Comment In this issue, we feature the first of two previews ahead of the W Exhibition and Elements show at the NEC, which starts in less than eight weeks time! One of the core tenets expressed by Montgomery – the organiser of the event – is education, so it is focusing on the efforts of a number of trade bodies to address the significant skills gap affecting the furniture and joinery industry. In recent months, there has been progress in this matter, with FIESTA, the Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance spearheading efforts along with the British Furniture Manufacturers, the British Woodworking Federation, National Association of Shopfitters and Didac Training College. All these parties will be at the W Exhibition and Elements show to help businesses find training related options and solutions.

Elsewhere, the latest manifesto from the British Furniture Confederation is seeking to engage Government to ensure that its policies and initiatives support a thriving furniture, furnishings and bed sector. The manifesto has been sent to ministers across Government, as well as shadow ministers and key members of the All Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group, with calls for action to bolster the industry, including: clarity on Brexit negotiations; enhanced long-term export support; increased support for training to resolve the growing skills gap; the maintenance and policing of safety standards and regulations; and engagement with, and support for, moving towards a more circular economy. Do enjoy the issue, and also refer to our website (www.furnitureproduction.net) and our widely-followed Twitter feeds – @FurnitureProdEd and @FurnitureProdAd – for further information and updates.

Blum enjoys another year of growth increasing turnover by €50m The Blum Group upped its turnover by 2.8% in the 2017/2018 financial year thanks to products and services that are consistently geared to furniture manufacturers’ needs, international market presence and great flexibility on the part of employees. Manufacturer of fittings, Blum, increased its turnover by 2.8% in comparison to the previous year and recorded €1,839,42million in turnover in the business year ended 30th June 2018. Blum achieved 48% of its turnover in the EU area and 15% in the USA. The fittings specialist delivers its products to more than 120 countries all over the world and is represented internationally by 30 subsidiaries and representative offices. It has been decided that the third generation will take the helm of Julius Blum GmbH on 1st July. On average, Blum employed 7509 worldwide, which is a growth of 368 employees in comparison to the previous year. In addition, 94 new apprentices will start a technical course of training with Blum Austria starting in September. Blum says most markets in Western Europe achieved an increase in turnover in the 2017/2018 financial year. The company benefited from a recovery in South European markets and recorded ongoing positive developments in Eastern Europe. The first production hall of the

new Stamping Centre (Plant 8) in Dornbirn was completed. The high bay warehouse with 11,600 places will go into operation at the same time. The second production hall should be completed by April 2019. Employees will move into the new office building at Plant 2 in Hoechst from September onwards. The extension to the office building and warehouse in Portugal should be completed by September

this year. Investments of the Blum Group totalled €216m in the 2017/2018 business year. The transition to the next generation in Julius Blum GmbH will be initiated at the start of this financial year. Managing directors Gerhard E Blum, Philipp Blum and Martin Blum have jointly managed the company since 1st July 2018. They are supported by longstanding employees Urs Bolter

(managing director of Blum International Consulting) and Gerhard Humpeler (head of finance). The management team and the corporate management group will gradually take over the responsibilities of Gerhard E Blum as of the start of the 2018/2019 financial year. After the transition on 1st July 2019, Gerhard E, and his brother Herbert Blum, will continue to jointly manage the holding company of the Blum Group. “We will approach the new business year with restrained optimism. There are many question marks and there is a great deal of uncertainty about future developments. On the one hand, the Brexit process in Europe has still not been clarified and it is uncertain what direction the EU should take. “On the other hand, we are deeply concerned about growing national interests, eg the mutual imposition of tariffs and an escalation of economic sanctions,” says Gerhard E Blum, providing a prudent forecast of the forthcoming financial year. www.blum.com

A fine day for all at the Qwood Technical Afternoon and Beer Festival In July, a number of key suppliers to the joinery industry sponsored a technical afternoon and beer festival at the factory and offices of Qwood in Oldham. Over 50 guests from the timber window and joinery industry attended. They all experienced a day where they were able to hear technical presentations from leading suppliers, and then relax with food and beer whilst listening to the live music laid on by the host Qwood. It was a fantastic day. The sun shone and in the summer warmth the guests mingled around exhibitions from the major suppliers, set up in the spacious grounds around the Qwood factory. Selected technical presentations were held for joiners wishing to learn about the latest products and services that can help their businesses to grow. In addition, there were guided tours of the Qwood factory. The LEAN manufacturing processes, which have been the backbone for the innovation of Qwood composite beads and bars,

Plan c pages.indd 10

was much in evidence. Guests were able to see for themselves how efficient system and production processes help the smooth flow of an order from receipt right through to despatch – the same day if required! The sponsoring suppliers who helped to lay on this unique event were: Qwood, British Woodworking Federation (BWF), Wood Window

Alliance (WWA), OH Door & Panel, Sash & Door Hardware (SDH), Deventer, International Timber, Stegherr, Teknos, John Penny Woodworking Machinery, Remmers, and Whitehill Tools. All were delighted with the response to this idea of providing timber window manufacturers and joiners with an opportunity to get up to date with industry developments. At the same time

relax and network amongst friends in a friendly environment. Once the opportunity for the guests to absorb the suppliers’ product information had passed, then the food, drink and entertainment began. Well into the evening, as the sun was setting, the occasion was enhanced by the sounds of some great music from 52 Skidoo. Modelled on a 1920’s band from Harlem in New York, the band played classic pieces from that time. Feedback of the afternoon and evening has been fantastic. Sean Parnaby, MD of West Port said: “The whole event was very informative and entertaining. It was good to see so many sponsors with good products all in one place.” Also, Gary Ewing of SDH commented: “It was a really positive day. The way it was organised was really professional and we got some good leads from the networking opportunities that were created.” Tim Hayes, marketing manager of Qwood, remarked afterwards: “This novel idea of bringing suppliers and joiners together has really worked. We are very pleased that so many guests were able to join us. From all the feedback we have had they obviously enjoyed the mix of industry information and social networking. The fine weather also helped!” 0161 627 4222 quantumprofilesystems.com

12 Understanding intellectual property Jim Pearson of Abel & Imray, a firm of UK and European patent attorneys and trade mark attorneys, busts some of the myths that still surround the subject of intellectual property in this last in a series of articles written on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA).

Ten myths about IP busted

O

ver the last five articles, we’ve covered the basics of IP in the UK and abroad, how IP can make and save you money, why ownership of IP is important to get right, and issues surrounding enforcement/infringement of IP. As a reminder of some of the issues we’ve already covered and to introduce a few new ones, this last article aims to put right some of the more common myths surrounding IP.

Plan c pages.indd 12

MYTH ONE Copyright needs to be registered in the UK for it to be useful/enforceable Copyright arises automatically through the creation of a work. If ever you need to assert your copyright against a third party, you will need to prove that you (or your company) owns the relevant rights. This will typically include evidence of creation of the original work. Over the years, practitioners have advised sending material to yourself in a tamper-proof envelope, lodging materials with your bank, your accountant, your lawyer (even your patent attorney!) or registering the work with an appropriate independent body offering that service. There are now online providers offering (informal/unofficial) copyright registration services in the UK. In the US, there is a requirement to register copyright material before taking legal action against a third party for copyright infringement. However, in the UK there is no legal requirement to register copyright in order for it to exist, nor is there an official register of copyright works in the UK (see www.gov.uk/ copyright). It is best practice to keep good records of the

creation of important copyright works (and other IP rights for that matter), in case evidence is ever needed in future. Keeping original dated design documents, as a minimum, is strongly advised. There may be benefits in taking further steps, such as those described above, but there is no legal requirement to do so. Take advice on the matter if you’re not sure or at least weigh up the costs versus the benefits of registering copyright in the ways described above. MYTH TWO You can’t patent methods of manufacture If the method of manufacture is novel and involves an inventive step over what’s already in the public domain then it will be patentable. The requirement for an inventive step is just that. An inventive leap is not required for this. For something to be inventive, it must not be completely obvious. A new method of manufacture will be different over the closest comparable previously known method in one or more ways, providing one or more differences. If those one or more differences represent a useful or beneficial improvement, then there will

24/07/2018 10:52

13 normally be ways to argue that those differences represent an inventive step and obtain useful patent protection. MYTH THREE If you’ve failed to keep something secret you won’t now be able to protect it It is true that if you’ve failed to keep something secret you won’t now be able to obtain a valid patent in the UK that covers what you’ve previously disclosed non-confidentially. However, protection in other countries may still be possible. Certain countries, including the US for example, provide a grace period, typically of 12 months. Provided that a patent application is filed within the grace period in such countries, the prior disclosure by the patent applicant won’t count against the patent application (unlike the situation in the UK). It is also worth remembering that UK and EU registered designs can be validly filed within such a 12-month grace period. MYTH FOUR Patents are always the best form of IP Patents protect new technology and can provide valuable monopoly rights over innovative concepts. However, patents can be expensive and require full disclosure (and publication) of all the new things that make the technology clever. There are alternatives to patents that are often better for a company. Know-how, when recognised as such and kept confidential in the form of trade secrets, can be a powerful way of retaining valuable information inside a company. Trade secrets require careful management, but can provide cost-effective protection forever (patents typically last for no longer than 20 years from the filing date). Registered designs protect the appearance of a product, and aside from the product itself, cover things such as packaging, get-up, graphics, and surface decoration. Registered designs last up to 25 years from registration, again potentially providing monopoly rights that last longer than a patent could. The process for registration is generally quick and straightforward and therefore not as costly, or time-consuming, as obtaining a patent, which will typically undergo rigorous examination before eventually being granted, typically several years after the original filing date.

“Registered designs protect the appearance of a product, and aside from the product itself, cover things such as packaging, get-up, graphics, and surface decoration”

Plan c pages.indd 13

MYTH FIVE Most of my sales are abroad so a UK patent won’t be of use to me A UK patent for an innovative product won’t stop someone making the patented product in France or selling it in France. It will however facilitate blocking of importation of such foreign goods into the UK. It will also enable you to stop manufacturing in the UK by the competition even if the sales will be abroad. If your sales abroad are generating profit that is taxed in the UK, then the corporation tax paid for such profits can be significantly reduced under the UK’s Patent Box tax regime. It doesn’t matter if the sales are abroad, although there are other requirements that a company needs to be aware of – see https://www.gov.uk/guidance/ corporation-tax-the-patent-box. If you’re unable to access the market in the UK, perhaps other companies have a better prospect. Could such companies licence the UK patent from you in return for royalty payments?

MYTH SIX Obtaining IP protection outside the UK is prohibitively expensive Figures of £100k+ are often cited for the costs of adequately protecting an innovation internationally. Such figures are typically quoted for the life-time cost (over 20 years) of obtaining and maintaining patent protection in several European and non-European countries. Such extensive and long-term protection is often not appropriate for a UK SME looking to protect its interests in a few countries for the short-term. By way of example, it is possible – even with professional fees included – to obtain five years of registered design protection that will protect against copying of a product, across the whole of the EU, for less than £1k.   MYTH SEVEN I’ve paid someone to do something for me, so I own the IP For anyone not being an employee of your company, if there’s no agreement in place, any rights (such as copyright, unregistered design right and patent rights) resulting from the work done by others will typically be owned by them or their employer not you/your company. This can be a pain if a designer has created a new logo, website content or the like and you don’t own the relevant rights, but can be very bad news if patent or registered design rights are of interest and one or more of the contributors own rights that your company needs in order to obtain valid protection. MYTH EIGHT Enforcement of IP is so expensive there’s no point in getting involved in the system If your company needs to take someone to court for infringing a patent or other IP right, there will be significant costs, typically running into hundreds of thousands of pounds if a highvalue case has to be taken all the way to a final judgement.

However, the vast majority of IP disputes never get anywhere near a court-room. Most IP disputes can be dealt with via negotiation or mediation and without the need for formal court proceedings. There are also IP insurance products available – see www.gov.uk/guidance/ intellectual-property-insurance for further guidance. We featured Roper Rhodes - see above - one of the UK’s leading independent suppliers of bathroom furniture and products, in an earlier article to illustrate how Roper Rhodes was able to enforce its IP rights against a competitor who had copied its Ascension cabinet. Without going anywhere near a court, Roper Rhodes enjoyed a resounding success in the matter with the following remedies: • product withdrawn • remaining stock returned to China • £6k contribution to costs • list of customers supplied with the product to date (not that many as it happened). MYTH NINE Brexit is going to make pan-European IP issues a total nightmare Obtaining a European patent is administered by the European Patent Office under the European Patent Convention. The European Patent Office and the European Patent Convention will not be affected by the UK withdrawing from the EU, so it will be business as usual. As for EU-governed IP rights such as EU trade marks and EU registered designs, there will be changes. It is now as clear as it can be, in advance of finally agreed legislation, that the owners of such EU trade marks and designs will continue to enjoy full protection in the UK

24/07/2018 10:52

14 Understanding intellectual property

IP – a reminder of the basics • Trade secrets – a way of protecting valuable knowhow • Patents – protect technical innovations • Designs – protect the 2D/3D shape or appearance of an article or surface decoration • Trade marks – protect brands, company names, logos and the like • Copyright – automatically protects against the copying of original texts, graphic works, photos, software andthe like by others following Brexit. For further information and updates on Brexit and IP, please visit: www.cipa.org.uk/policy-andnews/brexit-updates and www.citma.org.uk/ membership/brexit/brexit. MYTH TEN It’s more cost-effective to do IP without the help of a registered patent attorney We’ve previously discussed how IP can be financially beneficial in various ways, but getting that benefit out does require time, skill and effort to be put in. If you want a valuable asset from your IP, you will need to invest in it and use a professional, whether that’s a patent attorney (see www.cipa.org.uk/find-a-patent-attorney) or a trade mark attorney (www.citma.org.uk/ membership/members_search). An IP right grants the owner exclusivity over certain subject matter for a period of time in certain territories. For example, if a worktop manufacturer creates a number of distinctive images for use as surface decoration on worktops and registers those as design registrations in the UK, no other party can then make or sell in the UK identical or similar designs without infringing the design registrations. Competition in relation to the suite of distinctive designs can be limited as competitors are deterred from producing something similar, creating greater demand and enabling the owner of the registered designs to charge a premium for the related products. If however, the IP right has been obtained without the assistance of a patent attorney/ trade mark attorney, there is a significant chance that an informed competitor will be able to find a deficiency in the IP right that will provide a means to work-around the IP right or invalidate

Plan c pages.indd 14

the IP right. Licensing IP to third parties in exchange for royalty payments will only succeed if the strength of the IP is respected by the third party. Without robust IP rights in place, obtained with the assistance of a qualified attorney, the prospects of obtaining healthy licensing revenue will be greatly diminished. When a company is seeking new investment or looking to sell off a part or whole of the business, the protection afforded by the intellectual property rights owned by the business can be seen as valuable assets. If the company has created innovative technology or distinctive brands or exciting products, an investor will typically want to see that such innovative and creative work is properly captured and protected by strong IP rights – and will be more readily convinced of this from the outset if it is seen that IP attorneys have been used to obtain the IP rights. It is unlikely that the IP would have featured so strongly in Ammique Limited’s recent and successful crowd-funding investment round, had they not had professional help in obtaining their IP assets. It will be seen that Ammique’s IP featured as a significant part of their pitch – see www. crowdcube.com/ammique and https://www. crowdcube.com/companies/ammique-ltd for further details. Investors will have been reassured that Ammique, with help from both patent attorneys and trade mark attorneys, secured valuable protection for their innovations, providing exclusivity over branding as well as the technology behind their product.

long term. If an IP asset is not going to enhance the value of your company you shouldn’t be maintaining it. On the other hand if you want IP in your business to be one of the valuable assets of the company, you should be looking to invest now to reap the rewards in the future. It is no surprise to learn that some of the most successful businesses in today’s economy are those that have historically invested in their IP and continue to do so. www.abelimray.com

CONCLUSION Obtaining and registering IP is not always a cheap process but can pay dividends in the

22 W Exhibition and Elements preview Maestro Digital Systems is the platform of latest generation digital solutions and services created by SCM to dramatically streamline the daily work of operators by improving their performance, in line with its ‘Work simple. Work digital’ concept.

SCM launches Maestro connect – its new IoT platform SCM’s Maestro Digital Systems platform is perfectly integrated with SCM technologies, designed to render each phase of the production process simpler and faster, for the small woodworking workshop to the large multinational company. Among these digital solutions, Maestro connect is the innovative Internet of Things (IoT) system in response to the latest Industry 4.0 requirements. As stated by Luigi De Vito, the SCM division director: “Creating a Smart Factory means creating an intercommunicating and intelligent factory, where different and physically distant entities – machines in different workshops, different operators in the same production chain linked by a common flow of information, etc – are integrated. “The new generation SCM machines are intelligent, automated and connected machines, able to collect machine data through smart components such as sensors, microprocessors, software and connectivity systems and can then combine with data from different and complementary sources, from inside or outside the company. Software and sophisticated algorithms will be able to extract valuable information for customers from these data, including, for example, the probability of a machine downtime in the next 24 hours.” Maestro connect is the heart of the smart factory concept. It offers personalised micro-services by sustaining the customer’s daily activities by improving the use and availability of machines and systems by up to 25% and reducing unprogrammed out-of-order costs by up to 55%. “Maestro connect is a platform for collecting and analysing data retrieved from SCM machines to increasingly monitor and optimise

costs and be more competitive by increasing sales and consequently its workforce. To promote digital transformation processes for companies, SCM has made major investments, in line with the huge importance it places on research and development. The group invests 7% of its turnover every year in R&D. The result is its Maestro Digital Systems platform of digital products and services seamlessly integrated with the solid process technologies for SCM woodworking: – Maestro xplore is the Virtual Reality 3D Integrated Cell Simulation system: an application that allows production processes to be simulated by allowing the dynamic productivity of the entire line to be calculated. – Maestro smartech is a technology that uses smart, webconnected glasses as a mobile device. The glasses are literally a computer you can wear as they are equipped with wireless technology that allows the operator to transmit what they are looking at to a remote technician in real time. This hands-free exchange of images, screen views and

documents helps enormously to facilitate and speed up maintenance operations. – Maestro eye-M is a latest generation console for manmachine interaction that is ergonomic, strong and durable. Fitted with a smart, man-machine interface (HMI), the console helps operators speed up and simplify

machining and maintenance operations via immediate access functions that allow them to find information more quickly. – Maestro Suite is an open software package that can be used in tandem with external software to integrate and automatically exchange real information between the user’s various systems.

SCM’s major investment is one of the highlights of an extraordinary year for the group, closer and closer to the target of €700m turnover and with constantly growing staff numbers – currently at a headcount of over 3600 units operating both in Italy and in the 20 overseas branches. www.scmgroup.com

Through feed CNC door machining from Essepigi Making its UK debut at W18 is the Essepigi Doormatic Evolution high speed through-feed CNC working centre for door production. Essepigi is a specialist in the area of door production and is able to supply stand alone machines or complete lines with infeed and outfeed handling. Several machines have already been installed in the UK this year by Essepigi’s exclusive UK distributor, JJ Smith. “The Doormatic is the ideal solution if the requirement is for volume production,” says Paul Parker from JJ Smith, “but with the ability to quickly and easily change from one door size to another. “This is a double sided machine, meaning both sides of the door can machined at the same time, thus maximising production output. Typically, on one side, there will be a horizontal router head for hinge recessing and a drilling unit for spot drilling of the hinge screw holes, both of which are CNC controlled. On the opposite side there is a horizontal router head for lock slot/face plate recess along with a vertical router for handle hole and key slot, again all CNC controlled. “Standard features include automatic width setting through the program and the ability to select left hand or right hand configuration of the door. Options include thickness and width taster

Plan c pages.indd 24

for accurate machining control, offline programming and an end milling head to produce the drop seal groove.

“Programming is quick and simple thanks to the dedicated Essepigi Door Software incorporating electronic macro templates for

hinge/lock hardware. Throughput on the Doormatic, machining for three hinges with drilling, lock case slot and faceplate recess on a typical internal flush door would be approximately one door per minute,” explains Paul. “When there is a requirement to also size a door and/or produce an opening for a vision panel or letterbox, then the Doormatic Bridge Evolution is ideal. “The main features of the Evolution Bridge, additional to all above machining capabilities are a vacuum hold down system and an automatic linear tool changer for the vertical three axis router head. The floating router head option gives the facility for precise engraving of designs on to the door face. In terms of production output for a fully machined door, including sizing/drop seal groove / vision panel aperture/lock/hinges an estimated time would be around four to five minutes. “This compares to around 12 minutes if the door is being machined on a conventional flat bed CNC router. Options on both models include barcode or QR code reading for setting up all the required operations and also automatic hinge inserting. These machines are suitable for processing internal flush or panelled doors, fire doors or composite doors,” conculdes Paul. www.jjsmith.co.uk

It’s time for Automaction!

Automaction is the new Biesse concept that represents new technological innovations developed to create new solutions based on automated, interconnected production. Products, no longer prototypes. Actions, not words. Numbers and results! Following the launch of the Winstore automatic magazine, which provides a flexible loading solution for managing job orders in the initial stage of production – sizing and nesting – the company is now offering technologies for managing panel handling during the full production process. Technology, autonomously This new approach is based on the development of smart machines that perform repetitive cycles to increase production efficiency. The company’s spirit of innovation is therefore taking a step forward by offering robotised systems for handling panels, carrying out work in predetermined times but always with the same standard of quality. The use of these solutions helps to simplify processes, optimise machine cycle times, replacing many manual tasks and reducing the risk of panel damage. Therefore, robots are a solution that combines

versatility and efficiency with high investment returns, utilising technologies that are easy to use, with high precision and that can work autonomously. Collaborative robots Biesse also offers collaborative robots that can be used, for example, to handle panels finished by sanding machines in the Viet range. These robots can both move and rotate panels helping to automate loading and unloading processes and are very safe, with contact sensors that impede the movement of the robot in the event of accidental collisions with people or objects. Smart machines, smart factories Customisation and flexibility have become two key requirements in production today and by offering integrated turnkey solutions based on specific production needs, including handling and sorting systems, allows customers to produce finished panels without any operator intervention. “We’ve created Biesse Systems, a team of highly specialised technical and commercial personnel, to offer our customers solutions tailored to their own production needs,” comments Mauro Pede, Biesse Systems. This

team works closely with customers to anticipate and understand their needs from initial concept to final implementation. Additionally, Biesse offers B_Avant, a supervisor for the management of production flow based on machining requirements. Personalised to customer needs, it integrates with existing management systems and software, establishing a two-way data flow: from management and cad-cam processes through to production and back again. It includes a range of features that allow for improvements in production performance, enabling manufacturers to achieve new goals, including: • Reduction in set-up times • Reduction in machine downtime • Reduction in waste • Increase in productivity “Biesse’s ability to help create digital, automated and interconnected factories has become a reality. The firm advantages that our customers see every day are proof of the value that Biesse’s technologies add value to their production processes,” concludes Pede. Biesse’s innovation is today creating digital, automated and interconnected factories are becoming a reality – it’s time for Automaction. www.biesse.com

Nextec by Holz-Her – the simplest CNC solution Holz-Her’s Nextec furniture solution is a complete package comprising machine and specially designed, craftsman-friendly software. A few simple clicks and the push of a button, and the Nextec will create and label each component for your selected cabinet. Hit the ground running without programming; choose from up to 300 cabinets from Nextec’s intuitive Cabinet Select software, decide how many you want, select the material and your connection hardware and you are ready to go. Modifying or customising any item in the library, or even adding your own cabinet is just as simple. The software is designed to enable people who are not skilled in programming to produce furniture, or even an entire kitchen, easily and quickly, and you can start manfacture from the first day the machine arrives. A key feature in making your panel processing more efficient is Holz-Her’s DirectCut. This lasersupported high-speed cutting can turn material remnants into valuable furniture components. The optional two-line laser enables an operator to easily cut one-off pieces to your chosen size, without any programming. Operating just like an automated panel saw, DirectCut gives genuine value to your otherwise wasted off-

Plan c pages.indd 31

cuts. DirectCut enables useful table saw functions, potentially saving you precious floor space and costs. See Holz-Her’s Nextec in action at the W Exhibition. Holz-Her’s zero glue line solutions: without the hassle From the smallest Holz-Her edgebander to their largest production solution, each comes with Holz-Her’s unique and award-winning Glu Jet system as standard, catering for every size and type of business. Be it high gloss or solid wood edging, the system is both flexible and versatile and comes with a three

year warranty. Guaranteed glue line management. This is industrial technology for all – you can now process PUR glue as standard, but without the hassle. As the benchmark for professional cabinet makers, most manufacturers would use PUR, but not all machinery can cope with it. With the Glu Jet ready to use in under four minutes with EVA or PUR, Holz-Her’s unique system is the right solution for any edgebanding requirements. With the new Holz-Her Lumina series comes the option for the LTronic system – the laser edging unit from Holz-Her unbeatable in terms of speed and cost efficiency. The NIR (Near Infrared Radiation) module in Holz-Her’s LTronic unit transfers heat energy quickly and precisely to the specific point required making it ideal for activation of function layers on laser edging. Available in edge heights up to 45mm, the modules are ready to

use as soon as you switch them on – there is no heat-up time or any heat-up phases during the machining process. The complete system operates absolutely silently; a huge advantage over other noisy, costly to run hot air systems. In addition to the Nextec and zero glue line solutions, Holz-Her will also be showing it’s incredibly strong and highly in-demand Sector 1255 wall saw at the show. The Weinig Group will also demonstrate its classical machines expertise with its market leading partner Hofmann. 32 W Exhibition and Elements preview JMJ Woodworking Machinery, one of the UK’s main woodworking machinery suppliers, has recently introduced Harwi Classical to its vast range of new & used woodworking machinery, and is now stocking the Harwi heavy duty crosscut saws, ripsaws and trenching machines.

Harwi – built to last Harwi Holland has been developing and constructing a range of high performance saws since 1960. Each machine manufactured by Harwi is built in accordance with the highly regarded Dutch manufacturing quality standards and requirements. The new heavy duty 450W Cross Cut saw is one of a kind with a huge depth of cut at 205mm, a powered tilting head and LED readouts to the blade movements making it not only incredibly easy to use but also one of the most robust machines of its type on the market. The second machine in the range has been designed exclusively for JMJ Woodworking Machinery and their customers. Identifying a gap in the market for a heavy-duty trenching machine, JMJ encouraged Harwi to produce a universal machine with extra wide guarding and the ability to trench up to 30mm wide in one pass without compromising on safety. The added bonus with this machine is that it can be easily switched between a crosscut saw and trencher in very little time

Plan c pages.indd 32

without having to alter their guarding. This machine can also be ordered with bespoke tooling, depending on the customer’s requirements. Next, is Harwi’s range of heavy duty ripsaws and cross cut saws that take the build quality of old-school traditional machinery and bring it into the 21st century, with ease of use and safety at the heart of their design. Harwi has spent many years researching and developing their products to an extremely high standard hence their motto, Built to last! The full range of heavy duty saws can be seen and demonstrated at JMJ’s newly expanded showroom in Yorkshire where over 200 new and used machines are available from stock. tapio - your reliable partner for a digital future The woodworking industry is rapidly changing and in a world where technology is the main driving force of the future, digitalisation is key. Positioned at the forefront of Homag’s developments lies a digital platform specifically designed for manufacturers to gain more efficiencies from production as well as representing a universal transformation within the industry. Unveiled for the first time at Ligna 2017, and more recently shown at the Holz-Handwerk and Xylexpo exhibitions, Homag presented its latest technological partner, tapio – a cloud-based service built in partnership with Microsoft. Working across the entire manufacturing chain, the platform opens up the countless possibilities of networked production to all workshops. Whether it’s a small workshop, medium-sized operation or a global co-operation, tapio ensures the accessibility of true transparency and optimallycontrolled production. Providing live update Pooling knowledge of mechanical engineering, servicing, software and ultimately the status of machinery, tapio provides operators with live updates of their complete manufacturing facility. Accessible through a mobile phone app, tablet or even a smart watch, automatic alert notifications are sent highlighting where detailed attention is required. The platform also reports when future maintenance requirements are needed as well as sending warnings when a critical value exceeds or falls below a certain level, ensuring peak production times are not compromised. The data which tapio produces allows companies to monitor their entire production process, ensuring the performance of all equipment is maximised at all times. ServiceBoard – fast support at your fingertips When error messages arise during production, operators sometimes find it difficult to solely rectify the problem and require the assistance of the Homag Service centre. ServiceBoard offers a simple, yet effective remote solution to ensure

tapio function prevents machine downtime and service costs.

faults can be identified quickly with the aid of video diagnoses, ultimately avoiding any unplanned interruptions to production. Electronic layout plans, 3D models and drawings can easily be exchanged enabling better error identification via mobile video whilst the operators are in front of the machine. Operators are also able to easily keep up to date with machine maintenance by having all relevant documentation to hand as well as the opportunity to electronically order any parts via the online shop. With simple machine prediction the ServiceBoard also shows upcoming maintenances within the calendar function.

DataSave – automatic data back-up Whether resources are short or simply due to a lack of IT knowledge, data back-up is sometimes overlooked within businesses, yet in situations where a machine has a malfunction this can be fatal for productivity: in some extreme cases, loss of data can lead to a complete system restart. DataSave ensures that data losses and related problems are a thing of the past. With this mobile solution, machine production data is guaranteed to be automatically and securely saved within the central cloud of tapio. Freely accessible at all times, this

MachineBoard – optimum machine operation Delays in production can have a crippling effect to manufacturing and are unwelcomed within any environment, yet the effective monitoring of machine operations can prevent any unnecessary delays. Nobody works more closely nor is more involved with machines than the operators themselves so, the opportunity to tend to machines in good time and continuously react flexibly is an unquestionable advantage. Whether the remaining time of a CNC program needs to be checked, impending set-up processes need to be viewed or remotely activating the glue unit on an edge bander, the MachineBoard’s capabilities are indisputably true time savers. Automatic push notifications can be displayed on smartphones or smartwatches allowing operators to act as soon as manual intervention is required. 48 Saws and tooling Homag’s focus for the year is creating a range of solutions using both automated and networked production in order to increase efficiencies and simplify production for even small- to medium-sized businesses.

Homag Sawteq Technology: fully automated and networked cutting processes In order to simplify the machinery range, Homag has overhauled its portfolio so that each machine name now clearly explains its function. Under this new policy, this means that all of Homag’s saws, for example, come under the Sawteq banner. As well as a new name, the machines have had a redesign with new features and a fresh, contemporary look. The Sawteq B-200 – entry level As part of the group’s drive for clarity and simplicity, Homag has combined the features of its two previous HPP and HPL saws to create the Sawteq B-200. Historically, only the HPL models featured a lifting table however, the new B-200 is an entry level, horizontal panel dividing saw available both with and without an automatic lifting table as standard. The two versions of the Sawteq B-200 feature a blade projection of 60mm, with options for higher projections available. The model with the integrated lifting table increases throughput. It can be fed by forklift truck, with entire books of panels that are then singly and automatically pushed onto the rear machine table for the cutting process. This not only saves time, but also improves ergonomics and

speeds up the production process. As well as an automated lifting table, the B-200 is available with many extras including the destacking module – LITE. This features an integrated assistance graphic which always indicates the correct destacking location. There is also the option to have intelliGuide basic on the Sawteq B-200. With this, LED signals at the cutting line show the operator the next work steps directly on the saw, minimising the need to look at the control screen and thus reducing errors. The Sawteq B-200 can be equipped with 800mm wide air cushion tables – instead of the standard 600mm – ideal for the

handling of large and heavy panels. To increase output even further, the saw can be equipped with 95mm saw blade projection – this is in addition to the existing options of 60 or 80mm saw blade projections. Sawteq B-320 flexTec – award-winning production The Sawteq B-320 flexTec is an award-winning automated cutting cell which revolutionises batch size 1 production using a robotic arm. Providing the basis for creating highly flexible cutting patterns, the B-320 is designed specifically for batch size 1 production. The saw procedure is fully automated with all handling processes, including removing the

part from the cell, being handled by the robotic arm. The Sawteq B-320 flexTec is available as a stand-alone solution and also with a high level of interlinking, addressing the needs of both the trade- and industry-size manufacturers. The latest version of the B-320 flexTec comes with the option of including fully automatic parts destacking onto lifting tables. The big advantage of this feature is that it opens up the possibility of periodically unmanned operation for the non-interlinked version. This is achieved by a newly developed algorithm for the destacking software. Using this software, the robot independently

B-320 flexTec include automatic outfeed via roller conveyors; lifting tables for automatic destacking in the working range of the robot, or combinations of the two.

Redefining the human-machine interaction Up until now, the saw has determined the production sequence, expecting certain actions from the machine operator. Homag is reversing this relationship by making cutting solutions react intelligently to the operator and guiding them through the processing in an optimal way. Both the entry level Sawteq B-200 and the B-320 flexTec saws are tapio-ready and so can take advantage of the innovative, cloudbased high performance software including innovations such as CADmatic 5 and intelliDivide – the advanced optimisation software. Launched at the Holz-Handwerk trade fair in March, these solutions are driving this human-machine interaction change and delivering maximum productivity and efficiencies. The ultra-modern high-end software CADmatic 5 saw controller uses the innovative powerTouch operation with appealing graphical assistance displays to ensure totally intuitive operation and fast, easy handling. This software ‘thinks’ ahead, showing the next work step on the flat screen monitor until this step has been executed. Almost all Homag saws are now fitted with this saw controller – from the small Sawteq B-130 right up to the top model Sawteq B-600.

“Both the entry level Sawteq B-200 and the B-320 flexTec saws are tapio-ready and so can take advantage of the innovative, cloud-based high performance software including innovations such as CADmatic 5 and intelliDivide”

“These saws epitomise the Homag Group’s approach to machine and software development. The aim is to make advanced automisation and control available to even the smallest of woodworking shops,” claims Homag UK managing director Simon Brooks. He concludes, “We are looking forward to showcasing all the Homag innovations at this year’s industry event, W18 – which promises to be far and away the most exciting and game-changing show yet.” For a demonstration of any of the latest machinery or software, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

50 Installations The thrills keep on coming at Lawcris, as a Homag KAL 370 edgebander arrives from Germany this month, adding to its already-impressive machinery portfolio.

Lawcris invests in state-of-the-art technology to provide customers with the ultimate service

Lawcris’ new KAL 370 edgebander from Homag

For panel products experts, Lawcris, having the latest décors is a given, but to ensure that the company stays at the cutting edge, Lawcris have gone the extra mile. Huge investments in the latest CNC machinery have this year proven a savvy move for the Leeds-based, family-run business. The latest in a slew of investments over the past couple of years sees Lawcris’s Creative CNC taking on yet another piece of brand new, state-of-the-art machinery – this time, a KAL 370 edgebander from Homag. The edgebander joins a new Homag BHX 500 multi-borer and two new Holzma beam saws, giving Lawcris an enviable machine portfolio. With all of this new kit, Lawcris’ Creative CNC factory cuts an impressive figure, adding to its reputation for reliable quality and speedy service, making it the ideal partner for modern furniture and cabinetry manufacturers in need of an extension to its own production capacity. CNC manager Stuart Hall says: “It’s crucial that our customers have an organisation behind them that can deliver everything they want, exactly when they want it. We’ve built up a lot of trust and sales are growing –we simply cannot risk letting any of our customers down. We want to show our customers how we can work together to

deliver precisely what they need.” And precision is the watchword, indeed. The new KAL 370 edgebander offers more accuracy than ever before. An automated in-feed allows for narrower edging to be applied with ease. Speed and accuracy go hand in hand with feed speeds of 30m per minute, plus a tiltable grooving unit allowing for

52 Installations In 2005, we reported on the growing success of Staffordshire-based HMS Joinery after the company’s move into staircase production with Masterwood. We revisit the story to see how the business has fared.

Masterwood helping stair company to grow further

Below: HMS owner Harry Murray (left) with workshop manager Craig Avramovic and Atlas XL

HMS Joinery, based in Newcastle under Lyme, was set up in 1990 and grew to a workforce of 30. Although it became successful in winning contracts from national house builders, the staff, including owner, Harry Murray, were regularly working seven days a week in order to get the work out. “Using traditional methods to make staircases is so labour intensive, we had to come in every day to keep up with the orders, which was taking its toll on everyone,” says Harry. “Due to all the overtime that was being paid out, it was eating up the profits, the long-term future of the business looked uncertain,” he adds. The turnaround in HMS’s fortunes began when it bought a Masterwood Atlas XL CNC machining centre in 2002. It took over the production of the staircases, replacing a semiautomatic trenching machine and the need for other tasks to be carried out by hand. It boosted profitability by more than 30%, and by cutting out the need for substantial amounts of overtime it still allowed a 40% increase in production. It used to take a day to produce a standard staircase with kite winders, which was now being done in about three hours. In 2005 the company was producing between 50 and 60 staircases per week, based on five and a half working days, with

Plan c pages.indd 52

minimal overtime. The CNC was supplied with MasterStair, Masterwood’s own CAD/CAM software for the quick and easy design of staircases, producing drawings, cutting sheets, and a CNC program for each component. As well as being ideal for bespoke work, the MasterStair software really comes into its own with batch staircase production. “The bottom line is that we are saving hugely on overtime payments, which has made the business far more profitable,” says Harry. “Our customers are impressed with both the fast service we now provide and the first class quality of work. We can now take on large batch orders with confidence, knowing that we can meet the delivery dates. We are able to build up batches of stairs in advance, we are no longer constantly working under pressure.” When the recession hit the house building market in 2008/2009 there was a big drop in demand for stairs. Like many large manufacturers, HMS had a hard time finding the same level of work that the factory was geared up for. In mid-2009 the company changed to HMS Staircases and added a second CNC, a Masterwood Project 400. This was to a higher specification so that it could be used for other products like windows, doors, as well as stairs. Within a short time of the second

machine arriving, the house market started to grow again and it was back to more and more stairs. Following various discussions in 2017 between HMS and Masterwood it was decided a third CNC was required as the company was now back working 24/7 to keep up with its orders. Before the third machine arrived a new factory became available in nearby Stoke-on-Trent, the new Project 460 was set up here in August 2017 and over the following months machines and work was gradually moved from the old factory to the new. The new workshop has allowed the three Masterwood CNC machines to be in a line producing all the strings, newels, winder and special treads, plus newel caps from the string offcuts. “The new works has allowed us to increase production due to the better layout and more space, everything has become more efficient” says workshop manager

Craig Avramovic. Separate rooms now set up allow balustrading to be fully assembled and a new spray shop has also been added.” The Project 460 is a 5200mm bed length and can take tooling up to 250mm diameter, plus other options including a horizontal router, a fourth axis – extra tooling positions can easily-added at any time if found to be required. The new machines are all lined up now with the centre machine being the 16-year-old Atlas K that still works away every day. Masterwood has worked with the customer to put together a video of the new works showing the whole stair production from materials arriving to the finished stairs being loaded for delivery. This will soon be available as a link and showing on the Masterwood YouTube page. Masterwood GB 01293 402700 www.masterwood.com HMS Staircases 01782 825880

54 Installations Made by Greg Cox has steadily added to his roster of Felder Group UK machinery to help him improve the quality, consistency of the company’s output.

A reliance on Felder Group machinery pays dividends for bespoke furniture manufacturer Based in Leyton, East London, Greg Cox studied fine art and started his career as a set builder before starting up his own company in 2011 making fitted furniture, wardrobes and kitchens all from his workshop in East London. Greg explains: “I saw some furniture and thought, I could make that and it had a big price tag so I thought I would give it ago and it has evolved naturally from making small pieces into what I make today”. In 2012 Greg purchased his first machines from the Felder Group UK an A3-31 planerthicknesser and a N4400 bandsaw from the Hammer range. “A friend of mine had a Hammer planer-thicknesser and I was blown away, you could take this rough bit of wood, put it through the planer and it comes out this beautiful piece. I went straight online and found a review for the Hammer A3-31, which I purchased because it had such great reviews and I then got a bandsaw at the same time”. Since then, Greg has added to his collection, purchasing a K3 winner panel saw, which has been upgraded to a Felder K 700 S as the business has grown, as well as buying an RL 200 dust extractor, a FAT 300 work table, and most

recently, a Felder F 700 Z spindle moulder. “The spindle moulder is amazing,” says Greg, “we have digital rise and fall on this machine as well as the table saw – and being able to get it that accurate is amazing! It has allowed us to make new things like handles and edge pulls as well as our own mouldings. It’s made everything much easier and with the power feeder it’s a lot safer.” Speaking about his FAT 300 work table, Greg says: “I’ve wanted it for years – I like the fact it’s a work bench, it’s a table for storing stuff on, you can finish things on it, you can change the height and wheel it around, I can make it the same height as my van, slide everything onto it, wheel it into my workshop, pump it up and slide it onto my bench. After that, I can use it as an infeed or outfeed for the planer – it’s so versatile it’s amazing like having an extra pair of hands.” When asked about the service he receives from Felder Group UK, Greg comments: “I like the fact that if everything is with one company, it’s one port of call. If an engineer comes, they can service all the machines in one hit, which is brilliant and makes my life much easier.” www.felder-group.com

Today the company has worldclass manufacturing facilities and almost 50 employees across three buildings. Air Plants Dust Extraction installed the original dust extraction plant in 1999. Various additions and modifications have been made over the years to accommodate the expansions that have taken place at Woodfit Acoustics. With the addition of a new factory area, Woodfit approached Air Plants to discuss its requirements for a new, modern dust extraction plant. In 2017, Air Plants designed, supplied and installed a cyclo filter

60 Installtion According to Gary Tuddenham, managing director of Parabola Workshops: “Quality is everything.” His company, founded in 2013, is a specialist furniture manufacturer, working predominantly with the superyacht industry and residential homes. Based just outside Carlisle and working with designers in London, his work comes in through recommendation.

Kündig sanding solution specified by workshop with high-end bespoke requirements “Our work is bespoke, one-offs: we very rarely do anything twice,” Gary explains. “We can be working on a project for up to three to four months on a single item.” To maintain the high standards of quality, Gary recently invested in a made-to-measure Kündig Uniq-S edge sander. Gary first saw the Kündig range

Plan c pages.indd 60

of sanders at a W exhibition, at Birmingham’s NEC. The team from Parabola took full advantage of the opportunities at the show to view a wide range of woodworking machinery in action, including Kündig sanders demonstrated by Carl O’Meara of Kündig UK. Regarding the edge sander, Gary says: “We ummed and ahhed about

it: then, after a visit to Carl at his showroom in Burscough, near Preston, we felt that we should definitely get the sander – it made sense.” The edge sander provides significant production advantages. “We have machines that sand the faces of panels, but always spent a lot of time by hand sanding the

edges. It just does not make sense when there are a lot of drawerboxes and carcasses. The Uniq-S takes the donkey-work out of everything: it is efficient.” Gary talk of choosing Kündig: “It’s because of the build quality and the reputation. There are a couple of other manufacturers that do a similar machine but it wasn’t

24/07/2018 10:55

61

quite the same. For the accuracy we were looking at the sander had to be built correctly, with tiny tolerances. It had to be a rigid quality machine. “It is very convenient. We have the edge sander in the hand workshop rather than the machine workshop. It is there when you need it, right next to the work benches.” While space was not an issue, Gary adds; “It is a nice compact machine.” Gary selected various options, including a grooved infeed platen to allow the sanding off of veneers that have been over laid after edging; a second transport belt to allow sanding of the ends of narrow panels; a two speed motor

Plan c pages.indd 61

to allow finer grade abrasives to be used; a bobbin attachment allowing internal and external curves to be sanded; and a semi round table allowing the sanding of shapes using the rubber coated drive roller on the machine. The Kündig Uniq-S handles throughfeed sanding of small or large workpieces thanks to the integrated feed system, and can operate manually or with automatic feeding. With a table size of 1180mm x 325mm, the sander comes with two guide-pulleys for long workpieces. Pressure rollers hold the workpieces against the feed belt. The solid frame construction features heavy cast

iron tables. The belt width is 150200mm, and the belt length is 2000mm. The working level is approximately 830 mm on the sanding side and 900 mm on the side for veneer sanding. The net weight is 490 kg and the floor space required is 1150mm x 800mm.

Asked if he would recommend the Uniq-S edge sander, Gary replies: “Yes, definitely. It does everything we expected it to do.” He added: “Carl is perfect: you can talk to him, no problem, and he will give you good advice.” 0845 833 0565 sales@kundig.co.uk www.kundig.co.uk

62 Component technology and innovation Festool has further expanded its Domino system with the addition of detachable basic structure connectors and furniture connectors.

The perfect joint – now even more versatile These small, robust and detachable connectors allow furniture designs to be quickly and easily assembled while ensuring stability and flexibility. Four different versions ensure maximum flexibility and equally stable corner joints, centre panel joints and joints between series of holes. They can be positioned universally – both with the Domino dowel and in combination with a series of holes – for all material thicknesses from 18 to 28mm. “Our new connectors make it possible to create robust yet detachable joints that can be easily combined with Domino dowels

Everything like usual: The new basic structure connectors and furniture connectors can be used with the Domino DF 500 jointing machine: routed hole, 8mm diameter Left: Corner connector – for Domino/Domino joints: With only two Domino routed holes and one drilled hole, corner joints are produced quickly and without additional measurements

at any time. This is particularly beneficially with deconstructible furniture assemblies,” explains product manager Wolfgang Reines. “Thanks to their design, our new connectors smooth out the axial irregularities that are created when milling. We have also designed our connectors so that their large tightening distance and long bolts enable high stability. Domino connectors do not protrude after pre-assembly. This allows workpieces to be easily stacked and ensures that they remain undamaged during transport,” Wolfgang explains. It is precisely its versatility, flexibility and ease of use that make the new connectors so special. More information and a range of videos are available on the Domino microsite. www.festool.co.uk/Domino Centre panel connector – for Domino/Domino joints: Centre panel joints are produced in the same way as corner joints. The only difference: a through hole is made in the centre panel through which the connector is inserted

64 Component technology and innovation When Lamello’s Cabineo was first conceived, the idea was to create a fitting that offered significant advantages during production, transport and installation– and eliminated the possibilty of damage to surfaces, even when panels are stacked for packing.

Get a grip with Cabineo – Lamello’s one-piece fitting Cabineo, first introduced at Interzum 2017, achieves all of these objectives and seems set to become a firm favourite with flatpack manufacturers that want to speed up production, make life easier for customers and reduce returns. Cabineo is a one-piece cabinet fitting that is installed into a drilled or routed shape. No edge drilling is necessary – machining is required only on the surface of the panel – making Cabineo suitable for use with all kinds of CNC machines, including very simple three-axis and nesting machines. In comparison

with the standard cam and dowel fitting, Cabineo offers more efficient production, faster installation and a higher clamping force, so no wobbly joints. Customers don’t even need wooden locator dowels. Fitting Cabineo requires three top-drilled 15mm holes and a 5mm hole that takes a screw on the other side. All the end user has to do is turn the pre-installed screw inside the fitting into the 5mm drill hole in the corresponding workpiece using

a ball-end Allen key. A cordless drill then joins the workpieces. Cover caps are available in various colours and clip easily into place. Cabineo can be installed flat on the surface and when fitted doesn’t leave any protruding parts. The benefit is the panel can be shipped in flatpack form with the fitting already installed. 0789 1025 646 s.chatfield@lamello.com www.lamello.com

Products 65 The increasing demand for coatings that are certified and tested to recognised fire standards has ensured that Hesse Lignal developed its PU Multicoat lacquer to meet this requirement.

Hesse’s flame-retardant coatings offer EN 13501-1 and IMO certification Hesse Lignal offer a comprehensive range of fully tested and certified lacquers that meet multiple fire standards. Their ranges carry certificates from DIN 4102 B1, IMO, French M1 classification and on their Fantastic Fill Primer and Fantastic Colour ranges EN 13501-1. The DE 4259x is a two component multi-coat acrylic PU lacquer that boasts a three-day pot life. This multi-coat lacquer meets the EC-type examination certificate IMO-certification, flame-retardant coating agent for seagoing vessels, which puts it at the forefront of marine coatings. In addition this product meets the French M1 classification as well as the test certificate for flame retardancy to B1 according to DIN 4102. and mechanical resistance. It can also be pigmented to suit almost all colour tones and a wide range of gloss levels. The Fantastic Fill primer takes this a step further. It boasts the certification for EN 13501-1 and has the ability to coat MDF in one coat. The Fantastic Colour also carries the same certification and goes over the top of the primer

again with one coat or can be used directly on MDF. As to be expected from Hesse, safety does not stop with the fire testing. Their coatings are free of wood preservatives, toxic-heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers, formaldehyde, and volatile aromatic and halogenated organic compounds. Hesse Lignal “will not compromise on its customers’

health at any cost”. Hesse is using its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute this product in the UK. Customers wishing to try the various fire rated systems can call Redwood and benefit from strong technical back-up over the phone, and on site if required. 02392 233310 www.redwoodinnovations.co.uk

Kite Packaging introduces new tamper-evident security seals

Employee-owned business, Kite Packaging, has increased its protective sealing range by introducing its new, safeguarding security seals. It’s another expansive move by the company that has brought over three hundred products to market this year. The new range has three different specifications, a standard security seal, tear-off security seal, and an attached lid container seal, all of which are designed to protect and seal a range of industry products. With its average breaking strain of 21kg, the polypropylene pulltight security seal is designed for securing a variety of plastic bags, waste sacks, containers and tote boxes and offers complete tamperevidence for businesses with the additional reinforcement of it not being possible to open by hand.

However, although the tear-off security seal offers the same tamper-evident security, it’s equipped with a tear-off strip that enables it to be broken by hand. This is an ideal securing agent for sealing bags, sacks, tote box lids and roll cages and its moulded rib feature on the reverse side ensures correct entry during application. The other new seal which will prove particularly useful for a range of industries and warehouses is the attached container seal, a perfect solution for securing attached lid containers across the UK. These new additions ensure reliable protection through transit and storage, thanks to their tamperevident compositions, firms can ensure goods are not interfered with and encourage consumer trust in their delivery process. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

Sophisticated drawer systems from Ney StarBox StarBox, the flagship Eco drawer system from Ney boasts a premium soft close drawer programme with affordability in mind. The unique selling point for manufacturers is that the drawer has been designed to take 18mm board. For many smaller producers

StarBox, the flagship Eco drawer system boasts a premium soft close drawer programme

Plan c pages.indd 68

this can make production quicker and cheaper because 18mm board does not have to be routed down to 16mm to fit, saving a process. By the same token 16mm board does not have to be purchased specifically for drawers, allowing optimisation of the board with previously scrap material able to be used for drawer bases and backs.

StarBox has many different possibilities that cover all aspects of perceived value. For the contract market manufacturers tend to use just a gallery rail for their pan drawers and for the higher end a glass side panel is the choice. The current market trend is to have internal drawers with aluminium front panels in tall larder units and with StarBox, glass front and side panels can be added for the top end of the market. KuBox The newest member of the Eco Drawer range, KuBox is Ney’s slimline drawer with an impressively thin 12mm thick drawer side – maximising the full width of the drawer. The KuBox has an upgraded slide with rack and pinion synchronisation that minimises any lateral movement on the drawer to ensure there are no failures to the mechanics of the drawer. Again the unique selling point for Ney’s customers is that the

drawer has been designed, just like StarBox, to take 18mm board. The impressive design feature of KuBox is that you do not require a gallery rail to go to a higher drawer; Ney has three different drawer height options – 90mm, 128mm and 175mm – giving a very modern contemporary finish. However there is a retro-fit gallery rail if you do require a higher drawer front. Ney has seen the trend of the KuBox to work particularly well in bedrooms simply because it is a natural upgrade to a single wall metal-sided drawer and the iron grey finish works very well with the woodgrain boards that have been flooding the bedroom market. The Eco drawer range truly allows customers to be versatile with their product offering as this option can meet all aspects of price – but even more importantly, when opting for StarBox or KuBox as a soft close drawer partner, confidence in reliability, quality and longevity will quickly be realised. www.ney.co.uk

70 Products Following an extensive range review based on in-depth market research and customer feedback, PWS presents its completely re-energised 1909 collection. The product refresh includes four new signature looks, a brand-new door range, five new colours, two new beading options and a host of new accessories, including an extensive range of modern and classic handle additions.

PWS unveils a fresh approach to a timeless classic 1909 is PWS’ premium kitchen brand and is a collection of painted in-frame timber kitchens evolving from classic designs, adapted and constructed to meet the aesthetic and performance demands of today. The four new signature looks – Ovolo, Shaker, Georgian and Slab– now sit alongside the existing Half Pencil & Scalloped and Quarter Round

designs to complete the full collection. In addition to the new door styles, PWS is launching five new colours to its existing 1909 palette, taking the total to 32. Having identified new colour trends through research, Dry Rose, Cadet Blue, Storm Blue, Dust Grey and Putty, have been carefully created to equally suit traditional or

contemporary homes. “We’re delighted with our enhanced proposition for 1909 and the comprehensive new product additions following an extensive development process,” explains Richard Gates, kitchen category manager at PWS. “Although 1909 draws on historical British design, the classic market continues to evolve with

a more modern interpretation, so our focus has broadly been twofold: offering a classic collection that meets today’s consumer expectations and providing our customers with a commercial product portfolio that can help them demonstrate their design expertise,” Richard concludes. PWS is supporting its new 1909 collection with a comprehensive

72 Updates

Foundation stone for the biggest investment in Grass company’s history On 18 June 2018 the foundation stone was laid for the new Grass central warehouse in Hohenems (Vorarlberg/Austria). The leading manufacturer of moving systems for the furniture industry is erecting a hub for its European production sites costing €45m. This is the biggest investment of the Würth Group in the company’s history, a clear commitment to the location Vorarlberg as well as a prerequisite for further growth. From the end of 2019 about 150 employees will be working in Hohenems. In the presence of the owners, representatives from all production sites and prominent members from politics, the economy and media, the foundation stone for the new central warehouse was laid. Costing €45m, this is the biggest investment the company of the Würth Group has made in its 71year history. The building company Goldbeck Rhomberg will construct the central warehouse on a property measuring 43,000m2. It offers a total of 30,000 pallet positions on 22 levels. The operations are planned to begin at the end of 2019, initially with 150 employees. The factories in Hohenems will then deliver finished products which have gone through the customisation, packaging and order-picking process based on the individual customers’ requests. Third facility in Vorarlberg Grass was founded in 1974 in Höchst. Other production sites of the group are Salzburg (Austria), Reinheim (Germany) with the affiliated factory in Krumlov (Czech Republic) and Kernersville (USA). Götzis, a second facility in Vorarlberg, was added through the merger with the Mepla-Alfit Group in 2007. Now a third one is being created with the ultramodern central warehouse, which will serve all European production facilities as a hub. In 2017, Grass achieved sales of €368m with almost 2000 coworkers at 18 locations around the world. With more than 200 sales partners in 60 countries,

Plan c pages.indd 72

Grass is globally one of the leading specialists in moving systems. Grass slide and drawer systems as well as the hinge and flap systems are brand products that are fitted in the furniture of renowned manufacturers. Key strategic project “Optimising the supply chain management is a core challenge for being successful in the long term,” is how Thomas Zenker, Spokesman of the Grass management board, describes the motivation for the biggest investment in the company’s history. “Our order books are full and the demand of the market is excellent. However, there were opportunities which weren’t taken advantage of due to the strong growth in previous years. “With the central warehouse we’re resolving one of the most important bottlenecks and creating the prerequisites for profitable and sustainable development.” Grass has been part of the Würth Group since 2004 and is in a very healthy position. “Investments in logistics, especially to this extent, are always a sign of growth and development. With the function of the central warehouse, we’ll be able to significantly shorten our reaction times,” Robert Friedmann, spokesman of the board of directors of the Würth Group, says with satisfaction. He adds: “I’m happy that the company has developed in such a dynamic way.” Trial run in Feldkirch As an interim solution, the former spinning mill in Feldkirch-Gisingen was leased. An external warehouse was established there and the planned production and logistics processes were put through a trial run. With this preliminary work it was possible to test the positive effects and reduce the complexity of the start of operations in Hohenems scheduled for 2019. The processes optimised through using the central warehouse will allow the specialised production sites to concentrate on their core competencies – production and development. This will make it

easier to make use of synergies and utilise the best-practice examples developed at individual locations more effectively in the entire group. Ground-breaking ceremony with symbolic meaning Six time-capsules are placed in the foundation stone, five for the existing production sites and the sixth for the joint central warehouse. Representatives from the existing locations presented individually filled containers to the patrons: Robert Friedmann as representative of the Würth Group, Walter-Heinz Rhomberg for the building contractor, the deputy state governor Karlheinz Rüdisser and mayor Dieter Egger as well as members of the Grass management board, Thomas Zenker, Thomas Müller and André Stiller. The patrons placed the capsules into the foundation stone, which will be added to the building at a very visible place in the central warehouse. The symbolic act ended with best wishes for a smooth construction process without accidents.

Impulse for a business location “We are pleased that Grass is moving to Hohenems, the jobs associated with this and the starting signal for the trendsetting Project EMSPARK A14. This area next to the autobahn is an ideal location for the project. Thus, also the first ground-breaking ceremony of the new business area in Hohenems, which will create several hundred jobs, was held by Grass. “With it, Hohenems will make an important contribution to the economic development of Vorarlberg,” adds the mayor of Hohenems, Dieter Egger. “Economic development and social prosperity go hand in hand. This commitment to the location Vorarlberg will create 150 jobs, the basis for independent and autonomous co-existence,” says deputy governor Karlheinz Rüdisser. “It’s in the interest and a joint responsibility of employers, employees and politics to make the necessary development possible in order to maintain the quality of life in the future as well. The current project shows how this can be achieved,” concludes Karlheinz.

Always on the cutting edge Taka Srl, a specialist in the production of hot-melt PUR adhesives, has developed over the years a range of products for various applications, suitable for humid and hot environments such as kitchens, bathrooms and all areas where a high resistance to heat, humidity and steam is required. Its sister company WPR, produces profile and panel wrapping machines; together, they offer allround service. In the production of furniture made of wood, MDF, chipboard or honeycomb, an important process that completes the finishing is the edgebanding of the ennobled panels. The choice of the adhesive is based on the type of finishing (type and colour of the edge) and the shapes (straight, curved and softforming panels), but above all, on the resistance required by the finished product. Taka offers the following edgebanding glues: • 3308.5: Transparent adhesive for the edgebanding of all types of panels (straight to soft-formed) where edges of various colours are used. Since the product is completely invisible, it allows to have a thin glue line and in the presence of edges of different colours, the adhesive will reflect the colour of the edge, making the glue line disappear. • 3308.10: Adhesive of neutral colour, suitable for straight edgebanding with long open time and excellent grip. Great resistance to heat, humidity and steam tests, ideal for kitchen doors.

• 3308.20 Taka has introduced this new neutral colour product into the market. It features an excellent open time and high initial grip, particularly in the presence of edges with high thicknesses 1-2mm. It also has an excellent stability inside the machine, especially during the weekend stop. With the aim of being an active partner for its costumers, WPR/TAKA has opened the WPR/ TAKA Academy to transfer the fundamental

knowledge of the application process and the respective parameters in order to obtain always the best possible quality. The academy has an application laboratory with an edgebanding machine for tests and training purposes, and it also offers training courses for staff that can be held at the customer’s site. adhesivesolutions@btinternet.com www.profilewrappingsolutions.co.uk

A new focus on paper-based packaging solutions as an alternative to plastics With Teresa May setting out to rid the UK of avoidable plastic and David Attenborough warning us of the detrimental impact the substance is having on our oceans, people are beginning to re-evaluate the whole purpose of single-use plastic and whether there is really a need for it. As we sift our way through the many tasks and challenges society throws our way, the particularly hot topic of protective packaging derived from plastic and polyethylene is being discussed throughout a wide range of industries. Thanks to the UK’s vivacious café culture, our nation produces 30,000 tonnes of coffee cup waste each year. The disposable cups cannot be recycled within normal systems as their cardboard composition is tightly bonded with a polyethylene liner, deeming them unacceptable for recycling by paper mills. As well as this, other impacting sources and single-use products such as plastic bottles, straws and cotton buds are also producing colossal waste with an estimated 150 metric tons of plastic currently circulating our oceans. So how has this over-production of plastic happened? Originally, due to the mammoth influx in demand, businesses had to focus on packaging their products in the most cost-effective way possible whilst accommodating mass production levels. With many of them turning to plastic and polythene as low-priced solutions, the scale of non-renewable plastic waste has rocketed, therefore introducing the imminent need for reform. In order to reduce plastic waste and abide by a circular economy philosophy, highly influential global businesses and fastmoving consumer giants are now joining initiatives with the aim of eradicating single-use plastics and developing new business models. For this wholesale transformation to happen, organisations and companies nationwide need to come together under a shared commitment to act and every

Plan c pages.indd 76

party has to adhere to the change ahead. Regardless of size or status, businesses are now under a monumental pressure to perform ecologically – including the minimisation of plastic pollution. So how else can OMEs and SMEs tackle the issue of non-

biodegradable plastic waste when it comes to packing their goods? One viable solution is implementing paper-based packaging alternatives which offer a recyclable service to businesses and consumers. The circular economy trend and environmental considerations are becoming more dominant factors for consumers when buying a product, thus heavily impacting brand image. By using protective packaging manufactured from a paper-based, renewable source, companies can remove the need for singleuse plastic whilst also enforcing an environmentally-friendly work ethic amongst the manufacturing sectors and supply chain. Paperbased solutions can still provide the necessary protection for stock but with one major difference – the biodegradable properties. E-commerce giants like Amazon are leading the way

with frustration-free paper-based packaging by filling their exterior boxes with paper void fill, therefore encompassing a reusable, ecofriendly approach in the packing arena. This efficient method can be carried out using innovative paper dispensing systems such as the Speedman Box, Speedman Classic, Speedman Pro or Paper Jet Paper System which eliminate the need for plastic and polystyrene void fill. This ongoing shift from plastic packaging to paperbased alternatives is impacting a large scope of industries and influencing the nationwide pick, pack and despatch process. One company taking advantage of the ecological potential of paper-based alternatives is Kite Packaging, a leading UK packaging supplier which is continuously innovating by bringing eco-friendly products to market. Kite is the only packaging

supplier in the country to run an environmental Government Approved Compliance Scheme for Packaging Regulations otherwise known as Kite Environmental Solutions (KES). Through on-site support, a partnership approach and in-depth knowledge of the regulations, KES ensures that businesses can meet and exceed the Environment Agency’s data accuracy requirements and puts them in the best possible position to pass the compliance audits. Overall, this whole process of collaboration is particularly potent when working to achieve new environmental business models. The new models need to be accessible, so by working cohesively, organisations in society can identify and adopt the necessary new ethics and regulations that are needed and apply them in practice. Paper-based alternatives offer an environmentally-viable solution to the plastic epidemic, and therefore by collaborating with a united environmental aspiration, utilising education on the issue and implementing paperbased alternatives, we can help revolutionise our throwaway culture and cement a reformed circular economy for a sustainable future. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

AFS Biomass in partnership with RESET, Renewable Energy Solutions Environmental Technology. AFS Biomass are proud to announce the UK launch of SyngaSmart, an international patent-pending integrated solution for power and heat generation through biomass pyro-gasification in a carbon-negative and no-waste production cycle. Cutting edge plug-and-play co-generation plants manufactured in Italy to exacting standards, the SyngaSmart CHP systems are housed in 20 ft insulated and sound proofed modular shipping containers, enclosing the whole generation process, from biomass loading to power generation. SyngaSmart solid biomass combined heat and power systems are carbon negative with no waste. Emissions are limited to the engine exhaust gases which comply with all emission standards and restrictions. The “no waste” production cycle only generates energy and a small amount of biochar, a powerful natural fertilizer and water treatment additive. SyngaSmart systems are eligible for the Government RHI scheme, (Renewable Heat Incentive), which rewards businesses that adopt biomass heating systems for all the metered heat generated for 20 years. More should be done to improve window safety awareness says Mighton chairman Sadly adding emphasis to the recent call to action from Mighton chairman Mike Derham, a Canadian news report (https:// globalnews.ca/news/4208045/ richmond-toddler-fall-window/) has proven child window safety to be very much a widespread issue, with the need for increased awareness stretching far outside of the UK. “With 4000 accidents of this nature being reported in the UK alone each year, more needs to be done to intensify legislation and

educational efforts to prevent such incidents involving young children from happening. By comparison, US figures – where effective legislation is already in place - are annually almost 25% lower, with a reported 3300 children aged fvie and under being treated at ER Departments for injuries sustained by falling from an open window,” explains Mike. “With a far greater public awareness of these dangers, US legislation includes campaigns such as National Window Safety

Week, a part of the National Safety Council that took place in early April, as well as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard.” Unfortunately, despite the work of the Child Accident Prevention Trust and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), legislation here in the UK is still comparatively poor, and Mike is calling for the UK, and others, to follow the US in intensifying legislation and educational efforts to help prevent more young children from falling from windows. “ASTM standards are already used in the UK for other products, so this type of legislation is something that can be easily implemented without significant costs to anyone,” adds Mike. Additionally, the US initiative Window Safety Task Force, part of the National Safety Council, provides key information on window safety, practices and hardware that can help significantly

reduce the number of window-fall incidents and it is hardware such as Mighton’s award-winning Angel Ventlock that can easily mitigate associated dangers. Roto Frank of America, the US distributor of the Mighton window restrictor, has a representative on the Window Safety Task Force. Used by some of the world’s largest window companies, Angel Ventlock has been tested to and passes the most stringent International and European Standards. www.mightonproducts.com

Innovative automation: Homag demonstrates first autonomous cell Automated production was a hot topic at Holz-Handwerk this year and 2018 was certainly Homag’s biggest show yet. Not only did Homag demonstrate its latest machinery and software innovations but it also premiered its first autonomous workshop live at the woodworking trade show. Simon Brooks, managing director at Homag UK explains: “At Homag, we are continuously focused on developing automated solutions that increase throughput whilst reducing costs and

production times for all sizes of manufacturers. “After months of planning, we demonstrated the autonomous cell live at Holz-Handwerk to showcase the vast potential an automated cell has. It was the perfect platform to highlight the benefits to smallmedium sized companies who may not know how accessible this technology is to them. Our automated solutions, including the autonomous cell, cater for all types and sizes of manufacturers and can handle many tasks including

batch size 1 production.” High-tech edge banding with automated workpiece handling The start of the cell demonstrated edge banding with integrated workpiece handling, making the process completely automated. The Edgeteq S-500 edge banding machine offers maximum flexibility when combined with the Loopteq O-600 return conveyor. As demonstrated, the return conveyor and the edge banding machine can be interconnected through the

woodFlex cell control system. In order to ensure that the cell correctly processes workpieces, each part is assigned a barcode in advance so the system can keep track of all parts. Once the part is edged, the Loopteq O-600 return conveyor rotates the workpiece and brings it back to the start of the cell so that the other sides of the workpiece can also be edged. The Loopteq O-600 automatic return system is combined with a stacking system which

AGVs connect the two areas of the cell for fully automated production

automatically ejects or de-stacks finished workpieces. This reduces the amount of manual labour needed in-between workpieces and speeds up the production process. CNC processing with robotic automation The second part of the cell focused on CNC processing. Here, a 6-axis robot undertook the automated handling of panels for CNC processing on the Drillteq V-500 vertical processing system. The robot automatically loads the workpiece onto the CNC machine to begin the production process. By reading the barcodes, the system knows which workpieces to pick and where to place them next. Once the CNC machine has completed the drilling and dowelling process, the robot automatically de-stacks workpieces. The robot can also be programmed to de-stack workpieces within manufacturers’ desired layout.

This automated cell virtually eliminates downtime, boasts a high degree of repeat accuracy and features precise part handling. Flexible interlinking using automated guided vehicles Automated guided vehicles connected the two areas of the fully-automated cell, supplying the Drillteq V-500 with finished edged stacks from the Edgeteq S-500. This allowed the cell to operate completely independently. The use of AGVs will transform manufacturing plants into fully automated production facilities. Smart networking with ControllerMES software The ControllerMES production control system from Homag is the key to interconnected communication in the cell. It connects the individual control systems of both the Loopteq O-600 and the Edgeteq S-500, as well as

the control system for the AGVs. Simon concludes: “It is an extremely exciting time for Homag. Not only did we receive a high level of great feedback at Holz-Handwerk but the cell has also been awarded a ‘Special Mention by the Jury’ at the XIA Innovations Awards 2018. Despite not fitting into the existing award categories, Xylexpo ensured the innovative autonomous cell was still awarded a fitting special distinction. This emphasises Homag’s position as the market leader within the automation arena. “The autonomous cell has generated a lot of interest and the use of AGVs in the woodworking industry will make a fundamental difference to manufacturers wishing to automate their production processes. “With a range of great offers from the Homag finance team, automated production has never been more accessible. Whatever their size, all manufacturers are facing increasing pressure to meet more complex production demands and Homag has a personalised solution for each.” For a demonstration of any Homag machinery or for further product information, call Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

Finding a brilliant solution Manufacturers know their products better than anyone and they also have a good idea of the machinery needed to take production to the next level. With pressure from customers to reduce lead times and increase production there is often a tight time frame to source and install the new equipment required. This is a common situation which is resulting in more and more companies turning to FerWood for a solution that not only fits the brief but does so within a much shorter timeframe than might be expected. The reason for that is simple: FerWood doesn’t manufacture machines, it holds them in stock and then rebuilds the machines of leading manufacturers to an exceptional standard, bringing them right up to the specification they need for the job they want them to perform, at a fraction of the cost. Working with a wide range of leading machinery manufacturers means knowing how each brand works and what unique features might suit a particular application best. Looking for the ideal option often means modifications are needed to achieve great results. That’s when FerWood can offer a customised solution that best fits its customers needs. Sometimes it can be the simplest of changes that makes the biggest difference to a production facility but, whether

Plan c pages.indd 86

it’s a simple modification, or a completely new function that needs to be added to a machine, skilled engineers are on hand to make all necessary alterations quickly and effectively. This adaptable approach also extends to complete production lines, where FerWood’s team has the experience, as well as an impressive global machinery inventory to integrate equipment from different manufacturers into one line. The process often requires multiple units being removed, modified and installed to overcome any challenging obstacles the customer might have initially faced. FerWood’s attitude is refreshingly flexible. It’s all about their customer’s needs. It is a high quality, timely and flexible approach to used woodworking machinery that sets FerWood apart. Its wide knowledge of machinery and ability to think outside the box when faced with tricky manufacturing issues has given a reputation for being problem solvers. The combination of cost saving and a high quality rebuilding service with customisable options, within a shorter timeframe means the benefits of buying a reconditioned machine from FerWood creates a credible option when selecting machinery. 0113 2866689 www.ferwoodgroup.com @FerWoodGroupUK

Joinery company benefits from purchasing a Wood Waste Technology heater A Norfolk staircase manufacturer has purchased a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to continue to convert waste wood into free heating for the factory. Cullum & Clarke Joinery is a specialist manufacturer of staircases, windows and doors as well as all other purpose-made joinery, supplying to both trade and public since the business started in 1982. The company had previously invested in a wood waste heater from another manufacturer which developed a problem, so managing director Barry Cullum did some research on a replacement. After reading positive reviews about the UK-manufactured wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Technology, Barry contacted them for more information. Following a site survey and quotation, Barry ordered a WT5

from Wood Waste Technology. Barry explains: “We’re delighted with our new wood waste heater. Wood Waste Technology’s heaters are well made, easy to use, efficient and competitively priced, and the team at Wood Waste Technology was great to deal with. “We even managed to duct some of the heat to another area so all the employees in our 6000ft2 workshop feel the warmth. Our business really benefits from having a wood waste heater on the premises so we didn’t hesitate to buy a replacement once our old one developed a problem. “From what we’ve seen so far we think Wood Waste Technology’s products are second to none, and we’re not surprised to hear that all the wood waste heaters they’ve ever produced are still in operation today.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters,

from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk www.putzmaus.co.uk
