.uk

Ligna’s new layout concept means that, for the first time, the Weinig Group will present its complete range for solid wood and panel processing in Hall 27 on a 4000m2 stand, from which it will provide customers with a unique offer for small business and industry, following the philosophy “Think Weinig” …

Digitised production from Weinig The solid wood processing area will present products from the group’s planing and profiling, cutting and optimisation, jointing technology and window and furniture production divisions. The company’s W 4.0 Digital concept, project business and alternative materials will all be under the spotlight. All 40 Weinig Group exhibits will be demonstrated live. Another first in Hanover will be the group’s joint presentation with the panel processing business unit – Holz-Her will present solutions for CNC processing, panel splitting and edgebanding on the Weinig Group stand, plus panel storage systems. Responding to the Industry 4.0 megatrend, chief sales and marketing officer Gregor Baumbusch underlines: “Digitisation for its own sake does not give you a competitive advantage. Our solutions are always targeted towards customer benefits.” Weinig’s networked production solutions, also known as W 4.0 Digital, are tailored towards providing the right information at the right time in a user-friendly manner.

Simplification Weinig creates optimal working conditions via user-friendly control systems. OptiCom/Plus software, used in all machines and systems from the Cutting product unit, provides a uniform user interface. Exhibits from the moulder segment will be equipped with the optional SmartTouch set-up aid. Monitoring sensors prevent collisions in the machine and other severe damage. On the Powermat 1500, the Vario hood assists with the adjustment of the pressure elements, while the ProfiPress T Next Generation uses automatic wood thickness setting to avoid defects. In the Weinig scanner segment, new automatic camera adjustment reduces operating errors, while the Weinig EasyStop makes entry into the automation of manual processing machines relatively easy. Finally, there will be the compact four-sider Cube Plus, in which intuitive operation

makes planing simple, operating 10 times faster than a jointer and thickness planer. Resource efficiency The key to success is digital order preparation on the PC, through Moulder Master. In conjunction with the new fully-automated Rondamat 1000 CNC tool grinding machine, OptiControl Digital tool measuring stand and PowerCom Plus controls, Moulder Master enables process stages to be linked from the idea to the finished profile, and allows the next tools and profiles to be prepared in parallel with the production in progress. Cross-cut saws, meanwhile, use the OptiPal Weinig software package, which enables intelligent cutting list creation for pallet and crate production. In Millvision and Envision, the Weinig Group offers additional software components. Based upon Weinig and Holz-Her technology, they offer the opportunity to network all processes, from incoming orders to cutting to the finished product. Wood optimisation starts with the OptiCut S 50 pushfeed saw. New features include alignment aids to increase length accuracy and fully-automated workpiece recognition. The larger OptiCut S 90 Speed now has a servo spindle stroke for tear-free cutting without refinishing. The new wFlex unit, which enables length and width cutting in a single work stage, will also be on display via an animation. At the top end of the Weinig performance spectrum, the OptiCut 450 Quantum is the fastest optimising cross-cut saw in the world. The current version’s VarioStroke automatic adjustment aid enhances performance by up to 7% and, in OptiStat, includes a new tool for evaluating production data. The OptiCut 260 and Weinig EasyScan+ four-sided colour scanner make a formidable duo for high-performance defect removal. A new feature on the saw is the servo

waste shaft, which also ensures reliable part separation during sorting in high-speed operation. In RipAssist, the range includes a system for optimised width cutting in the ripsaw segment – visible at Ligna on the VarioRip 310 M multi-blade buzzsaw and BKS band resaw. For efficient wood finishing via finger jointing, Weinig’s range extends from a short-timber solution to the high-performance finger-jointing line in the long timber segment. The Turbo-S 1000 shaper combination achieves maximum wood recovery via automatic chip removal settings and the use of a Trimsaver, with 15 press cycles per minute. Glue application monitoring ensures lower operating costs. The capabilities of the Turbo-S 1000 will be demonstrated via a linked production line, which will also include the OptiCut 450 Quantum high-speed cross-cutting system. Complementing these, the range includes the Rondamat 985, a grinding machine for fullyautomated sharpening of finger-jointing cutters. Weinig subsidiary Grecon will be represented through the ProfiShape T4P double-end tenoner, specially designed for the formatting and flattening of frame components as well as profiling of tongue and groove profiles on MDF panels. Powermat In the Powermat, Weinig has created a flexible modular system that fulfills a range of requirements. The Powermat 2400 moulder premiering at Ligna is designed for industrial bead production at feed speeds up to 100m/ min, and will be demonstrated in a mechanised process with charging and discharge. For newcomers to the world of profiling, the Powermat 700 Compact is offered. A window version is available in the same performance category for planing scantlings and profiling mouldings. On the next level, the Powermat 1500 is available in a range of variants, whether producing different widths with a mobile spindle or small batch sizes on one and the same machine. The Powermat 2500 SP splitting unit, equipped with kerf saws for separating lamellae, completes the Weinig Powermat line-up. Conturex The second generation of this successful system comprises a wide range of CNC centres for window and furniture production, all of which are based upon the same principle of the patented clamping table. The modular machines range from the compact to the twin-track system solution with parallel processing of two workpieces. A master computer control system can network any number of axes and facilitates an almost limitless production system. The seamless connection to all standard sector software opens up the Weinig Solid Woodwork Flow (WF) system to a variety of environments. Pre-planing, wood optimisation and extensive automation are now incorporated by Weinig as a matter of course and, together with the Conturex, form an efficient production cell. New features on the integrated Conturex C 125 Vario include the infeed mechanisation with parallel charging, the four Vario single-clamp

tables, each with two clamps, and the two fiveaxis heads. A live demonstration will include the Weinig Multirex 7225 Windows, a machine with a multi-functional head for the efficient five-sided processing of solid wood elements. The system also incorporates the UniPin 200, a machine for automatic window sill gluing and driving in of dowels. Smarttech On the Powermat, part recognition supports highly precise processing when it comes to 3D structuring. The cross-cut saws at Ligna will use fully-automatic workpiece recognition combined with the application of high-resolution logos. Monitoring and predictive maintenance Weinig will present a demonstration of production monitoring in window production on the Conturex CNC centre. As a practical example, the newly developed spindle monitoring will be seen in action with Weinig customer KGM, as well as the various possibilities offered by the Weinig Service App. Integration The Weinig Group will present production cells of wide-ranging complexities for a broad spectrum of demands. The compact FlexiRip / FlexiCut cutting centre links a universal multi-blade buzzsaw with a cross-cut saw. Fully-automated, 2D-optimized ripping, on the other hand, is the central theme of the large cutting system on the Weinig stand. The networked production line combines the group’s expertise in one highlyefficient solution. Gluing Two machines not incorporated into a production line but that can be integrated at any time will also premiere in Hanover. One is the new

Weinig’s Service App

ProfiPress T Next Generation, an automatic gluing press which achieves 25% more output thanks to faster packaging and increased highfrequency entry. Selective heating also plays a central role. Meanwhile, “making scantlings the fast and easy way” is the motto of the ProfiPress L B, which also makes its premiere. New features of the high-frequency press include cylinders that can be switched off, ensuring short auxiliary processing times. System expertise The Weinig Concept business unit, which brings together the expertise of the Weinig Group, will present four current activities. One is a production line for formwork girders for the construction industry. Particular features include the flexible system size and the opportunity for individual adaptation. The second project is the butt-joint block gluing, which was awarded the Schweighofer Prize. The system is now available in three performance classes, ranging from an entry-level solution to the highest level of equipment. The concept can be seen live in Hanover with a onesided cycle press in a virtual tour. Weinig recently completed a system for layer production for one of the largest CLT production lines in Europe. At Ligna, the company will present the material flow and highlight the expertise of the group across the value chain. The fourth activity presented is the palm oil wood research and development project. In conjunction with partners, Weinig has successfully completed basic tests regarding the machinability of the material, and has transitioned to manufacturing several products – the progress will be documented at Ligna. PYTHA Lab presents version 23 at Ligna An updated version of PYTHA 3D-CAD software is now available. The latest 3D-CAD-system, used for planning, presentation and production in numerous industries, has been enhanced by lots of new functions. The company says that PYTHA is more powerful than ever before and offers users even more possibilities to present designs to customers vividly and very realistically. Anyone who is familiar with PYTHA will immediately appreciate the revision and extension of the group function. New is the command On Surfaces which deforms the geometry of an object so that it matches the surface of another part. Just as if you would heat a plastic film and put it over another body. The function Action, which allows the automated movement or stretching of objects, is also noteworthy. For example, a drawer or door can be opened directly in the construction environment by pushing the button. If users wish to assign actions to groups that are part of a group, use the context menu command, Action Up, to start an entire sequence of actions. For those who are less au fait with the PYTHA 3D-CAD-system, the company will be more than happy to present it at Ligna, in hall 12, stand C07 – or by way of an individual demonstration after the show. PYTHA is well known for its ease of use and its steep learning curve. pytha.com

Proven technology, improved features – the original design is brought up to date.

New Hoffmann MU machine It has now been more than a quarter of a century since the Hoffmann key began its triumph as a multi-functional and economic constructional joining element. Its features of reliability, security and precision are recognised, worldwide, as its trademark. Hoffmann’s MS-35

The legendary routing machine, model MU, has been a permanent companion for many woodworkers for routing the grooves for the Hoffmann keys. Sustainability and value retention were some of the criteria for Hoffmann to make the popular MU-2 model fit for the next 25 years. Structural changes in the markets as well as the expansion of the application areas have been the main reasons for updating routing machines in form and function. Hoffmann has announced the special features of the newlydeveloped MU-XX model – full name to be revealed at Ligna: • A greater workpiece capacity, up to 135mm and an increased routing depth to 95mm, infinitely adjustable • Protection against accidental router breakthrough

• Routing height and routing position in the workpiece, determined by electronic and digital adjustment • Table extensions for work-piece support, according to customer specifications • Laser line for precision workpiece positioning • Two-function swing handle for faster stroke sequences at different workpiece heights • Measuring scale tapes in the table as well as in the rear fence •…and of course, the new MU-XX is again 100% Made in Germany. Further machines to be displayed at Ligna include an NC-controlled multi-axis machining centre, MX-5 NC, double mitre saw, routing and drilling machine – now including a Bluetooth signal measuring rod, a functional combination double mitre saw/routing machine, MS-35

James Latham, the UK’s biggest independent distributor of decorative panel products and timber, has seen the popularity of Xylocleaf – its innovative and highly textured range of premium Thermo Structured Surface (TSS) decors – soar.

2017 Decors making a big impact for Lathams With 20 new additions to the range for 2017, there are now 80 decors in total and Lathams is predicting that this trend is set to continue. Created and manufactured in Milan and unlike anything else on the UK market, XyloCleaf, which offers a variety of woodgrains, linens and other unique materials, is a highly original and exclusive range of decors. They are produced using a unique process of thermal fusing in which decorative papers are

treated with melamine resins, that under heat and pressure become part of the panel itself, hence the term Thermo Structured Surface. This process provides not only an impressive end result, but also a product that is strong, durable and highly scratch- and chemicalresistant. So as well as looking great, it will stand up to the toughest of challenges, meaning it is perfectly suited to premium domestic design schemes such as kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms as well as for wall panelling and

furniture. The deep textures and intricate detail of XyloCleaf makes it difficult to distinguish from the real material it is designed to mimic and the portfolio of décors all come with ABS edging as standard. As well as domestic applications, the XyloCleaf collection fits perfectly within premium design schemes in the hospitality sector, plus it is also proving to be extremely popular with high-end retail, commercial and leisure specifications. ›

Renolit’s best designs During the last year, 38 innovative effects have been introduced ranging from the latest solid colours in high gloss, matt finishes and structured painted woodgrain surfaces to the most realistic woodgrain prints and sophisticated textures. Solid colours This year solid colours and textured surfaces are prominent with 19 new effects on offer. Colours extends beyond the quiet reserves of neutral tones, as the market is again looking for warmth, vibrancy and atmosphere. High gloss To meet continuing popularity for high gloss surfaces, three vibrant new colours were introduced: Evora, Peperoncino Rosso and Plankton. Metals Metal tones are ideal for adding fashionable highlights and atmosphere such as High Gloss Arctic Blue, Copper Red Textured and Nomadic Gold. Following the successful launch last month of Movac’s new Technical Hot Spot videos – with a new Sayerlack acrylic gloss lacquer for interior and exterior woodwork – the company has followed up with the launch of two new innovative Sayerlack extra clear polyester coatings.

Movac’s new Sayerlack polyester – clearly a winner

Sayerlack PUL3501/00 and PU1317/00 are both high build flexible polyester basecoats. These extra clear coatings can also be applied to timbers stained with the Sayerlack XM8000 or XM7100 ranges of light-fast stains and also exotic timbers such as rosewood, teak and reconstituted veneers after application of the appropriate Sayerlack barrier coating. Sayerlack PUL3501/00 is a wax-free polyester which has good build and flow both horizontally and vertically. It exhibits excellent clarity, elasticity, absence of shrinkage and is easily sanded both automatically or manually. It also gives an excellent stable basecoat for the application of the subsequent topcoat. Applied in multiple coats wet-onwet with a flash-off time of 30 minutes between coats, PUL3501/00 is dust free in 60 minutes and able to be sanded after overnight drying at 20°C. Sayerlack PU1317/00 is a high build polyester coating with excellent transparency and elasticity. It is suitable

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 58

for all areas of furniture which require a high gloss finish and also has the advantage that it is able to be polished after drying to achieve a one product system. Due to its clarity, it is ideal for dark coloured timbers and because it has been formulated to pass strict automotive tests it is also suitable for use on automotive timber dashboards and steering wheels. Sayerlack PU1317/00 is now available from Movac Group Ltd in a six kilo pack size and uncatalysed has a shelf life of one year. Movac is launching both of these new Sayerlack coatings with special introductory offers available only for April. After months of planning, installation and trials, Decorative Panels Lamination has launched its much anticipated dplimitless range – a brand new flat sheet laminating line will produce the entire dp-limitless offer.

Decorative Panels launches its limitless offer Located within dp-lamination’s 140,000ft² manufacturing facility in Elland, West Yorkshire, the laminator utilises a high bond strength PUR glue line which ensures a superb overall finish on sheet sizes up to 3660 x 1430mm, although 2440 x 1220mm and 3050 x 1220mm makes up the majority of the offer. Group managing director Guy Metcalfe takes up the story: “dp-limitless is a logical extension of our offer and one that we have been researching for some time now. Decorative Panels Lamination has always been known as a business that offers a wide range of products on very quick lead times to a very wide marketplace. “We have been innovators in terms of substrate as well as surface materials, being the first people in the UK to offer a sheet, lightweight, hollowcore board solution and surface finishes such as BioCote Quartz, the first commercially available anti-microbial sheet material. “We wanted to continue this innovative approach and address an area of the market that we had never been near before – the manufacture and supply of a range of specialised decorative and high performance products available without commitment to bulk quantities and deliverable from single sheets up to full load quantities, from stock.

dp-limitless – any surface, any substrate and any volume

“dp-limitless is a range that offers exactly what the brand says, a limitless number of surface finishes bonded to the substrate of choice, available in quantities as low as one sheet.”

The new dp-limitless laminator at the Elland factory

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 60

“With such a wide range of innovative surface finishes, the potential areas of use for dp-limitless products are vast, from furniture applications to architectural and fit-out solutions, the list is endless.” dp-limitless is a range that offers exactly what the brand says, a limitless number of surface finishes bonded to the substrate of choice, available in quantities as low as one sheet. The core range is extensive and includes an array of materials and finishes including high pressure laminates from two of the world’s most recognised producers as well as Senoplast acrylics, Renolit Armouren, real wood veneer laminates, faux leather and laminated real stone veneers. “As the dp-limitless name suggests just about anything that exists as a sheet veneer can be laminated onto any number of substrates. If you don’t see it within the dp-limitless core range on The Decorative Panels Group website, just ask! We will be delighted to help locate and source a supply to satisfy your design needs, or indeed laminate your own supplied material,” concludes Guy. Customers can find out more about dp-limitless by visiting the company’s impressive marketing suite at its Elland plant or in London at The Building Centre – both locations feature brand new dp-limitless displays with lots of ideas and inspiration. 01484 658341 decorativepanels.co.uk

A wide range of HPL continues to inspire designers with impressive realism and authenticity.

Decolan’s decorative designs deliver high aesthetic values

For the furniture industry, Decolan, leading supplier with more than 20 years of experience in the decorative design industry, offers a wide range of high pressure laminates (HPL), a collection which is undergoing steady expansion to always provide higher quality, incredible durability and maximum versatility. The range has been recently expanded with the newly-added Materica range, which is becoming increasingly successful thanks to its warm looks natural, tactile characteristics that inspire a return to simplicity and nature, and with the impressive SYNCHRO4U laminate. Decolan says this is the first embossed-inregister HPL, where the grain texture precisely matches the surface finish allowing endless possibilities of application together with its unique tactile and embossed finish conveying the warmth and the beauty of the real wood. As the name itself suggests, this laminate features a haptic emboss combined with a synchronised texture, resulting in an authentic finish, similar to a real piece of wood. Thanks to the faithful look, the highest aesthetic impact and the subtle chromatic variations, not only is this laminate ideal for decorating vertical walls, but also for horizontal pieces of furniture in kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms. Last but not least, Antique Wood – a three-layer panel in real wood, chipped and brushed – is a guaranteed, balanced, harmonious mix of planks that Decolan offers to designers and architects. There are no outliers with bright or grayed planks, and yet, each panel is unique. Even the surface is authentically modelled by chipping and brushing the three-layer panel. Decolan says that Antique Wood is unique as well as multi-functional. As usual, all of Decolan ranges have the Greenguard Greenlabel certification. decolan.ch

SI X PACK

2017 STRONG CHARACTERS

Interprint presents self-confident décor statements In a world of fast changes, the design of living space primarily reflects individual needs and desires. The Interprint design team gives valuable orientation in the multiplicity of possibilities: With its ‘Six Pack’ 2017, the international décor printer presents six focused décor statements with great potential for international market success. The new ‘Six Pack’ was presented early for the first time during the Interprint Furniture Days in Arnsberg (Germany) at the beginning of November 2016: The décors proved their strong character not only as décor material versions (melamine surface, Xelio finish foil, edge banding, thermoplastic foil, EIR surface) but also directly on furniture. The Interprint décor recommendations are self-confident interpretations of current trends and styles. The main oak topic is presented in three very different interpretations: from experimental and natural to handicraft country-style. One marble design, one chestnut design and one walnut design embody authentic lifestyles. The attraction of all six décors lies in their strong materiality and naturalness.

Intra Independent. Angular. Experimental. The faults, cracks and leaching of this black stained oak show signs of natural wear and tear. In contrast to darker wood, the original bright colour has been revealed here and there. This makes it easier to combine the decor with other materials and uni colours.

Kronberg This planked oak originated from old railway sleepers. The timber, strongly parched by the sun for years, displays authentic discolourations, seasonal marks and cracks. Completely natural.

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 66

29/03/2017 16:06

Ladin Striking oak in a rustic mountain chalet look. Sandblasting and brushing techniques have transformed the original wood and given it a rough appeal. In this way, an effect has been achieved that nature would have needed decades for.

Lavant Horizontal becomes diagonal: The texture of this marble creates completely new 45 degree aesthetics. This makes it convincing on work surfaces and on the front of furniture. Alternating quartzite sections create an intensive white-grey interplay of colours. The overall unconventional impression is rounded off by a trendy matt finish.

Nairo A very original chestnut with a rough texture. The wood has greyed partially due to weathering. The decor displays a broad range of natural colour nuances. It also owes its vivid look to the counterflowing flowers and branches.

Paldao This decor is named after a tropical timber that is often used instead of walnut. Inspired by the strong character of the image of the original material, a surprising reinterpretation has been achieved. Cut flowers and light-dark nuances add depth. Now a stylish walnut classic with an unmistakable look.

The look & feel of the new Interprint décor trends primarily harmonise with three of the currently popular design styles: ‘Nature’ as an expression of relaxed naturalness, ‘Industrial’ for all purists who like imperfection

and functionality, and ‘Material’ as haptic, uncompromising counter concept to the digital lifestyle. With their authentic naturalness, the ‘Six Pack’ décors are just as trendy as timeless. For more information: www.interprint.com/sixpack2017 Interprint at Design Post Cologne: 16 - 19 May 2017.

Amongst a raft of materials, components, fittings and machinery and equipment, NEY has added decorative panels with UV coated high gloss and super matt surface finishes to its impressive range

New trend decorative panels from NEY Responding to market demand, these new trend panels have been well accepted by consumers, with the new colour ranges creating another taste and dimension, in kitchens, bathrooms, sliding doors and dining rooms. NEY will stock 30 different colours and designs, under its UK stock collection range banner with more than 100 solid colours, woodgrains, metallic, hologram and fantasia dĂŠcors available to order, under the global collection range. The PVC and PET high gloss and super matt panels have improved benefits for customers such as anti-scratch resisitance, light resisitance and continous colour stability, thanks to a new UV coating technology. New trend PVC and PET high gloss boards are laminated to 300 microns which gives consistency of surface application and excellent high gloss levels. The panel dimensions are 1220 x 2800mm which enables perfect optimisation, as tall cabinets up to 2800mm high can be made in a single piece, available with a thickness of 18mm. The panels come with a protective film on the surface and a standard foil backing. The panels can also be supplied with the same colour

The FSC® asserts that almost half of the people in the UK recognise the FSC® trademark logo design, and this increased awareness is contributing to the growth in the market of responsibly sourced timber and timber products. Leading surface design development company, Swiss Krono, is a pioneer in sustainability and environmental protection. Setting it apart from other brands, the company says it is unique in producing the core board for its Swiss Krono One World Collection from 100% virgin wood material. The virgin wood is sourced from no further than a 350km radius of the Swiss factory and meets and exceeds standard requirements from both FSC® and PEFC™. Bark and other surplus materials are totally recycled in the factory by burning them in a biomass unit to create electricity for the site. This leaves the wood free from any contaminates that may damage or shorten the life of machine tools, giving furniture manufacturers the benefit of exceptionally good machinability. In the UK, the company has a 35-year

distribution partnership with International Decorative Surfaces (IDS) which, with 13 branches nationwide, provides extensive stockholding and rapid product availability to meet the on-time and in-full needs of furniture manufacturers. To minimise its environmental impact, Swiss Krono transportation operates on a round trip basis by train. Every décor in the One World Collection is available in the UK exclusively through IDS within five working days and with no minimum order quantity. This service is made possible by the slick Red Express, the weekly train that leaves Switzerland every Wednesday and delivers products direct to the IDS railhead operations that feed into the nationwide branches. IDS also holds the most popularselling decors, plus a selection of bespoke designs, ex-stock which can be delivered to a customer’s door in just 24-48 hours. Says Dave Huggins, business development director for Panel Products at IDS: “The eco credentials of Swiss Krono products, unique in producing its core board from 100% virgin wood material, mirrors the environmental ethos of IDS.

As a company, we have held FSC® certification since 2003. Our entire product portfolio is compliant with European Timber Regulations, ensuring that customers have access to FSC® or PEFC™ certified options in each of our product categories.” The 253 décors in the One World Collection are a treasure trove for manufacturers reflecting the latest trends in metallics, abstracts, concretes, woodgrains and plain colours. Every One World décor is available as a melamine or a laminate with matching ABS edging as standard. “They can all be combined with a variety of different substrates, including chipboard, MDF of all types and compact density fibreboard (CDF). This offers the design flexibility for use on projects in the domestic, retail, commercial, hospitality, education and public sectors,” David Huggins continues. “Swiss Krono One World is very clearly presented and gives furniture manufacturers access to a wealth of design choices that reflect current trends, with the flexibility to choose from different substrates to suit their manufacturing needs. The collection is easy to work with, it has immense design flexibility and, with the virgin core board, we know it offers a superior level of machinability that will give manufacturers a perfect result every time.” 08457 298298 idsurfaces.co.uk

DUST EXTRACTION & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT

www.furnitureproduction.net

Dust Control Systems (DCS) has recently commissioned a new centralised dust extraction system for Distinction Doors – the UK’s leading supplier of GRP composite doors.

DCS wins with Distinction Based in South Yorkshire, just off junction 36 of the M1, Distinction Doors is a tradeonly supplier to the UK door fabrication industry. The company has experienced a meteoric rise in success since the company’s chairman, Drew Wright, first introduced composite doors to the UK back in 1999. Since then, over three million Distinction doors have been installed in the UK, and the company carries a stock of over 60,000 door blanks in its 86,000 ft2 of warehouse space. Distinction Doors now supplies GRP composite door blanks to fabricators the length and breadth of the UK but, as well as supplying fabricators, the company has its own large production area dedicated to machining door blanks to commercial customers’ bespoke specifications – doors are individually sized, and window apertures, letterbox slots, and lock and hinge rebates, are all machined to meet specific requirements. With an ever-growing order book, and the factory working to capacity 24 hours a day, five days a week, Distinction’s management team made the decision to increase production capacity by investing in another CNC machining centre. An order was placed with SCM for a new Accord 30 FX but, before it arrived, a complete re-planning of the production area was required. The company’s four CNC machines now occupy a dedicated, spacious area of the warehouse – a move which demanded the installation of a complete new dust extraction system, including an externally-sited modular filter unit to replace the dust plant DCS had installed nearly nine years ago.

A section of the spacious production area at Distinction Doors – Ecogate’s dampers are fitted in the main ducting runs

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 72

DCS installed a Schuko Ecovar Validus modular filter unit with 46,850m3/hr extraction capacity

Dust Control Systems has been a longstanding supplier to Distinction Doors, and the filter being replaced was originally installed by DCS when the company relocated to its current site in 2008. The old filter had coped with several additional machine installations over the years, but the new CNC was just a bridge too far, and Distinction Doors’ production manager, Andy Copeland, invited his namesake Andy Hives, company sales manager at DCS, to appraise the changed extraction requirements. “A major consideration for DCS was that installation of the new extraction plant had to coincide with delivery and commissioning of the new Accord,” says Andy Copeland, “but then all the existing machines had to be moved one at a time, over an extended period, to fit in with our production schedules.” The DCS installation team completed construction of the modular filter unit, and fitted new ducting throughout the production area ›

DUST EXTRACTION & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT

in early July 2016. Following commissioning of the new CNC machine, DCS engineers returned to site on several occasions, as individual machines were relocated, and final commissioning and completion of the installation was completed in December. At the heart of the system is a state-of-the-art Schuko Ecovar Valdius filter unit – a modular, galvanised-steel unit, designed for negative pressure operation, with power provided by integral cascading fan units. This flow-optimised configuration of four 22kW fans provides excellent energy efficiency, and clean side operation minimises fan maintenance, and ensures durability, by avoiding contamination by the abrasive waste dust generated by high speed machining of GRP composite door blanks. With an extraction capacity of 46,850m3/ hr, the system installed by DCS will not only satisfy current requirements, but will also accommodate Distinction’s plans to upgrade existing machinery – an order has already been placed for a second Accord 30 FX to replace one of the company’s older CNC machines. Dust-laden air extracted from the factory is drawn through anti-static, polyester needle-felt tubular filter bags, and clean air is dispersed to atmosphere. The waste dust is continuously removed from the filter media by a regeneration cleaning train – an array of four 4kW cleaning fans traverses above the filter bags, generating a reverse airflow which forces the dust to detach from the filter media, and a pneumatic-mechanical shaking system releases any remaining deposits. All waste drops down into the hopper section where a chain conveyor distributes the waste dust, preventing blockages and maintaining

Waste is discharged pressure-free, via a rotary valve, and then transferred to collection bags by a series of three screw conveyors

www.furnitureproduction.net

In the event of an explosion, back pressure explosion isolation valves are designed to prevent the effects of a pressure wave and flames travelling back along ductwork and into the factory

a consistent flow to the rotary valve which discharges the waste pressure-free. From here, waste is transferred to collection bags by a series of three screw conveyors. Machining door blanks with a moulded fibreglass outer skin and polyurethane insulating core generates extremely fine dust, but, with a relatively low material loading, the waste is safely and conveniently collected in twin bulk bags. Level sensors ensure the bulk bags are never overfilled, and slide gates above each filling station operate alternately to allow safe removal of filled bags. The new dust plant also provides extraction for two edgebanders, a beam saw, and a sander but, even though Distinction Doors operates a 24 hour production schedule, it is unusual for all the machines to be in use at the same time. Andy Hives explains: “Continuous, fullcapacity extraction would be wasteful; to maximise energy efficiency, our design included the installation of an Ecogate extraction-ondemand system which constantly monitors individual machine use. Ecogate dampers fitted in the main ducting automatically open or close as machines come on or offline, and fan speed is constantly adjusted to match the changing extraction requirements.” Fitting an Ecogate system can make significant energy savings and DCS conservatively predict that the reduction in electricity consumption at Distinction Doors will cover the cost of the Ecogate installation in less than 18 months. “DCS’s outstanding customer service and technical knowhow have once again proved to be a winning combination,” concludes Andy Copeland. “From initial discussions with Andy Hives, right through to final commissioning, DCS provided a thorough, professional service.” 0800 040 7116 dcslimited.co.uk

DUST EXTRACTION & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT

www.furnitureproduction.net

Upgrading the dust extraction system of one of the country’s leading furniture colleges needed to be carried out affordably and with minimal disruption – Western Air Ducts provided an effective solution.

Intelligent Local Exhaust Ventilation solution retrofitted

The professionally-equipped woodworking workshop at the Rycotewood Furniture Centre, at the City of Oxford College city centre campus, is a key resource for the many students of furniture design and making who attend both vocational and university level courses at the college. It was very important, therefore, when it was decided to upgrade the dust extraction system, that the work could be carried out, not only to a reasonable budget, but also quickly and with minimal disruption to the use of the workshop during term-time. The requirement to update the existing dust extraction system had already been established, as it was underpowered to serve the 23 woodworking machines situated in the workshop, resulting in an excess of airborne dust in the room. In addition, when the extraction system was in operation the noise created disturbed teaching and other activities in adjacent rooms, even when the woodworking machines adjacent to those rooms were not being used. The original intention of the College Estate department was to completely remove the existing dust extraction system and replace it with an entirely new system, including all the high level ducting, fans, filters, etc, and it was on this basis that several firms were invited to tender for the work. Saving significant time and expense However, when the specialists at Western Air Ducts examined the specification documents in detail, they came to the conclusion that the same improvement in dust extraction efficiency could be achieved by retrofitting Rycotewood’s Inteliair system to the existing dust extraction installation – retaining all the present extraction infrastructure, saving the client significant time and expense. Briefly described, Inteliair is an intelligent air

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 78

control system that reduces operating costs, lowers carbon footprint and improves air quality by optimising the efficiency of dust extraction, fume extraction and ventilation systems. It does this through the automatic and continuous monitoring of demand, using local control units that detect when extraction is required. In the case of the Ryecotewood furniture workshop, an Inteliair damper control unit is fitted to the extract duct serving each of the woodworking machines. Automatic damper opening When a particular machine is switched on, the Inteliair system detects that fact and automatically opens a damper accessing the extraction system, regulates the main extraction fan speed accordingly and dust is extracted. In the original system, and in competitors’ proposed replacement systems, when one machine was in use, the whole dust extraction to every machine was activated, wasting large amounts of energy. By using the Inteliair system, where extraction occurs only when and where required, the original, underpowered system, was enabled to provide all the extraction required, at a fraction of the capital cost and with potentially significant on-going energy savings. A second, additional benefit to the college is the reduction in noise generated, not only within

“The installation went extremely smoothly, the system is easy to use and the tuition and support from Western Air Ducts has been excellent – altogether we are really delighted.”

the workshop itself, which can be a pretty loud environment, but also in rooms located nearby. This is particularly true for teaching rooms adjacent to the workshop, which were quite severely impacted by noise from extraction to machines close to the boundary walls, even when the machines were not in fact being operated. Using the Inteliair system, extraction to those machines only occurs when they are in use, resulting in a greatly improved environment in surrounding areas. A third, and perhaps critical advantage of Western Air Ducts’ retrofitted Inteliair solution, has been its very rapid installation. Because all the existing ductwork, extraction fans and filters remained in place, the work involved in making the upgrade was greatly reduced and could be timed to occur over the vacation period, with the result that students’ work was not disrupted. Not fit for purpose Andy Appleby, facilities manager, City of Oxford College, explains: “The existing extraction system in the furniture workshop was really not fit for purpose and was not meeting our sustainability policy and procedures, particularly as regards energy usage. It was when we started to investigate installing a replacement system that we discovered Inteliair, which we had not previously been aware of. “When Western Air Ducts came and explained how Inteliair could transform our existing installation from its basic state into a fully automated extraction system – without the need to replace the existing ductwork which was really relatively new – we were convinced that this was the solution for us. “The installation went extremely smoothly, the system is easy to use and the tuition and support from Western Air Ducts has been excellent – altogether we are really delighted with the results,” says Andy. westernairducts.co.uk

DUST EXTRACTION & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT

Wood Waste Technology continues to save businesses money on waste removal and heating costs by supplying durable and reliable wood waste heaters and boilers.

Operating in clean air zone drives company to Wood Waste Technology Any business that generates a lot of waste wood can benefit from a wood waste heater, such as Comm-ply Yorkshire, a wellestablished family business that specialises in vehicle conversions and accessories. Established 14 years ago, the company manufactures ply-lining kits to commercial vehicles from its 6000ft2 manufacturing base in Leeds. With a huge amount of waste wood generated from production, the company was paying around £180 each week for skip hire. As well as this being a large expense for the business, it was also costing the company many man-hours to load and organise the weekly skips, plus the problem that the skip had to be placed in the car park, taking up valuable staff parking spaces. Stephen Whitaker, managing director at Comm-ply Yorkshire started to research wood waste heaters as a possible solution for

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 80

the company’s skip hire issues. He was also interested in how a wood waste heater could provide free heating for the business, due to the factory having no other heating source, and being a cold place to work during the winter months. A search on the internet for more information led Stephen to Wood Waste Technology’s website. A phone call, site survey and quotation later, Stephen ordered a WT15 which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers at the start of this year. Stephen explains: “We were really impressed with the quality and range of heaters manufactured by Wood Waste Technology (WWT) at its headquarters in Staffordshire. The team provided us with really helpful advice regarding our factory being based in a smoke-control area, as Wood Waste Technology has supplied heaters to other companies based in clean air zones.

“We also liked the fact we had the option to add a summer heat dump, to allow waste wood to continue to be burnt throughout the hotter months, by sending the heat direct to atmosphere.” MD of WWT, Kurt Cockroft says: “We were delighted to help Commply with the purchase of their first biomass heater. All our heaters are clean air exempt so are able to be used in clean air zones.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters and boilers, from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, WWT is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German

manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk

Today, health and safety issues are becoming increasingly important and sanding tools and abrasives are made more and more efficient, with focus on dustfree applications. This development places higher requirements on the dust extractors. To meet these demands, Mirka is introducing three new high performance dust extractors to address the latest health and safety demands for low (L) and medium (M) class models: Mirka Dust Extractor 1230 L PC (Push & Clean) 230V, Mirka Dust Extractor1230 M AFC (AutoFilterCleaning) 230V and the Mirka Dust Extractor 1230 M PC (Push & Clean) 110V. The extractors have been designed to handle multiple sanding applications and surface sizes with ease. The new range comes with a 30-litre container, easily accessible flat filter, a high performance 1200W motor and one-stage turbine that creates 250mbar of suction with an airflow of 4500l/min as standard to assist in the efficient removal of particles from the area being worked on. The extractors’ innovative features include an auto start function, which ensures they only run when the tool is in use, increasing the lifespan of the product and reducing the amount of noise produced. For extra space in the work area, the flat top of the extractor can be turned into additional storage

26/02/2017 10:00

with the ability to fasten the Mirka cases to the top of the machine, providing a complete sanding solution. The L class 230V and M class 110V models come with a push and clean filter cleaning system that is easy to use and provides a simple process to maintain a clear filter. The M class 230v extractor is fitted with an automatic filter cleaning system, which cleans the filter every 15 seconds for increased performance as standard. It also has an airflow sensor that indicates when the suction is below optimal levels (below 20m/s) and excess dust might be in the air. Pete Sartain, national sales manager – Industrial of Mirka UK, says: “We are aware of the health issues associated with dust produced from a variety of sanding applications and we believe it is important that we offer users the right tool for the job. In addition, our continued commitment to invest in our products is to ensure that they not only meet the standards expected by users but also assist in safeguarding their health and provide a dust-free environment to work in. “When purchasing a dust extractor, we always recommend a full risk assessment is carried out by an independent third party professional or specialist to ensure any dust extractor is fit for the purpose intended by the customer before they buy.” mirka.com

Well applied, lighting will effectively highlight the interaction between a surface’s material, colour and structure. Background or direct accent lighting in furniture for bedrooms, kitchens or living rooms creates a subtle atmosphere. Modern LED technology enables the furniture manufacturer/carpenter to incorporate LED systems into furniture with no need for any great specialist knowledge about electrical installations, and thus opens up a whole new business area. The product range stocked by the edgings specialist Ostermann contains numerous product solutions for lighting applications for shopfitting and interior design jobs. Linear lighting With the help of indirect lighting you can achieve impressive spacial effects. To emphasise floors, ceilings or furniture with light, Ostermann offers attractive profiles to build in. The plastic channels have plastic covers and, in combination with LED strip lights, offer modern, indirect lighting. Ten different models in the Sub Line edition deliver the right solution for every installation situation. From various assembly profiles to corner and add-on profiles to tubular and diffusion lens profiles, the light beam direction and angle is enabled to be specifically adjusted. Via the illuminated recessed handle, the workspace over the front is lent an extraordinarily light, floating characteristic. Lighting profiles for furniture flaps The Out aluminium LED recessed handle and the In & Out aluminium LED recessed handle, were specially designed for cabinet doors. With the Out model, only the work space under the door is illuminated. The In & Out version was specially developed for aluminium glass frames. And of course, the Ostermann range also contains matching LED strips! Furniture manufacturers/carpenters can also find all the technical profiles for linear lighting in the Ostermann catalogue or the Ostermann Technical Profiles brochure, available for download. ostermann.eu

Included among all of the diversity on show in its product range, there is a whole host of less familiar edgings that are worth knowing about. ABS edging Linen textile structured With its textile-like finish, Ostermann designed this edging to match Arpa and Resopal surfaces. It is representative of the numerous edgings with a textile feel. The experts at Ostermann reckon that it will again become an increasingly significant feature. With its unique feel and the relief-like surface decor, this edging not only matches boards with a similar finish, but it also goes perfectly with white, beige and brown plain boards. 3D acrylic edging Real multiplex smooth This attractive 3D acrylic edging delivers a genuine multiplex look. The lengthwise and traverse running veneer grains so typical for multiplex boards, and the natural inclusions of airpockets and glue layers are realistically repeated in the decor applied to the reverse side. With the décor being visible through the acrylic layer, this additionally creates an attractive 3D effect. Melamine edging Avola Pine wooden structured The increasing popularity of coniferous woods shows no signs of slowing. As just one example of the 20 different edgings to feature a pine decor, Ostermann’s experts recommend the melamine edging Avola Pine wooden structure here. The edging was designed to match the Champagne Avola surface produced by Egger. Of course there is an ABS edging with the very same decor. With over 200 different articles in the melamine range, Ostermann, the edging specialist, supplies Europe’s largest range of melamine edgings. As a special service, upon request Ostermann will cut the mother roll into the customer’s specified width. Aluminium edging Chromed anodised Silver surfaces with a mirror finish are always a certain eye-catcher. It’s no coincidence that numerous board manufacturers, including Abet, Arpa, Polyrey and Resopal stock these designs. With its solid aluminium edgings, Ostermann has a particularly beautiful and high-grade solution for finishing narrow surfaces. This mirror-finish edging is available in sizes of 23, 28, 33 and 42mm x 1mm in 25m long rolls. A protective film protects the edging during shipment and processing. Wood veneer edging Oak Stonewashed This veneered edging forms part of the Kaindl Wood Veneers Boards collection 2015.

Particularly worth mentioning is the so-called stonewashed design, which shimmers in combinations of light/dark tones, from grey to brown, depending on the light and viewing angle. This gives the wood a special vitality and unique character, and is also in keeping with the current trend for surfaces that appear aged or pre-used. Ostermann supplies edging to the Kaindl Wood Veneers Boards collection in the dimensions 24, 33 and 43 x 1mm from one roll (50m) with its bynow familiar quick delivery time. Edging variety and service perfection With the famous fast delivery service for stock items Ostermann provides edges in ABS, melamine, acrylic, aluminium and real wood, in lengths from 1m and in any width up to 100mm. Europe’s largest range of edgings includes more than 12,000 edges to the surfaces of more than 70 board suppliers. Always included are the matching edgings to the current furniture trends. ostermann.eu

MPS rises to the challenge of meeting the demanding needs of Rochdale-based Crystal Doors’ requirement for an intelligent, flexible spraying system that is also easy to use.

New CMA robotic spray cell for paint and glue installed at Crystal Doors

Crystal Doors had been looking intensively for a spraying solution that would be flexible for its bespoke made-to-measure furniture parts. In addition, it also needed it to be a self-teaching system that would be simple for a non-skilled operative to use. The final box to tick was that it would fit in its current spray facility and also spray adhesive for Crystal Doors 3D lamination in addition to spraying paints. This challenge was laid down to many machine suppliers and few were able to meet with some or all of these requirements. But the search went on and Crystal Doors found the perfect partner for its new enterprise with MPS Ltd, which was offering the CMA Robotic spray system. CMA Robotics designs, produces and installs the widest robot and painting plant range available in the market today and supplies complete solutions from planning through to full installation. CMA Robotics manages, along with the customer, the complete integration of the robot painting system into the final plant solution. Specialised scanning solutions allow piece part recognition for bespoke furniture parts such as curved doors, shaped panels and cabinet fronts, which can be presented to the robot in single or multiple component configurations via a number of transport methods that include line conveyors, carousels or other bespoke solutions. Scanners for hanging lines as used in the window and joinery trades, for example, allow the products to be scanned in line, in any order, with pre-

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 88

set finishing parameters programmed by the operator, and this data is used to spray the items correctly. The preliminary discussion with MPS was to have a machine designed, built and installed into Crystal Doors’ current spray facility “The other challenge,” explains Richard Hagan, managing director of Crystal Doors, “was that we needed to lay full press beds onto his CMA spray cell. So for this, CMA offered the paper belt system, with a spray area of 3000 x 1300mm so the full charge could be loaded for the automatic scanning and spraying cycles.” The machine would also need to be equipped with two spray pumps, one for the adhesive for the membrane pressed product of which Crystal Doors founded its business on, and the facility for a fast changes over from glue to paint for the new range of painted products and services being offered by Crystal Doors. Once all was specified and quoted, Crystal Doors proceeded with trials at CMA which proved successful and subsequently the order was placed for the machine. The line was delivered and installed in September last year and up and running just 10 days later. Equipped with two spray pumps, one for glue and one for paints, the robot has the facility for fast change from paint to glue and back. With the machine up and running on two shifts to keep up with the demands, and success of the newly-painted ranges offered by Crystal Doors, thousands of doors to date have been painted or

glued since the installation. The line now is considered a key factor in the future of Crystal Doors as it offers the ability to provide painted ranges in addition to other products without the need or reliance on highly skilled staff. “The robot sprays with accuracy, quality and speed, day or night consistently, and is run by my current production staff,” comments Richard. “A great acquisition to the Crystal Doors family, we now produce around 3000 doors per week through the line. The robot can be used both as a reciprocating machine for fast throughfeed spraying as well as the scanning method that allows the robot to identify each part individually and spray accordingly to its shape and thickness. “For Crystal Doors, the ability to pre-teach the spraying methods enables them to apply special skills for each application. In the case of the adhesive spraying we have a dwell, a short delay between edge spraying to give the adhesives that all important time to soak into the edges and dry before applying the second coat, such is the reliability of the CMA software we are guaranteed this will be done for every PVC wrapped component produced. “Thus, we all sleep well at night knowing that our vinyl wrapped doors meet all the modern day production requirements and meets all the highest standards required.” 0116 240 1795 liam@mpsmachines.co.uk mpsmachines.co.uk

Output and new orders rise solidly, albeit at slower rates – price inflationary pressures remain elevated

Solid growth for UK manufacturing The UK manufacturing sector experienced further solid growth of production and new orders during February. Although rates of expansion slowed, they remained well above the respective long-run averages. Increased new business inflows were underpinned by improved domestic and overseas demand, the latter aided by the continued weakness of the sterling exchange rate. The seasonally adjusted Markit/ CIPS Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) posted 54.6 in February, a three-month low and down further from December’s two-and-ahalf year high. However, the PMI was firmly above its long-run average of 51.6 and nonetheless signalled expansion for the seventh successive month. February data pointed to a further marked increase in UK manufacturing production. Growth remained solid across the three product categories – consumer, intermediate and investment goods – with the steepest increase seen in the latter. Underpinning the latest increase in output was a further solid expansion of new order volumes. Companies indicated that growth of new business from the domestic market slowed, but noted that this was partly offset by a sharp acceleration in the rate of increase in new export business. New export orders rose for the ninth successive month in February. Where an increase was reported, companies attributed this to improved sales to clients in mainland Europe, the USA, Asia, Australia, Canada and Ireland. The ongoing upturn meant manufacturers maintained a positive outlook. Almost 50%

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 90

expect output to be higher in one year’s time, compared to only 6% anticipating a decline. Optimism was linked to forecasts of improved demand, increased capital investment, company expansion plans and new product releases.

activity increased at an identical rate to December’s two-and-a-half year high. Rising demand for raw materials led to shortages for some inputs and greater pressure on supplier capacity.

Rising demand for raw materials led to shortages for some inputs and greater pressure on supplier capacity

Business confidence underpinned further increases in employment and purchasing activity during February. Job creation was registered for the seventh consecutive month, with head counts rising at SMEs and largescale manufacturers. Purchasing

Vendor lead times lengthened to the second-greatest extent since mid-2011. Supply-chain disruption alongside the cost impact of the weak sterling exchange rate led to a further sharp rise in purchase prices. Input cost inflation eased from January’s

record high, but remained among the fastest seen during the survey history. This fed through to the factory gate, with output charges also rising at a rate close to January’s near series-record. Duncan Brock, director of customer relationships at the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply: “Buoyant economic conditions gave the sector a spring in its step. Levels of new business and overall activity grew for the seventh consecutive month, underpinned mainly by a strong rise in new export orders. The investment goods sector was the biggest winner with the fastest growth in production. “As a result, manufacturers had the confidence to maintain good levels of job creation reflecting a positive mood around continuing market expansion. “Any lingering wintry chills however, were attributed to the continuing rise in input prices. This month, the impact of the weak pound combined with a shortage of some raw materials meant cost inflation remained at one of its highest levels since records began. Consequently, suppliers were squeezed and delivery times were lengthened, the latter to the second-greatest extent since May 2011.”

Hesse’s fantastic acrylic resin lacquer – a clear winner

In 2016 Hesse Lignal raised the standard once again with the launch of its FantasticColor system. From its state-of-the-art laboratories in Germany, Hesse developed a product that in just one single step uses up to 60% more material applied to vertical surfaces in comparison to other similar coloured lacquer systems.

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 94

Hesse Fantastic-Color is a pigmented, lightfast and very well balanced two-component PU acrylic resin lacquer with impressive opacity and a fast drying time. Its increased opacity achieves greater coverage than competitors and a rapid intermediate drying time of two hours is a big step forward in the marketplace. The product’s particular distinguishing features are its outstanding ability to stay on vertical surfaces together with excellent levelling on horizontal surfaces. The lacquer can be applied directly to MDF edges without using special primers and fillers. The desired result is therefore achieved much faster, saving both time and effort. What this means for finishing is significantly reduced processing times allowing for greater production but without compromising on quality. Hesse strives to be at the forefront of wood coatings and once more it has surpassed standards for heat, chemical and scratch resistance with the Fantastic-Color. The company’s lacquers are independently tested and certified, resulting in a system which meets the IMO standard for coatings applicable to seagoing vessels as well as Class B1 fire certification. In respect of the wellbeing of the sprayers as well as the end users, Hesse’s FantasticColor formulation is free of wood preservatives, toxic heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers, formaldehyde, CMRs category 1A and 1B and volatile aromatic and halogenated organic

compounds. The result is a first class coloured lacquer finish with an impressive feel. Its surface invites the touch and the senses are simultaneously stimulated with colour and smoothness. Following the successful launch of FantasticColor in Europe, Hesse Lignal has utilised its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute the product in the UK. The uniquely close relationship between Hesse and Redwood ensures that customers buying this system have the benefit of strong technical back-up. The highly trained staff at Redwood can answer queries on applications over the phone and on site if required. Improved productivity through software for bespoke furniture

CAD+T interior design and manufacturing solutions The interior design and joinery business has always been a tough business but especially so in the last few years – competition has increased significantly. As the material prices and labour costs are more or less maxed out, the industry is now about to improve workflows which is only possible with software and better organisation. CAD+T offers the tools to improve productivity. The software is built on AutoCAD and the CAD+T add-on gives draftsmen the possibility of drawing the parts directly in 3D even though they can still work on 2D. On these parts, information about materials, finishes, edges, profiles, hardware, etc, will be saved. So the drawing consists of more than only lines and text – it actually

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 96

understands what is being drawn. This fact gives users the opportunity to receive from the shop-floor drawing automatically cutting list, bill of materials, costing, labour hour calculation, CNC data and a lot more. There are different production lists available, whatever the specific requirements – from material order reports to packing lists. CNC Lots of joineries have already invested into CNC woodworking machines in order to speed up work and improve quality. But obviously these machines need to receive the right information in order to process the job. This information can be created automatically from CAD+T software. CAD+T specifically

developed a highly sophisticated interface for CNC machines. The interface separates all pieces according to material and sends the information directly to the machines. The necessary working method according to the different materials, oversizes, starting points, tools and all other required information, will be chosen automatically. CAD+T offers interfaces to all common three- and five-axis CNC machines on the market as well as tools for

lipping, vacuum positions. A specialised nesting tool generates required information for nesting machines even recognising graining directions of related parts. CAD+T has its head office in Austria and was founded in 1990. With seven branches in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Australia, UAE and Thailand and more than 60 employees, CAD+T is an ideal partner to improve company processes and know-how. cadt-solutions.com

When Fercell approached London Reclaimed, a London charity, offering to supply and fit a dust extract system it knew a great partnership would ensue. It was just over a year ago when Mark Fletcher, MD of Fercell, the recycling and ventilation engineering company, came across London Reclaimed after reading about it in a local magazine. Inspired by the work it was doing and the charity’s ethos, Mark wanted to help it take its company even further on its journey and install a bespoke dust extraction system. London Reclaimed started as an employment charity for 16-25-year-olds in South East London. It now operates two businesses under its umbrella – Goldfinch Furniture and Lumberjack Café. Goldfinch Furniture provides a paid trainee programme where young people can work and earn for a year, producing unique, custom-made furniture from locally-sourced timber. After a year they are given support to find their next job using these new skills or a college course to further their education. Goldfinch’s success in contributing to a sustainable future for the planet is local and very unique. When a tree falls down in London Goldfinch lumber it where it lays before the timber is naturally milled and kiln dried on site. It ensures that the cycle is complete by planting a new tree somewhere in London, where needed. To help improve Goldfinch’s efficiency as a business and provide a comfortable working environment for its young, dedicated employees, Fercell suggested a solution to exactly fit the needs of Goldfinch, its operation and its employees. That solution consisted of a centralised duct system with a multi breather dust collector, all of which was installed and commissioned by Fercell engineers. ›

Goldfinch’s original local exhaust ventilation arrangements were a series of small mobile filter units, which took up valuable floor space and were noisy, when all in operation. By installing a correctly sized and balanced centralised galvanised steel ducting system and a single dust collectors Goldfinch has increased its usable floor space and improved the working environmental with improved dust control and noise reduction. “To be able to help a business like London Reclaimed, who are helping young people get onto the business ladder and setting them up for the future is a real honour,” says Fercell’s Mark Fletcher. He continues: “They are investing in the workforce of tomorrow and in the environment, which for us to be a part of and able to support is extremely rewarding.” For Goldfinch, whose overall vision and ethos is centred on investing in its staff’s health and their future, the ventilation system was a no-brainer. “Working alongside Fercell has been an absolute pleasure.” says Mike at Goldfinch. “We have some exciting plans for the future – including expanding the milling side of the business and investing further in the Grade A hard wood that’s left to rot in London. Fercell are absolutely 100% in our future plans to grow our business.” fercell.com londonreclaimed.co.uk

New Axminster Industrial Series bandsaw The SBW3501H3 bandsaw may be compact in size, but it packs a real punch with an unrivalled 14” cutting depth capacity. Being part of Axminster’s Industrial Series you can be sure of its build quality and strength. The machine offers the ideal solution for the larger woodworking workshop or educational facility at an economical price. This upgraded bandsaw is fully compliant with both the requirements of BS 4163:2014 (educational establishments) and PUWR98 (workplace) regulations. This model will also appeal to those requiring the very highest safety and performance standards in their workplace. Manufactured in thick gauge welded steel and cast iron to a very high standard, this bandsaw is fitted with a key released emergency stop switch and safety interlocked doors for safe operation. The upgraded electro-magnetically braked motor is robust, smooth and powerful enough for all workshop tasks. Features include balanced, cast iron wheels, heavy duty bearing blade guides throughout and a very rigid, full size cast iron table with tilt adjustment of -5° to

F&JP_282pre.1.indd 102

+45° carried out by a rack and pinion mechanism for ease of adjustment. Blade changing is made easy with a quick release blade tensioning lever which speeds up the blade changing process greatly. The rip fence has a cast iron bracket and features a tall fence rail, which can also be fitted in a different position to allow thin work to be guided properly. A cam lock clamps the fence to the guide rail securely and there is a magnifying lens to make the scale easy to read. The included mitre fence is a precision unit, fitted with an indexed position stop pin for easy and precise angle setting. Dust extraction is via two 100mm ports, enabling dust-free use when connected to a suitable extractor. There is a convenient tool and accessory storage cupboard in the lower half of the chassis. Current price is £1416.63 ex vat (prices may be subject to change without notice). Leasing options are available for this machine.
