Well, that was the show that was! W16 was by universal consent an outstanding success, with many visitors telling me and my team on our stand what a positive experience they felt the show was. The organiser, it has to be said, played a blinder! A well-designed show with good balance and a range of interest points that bode well for the next iteration in 2018. Elsewhere, during a brief trip to Pesaro to catch up with Biesse at its regular At Home event, I spoke with Mr Broccoli about the long term and hard won growth that the Italian manufacturer has been enjoying in recent months. The upbeat attitude was also reflected on the company’s impressive stand at W16 where business was brisk throughout the four days of the show.

Also in October, I took the opportuninty to revisit Ney in Coventry during its At Home event, where, following a hearty breakfast, I was shown around the company’s upgraded showroom facilities, which highlighted the news that Ney has become a national distributor for Hettich, covering mainland UK and Northern Ireland – a really positive addition to Ney’s components and fittings offer. What also impressed me was the breadth of the company’s edgebander tech – a really wide range of kit from manual hand edgebanders all the way through to high performance laser options. If you’re in the market for edgebanding technology, whatever the size, Ney has a range of solutions which are well worth investigating. Speaking of edgebanding, this issue comes complete with our popular annual Edgebanding Supplement, full of innovative products, technical articles and insight – I hope you enjoy both issues.

Ellis Furniture celebrates 125th anniversary

Ellis Furniture has been in business for an impressive 125 years Ellis Furniture, one of the UK’s leading privately owned, family business furniture manufacturers, has begun its celebrations marking its 125-year anniversary with a charity fundraiser, raising over £22,000 for a number of local and national charities. Ellis Furniture began its life in 1891, and was the brain child of J T Ellis, manufacturing a diverse range of high quality furniture items such as fireplace surrounds, aeroplane components and television cabinets. It has gone from strength to strength and is now run by two of the fourth generation Ellis cousins, Richard Ellis and Tom Ellis, manufacturing a range of kitchens, bathrooms and contract furniture. As part of its celebrations, Richard and Tom Ellis embarked on a 125-mile bike ride alongside 10 colleagues, starting in Oundle, Peterbrough, where both cousins attended school, back to the

factory in Huddersfield. “We have a proud history of supporting both local and national charities, and feel very strongly that although we have grown into a national brand, we still retain the family business ethos to which my grandfather would have been proud of,” says MD Richard Ellis. “We wanted to mark our historic milestone and celebrate our achievements within manufacturing, by cycling a mile for every year we have been trading, raising money for brilliant causes along the way.” Collectively the 12 cyclists raised £11,000 which was doubled by the company to £22,000. The charities supported included £14,400 for the MS Society, £3500 for Mencap, and the remainder to the Jerry Green Dog Rescue, Kirkwood Hospice, and Cancer Research. ellisfurniture.co.uk

PWS Worksurfaces achieves Lapitec accreditation

Left to right: Joe Petroczy – PWS, Chris Kelsey – The Marble and Granite Centre, UK agent for Lapitec, Michael Catmull – PWS, Dan Holden, PWS PWS Worksurfaces has added another accreditation to its line-up of credentials, with the recent award of Lapitec-approved fabricator status. A team of four, from the PWS’ production, technical and sales departments, was invited to Lapitec HQ in Italy for in-depth training on the material, including its technical properties, CNC machining recommendations and range content. Extensive testing subsequently took place at PWS’ factory, with specialist features created, prior to the Lapitec-approved status being awarded. Comments Michael Catmull, PWS Worksurfaces’ process improvement manager: “We are honoured to be endorsed as a Lapitec approved fabricator and are very excited about the opportunities this status will offer the business. The stringent process ensured that our manufacturing capabilities perfectly match Lapitec’s high standards and they have total confidence in us. “With the recent £250k investment in our water-jet

FP277.3.indd 6

machine we are now extremely well placed to move our expertise in ultra-compact materials forward.” Lapitec is the original ultra-compact material and, unlike other brands, it is homogenous. Offering the resilience of porcelain and a guaranteed colour match, Lapitec ‘s composition is 100% mineral with no resin or hydrocarbon-based binder components. This delivers high resistance to UV light, acids, abrasion and everyday wear and tear, as well as being inert and tolerant to very high temperatures and frost. Its high durability, coupled with its extremely low porosity, makes Lapitec the perfect material for both commercial and domestic applications. The 15-strong Lapitec palette is predominantly neutral in colour and is available in seven finishes from polished through to more textured options, so is well suited to both classic and contemporary interiors. pwsworksurfaces.co.uk

Heico achieves FIRA Gold Award Heico Fasteners UK has been awarded the coveted Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) Gold Award for its new Blacquer rust-resistant Super Loop springs. FIRA Gold Product Certification is a quality mark operated by FIRA International and backed by the Furniture Industry Research Association, and is the only certification scheme recognised by the furniture industry and audited by an independent third party. Now, hot on the heels of its recent Gold Award for its Blacquer ZigZag Springs, Heico Fasteners UK has followed it up with another Gold award from the industry body. Heico’s Blacquer Zig-Zag and Super Loop springs have been developed to meet the exacting demands of the UK furniture industry and the unique anti-rust coating provides unrivalled corrosion resistance. The unique coating of the Blacquer springs is fully elastic, meaning it will not crack with movement, thus no reduction in corrosion protection even under the strain of continuous use. The lack of rust coupled with no oily residue makes the springs far cleaner to use in production than existing alternatives, adding real benefits to manufacturers. heico-fasteners.co.uk

Ney’s partnership with Hettich

InnoTech Atira drawer

Multitech-drawers Ney has announced a new partnership with leading German manufacturer Hettich, a fresh addition to the ever-evolving component range. This partnership sees Ney becoming the national distributor for Hettich covering mainland UK and Northern Ireland. Ney will be stocking a core product range of the Sensys hinges, the Atira drawer boxes, Quadro under-mount slides and MultiTech metal sided drawers, both in Coventry and Lisburn. Ney’s Gerd Ney explains: “Hettich has a reputation for quality with an excellent range of products that is innovative, reliable and easy to use. Typically these areas are very important to manufacturers, although the cost is slightly higher, they have the peace of mind that there will be no quality issues in the future. “When there are problems after delivery this is much more costly to the producer and using a manufacturer that can deliver this type of quality assurance is vital. Therefore we are very pleased that we now offer the core products that have helped build this reputation. Hettich put it best and they are right when they say that it is definitely German quality you can trust.” 024 7630 8100 ney.co.uk

GA Imports increases offering

GA Imports has continued to cement its position in the UK market as one of the largest stockists of laminated panels in the UK, with the introduction of Radiata Clear Pine Panels, and Linden Hardwood Panels. “We continue to introduce new laminated panel species to our range, and intend to continue to respond to the changing demand in what is a very specialized area of the Joinery Market,” says Guy Atherton, MD of GA Imports.

FP277.3.indd 10

“The Radiata and Linden panels give us both softwood, and hardwood knot-free panels, for which demand has been growing. These panels give customers an ideal solution when producing high quality painted finishes. “For many of our competitors, laminated materials are just a small part of their stock offering, for us it is our speciality for 20 years. We are totally focussed on supplying a wide range of high quality laminated panels. To achieve this we have

developed long term partnerships with selected suppliers, so we can guarantee consistency, quality and reliability.” Most of GA Imports suppliers have been involved with them for many years. “When we find a good supplier, we stick with them. This develops strong partnerships that help us though the tough times”, says Geoff Rutter, UK sales manager. “It is through these partnerships with top quality suppliers, that we

are able to offer consistently high standard of panel.” All of the Redwood Pine Laminated Panels, and many of the other products are PEFC or FSC-certificated which guarantees the wood products have come from sustainable sources. G A Imports is now branding its laminated products Proboard, which it hopes in time will establish a brand that will be synonymous with quality. gaimports.co.uk

Finishing fast with Speed and Quantum from AkzoNobel Delivering a speedy project completion together with ensuring that quality is at the forefront of what you do in any market isn’t that easy. When an opportunity came along for Marineware who are an AkzoNobel Distributor, to run some product evaluations with one of the leading interiors companies in the UK the chance was too good to miss. It would be an opportunity for AzkoNobel’s Speed and Quantum to really shine. In the initial trials, the company used Quantum IS160 – a 2K PU Acrylic Isolating Sealer, together with evaluating Quantum Q-T260-30 – a 2K PU Acrylic Clear Semi-Gloss Topcoat. The evaluation also tested Quantum Color QC-IP350 Isolating Primer, Speed SP-S191 Clear Sealer and Speed SP-T290-90 High-Gloss Topcoat. During the tests the coatings were applied on various selections of wood and on all samples the products gave a super-fast build with excellent clarity. The gloss levels proved to be simply outstanding.

Homag UK is door manufacturers’ first choice for CNC processors A significant challenge facing manufacturers of timber and alu-clad doors and windows is the move towards smaller batch sizes and greater variety of products. Forward-thinking producers are therefore looking for solutions that enable them to handle these smaller runs without having to interrupt the main production process.

Homag BMB 800 series

With over a century’s experience of timber door and window manufacturing, Glasgow based Russell Timber Technology was confronted with this very situation. “The foundations of the business were built around our insulated hardwood timber door sets which established the benchmark for timber door engineering in the UK,” explains John Russell, managing director for Russell Timber Technology. “In 1999 we expanded into timber and alu-clad windows and façades. This created a comprehensive product portfolio offering total supply and install solutions for large or small scale new build, refurbishment or regeneration schemes and city dwellings, eco-builds, and private and public housing projects. “Over the last few years, however, the demand for a wider variety of doors and windows in small batch sizes has meant we have had to re-think our methodology. This led us to look for a CNC solution that would give us the ability to slot in small batches of doors and windows without interrupting the main production workflow. “Choosing the right partner for us was critical. We had never bought any Homag machinery before but, after researching the market for a suitable solution, it was clear that the Homag BMB 812 offered the best all-round package. “We needed a machine that would improve the quality of our production across a broad mix of products and which used software that was compatible with our existing systems and future requirements. It was also important to us to have a reliable UK support network on hand so that any issues could be sorted out quickly and cost effectively. “As part of the purchasing process, Homag UK invited us out to Germany to see the facilities and discuss our requirements. We also took the opportunity to visit two UK sites that were already running the Homag BMB 812. This process was invaluable in working through the specification of

FP277.3.indd 14

our machine and Homag were happy to involve the tool manufacturer in the conversations as well. “With the machine installed we now have so much more flexibility and can respond to individuals needs as required. The Homag BMB 812 enables us to offer a better, higher quality service to our customers and that is crucial to the long-term future of our business.” David Smith St Ives supplies and manufactures engineered timber products and associated fittings through four product divisions – commercial projects, public sector projects, residential developers and self-build homes. Its range of timber solutions includes roof trusses, joists and staircases alongside its door and door sets product. Over the years, the company has established its own unique production process at its 165,000ft² manufacturing facility in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. “The way we manufacture door frame sets is slightly different to the rest of the trade,” explains Simon Wadsworth, a director at David Smith. “We machine multiple frame pieces at the same time and so we were looking for a machine that could do that and process the doors themselves. “It was a very important investment decision for the business and so it wasn’t something we were about to rush. It’s not the type of machine you change very often, hence you’ve got to get the decision right first time, because it’s going to be a cornerstone machine in the factory for the next ten years. “Given the importance of the choice, we were prepared to invest six months in evaluating the options in the marketplace. It warranted the effort to find out what was out there and our initial research focused on six machines of which three, it turned out, fitted the bill.” “Our final decision rested with the 5-axis Homag BMG 512 because it offered us the best long-term prospects for David Smith. As well as

it being technically a good solution, we were able to specify it with the ‘speed pack,’ the twin tables and the 72 place tool changer plus a 73rd place for the large circular saw. “We were particularly impressed with the ‘speed pack’ which features a laser scanner that sits underneath the machine and detects if anybody or anything gets too close to it whilst in operation. In layman’s terms, it allows the machine to work faster if there’s nobody about. So, if the operator is loading one of the machine tables whilst the head is working on the other table, the operator can work comfortably without any safety fears whatsoever. “The laser will sense he is there and slow the machine down to a ‘safer’ speed. Unlike other systems, however, it does not rely upon the operator to reset anything before it goes back up to full operating speed – this happens automatically when the scanner senses the operator is out of the way. “Most other systems rely on the operator to press a button to reset the machine before it will continue at full speed. That can be very time consuming – the ‘speed pack’ eliminates this and maximises productivity without compromising safety. “The 72 place tool changer is another timesaver – it means we don’t lose productivity changing tools. All the tools we need for door and frame sets processing are loaded in the tool changer permanently. The operator can therefore process doors and frame sets without having to compromise production changing tools around. “The Homag BMG is also faster because we can load more components on the tables at once – consequently, the machine hasn’t got to change tools as many times. This makes the whole process significantly faster, particularly if we’re using eight or nine tools in one program.” “From specifying the machine, to installation and training we have worked closely with Homag’s sales and technical product specialist

Unusual doors are easily produced on the Homag BMG 512

to ensure that we ended up with a solution to meet our precise and unique requirements. “There are so many options on the BMG 512 that it was vitally important we liaised diligently with Homag’s team – after all, they are the ones with complete and extensive knowledge of all the options available. This cooperation enabled us to specify a machine that would do everything we wanted, in a format that would fit in with our production processes. “Since its introduction into our facility, it has pretty much done exactly what we expected because both Homag and our team put the effort in at the front end. It’s interesting working with Homag. They don’t just cross their fingers and say, “Yes, our machine will do that for you.” They want to understand why you want to do something. “Once they understand why you want to do it, they ask questions to make sure that it is the right way to do it – it’s the German way. Some manufacturers, on the other hand, will say “Yes” to everything and just hope that it can be achieved later – the Germans make sure it can be achieved before committing to delivering it.” “The Homag BMG 512 is crucial to our business and so it is vitally important to us to keep it running with minimal downtime. I’m a great believer that if you don’t maintain a machine, then don’t be surprised if it breaks when you can least afford it. “Ongoing maintenance is therefore essential and the best organisation to maintain it is the manufacturer. For this reason we took out a five year maintenance contract with Homag UK – this gives us the peace of mind that our 5-axis BMG 512 will run consistently, improving our productivity and flexibility day in, day out.” 01332 856424 homag-uk.co.uk

Wood Waste Technology heater installed in state-of-the-art joinery premises Wood Waste Technology has recently installed a new wood waste heater into a high quality joinery company in West Molesey, London that manufactures and installs bespoke windows and doors. Wood Waste Technology directors Ben Stanbrook and Simon Nicholson started a business partnership many years ago providing bespoke joinery and carpentry services together after they met whilst studying joinery at school. Working originally from a small workshop on a farm in Surrey, the business continued to grow and became a limited company names Stanbrook & Nicholson in 2006. Celebrating its 10th year of trading this year, the business recently relocated to a larger purpose-built, state-of-the-art factory, in order to upscale operations and meet increased demand. The directors knew they wanted to install a wood waste heater into the new factory, enhancing the company’s environmental policy by using waste wood and sawdust to heat the building, whilst also helping to reduce the company’s operating expenses. Director of Stanbrook and Nicholson, Ben Stanbrook says: “We were recommended to speak to Wood Waste Technology by one of our suppliers, as the company has an excellent reputation for providing durable, reliable and easy-to-use biomass heaters. “As our previous premises were on a farm, all our sawdust waste would be used by the farmer as bedding for his animals, meaning we didn’t have to dispose of it. Once we’d moved off the farm however, we needed to find another solution. “We knew a wood waste heater would allow us to recycle our waste wood and turn it into energy, to provide heating for the factory to keep our 30 staff warm. It works perfectly, as when it was cold earlier this year the temperature in the factory stayed lovely and warm.” After speaking with Wood Waste Technology, Stanbrook & Nicholson purchased a WT15 wood waste heater, which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers into the 20,000ft² premises. Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies

FP277.3.indd 16

Wood Waste Technology WT15 reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. The company manufactures and installs a full range of wood waste boilers and heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of

wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. Kinkelder sharpens circular saws with Vollmer Dutch company Kinkelder has made a name for itself on the global arena with its carbide-tipped circular saw blades, high-speed steel circular saw blades and segmental circular saw blades. For producing and re-sharpening saw blades, Kinkelder has a fleet of more than 20 sharpening machines from Vollmer.

Dutch company Kinkelder has a fleet of over 20 Vollmer machines Among Kinkelder’s most recent acquisitions are the Vollmer CHD, CHF and CM sharpening machines. “We run our own research department and do everything possible to perfect our circular saws, starting with choosing the basic body and tipping the teeth, right through to the rotation of the blade. Even now we manufacture one hundred thousand saw blades a year, 90% of which are sold abroad,” says Erwin Hissink, MD of the Kinkelder Group. The family-run company founded by Pieter de Kinkelder in 1945 now has over 350 employees working at 14 subsidiaries in eight countries to generate an annual turnover of over €50million. With such figures, Kinkelder is one of the largest saw manufacturers in the world with manufacturing sites in Germany, the USA and the Czech Republic. “By working closely alongside our customers, we are able to analyse sawing processes and implement the ideal conditions for the process, such as material and machine requirements. This puts us in a position where we can lower our customers’ production costs and improve production itself,” adds Erwin.

Most of Kinkelder’s customers cut steel or iron and are primarily involved in the automotive and oil and gas industries. The company’s in-house development department is constantly researching new sawing technology and collaborating with international institutes and universities. Kinkelder is always on the lookout for the best partners from across the world to develop its circular saw blades – at both the research and the production stages. This is why, over 30 years ago, Kinkelder turned to the technology manufactured by Swabian sharpening specialists Vollmer. Today, the Dutch company has a fleet of more than 20 Vollmer sharpening machines. These include the latest CHD, CHF and CM models that allow carbide-tipped circular saw blades to be sharpened with precision. Additionally, the Vollmer machines enable the saws to be finish

machined in a single process without the blades having to be clamped in more than one position. Thanks to its eight CNC-controlled axes, the CHD sharpening machine can machine a variety of circular saw blades by processing both the face and top of the teeth. The entire grinding unit is robustly mounted on a central main structure and takes up very little space. This monobloc design enables the sharpening process to run extremely smoothly, allowing Kinkelder to achieve exceptionally high precision. The CHF sharpening machine has seven CNC-controlled axes and measuring equipment for peripheral grinding on both sides. Kinkelder utilises these machines around the clock in combination with an ND handling system and appropriate loading carriage for automatic tipping. kinkelder.com vollmer-group.com

W16 and Elements review With increased visitor numbers, over 50% of visitors already committed to returning in 2018 and exhibitor re-booking figures exceeding 80%, this year’s woodworking machinery and materials exhibition, W16 and Elements, has been hailed almost universally as a huge success. More than 200 of the industry’s most influential names exhibited at the long-standing manufacturing exhibition, which took place alongside the brand new furniture components show, Elements. Spanning over 11,000m2 – a 15% increase on W14 – the exhibition was a hive of activity from when the doors opened on Sunday, with product launches, live demonstrations and new, interactive zones adding to the show’s interest, until it closed on the Wednesday. The organiser’s new format saw the very first Elements of Innovation Awards taking place live at the show and a unique, four-day competition that bore witness to four woodworking apprentices putting their skills to the test and compete for the coveted ‘W Challenge’ title and £500-worth of Felder vouchers. This, alongside an interactive Skills of Excellence Zone and the addition of the UK’s only dedicated furniture components show, Elements, has set the bar high for future W shows. Lisa Campagnola, W16 event director, adds: “W16 and Elements were a complete success, with many exhibitors expressing their delight with the new show format and citing the show as their best to date, thanks to a high level of quality leads and generous footfall. The show was well attended by industry professionals and feedback on the new visitor attractions was really positive. For us, it’s these opinions from exhibitors and visitors that really count. They hold the key to the show’s success and offer the best insight we could ask for. Now it’s time to look ahead to W18 and continue to be a driving force behind the UK’s furniture manufacturing industry.” W18 will take place from the 30th September – 3rd October 2018 at the NEC Birmingham. wexhibition.co.uk

Movac – helping you to unleash your colour W16 has been a big success for Movac this year and the company was excited to show off some of its innovative premium quality finishes. Hundreds of people visited the stand with some stating “their kitchen units looked amazing” and “Movac stood out from the rest”. This year Movac’s theme was to encourage people to ‘enter our world’ and enjoy the coatings shown on a wide range of surfaces and materials. The stand comprised of a garden setting with samples of outdoor coatings on benches, window frames, structural timber and even flower pots to show that Movac is capable of providing high quality coatings whatever the requirement. There was also a home setting with indoor finishes on a kitchen, glass splashback and wooden worktop, lounge furniture, retail display units, picture frames, mirrors and tables to name but a few. Movac built on the success of previous years, where it had a fashion catwalk of colour and was determined to make its stand even better than at W14. Movac has eight strategically-placed branches nationwide, all with manufacturing capabilities providing a daily delivery service, making it one of the largest independent UK distributors of paint and consumables to the wood and industrial markets. The show was also a good opportunity to show the strong partnership between Movac and its supplier of high technology wood finish coatings Sayerlack. They débuted many of their new coatings at the stand including; Sayerlack Water Based MDF Isolating Primer, Sayerlack Water Based Coffee Proof Coating, Sayerlack Matt Black Scratch-Proof Polyurethane Coating, Sayerlack High Gloss Fire Retardant Coating, Sayerlack Fast Cure High Gloss Acrylic Lacquer, Sayerlack 3D Magnetic Storm Coating and Sayerlack Chrome Mirror Effect Coating. “We hope that visitors enjoyed the W16 show as much as we enjoyed exhibiting there,” says MD, Mark Smith of Movac. “It was a fantastic event that allowed us to showcase some of our amazing paints and lacquers, by displaying them on many items in vibrant eye-catching colours. We wanted to inspire people to embrace and unleash your colour.” For those that missed the show, Movac can send one of their sales executives to visit, or they can visit the company’s website. movac.com

Daltons Wadkin report positive W16 In a post-Brexit business climate Daltons Wadkin was surprised and delighted by the positive nature and sheer number of enquiries received at the show for its range of high profile and high tech equipment.

“A good solid show with an enquiry level we have not seen for several years”, reports MD Francis Dalton. “The secret as far as we are concerned was the variety of market leading brands which we were able to display and demonstrate on two large stands. “Five different major lines were demonstrated by our technicians throughout the show focusing on leading technology designed to influence production performance and capacity at every level.” Leading the way were the by now well established Salvador crosscutting systems involving machines for both straight and angle cutting with automatic programmable cutting and optimisation. W16 was an opportunity to re-emphasise the company’s position as sole UK and Ireland distributor for these highly successful Salvador products which are proving popular with joinery and furniture manufacturers, timber importers and merchants and the timber frame industry. Cehisa edge banders are a new departure for Daltons Wadkin but three models were demonstrated including the Flexy, the PRO12 and the new Compact laser edge machine. Technicians from Cehisa were present throughout and the machines were continually a centre of interest and activity. A Kuper XL6 6-head planing and moulding machine was featured and demonstrated and this also created great interest with its advanced pre-set

FP277.3.indd 24

controls and automatic cutterhead and pressure adjustments which enable the operator to set up a job by simply using a touchscreen. Prospective customers well used to the earlier more traditional type of moulding machine were impressed not only by the control system but also the smooth and remarkably quiet performance. As usual, a range of Elcon vertical panel saws were displayed, including the unique deep cutting Titan and a large capacity automatic machine with the Elcon Advance clamping system which is designed to ease operation of the machine from a materials handling point of view and provide greater accuracy. A Kimla BPF1525 CNC router seemed to have a crowd around it throughout the show and provided a focus of attention for onlookers and prospective customers alike. A CML multi-rip saw, Stenner ST100R resaw and Altendorf sliding table panel saws were amongst other machines on display and a number of orders were taken on the stand. Daltons Wadkin Sales Director Andy Walsh was delighted with the show: “It was the best show for a decade. We have fantastic leads and the exposure of our brilliant range of products to such a wide audience was as good as it gets.” T 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

Biesse experiences best W show to date Biesse’s stand at W16 reflected W16’s emphasis on SMART working (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timed).

The challenges Biesse customers are faced with, such as the minimum working wage, general cost of labour, cost of real estate and materials, means that the company has to innovate on their behalf to help them achieve their business objectives. Biesse has to make its machines smarter in order to produce more for less cost. W16 was Biesse UK’s most successful W show to date, with 46% more space than W14 and exhibiting production line operations with nesting and edgebanding cells, demonstrating that SMART working is available and economically viable to the SME sector as well as larger woodworking manufacturers. A total of 19 machines was on show over the three Biesse stands, including a selection of cost-effective, smaller edgebanders, panel saws, sanders and CNC machining centres, purely aimed at the smaller manufacturers, who may only just be starting out in the automated manufacturing arena. With more than £15m of sales and opportunities, over 1000 visitors to the stand with their resultant enquiries, the future’s looking good. biesse.com/uk

Francis Dalton celebrates 60 years in the industry Francis Dalton, director of woodworking machinery supplier, Daltons Wadkin, is celebrating 60 years in the woodworking industry. To mark this impressive milestone, Francis was presented with a celebratory cake at this year’s machinery and materials exhibition, W16. Founded in 1901, Francis is the third generation to run Daltons Wadkin and his experience in the sector has seen his company grow and evolve to become the international player that is known and respected today. The company’s extensive portfolio includes 18 machinery brands including Salvador, Elcon, Altendorf, Stenner, Sedgwick, Kimla and its very own in-house range, Wadkin. The company has

also recently acquired exclusivity of Spanish CNC brand, Cehisa, in the UK. On receiving the cake Francis says: “It was a great surprise. The Dalton name has been in the industry for over 100 years and it is fantastic to be recognised for the hard work and investment both myself and the team have put in.” Lisa Campagnola, events director adds:

“It’s important for us to recognise a huge achievement such as this. This year, W16 has focused heavily on promoting the importance of apprenticeships and recruitment in the woodworking sector. Thanks to people like Francis paving the way, the future has never looked brighter for the woodworking industry.” daltonswadkin.com

Everything Clic’d into place at W16 Everything ‘clic’d into place’ for the BA Clic Components ClicBox team at this year’s W16 Elements Show. Held at the NEC in Birmingham, this was the first showing for ClicBox and has been hailed a huge success. Showcasing the ClicBox carcass to stand visitors, the team demonstrated this pioneering product range to many who were keen to find out more about this product and how it could benefit their business. ClicBox is the fastest way to build a kitchen in today’s industry and to prove this the ClicBox team ran a competition amongst stand visitors to see who could construct the carcass in the quickest time. The fact that you don’t need tools, glues or screws to assemble the ClicBox carcass makes it so easy and quick to build. The feedback on the stand was very positive as visitors got to see first hand just how easy this innovative product could be implemented into their businesses. The stand was such a success and interest was so high in the product that the team ran out of brochures and had to order a re-print to see them through the show! 01709 545277 baclicbox.com

Titan automates HOMAG City at W16 W16 was by far the most innovative UK woodworking show to date. The NEC was alive with automation and HOMAG City in hall 7 led the way, exhibiting its latest range of technology for both small and large manufacturers. “Once again, it was a phenomenal show for HOMAG UK,” comments Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for HOMAG. “Interest grew each day and by the end of the show we had smashed our ambitious sales target by over 30% – a truly remarkable achievement. “The woodworking industry is certainly embracing automation as manufacturers look to make production processes quicker and more efficient to enable them to compete in what is increasingly becoming a global market.” Innovation success for HOMAG Recognising the latest innovations at the NEC, W16 saw HOMAG highly commended for its new entry level, WEEKE five-axis Venture BMG 115 compact CNC machine in the show’s Elements of Innovation Awards. The WEEKE Venture was recognised firstly for its innovative design. This allows the operator to access the machine from all sides, making it more productive and flexible. Its new safety technology was the other stand-out feature. This automatically stops the machine if someone or something gets too close to the gantry whilst the machine is in action. Additional benefits include its compact design and high level features, making the WEEKE BMG 115 a profitable investment for entry level manufacturers that require five-axis machining capability. Titan thrilled crowds at HOMAG City With automation being a key theme, HOMAG UK’s special guest, Titan, certainly stole the show. Providing visitors with guided tours of HOMAG City several times a day, he amazed the crowds and kept them entertained throughout the three-day event.

His interactive tour showcased all the highlights of HOMAG City, with Titan providing explanations of the key technology on show. Perfect edges with HOMAG at W16 HOMAG UK displayed its latest edgebanding technology, including the most recent offerings from its popular BRANDT and HOMAG ranges. Both demonstrated several models from their ranges which started from entrylevel machines for the smaller manufacturer through to large machines for industrial plants. Visitors to HOMAG City were impressed by the quality of the samples being produced by the BRANDT Ambition 1230 FC airTec model. The costeffective machine brings high quality, glueless edgbanding within the reach of the smaller manufacturer. Needless to say, a number of these impressive models were sold at the show. Making its début at W16, the BRANDT 1440 FC Edition made a bold statement. The powerful, yet compact edgebander allows instant changeover between different edgeband sizes on panels up to 60m/m thick. Already proving to be popular, the 1440 FC was a hit at W16 with the crowds. Furniture manufacturers visiting W16 also discovered the impressive features of the HOMAG Ambition 2474 airTec edgebander with its energysaving and environmentally-friendly benefits. Designed especially for the demands of industrial level manufacturing, this high speed powerhouse can reach feed speeds of up to 25m/m. Available with either airTec’s zero-joint technology for invisible joints or PUR adhesive for ultimate edge quality, the 2474 offers enormous production flexibility.

Perfect packaging on demand with the HOMAG Automation VKS 250 Continuing with the theme of automation, HOMAG UK showcased the VKS 250 box packaging machine with 3D scanning technology and gluing station. HOMAG Automation’s range of packing technology is renowned for optimally packaging fragile and top-quality products so they arrive in perfect condition. Visitors to W16 were impressed to see the innovative VKS 250 bespoke box-making cell in action. Using its 3D scanner, the VKS 250 measures the dimensions of the items which need to be packaged. The scanner automatically sends the dimensions to the VKS 250 which then cuts the box to the required size from two-fold cardboard and feeds it to the operator. The operator is then able to assemble the box, position the product inside it and place it into the gluing machine which seals the box. With just-in-time production, manufacturing and stock-keeping costs can be reduced up to an impressive 30% per year. HOMAG Automation also presented its compact and easy-to-use MPH 410 electric carcass clamp. With adjustable pressing pressure, two pressing speeds and a timer to set the required pressing time, it is a reliable clamp. The MPH 410 is just one of many solutions from the product assembly range for flexible production. ›››

HOMAG cares – raising money for Rainbows HOMAG UK continued to support its charity of the year, Rainbows, by raising money in various ways at the show. Using the demonstration machines, the company generated money for the children’s hospice by creating wooden items such as footballs, clocks and coat hooks in various designs which were then purchased by visitors during the exhibition. HOMAG UK also donated £1 to Rainbows each time someone visited HOMAG City and swapped their W16 lanyard for a HOMAG UK lanyard. On top of all this, HOMAG UK made the pledge to match any money raised, generating a brilliant total of £3500. W16 – bigger and better than ever before Simon Brooks concludes: “Overall, W16 was a fantastic show for us and everyone at HOMAG UK would like to thank all the visitors who came to HOMAG City. We are all absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of money that was raised for Rainbows and we thank all of our visitors for their generous contributions. “The feedback and comments we received from visitors during the three-day event, have left us feeling extremely positive about the future of the UK woodworking industry. “It was great to see so many of our customers at W16 and we look forward to building relationships with prospects we met at the show. We are sure many will be visiting our Castle Donington showroom for machine demonstrations and HOMAG UK Open House events in the near future.” 01332 856500 homag-uk.co.uk

How to avoid problems with timber moisture With the cold weather setting in, coatings specialist Teknos advises on how to avoid problems associated with timber moisture content during the colder months.

How to avoid extra moisture in timber during winter Throughout the year, the ambiant moisture content of exterior joinery can vary significantly. Though species and grade determine changes in dimension, broadly speaking every 3% change in moisture content will vary timber dimensions by about 1%. Cold weather changes In winter, joinery can leave the factory at around 10% moisture content, sometimes lower if using laminated sections, then rapidly condition to 18-20% on site. This can result in changes to dimensions by 3-4% which causes joints and seals to open, letting moisture get into unprotected endgrain and rebates. To avoid these problems and prevent over-drying, store unprocessed timber in a well ventilated, covered area outside, allowing it to acclimatise to the ambient conditions. Six practical steps for on site - Remove airtight packaging before you store joinery, so that it is well ventilated. - Store joinery off the ground and cover with a permeable sheet to protect it. - Keep storage areas well ventilated, without extreme temperatures. Keep

FP277.3.indd 34

away from containers that cause condensation such as metal boxes and some protective wrappings. - If joinery is installed before completion of internal wet processes, gentle internal heating, good ventilation and using de-humidifiers will help reduce the risk of blistering and delamination as the building dries out. - Use a detergent solution to remove plaster and other building materials contamination from joinery as soon as possible. Then rinse with clean water. - Ensure that any on site assembly or modifications are fully protected, particularly cill joints, glazing beads and glazing systems. Unprotected end grain exposed by site modifications must be properly sealed and protected with two generous brush coats of Teknoseal 4000. From windows and doors to cladding or kitchen cabinets, whatever the combination of timber species, colour or application method, Teknos offers a system that enables the creation of a durable and attractive finish. Its range of primers, base stains and top coats help control the properties of certain wood types, minimise discolouration, maximise durability and protect against problems such as blue stain and surface mould. 01608 683494 teknos.co.uk

The world’s biggest brands reconditioned to the highest standards Visitors to the W16 exhibition evaluating machines for immediate or future purchases were delighted to discover a better value alternative to buying new equipment, without compromising quality, on the Ferwood UK stand. Ferwood UK MD, John Wilson, led the team in detailing what goes into creating a Ferwood Approved Machine and how Ferwood Srl recondition beam saws, edgebanders, CNC routers and machine centres at its factory near Turin, Italy. He explained how Ferwood Approved Machines are typically from the world’s-biggest brands – Homag, IMA, Biesse, SCM and other specialist manufacturers – and are all reconditioned to the highest standards. John described how every machine undergoes the Ferwood 10-step reconditioning process to carry the prestigious Ferwood Approved logo complete with a six-month warranty. Ferwood Approved Machines are offered to the UK market through the wholly owned subsidiary Ferwood UK and a sales team with over 50 years’ combined experience in supplying panel processing machines. Ferwood maintains that it is ideally placed to identify clients’ requirements and make machine recommendations, not based on brand, but on the needs, budget and specification across a spectrum of models and prices. Ferwood UK offers: - CNC beam panel saws: front-loading, rearloading and fully automatic multi saw systems for volume production; - Edgebanding machines: medium production singe-sided machines, high performance singlesided edgebanders along with double-sided edgebanders and combination lines with feeding and stacking; - CNC routers and machine centres: pod bed, flat beds, five axis, vertical machines and CNC machine centres for shaping and edgebanding;

J & C O’Meara experiences busy W16 The J & C O’Meara stand at W16 was busy throughout the show, with several machines being sold off the stand: a Genisis 512S edgebander to a company in Leicester; a Genisis P32 panel saw to a company specialising in the manufacture of kitchens and bedrooms; and an E60 Super Vertical briquetter to a company in Cumbria, with the OMC press also attracting a great deal of interest.

The Genisis range of machinery is exclusively available from J & C O’Meara and consists of a select number of machines cherry-picked from a number of the world’s leading manufacturers. Products selected are of the highest quality yet still competitively priced. The Genisis 512S edgebander comes in two variations, one with PCD tooling and one with TCT tooling to the pre milling station. This is an allnew hot melt compact edgebanding machine for coil fed materials up to 2mm in thickness. The machine comes complete with colour touch screen control, pre milling, corner rounding scrapers and buffers. Other models in the range include the 312S, a compact entry level hot melt edgebander; the 412S; and the 612S, the latest model to be introduced, with all the features found on the 512S plus an additional set of top and bottom trimmers. The Genisis P32 sliding table panel saw is J & C O’Meara’s top-selling saw. With over 100 machines currently installed around the UK, this best-seller offers a reinforced multi-chamber sliding table, as well as large diameter rollers which ensure an easy gliding and accurate motion, and is currently available at a special 25th anniversary price. Other models in the Genisis panel saw range include the XC, a heavy duty panel saw with a 1.9m sliding table; the XM-Manual, a heavy-duty sliding table panel saw with manual adjustment to the raise, lower and tilting of the sawblades and manual adjustment to the scorer; the X2, a heavy-duty sliding table panel saw with motorised adjustment to the raise, lower and tilt of the sawblades and motorised adjustment to the scorer; and the X3 Plus, a three axis panel saw with 1,500 mm rip fence and touch screen control. A wide range of briquetters – some 15 different models – are available from J & C O’Meara: those on display on the stand, the Traditional E55 and the Vertical E60 Super machines, attracted considerable attention during the show. The key difference between the Traditional and Vertical models is that the vertical briquetter can be positioned directly under a dust extraction unit, saving space and eliminating the need to manually transfer the waste. Also available from J & C O’Meara is the Nano briquetter, a compact model whose accessories include a transport tube, taking the briquettes to waist level; an automatic bagging station; a breaker device; a water cooling tank; a refrigerator; a refiner; Commander, a control panel which can be situated away from the machine; and a recycling line, an example of how to turn off-cuts into briquettes. There are various models of OMC press with either heated or cold platens, depending upon the application. The machine displayed was the very heavy duty 10ft x 5ft (3100mm x 1550mm), 160 ton machine with

touchscreen control and 10 pressing rams. OMC, based just outside of Bergamo in Italy, is a specialist manufacturer of hot, cold and membrane-pressing machines along with vertical presses for window and door production. The series of presses can be manufactured in any size and to specific requirements. The interest attracted by the press at W16 led to a number of serious enquiries that will be followed up in the weeks and months to come. Carl O’Meara was delighted with the response at W16 and with the number of enquiries and their quality. Kündig attracts attention at W16 The Kündig stand at W16, manned by Carl O’Meara of Kündig, as well as the team of regional agents, attracted considerable interest.

A Brilliant 2 1350 REd-L wide-belt sander was ordered off the stand. This machine was used to demonstrate the benefits of oblique sanding, which ensures that defects on the sanding belt are no longer transmitted to the workpiece. The edge sanders also attracted considerable interest, especially the Uniq-S. The Brilliant-2 range from Kündig has two sanding heads and can be equipped for solid wood, veneer or lacquer sanding: options are also available with one sanding head (Brilliant-1), three (Brilliant-3) or four (Brilliant-4) sanding heads. These are constant passline machines: the sanding group raises and lowers to the desired thickness rather than the workpiece, with a standard working height of 3-200 mm. It is available in working widths of 1,100, 1,350 and 1,600 mm. It is available in a variety of configurations, for various combinations of joinery, veneers, solid wood and lacquer. The model sold at W16 is an all rounder and includes lacquer sanding among its options. Kündig sanders are designed for ease of use: the sanding operation is selected from a clear, easy to use control panel. For operations used frequently or are particularly demanding, such as lacquer sanding, complex instructions can be stored and easily recalled when required. Various parameters can be adjusted in real time including feed speed and belt speed. The eco energy saving mode, fitted as standard to all the latest generation wide-belt sanders, permanently checks the required electrical energy.

FP277.3.indd 44

After a short period of time, if no workpieces are being processed, the machine starts an energy-saving function. The work performance is not at all affected. For an average workshop the savings on electrical energy are about 10-15%. A particular feature of the Brilliant sander range is the oblique sanding function: at least one of the heads (normally the last) can be set up this way, and demonstrations of this function proved particularly popular at W16. In the same way that tiny flaws can be transmitted from roller to page in a printer, so tiny defects on a sanding belt can be transmitted to the workpiece, if the belt is perpendicular to the direction of travel of the workpiece. Manufacturers always ensure that their belts are provided in the best possible condition, but this does not prevent tiny defects accumulating over time. If the belt is set at an angle other than perpendicular to the direction of travel of the workpiece, these defects cannot be transmitted to the workpiece. The difference in angle need only be slight. Demonstrations of this technique proved popular at W16: there is nothing like being able to see the evidence for yourself and touch it, not simply read about it or watch a video. If you would like a demonstration, contact Carl O’Meara to arrange an appointment. The range of edge sanders attracted considerable interest, especially the Uniq-S, the automated model. The Uniq range features a heavy cast iron working table, set up on one side for solid wood sanding and veneer sanding on the other. The height adjustment and the tilting of the abrasive belt is motorised and the oscillation is adjustable to allow full use of the abrasive. The Uniq-S includes an integrated automatic variable speed feed system on the fine sanding side, and again is suitable both for solid wood and veneered edges. The sanding pad device of the Uniq-S includes adjustment for the differing thickness in abrasive grits, and there are two guide pulleys on the front structure for long workpieces. The table size is 1,180mm x 325mmm, including a bevelling fence with a scale. Mandrel protection is included. Options include: an extra table with mandrel and abrasive bobbins for external and internal shapes; a semiround table for sanding curved pieces against the rubber-covered driving roller; and a 90mm optionally available semi-round table with extraction outlets. The integrated feed belt system allows the machine to handle the throughfeed sanding of both small and large workpieces, with pressure rollers holding the workpieces against the feed belt, or in the case of the machine displayed, the optional upper pressure belt was fitted. 0845 833 0565 kundig.co.uk

Ostermann named finalists with Sibu boards At the W16 in Birmingham, Ostermann once again showcased its large range of edgings with particular emphasis on the latest edging trends. This was supplemented with products from the extensive selection of Adhesives, Technical Profiles and Sibu Design Surfaces. The latter had been launched in 2016 and was a nominated finalist in the Elements of Innovation Award.

Specially conceived for tasteful interior design and exclusive shop and trade show applications, Ostermann presented its new range of high-grade synthetic design boards from the Austrian manufacturer, Sibu. The attractive finish, the special look and feel of furnishing elements of the more than 350 dÊcors made Ostermann an Elements Finalist. Tradesmen find SIBU design boards simple to work with and highly versatile: whether as wall panelling, sliding door panels or for home furniture, recessed back-panels or for the walls of trade fair stands. Another finalist product in the Ostermann range Besides the large selection of super matt edgings and the contrasting high gloss edgings, Ostermann presented a large number of metallic-look edgings. Amongst them was another finalist from the Elements of Innovation Award, the 3D Acrylic Edging Space Wave. This has a very special threedimensional effect and is available in fashionable metallic colours like Stainless Steel, Titanium, Bronze and Silver. SCM Group presented AirFusion-technology with Ostermann Airtec edgings Because of the perfect results obtained by using Ostermann’s Airtec edging on the SCM edgebanding machine, SCM decided to use the Ostermann Airtec edging for demonstrating the AirFusion Technology at W16. To create even more impact for the co-operation, the companies created an edging design with the logos of SCM Group and Ostermann together on one edging. Edgings for all available invisible joint technologies With Laser, Airtec and Infratec edgings, the edgings specialist Ostermann offers three different edgings for zero bondline, each of which are perfectly co-ordinated for the relevant machine technology. In addition to the co-operation with SCM, Ostermann demonstrated its expertise with three videos about zero bondline technologies. The lavishly produced videos showed not only the production, but also processing the different invisible joint edges on the respective machines. ostermann.eu

DCS Group display in unison at W16 Sharing the same platform for the first time at W16, Dust Control Systems Ltd, Ecogate Ltd and Gallito Ltd were so pleased with the level of interest in the Group’s ‘One Stop Source’ for dust extraction products and services, they have already signed up for an even bigger stand at W18.

As the exclusive UK distributor for German extraction equipment specialist Schuko, DCS Ltd was showcasing the latest developments in extraction technology with the help of a scaled-down working replica of a Schuko ECOVAR Validus Filter. As Melvyn Bathgate, sales director of DCS, explains: “Being able to show potential customers directly inside an operating filter made so much more sense of the technology … this new generation modular filter features a fan cascade system – with fans coming on-line, or off-line, according to demand – and cleaning cycles tailored to specific needs by employing a mobile compressed air regeneration system.” Also on display for the first time in the UK was the new Schuko Vacomat 350 XP TWIN; a truly mobile extraction unit but, with a capacity of 8000m3/h, this premium model can easily extract from a large CNC production machine. Visitors to the DCS Group stand also had an opportunity to see a practical demonstration of how the ECOGATE extraction optimisation system can drastically reduce electricity usage. The ‘extraction-on-demand’ demo featured the new generation Ecogate greenBOX NXT controller – built on the technology that powers modern smartphones, this cost-effective compact controller delivers state-of-the-art functionality; allowing control of up to 32 Ecogates from a smartphone, tablet, or other internet-connected device. Chris Oldfield, managing director of Ecogate, comments: “As well as being able to explain the significant benefits of the Ecogate system to potential end users, W16 also provided us with an opportunity to meet with established dust extraction installers who expressed an interest in becoming resellers. As the sole distributor of the Ecogate range we are always keen to discuss aspects of the product training and sales assistance we offer to authorised Ecogate installers.” Gallito completed the DCS Group presentation with an open-fronted dry filter spray booth, a bench-type spray booth, a fully enclosed paint mix room and a sample selection of its new Fast Clip range of extraction ducting. Gallito’s managing director, Ian Ward, reported: “We were delighted with the high number of enquiries for both spray booths and our new Fast Clip Duct. The spray booth and paint kitchen on display were sold at the show, and we are now busy following up all other enquiries.” DCSlimited.co.uk ecogate.co.uk gallito.co.uk

Success for Qwood at W16 Last month, Qwood presented its everincreasing original range of wood composite window and door profiles at W16 at the NEC in Birmingham. Qwood partnered with OH Doors and Panels on a stand that displayed the full range of conservation window beads and bars, which this year have been enhanced with the introduction of innovative click-in parting and staff beads for sash windows. At W16 Qwood was a finalist in the Elements of Innovation Awards for these new profile designs. The partnership with OH Doors & Panels is linked with the Qwood bolection moulds for door panels. These profiles provide door manufacturers with decorative panel edgings that have all the benefits of a timber trim without any of the problems. This is what all original Qwood composite profiles can boast – they do not rot, warp or have knots, yet they are always straight and can be painted like timber. Joiners who use them save time and money. Manufactured in Oldham, Qwood beads and bars have been exclusively developed for the window and door market, and before being released they always undergo extensive and independent tests for painting and reversion to ensure the quality is the best. They are also the only wood composite beads, bars and trims that have both Forest Stewardship Council

Qwood produces window and door profiles FSC-C121902 and PEFC Chain of Custody Accreditation – vital aspects of the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Qwood’s national sales manager Ian Newey was pleased with Qwood’s experience at W16: “We were most pleased to see so many of our existing Qwood joiners, who continue to

benefit from the value of our profiles. We also met several potential new users of Qwood. At W16 we were able to assure them that there was only one source for original Qwood beads and bars, and we are now looking forward to developing new partnerships with them too.” info@qwood.co.uk

The world’s most ergonomic sander just got smarter Mirka is upgrading its DEROS sander with the latest technology to safeguard users from HAVS (hand arm vibration syndrome), challenging the status quo in the marketplace by developing innovative products and tools to resolve key issues in production environments.

The new Mirka DEROS has an integrated vibration sensor and is equipped with Bluetooth low energy technology which can be connected to a mobile device with the new myMirka app. The myMirka app is available to download free of charge through both the Apple Store and Google Play. It indicates vibration levels on a colour-graded scale, and advises on how to lower the vibration if required. Additionally, the speed can be visualised in a separate graph. An in-app purchase will enable users to track the daily vibration in relation to European standards. The Mirka DEROS has a low profile design, so the hand is close to the vertical surface,

delivering good control over the sanding process. Its long body encompasses an ergonomic grip, which assists in reducing arm fatigue, minimising the risk of HAVS. Craig Daycock, managing director of Mirka UK, says: “With our tools, we always aim to put the user first, from the design of the product to the high quality finish it offers, and the enhanced Mirka DEROS is no different. The app development is the next stage in our continued investment in our product ranges and will assist in providing businesses with an insight into how sanding methods influence vibration levels.” mirka.co.uk

W16 REVIEW

www.furnitureproduction.net

The answer to faster tee nut insertion Think how a business would benefit from a faster application of tee nuts – the Sigma tee nut machine delivers those improvements in speed, costs and quality. Nottinghamshirebased firm, Jet Press, is the sole UK supplier of Sigma tee nut machines and has the expertise to provide the machine that is right for all businesses.

The Sigma tee nut machine system can speed up the insertion process without losing any of the precision and craftsmanship that is expected by customers. Jet Press says that the insertion of tee nuts can be consistently deeper and straighter with these proven machines. The tee nuts are automatically fed by a vibrating hopper bowl which ensures that they are uniformly positioned into the track leading into the machine, ready for insertion. The machine is triggered by a footswitch which leaves the operator’s hands free to safely hold the timber in place. The standard insertion machine is capable of up to 2000 insertions an hour, making a considerable difference to the productivity for any volume furniture producer. Speed is not the only benefit: Jet Press says the consistent accuracy achieved by the machine far surpasses that of a manual insertion process. Sigma’s rivet tee nut machines add further enhancement by combining insertion and riveting in one operation. In addition to the benefits of the standard tee nuts, rivet nuts add a far greater push-out resistance which can eliminate secondary processes from many applications. Also, the flared barrel allows an easier lead-in when applying a bolt which can speed up assembly. Many of Jet Press’ customers have utilised this technology to streamline production whilst increasing the quality of the finished product. A well-known furniture producer has purchased a number of these machines and recently commented: “These machines have revolutionised our production; we can get through the same amount of tee nut insertions in around half the time of manual insertion. The accuracy of the machines has also reduced our rejects and returns by a significant amount.” There are two additional options available; a drill-drive option which combines the drilling and insertion of the tee nut in a single operation and a drill-drive-rivet option which features a sophisticated computer-controlled machine to drill the timber and then insert and rivet all in one operation. An alternative table-top machine achieves up to 1000 insertions per hour and is designed to suit low- to mid-volume applications. Manually fed with an adjustable air pressure setting to vary the depth of insertion, the machine can be mounted to any sturdy workbench or can be supplied with an optional stand. Each machine has safety systems for the peace of mind of both operator and factory management and is delivered and installed by Jet Press. Operator and maintenance training is also carried out when a new machine is installed. Jet Press’ maintenance engineers are available for call-out and servicing and the company endeavours to keep replacement machine parts in stock to ensure reliable and efficient aftersales service. “No-one in the UK knows these machines better,” says Jet Press’ sales and marketing director Andrew Mitchell. “We have a wide range of imperial and metric thread sizes and lengths in stock to suit various applications. We will gladly demonstrate how a Sigma tee nut machine can improve your production efficiency,” adds Andrew. “Seeing the process first hand is always the best way to convince yourself of the savings to be made in both time and money. A close-up inspection of the quality of insertion is a must, which can be best seen by holding the wood, directly after the machine has done its work. “A demonstration video can be viewed on our website www. jetpress/teenutmachine and our You Tube channel. Our sales team can also visit your production facility to discuss your specific requirements and advise on the best solution for your application.” 01623 551 800 jetpress.com

Blum offers a diverse range of hinges for various applications and almost every type of installation.

Blum’s soft-close hinge solutions

Blum’s Clip top hinge allows for a soft-close mechanism

Blum’s innovative Clip top Blumotion hinge delivers soft and effortless closing with all the components integrated into the hinge boss. The hinge comes in a wide range of models, giving the right solution for almost every door. Clip top Blumotion hinges come in various models with different opening angles. The standard 110° hinge is, for example, suitable for door depths of up to approximately 24mm. For thinner door depths of 15mm or more, the fittings specialist from Hoechst has developed a 107° hinge with integrated soft close that requires very little drilling depth – just 11.5mm. Blum also offers soft-close hinges for profile, blind corner, angled and aluminium frame doors. Even if users opt for glass or mirror doors that project on all four sides – as is frequently found in bathrooms – they can still use integrated softclose Blumotion. There is a special mounting plate for such applications, ensuring that door-to-cabinet assembly is simple. Thanks to the tried and tested Blum Clip mechanism, it is quick and toolfree. In addition, three-dimensional adjustment delivers precise gap alignment. blum.com

SOLID WOOD PROCESSING 61

Many door manufacturers have a requirement for a simple, easy to program, accurate automatic machine that can be used for the production of door components. The Centauro ALFA NC slotting/milling machine can do all this and more.

Centauro ALFA a hit with door manufacturers

To date, JJ Smith has installed over 20 ALFA machines in the UK, the majority of which are at companies producing doors and door sets, although due the versatility of the machine some customers are also using the ALFA for window vent slotting, stair string machining, louvre doors and also for the production of garden products. Customers who already have ALFA machines include Ian Firth Hardware, Allan Brothers, Howarth Windows & Doors, Benlowe Group, High-Tech Joinery, W.Howard, Joinerycraft and UK Fire Doors. As standard, the machine is equipped with a fully programmable router/milling head that operates in both the vertical and horizontal, thus giving the machine a high level of flexibility. Programming is via the simple-to-use graphic POWER 1000 touch screen control unit using

FP277.3.indd 61

electronic macro templates that visualise many of the different machining applications the ALFA can do. The machine has the built-in facility to produce left hand/right hand linings either through the program or by working from a left hand or right hand stop. Other important features include easy-to-position pneumatic front reference stops along with vertical clamping cylinders that hold the component securely on a solid bed. In addition, a pneumatically-activated tasting probe can be used to detect the timber thickness before each individual machining operation. This is particularly important when hinge recesses are being machined in to a door lining that may have some thickness discrepancies. Thanks to the tasting probe, the hinge recesses will always be machined accurately to the same depth. For maximum safety, the

machine is equipped with side/rear perimeter guards and a front safety light curtain. Operator training is carried out by JJ Smith’s own technicians and this can usually be completed within five or six hours. Popular options include the ISO30 pneumatic quick change tool system, extended Y-axis stroke of 400mm and office editor software for remote programming on an office PC. Also, the ALFA can be equipped with an additional programmable router head fitted with a very small dia of cutter of say 2.5/3mm diameter. This can be used if there is requirement to square off hinge recess corners to enable square hinges to be fitted, also it can be used for spot/ pilot drilling for hinge/lock screws. New options recently introduced include a turntable device for doors plus a wider table allowing for two jambs to be clamped and machined in one operation. Table extensions also mean that stair strings up to 4.2m can be machined on the ALFA. Exclusive UK distributor JJ Smith now regards the competitivelypriced Centauro ALFA as a standard stock item and so usually has a machine set up and available for demonstration at its recentlyrenovated Liverpool showrooms. The ALFA is just one of a range of programmable machines that JJ Smith supplies dedicated for joinery production, with others including the Centauro BETA CNC swing chisel mortiser and Martin range of fully programmable spindle moulders. 0151 548 9000 jjsmith.co.uk

Gerber AutoMatch increases throughput by 75% cutting labour costs in half Making its debut IFAI Expo, Gerber’s fully automated solution boosts upholstery pattern-matching precision. AutoMatch, a revolutionary layout and cutting solution that helps furniture manufacturers preserve visual continuity in their finished products, recently made its debut at the 2016 Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) Expo in the US. The fully automated system is the latest in a long line of innovations from Gerber Technology, the world leader in integrated software and automation solutions for apparel and industrial markets. Gerber’s AutoMatch comes with some impressive statistics: the system increases throughput by up to 75% and helps furniture manufacturers reduce labour costs by as much as 50%. AutoMatch utilises advanced digital imaging technology to ensure that patterns such as stripes, plaids and other complex designs continue seamlessly from one cut piece to the next. “Pattern continuity is the hallmark of quality upholstered furniture,” says Tom Gordon, director, product management at Gerber Technology. “However, ensuring continuity can be extremely time consuming and prone to errors, adding significant time and cost with

wasted materials and labour associated with re-cutting.” The AutoMatch technology captures a piece of fabric in a single digital image and automatically corrects for placement errors, pattern repeat variations and distortions. AutoMatch is accurate and repeatable, and most importantly, it can help furniture manufacturers slash costs over conventional methods that rely on teams of operators to manually align patterns before cutting. Traditional matching methods require highlyskilled workers and rely solely on the human eye for accuracy. In addition to being time consuming, the manual system is costly and

SO MANY WAYS TO DRILL THE PERFECT

more likely to result in waste as a result of poorly matched patterns. By contrast, AutoMatch takes human error out of the equation. In addition to ensuring greater accuracy, AutoMatch helps manufacturers save on labour costs. The system utilises a single operator, and – unlike the manual alignment method – it does not require extensive training or labour skilled in furniture design and pattern matching. “Gerber developed AutoMatch as a direct response to pain points experienced by furniture manufacturers,” Tom says, “I can’t think of a better, more appropriate setting to unveil it to the public.” gerbertechnology.com

The successful Devon-based vehicle body builder has recently moved from its Cullompton home to impressive upgraded facilities located a few miles north-east in Uffculme to improve its output and efficiency. John Legg toured the new premises and caught up with the Trucksmith team to see how the transition was progressing.

Managing logistics is a crucial part of a business plan. Badly loaded, often overweight vans are difficult to handle and cause a plethora of avoidable issues which cost so much in the longer run. The professional way forward is to utilise the best solution to enable staff to perform efficiently and for customers to benefit from speedier and safer service. Trucksmith provides the optimum among converted vans – and its reputation and demand for its products and services is growing. So what are the differences between a standard van from Renault or Vauxhall, and a Trucksmith option? A Trucksmith LoLoader differs from the average van because it has developed and fine-tuned a class-leading, low-floored Luton conversion. The Trucksmith LoLoader is the market leader because it is built to an exceptional standard and offers a range of benefits. Among a host of performance improvements over standard vehicles, Trucksmith’s LoLoader coversions are built to meet a client’s exact needs, be the customer a flower or furniture dealer, specific requirements require different solutions to make it as easy, convenient and efficient as possible. Some of the LoLoader benefits include: the lowest load height in its sector of just 550mm, or 450mm with air suspension engaged; a slipresistant plywood floor; 270° opening rear doors for easy access; directional interior work lamp; and no ‘O’ licence required. Additionally, regarding European Whole Vehicle Type Approval, Trucksmith is a fully VCA-registered firm. The company’s facilities are also of the highest standard, indeed its conversion centre meets Renault’s highest legal and technical

FP277.3.indd 69

Trucksmith LoLoader vehicles are becoming an increasingly common sight on the roads requirements which therefore delivers Renaultapproved quality. The warranty that the company offers mirrors that of the manufacturer and the warranty inspections and assessment are carried out regionally, not recovered to base as some firms will require. Simon Partridge, executive sales and brand manager, Trucksmith, says: “The efficiency of our vehicles is matched by their versatility. We can create specialist vehicles such as food retail or ice cream vans, a mobile library or even a showroom. We are able to undertake these conversions and any other specialist requirements within our

own production facility. We find the 3.5 tonne configuration popular because drivers do not need to obtain a specialist operating licence.” Dan Trebble, managing director, Trucksmith: “We understand that payload is a crucial issue, in the furniture sector in particular. They require volume but dealing with heavy individual items can upset the sensitive balance,” he says. “Through our innovative manufacturing methods, our low-loading fleet can achieve a payload of 1300kg, with the driver, fuel, spare wheel and toolkit taken into account. Fuel consumption averages at 30mpg fully laden, but can be significantly more on a run.” ›››

Trucksmith Q&A Since the 1980s, Trucksmith has been adapting Luton-type vehicles to maximise capacity – how do today’s vehicles differ from those made 30-odd years ago? “Traditionally, you would build a Luton type body onto what’s known as a chassis cab which had two steel chassis legs to build from and fix a body on top of. Using the front wheel drive platform cab, you have the ability to achieve the low loading height of just 550mm but also much higher payloads. “The two structures – the base vehicle and our body – complement and combine to each other forming a monocoque construction, reducing the need for chassis legs and so forth which all add weight and reduce payload.” Having recently moved from Cullompton to more expansive and integrated premises at Uffculme, how has the business changed and what are the ramifications? “All departments have benefited from the move allowing and facilitating continued sustainable growth. Trucksmith has increased efficiency and capacity by installing a dedicated vehicle manufacturing production line which has reduced lead times. This in turn has produced more orders, bringing in more revenue to reinvest and continue the great progress we have been making in our first 30 years of business success. “Research and development has been one of our key strokes of genius. It allows us to continue using and combining well-managed quality control plans with continued improvement. “We are now manufacturing and building the body in a quicker, more effective way, using the latest hi-tech equipment and materials, making us market-leading in terms of quality and payload. More importantly for the end user, we are able to offer all of this and still build cheaper than when we originally designed this style of body 23 years ago.” What are the most important issues a furniture business needs to consider when looking at these types of vehicles for the their businesses? “The manufacturers are building base vehicles heavier, year after year, model after model, which in turn makes our job harder as the furniture industry wants to carry more and more load – the pressure to increase payload is a constant challenge. “More and more vehicles are being pulled over by the roadside to be weighed, with operators who are overloaded being fined. Our continued

FP277.3.indd 70

The new production line has had a significant impact on the business improvement processes coupled with our research and development programmes – second to none in the industry – are constantly finding new ways to save a kg here and a kg there. This ultimately makes a considerable difference to a furniture business where the load is rarely lightweight. “This continuous process allows us to constantly improve payload. For example, with the introduction of the new EuroVI engines with Adblue, the base vehicle has increased in weight by 45kg. “Over the last two years, we have managed to reduce our body weight – from offering payloads of 1234kg when the new models were launched, we are now able to offer over 1300kg of payload including the allowance for driver, fuel, spare wheel and tools.” What are Trucksmith’s plans for the future? “Our plans are to continue with the good work that was started by the company founders 30 years ago, with the same values and priorities that laid such strong foundations. We will continue to invest in research and development which will ensure we stay market leaders now and in the future. “As a business we are investing in more branded products into different industries other than furniture, but they will still have the Trucksmith build quality, style and support that we offer, whenever we put our name on a vehicle.” 01884 841055 trucksmith.co.uk
