Comment By its very nature, business exists to define an opportunity – hopefully of the commercial variety – to help it flourish, to, in turn, invest in new ideas and, with a following wind, make a profit. In a creative manufacturing sector such as ours, opportunities tend to always go hand in hand with innovation. The me-too approach is typically a non-starter these days – there will always be someone doing the same for less, so to be motivated to discover new methods, techniques and points of difference is the way to go.

Take the three mega-businesses currently jostling to become the first outfits with a market capitalisation of a trillion dollars – Amazon, Google and the poster boys at Apple. These young tech businesses have one thing in common – they used innovation to create differences and, in less than a generation, these three are valued at more than €600b, €700b and €800b respectively.

In recent months, we have reported a lot about Industry 4.0, with many of the major machinery firms that supply the industry presenting their visions of how effectively manufacturers can operate using the latest techniques.

In this issue, SCM reports on its recent Digital Days open house, which attracted over 2500 people to Rimini to get hands-on with the Italian firm’s latest innovations. Large factories, as well as small workshops, are seeking to employ optimised, custom, integrated production lines to meet the specific requirements of each task without sacrificing the advantages of industrial production.

We also hear from Homag, whose business is undergoing a major rebranding programme. It launched its tapio system at Ligna last year, and while exhibiting at Holz-Handwerk in Nuremberg this March, Homag will be unveiling intelliDivide, a tapio software extension whereby a machine operator can select from a range of performance display options depending on data requirements, which can lead to increased production efficiencies by understanding how to reduce waste, or producing the shortest machine run times.

Elsewhere this month, I’m off to Birmingham to introduce my new ad team to the delights that await in the hallowed halls of the NEC at the kbb event. Account managers Nic Snow and Lisa Williams are looking forward to learning about our constantly-evolving industry as business moves into another era. Nic and Lisa will also be presenting Connect to colleagues at the show and over the following weeks. The Connect platform comprises a traditional printed trade directory and a new dedicated website with promoted functions and features to make finding contacts, companies, products and services straightforward.

Furniture fittings and architectural hardware specialist Häfele is introducing a lifetime guarantee across its own-brand product range.

Häfele’s own brands cover a wide array of products across the furniture fittings and design industry: The StarTec brand encompasses door furniture; the Slido brand offers a comprehensive range of sliding door hardware; and the IxConnect brand provides furniture connectors, fittings and shelf supports. The company also produces Loox – a plug-and-play LED lighting system, the MX soft-close drawer system and the FREE range of flap fittings.

All products that carry a Häfele Lifetime Guarantee have met Häfele’s high quality standards and have been tested according to the relevant industry certification, to the point that they guarantee the product will function as intended with no loss of operating quality, for the guaranteed lifetime period of that product.

The guarantee covers the expected lifetime of the product in a non-commercial environment.

Help For Heroes confirmed as the W Exhibition and Elements charity partner Help for Heroes has been announced as the official charity partner for the furniture and joinery manufacturing show, the W Exhibition, and co-located furniture components show, Elements, for a second consecutive year.

Following the success of the 2016 show, which saw the charity forge strong relationships with exhibitors and visitors from the woodworking sector, Help for Heroes will once again take part in the four-day event held from the 30th September – 3rd October 2018 at the NEC, Birmingham.

“For us, taking part in shows like the W Exhibition and Elements is about raising awareness for a worthy cause,” explains Dean Williams, central England regional manager for Help for Heroes.

“Many people still don’t know the relationship we have with the woodworking sector and how their time, skills and funding could change the lives of many ex-servicemen and women that, as a result of serving their country, have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses.

“Exhibitions like this offer us a great opportunity to educate visitors on our woodworking shops and recovery centres, whilst also helping us to engage with potential employers who could aid the future careers of our beneficiaries. They also give us a platform to find willing volunteers and companies that can help us to inspire and support our cause.”

SCM’s head of service to build on John Allenby’s fine work After 18 years at the helm of SCM Group (UK) service department, John Allenby has taken a decision to move aside to allow a new chapter to begin in SCM aftercare.

The team John Allenby built over the years accounts for over 30 engineers on the road, a team of six, office-based, to support customers remotely and to organise the time of travelling technicians, plus two administrative assistants who link daily action with IT systems to categorise, register and evaluate the jobs accomplished.

The whole process has been developed in co-operation with SCM’s Italian HQ but has a lot of John’s experience in it.

John comments: “I officially now have about 18 months left before my retirement date, and so I feel that the time is right to encourage some new blood, to continue what has already been established.

“Adam Chambers has been assistant manager for a number of years now and this move will allow Adam to expand the service

department further with some new fresh ideas. My new role will not see me disappear however, as I will be more focused on new machine installations.

“I will be following the order process all the way through, to ensure that the end user is totally satisfied with what they have purchased, which is in line with SCM Group’s policy to strive for customer total satisfaction.

This role combined with H&S and Warranty analysis should be enough to keep me busy,” states John.

The new service manager, Adam Chambers, says: ”Since 2004 I have been part of the SCM family and now very proud to be heading up the service operations for the UK subsidiary.

“John Allenby has been, for the last 18 years, instrumental to our success and along the way we

have built a fantastic team.

“Our skilled technical team are dedicated and focused on our customer base and we strive to be the best. We will continue to provide ongoing in-house training to our technical team, and to grow our apprenticeship programme.

“This is very important to us and proving its worth. All of our successful trainees have remained within our business and are at the top level of their skill set.

“My appointment will be to honour John’s success and continue to build the business and support our valued customer base. I believe we are in exciting times with new technologies and innovation to get stuck into, and with the strong support of my colleagues, I will strive to achieve our common goal to be the best.”

During the last few years Adam, on top of being a very well-

respected CNC specialist and coordinator, has developed IT support systems that allow clear and prompt reporting of service visits.

Customers benefit from the derived clear records of their equipment service history, and SCM grows its knowledge base using it also to cross-train and upskill all technicians in the team.

Together with the recent introduction of new high tech tools provided by SCM Italy, the business can now see itself at the forefront of service capabilities within the woodworking industry, ahead of the curve in a crowded competitive arena.

Advanced Machinery Services celebrates tenth anniversary The Advanced Machinery Services team celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and is happy and proud to be among the UK’s leading service providers with its industry leading-solutions and ideas.

Founded in late 2007, Advanced Machinery Services was formed by Steve Foster and Stephen McGloin who had previously been directors at Wadkin, before deciding to go it alone and set up their own specialist machinery and spare parts company.

A year the company had formed a partnership with a training business and AMS began to deliver accredited courses. The service division and spare parts department continued to grow rapidly too.

AMS has very fond memories of its first decade – one of the best ones was in 2012 when AMS decided to buy the intellectual property rights to Wadkin’s

woodworking machinery and its stock following its decline.

The majority of its staff came from the iconic home of Wadkin on Green Lane Road in Leicester. They still proudly display the Wadkin Bursgreen logo alongside their own. Stephen McGloin says: “We are very proud of our story. And the pedigree that we still carry today.”

Currently, one of the strongest markets for AMS is its tooling and spare parts division. Its customers can order online from its website or from its Bbay shop.

In addition, the service department has continued to grow with new engineers onboard and the fifth apprentice started – its sixth apprentice will join this June. AMS has also recruited a commercial trainee who will sit alongside the sales and marketing department.

The rebuild department remains steady with capacity sold out for the next six months. Steve Foster

comments: “This is an area that we do not have to work on – the machines for rebuilding just arrive!”

AMS has successfully participated in W12, W14 and W16 exhibitions, the biggest joinery and furniture manufacturing show in the UK, and it will once again participate with its biggest stand to date in Birmingham later this year.

AMS organises open house events at its showroom in Skeffington, Leicestershire twice a year. Visitors can view different types of Wadkin Bursgreen machines like planer moulders, crosscut saws, panel saws, edgebanders and more.

The bonus for attending open house events like these is that AMS presents special offers – and of course, it is a great opportunity for customers and AMS staff to meet face to face.

AMS has also introduced the new Wadkin Bursgreen Automatic and

semi-automatic crosscuts with 11 machines already sold – these can be viewed at the customer’s premises or in the Leicester showroom.

Steve McGloin says: “The reason we selected these machines and added our own specifications is that after visiting the factory we were impressed by the strong build quality of the machines, but more importantly was the service and the ongoing reliable supply.”

Profistop – the new stop on the block JJ Smith has announced the introduction into the UK and Ireland of the all-new Profistop® length stop and feeding systems, for which it will be the exclusive distributor.

The Profistop range has been designed and configured to suit JJ Smith’s specific requirements, in particular relating to the software and the latest generation userfriendly touch-screen tablet controller, which unlike other programmable stops is standard across the complete range.

The Profistop can be linked to a wide range of different machines, helping to transform manual equipment into simple-to-use, semiautomated and highly productive workstations.

MastaPlasta – changing the fabric of the furniture industry Turning challenges into opportunities, the export-driven business achieved success in 2016 and exceeded half a million in sales.

Furniture repair company MastaPlasta was recently awarded with two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise for outstanding innovation and international trade.

With half a million packs of MastaPlasta furniture band-aids sold since the business first began, the business has recently achieved 1500% increase in turnover.

Capitalising on the demand for quirky designs, including skull and crossbones and the Stars and Stripes flag, MastaPlasta has broad market appeal.

Based in North London, the company’s durable leather repair patches have also become

extremely popular internationally, conquering markets ranging from the US – where 80% of its wholesale customers are based – to military bases in Guam.

These repair patches have been adopted across a broad section of industries, including automotive, fashion and equestrian. Over the last five years, turnover has grown ten-fold with businesses and consumers revelling in the fact that they can repair their furniture for less than £10.

However, for joint owners Donna Clarke and Stephan Pavlou, the path to success didn’t always seem so straightforward.

In fact, Donna and Stephan set up the business in 2009 in the height of the financial crisis.

Following the closure of five stores and realising that it was expensive to repair furniture, especially sofas, they spotted a gap in the market for highquality make-do and mend solutions.

Donna says: “Turning a challenge into an opportunity has been a

big part of our venture. With fewer customers buying sofas in light of previous economic downturn, our industry expertise gave us the foresight to know that people still wanted to keep hold of their furniture. The only issue for them was that there wasn’t a 100% reliable way for them to patch up their furniture. And so MastaPlasta was born,” she continues.

Sticking to international opportunities One of the challenges for MastaPlasta was having to scale the business quickly to meet growing demand, so the company quickly enlisted the help of global transportation provider, FedEx Express.

Donna comments: “The huge uptake we had from our novel furniture band-aids meant that we’d be foolish not to go down the exporting route. However, entering new markets and becoming clued up on the varying customs requirements for each can be an unwieldy task. FedEx Express was on hand to share its knowledge on new and emerging exporting markets and as a result we were

never caught off guard by hefty import charges.”

Regarding the use of the FedEx Express International Priority service, Donna says: “FedEx Express has truly shrunk the world for us allowing us to expand into markets which we never thought possible.”

“Last year MastaPlasta made 400 international shipments with FedEx Express. Outside of our traditional exporting services, MastaPlasta has also taken advantage of FedEx Trade Networks. This provides them with international freight forwarding solutions, allowing them to import raw materials and ultimately create their product. It’s fantastic to have such a multi-faceted relationship with a customer and we’re looking forward to increasing market access for them,” says Jaydeep Prajapat, associate account executive at FedEx Express.

Patch up and get up MastaPlasta’s successful story to date has provided a platform to allow it to expand into new markets like Japan as well as increasing exports to Canada and India.

Daltons Wadkin helps Laing O’Rourke achieve higher skill and safety levels.

Essential training for wood machine operatives

Operating woodworking machinery can be dangerous. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states that poor supervision and inadequate training are two of the main causes of accidents in the woodworking industry.

The Daltons Wadkin Red Team delivers site-based courses across the UK for novice learners and experienced operators. It is important to remember the law, as per the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER 98), requires that all workers must receive adequate training, including refresher training.

The Red Team provides woodworking machinery training to international engineering enterprise, Laing O’Rourke’s Explore Manufacturing business at Explore Industrial Park in Steetley, Nottinghamshire, ensuring its woodworking technicians receive certificated operator training and appropriate awareness of Health and Safety issues.

for construction projects across the UK, with an in-house joinery shop used to insert moulds into products to leave space for window installations. The workshop uses a range of classical type woodworking machinery including a combination planer thicknesser, sliding table panel saw, radial arm crosscut, bandsaw and disc sander.

“We are now one of the largest training organisations in the UK specialising in woodworking machinery,” comments Daltons Wadkin director Alex Dalton.

“Each of our trainers is a timeserved machinist, with decades of experience in the industry.

“Coupled with teaching and assessment qualifications, they are able to effectively deliver relevant ‘hands on’ training for machine operators whether novice or experienced.”

Daltons Wadkin has a policy of continual improvement in all its operations, not least operator training. Working with PIABC, an HSE-recognised professional awarding body, the company has

been certified as an approved quality assured centre for woodworking machine operator training.

Often training is carried out at customers’ premises using their own machines. When production demands can’t allow machines to be down for training purposes, Daltons Wadkin offers its own dedicated in-house facility. The purpose-built workshop comprises over a dozen machine types from

bandsaws, sawbenches and planers to automatic crosscuts, moulders and edgebanders.

Are intellectual property rights of use to those in the furniture and joinery business?

The pharmaceutical industry famously relies on patent protection, but is there also a place for intellectual property in the furniture and joinery trade? Sarah Phillips of Abel & Imray, a firm of UK and European patent attorneys, explains more on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) in this series of articles.

F

urniture design and production generates intellectual property in many different forms: the visual appeal of individual products (for example tables, chairs, cabinets and 2D patterns/surface decoration) is protectable by unregistered and registered designs; the look of your websites, brochures and new software are protectable by copyright; and the technical innovations (for example new fixtures and fittings, or methods of assembly) required to make items function are protectable by patents, or may be retained as secret knowhow.

Aside from protection relating to products and methods of manufacture, trademarks allow you to protect and assert your brands.

Know-how, when recognised as such and kept confidential in the form of trade secrets, can be a powerful way of retaining valuable information inside your company for an indefinite period of time.

On the other hand, should the information be leaked, it becomes public knowledge, and the options for protecting your intellectual property are greatly reduced. Know-how arises organically, and can be lost, for example as personnel move on, taking with them their knowledge and expertise.

Another drawback is that know-how provides no protection against independent generation of the same ideas by a third party. Know-how can be captured and defined, and if commercially important, can be actively protected through registered rights, or managed through internal confidentiality procedures.

Patents Patents on the other hand, provide a 20-year monopoly for exploitation of your new technical innovations, in exchange for disclosing to the public what you have devised. The right is exclusive – you can prevent others from working

your invention but will still need to check for existing rights to be ‘free to operate’ in the field yourself. At the end of the patent term, protection expires and the public may freely use your invention.

Patents therefore give you the certainty of exclusive use of your invention for a limited period of time, and during that time, protect against independent generation of the same idea by a third party. In addition, patents provide a tangible business asset than can be attractive to investors, and can be used to generate extra revenue, whether through licensing or as a result of having exclusivity over the innovation. Of course, having a patent also provides marketing value, and serves as a deterrent to potential competitors.

Copyright Copyright arises automatically through the creation of a work, and protects the expression of your ideas, rather than the ideas themselves.

It arises in original 2D artistic works such as drawings, patterns and other graphic works, and photographs.

It also arises in literary works such as computer programs. Importantly for the furniture trade, there is also provision for works of artistic craftsmanship.

Since 2016, copyright bans replicas of such pieces, thus protecting original, high quality works like the Eames DSW chair and the E1027 side table. Copyright outlasts other forms of protection, such as design right, which might subsist in such designs, lasting for a considerable period of 70 years after the death

of the author, or 50 years from the making of any computer-generated work.

In order to assert copyright, it is necessary to prove actual copying; there is no protection for independent creation of the same work.

Designs Registered designs protect the appearance of your product, and aside from the product itself, cover things such as packaging, get-up, graphics, surface decoration and parts for assembly into a complex product.

To qualify for protection, designs must be new and have individual character – giving a different overall impression to previously disclosed designs. Registered designs last up to 25 years from registration, providing a monopoly right for use of the design.

Registered design right provides many of the same benefits as patents, but can’t protect the function of an article, just its 2D or 3D appearance. Unregistered design right can arise automatically under certain conditions, but lasts for a shorter duration, and doesn’t provide a monopoly right – so copying must be proved in order to establish infringement.

Trademarks Registered trademarks protect your brand, enabling your customers to identify you and to differentiate your products from those of others.

They usually take the form of a word, slogan or logo, but in certain circumstances can also cover shapes, colours and sounds. Trademarks are registered for particular goods or services; the more narrow the category, the easier they are to obtain.

As long as they don’t conflict with other existing rights, they are straightforward to register in the UK. Investing in IP can pay dividends in the long-term and we’ll be looking into how IP can be valuable to businesses in the furniture trade in the next article.

Over 2500 visitors, including customers and distributors from five continents, were welcomed at the event which took place from January 25-27th at the SCM Rimini headquarters. It was the first such event to be dedicated to the new woodworking industry trends in the digital age – visitors were most curious to see SCM’s Digital Hub and all the latest developments in production technology.

Industry 4.0 is now officially up and running

Thousands of visitors at Digital Days, SCM’s digital and smart open house Industry professionals arrived at the SCM Headquarters in Rimini from all over Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America.

From January 25-27th more than ,500 visitors attended the SCM Digital Days, the Italian giant’s 2018 open house. Record numbers that confirm once again the Group’s world leadership position among providers of secondary woodworking solutions.

The event focused on new production technologies that are based on digital developments and Industry 4.0 concepts, which companies in our industry have been adopting in recent years.

Most popular with visitors were; the SCM Technology Centre, where more than 50 operating solutions were on display, and the Digital Hub, the event’s true and proper command centre, offering live demonstration of the latest developments in digital, smart, connected and integrated production processes.

Hundreds of industry professionals flocked to the Hub to experience for themselves the immersive augmented reality wearing the SCM-designed smart glasses, which allows

company service technicians to offer remote and interactive assistance to customers.

A thousand visitors attended demonstrations of SCM software applications (in Italian, English and German). And a preview of an IoT (Internet of Things) network was a major success during this three-day event among representatives of companies that seek to adopt the Factory 4.0 principles.

Work simple. Work digital The ‘Work Simple. Work Digital’ slogan was the event’s catchphrase, its underlying concept and the common thread in the entire display of a series of technological and digital innovations, which had been developed in order to make daily work of industry professionals simpler and easier, all based on a high level of expertise and know-how.

Indeed, the vision that has inspired and driven SCM has always been focused on tying technical development to the practical needs of its end users through a systemic study and intent listening to their real situations and needs. And today, large factories as well as small workshops

seek to employ optimised custom integrated production lines, to meet the individual requirements of each task without sacrificing the advantages of industrial production.

All these concepts make up the driving force behind SCM’s technological innovations, its development of digital instruments which make every production phase ever more customisable.

The Maestro Digital Systems are an SCM project that is a prime example of this intent. It embraces all the latest woodworking tools and digital developments.

“The Digital Days were an opportunity to experience live and first-hand the true benefits offered by the Maestro Digital Systems,” says Luigi De Vito, SCM Wood Division and Group sales and marketing director.

In the Digital Hub, the stand set up at the centre of the SCM Technology Centre, visitors could attend live demonstrations of the new Maestro Digital Systems platform and instruments: Eye-M, the Maestro eye on the world, is the next-generation multifunction and multi-touch operator panel, with a 21.5in screen, which introduces the mobile-device feel and approach to the industrial production environment; Maestro Smartech, the innovative remote assistance and maintenance system which employs augmented reality glasses so the user can have an SCM technician at their side while experimenting with the future wearable technology; Maestro Suite, the powerful software collection with applications for any type of machining and production processes; Maestro Xplore, a simulation system for integrated cells and lines based on the use of the Oculus 3D virtual reality viewer, a breakthrough in the quest to fully know every detail so as to be able to optimise a production programme; Maestro Datalink, the highly innovative IoT (Internet of Things) tools platform which enables the collection of machine data for later analysis.

These systems are guided by the Smart Factory concept, aiming to monitor and improve production processes in order to provide a reliable predictive maintenance, which predicts when extraordinary maintenance is required and thus minimises production idle times.

Latest innovations at The SCM Arena The digital evolution of production systems requires new skills and the ability to follow day by day the ever-evolving industrial culture.

One has to be prepared, in short, to face the new frontiers. Plenty of industrial insights were offered during the packed programme of meetings at the SCM Arena during the Digital

Days – Tech Talks that focused on trends, strategies and success stories and headed by SCM experts and special guests from leading companies.

Among these, the IFT Rosenheim Institute, regarded as one of the highest technical and scientific authorities on the subject of windows, doors and façades, which led discussions centred on the Smart Home and on the future smartphone-controlled windows; Lignum Consulting, a consulting firm at the forefront of the wood and furniture industries, which described the new Industry 4.0 and the Connected Factory technological frontiers; representing SCM, Christian Terfruechte explained production methods and technology in the digital age, whereas Albin Siegert described the new challenges faced by machine producers of taller and taller wood high-rise buildings.

The most advanced machinery for customised and integrated production On display at the SCM Technology Center were new solutions for every type of industrial production processes – from furniture and boat building to windows and doors and to

wood construction – and the most reliable woodworking machinery to offer them.

A fit companion for all the various types of production processes, with their specific requirements, is the powerful Maestro Suite, a complete software collection shown at the Digital Days in its latest version with its hugely improved performance, open systems that allow all types of connection and full control over machine operations, while making operators’ work easy and intuitive. Examples include the new Optimiser for beam saws, which cuts calculation times by 80% and machining waste by 40-50%. Highly successful was also the Maestro Watch supervising system which operates independently lines of integrated cells.

SCM Engineering On display at an exclusive stand during the Digital Days were SCM systems of cells, equipment and production lines for the flexible production industry.

They were shown here with the innovative 3D virtual reality exploration system, Maestro Xplore. Practically, all customers who took part in the event at the SCM Rimini Headquarters could see System 1, a high-productivity integrated line for manufacturing windows and door, processing up to seven workpieces a minute.

On this front, SCM, known for its commitment to research and development of advanced solutions, has been selected as partner by a high-tech highly demanding market in such a country as Sweden.

Machining and drilling centres Attracting great interest during the event was the all-new SCM drilling-milling solution: the new Morbidelli M220 machining centre with a dual drilling head for simultaneous drilling of several panels, offering a considerable reduction in cycle times.

Another major attraction was ‘Five Ways to Make a Cabinet’, the best of the Morbidelli line in a live demonstration, covering the various

Among the models shown were those based on the All-in-One technology, such as the new Morbidelli P200 machining centre, standing out for its innovative edgebanding unit, which processes panels up to 800mm thick, and for its exclusive HE-POD suction cups, which allow the use of larger worktables thanks to alternate lifting of panels.

Solid-wood machining centres and technology On display were also high-tech SCM solutions for the finest machining of noble solid wood, with a multitude of applications for the production of windows and doors, stairs, chairs, design objects and solidwood furniture components.

Another attention grabber was the Balestrini line, including the Balestrini Power, a collection of highly precise, productive and flexible fiveaxis machining centres, equipped to meet the increasingly more demanding and diverse requirements of the woodworking industry, and the Balestrini PICO OM, the CNC tenoning, mortising, end-milling and drilling machine.

Software applications play an important role also in this machine, with the Smart Pro Suite, a fast, intuitive and flexible system that allows operators to programme and manage processes also remotely.

Other machines on display included: the Accord 25 FX machining centre, for processing linear and arched window frames, with the automated MATIC worktable managed by SCM CNC Maestro software suite; the flexible Accord WD machining cell for processing up to 16 window components without requiring the presence of operators; the Accord 40 FXM machining centre with the five-axis PRISMA spindle, optimal for both heavy-duty milling and high rotation speed profiling.

Visitors were also struck by the high productivity – some 30 windows per shift – of the solid combination of the Superset NT automated moulding machine and the Windor NT1 angular machining centre, which proves how the combination of the new Mobile PC electronic controller and traditional manufacturing processes can provide quality, precision, simplicity and great reliability.

Edgebanding Also on view at the Digital Days were the latest expressions of SCM’s vision for the modern edgebanding: machines that are fast, errorfree and meet the highest quality standards.

Specifically, the new 21.5in multi-touch machine controller offering a 3D preview of the processed panel, the new Generation “E” spindles designed to provide a solid balance between light machining and the new edge hardness standards; and the new AirFusion device, which helps the hot-air/zero glue line application to increase productivity by +10% and to cut ignition and start-up times by 50%. Great interest was raised by the brand new Stefani KD edgebander, an excellent solution for both small carpentry shops and industrial giants that seek machines for continuous machining of numerous, also diverse, panels. Representatives of small carpentry shops could experience and feel first-hand the potential of Olimpic K 360 HP, a CNC edgebander with an automated set-up for machining type change. The entire Olimpic range was on display at the SCM event with its new upgraded models.

Sawing High quality and high processing speed characterised the automated Gabbiani G2 115 single-blade beam saw, with the new Maestro Cut software controller that optimises storage management and material handling.

Greeted with enthusiasm was the Gabbiani G2 which, when integrated with the Flexstore EL storage system, is a peerless precision champ thanks its prismatic slide guides. Also on display was the new Hi-Tronic carriage, which allows the user to reach high speeds for increased productivity.

Sanding Among the numerous DMC woodworking models, SCM chose to put on display various configurations for every type of processing and type of required finishing: the compact and versatile DMC Eurosystem sander, ideal for producers of hollow-core doors and MDF veneered kitchen cabinet doors; the DMC System T4 for the furniture industry where intensive operation capacity and excellent finishing are required; the DMC System T5 sander, a complete solution for performing creative finishing effects and for personalising products, based on the use of industry-exclusive technology for creating such effects as gouged, saw-cut and structured; finally, the DMC System T4 brushing machine, equipped with the Finesand orbital pad, the ideal solution for superfinishing crossed-grained wooden parts and composite materials.

Assembly Among its assembly machines, SCM chose to show the Action P, the electromechanical machine, based on manual loading and unloading, for quick and precise furniture assembly (also with 45° clamping), using brushless motors. The integrated rack and

pinion system allows efficient squaring of the assembled product. This solution is designed for small carpentry shops producing up to 60 furniture items per day.

Woodworking machines For the modern carpenter SCM offers a range of advanced machines, such as the new Minimax SI X circular saw with a tilting blade (+/-46°) and with a programmable and motor-driven movement.

Noteworthy were the latest Minimax edgebanders: The Minimax ME 28T, the most moderately-priced edgebander on the market to come with a rectifier, a device considered standard only in higher-end machines; Minimax ME 40, which can house all the various finishing tools in order to achieve the highest rated productivity among machines for the sector of small carpentry shops.

On view at the renovated Scm Technology Center was also the VF 250 dust extractor, part of the new VF range of compact and slim extractors that may be placed at any kind of workplace. A large space was dedicated to the classic Invincibile line of machines, the products of decades-long experience, technological research and Italian expertise.

Woodworking machining centres / squaring machines and tenoners Using its innovative multimedia system, SCM demonstrated a virtual version of the Group’s machines and technology: from Oikos and Area machining centres to the Celaschi squaringtenoning machines. Noteworthy were also the Superfici machines, especially the advanced solutions for painting panels, furniture products and windows and doors.

From 21st-24th March 2018, around 110,000 joiners, woodworkers, cabinetmakers and other trade professionals will make their way to Nuremberg to learn about the latest developments and trends in woodworking and wood processing.

Holz-Handwerk on track for success For the 19th time, HolzHandwerk will open its doors as one of Europe’s leading fairs for the woodworking industry.

The interest from companies supplying this sector is once again so great that the seven exhibition halls were already booked six months in advance.

Joiners, furniture manufacturers, carpenters and cabinetmakers and the like will be looking to appreciate the top-class range of products and relevant information as well as appreciating the hands-on nature of the event.

The products on display at Holz-Handwerk include woodworking machinery, power and pneumatic tools, fixing systems, hardware, construction elements and fitted systems, timber, engineered wood and software. The trade fair covers all products and technologies relevant to the everyday work of wood processing companies.

Following the measures taken at the previous event to counter the huge traffic flows heading to the combined Fensterbau Frontale and Holz-Handwerk trade shows, the organisers are sticking to the 10am start. Research has shown that this allows exhibitors and visitors to better avoid the morning rush hour traffic.

With a new entry system NürnbergMesse has also introduced mobile ticketing for visitors, which makes admission to the exhibition grounds more convenient. In addition, special offer fares and timetable extensions at peak times provide the option of using public transport.

Homag set to make historic announcement at Holz-Handwerk Holz-Handwerk 2018 is set to be Homag’s biggest year yet at the German woodworking trade show. Visitors to the Nuremberg trade fair during 21st-24th March 2018 will see Homag make history in hall 10 as it unveils a new brand identity and product structure.

On top of this, visitors can also expect to see Homag showcase its latest machinery and software innovations for 2018. This includes demonstrations of its tapio-ready machines, new digital products, tailor-made software and services.

Simon Brooks, managing director of Homag UK explains: “As well as a new corporate identity, visitors will be the first to see Homag’s latest innovations complete with new consistent product names and a bright, fresh look.

“The new product names have been designed to create a clearer structure for customers, with each machine name now clearly stating its function. The first autonomous workshop live at Holz-Handwerk 2018 Homag will be demonstrating the first fullyautonomous workshop live at the trade fair.

Consisting of two automated cells, the set-up showcases Homag’s innovative new options for efficient production.

The first cell demonstrates high-tech edging with integrated workpiece handling. The EDGETEQ S-500 edge banding machine offers maximum flexibility when combined with the LOOPTEQ O-600 return conveyor. The return conveyor and the edge banding machine are interconnected thanks to the woodFlex cell control system. This allows for the automatic return of edged product, reducing the need for manual handling whilst speeding up production.

The second drilling cell features a six-axis robot undertaking the automated handling of panels for CNC processing on the DRILLTEQ V-500 vertical processing system. This automated cell virtually eliminates downtime,

boasts a high degree of repeat accuracy and features precise part handling.

Small, autonomous driverless transport vehicles (DTVs) connect the two fully-automated cells and supply the drilling cell with finished stacks from the edging cell. The ControllerMES production control system from Homag is the key to interconnected communication in the cell.

It connects the individual control systems of both the automated edge cell and the CNC robot cell, as well the control system for the DTVs. tapio’s latest development – intelliDivide – Software as a Service (SaaS) Another first for Homag at Holz-Handwerk will be the unveiling of intelliDivide, a tapio software extension. Since tapio’s launch at Ligna 2017, Homag has been working with experts on new features and apps which allow the user to get even more out of the system.

The first result, intelliDivide, will be demonstrated live at Holz-Handwerk. The system provides operators of Homag panel dividing saws with significantly higher computing capacity and offers several variants

of optimisation results in a short space of time. This means that with intelliDivide, the operator is able to choose from a range of performance display options depending on data requirements. This can lead to increasing production efficiencies by understanding how to reduce waste or the produce the shortest machine run time.

New high-tech solutions for manufacturers Manufacturers within the woodworking industry are increasingly under pressure to meet bespoke customer orders. This includes both increasing the variety of materials they are able to process as well as the individuality of product designs.

As the woodworking industry continues to evolve, automated and digital solutions are progressively coming into focus to meet increasing production demands. As a global leader in the woodworking industry, Homag will be demonstrating its latest innovative technology for 2018 at the show.

Storage and panel dividing technology – New saw with lifting table: A new model will be added to Series 2. Starting from Holz-Handwerk, a saw with lifting table feed will exist alongside the single saw. This allows the saw to be loaded automatically, which is not only ergonomic but

enables even greater performance – The new CADmatic 5 saw control system: From the show onwards, the SAWTEQ B-130 and Series 2 will feature the modern CADmatic 5 saw control system. Its special feature is the assistance display, which thinks in terms of the machine operator. For even more ease of use, it will always show the next step until it has been completed.

– Suction traverse in X geometry: Even the smallest of the Homag storage systems now provide maximum flexibility when transporting various materials. The STORETEQ S-200 storage system is now combined with the ST 71 suction traverse in X geometry for greater production flexibility.

Edge technology – Edge processing with flexibility³: This year, the edge experts at Homag are placing emphasis on three-in-one options. The new three-profile technology provides fast, automatic and repeat-accuracy whilst switching between three profiles and a 20° chamfer. Anyone wishing to change between edge-gluing processes (PU, EVA, or airTec invisible-joint technology) in short intervals of time can now operate all three edgegluing processes on one machine.

– Entry-level maximum edge quality: The

EDGETEQ S-200 is the ideal all-rounder. The combination of joint trimming unit, twin-motor snipping unit, trimming unit and three finishing units is impressive. On top of this, it is available for the first time with automated units.

Surface technology – Automated spray painting with robots: As a joint venture with its partner MAKOR, Homag will be demonstrating the spray robot for the first time in Nuremberg. This system can be set to apply different amounts of varnish to the edge and the surface of the workpiece. In addition, visitors can expect to see a spraying machine from the SPRAYTEQ series. Both systems feature fully automatic loading and unloading station.

– Sanding has now become even more economical: You can now get more technology whilst on a smaller budget with the entry-level SANDTEQ W-100 sanding machines . The operator can now choose from five different equipment packages which include the current additional selectable features as standard.

Replacing three manually fed and stacked high-speed edgebanding machines, the line further increases the overall quality of Decorative Panels products while also greatly adding to the efficiency of the factory.

Panels are automatically fed into the machine, then sized and edgebanded all round through linked first- and second-pass machines, grooved if required, cleaned and then automatically stacked at speeds of up to 32 parts per minute. As a result, Decorative Panels’ edgebanding capacity is significantly increased while manual intervention is eliminated.

The main aim of this investment was to introduce the very best edgebanded panels technology has to offer. The line is equipped with three different glueline technologies therefore allowing the company to offer good/better/best categories at very affordable price points: EVA glue EVA is the most common glue available and allows us to provide a suitable glueline for price sensitive product.

2x PUR glue The use of PUR allows for absolute minimal visibility of a glueline. The company has equipped the line to distribute PUR glue in two colours, either natural or white subject to

“As an adhesive specialist, our focus is on the processes of tomorrow,” explains Wolfgang Hormuth, industrial adhesive business manager for Kleiberit, from the company’s ZOW stand.

“We use exhibitions like ZOW to talk to our customers about their specific needs and processes. We believe this to be our biggest strength. We don’t pigeon-hole our customers.

Instead, we focus our attention on the optimum process for your manufacturing line. We want to know about your products, the machinery used, where the company is situated and the procedures that are already in place.

“Important in their own right, each answer offers us an insight into your business and allows us to find a solution that fits. And, if this means modifying a glue or adjusting the formula in any way, then this is what we do.”

Kleiberit’s ZOW stand reflected this approach, with much evidence of extended product lines and customised solutions. It also highlighted market trends and key influences in furniture manufacturing, like the growing demand for flat lamination and the use of gloss foils and sheets.

Drawing attention to Kleiberit 709.3 (for high gloss application), and 711.9 (for HPL or materials with uneven surfaces requiring immediate strength), Wolfgang explains: “We have a series of modifications to fit the different processes, substrates and machines our customers are using when working with high gloss foils and sheets.

“Another area of interest in this field has been the bonding of LVT, which is the gluing of PVC vinyl flooring onto various substrates like WC polymer composite or mineraloid materials. You need to be able to guarantee a very good tack and offer an extreme resistance to plasticides.

“Found in most PVC materials, a glue that is not optimised to cope with plasticides can affect the durability and longevity of your product.”

“It’s this understanding of their products and the range of materials being used in the market that set Kleiberit apart.

Different material characters mean a greater need for different bonding solutions.

ZOW presented an opportunity to showcase Kleiberit’s comprehensive range of interior and exterior wrapping solutions. The latest developments within the 702 family have been designed to fit individual processes and a full range of variations in production.

Whilst interior wrapping focuses heavily on the aesthetics, with zero glue line and no visible openings at the top of every manufacturer’s wish list, the exterior range emphasises the rigorous testing that’s gone into ensure bonding durability and longevity in the most hostile of weather conditions. Tested in accordance with German RAL standards, samples are subjected to 70°C temperatures and 98% humidity for six weeks.

Wolfgang explains: “These conditions accelerate the ageing process and test the formula’s strength. Six weeks under these conditions equates to a minimum of 10 years

of use, which gives us every confidence in our products.”

Kleiberit has also extended its PUR edging grades thanks to the company’s joint venture with leading machinery producer, SCM. “We regularly work with the biggest machinery producers in the industry and exchange ideas to create new machines and glues that push the boundaries of furniture design,” says Wolfgang.

“Most recently, we worked with SCM to create a glue that could bond edging material very quickly, whilst keeping its unique J-shape. By working together, we developed a new grade within the 707 family which helped SCM go on to win a conveted innovation prize at Xylexpo.”

Forward thinking and an innovative approach to the role of adhesives in the manufacturing sector lay behind the development of Kleiberit’s Micro Emission (ME) products, also on show at ZOW. Available throughout its edging, wrapping and flat laminate ranges, the company’s advancements in Micro Emission technology has been seen as a huge step forward in the development of glues with lower levels of harmful monomers.

“The industry has been keen to reduce the level of chemicals being used on its production lines for a number of years, but until now, lessening the chemicals found in glue has been impossible,” says Wolfgang.

Continual investment and research into this area, resulted in the development of the ME range, which provides a reduction in the

Isocyanate Monomers that are found in normal PUR glues, lessening the risk of chemical exposure without reducing performance.

Wolfgang adds: “We have found a solution that has the same level of durability and performance as standard PUR glues but with the added advantage of improving health and safety in the workplace. The industry’s response to this innovation has been strong and we’re continuing to see it grow in popularity.”

It fits into every handbag or trouser pocket. The device measures the desired shade and transmits the data via Bluetooth to your Apple or Android smartphone.

The app then searches through the Hesse database with currently around 5,000 colour tones and the best match of colour tone is displayed on your smartphone with the Hesse product number. The app also provides a timeline and the option of setting up a file structure.

This handy device provoked great enthusiasm even before its market launch. Product Manager Ralf Untiedt had presented the device to some customers during surveys and became convinced of it jointly with those customers: this device significantly simplifies the detection of colour card tones and is ideal for every craftsman and interior designer. The customer’s desired colours can even be named in the consultation directly with colour tone designation and product number. So the decision to include this innovative instrument in the Hesse Lignal product range was not difficult to reach.

Dull matt and hard as diamond

The customers were certainly astonished: “I’ve never seen such a hard spray coating...” was one of the comments as our DIAMATT Hydro-UV lacquer was shown for the first time.

EThe Hesse Lignal Hydro lacquer development team has achieved a major coup: “We won’t shine with this product!” grinned Wolfgang Randelhoff, head of the aqueous lacquer laboratory, as he gave his view on this new lacquer; and he wasn’t just referring to the dull matt gloss level.

“It’s not possible to make DIAMATT shine.

That is to say, if you try to use your fingernail to create glossy streaks you just won’t have any success. Its superb raw materials and cross-linking by means of UV rays result in the best performance characteristics, which are simply unrivalled in the furniture industry.”

The product is intended for use as a dull matt finish on coloured substrates and as a matt lacquer on primed woods.

The product is also frequently requested with natural wood effect lacquers to provide primed oak and walnut not only their dull matt top coat, but also their often required durability. DIAMATT is also a paragon in terms of chemical resistance, because it meets DIN 68861 resistance class 1A and is therefore an exceptional product among the spray coatings.

DIAMATT is the proof that elegance and durability do not have to be mutually exclusive. Application using a sprayer means that wood and colour lacquer surfaces obtain an even matt coating in gloss level 5. Application is possible in both the airless and air-mix processes.

For many years now it has been hard to overlook furniture and fitments in the metallic look and there is currently no sign of a decline in its popularity. Copper, brass, chrome and other metallic tones make for elegant eye catchers. The metallic trend is ubiquitous.

Hesse has noted this trend and created a metallic selector with over a hundred colour tones in classic metallic hues, but also in unusual shades. These colour tones are generally coated onto membranes. This has the advantage that the front of the membrane shows the original gloss of the coating, whereas the rear shows the shine of a high gloss or reverse glass coating.

Hesse CREATIVE-METALLIC is formulated as a 2-component, polyurethane lacquer material, which can be used on wood, glass and plastics depending on the type of hardener. Top coating is possible using most polyurethane finishing and brilliant lacquers. Hesse CREATIVE-METALLIC is also offered as a mixing system. Some 112 colour tones can be mixed using five base lacquers and ten pigments.

3D rolling – coating profiled parts by roller application.

Is that possible?

Yes, it is possible! A new kind of rolling procedure combined with Hesse products makes it possible.

The roller equipment is a double roller that can easily be integrated into existing systems.

Modern milling technology enables threedimensional preparation of workpieces with unusual designs, which would previously have been impossible or associated with additional cost. A very effective process thanks to CNC. Roller application of lacquers is an equally effective method for forming surfaces.

Virtually waste-free and fast and therefore ideal for industrial production processes.

Although the options for coating profiled parts by roller application were unfortunately very limited. Would it not be great to push these boundaries and be able to coat 3D parts just as effectively?

In the meantime many customers have gained practical experience using the Hesse-Lignal technology introduced at the Innovation Days 2017 on their special parts, be that doors, furniture fronts or special components, and confirm that the promise made can also be realised in practice.

What exactly is possible? The technology is in principle also suitable for coating systems that were also previously applied by roller. UV and aqueous lacquers are foremost amongst these.

The system speed can be up to 20 m/min.

The dimension of milled parts that can be coated is up to 17 mm in depth and a width of 8 mm. The maximum profile angle is currently around 45°.

Hesse Innovation Days 2017 Innovation Days 2017 was a complete success. Surface specialist Hesse succeeded once again in significantly improving the results from previous events in relation to offering, quality and visitor response.

Our factory gates were opened to almost 1000 guests from 27 countries on 14th and 15th September 2017.

A large part of the conception plan for the Innovation Days was retained. Direct observation of the lacquering process rather than fully lacquered sample panels. Only interaction with the correct processes enables new products to become value-creating solutions for practical use. One particular emphasis of the product presentations was therefore on the topic of optimal processes.

Processes that save material, save working time, increase processing speed or even enable totally new product properties.

The spectrum of those product innovations that were demonstrated was adapted to the visitor groups present. This meant there was something for everyone; from carpenters, joiners and large interior decorating companies to major industrial processors.

The latest surface systems could be experienced in a real environment in the Hesse Innovation Area. In addition to an appropriate demonstration of Hesse surface systems, guests were able to optimise their lacquering skills at a virtual lacquering simulator.

Specific subjects were covered in more detail on large touch panels, e.g. reduction in VOCs, current plant planning and much more besides. Hesse attached great importance to the networking aspect at the Innovation Days. That is how we managed to attract 20 co-exhibitors from the lacquer-related sector. These presented their products on almost 600 m2 in an Innovation Center they erected themselves.

Alongside the practical demonstrations there were also lectures by internationally renowned specialists from our industry.

For instance Dr. Kalthegener spoke on colour design as a quality factor, or Ms Nina Defounga on innovations. Dr. Sebastian Dantz from mpa Stuttgart on questions regarding fire protection and Mr Sebastian BĂźscher on modern trends in interior design.

The crowning conclusion to the first day of the Hesse Innovation Days 2017 was a large festive gathering on the Thursday evening. Around 600 participants were able to review the first day, build and extend networks and exchange views with colleagues in a convivial atmosphere.

Customers, industrial partners and Hesse all agreed that the Hesse Innovation Days were a huge success and look forward to their continuation.

A dream of 1001 nights ... ... in fact – thus began the company Hesse business in the Gulf region. 15 years ago we started our activities in Dubai with tentative individual contacts. A region in change that should become a hotspot.

With Beate Hesse as a tireless booster we won first customers and with great pride we were able to send the first see container with paint to Dubai quite exactly 15 years ago. Going into the desert - not just the paint – also our service technicians had to adapt to climate and market. Instead of drying conditions in the temperate European climate, our coatings had to work at up to 50°C - a challenge which made us investing in an air-conditioned spray and drying cabin. From then on, not only the teams in Dubai were sweating – also the development experts from the laboratory tested and engineered in Hamm under extreme conditions.

Even the global crisis in 2009/2010 and the depression in Dubai did not hurt us -on the contrary: In 2009 we opened in Dubai our largest external warehouse worldwide - a central warehouse with sales unit, which was built up to supply the Emirates and the entire Arabian region.

Countless fair presentations and a welltrained team of field staff, laboratory and back-office have completed the successful story in recent years. Hesse Coatings is a benchmark in interior construction and we are very proud of that.

Thanks to the whole team - and it all started with the dream of 1001 nights...!

Gallery Direct’s growing business with increasing product lines is putting greater demand on its storage and handling system. Working with Gallery Direct’s handling consultant, Locators, Combilift’s Aisle Master forklifts helped deliver the goods.

A good home for Aisle Masters at Gallery Direct Gallery Direct was established in 1973 as a small family business and is now a leading Britishbased designer, manufacturer and worldwide distributor of home décor, furniture and accessories.

It has experienced a period of exceptional growth in recent years and has extended its warehouse in Sittingbourne to cope with ongoing global demand.

The 130,000ft2 facility houses over 1600 product lines which range from pallets of vases to king-sized beds, all of which need to be offloaded, stored and reloaded for despatch with the ultimate efficiency. Five Aisle Master articulated forklifts look after the majority of the handling and storage procedures, and work round the clock from Monday to Friday to keep pace with Gallery Direct’s tight schedule.

“We got our first three Aisle Masters a couple of years ago and were impressed with their reliability and versatile indoor and outdoor capabilities compared with reach trucks which struggle outside, so it made sense to go with the same brand when we were looking at enlarging the site,” says warehouse

manager Richard Swann. “The trucks are really manoeuvrable and nifty, the drivers love them and their narrow aisle ability has enabled us to achieve maximum storage density.”

Gallery Direct’s materials handling consultant, Locators, and the manufacturer of the Aisle Master brand, Combilift, worked together to configure the racking which comprises a mix of 2057mm wide aisles for standard UK pallets and 2650mm where oversized products are handled. This enabled 8000 pallet spaces to be accommodated in the extension, making a total of 11000 in all. Richard points out that this is at least 25% more than would have been possible when using less manoeuvrable forklifts.

The two new Aisle Masters, delivered in the autumn of 2016 to coincide with the opening of the new facility, are heavy duty 20SWE models with large 930 amp batteries and are on five year contract hire with Locators. The two tonne capacity is more than adequate as very few of the loads handled by Gallery Direct weigh more than one tonne. An 11m three-stage mast was specified as the top beam is two bays higher than in the original storage area at 10.5m.

Three charging stations and a spare battery for the smaller Aisle Masters ensure constant availability for the 24/5 operation. An in-cab camera aids drivers when storing and picking from the highest beams and shorter than standard forks were also fitted to prevent them from protruding to the other side of the racking.

Gallery Direct’s operations manager, Ciaran Aldous, comments: “Growth has mushroomed in the last year or so and we have furthered our expansion by incorporating Dreamworks Beds and Frank Hudson Furniture Makers into our portfolio, so it was crucial to find a system that promised forklifts with optimum flexibility and the best possible use of every inch of space, and Aisle Master and Locators made this happen.” aisle-master.com locators.co.uk

After taking its first steps in five-axis machining, a high-end, top quality furniture manufacturer quickly realised it was its best way forward, and also invested in a machine with two five-axis heads, which is the first one of its kind in the UK.

Alphacam programs UK’s only Pro Evolution five-axis twin head machine for Ercol

Having used eight older CMS three-axis single table and twin table machines for a number of years, Ercol Furniture researched how technology could help it react to customers’ requirements quicker.

Roy Graves, who manages operations which support the entire factory, looked specifically at machining and CNC programming, and opted for the Alphacam solution from Vero Software.

“Once we’d decided to go down the five-axis route we knew we’d need a software that could optimise our machine so we could meet evershortening lead times. We particularly liked the Alphacam technology and what we could do with it and how we could manipulate toolpaths effectively with it.”

He says that after setting up a powerful CMS Ares machine, there was “a lot of trepidation” about driving the five-axis simultaneously, but they quickly discovered how easily Alphacam produced the complex toolpaths.

“It meant we saw immediate benefits in what we were able to machine. The accuracy of driving it into different work planes, and simulating the full five-axis cutting cycle was so simple and meant we developed our processes, improving considerably on the three-axis methods we were using previously.”

Ercol was founded in 1920, originally based in High Wycombe, before moving to the current 160,000ft2, purpose-built factory and showroom in nearby Princes Risborough in 2002. The Ercol brand of high quality, solid hardwood products includes tables, chairs, cabinets and

upholstered furniture for dining rooms, living rooms, bedrooms and home offices, and is sold at outlets such as Furniture Village, Barker & Stonehouse and independent retailers.

Alphacam produces its parts to a very high tolerance, ensuring perfect aesthetics and ease of assembly. “It’s extremely important to be able to guarantee the correct location of individual sticks, legs, backrests and rails, so they meet other components at the right place and at the right angle,” says Roy. Following their success with the Ares, they have now invested in a CMS Pro Evolution

machine with two five-axis heads – the first one of its kind in the UK. “It’s based on a rail module system which takes the components into the machining centre, carries out the first part of the machining, and then exchanges them on the rail displaying the other side for the machining to continue. It’s a fully automated process, and controlled through Alphacam.”

Working largely with ash and oak, along with smaller quantities of beech and walnut around 90% of its components are now programmed with Alphacam for cutting on the CNC machine tools.

Roy continues: “We manufacture wholly to customer orders. In an average week we’ll produce around 300 orders, each consisting of a number of products – and many of those separate products will comprise between ten and 25 individual components. So we’re machining a total of around 2500 parts a week.”

Roy says this would be impossible without Alphacam. “It not only saves up to 30% on time,

but because of its accuracy we’re machining everything correctly first time every time. It’s also helped reduce waste, and provides faster set-ups.”

For CNC programmer Kieran Gunn, the Pro Evolution led to a major change in his job role. “I feel really privileged, as I’ve been given responsibility to create all the parts that go on it.

I find it exciting that I’m writing programs for the first machine of its kind in the country.

“Previously, I was a setter, just loading and operating the three-axis machines. But now, I’ve been trained in programming with Alphacam and I have much more input in creating the individual pieces that are assembled together to make the finished furniture,” says Kieran.

The components are designed in SolidWorks, and once he has imported the CAD file into Alphacam he creates a bounding box so that he knows the full dimensions of the part. “I add extra stock so I know the size of the blank pieces

of rail I’m going to put into the machine. Then I reposition the model and assign the material.

After that, I put it into reference points in Alphacam where it’ll be loaded into the machine.”

Kieran finds Alphacam’s solid feature extraction function especially useful for taking a face and projecting the edges to the work plane.

“I use work planes regularly for the different sides of the part – and machining styles are also useful to help me work quicker and use similar toolpaths and styles, particularly for mortise and tenon joints.”

Kieran describes the software as “extremely flexible,” allowing different working style for individuals. “There are many ways of achieving the same result. I might work on a part in a certain way, and someone else may use a different method to achieve it.”

A point echoed by Kevin Dover, who programs the CMS Ares, and assists on the Pro Evolution.

He, too, was a machine setter before Ercol Furniture began its five-axis journey with Alphacam and the Ares in 2015. Now he mainly programs seat frames, along with a number of components from the bending shop, such as arms and back rails for stacking chairs, which he says require more complex programs. He imports the SolidWorks file into Alphacam, uses the feature extraction function to finalise geometry parameters, and assigns tools before outputting the post.

“Whether I’m programming for the Ares or the Pro Evolution, Alphacam’s versatility means it communicates successfully with different types of machines,” explains Kevin.

Roy Graves concludes: “Using Alphacam with the Ares and Pro Evolution gives us much faster cycle times. We can now start to look at reducing our batch sizes, and get down to single batch production.

“We’re typically looking to use the improved machining process to change our production methods further downstream on the shop floor. That will enable us to load the factory more often, meaning we can respond quicker, improving our customer turnaround times even more.” alphacam.com ercol.com

Based in two units, Fern Doors’ facility covers a combined total of 1300ft2 with 20 staff members. Dealing exclusively with trade customers, its range features a variety of materials and colours for custom-made kitchen and bedroom furniture.

As the demand for its bespoke fitted and sliding wardrobe doors increased, Fern Doors decided it was the right time to upgrade its production process.

Phil Philipson, managing director at Fern Doors explains: “We were seeing increases in both the volume of production and the size of the doors we were producing. It soon became obvious that our existing edge bander could no longer keep up with demand and to make matters worse, we started to face reliability problems as well.

“In addition to this, our existing return system no longer met our needs. For one thing, it wasn’t big enough and it also did not turn long panels on the far end after they had been edged. This meant we needed an additional operator to manually turn the doors so that they could begin

the edging process on the opposite edge. With 80% of our manufacturing work being large wardrobe doors, this was proving to be very time consuming and was slowing down production.”

Looking for the edge “We started our search for a replacement machine by looking at a couple of the popular edge bander manufacturers. However it was proving difficult to find a solution which not only matched our requirements but was also the right size for us. A couple that we looked at were either too small or too big – there was no

suitable medium size. This was an important factor for us because we are limited on space at our facility.

Having come from a background in cabinetry for kitchen and bedrooms Shaker2go found itself leaning more towards the Shakerstyle door than any other style and eventually decided to start producing Shaker products that would be available to order online for developers and tradesmen.

Having started in a small workshop and building the business up with just a small rail saw, md Phil Temple reinvested the profits he was making into better machinery to grow the business.

Investing in a Trotec Laser has enabled Yorkshire based joinery manufacturer S Taylor & Son to extend its business and launch sister company The Oak Folk.

Yorkshire joinery manufacturer branches out with Trotec A family-run business, S Taylor & Son has supplied quality joinery items to consumers and trade customers since 1850.

Although the company has a selection of CNC engraving machines at its disposal, the addition of a Trotec Speedy 400 Laser engraver has enabled a greater level of detail when engraving wooden items, such as directional signs for county councils and national parks. The laser has also opened up new business opportunities, with sister company The Oak Folk being founded as a result.

Jake Taylor, CNC and laser operative for S Taylor & Son, says: “Our Trotec laser has really enhanced our engraving capabilities. The accuracy of the laser allows us to engrave with much more detail than we have previously been able to.”

“We use our CNC machines to cut thicker materials, we then engrave them with our laser engraver. We have also diversified into other areas and set up The Oak Folk to create and sell kitchen accessories, such as chopping boards and wine holders, made with the offcuts from our core business.”

Quality panel-based manufacturer, Trovex, finds significant benefits with its recent investment into a Striebig Control 4216 vertical panel saw and helps the Hatfield firm broaden its ambitions.

Get lean with Striebig

“Lean manufacturing is a fundamental part of our business,” begins David Davis, operations director at Trovex. “This means putting the right processes in place to maintain quality, accuracy and speed of fabrication.” To assist in this manufacturing process, the hygienic interiors manufacturer has invested in its first Striebig Control 4216 vertical panel saw, which was supplied and installed by machinery distributor, TM Machinery.

As well as hygienic wall cladding, wash stations and cubicle systems, the Welham Green-based manufacturer also produces PVC encapsulated doors for the commercial sector. With production of its high-end door sets almost doubling in the last 12 months, David and his team were keen to invest in a new machine that could maximise efficiency and offer unswerving precision, speed and reliability in the face of increasing orders.

“We were previously cutting chipboard door blanks and birch ply or MDF internal door linings on a sliding table saw,” explains David.

“Handling was difficult, with panel sizes measuring up to 3m x 1220mm and door blanks measuring 900mm x 2.2m. Without a digital control, we also had to rely on the precision of individual fabricators.

“Unlike a conventional door, that can be planed on site to fit, our doors are fully encapsulated and are therefore manufactured to fine tolerance. This means every door that leaves our factory must fit the frame perfectly to avoid costly adjustments and delays. This made accuracy one of the most important factors to consider when specifying a new cutting machine.”

With the addition of a grooving unit, the laser-assisted Striebig Control 4216 vertical panel saw, equipped with digital measuring system on both axes, programmable control system and automated cut cycle, ticked all the boxes for Trovex and has helped the company develop its lean manufacturing programme.

“As soon as we saw the Striebig in action, there was no hesitation in my mind that this was the ideal vertical panel saw for us. The Swiss

brand has a great reputation and, with TM Machinery’s knowledge of the machine, we had every confidence in them and the saw’s abilities,” says David.

“We were not disappointed and we saw results immediately. The whole process has been simplified and cutting is always accurate thanks to the saw’s automated functions. What was previously a two-man operation is now the responsibility of one fabricator, and the time it takes to cut materials to size both vertically and horizontally has been slashed.”

The saw has already played a key role in several projects commissioned by the health authorities. “We had a very challenging installation at a London hospital at the end of last year that would have taken considerably more time without the Striebig,” says David.

“We needed to replace the existing door frames on a live hospital ward but they were made from steel and filled with concrete. To remove them would have involved a lot of time, dust and noise, so we came up with a system that essentially allowed us to fit a door within a door, cladding the existing door frames in the process.

“The concept needed complete accuracy to limit disruption on the hospital ward. The Striebig was invaluable in this installation and allowed us to complete the project with minimal fuss and within a shorter timeframe.”

David adds: “The Striebig has already brought a lot of benefits to the business and we’re now in a position to work on a wider range of projects. Research and development is high on our agenda and we’re always looking at ways to improve what we do. The introduction of the Control has given us the opportunity to innovate and maximise our potential, whilst maintaining our core manufacturing processes.”

Altendorf’s CNC rip fence boasts a smooth traverse speed of 250mm/s with an accuracy of +/− 1/10mm. The high-precision five-point recirculating ball spindle system requires very little maintenance.

Altendorf’s patented crosscut mitre-fence with DIGIT LD featuring integral length compensation, makes performing bevel cuts and mitre cuts precise with one function. The DIGIT LD display shows all stop settings on a conveniently placed screen on the fence. Used in conjunction with the powerful EvoDrive, up to 999 named programs can be saved.

This is a huge benefit for Exmedia as it can now set and save the dimensions for contracts which require repeat-sized materials.

“The new Altendorf F45 Evodrive is superb. If we need to make a

large number of repeat cuts, we simply create a program to save the sawblade and rip fence positions.

A Midlands cabinetmaker has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its operating costs.

Cabinetmaker invests in heater from Wood Waste Technology AS Cabinets, a family business manufacturing bespoke cabinets for public and trade wanted to purchase a wood waste heater to utilise the waste wood generated daily to reduce expenditure on heating and waste disposal.

Accounts manager, Helen Humphries, explains: “We’ve wanted to purchase a wood waste heater for a while, as there’s no heating in the factory so it’s extremely cold in winter.

The cold doesn’t just affect our six employees, it also affect our machines, especially those that bond the glue, as the cold temperature sometimes makes the glue too hard to use.

“We were also spending around £250 a week on skips to dispose of our wood offcuts – so a wood waste heater was the obvious solution to both these problems.”

to purchase, Helen started researching wood waste heaters on the internet to find the best one for the company’s 3000 sq.ft premises. Improved productivity through software The interior design and joinery business has always been a tough business but especially in recent years the competition has increased significantly. The more the competition in the market increases, the more companies have to be productive to win tenders. As the material prices and labour costs are more or less at their peak, the industry is now about to improve its workflows – and that is only possible with software and better organisation.

Currently most of the industry started already to implement some kind of software in order to speed up their process in certain departments. AutoCAD 2D became a standard for design and technical shop floor drawings within the industry. But all other necessary information during the whole production process is very often still created manually which results into high time consumption and error-prone processes. But this is no longer necessary today.

Companies can save a lot of time in sales, engineering and production if they didn’t need to reinvent the wheel every time.

What makes it complicated is the amount of different work steps which have to be processed during the execution of an order – estimation, shop floor drawings, cutting lists, BOQs, stock management, material orders, time calculation and capacity planning for the factory, quality control, shipping organisation, CNC files and so on… and of course, at the end of the day it would be necessary to do a post-calculation of the job – all this in as little time as possible.

But how to optimise such a complex process?

The only way is to make information which has been already created available for the next process.

Not as a sheet of paper – it has to be digital so the information can be used straight away.

This is exactly what CAD+T Software is offering to interiors businesses. Even for bespoke furniture, the information will only be created once and all other necessary data will be created by the software automatically – from design to installation.

But where lies the secret of such a system?

The heart of the system is the drawing. Still built on AutoCAD, the CAD+T add-on gives draftsmen the possibility of drawing the parts directly in 3D even though they can still work on 2D. On these parts, information about materials, finishes, edges, profiles, hardware, etc can be saved. So the drawing consists of more than only lines and text – it actually understands what is being drawn.

This fact provides the opportunity to receive from the shop floor drawing automatically a cutting list as well as a bill of materials and many other documents. There are further different production lists possible, whatever a company specifically requires – from material order reports to packing lists.

CNC Lots of joineries have already invested into CNC woodworking machines in order to speed up work and improve quality. But obviously

these machines need to receive the right information in order to process the job. Even this information can be created automatically from CAD+T’s software. The company has specifically developed a highly sophisticated interface for CNC machines. The interface separates all pieces according to material and sends the information directly to the machines.

The necessary working method according to the different materials, oversizes, starting points, tools and all other required information will be chosen automatically as well. CAD+T offers interfaces to all common three- and five-axis CNC machines on the market as well as tools for lipping, vacuum positioning and nesting.

Users can assign certain jobs to certain employees and their execution will be managed by the system. Jobs, deadlines, orders and deliveries are part of the system and will be synchronised with Outlook. Therefore they are available all the time, independently, whether in the office or on site.

This leads to less queries and secures an undisturbed operation. Additional modules available are CRM, estimation through different methods, document control, ordering system, invoice control, variable stock management including half finished goods, part tracking through the production process and picking/ shipping lists.

As the production process becomes more and more machine-driven, the handling of the production becomes very difficult only to be done by verbal communication of foremen as it is not measurable. To receive better productivity of a factory, management will need to understand the right costs and times of it – and software can provide exactly this information.

By barcoding, companies will receive a feedback from the factory, knowing where a certain part or a project is at any moment within the production process, what the material costs are for it, and which labour has done which work on it already – so users will understand where gain and where money is won and lost. This provides management with the opportunity to decide, based on real figures, where to invest or where to change processes in order to increase

In short, this means that after the finalisation of the drawing, all other information – technical or commercial – is acheived with a push of a button. Software can therefore offer huge time savings of around 60% per order as well as error prevention of up to 80%.
