My travels this month included a stop off to attend the biennial Xylexpo event in Milan – a show not without its issues over the last few years, but this edition more than lived up to the hype. This year, the major brands exhibited together under one roof, once more creating real pull for visitors from across Europe – evidenced by the 14% growth in visitor numbers overall, with almost a third coming from overseas. The show itself had much to commend it, far more energy and a positive environment making a difference to visitors, with a particularly strong showing from SCM and Biesse. A full report will follow in next month’s issue. The entente cordiale extended to a fantastic evening, La Notte di Xylexpo, which brought exhibitors, past and current, together with members of Acimall, the Italian woodworking trade organisation. During the good-natured gathering, recognition was given to the 47 companies which exhibited at the very first event in 1968 – Interbimall, as it was then – and who were still exhibiting at this year’s event. Alongside that, the founders and many of the presidents from Acimall were also (rightly) commended for their work. The evening concluded with the Xylexpo Innovation Awards – more of which will feature in next month’s issue. I do hope this rediscovered ‘Made in Italy’ harmony holds – it it certainly paying dividends, as a divided industry is only weakened over time. Another Italian event, Sicam, which is held in Pordenone and serves the fititngs and components sector, also appears to be on a strong footing, according to the news that the Italian Ministry for Economic Development has selected it as a leading Italian trade fair that is undisputed in its sector and will finance incoming and networking initiatives.

Daltons Wadkin mark 50 years of loyal service Carol Bellaby, well known throughout the industry during almost 50 years of employment by Daltons Wadkin, retired on 12th May. Carol joined the company at the tender age of 18 in the year 1967 when the company still occupied their original premises under railway arches near the centre of Nottingham. Starting as a shorthand typist, going on to be secretary and later PA to MD Francis Dalton Carol was well known to most companies in the woodworking machine industry as well as to Daltons Wadkin’s wide customer base. She

was the ever reliable voice at the end of the telephone, always ready to assist the sales department and customers alike whether enquiries be large or small. She was also widely known to the industry press, having forged contacts with most of the prominent timber trade magazines over many years. Francis Dalton said, “We are sorry to lose Carol and I can’t believe that she has put up with me as her boss for 50 years! She has been an excellent ambassador for the company and we wish her good fortune in a well deserved retirement.”

PWS power through £250,000 fundraising target for Help For Heroes Mark Stephenson, CEO of PWS, together with four veterans, PWS colleagues and support riders and staff have completed the gruelling 320-mile Blood Sweat & Gears cycling and, in doing so, powered through their £250,000 fundraising target in aid of Help For Heroes. The route represented an immense physical challenge to the injured veterans and support riders alike and the months of hard winter training certainly paid off when they were faced with 22,000 feet of punishing climbs. The 6-day challenge, across the Western Cape of South Africa, started in Franschhoek and was brought to a triumphant close in Knysna, often in very unpleasant and inclement weather conditions, including strong headwinds, hail and heavy rain. Comments Mark Stephenson, CEO at PWS: “What started off as a pie-in-the-sky idea for me, quickly grew to become an exceptional project. Blood Sweat & Gears has surpassed all my expectations and turned into something extremely special that stirred up so many emotions for all involved. “I have a genuine feeling of pride knowing that we will help to change some lives, not only for the incredible veterans who took part, but for many more who will benefit from the money raised. “We have already nailed the £250,000 target and with donations pledged by corporates, plus some additional fundraising activities to come, we will be edging closer to reaching £300,000 soon. It represents a staggering performance by everyone involved. My sincere thanks go to all our very generous suppliers and customers who have so kindly supported the challenge and made it such a great success.”

Staff at PWS embraced the project, so much so, they instigated their own Watt-bike challenge to coincide with the team cycling in South Africa. Competing against local company Baltic Training and students at Sedbergh School, the three teams battled it out over four days for the greatest cumulative distance. Youth won over experience, however the combined money raised was over £9000 so every team felt as though they were worthy winners. The money raised from Blood Sweat & Gears will go directly to Phoenix House, the Help For Heroes Recovery Centre in Catterick Garrison to fund psychological wellbeing programmes over the coming years. Mark Stephenson has been a regular supporter of Help For Heroes for a number of years, from donating adapted kitchens to two of their Recovery Centres through to hosting vocational training to support veterans in their employment resettlement. The four veterans included Jon Knott, a recumbent cyclist who served in the RAF but was discharged when he developed Multiple Sclerosis, and Sean Donlan, who suffered severe brain injury following an explosion caused by a rocket-propelled grenade. The team spirit throughout the ride was phenomenal and Jon summed this up perfectly when he said: “We started as a team, we finished as a team.” The team also included two Rugby World Cup winners, Will Greenwood MBE and Morne Du Plessis as well as PWS directors John Lennon and Jonathan Whisker. This year’s Sicam will be at capacity!

According to the organiser of the popular Italian trade event, the sector’s important players will be at one of the key events of the year for the international market. Sicam 2016, the international exhibition of components, accessories, and semi-finished products for the furniture industry, is fast taking shape and is scheduled to be held at Pordenone from 18th to 21st October. The layout of all nine halls of the Pordenone trade fair area has been defined with just a very few spaces yet to be assigned. The SICAM website has an up-to-date list of exhibitors available. Sicam is widely recognised as being among top trade fairs dealing with Italian-made products. With the aim of enhancing the value of great trade fair events that give visibility to ‘Made in Italy’ products, and to relaunch its image throughout the world, the Ministry for Economic Development has selected 39 leading Italian trade fairs that are undisputed in their sector to finance incoming and networking initiatives. Sicam is one of the events chosen for this scheme. Again this year, in addition to the usual presence of professional operators from over 90 countries, Pordenone will welcome delegations from emerging countries in the furniture and furnishings industry. This is an additional element that consolidates Sicam’s prominent role as a builder of new international business relations. It is already possible to register through the website exposicam.it, so you can directly get your entrance card to the trade fair. Filling out the registration form is quick and easy: it allows you to save time at the entrance to the trade fair and avoid pointless waiting. Uniting effectiveness and efficiency in the services provided to exhibitors and visitors has always been a priority for Sicam – it is one of the keys to its success. exposicam.it

GLOSSMAX GlossMax High Gloss panels are produced with an advanced unique technology, going through a variety of industrial processes, in which adhesive and UV lacquer is applied to melamine coated MDF or particle boards to achieve a decorative, shiny surfaced wood panel. In the hot coating process that achieves excellent adhesion to the melamine coated surface, PUR (Polyurethane) adhesive coating is applied to the melamine surface. Once the Polyurethane adhesive has gone through chemical curing an outstanding hard surface which is resistant to scratches, impacts and wear is achieved. The PUR substance is also durable against UV rays. The outer layer, which hardens with the UV rays applied directly after, provides an excellent level of gloss. This technology has forged a new path in surface coating, brought forth the natural appearance and texture of solid wood and provided a solution which has simplified the surface finish application. GlossMax panels create modern, graceful furniture combinations with mirrorshine for kitchen, bath, home, office and all other decoration projects.

Ranheat for a cleaner environment There is much talk in the press about the effects of small particulate matter and the effect on human health. A recent example is the effect of diesel engines releasing small particulate matter (PM) mainly PM 2.5 and PM 5. The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) has seen an increase in the number of wood burning boilers being installed. In September 2013 new lower limits for particulate emissions from wood burning boilers came into effect along with the same limit for boilers under the guidance note PG1/12(13) in terms of limits it went down from 200mg/m3 to 60mg3. Normal multi-cyclone flue gas cleaning systems can get down to 100mg but could not consistently meet the new lower limit. Boiler plants that are capable of burning over 90kg per hour come under the guidance note PG1/12(13) and require an annual test carried out by an accredited test house, a manufactures type test certificate is not enough the boiler plant must pass the test every year. Faced with this new limit Ranheat Engineering set about designing and manufacturing a range of ceramic filter units not just to get below the limits set but to remove as much of the small particulate matter as possible. Woking in conjunction with Glosfume who manufacture the filter elements, Ranheat set about designing a range of filters using these ceramic elements. Typically

FP272.7_pages.indd 8

the Ranheat filters run at 5mg/m3 well below the limits set. The ceramic filter elements look like a ceramic test tube – the inside is the clean side and the outside is the dirty side. Each filter can hold up to 280 such tubes. The suction on the inside of the tubes draws the particulate onto the outside

of the tube where it collects and forms a cake. The PLC control system measures the pressure drop across the filters and adjusts the speed of the exhaust fan in line with the pressure drop across the filter elements. Once the pressure drop reaches a pre-set level a pulse of compressed air is sent

down the inside of the tube to blast the cake off of the tube and is collected in a bin at the base of the filter. Ranheat’s ceramic filter systems can be used with all makes of biomass boilers. 01604 750005 sales@ranheat.com

ProAir – the invisible difference Since the inception of laser technology, the interest for zero joint technologies continued to swell. The most popular alternative has been hot-air technology. AirTec technology is a welding process to apply edgeband to boards in place of conventional hot-melt adhesive through the use of hot-air activation of a functional layer applied to the reverse of the edging. The functional layer, made of a special polymer is applied to the edging thus eliminating the need for any additional hot-melt glue application in the edgebander itself. This eliminates the need for heating-up time and glue tank changing for different edge colours. Hot-air units use the very simple principle of compressed hot air (400-500° C) to perform the melting of the functional layer applied to the reverse of the hot-air edging. This activates that layer and bonds the edging to the panel fibers. In addition, it is environmentally friendly providing a clean, green technology that eliminates glue and fumes. Cost-effective The hot-air system offers a costeffective alternative to other fusion technologies in the market and boasts reduced set-up costs and is ready to use immediately. Hot-air is ideal for clean working due to the omission of adhesives, cleaning and release agents, and there is less maintenance and production work and no need to purchase and storage adhesives. ProAir from Portugese edging specialist is an ABS edging with a special functional layer on the reverse of the edging. This layer consists of a special polymer that is activated using the hot-air technology. Because no hot-melt adhesive is used, staining/discolouring of the joint is minimised. It is an adhesive based zero-joint solution which

FP272.7_pages.indd 10

enhances the adhesives properties and the overall resistance to heat, water, moisture and dirt while giving a very good optical zero-joint finish. Advantages The advantages of ProAir is that it allows a ideal transition from edging to panel with clear advantages in terms of technical and optical results: optical zero-joint finish, greater water and moisture resistance, better heat resistance, less sensitive to dirt The ProAir edging was specifically developed by Proadec to match the specific parameters of modern hot-air units. It is produced in a dedicated extrusion line and features a special functional layer based on top materials in order to assure a high quality edging for hot air processing. For its quality and reliability, ProAir

differentiates from other airTec edging in the market as its special polymer functional layer enhances robustness and usability of any item of furniture. The adhesion properties and the resistance to heat, moisture and water is greatly improved. As the functional layer is less sensitive to dirt, ageing is a thing of the past. Specifications – ABS It is a available in unicolours, fantasies and woodgrains in widths from 16-60mm and thicknesses from 1-2mm. All ABS finishes are available and it also comes in lacquered finishes, both matt and high gloss. In terms of Pro-Air’s application, in most cases in the market, a change in the edging width or thickness and/or a change to a different colour means the processing

parameters also need to be changed. Not with ProAir – this is only possible because the functional layer of ProAir is adjusted in production according to the edging specifications (colour, thickness) and therefore the key application parameters for each equipment do not need to change according to the thickness or colour of the edging. ProAir edging was extensively tested over many months and optimised to be ready for the market. To further improve this product, Proadec purchased a Biesse AirTec edgebander in order to carry out internally all the testes needed to approve and test the quality of ProAir. Specification guidelines were produced as the exact application parameters vary according to the machine manufacturer. 01322 389932 proadec.co.uk

Premium rate cashback from the Government likely to be available only for a limited period Talbotts Biomass Energy Systems has successfully installed a number of Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) compliant boilers into the UK’s woodworking industries since the scheme was launched in 2011. Over 100 installations have been completed where they are benefiting from the RHI. The renewable heat incentive scheme is financial support provided by the Government where the end user gets paid for every kW of eligible heat used in their premises. This may be for factory space heating or heating for offices or a process. Therefore companies involved in wood-based manufacturing industries such as kitchen, furniture makers or timber processors can not only benefit from a reduction in wood waste disposal and energy costs but also from a cashback incentive paid by the Government. A quick pay back from the initial capital investment is achieved and

once accredited to the scheme, end users can earn year on year, up to 20 years in total. Talbotts are one of the only manufacturers where it has RHI emissions certification for a wide range of wood-based fuels such as MDF, chipboard, MFC, OSB, softwood, hardwood, particleboard, plywood, wood chips and wood pellets. It has sizes ranging from 199kW up to 999kW, of which multiples can be installed. The RHI scheme is currently at a premium and in order to take advantage of the benefits the advice is to act now. A consultation is currently under way where the tariffs are likely to be significantly less to new applicants next year. Talbotts has built up a large customer base where they are accredited to the RHI and include Biker Group, DFS, AW Champion, Allport Packaging, Hills Panel Products, Furmanac, Welcome Furniture, Vincent Timber, Sven Christiansen, Select Timber, Midland Building Products, Kingspan and the list goes on. Midland Building Products, based in the West Midlands, manufactures door frames, door sets, internal fire doors and glazed screens and purchased an MWE999 boiler, fuel bunker and Untha LR1400 shredder from Talbotts in September 2014, to which it has benefited from two winter heating seasons of producing renewable heat and subsequently the RHI cashback. As a long-standing customer of Talbotts it replaced an older type Talbott air heating system for a larger biomass boiler which provides comprehensive heating to their factory and offices. The MWE range of boilers also meets the lowest emissions outputs with standard features such as automatic heat exchange cleaning and de-ash and ignition, also ensuring optimum efficiency. Peter Zarelli, commercial manager of Midland Building Products comments: “We are a long-standing customer of Talbotts

to which we have always been impressed with the level of service provided by them. As part of our commitment to carbon reduction and sustainability we wanted to upgrade our wood burning space heater to a larger low emissions boiler that was eligible for the RHI. We contacted them to see what solutions they had available. “Their local sales representative, Richard Fielding, visited us and provided us with a viable solution. We are very impressed with the quality and robust design of the plant to which we have benefited from nearly two years of smooth operation. “Talbotts took care of the RHI accreditation and have continued to support us along the way. We are very pleased we opted for the Talbotts MWE boiler solution and the revenue received. It gives us the opportunity to invest back into our company to provide more competitive solutions to our clients and ensure we meet our environmental obligations.” The Talbotts brand has been established since the 1970s and are specialists in offering solutions to the woodworking industries. They have dedicated RHI, service, spare parts and technical departments to ensure customers needs are responded to efficiently. It also has a broad product range available consisting of fully automated comprehensive biomass boiler solutions, automatic and simple manual-fed air space heating solutions and Untha wood shredders, to which it is a UK distributor. 01785 813 772 sales@talbotts.co.uk talbotts.co.uk

The Brandt Ambition 1100 and 1200 series – affordable entry level edgebanding Homag understands the challenges that smaller sized businesses face whilst trying to survive in a fiercely competitive market. Companies are expected to be fast and flexible with an efficient production process, yet still be able to produce premium quality products with cost-effective pricing.

The Brandt Ambition 1110 – powerful yet compact entry level edgebanding

To provide an effective solution, Brandt has developed the powerful, but compact Brandt Ambition 1100 and 1200 edgebander series. These models ensure that even the smallest of workshops aisre able to invest in the latest technology. The entry level range provides flexible production whether it is for batch size 1, bespoke products or mass panel production. Entry level edgebanding with the powerful Brandt Ambition 1100 series The highly flexible and intuitive 1110-1120 FC series can be configured with EVA or PUR precision gluing units for perfect edgebanding on a variety of materials. The automatic fixed length magazine can be used for coiled and strip material at fixed lengths of up to 3mm thick for flexible edgebanding. The easy-touse trimming unit allows a quick changeover between chamfer, straight and radius units for optimum edge joint quality. Users can choose from a number of configurations to give them additional facilities including pre-

FP272.7_pages.indd 18

milling and even corner rounding. Additionally, the 1100 series is available with two free tool spaces to offer a bespoke solution for every company. Three different unit tools are available to be mounted in the spaces, including profile scraping, glue joint scraping and buffing, in a variety of combinations. These unit options reduce the need for hand finishing and increase the production capabilities of the machine. The beauty of the 1100 series is that it can be configured to suit most requirements, despite its compact footprint, making it ideal for the smaller business. An upgraded edge for Colemans Kitchens and Bedrooms Colin Coleman, managing director of Colemans Kitchens and Bedrooms explains: “We purchased the Brandt Ambition 1110 F when we needed to replace our existing edgebander. After installing the Brandt Ambition 1110 F, we looked to add an additional pre-milling tool. Homag UK made it affordable for us to invest in such machinery when we thought it wouldn’t be possible for a smaller-sized company. “Overall we are able to achieve a

far better finish and handle thicker edging on products than before with less time in production. On top of this it has expanded our production capabilities allowing us to produce new products and finishes. The operating software is easy to use and I can’t praise the machine enough for what it’s done for a company the size of mine.” Extended production capabilities for Philip Dowse Interiors Philip Dowse Interiors invested in a Brandt Ambition 1110 F edgebander when its workload changed. Chris Needham, workshop manager at Philip Dowse Interiors explains: “As a bespoke cabinetmaker, our cabinets were always faced with a hardwood frame so we rarely had to carry out any tape edging work. However due to trends changing within the marketplace, we needed to be able to achieve a high quality finish carcass with a durable edge. “To achieve this, we chose to install the additional pre-milling tool, profile scraper and glue scraper units to our Brandt Ambition 1110 F. The edgebander has given us the ability to add solid lippings,

which makes the whole solid lipping experience more user-friendly and efficient. The added pre-milling tool was an invaluable extra as it ensures we receive a clean finish every time for perfect results. The machine has not stopped working since installation and it has transformed the way we do things. It’s more efficient and produces a much better product.” Perfect edge finishing with the Brandt Ambition 1210-1230 FC range Within the entry level Brandt Ambition series, the 1210-1230 FC models offer a complete processing solution, previously only available on larger machines. Equipped with all the impressive standard specification of the Brandt Ambition 1100 series, the 1200 series boasts a tiltable end trimming unit for both straight and chamfer trimming and a top/bottom trimming unit for perfect edge finishing. For optional finishing extras, the 1200 series can also be configured with a joint trimming unit, contour trimming unit, radius scraper, glue joint scraper or a buffing unit to eliminate the need for hand finishing.

The Brandt Ambition 1230 airTec – invisible joint technology for the entry level user As standard, the 1200 series is fitted with a contact heating shoe that, when optionally activated, directly transfers contact heat into the board edge prior to the glue application to the workpiece edge. This notably optimises the edgebanding quality, especially with difficult edging materials or when used in very low ambiant temperatures. With fast feed speed of 11m/ min, the Brandt Ambition 1200 series offers an affordable solution for entry level-sized companies. In a recent development, Brandt’s 1200 series is now available with airTec technology. This addition to its armoury means that invisible joint technology is now available

for the entry level user. Extended benefits for Made 2 Measure with the Brandt 1230 FC edgebander Homag installed a Brandt Ambition 1230 FC edgebander for bedroom, fitted kitchens and home office furniture manufacturer, Made 2 Measure Fitted Furniture. Matthew Bates, managing director at Made 2 Measure Fitted Furniture comments: “Our main reason for purchasing the new edgebander was to guarantee the consistency of the finish quality of our products. “After six months, we are already seeing the consistent high quality we needed, as well

as achieving significantly faster production speeds. We have never had an edgebander with a corner rounding unit before and it’s opened up door production capabilities for us, in addition to reducing edge thickness changeover times.” Simple, fast and intuitive edgebander operating software Another key feature across Brandt’s entry level ambition edgebander series is that it is fitted with Homag’s easyControl EC 10+ software as standard, offering both quality and precision with the touch of a button. Utilising a clear, 7in graphic display, users are able to use

the simple and fast touch operation to check machine production status. With a simple menu format, the operating system offers fast access to the machine’s unit functions through dedicated control buttons. The easyControl EC 10+ software also enables users to quickly change edgebanding material through user-defined programs and access error diagnostics for efficient operating. Based on a three-acre manufacturing site at Ferrybridge, Yorkshire, the family-owned and operated firm is a major producer of new and refurbished pallets. Run by husband and wife Nick and Lee Bennett, IPTS produces around 20,000 pallets per week with large quantities of pallets always held in stock. Over 500m3 of FSC certified, home grown British timber goes into producing their high quality pallets every week, and the firm holds the coveted international ISPM 15 quality standard for production of heat treated pallets. “Recent investment in a new automated pallet manufacturing line meant we had outgrown our existing extraction plant,” explains managing director Nick Bennett. “DCS had supplied us with dust plant in the past and we brought them in to discuss our changing needs. After carrying out a full appraisal, DCS recommended a modern extraction plant controlled by their Ecogate system. This system would satisfy our extraction needs and cut electricity bills by providing the optimum amount of power to meet demand.” For the contract, DCS installed an externallysited NFSZ modular unit, fitted with highperformance ‘Superbag’ polyester filter bags. It has an airflow capacity of 14,500m3/hr and is capable of efficiently coping with varying

loads of wood dust and chips. Incorporated into the main ducting system is an ATEX-approved CARZ back-pressure flap valve which prevents the effects of a dust explosion from travelling back along ductwork. The compact filter plant is fitted with a rotary valve which discharges waste pressure-free into a closed loop conveying system that transfers the waste directly into a box cart. Additionally, an emergency bulk bag discharge system is included. Energy saving measures involved the installation of an integrated Ecogate greenBOX12 controller, in conjunction with an Ecogate PowerMaster variable speed drive, which automatically adjusts the speed of the main extraction fan as machines come on line or shut down – resulting in significant power savings over a traditional fixed-speed system. The result is a highly-efficient dust extraction system, which provides precise extraction volumes only when needed. It is expected that the Ecogate system will reduce power usage by around 60%. 0800 040 7116 DCSlimited.co.uk 01977 671886 industrialpalletservices.co.uk

Architectural joinery specialist Jeld-Wen is manufacturing timber windows, patio door frames and staircases at Melton Mowbray on a new layout at the factory and to link major joinery plant in line with Jeld-Wen management’s very high standards of waste management. Jeld-Wen is a world-class architectural joinery manufacturer seeking optimal energy efficiency and air quality in a new round-the-clock working environment. As one of Britain’s most forward thinking users of sustainable timber, Jeld-Wen management is also dedicated to optimal waste management and recycling efficiency and the maximisation of waste as a valuable bio-fuel resource. The old high-volume throughput working techniques of the 20th century are gone now at Jeld-Wen. They are increasingly manufacturing bespoke these days, or making ever smaller batch sizes, and are continually investing in more flexible machinery. Management is committed to maximisation of resources whenever and wherever it can, including working on a new 24 hour cycle. Dustraction’s Steve Matuska says: “At this project there are three main duct runs, each measuring a 1000mm in diameter and running externally for around 40 meters before entering the main building, at which point they disperse to pick up at an ever increasing variety of machines. The new cyclo-filter is our largest range model; the whole set-up is now a Class A balanced, quiet and efficient layout for rigid, vibration-free operation in order to shift around 14 tons of

wood waste daily at upwards of 160,000m³/hr. Waste is transported by three Dustrax No. 66 heavy-duty paddle-blade, vee-belt driven fans powered by 110kW motors and each incorporating a control panel with periodic soft starts to dislodge cake waste from the large capacity filter sleeves; these sleeves are circular to prevent excessive build up. Waste is then discharged directly to two 40ft trailers for recycling. Manufactured at their Oadby, Leicestershire, factory, cyclo-filters are big business for Dustraction. With 95% cyclone separation of large particulate matter before even reaching the filters and involving no moving parts, cyclofilters are virtually zero maintenance and are guaranteed for 6,000 hours operation – or for three years of continuous, round-the-clock use. Emissions are guaranteed at or below 0.2mg/ m3 using tubular filters in heavy filter-fabric and reducing the risk of bridging and blocking through caked dust. Cleaning is by pulsed jets of compressed air; Dustraction’s filter tubes are cleaned automatically and boast collection efficiencies of 99.99% enabling full recirculation of filtered air back into the factory environment. Dustraction’s reverse air pulsing mechanism ensures superior collection efficiency and is used throughout many industrial sectors where heavy dust burdens are handled on a continuous basis. The system is low in energy use, high in filtration efficiency and designed for 24/7 operation. The Jeld-Wen legend began in Oregon in the United States in 1960 and the Group now employs 20,000 people worldwide; the UK

Rosindales buy unbeatable Turanlar edgebander from CDE Machinery Rosindales is a Bradford-based company boasting a significant package of manufacturing skills built up over many years. The company has an extensive range of machinery and last year it decided that to meet increasing customer demand it needed to invest in a larger edgebander, capable of producing quality on a regular and long-term basis. Turanlar T-EB601 to Rosindales specification

The usual suspects, new and secondhand, were investigated but Rosindales kept coming back to the Turanlar range offered by CDE Machinery. Turanlar, a third generation family company manufacturing woodworking machinery in their modern factory near Ankara in Turkey, offers edgebanders to meet the needs of all those wishing to apply up to 3mm edging – perhaps 85% of the market. Turanlar’s machines are heavy duty, reliable and equipped with electrics, motors, electronics and

FP272.7_pages.indd 30

pneumatics from Italy, France and Germany. CDE Machinery’s Nigel Smith points out: “Of particular significance, is that they will be installed on the customer’s site by us, with training and a 12-month warranty included for between 25% and 40% less than similar machines from Germany or Italy. The result is a quicker payback, increased productivity, enhanced profits and a more secure business.” Rosindales’ Sharon Rosindale explains: “While we’ve known CDE Machinery for many years, and trust their judgement, an investment

as crucial as this required us to research the market. However, we decided that the Turanlar 601 ticked all the boxes and we are delighted to have acquired this superb machine that is unbeatable value.” Rosindales offer a manufacturing service to the flooring industry, the retail, hotel and leisure sectors – and for exhibition and POS needs. The company will produce bedroom and kitchen furniture and all that is required to fit out student accommodation. In addition to product from Rosindales’ edgebanders; routing,

sawing, dowelling and tenoning is available as is a complete design and proto-typing service from its team of experienced staff. Turanlar edgebanders from CDE Machinery start at less than £10,000 and the flagship T-EB601 – as installed at Rosindales – comes with more than 10 options. All machines have a 12 month warranty. His most recent investment has been in a finishing line, a lipping machine, a saw and an OMC press. The press, purchased with the assistance of Brian Bourne of Sawtec and Carl O’Meara of J & C O’Meara Ltd, has proved to be particularly beneficial. Hi-Tec Joinery was established in June 2002, for the production and supply of certified fire doors, linings and screens – all the commercial markets. Quickly outgrowing its first site, the company has twice moved to larger premises, most recently in 2012. The company supplies doors and screens to schools,

FP272.7_pages.indd 32

universities and colleges; hospitals, care homes and surgeries; as well as refurbished offices or new premises for blue chip companies. The fire doors are certified under the BM TRADA QMark scheme and are tested to BS 476: Part 22 Fire Doors. For the new press, Ian had investigated a series of possibilities with Brian Bourne, with whom he has a long standing relationship, and with Carl. “I have been round a number of door manufacturers over the years, and they all have different equipment. We were presented with a series of options, and the OMC suited us best,” says Ian. “We have a long, narrow building, so to fit in all the new machinery, it was essential that the press could be end fed. The OMC meets this requirement.” Ian’s policy is to invest in equipment that will produce the best possible results, and the OMC

press certainly lives up to this. Ian is delighted with the quality of the pressing. The press is used mostly for pressing veneers onto door core. Hi-Tec doors are available in a range of veneers, including walnut, cherry, maple, beech, oak, ash, koto, eucalyptus and sapele. The company also supplies a full range of laminate faces from all the main manufacturers, including Formica and Polyrey. The through-feed press selected by Ian comes with an automatic loading belt with a panel grabbing device. The grabbing device receives the panel from the glue spreader and brings it to the automatic loading belt, which is fully synchronised with the Mylar belt inside the press. Outside the press there is a photocell which detects the dimensions of the panel to press, ensuring that the machine will press only in the area scanned by the photocell, avoiding damage to platens and panels that may occur when the whole area is routinely pressed. Constructed in Italy from Fe 430 beams assembled and welded together, the press is equipped with a rack and pinion guide system for perfect parallel movement while the press platen is closing or opening. The 3000mm x 1400mm platens are of solid steel construction, bored and heated by diathermic oil to a maximum temperature of 120° C. Insulating material is installed between the press and the platen, and the platen is hooked to structure of the press by means of tie rods, allowing for thermal

expansion. The hydraulic system is composed of a double stage oil submerged pump, designed both to reduce noise and to improve lubrication of the rotating parts. The main control board is supplied complete with a digital Logic Control that allows the setting of the working temperature; the working pressure with automatic recovery of pressure; pressing time; pressing cycle setting; platens opening; and a choice of a manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic cycle. Movement within the press is from top to bottom. The total pressure is 160 tonnes, with a specific pressure on 80% of the surface of 5 kg/cm2. To ensure operator safety, the opening is controlled by the timer set on the main control board, and the press comes complete with security rope and grids on all four sides. After pressing, panels are automatically unloaded onto a foldaway rolls conveyor. Asked if he would recommend the OMC press, Ian replies: “Yes.” It fits well with his policy of investing in the best available equipment to produce the best possible results. THE WORLD’S #1 WOODWORKING CAM SOFTWARE Alphacam is a completely integrated CAD/CAM software solution designed to offer your business enhanced productivity, exceptional reliability and additional flexibility. Alphacam is the industry standard and system of choice for programming CNC routers, providing significant material and time savings.

Alphacam slashes Wensley Group’s staircase time A shopfitting company has doubled the output of its CNC router, driven by Alphacam, in the last two years. The Wensley Group provides a bespoke design, manufacturing and installation service to the retail, leisure, education and healthcare sectors, manufacturing shop counters, pub bars and backfittings, staircases, doors and windows. While Alphacam CAD/CAM software plays a part in the design and production process for around 95% of its jobs, CNC programmer Mark Greening says it really comes into its own on five-axis staircase work: “Even straightforward staircases can be quite complex on the CNC machine, but the bigger and more complex-shaped ones with features such as curves, tangents and scrolls, would be almost impossible without Alphacam. “If the shopfloor were to make even a simple, straight flight of stairs manually, it would take between three and four days. Using Alphacam I can do it in half a day.” When Mark joined the West Midlands company around two years ago, neither its Alphacam Ultimate nor the five-axis 36-tool Reichenbacher CNC router which it drives, were being deployed effectively. “I invested time in developing how we used the machine and getting the tooling right. We’re still improving on that, but Alphacam gives us the confidence to try anything on it,” says Mark. Five-axis work is becoming increasingly important, and Mark says the complexity of the shapes and curved handrails that he produces with Alphacam has surprised a number of people at the company. “Some of the designs we’re asked to work with are virtually impossible to make any other way. “Everything I do goes through Alphacam, starting with designing the products, through to them coming off the router.” Mark utilises many of Alphacam’s extensive CAD features, from a very basic aspect of drawing a line, to creating a surface. “When I’ve finished the design I move on to programming with the CAM operation. We work with a selection of tools, and because everything’s done onscreen I can run a simulation to see what works and what

FP272.7_pages.indd 36

doesn’t, before we come to the machining stage. Alphacam shows us if the product we want to cut is fully machineable. “We can receive the work as a copy of a drawing which I then redraw in Alphacam, or the client may send a full architectural drawing where I simply break it down into the components and program them in Alphacam, or I may be asked to draw something entirely from scratch based on the client’s idea.” Even after the program has been sent to the machine there may be occasions when it needs to be amended. “All we do is switch the toolpaths off and change the lines where necessary without having to redraw or reprogram it.” He says many of their staircases have handrails that are twisted as well as curved, which are readily produced in Alphacam using polylines, splines and surfaces. “A lot of them need to be drawn almost freehand to produce what’s needed for the machining, and it would be quite difficult to do using a solid model package.” Retail contracts often call for a complete shopfitting service involving counters, point-ofsale stands and window displays... and with pub refurbishments requiring bars and the full back-fitting, Wensley Group uses a wide range of materials, including ply, MDF, hardwoods, softwoods, Tricoya panels and Corian. Mark prefers to go on-site to personally measure up,

ensuring his Alphacam drawings are accurate first time. “If I’m given a full architectural drawing instead, I’ll break it down into all its component parts – tops, fronts, sides – right down to the skirtings, so every component goes on to the Alphacam drawing, ready for programming with the toolpaths.” As Wensley Group’s work is almost entirely bespoke he is constantly called upon to produce different jobs, all with different components, so he says each job has its own unique challenge. “But being able to draw it in Alphacam and get everything right on screen first is absolutely invaluable. The software is now an integral part of our production process,” says Mark. Always using the most up-to-date Alphacam release keeps the group at the forefront of CAD/ CAM technology, which he says is vital to get the best out of the Reichenbacher router. And on the rare occasion it needs guidance on an issue the Alphacam support team is always quick to resolve it. “One piece of five-axis code wouldn’t work on the machine, so I sent the program to Alphacam through their support portal and they altered our post processor. We were back up and running with a perfect program just a few hours later,” concludes Mark. verosoftware.com alphacam.com wensleygroup.co.uk

from above. Tall items, such as bottles can be easily removed from above. Another advantage is that users do not have to pull open the weight of the entire cabinet to remove one item – just open the required pull-out. When using high, closed drawer sides, up to 55% more storage space can be created. In addition, each Space Tower inner pull-out has a load-bearing capacity of up to 70kg. Thanks to integrated, softclose Blumotion, the pull-outs will always close softly and effortlessly. Optionally, they can also be equipped with a Servo-Drive electric motion support system. To implement handle-less kitchens, simply equip doors with the TipOn mechanical opening support system. Easy assembly All the fittings used for the Space Tower larder unit are either standard fittings from the Tandembox range – Blum’s tried and tested pull-out system – or standard fittings from the Legrabox range – its new box system with straight drawer sides. This ensures that the entire kitchen

The larder unit gives clear visibility and direct access from all three sides, and above has a coherent design and yet provides plenty of scope for the design of cabinet interiors. As far as assembly is concerned, the cutting dimensions of the base and back panel of both box systems stay the same. Fronts are simply clipped on. In addition, users are free to choose the desired front. Blum’s Dynalog planning software makes it easy to determine the exact fixing

positions of fittings. The software also helps to order the right fittings components for the Space Tower larder unit quickly and simply. And now, Space Tower has been made even easier to specify, thanks to the new “one box order” system, which provides the top of the range Legrabox free in stainless steel solution. 01908 285700 blum.com

New sliding solutions from Hettich

N

Sliding doors have always made sense for storage – whether a kitchen is large or small, a sliding door is ideal for unobstructed access from all angles. However the feel and functionality of good quality soft close and/or push-to-open hinged doors is tough to beat. But when Germany’s highly respected manufacturer of kitchen fittings decides that sliding is more than a niche solution, then the status quo is always likely to be challenged. Hettich’s new sliding door systems were fitted on several displays at KBB this year, and caused quite a stir. Change is in the air. Latest sliding door systems Hettich’s latest sliding door mechanisms are easy to fit and adjust, discreet and a pleasure to operate. They come into their own particularly thanks to the trend for merging food preparation, eating and living spaces. The ability to reveal the kitchen’s functional and storage areas when in use and hide them when they’re not is a strong selling point for sliding doors. Also, as manufacturers pay more attention to the internal look of their cabinets through lighting and decors, and end users become more inclined to display their glassware for example, then a sliding door which conceals part of the cabinet while leaving the rest as display shelving is an attractive choice. Hettich launched the one-track Slideline M this year with this scenario in mind. SlideLine M can be used for wooden, aluminium-framed and glass doors. Other options from Hettich’s comprehensive

sliding range include the Interzum Award-winning InLine S, which has just been launched in the UK, and offers flush closing of adjacent sliding doors, for a clean minimalist look, keeping everything out of site until it’s needed, and easy access to internal drawers, shelving and other storage solutions. Soft close is offered as with all Hettich’s sliding door systems. hettich.com

Halve cabinet assembly time with Titus FastFit technology for factory insertion of cams and dowels Titus FastFit is a solution for factory insertion of cams and dowels, that reduces by 50% the time needed to assemble the cabinet carcass at home. With the Lama FastFit machine the standard Titus cam and Quickfit TL dowel can be inserted in furniture sides in the factory. Pre-inserted connectors considerably shorten the time needed to assemble furniture with less parts, an easier assembly procedure and less risk of missing parts. The Titus Fast Fit solution comprises Titus cam, Quickfit TL2 dowel and the Lama FastFit machine. The Quickfit TL dowel is the only connector at the market allowing for factory insertion. Due to its specific shape it remains securely in the hole during the transport. Its self-adjustment feature provides the edge-to-hole-centre tolerance of +/-1mm which helps overcoming the drilling inaccuracies. The 2 o’clock lock feature enables a smooth, confident and consumer friendly tightening of the cam. Factory inserted connectors

The Lama FastFit machine used for automated insertion of cams and dowels works with standard furniture boards. The machinery is of standard modular construction and can be fully integrated into the existing panel processing lines or used on a stand-alone basis. Consequently, installation can be highly flexible and tailored to specific customer needs in terms of type of connectors to be inserted, panel sizes and throughput rates. The Titus FastFit is result of Titus CAF – Consumer Assembly Friendliness – philosophy within which Titus provides furniture connectors solutions that facilitate home assembly of furniture with less parts, less different parts and less actions to assemble. While offering advantages to furniture consumers there are obvious advantages also for furniture manufacturers – buying, counting, stocking and bagging of fittings can be greatly reduced. itusplus.com

The answer to faster tee nut insertion Think how a business would benefit from a faster application of tee nuts – the Sigma tee nut machine delivers those improvements in speed, costs and quality. Nottinghamshire based firm, Jet Press, is the sole UK supplier of Sigma tee nut machines and has the expertise to provide the machine that is right for all businesses. The Sigma tee nut machine system can speed up the insertion process without losing any of the precision and craftsmanship that is expected by customers. Jet Press says that the insertion of tee nuts can be consistently deeper and straighter with these proven machines. The tee nuts are automatically fed by a vibrating hopper bowl which ensures that they are uniformly positioned into the track leading into the machine, ready for insertion. The machine is triggered by a footswitch which leaves the operator’s hands free to safely hold the timber in place. The standard insertion machine is capable of up to 2000 insertions an hour, making a considerable difference to the productivity for any volume furniture producer. Speed is not the only benefit; Jet Press says the consistent accuracy achieved by the machine far surpasses that of a manual insertion process. Sigma’s rivet tee nut machines add further enhancement by combining insertion and riveting in one operation. In addition to the benefits of the standard tee nuts, rivet nuts add a far greater push-out resistance which can

FP272.7_pages.indd 46

eliminate secondary processes from many applications. Also, the flared barrel allows an easier lead-in when applying a bolt which can speed up assembly. Many of Jet Press’ customers have utilised this technology to streamline production whilst increasing the quality of the finished product. A well-known furniture producer has purchased a number of these machines and recently commented: “These machines have revolutionised our production; we can get through the same amount of Tee nut insertions in around half the time of manual insertion. The accuracy of the machines has also reduced our rejects and returns by a significant amount.” There are two additional options available; a drill-drive option which combines the drilling and insertion of the tee nut in a single operation and a drill-drive-rivet option which features a sophisticated computer controlled machine to drill the timber and then insert and rivet all in one operation. An alternative table top machine achieves up to 1000 insertions per hour and is designed to suit low- to mid-volume applications. Manually fed with an adjustable air pressure setting to vary the depth of insertion, the machine can be mounted to any sturdy workbench or can be supplied with an optional stand. Each machine has safety systems for the peace of mind of both operator and factory management and is delivered and installed by Jet Press. Operator and maintenance training is also

carried out when a new machine is installed. Jet Press’ maintenance engineers are available for call-out and servicing and the company endeavours to keep replacement machine parts in stock to ensure reliable and efficient aftersales service. “No-one in the UK knows these machines better,” says Jet Press’ sales and marketing director Andrew Mitchell. “We have a wide range of imperial and metric thread sizes and lengths in stock to suit various applications. We will gladly demonstrate how a Sigma tee nut machine can improve your production efficiency,” adds Andrew.

“Seeing the process first hand is always the best way to convince yourself of the savings to be made in both time and money. A close up inspection of the quality of insertion is a must, which can be best seen by holding the wood, directly after the machine has done its work. “A demonstration video can be viewed on our website www. jetpress/teenutmachine and our You Tube channel. Our sales team can also visit your production facility to discuss your specific requirements and advise on the best solution for your application.” 01623 551 800 jetpress.com

48 TRAINING, SERVICING & MAINTENANCE

www.furnitureproduction.net

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has highlighted incompetent trainers and inadequate training as key factors in many workplace accidents. Unfortunately, it’s often only after such accidents that employers find out how good their training provider really is.

Know your training provider

When accidents happen, employers are responsible for showing they have provided appropriate training for their employees. Their training organisation may also have to prove their abilities to third parties, such as the HSE. Therefore it’s vital that companies research their training providers thoroughly and only use those which comply with health and safety regulations. When choosing the right training provider, the HSE advises employers to make sure their external training provider has: a clear understanding of the company’s needs; staff to have at least five years’ proven industrial experience; relevant experience and teaching qualifications or professional accreditation; adequate insurance and practical courses that meet agreed requirements. Martin James, commercial director, Didac Ltd, comments: “Employers need to make sure they get the right training for their organisation from an approved training provider with the relevant

FP272.7_pages.indd 48

qualifications. “There is nothing to stop individuals or companies deciding to provide training in wood machining, but often they don’t have the right qualifications, or suitable industrial experience, nor offer adequate quality checks. Equally, a supplier who specialises in machine commissioning is unlikely to provide the required foundation training on classical machinery. “Training providers, whether colleges or independents like Didac, who deliver training programmes to the wood sector, should have a range of programmes in place. These could include qualifications from an awarding body such as City and Guilds, Occupational Awards or PIABC. Providers that are subject to quality inspections by Ofsted should bring a degree of confidence to the employer. “All training should meet health and safety requirements, and managers and supervisors should also be included in appropriate training sessions, to keep them up-to-date with supervisory responsibilities. Ask for testimonials

from previous customers to back up the provider’s claims. Didac’s credentials as a safe training provider One of three organisations that currently look after the wood sector development, Occupational Awards is an awarding organisation that helps champion high quality industrial skills. Lisa Williamson, managing director of Occupational Awards, says: “We have seen first-hand the depth and scope of Didac’s training provision. One of our key performance indicators is feedback from employers and Didac gets consistently good reviews.” Partners Didac works with many organisations, but are pleased to partner with the following in providing high quality training provision to their clients and members: British Woodworking Federation, Advanced Machinery Services, Proskills and National Association of Shopfitters. didac.co.uk

Leading industry provider Daltons Wadkin has seen demand for its certificated operator training courses increase exponentially over the past 12 months.

Machine smarter, train smarter

Now with a dedicated training department and expanding red team of trainers, Daltons Wadkin continues to offer tailored courses to new and experienced operators across a range of sectors including general joinery, saw mills, prison service, DIY chain stores and kitchen/cabinet manufacturers, helping companies ‘Train Smarter to Machine Smarter.’ Nigel Layton is the latest addition to the red team of operator trainers. To say Nigel is keen about training would be an understatement. “I first realised how much I love helping others learn when I started coaching a local youth football

team some years ago,” enthuses Nigel. “I had spent a long time in the woodworking industry and even ran my own business before joining Daltons Wadkin. Being able to relate to operators puts them on your side which is half the battle in teaching, especially in such a specialised industry.” “We have very strict selection criteria when it comes to appointing new trainers,” comments company director Alex Dalton. “Each candidate must have a minimum of 10 years hands on experience operating woodworking machinery, with a natural aptitude for teaching. Each of our trainers undertakes a CIEH level 3 course

Under the slogan: Tools As New, leading tooling manufacturer, supplier and service specialist Leitz Tooling is putting the quality of its tool servicing at the forefront.

Tools – good as new

As the largest supplier of tooling to British manufacturing, all Leitz tools are safety tested to BS EN 847 standards. From using the right tool for the right job for the best results, to the impact of poor or undermaintained tooling on noise, health and safety, finish quality or helping customers maximise their profitability. Leitz’s product spectrum includes the entire range of machine-driven precision tooling for machining solid wood, manufactured wood products and plastics and customers range from industrial manufacturers to small workshops in every manufacturing sector, be it window and timber construction, panel processing, advanced materials or furniture making. “We hear about all sorts of different production and manufacturing issues, from a poor finish right through to noise,” says Leitz Tooling national sales manager, Brian Maddox. “In many cases, the solution can be as simple as the tooling.” Leitz Tooling hears this from customers time and time again. “Looking at your true production cost per widget, product or panel can really help identify what potential issues might be. If you’re changing saw blades twice a shift, having to check for clogging up or have expensive rectification issues, take a closer look at the tooling and servicing you’re using.”

FP272.7_pages.indd 50

Precision service Leitz believes that when serviced tools leaving one of their services centres, they should be ‘as new’. Each of their service processes have been optimised for original producer quality. Cutting edge service techniques enable Leitz to give likenew performance throughout the lifetime of the tool, and reliable pick-up and delivery is tailored to the demands of the customer. Derek Statham, Leitz Tooling National Service Manager said, “Even the best quality tool can only maintain its optimum performance if it is regularly maintained by specialists. At each of our eight UK service centres, we pride ourselves knowing that our attention to detail, in-house training and cutting-edge equipment gives the customer the best result time and time again.” Leitz uses the same machinery and programmes for their tool service that they use for their tool production thus providing the best possible quality therefore giving the customer consistent tool performance. Run the numbers The cost-effectiveness of a tool increases proportionally with the number of times it is resharpened. Not only is the number of service lives important, the consistency of the tool life is important too. All customers want is extended production runs, reduced down time, improved

surface quality and less wasted material to increase their profits. For a true comparison, Leitz suggest businesses factor in the cost and frequency of their tooling servicing, the cost of downtime and running the business. Brian Maddox said, “The results are different for each business but customers continue to prove to us that buying cheap inferior tools is a huge drain on their businesses. With our tooling and support, they can get the right finish on the material first time, and in many cases save extraordinary amounts of money. Companies can become fixated on the purchase price of tools, but correct, quality tools can have a positive impact on other costs. Quality service back up and monitoring are also crucial to reducing overall costs.” Diamond Leitz From a material profile sample or sketch, Leitz Tooling is now manufacturing polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tipped tools in-house. Derek Statham, Leitz Tooling UK’s national service and works manager, says: “Our modular design for shank tools solves most router machining needs reliably, quickly and economically, with ground shanks to a tolerance engineered for utilising in shrink technology. Our customers are already seeing the benefits of the efficiency of high quality diamond as a cutting material, the low-

price and fast delivery of this new service.” The tool’s performance can be further enhanced when used together with Leitz’s thermal Shrink-Fit system which, by eliminating the need for collet system, makes tools essentially ‘mono-bloc’ ensuring even tooth wear, longer tool life and enhanced workpiece surface finish. By selecting the optimum PCD grade for the respective application, Leitz produce tooling with exacting quality standards dedicated to the customer’s requirements. A re-sharpening area of 3mm gives on average nine+ lives further proving value and cost efficiency. Full support for the life of Leitz tools (cradle to grave) Leitz Tooling customer service and relationship building is at the heart of the company. When companies work with Leitz, they tap into its unrivalled knowledge base. Leitz offers service and support for the life for every tool and system it manufactures, and the support does not stop there. Leitz offers tooling and production troubleshooting consultations at every exhibition, with the next at W16 at the NEC on stand D410. For the last three years, the company has run a series of seminars across the country on A+ energy rated future-proof timber window production demonstrating Leitz’s ThermoTech Window System. Leitz undertakes full factory tooling audits and tooling reviews for manufacturers looking to increase profitability, invest in new machinery, or simply to ensure that all their tooling is compliant in advance of the Health & Safety Executive’s increased scrutiny on all woodworking manufacturers. The company runs bespoke customer seminars at their Harlow head office on a weekly basis to keep their customers up to date with the latest manufacturing techniques to help improve production throughput and product quality. Leitz Tooling invites manufacturers in all sectors of wood processing to contact them about production problems, and how its service and tooling can help. 01279 454530 salesuk@leitz.org leitz-tooling.co.uk shopuk.leitz.org

54 SANDING

www.furnitureproduction.net

The calibrating-sanding machine Sandya 900 is an ideal choice for medium to large industrial companies that require diversified machining with a high level of finishing quality.

Sandya 900 – high performance sanding to be more competitive Following the success of the Sandya 300 and 600 models, aimed at the small and medium-size woodworking businesses, SCM has increased its range of wide-belt sanders with a new machine designed and produced to provide versatility and a high rate of production and a quality finish. Sandya 900 accommodates all calibrating and sanding requirements, by offering a wide range of technological solutions with the possibility of customising the machine compositions. The availability of offering many types of operating units such as planing units, roller units (with 175, 220, 250 and 320mm diameters), pad units and superfinishing units, guarantees optimum results on solid wood elements, MDF panels ready for veneer finishing and painted (matt or gloss finishes) or veneered panels. The superfinishing unit ensures a uniform finish and sanding at the best level thanks to the chevron belt which improves cooling of the abrasive action on the work piece and the copying capacity of the MESAR electronic pad. An integrated electro-fan provides extreme compactness and noise emission reduction.

The programming work has become simpler and effective with the Logic TS – the control with LCD display and touch-screen function allows complete and safe control of the machine, easily and intuitively. The possibility to store up to 120 work programs to save and select the machine settings most commonly used, makes it perfect even for unskilled operators. Further key features are a heavy stock removal during the calibrating operation due to the wide availability of motor powers (up to 22kW) for each operating unit; it is easy-to-use with the worktable at a fixed height from the floor to allow the combining of a machine with systems for loading/unloading and movement of the work piece. SCM also points out that the 2620mm abrasive belt length is ideal for perfect finishing and maximum productivity, plus there is the possibility to equip the machine with grain evidencing or buffing units to carry out particular finishing operations, such as rustic or weathered effects. 0115 977 0044 scmgroup.me.uk

For almost 70 years, the Bütfering brand has stood for high performance wide-belt sanding machines and innovative surface finishing.

The all new Bütfering SWT 200 Series sanding machines – compact high performance The all new Bütfering SWT 200 Series carries on that tradition offering highly flexible and compact sanding solutions. Machines in the range efficiently perform calibration and fine sanding of solid wood and wooden materials as well as veneer and lacquer sanding up to full panel widths of 1350mm. The Bütfering SWT 200 Series models are all constant pass line machines which means the feed table height is constant providing a more heavy-duty and reliable solution. Each machine in the range is controlled via a 7” colour touchscreen with a user-friendly graphic interface. As with all Bütfering machines the attention to detail is extremely high, for example, the machines have earthing straps to eliminate static which can have a negative impact on dust extraction and sanding performance. Advanced work piece thickness measuring The machines all feature automatic thickness adjustment from 3 to 200mm (previously 150mm) and a constant working height (900mm) via adjustment of the upper frame of the machine. Work pieces are fed into the machine on a variable speed (3-15m/min), high quality multiply conveyor belt. The parts are guided through the machine with spring-loaded rubberised pressure rollers positioned close to the sanding heads. Comprehensive selection of head types The SWT 200 Series offers a choice of four heads which can be specified in single and twin head configurations to give seven different machine types. All the heads feature a simplified head locking system which enables quick and simple changing of sanding belts. Designed for flat surfaces, the combination

L-Head uses a contact roller for calibration and an air cushion sanding pad system (acp) for fine sanding applications. This pneumatic pressure pad system delivers the right pressure over the entire working width. In the same way, the combination C-Head also features a contact roller for calibration but with the addition of the electronic pneumatic pad system (eps) for sanding. The machines’ electronics ensure the optimum sanding pressure on all areas of a work piece. The pressure pad consists of separate segments which are applied to match the work piece shape. Offering thickness tolerance compensation of up to 2mm, the system is perfect for intermediate and fine sanding of solid wood, along with veneer and lacquer sanding. The R-Head has been designed for calibration and preparation of surfaces to provide a mechanical key for glueing. It is very efficient with high stock removal rates whilst avoiding the so called ‘wash-out’ effect. Oscillation marks are a thing of the past A new addition is the inclusion of an H-Head which leaves no oscillation (snake) marks and sands at lower temperatures

FP272.7_pages.indd 56

to increase the lifetime of the sanding belt. Featuring a chevron belt, the H-Head delivers a smooth and extremely consistent surface finish making it most suitable for veneer, lacquer and filler sanding. It also offers a wide range of useful grit sizes up to P1200 grit. Quick change brush system A useful option for the SWT 200 series is the quick change cassette brush system with cleaning and texturing brushes available. The glazing brush is recommended to smooth and to emphasise pores on lacquered surfaces whilst the wire brushes create that in vogue weathered or distressed look. “Yet again, with the SWT 200 Series, Bütfering has come up with a great range of machines,” claims Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for HOMAG UK. He continues, “Whilst it may not look that different from the outside, the engineers at Bütfering have started with a clean sheet to ensure that every little detail of this powerful wide-belt sander is perfect. “Taking this fresh approach has enabled them to create a flexible, reliable, high quality sander all within a very compact footprint. The range and combinations of heads to choose from allows every machine to be tailored to each customer’s specific needs and I am certain demand for this SWT 200 Series will be high,” concludes Brooks. To arrange a demonstration of one of the new Bütfering SWT 200 Series sanding machines, call Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. 01332 856500 homag-uk.co.uk

When Hammonds Furniture Limited was looking to streamline its production processes, the company looked to tesa® for its industry knowledge and expertise.

tesa mirrors success for Hammonds Furniture Manufacturers of fitted bedroom, home office furniture for private individuals, new homes and retail, the Hinckleybased company felt that tesa products could play a major role in implementing process improvements and cost savings. tesapeople Applying the principles from its tesacohesion™ customer care programme, tesa’s customer team met with relevant departments to ascertain Hammonds’ specific objectives and initially identified the need to offer a proven method of fixing mirrors to painted and laminated board. The tape had to take the weight and strain of handling on various board substrates right through the manufacturing process to final assembly and the finished item would need to stay intact and functional for +10 years. tesaproducts The tesacohesion team conducted a series of tests using its double-sided PE foam backed tapes to prove product performance and durability on all the substrates involved in the required operating conditions. The initial tests focused on creating data showing peel adhesion and static shear strength under various conditions and the results were excellent. This led to more detailed tests to determine how tesa® 4952 performed when exposed to high temperature and humidity and the tesa product passed with flying colours. In addition to addressing mirror mounting applications, tesa also identified other areas where improvements could be made, including the use of tesa® 4965 for bonding and building door assemblies, which the company has now adopted.

tesaprocesses Graham Dales, Hammonds’ quality engineer, is delighted with the results. “As well as seeing a cost saving of £6500 per annum, we have improved the manufacturing process, mainly by using less tape in an improved pattern, which has led to a reduction in process time and streamlined our operation. We are also now using tesa products in other areas of the business, including sliding door applications, framed mirror doors and even in our packaging process.” tesaperformance tesa’s Mat Lord summarises: “Following the detailed series of laboratory tests that we conducted, Hammonds now has renewed confidence in a tape-only method and tesa® 4952 is approved for all mirror and deco glass mounting applications. They have a solution with proven and tangible results and we have also helped with the lamination process that has been adopted in the factory.” tesa.co.uk

The b-tec 807 has been designed to use the widely available Ryobi 18V 1.5Ah lithium+ battery and charger, which can achieve recharge times of around 60 minutes. This battery includes an on-board four-stage fuel gauge to indicate how much charge is remaining, making it easier for users to know when a charge is required. It can also be used to run a range of Ryobi power tools. Knots and deep scratches in wood can be filled quickly and easily using a special knot-filling adhesive developed by the company, with the help of a 12mm hot melt glue gun like the b-tec 807. The system also includes a pair of handy heatsink blocks that can be used to create a form around any knot holes that go through, or are on the edge of, areas of wood that need repair. Once the damaged area has been filled, the knottec knot-filling adhesive takes just minutes to cool before the excess can be trimmed with a flush plane tool, such as the Mouseplane. The repaired area can then be sanded, painted or treated as normal, achieving a highquality finish to the restored wood. Because it’s so tough, knottec is perfect for repairs to things like wooden doors, window frames, furniture, floors, and more. This knotfilling adhesive is also available in six different colours to help users achieve the best colour match possible.

The b-tec 807 is ideal for knots and deep scratches Below: The Power Adhesives HQ in Basildon, Essex

Power Adhesives offers a choice of two additional mains-powered 12mm glue guns for use with the knottec system – the light industrial tec 305 and the professional tec 820 – as well as the Mouseplane tool for trimming away excess glue. Cost-effective knottec kits containing everything users need to get started in a practical carry case are also available. Power Adhesives manufactures the largest range of industrial glue guns and high performance shaped hot melt adhesives. Its products are sold through a network of specialist distributors around the world under the tec and tecbond brand names. With over 40 years’ industry experience, Power Adhesives is able to offer expert help on all aspects of commercial gluing operations using thermoplastic adhesives. A continuous programme of research and development ensures that the company continue to meet the ever changing needs of industry, including the knottec system. 01268 885801 sales@poweradhesives.com poweradhesives.com The b-tec 807 uses a Ryobi 18Ah battery and charger

Timbmet’s solid walnut timber has been used to create a dramatic staircase for a multi-million pound new-build private home in Radlett, Hertfordshire.

Timbmet makes an entrance: solid walnut creates classy residential staircase Built by Relic Homes, Aranee Lodge is a 6400ft2, six-bedroom family residence, complete with formal reception rooms and a cinema room, as well as a master bedroom suite featuring a vaulted ceiling. Such a prestigious home deserves a suitably impressive entrance hall, and that is exactly the design-led solution which Timbmet and its customer, bespoke furniture maker M L Elliott, have achieved. The walnut entrance hall has been created using a stylish contemporary design and a mix of Timbmet’s solid walnut timber in combination with veneered MDF, moisture-resistant flexi-ply and flexible veneers in walnut. The result is a sleek, streamlined, welcoming entrance area bathed in light from the glass atrium above the central curved staircase. To ensure the staircase would be a major focal point of this residence, Relic Homes appointed Melbourne Elliott, who has worked with the housebuilder on various projects for several years. Having specified Timbmet timber for many jobs in the past, Melbourne had no hesitation in choosing a selection of Timbmet walnut for this project.

“I chose Timbmet primarily because of the quality of the materials and the product knowledge of the staff,” he explains. “In my experience working with the company, I have never encountered any problems and they have always delivered the goods.” The design of the staircase at Aranee Lodge brought together several elements – a challenging combination of timber and curved glass. Given the complexity of the project, the work took eight weeks from start to finish. “Most of the work was carried out on site,” Melbourne continues. “Once the design was completed and approved, and the timber ordered, manufactured and delivered, the project began with the installation of a metal casement staircase to provide the base and shape. Then the timber staircase was built and installed in various stages: the curved strings and the curved landing were made along with the walnut treads and risers, followed by the hand veneering of the face side of the stair string and landing. “All of the materials used in combination ensured the strength and stability required for the

shape and curve of the staircase itself, as well as the flexibility to ensure good performance with the curved glass,” he concludes. “The contrast between the matt finish timber and the glass has resulted in a successful blend of traditional warmth and contemporary design.” Since this staircase was completed late in 2014, Melbourne says all of the components have settled in well. “If every job went as well as this one did, it would be a godsend.” He has been back to see for himself on several occasions as he is currently building a walnut library within this home, and once again he has specified Timbmet timber. Given Timbmet’s extensive stockholding of timber and veneers, M L Elliott had plenty of species and

FP272.7_pages.indd 68

finishes to choose from, and when walnut was eventually specified, the materials required were readily available for quick despatch. This project demonstrates Timbmet’s position as a one-stop-shop for timber and related products, as well as the in-depth knowledge and expertise of its team. All Timbmet products are responsibly sourced and certified, with sawn timber orders handpicked by highly trained staff. For extra customer service, the company offers a full range of machining and manufacturing services, while its national network of distribution centres and local depots, as well as its online ordering facility, ensure fast, efficient delivery. timbmet.com

Timber business become greener and leaner One of the few ‘green’ sawmills in the UK is proud to have reduced its heating and waste disposal costs by installing biomass heaters from Wood Waste Technology. Great Barr Sawmills is an independent, family-owned timber yard supplying hardwood, softwood, plywood, doors and skirting with over 65 years of experience in the trade. The business was started by director, Jamie Jones’ great grandfather in 1949, and then passed to his grandfather, and is now run by Jamie and his dad. It operates from a large, bright red building on a 1.2 acre site in Great Barr, and employs around 20 staff. After the company experienced various problems disposing of its wood waste via skips, the directors decided to find out more about biomass technology. Seeing the benefits for the business, Jamie has now purchased three biomass burners from Wood Waste Technology, giving each of the three buildings at Great Barr Sawmills its own wood waste heater. Jamie explains: “As our business grew, the costs of waste disposal

TMMJA.indd 1 FP272.7_pages.indd 70

kept increasing, and we reached a point where we were struggling to dispose of our wood and MDF waste, shavings and chippings through traditional methods, so had to look for alternative solutions.” Jamie discovered Wood Waste Technology’s website, and after finding out more information about the benefits, initially ordered a WT10 for the machine shop. The company also purchased an addon heat dump system to provide the flexibility to send the heat to the atmosphere, rather than into the factory in the warmer months. Then, on one very cold December day, when business circumstances required Jamie to spend time working in the timber shop rather than the office, he realised how cold it was for the guys who worked in there. As a result, Jamie was straight on the phone to Wood Waste Technology to order another WT10, and shortly after ordered another, a WT5 for the DIY shop. Now, instead of hiring a skip every few days, the company only needs one skip about every five weeks to dispose of the waste that can’t be used in the

heaters, significantly reducing the company’s bills. Jamie says: “As a small family business, the cost of energy bills could have put us in jeopardy, as we were spending around £20,000 on gas each year, plus the cost of service and maintenance for the seven gas heaters. Instead, we’ve looked at the big picture and re-invested in the business, by purchasing equipment that will help to keep the company moving forward. We’d hate to be without our wood waste heaters, as we think they’re fantastic – and the service we get from Wood Waste Technology is second to none.” As well as saving money and making it easier to dispose of the company’s wood waste, Jamie is delighted with the additional benefits of biomass. Always conscious of environmental impacts, he’s delighted that most of his waste now avoids landfill, and he has even invested in solar power for the business to help reduce the bills further, as the company now produces its own electricity. Jamie explains: “Our investment in biomass technology even helped our solar application, as it gave us a better overall energy rating. With our new solar panels, we’re now completely self-sustainable energy-wise, and are classed as a Grade A business on our Energy Performance Certificate, which is

31/05/2016 16:47

something we’re very proud of.“ MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “We’ve been delighted to help Great Barr Sawmills along its green and lean journey. We know Jamie is happy with the heaters as he’s kindly offered to allow businesses considering biomass to visit his premises and talk to him about his experiences.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk
