Comment Bob was right – the times most certainly are a-changin’ In many ways, we seem to be living in an tumultuous age where new conventions are being drawn up, old ones are being updated or eroded and some being wantonly dismantled. And while this manoeuvring plays out, of course business must continue to drive on in an evermore complex world. But, in addition to the obstacles and challenges that beset us, the sociopolitical upheaval will also provide businesses with an open-minded approach. In nature, more often than not, it is the flexible who thrive, and the imaginative who prosper – and so it is in business. One of the more noticeable traits which I have noticed coming to light at two of 2017’s trade shows thus far was the growth in refinement and quality of furniture manufacturers’ products – in terms of the materials used and the manufacturing processes deployed. Across all sectors, from upholstery to beds and mattresses through to cabinet, the furniture industry seems to be satisfying a consumer demand for higher-calibre products, sporting an improved level of craftsmanship and presentation than has been the norm for some time. One suggestion is that this migration has come about in part as a reaction to TV programmes and social media featuring high-end interiors, and probably also to the impressive strides made in recent times by hotels, bars and restaurants, which together have definitely heightened the demand for more upscale interior design generally – and that has to be a good thing for the British furniture and joinery industry. A recent survey by the CBI says that UK manufacturers are more optimistic about their business situation and exporting prospects, while reporting strong growth in domestic orders over the

last quarter. It revealed that the volume of domestic orders rose at the fastest pace since July 2014 in the three months to January, while export orders continued to grow, albeit below expectations. FIRA also has been busy crunching the numbers, publishing its latest statistical digest, which provides a summary of how the UK furniture industry performed to the end of 2015. Published in November 2016, the report covers 2012-15, and includes some estimates for 2016. Although the time frame is limited to publiclyavailable data, FIRA’s digest provides one of the clearest pictures of the industry available. Total provisional furniture manufacturing turnover in 2015 was just under £8b, up more than 7% on the previous year and over 20% higher than in 2012. Interestingly, the value of 2015 imports from the EC was £2.6b, an increase on the previous year when it was £2.3b. Elsewhere in this issue we look at edgebanding materials and technology, and unveil news of Egger’s biggest-ever portfolio of décors for furniture manufacturers. Norbord’s Inverness plant gathers pace Equipment for Norbord Europe’s £95m mill expansion at Inverness has been purchased and will be shipped to Scotland over the next few months as work gathers pace on the construction of the new plant. Equipment for Norbord Europe’s £95m mill expansion at Inverness has been purchased and will be shipped to Scotland over the next few months as work gathers pace on the construction of the new plant. The equipment includes the forming line; the screening, blending and resin system; the heat-energy system, dryer and Wesp stack – which have been purchased from Germany and Italy – and the finishing end, which has been ordered from the USA. Construction of the ‘lay down’ area for the equipment to be stored before installation has been completed, along with the future logging yard. At present, the foundations – stretching over 200m – are under way for the press, together with the main building and dryer. A new continuous press has also arrived

in Scotland and is awaiting delivery once the site is prepared. The press was decommissioned from Norbord’s Grande Prairie mill in Alberta, where it was deconstructed and packed into 80 shipping containers. These were trucked all the way across Canada and shipped from Thunder Bay, Ontario, across the

Atlantic to the port of Nigg, near Inverness. Alan McMeekin, vice-president, finance and operations director of Norbord Europe says it has been quite a logistical undertaking: “The press foundations are taking shape and everything is on schedule so far. “We’ll really see change in the new

FIRA’s latest statistical digest provides a summary of how the UK furniture industry performed to the end of 2015, inspecting data from Government bodies such as the Office for National Statistics, HM Customs and Revenue and Communities and Local Government to identify the sector’s underlying manufacturing and spending trends.

Published in November last year, the report covers 2012-15, and includes some estimates for 2016. Although the timeframe is limited to publicly-available data, FIRA’s digest provides one of the clearest pictures of the industry available. Covering areas such as national economic trends, the structure of the UK furniture manufacturing industry and trading relationships with the rest of the world, the report delivers figures across contract, office and domestic subsectors.

Key findings of the latest report include: National economic trends * At the end of 2008 total net unsecured lending, having increased on a regular basis over previous years, started to fall, bottoming out at £207,092m in June 2012. Since then it has increased with lending at the end of 2015 being 9.3% higher than at the end of 2014. * Some of this increase in lending was attributable to credit cards (3.9% from 2014 to 2015) although this was significantly smaller than the increase of 7.4% from 2013 to 2014. * Total outstanding lending, including that secured by individuals and housing associations on dwellings, peaked at £1548b in 2015. This was 3.5% higher at the end of 2015 than at the end of 2014. * This greater rate of increase in total lending has been driven by lending secured on dwellings which increased by 2.4% from the end of 2014 to the end of 2015, whereas in the previous year the increase was only 1.5%. * At the end of 2015 lending secured on dwellings reached £1285b and preliminary data for 2016 show that this figure increased to £1305b by June of that year. * The number of dwellings starts in the UK almost halved between 2007/8 and 2008/9.

Since then they had continued to increase gradually, but over the period 2011 to 2013 starts fell by over 10,000 compared with 2010/11. This decline reversed significantly in 2013/14 with starts increasing by 35,090 (28%) compared with the previous year. Starts in 2014/15 reached 171,850. However, this was only an increase of 9750, which equated to a 6% increase on the previous year. “One of the Government’s drivers for 2017 is the continued revival of the new homes market, including support for a significant number of affordable homes,” comments the digest’s author, Dr Peter Beele. “It is not my main area of expertise, and the experts appear to be divided, with some feeling the uncertainty around Brexit will slow the market and others feeling that buyers may take advantage of continued low interest rates. No-one seems to know for sure “The Telegraph suggested that the housing market in 2016 fluctuated and was not as buoyant as might have been expected, and it is anticipated that, while housing has rebounded more strongly than expected after the Brexit referendum, the level of transactions has dropped, and growth in 2017 may be notably slower than in 2016. Others have higher hopes for the next 12 months, as the market adjusts to the ‘new normal’ and buyers take advantage of low interest rates.” * The total number of property transactions above £40,000 reached 1.3m. However, the increase from 2014 to 2015 was considerably smaller (0.7%) than the YoY increases for the previous two years, which were just under 14%. * Total consumer expenditure in the UK increased between 2012 and 2015 to £1136b (just over a 7% increase). The most significant growth in expenditure over this period occurred in net tourism at 53%, followed by clothing and footwear, which increased by 16%. * Expenditure on furnishings, household goods and house maintenance increased from 2012 to 2015 by 14%, with the majority of this growth attributable to the period 2014 to 2015, where increase in expenditure over the year was 6%. ›

* Consumer expenditure on furniture and furnishings was £16.2b in 2015 and exceeded all other spend in the furnishings, household goods and house maintenance sector. This represented a 33% increase from 2012, with consistent YoY growth at between 9% and 12%.

* Furniture and furnishings retail sales in 2016 have continued to increase, with first and second quarter consumer expenditures being respectively 3.6% and 2.4% higher than for the equivalent periods in 2015. * Household textiles expenditure also exhibited a massive increase from 2012 to 2015 (37%), followed by small electric household appliances at 27%. * The greatest reductions in expenditure from 2012 to 2015 were in furniture and furnishings repair (58%) and carpets and floorcoverings (18%). * Within the retail sector furniture and furnishings repair spend having reached £59m in 2012 – which represented a significant recovery after a very tough year in 2010 – dropped to only £25m in 2015, although anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise and the true value may be hidden within other statistics. * The household goods sector has seen a marked increase in internet sales, with YoY growth in September 2016 equating to 44.4% (compared with September 2015). This value of £61.3m per week equates to 10.4% of retail sales in the sector and 6.6% of UK retail sales in total.

Furniture industry trends * Total provisional furniture manufacturing turnover in 2015 was just under £8b, which was 7.1% higher than the previous year and 20.8% higher than in 2012. * Furniture manufacturing in 2012 equated to 1.28% of the UK’s total manufacturing turnover, whereas in 2015 this had increased to 1.55%. “On the surface the reason for this change is quite simple – there has been greater consumer demand, as indicated by the retail figures,” says Peter. “In addition, there has been renewed commercial development over the last few years. However, I am not privy to what makes the consumer to decide to spend, and spend on furniture. “Consumer lending was relatively static for a few years, but more recently has increased YoY. Clearly they felt confident enough to borrow to purchase items (such as furniture, which tends to be sold via credit agreements). Also, remember that much of this data is from 2015 (pre-Brexit vote). “Having said that, predictions for 2016’s results suggest another increase in furniture manufacturer turnover – possibly by as much as 6 or 7%, but I wouldn’t bet my mortgage on this until firmer data is released mid-way through 2017. “ * The total number of registered furniture manufacturers in 2015 was 5998. * Provisional data for UK furniture manufacturing indicates a 7% decrease in average employment numbers from 2012 to 2015 (86,000 to 80,000). “The employment figures are less reliable than they used to be,” Peter clarifies. “There are indications that net CAPEX for the sector has increased over recent years, which might suggest investment in plant and machinery, but I don’t know whether automation is a major contributory factor to this decrease – this would require a much more in-depth analysis. “There are other, simpler reasons for increased turnover with fewer employees too, such as price increases.”

* Despite 2015 turnover being valued at almost 1.3% of the total for UK manufacturing, the furniture sector employed 3.2% of all UK manufacturing personnel, which is estimated to have equated to 2.4% of the UK manufacturing wage bill. * The office and shop furniture sector (predominantly contract) saw an 18% increase in turnover from 2012 to 2015, reaching £2.3b. * Turnover in the kitchen sector having fallen from a high of £1.7b in 2008 to a low of £1.1b in 2011 has since recovered. It increased to £1.6b in 2015, although these provisional estimates suggest a drop of 5% compared with the previous year. * The mattress subsector has historically been relatively stable compared to its counterparts, but over recent years has exhibited substantial growth. Turnover went from £0.56b in 2012 to £0.75b in 2015 (33% increase), with an increase of 13% from 2014 to 2015. “Mattress imports as a percentage of the home markets are comparatively low (12% in 2015, dropping from 13% in 2014), which shows that UK manufacturers have a good grip on the market,” comments Peter. “Perhaps the recent NBF campaigns to ensure that its members follow an audited Code of Practice is finding traction with retailers and distributors. * The ‘other furniture’ subsector accounts for 47% of the industry’s total turnover and, as such, has a large influence on the overall performance figures for the whole sector. Any recovery in turnover here tends to reflect the overall position for the sector. * Time series data indicates that in recent years 2010 was the best year for the ‘other furniture’ subsector in terms of turnover, peaking at £3.4b. However, over subsequent years, turnover continued to decrease, dropping to a low of £2.9b in 2012. Since 2012 there has been a slow recovery and in 2015 turnover reached £3.3b, which represented a 14% increase over that period. More recently, from 2014 to 2015, there ›

* 82.5% of companies turned over less than £1m and the largest percentage of companies was in the £100k-£250k turnover band (30.4%).

* The retail figure for furniture and furnishings repair was £25m in 2015 which reflected a continued reduction in consumer expenditure since 2012. However, this doesn’t mirror manufacturing data for furniture and furnishings repair which show that, since 2012, turnover increased YoY up to £193m in 2014. Unfortunately, preliminary data for 2015 indicated a turnover reduction back to £165m.

* In the office and shop sector the number of smaller companies was lower than for the other sectors, with 66.9% of companies turning over less than £1m, and in the ‘other furniture’ sector it was slightly higher at 86.7%.

* The industry continues to be dominated by micro and small- to medium-sized businesses, with only 285 companies (4.6%) operating at turnovers in excess of £5m. 130 companies turned over more than £10m in 2016. These numbers are slightly higher than the previous year, which indicates that some of the larger companies have continued to grow. “In fact, there has been growth in the number of companies within each turnover category above and including £500,000 to £1m, which is another indicator that growth in manufacturing turnover is attributable to the development of existing companies rather than new entrants into the market.

* The mattress sector was significantly different as it had proportionately more large organisations, with only 48.3% of companies turning over less than £1m. * There was a significant proportion of extremely small companies within the sector, with 56.8% of organisations operating at turnovers of less than £250,000 (comprising 25 fewer companies than the previous year). International trade * Imports of furniture into the UK in 2015 increased to almost £5.4b compared with the previous year’s figure of £4.8b. The prediction for 2016, based on October 2016 trade data to date, is that this figure could reach £5.8b. * The majority of these imports originated from

China (£1.8b), its share being 33% of all furniture received into the UK. * Italy remained the second largest 2015 furniture exporter to the UK, with its share of total imports into the UK remaining at 11%. * The value of 2015 imports from the EC was £2.6b, an increase on the previous year when it was £2.3b. * Data shows that furniture exports have gradually increased in recent years (with some minor fluctuations) from £830m in 2012 to £1b in 2015. This figure for 2015 is an improvement of 7% on the previous year. * The prediction for 2016 (based on October 2016’s trade figures) is that exports will continue to increase and could reach £1.12b. * Exports to the Republic of Ireland have increased significantly over recent years. In 2015, it received 20% of all furniture exports, compared with 19% the previous year, and 17% the year before that. This equated to £205m in 2015. “The RoI has always been the favoured export market,” says Peter,“but, in real terms, we need to put this in context – total exports were a little over £200m (£25m up on the previous year) – which is small compared to the total UK manufacturing turnover of £8b. “I couldn’t put this down to a decline in manufacturing in RoI, as they also exported more to the UK in 2015 than in 2014 – thus the trade gap remained similar, at around £140m for both years.” * Whilst the UK has traditionally targeted its exports at the Irish Republic and the US, the US, France and Germany were each recipients of 10% of UK furniture exports. * Trade with leading European nations continued to be the other main source of export income, and the main trade destinations were similar to those in 2014. Exports to the EC totalled £630m in 2015, an increase of £99m, with Germany, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Italy being the primary recipients.

* The negative trade gap continued to widen, with increases in imports outstripping any small increases in exports. It reached £4.4b in 2015 and could exceed £4.7b by the end of 2016. “Twelve months ago the digest flagged a worrying trend of an ever-widening trade gap between import and export data, and this trend has continued,” says Peter. “2015 saw imports of furniture into the UK increasing to almost £5.4b, compared with the 2014 figure of £4.8b. Notably, the prediction for 2016, based on October 2016 trade data to date, is that this figure could reach £5.8b – a £1b increase in just 24 months.”

* Whilst exports to European countries are a positive asset, the reality is that many of these countries continued to export more to the UK than vice versa. This status, along with that for many other products, will impact on any Brexitassociated trade negotiations. * The main positive trade gap, as in previous years, was with the Republic of Ireland. This gap was £141m. However, whilst exports increased by £31m over the year, these were cancelled out by imports to the same value. * After this there was a number of countries with which the UK benefited from much smaller positive trade gaps in 2015, starting with the UAE and the US at £22m, followed by Saudi Arabia at £18m.

“Uncertainties over the impact of Brexit make it harder to predict how the industry will fare over the next few years. I would have thought that it would be in Europe’s own interests to ensure that beneficial trade arrangements are in place” “The latest figures provide some cause for optimism,” concludes Peter. “A YoY manufacturing turnover increase from 2014 to 2015 of 7%, proceeded by a similar prospective percentage increase from 2015 to 2016, is good news in anyone’s book, and furniture appears to be outperforming many other manufacturing sectors in percentage growth terms. “However, uncertainties over the impact of Brexit make it harder to predict how the industry will fare over the next few years. Suffice to say, Europe is a net exporter of furniture to the UK (as it is for many other manufactured items) and I would have thought that it would be in its own interests to ensure that beneficial trade arrangements are in place. “Should this happen, then the impact on exports would also probably be minimal. However, there are many other financial implications of Brexit which may filter down to consumers and the disposable income in their pockets, and I don’t know how this will pan out. “I’ll certainly be watching with keen interest, and the Furniture Industry Research Association will continue to support members, and the wider furniture industry, through our knowledge, information and research.”

Optimism among manufacturers rises at fastest pace in two years – CBI survey UK manufacturers are more optimistic about their business situation and exporting prospects, while reporting strong growth in domestic orders over the previous quarter, according to the latest quarterly CBI Industrial Trends Survey. The survey of 461 manufacturers reveals that the volume of domestic orders rose at the fastest pace since July 2014 in the three months to January, while export orders continued to grow, but below expectations. Headcount edged higher having dipped for the first time in more than six years in the last quarter. Demand is expected to grow strongly over the next three months, driven by both domestic and export orders, while production is also expected to advance briskly – expectations for output growth are also the highest since July 2014. Concerns persist over access to skilled labour, however, with almost a quarter of respondents – the

highest since July 1989 – observing that skilled labour availability could limit output over the next few months. Sterling’s depreciation continues to impact prices as unit costs rose at their highest pace in over five years, amid expectations that this will intensify over the next quarter. But on the flip side, manufacturers continue to see the competitive benefits arising from sterling’s weakness, reporting a further strong rise in competitiveness within the EU and putting the rise in competitiveness in non-EU markets at a survey high. The pick-up in output has meanwhile eaten into spare

Key findings – past quarter: • Domestic orders rose at their fastest pace (+16%) since July 2014 (+23%). Export orders rose more moderately (+5%), and below expectations (+17%) • 37% of businesses reported an increase in total orders, and 21% a decrease, giving a balance of +16% • 32% of firms said the volume of output over the past three months was up and 18% said it was down, giving a balance of +15% • 22% of manufacturers said employment numbers were up, and 18% said they were down, giving a balance of +4% • 27% of firms said they were more optimistic about the general business situation than three months ago and 12% were less optimistic, giving a rounded balance of +15% – the highest since January 2015 (+15%). Optimism about export prospects for the year ahead rose strongly (+19%) • Firms competitiveness in the EU rose strongly again (+28%) while their competitiveness in non-EU markets rose at the fastest pace in the survey’s history (+26%) • Average domestic prices continued to grow at an above average pace (+9% vs -3%) for the third quarter in a row, while average export prices rose strongly (+16% vs LR average of -9%). • The proportion of firms working below capacity (46%) was at its lowest since April 2015 (44%) • Manufacturers intend to increase spending on product and process innovation strongly over the year (+27%) and a higher rate level than in the previous quarter, while spending on training and retraining also continued to grow robustly (+27%). • The number of firms citing access to skilled labour as a factor likely to limit output (24%) was at its highest since July 1989 (24%).

Rain Newton-Smith, CBI chief economist, said: “UK manufacturers are firing on all cylinders right now with domestic orders up and optimism rising at the fastest pace

in two years. “The weaker Pound is driving export optimism for the year ahead, but is having a detrimental impact on costs for firms and ultimately for consumers. “The new Industrial Strategy can support our manufacturing base by offering a shared long-term vision for the key sectors and regions of the economy and evidence-based plans for government and business collaboration. The CBI and its members across the country stand ready to support the Government in achieving this.”

DCS steps up to the mark for South Yorkshire stairmaker

Founded almost 30 years ago by Glyn Ducker, South Yorkshire-based joinery manufacturer GD Woodworking has relocated to a new manufacturing facility at Canklow Meadows Industrial Estate, to the south of Rotherham town centre and just a couple of minutes from junction 33 on the M1. GD Woodworking specialises in the manufacture of timber staircases for many national house builders and commercial developers throughout the UK, and the company has gained a well-deserved reputation in the industry for high quality, large volume staircase production. Over the years, a consistently burgeoning order book has driven investment in new machinery, which in turn has often necessitated extensions to the company’s previous home. Continued growth finally precipitated the

company’s decision to move to bigger premises in 2016 and, although the new factory was just a five-mile trip down the A630, a production facility manned by a dedicated workforce of some 70 staff, along with over 30 woodworking machines, had to be relocated – with no perceptible interruption to production. As well as several CNC machines, the company’s armoury of production machinery includes planer moulders, plus a variety of saws and sanders, along with a host of other classical stairmaking equipment, a spray booth and drying enclosure. A vital factor in achieving continuous production would be the provision of effective dust extraction from day one at the new site, and Glyn Ducker had no hesitation in discussing the planned move with Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS). “DCS have supplied and maintained the dust extraction plant at GD Woodworking for

many years,” says Glyn, “and we were confident that they would provide us with the best solution to our extraction requirements at the new site.” Company sales manager for DCS, Andy Hives, first discussed the project with Glyn back in August: “From the outset Glyn explained that he was looking for a solution that would utilise as much of the existing extraction plant as possible, but that cessation of production was not going to be an option.” Less than three years ago, DCS had installed an Ecogate energy-saving system and increased overall extraction capacity to around 60,000m3/hr with the addition of a new 22,000m3/hr modular filter unit, and Glyn was keen that these assets should be incorporated in the new system. With a blank canvas of over 30,000ft2 of manufacturing space to work with, the engineering design team at DCS formulated a plan to transfer key plant and machinery over ›

a four-week period; allowing production to be undertaken concurrently at both sites. A final five-day window, at the end of November, was set aside to install remaining machines and fully commission the extraction system. “Before the transfer of any woodworking machines commenced, DCS installed a complete ductwork system at the new site,” explains Andy. “Additionally, an extension for the existing filter unit was assembled and sited in readiness, and a transport loop system was installed which would transfer filtered waste to two bulk collection trailers.” The extraction volume requirement at the new factory would be 80,000m3/hr, supplied by a bank of five extraction fans, with each fan being independently controlled by an Ecogate PowerMASTER variable speed drive with integral greenBOX 12+. This was a big step up from the 22,000m3/hr air capacity of the existing filter that was being relocated, but the modular construction of the unit allowed for a straightforward expansion of the system from three filter sections plus one inlet section, to eight filter sections plus two inlet sections. To complete the line-up DCS supplied an additional Ecogate PowerMASTER unit and two new extraction fans – all four of the existing PowerMASTER units were utilised in the new system, along with three existing fans. The modular filter unit employs patented antistatic Superbag filter media, and features regeneration cleaning fans which travel across the top of the unit and blow reverse air down the internal area of the tubular filter bags – detaching dust from the filter media and allowing it to fall into the hopper below. a rotary valve, and transferred by a closed-loop waste transport system to the manually-selected collection trailer. As recommended by ATEX regulations, the system is also protected by the inclusion of back pressure explosion isolation flap valves which, in the event of an explosion, are designed to prevent the effect of a pressure wave and flames from travelling back along the ductwork in which it is mounted and into the factory. With all preparatory work at the new site completed, and a DCS MTFA Mk VI multi-bag filter unit in place to provide immediate temporary extraction, one CNC machine a week, for the next four weeks, was relocated and commissioned. However, the planned ‘Wednesday-to-Sunday window for final installation and commissioning effectively became three days, as production work at the old site overran, with some machines still running right up to the Friday.

Glyn Ducker has nothing but praise for the DCS team who were available throughout to connect woodworking machines to the extraction system as they arrived on-site, and complete final assembly and commissioning of the extended filter unit: “The planning and hard work enabled us to be fully operational again on the Monday – and it’s all credit to DCS that, whilst moving premises, we actually manufactured more staircases in November 2016 than in any month previous.” Andy Hives concludes: “At the new site, GD Woodworking has an additional 45,000ft2 of space available which will allow the company to more than double its production capacity. Unless you’ve been on a desert island for the last couple of years, you will have heard a lot about zero-joint technology in the woodworking industry.

Oakhurst opts for Ney’s Fravol edgebander Shop fitting and joinery manufacturer, Oakhurst (Southport), contacted Ney as it was looking for a comprehensive machine package including a veneer press, glue spreader and CNC router. Included in its requirements was an edgebander capable of applying coiled material for its carcass production as well as 6-8mm solid wood lippings for its fire doors. The Fravol Smart S600 features a touch screen PC which serves as a control hub displaying the working programmes needed for both thick- and thin-edging from first- to final-pass, automatically positioning the pressure beam. Using a photocell, the timing of all the working units is guaranteed. This means there is no physical contact with the panels reducing the risk of damage from multiple micro switches. The machine is equipped with the following working units: • Riepe release agent application – to prevent PUR adhesive contaminating the panel faces. • Pre-milling – to give a perfect edge for the application of the edging material. • Infra red heater – this heats the edge of the panel to remove excess moisture and ensure the panel is presented at the correct temperature to achieve maximum bond at the gluing station. • Teflon-coated glue pot – with a heat-up time of 6-8 minutes the pot is programmed with a working temperature as well as standby. The temperature will automatically revert to standby if the machine is not used to prevent burning of glue. • Optional fusion unit – this hot-air system is used for the application of fusion extruded materials for a seamless finish. • Pressure station – the pressure rollers are

controlled by the PLC, and automatically adjust to the correct edging thickness according to the programme selected. • End-trim saws – again controlled by the PLC to flush trim the ends of the panel with either a square or bevelled edge. • Bevel-trimming station – with lateral positioning from the PLC to trim up to 2mm thick material (3mm on request). • Corner rounding station – the corner rounding station also profiles the top and bottom panel edges ensuring a continuous profile on all four panel edges. • Profile scraper – this unit removes any chatter from the machining operations and will follow any minor variations in the panel. Starbank’s PURedge Advantage Edgebanding is a critical and key component for interior fit out. It’s the process that is in contact when opening drawers, doors or sitting at a desk or work surface. The design of the pot is such that it allows existing residual glue to be quickly drained in just five minutes making cleaning and switching between different glue types or colours, fast and efficient. Once emptied, the new glue is up to temperature in less than 10 minutes. The quick drain system is particularly beneficial when alternating between EVA and PUR glue. The Duomelt allows the EVA hotmelt adhesive to be quickly and easily removed from the tank before the PUR granules are added. After processing it is important to remove the PUR and purge the tank with cleaning granules to prevent the residual glue from fully reacting. Once cleaned, the remaining cleaner can be easily drained from the tank allowing EVA granules to be added. The hassle and time required for glue removal and cleaning is vastly reduced with the Duomelt. EVA works at a higher temperature, around 190°C, compared with PUR at around 130-140°C. The Duomelt system is controlled from the onboard touch screen control with intuitive, easyto-use temperature mapping to precisely adjust the glue temperature for optimal application. An automatic thermostatic control monitors and adjusts the glue temperature and puts the unit into stand-by when idle to prevent scorching of the glue and reducing energy consumption. Precision machined from a single piece of aluminium, the interior surface of the Duomelt glue tank is smooth and even with no edges or shape angles to inhibit glue flow. The slope of the

tank has been carefully considered to increase flow rate and ensure a consistent delivery while also minimising draining time when cleaning. Overall energy consumption has been reduced with improved thermodynamics through the use of efficient heat transmitting materials in construction. Improved sealing of the glue tank assembly minimises moisture absorption extending the lifespan of PUR glue. In addition, all working parts in contact with the glue are Teflon coated to ensure smooth glue delivery and quick draining. Cehisa has also incorporated a new design and layout into the Duomelt with improved performance of the glue transmission system. Glue is delivered to the panel from both the upper and lower points of the application roller that incorporates built-in heating elements to maintain optimum working temperature right at the point of adhesion. Furniture and joinery manufacturers can benefit greatly from using PUR hotmelt adhesive. It provides unsurpassed water resistance, especially useful in kitchen and bathroom areas, is heat resistant up to 150°C, provides the highest bond strength and can leave a virtually invisible glue joint when used with Cehisa edgebanders. Mathews Kitchens increases edging capacity with the Homag Ambition 2274

For those involved in the contract furnishing markets, the importance of being able to consistently produce high quality panel products to tight time frames is paramount. By their nature, large contract jobs demand specific delivery deadlines and often come with heavy penalty clauses for late supply. That’s why more and more manufacturers are turning to top end, technically advanced German woodworking machinery they can rely on 100%. “Our guiding principle is the first-class quality and finish of all our work,” claims Bernard Mathews, managing director at Mathews Kitchens in Dunleer, Ireland. He continues: “Five years ago we expanded our manufacturing into the contract office furniture market, the demands of which are completely different to those of the bespoke kitchen and bedroom furniture industry that was the foundation of our business. “To compete in the contract office furniture market you need machinery that can produce large volumes of panels quickly, but without compromising the quality of the finish or the strength of edge bonding. “We have been a customer of Homag UK for over 20 years and have invested in a Holzma beam saw, a flat-bed Weeke CNC, a Homag BAZ CNC and a Weeke BHX 050 routing and drilling unit. So, when we were looking for a new edgebander that would meet stringent production demands, we naturally talked to them first.”

First-class service and knowledgeable advice “Derek Reid is the area manager in Ireland for Homag UK and over the years we have come to trust and highly value his opinions. When we discussed our plans with Derek he came back with a couple of options that would meet our goals. After carrying out our own research and seeing the Homag Ambition 2274 in action, it was clear to us that this was the machine that would meet all the production demands of our business. “It certainly wasn’t the cheapest option but, when we’d added the solid wood edging package and boomerang return system, we knew it was the right solution to give us a real advantage over our competition.” A bold decision that has more than paid off “The Ambition 2274 uses PU gluing which not only gives the panels a very clean gluing line, but also provides a much stronger adhesion to the panel over the traditional hot melt solution with the added advantage of very high water repellence. “The speed of the machine is impressive too. Our previous edgebander gave us great results at 11m per minute, but the Ambition 2274 more than doubles our capacity. It will happily run at 25m per minute and yet the finish quality is absolutely superb, whether we are producing 10 or 100+ panels.

“Our decision to purchase the Homag Ambition 2274 was made on performance, not price and I am so glad we took that bold choice. If we’d have gone for a cheaper option, it would not have been able to cope with the high volumes of work we have put through the 2274.” German efficiency backed by a professional team in the UK “As you would expect from a leading German company, the installation process was completed with military precision. We were given a 12-week lead-time for the installation and everything happened on the precise date and time set out in that original schedule. “It was very impressive and made liaising with the extraction, electrical and other contractors very easy. On the third and fourth days of the installation schedule, Homag’s Alec Workman trained our staff on the machine and, after just a couple of weeks, we were enjoying production capacity benefits of at least 30%. Homag’s powerTouch touchscreen controller makes operating the machine easy and the resetting of the machine for different jobs is quick, reliable and very accurate. “It has enabled us to compete for and win significantly bigger contracts because we are absolutely confident we can produce the quality and yet still deliver on time. The machine has allowed us to attract new customers, many of whom are stipulating the use of PU gluing which, of course, the Ambition 2274 provides. “Since installing the Ambition 2274, we’ve pushed it to its limits; despite this, it hasn’t let us down once. Over the years, Homag has always been there when we need them, so we know that even if we do have an issue it will be fixed quickly. The service they provide overall is superb and even the Homag Finance package they negotiated for us was cheaper than our own bank could offer,” enthuses Bernard Mathews. New edgebander with zero glue-line finish for Custom Made Kitchens

Doncaster-based Custom Made Kitchens was looking for a machine to apply edging tape with no visible glue line. The firm’s goal was to produce high quality kitchen doors as well as cabinets. With 25 years of supplying his trade customers throughout the UK, it was clear to MD Keith Hackshall that PUR adhesive was the way to go.

“The simplicity of the glue system was a big part of the decision to choose the Ott edgebander,” he recalls, “when compared to other systems on the market, the application of adhesive is a far simpler system and the only one we have seen which is fully electronically controlled. “We specialise in the manufacture and supply of kitchens and bedrooms to kitchen retailers. I want to provide my customers with an absolutely top quality finish. That is the reason we chose the Ott machine. The new Ott Strongedge is the fourth edgebander in our production line and the first one to apply PUR adhesive.” When the company started looking for a new machine, Derby-based FEN UK was high on the list of potential machine suppliers. One of the existing machines at Custom Made Kitchens’ factory is also an Ott edgebander, which has been utilised in production for about seven years and has been giving a very good, reliable service. The company has very recently installed the new edgebander supplied by specialist

Munich was the venue where Pfleiderer just recently presented its new Design Collection 2017-2020 – Inspirations close to you was the motto for the launch. Egger launches 2017 KBB Collection Europe’s largest manufacturer of woodbased decorative panels and laminates has unveiled its biggest-ever portfolio of decors for the KBB industry. The 2017-2019 UK & Ireland Furniture Manufacturing Collection features 170 predominantly MFC decors, 114 of them with matching laminates available from stock. PerfectSense now comes with edging in 1mm ABS or 1.3mm PMMA, with MFC using 0.8 or 2mm. BA Components reveals its 2017 kitchen trends

Kitchens have always been the heart of the home; but in recent years thay have become a true living space enjoyed by all the family. This shift in lifestyle has generated a burning desire for the latest trends each year from consumers. So what are the hottest kitchen trends for 2017? Furniture & Joinery Production spoke with BA Components director, Kieran McCracken, to find out what the key looks and styles are for 2017 and what is still a big hit in the kitchen industry. Having spent several months of the year globetrotting to find the latest trends to bring to consumers, Kieran tells us to keep an eye out for on-trend finishes such as: industrial look, supermatts, woodgrains and unicolours including the pantone colour of the year; Niagara blue (known as Denim Blue in the KBB industry). “The rise of the supermatts is something we predicted during the year and this is set to rise dramatically in 2017. This finish will be popular amongst various door styles such as the J-profile handle,

flat panel doors and even the traditional Shaker in colours such as white and cashmere, mixing along with strong contrasting colours and woodgrains.” explains Kieran. “With this fabulous supermatt finish comes a strong emphasis not only on look but also now on touch and feel with the added benefit of anti-fingerprint technology. We have showcased this pioneering technology in our Zurfiz supermatts and Pronto Rothwell collections.” On that note, he continues: “Shaker style doors continue to increase in sales throughout 2015/16 as consumers still crave that traditional look. Timeless designs such as the BA Cambridge, Surrey and Tullymore have all been a big hit in 2016. “In 2016, for BA Components the most popular style in membrane pressed doors was the handle-less Knebworth style. To complement this we launched a newer handleless style in June 2016 called the Integra and this unique door allows the handle groove to sit either left or right of the door. “We are now warming to

the great outdoors for kitchen inspiration as the industrial look is top of the pops for 2017. Kieran explains: “There are lots of natural look finishes coming through the market: metals including copper and bronze, both the clean and aged look along with oxide metals. Mirka cleans up with new dust extractors Today, health and safety issues are becoming increasingly important and sanding tools and abrasives are made more and more efficient, with focus on dust-free applications. This development places higher requirements on the dust extractors. The concept, by Manchester-based architect GA Studio, is a 10m long design that incorporates extremely precise angles to mirror the angles of the building itself. “HI-MACS was used as it works very well for granite-like installations,” explains fabricator Kevin Lomax of Lomax Interiors. “The particles run all the way through the HI-MACS, whereas other solid surfaces only have particles in the top millimetre or so.” Sharp, sleek and ultra contemporary, the desk is beautifully in sync with its surroundings, a modern extension to an old grammar school. Designed to emulate the college logo, it leans towards the older part of the building creating a fascinating contrast between old and new. Dynamic and dramatic, it’s both visually appealing and

David Clouting’s new Decofoil stock items

David Clouting starts off 2017 by introducing five new Decofoil stock items – the décors are a mixture of two solid concrete textured vinyls and three woods. Woods, solid colours and natural materials are being used across the different surfaces of kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, and the new vinyl foils enable style to be added to the MDF door. The combination of pressing foil to shaped MDF panels is a key stylistic differential to the flat look of many furniture ranges, and provides greater design options. Natural materials are being replicated in vinyl with new texture developments that progress in quality and authenticity. A K9 Concrete texture has been created by LG Hausys, and has been manufactured in conjunction with a solid colour vinyl to produce an on-trend solid coloured concrete. Two colours have been developed with the K9 Concrete texture – light grey (item reference KADR4-K9) and cashmere (item reference NCAB4-K9). Both colours are highly popular across door décor ranges, and combined with the Concrete texture, will be commercial for consumers to design into their new kitchen, bedroom or bathroom. JJ Smith and Stromab – working together for continued success in the UK market

With UK and Ireland sales in 2016 topping 45 programmable cross-cut saws, it would have been easy for both JJ Smith and Stromab to rest on their laurels and once again congratulate themselves on a record year of sales. However this is not how either company works and their joint goal is always to continue with product development, both hardware and software, along with growing their support infrastructures enabling them to keep pace with the year-on-year increase in sales. To this end, a strategy meeting took place at the Stromab HQ near Modena in December. In attendance were all the team members from both companies enabling a wide-ranging discussion to take place covering these important aspects. JJ Smith managing director Martin Smith picks up the story: “As a company we focus on building and maintaining long term relationships with our suppliers. In order to develop markets and continue growth in sales, we think it is vitally

important to have close working relationships with all our main manufacturers’ partners, not only on sales, but also product support and development. “Such is the importance of our relationship with our lead supplier of automatic crosscuts, Stromab SRL from Italy, I decided that all the members of staff involved with sales and customer support should go to the Stromab factory to discuss various aspects of the cooperation. We were keen to provide feedback on the market in the UK and Ireland and discuss ways in which the products could be continuously improved for 2017 and beyond.” Product manager Kevin McGlone puts the success down to a combination of quality equipment coupled with in-depth product knowledge, back-up support and also keeping an ear to the ground listening to what customers are looking for. He says: “By doing this and working so closely with the manufacturer we are able to offer customers the right solution to suit their particular production requirements.” Stromab MD Rocco Bertesi comments: “ I think that 2016 was a remarkable year for sales of our automatic saws to the UK, and as a result of our recent meeting we will shortly be introducing some new innovations that I am confident will help us maintain and improve our market share, not only in the UK but worldwide.” Currently the Stromab range of programmable cross-cut’s saws comprise the Matrix Base, Matrix Fast and CT600 for straight/angled cutting. In addition both the CT600 and Matrix Base can be supplied in the F version with in built trenching/notching head.

To date there are over 300 machines installed throughout the UK and Ireland in a wide range of different industries including furniture, joinery, packing cases, pallets, garden products, sheds and also plastics. JJ Smith always try to have at least three machines in stock which are available for customer demonstrations/testing and also for quick delivery. The last words must go to some of the many satisfied customers who have purchased Stromab machines. Daniel Ayres from the Bed Base Company, says: “We installed our first Stromab Matrix around 10 years ago and it has never missed a beat. Due to increased workload we have just installed our second machine.” The Green House People installed a Stromab CT600 earlier this year and Greg Killeen comments: “It is a fantastic machine which works all day, every day, giving a very accurate angle and length of cut.” Bayram Timber in Hull has recently installed two new Matrix Base saws to add to it the Matrix F they installed early last year, which was in addition to its existing two Stromab saws. Works manager Geoff Dixon summed up his thoughts: “The fact we keep buying these machines says a lot in itself. They are robustly built, simple to program and most importantly reliable. I had also seen the advert in trade magazines over the years, and the company

always seemed to be getting good write-ups. “We did get another company in to quote, but they could not understand what we wanted to achieve. In a 15 minute conversation with Carl O’Meara of Kündig, he got exactly what we wanted – he understood completely what we needed to do.” Adam said that the machine had basically been sold on the phone, but the company did want to see the machine in action before making a final decision. Murray & Murray were purchasing the machine that was on display at W16 and paid a deposit before the show, on the understanding that if demonstrations at the show did not meet with their approval they would not buy it. “Carl provided veneered boards for us at the show which we sanded – the boards were similar to those which we use, so we could see the quality of the sander without having to carry boards around ourselves. He put one board through the sander and it was sold! You could see the quality straight away from that one compared to what we were achieving in the workshop.” Adam emphasised that the quality that is achieved by the sander is “way beyond expectations.” He continued, “We were running proper jobs straight away, we had so much confidence in it. The first week we put over 1000m of material through the sander. Both Carl and the engineer who installed it said it would be wise to try a couple of test panels first, but we saw the quality when the engineer

installed it and felt test pieces were unnecessary even with lacquers and veneers. I was sanding lacquered panels today: you can sand off a layer of lacquer, it is that accurate, without going into the wood.” The Kündig sander is used across the full range of Murray & Murray products. Adam has seen significant time savings since installing the Kündig sander. “Work that took the boys four to five days to sand by hand, can be done on the machine in four hours, saving us 5,500 hours a year.” And the reduction in hand sanding to just the edges of panels

has improved health and safety, reports Adam, as the “boys on the benches” are not exposed to so much dust. “We are getting the sandpaper for the machine off Carl as well: the quality of the sandpaper he supplies is exceptional and is lasting way beyond what was being achieved on the previous machine.” Adam selected a machine with oblique sanding, and has it permanently set up with the oblique sanding option as “it totally gets rid of the marks”. Where all sanding heads are in line with the direction of travel of the workpiece, tiny flaws that develop over time on the abrasive belts can be transferred to the workpiece. In oblique sanding one head, often the last one, is set at a slight angle to the direction of travel: marks are not transferred to the workpiece, a definite asset when expensive materials are being processed. When asked if he would recommend Kündig, Adam replied: “Certainly, without a doubt. I wouldn’t even hesitate. BFM advises on new HSE regime As the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) tightens up on the woodworking sector, which includes furniture making, Alistair Bromhead, the BFM’s expert on health and safety and the environment, explains what it means for companies within the industry, Since October 2012, under the Fee for Intervention (FFI) regime, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) can charge sites where they identify a material breach – essentially when a breach of health and safety law has occurred which is serious enough to warrant a written requirement for improvement, an improvement notice or prohibition notice. When this occurs, the HSE can charge for their time at a rate of £129 per hour. Following the revision in February 2016, the penalties facing an organisation have greatly increased if a prosecution is undertaken by the HSE. Fines are now linked to a range of factors including the company size and there has been

a significant rise in the number of prison sentences for responsible managers and directors, as well as enforcement notices issued within the woodworking sector each year. For companies, the result is an increased likelihood of receiving improvement notices if any health and safety executive visit occurs. Before the regime, visits would more often result in verbal or written suggestions, with enforcement notices only in more serious cases. The furniture sector, under the classification of woodworking, has the third worst health and safety record among industries, with only waste, recycling and mines and quarries having a worse record. As a result – as it is certain that the HSE will continue with its focus and FFI visits in the coming years – the BFM has created a step by step guide to ensure that companies are up to date with all legal requirements. Suggestions for those that process wood and board: • Make sure your local exhaust ventilation system has been tested

within the past 14 months and that the report has been understood and acted upon. • Ensure that a risk assessment is in place for wood dust. Personal exposure monitoring for wood dust will greatly help. • Remove brushes and blowingdown air hoses. Ensure that dusty material is removed by vacuuming. • Ensure that you have at least undertaken the HSE asthma questionnaire for those who work with wood. Even better would be lung function testing/spirometry where there is a risk of asthma from

your type of timber. Under FFI, the BFM has helped more than 100 companies to satisfy the requirements of the HSE and is regularly conducting on-site work to help organistions fulfill the requirements of improvement notices. The chill winds of Winter are now upon us, making on-site decoration of newly installed timber joinery and cladding items, at best, an uncertain process.

wet air where necessary. This ensures effective curing at each stage is achieved within a typical 4-6-hour period. After the coating stage is complete that the final assembly and glazing of the timber joinery item begins, with handles, locks, hinges and glass units being fixed to a fully coated and sealed all around surface. It’s a situation that global coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel Wood Coatings, with its UK headquarters in Blackburn, are very familiar with, and is one key factor that determines their stance of strongly endorsing the fully factory finished concept in conjunction with their extensive range of timber joinery and cladding coatings. Fully factory finished timber joinery and cladding ensures that the primer, base stains, mid and topcoats are applied under climate controlled factory conditions, no matter how challenging the weather is outside. The 70’s and 80’s produced some feel-good news stories such as flares, punk rock and some very wild haircuts but also heralded some bad-news stories when considering build, installation and decoration practices vis a vie on-site timber joinery. Regrettably, it became the norm to see base stained or primed only timber joinery delivered to sites and stored very badly, often unwrapped and in fully exposed ground contact situations. These were then installed and built around leaving them unprotected in adverse weather conditions for long periods. Only when the exterior build was mostly complete would the onsite decorator have a chance to begin, often having to cope with the added problems of already saturated timber, mortar, render or general building debris and damages and an impending dropped scaffold deadline. It was inevitable that it became a practical necessity to cut corners. It’s a situation that’s happily improved...a little like wearing those flares, but sadly not to the point where it’s under control by any means...a little like the haircuts!

By only using on-site coatings to bare or primed only timber joinery the project manager is opening-up a myriad of possible wounds that can haemorrhage a host of unnecessary problems. AkzoNobel know that fully factory finished timber joinery products have a better performance expectation and a greater resistance to the challenges of a modern building site based on a modular ready to fit concept than similarly produced bare or primed only timber joinery items. This level of certainty is gained not only from the ‘uncertainty’ of on- site decoration but also from the advantages of using dedicated coatings, applied under factory controlled conditions to joinery items prior to assembly, glazing and fitting. Consider a glazed and assembled timber window or door and the amount of areas where on site coating is simply not possible once installed. There are many vulnerable points subject to potential moisture ingress that are reliant, at best, on a primer coat for protection. At AkzoNobel, the factory coating systems are designed with the user in mind and they liaise with timber joinery manufacturers to produce a full coating specification to suit production processes and equipment. A typical specification begins with the application of base stains or primers containing impregnation through a ‘Dip or Deluge’ process allowing sufficient product to be absorbed into the timber, especially through end grains with all surfaces easily accessed prior to assembly. After drying, the coating process continues with specialised sealers designed to offer added protection to vulnerable areas such as joints and end grains and is usually completed with the application of one or two topcoats, sprayed at considerably higher film builds that wouldn’t be possible with using brush or roller application. Full drying is carried out at each relevant point of the operation, often using climate control systems which can control the movement, temperature and humidity of warm, dry air, even recycling cold

Commitment to best practice leads to purchase of wood waste heater A leading engineering company in the Northwest has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology (WWT) to save money on heating and waste disposal bills. Graham Engineering provides innovative and advanced engineering solutions to clients across a broad spectrum of sectors including nuclear, aerospace, medical and security industries from its 300,000ft2 site in Nelson, Lancashire. BFM introduces more legal advice lines to members The British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) has expanded its legal advice service to members. The trade association, which offers a range of benefits to members, has expanded the commercial aspect of its legal advice line service run in conjuction with advice specialist, Croner Consulting. BFM members now have access to a team of vastly experienced commercial consultants who are are able to advise on a broad range of topics. These include company law, clubs and associations, partnerships, LLPs and sole

traders, commercial contracts, insolvency, tort law, property and intellectual property as well as data protections, freedom of information and The Equality Act. Croner also provides a back-up health and safety and employment law advice line if members are unable to contact the BFM’s own experts in this area. Says Jackie Bazeley, BFM MD: “The commercial legal sector is one of the most popular areas for advice requested by our members. The BFM is continutally reviewing and improving the benefits and services offered to its members and this extension of advice available reflects this.”

BFM advises on new HSE regime As the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) tightens up on the woodworking sector, which includes furniture making, Alistair Bromhead, the BFM’s expert on health and safety and the environment, explains what it means for companies within the industry, Since October 2012, under the Fee for Intervention (FFI) regime, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) can charge sites where they identify a material breach – essentially when a breach of health and safety law has occurred which is serious enough to warrant a written requirement for improvement, an improvement notice or prohibition notice. When this occurs, the HSE can charge for their time at a rate of £129 per hour. Following the revision in February 2016, the penalties facing an organisation have greatly increased if a prosecution is undertaken by the HSE. Fines are now linked to a range of factors including the company size and there has been a significant rise in the number of prison sentences for responsible managers and directors, as well as enforcement notices issued within the woodworking sector each year. For companies, the result is an increased likelihood of receiving improvement notices

if any health and safety executive visit occurs. Before the regime, visits would more often result in verbal or written suggestions, with enforcement notices only in more serious cases. The furniture sector, under the classification of woodworking, has the third worst health and safety record among industries, with only waste, recycling and mines and quarries having a worse record. As a result – as it is certain that the HSE will continue with its focus and FFI visits in the coming years – the BFM has created a step by step guide to ensure that companies are up to date with all legal requirements.
