But this really only makes sense when the volumes are significant. But for smallJohn Legg Editorial director and medium-sized businesses, CNC technology has become a common solution to solve wide-ranging labour-intensive issues. From sawing, routing, inserting, edgebanding to 3D processing, measuring, separating storage, and other applications, CNC technology, whilst not a panacea, is certainly advantageous in so many situations. As the use of CNC technology deployment among furniture and joinery businesses continues to proliferate, CNC manufacturers continue to develop solutions for a range of needs, from entrylevel machines for small businesses with modest requirements to high volume production cells for heavily-automated panel-based furniture production. One of the upsides of the current raft of CNC development by machinery manufacturers is that it makes the market more competitive in the main. The entry price for CNC technology is becoming evermore affordable – and the payback times of that investment have come down to a very reasonable level, too.

Lawcris has broadened its capabilities by once again joining forces with their state-of-the-art technological favourites, Homag, welcoming two brand new pieces of machinery to its already-impressive collection.

Lawcris and Homag – inspiring creativity For over 30 years, the Creative CNC department at Lawcris has built an excellent reputation for its forward thinking and quality of work. Technology has always had a massive impact on how the business operates, therefore, buying the right CNCbased solutions continues to be key to improving efficiency and flexibility, as well as maintaining the high standards that Lawcris has set itself. Stuart Hall, Creative CNC general manager, recollects: “Over the years, we have learned that adopting the most efficient methods of production is critical. At the beginning, we started out with a steady and sure business with a skilled workforce, producing high quality machined components. “As our reputation grew, and more work came through the door, the traditional methods and old machinery that once worked well for us gradually slowed us down. Not wanting to waver on our high standards, vast investment into new machinery was crucial and after extensive planning, was fulfilled. “We provide three main areas of expertise in the CNC department that all work together as

CNCPages.indd 4

vital cogs in many of our customers’ projects. The multiple beam saws with office-based Magi-Cut software provide the maximum yield cutting facilities. Our edgebanding machines allow us to ensure superior edge appearances. “We also cater for the wide range of bespoke edging widths that sit alongside the trend for chunkier furniture and more bespoke thickness boards with our new slitting machine which enables the CNC department to keep up with the increased volume of tailored edging width demands. “Finally, we have the impressive CNC routers as well as the new additional Multiborer (coming soon) for all our drilling and routing requirements. This complements the increased demand we are seeing for cabinet work, incorporating panels with drilling for KD (knock down) fittings. “With recent investment into our new facilities and equipment, our capacity has more than doubled and we are finding our service to be incredibly useful for clients who wish to streamline their own manufacturing processes or rely on us as a useful buffer when their own capacity has been reached. We encourage our

28/03/2018 17:30

have always stood out with its supreme technological advances. Having made previous purchases with Homag, the rate of production has increased, and so has the trust in Homag’s ability, providing Lawcris with an unwavering incentive to stick with Homag in its two next major purchases. In May this year, Lawcris will see its halfa-million-pound investment realised with the arrival and installation of a new BHX500 multiborer with hedgehog feeder and Homag KAL370 single-sided edgebander with a PUR glue system.

Stuart goes on to say: “Supplier expertise is paramount to the success of any business and Homag definitely have the finest CNC technology, products, training and advice. We are looking forward to the immediate and dramatic benefits of these two new purchases.” With the facilities and knowledge to custommake all manner of components to a high standard, Lawcris’ strength in furniture manufacturing, industrial woodworking and commercial joinery industries will continue to flourish. lawcris.co.uk

Pioneering CNC specialist Maka introduced its new added value, high performance PM Modular CNC solution at Holzhandwerk in Nüremberg last month.

Maka launches new PM Modular – added value, with higher performance As the name suggests, the new model is modular, and features all the high performance functionality for high performance joinery processing, with improved price and performance. The company majors on providing uncompromising specialised solutions for improving the productivity for a wide variety of applications across industries, including milling and drilling automotive components in aluminium and composites, trimming plastics, and not least, for processing hardwood joinery and solid wood furniture, where the Maka PM270 and PE90 have gained an enviable reputation for intelligently configured production systems, which are remarkably flexible, easy to use, and robust. MD Iain Young explains: “As the range of applications and wealth of options have grown, so has the cost. With the PM Modular, we have stripped back the essential Maka, and reconfigured this special model with standardised options, to provide an all-round solution with a high level of flexibility and performance, and in the process have greatly improved the price. “It’s a natural progression to provide this alternative package, bundling the most soughtafter equipment variants, without compromising quality or performance.” The new model will be available with either a three-axis or five-axis head, or both, with the two aggregates combined. The three-axis head also features an additional vector axis for horizontal

drilling, and sawing etc. Maka’s own Power-Maka spindles will also feature as standard, providing greater power, flexibility, precision and speed, along with extremely long life. Thanks to Maka’s modern multi-channel technology, the two aggregates can operate in sync with minimal non-productive time, and work with one tool magazine. This not only saves space, and cost, but also the user’s tooling costs, as the spindles can share the same tooling. Moreover, the toolchange time is lower, further improving productivity. The PM Modular will be offered in three trim levels, with three standard lengths from 4000 to 8000mm, and three widths from 1300 to 2000mm. The standard 800mm Z stroke ensures the PM Modular provides all users with sufficient processing capacity too. A choice of tool magazines with 20 or 33 places is also available. A variety of standard tables is provided too, including a matrix vacuum table, and Pod and Rail table, making the machine ideal for both panel processing, as well as for hardwood

joinery production. Maka’s Click-System Pods provide secure, precise workpiece clamping. With the new model comes added visibility and accessibility too. Newly designed hoods

open up the whole front, greatly contributing to safety, and facilitating maintenance and setting. The automatic chip conveyor for removing swarf is also standard, ensuring the PM Modular is as efficient in disposing offcuts and waste, as it is machining. High efficiency has always been a hallmark of Maka CNC machines, and the central starting point for any new model. The PM Modular is designed as robust as the PM270, and at the same time has the good ergonomics of the PE. By combining the advantages of its predecessors, it delivers particularly convincing results. Combined with Maka’s own Power-Maka spindle and Click-System Pods, all designed and produced in-house, the PM Modular trumps all others. As Iain states: “With the new PM Modular we have a product that combines the highest quality Maka technology, now suitable for a wider range of potential customers. It’s an uncompromising development, and a natural evolution of earlier generations of Maka machines.” maka.com

For many years, JJ Smith Woodworking Machinery has offered specialist, bespoke equipment to suit customers’ individual production requirements. Rather than take a one-size-fits-all approach, the company has carefully selected a number of partners with which to work, each of whom specialises in different, but associated, sectors of manufacturing. This is highlighted by the co-operation JJ Smith has established with three leading manufacturers of CNC equipment – Comec Group, Intorex and MZ Project.

Specialist CNC machining solutions from JJ Smith The Comec Group and JJ Smith have been working together for over 20 years, initially offering a range of mechanical drilling, slotting, shaping and cutting machines, mainly for use in the solid wood furniture industry. As the company grew, it embarked on the design and manufacture of a range of specialist CNC machinery that can be adapted and used to produce a wide range of components. Each of the Frontal series of machines consists of a vertical automatic hopper feed loader, with a step-by-step throughfeed system which delivers the component to different machining stations, which can include saw units, horizontal/vertical, drilling, routing and end/face milling. This particular model of machine can be used for producing general furniture components, rails, and, in particular, drawer fronts, with three machines already working in the UK dedicated for this type of production. The MD series of CNC machining centre is available in three different versions – MD Classic, Top and Jamb. All of these can be configured with a number of different machining heads, including vertical and/or horizontal milling heads and NC drilling groups, which can be specified to work on all the faces/ends of a furniture rail. In addition, a C axis can be added, meaning it is possible to cut components to size, with either straight or angled cutting. Another unique feature of the MD is that it can be equipped with an automatic hopper feed-

Comec MD series of CNC machining centres

loading system to offer continuous production. The MD Jamb model is specifically designed for the volume production of door components and door linings, with the possibility to have automatic infeed and outfeed loading systems. Intorex is known worldwide as a leading manufacturer of wood-turning equipment – in particular, for its range of CNC lathes which has become increasingly popular due to its quick, simple set-up and flexibility. There are three different models from which to choose, each offering different levels of productivity and machining options depending on customers’ individual requirements. In recent years, Intorex has developed its range of four- and five-axis CNC ‘between centres’, machining centres which can produce a wide range of complexshaped furniture parts along with stair spindles and newel posts. A unique feature of these machines is the CNC-controlled sanding heads, which allows for the components to come off as finished sanded items. In addition, thanks to the automatic hopper feed loading, it is possible to set up for continuous, uninterrupted production.

The TC800 model is equipped with a CNCcontrolled milling head for shaping and then either one or two vertical/horizontal router heads that can perform other machining operations. The TMC model, which can have a working capacity of either 1500 or 3000mm, is fitted with a router head and six-position automatic toolchanger and a milling head for shaping, giving even more machining possibilities. On request, it can also be fitted with flat-bed Matrix tables, meaning conventional fouraxis machining operations can take place, in addition to the five-axis ‘between centres’ operation. Finally, from MZ Project there is a complete range of CNC-controlled bandsaw machines, which eliminate the need for manual cutting, marking out and jigs, meaning the operation is much quicker and safer than when using standard manual bandsaws. They can be specified to cut either solid wood and/or flat panel material, with the top-of-therange Pluris model being fitted with router and drill heads, meaning it is possible to cut nested sofa/chair frame parts from 2.5 x 1.2m sheets, with the facility to cut up to four boards high, making the machine extremely productive. Masterwood GB’s MD Dave Kennard outlines the company’s current CNC machine product portfolio highlighting recent updates and improvements.

Masterwood’s CNC family – solutions for all Masterwood Spa is one of the leading suppliers dedicated to CNC solutions, supplying machines to countries all around the world, and it is still owned and run by the three Italian families of Muti, Zangheri, and Boschetti. The company provides a full range of machines to cover various materials including the supply of Muti oscillating chisel mortises, drilling machines, and routers, which are all built in the Rimini and San Marino factories in Italy using proven designs and leading suppliers for components like HSD, Beckhoff, Yaskawa, THK, Schmalz, and Becker. Over the last 10 years, the company has redesigned much of the range to meet customers’ needs following the global recession. As a result, a more efficient company can now supply more individual solutions but keep production times to a minimum, with various kit options like horizontal routers and C-axis controls easy to retro fit at sensible prices. Pod and rail CNCs Starting with an entry level Project 250, moving through the larger 300 and 400 Project series to the top end Project 500 range, these CNC machines can be supplied in all formats for solid timbers, panels, composites and other materials. This includes long or short beds, cantilever or gantry designs, manual or automatic beds, in three-, four- or five-axis formats. Flatbed CNCs To complement the pod and rail range, Masterwood has increased its range of Matrix beds for nesting and special works. These range from the entry 2500 x 1250mm bed through a large range of sheet sizes up to beds of over 7500mm in length. All the flatbeds are to a heavy bed design by Masterwood with the gantries driven on both sides of the machine bed for added accuracy and long lasting reliability. The flatbed range can have infeed and outfeed systems to automate the production, allowing full sheets to be loaded, fully machined, finished panels pushed out, and the bed cleaned before the next sheet is loaded. On

CNCPages.indd 12

top of this, a manual or fully automatic arm can be added for sticking labels on to the sheets prior or after machining. Special CNCs To add to the main CNC range, Masterwood then produces dedicated machines like the 4WIN (windows), Project Door (full size doors), DoorLine (door locks and hinges), Teknomat and MultiMill (window and frame components). These machines can be manually fed, or in most cases, supplied with a mixture of automatic loading and unloading equipment, including robots – the employees of the future? Production lines In recent years, Masterwood has been asked to provide more and more automated production lines to leading manufacturers around the world. This has covered such products as windows, doors, frames – even sunglasses.

The special systems have included such items as inserting weather seals into components, selecting and fixing locks into housings, special beds for machining gun parts, and special drill heads for multi drilling acoustic panels.

Dedicated software The developments and improvements to the CNC machines are one thing, but the biggest changes have been with software. As Masterwood’s PCs have become more powerful, the software has to follow suit as well, allowing customers to produce programs that would consist of thousands of lines of code in minutes. This allows carvings and intricate work to be produced on the very basic three axis machines, often dismissing the need to go to more expensive five axis machines and software. Masterwood has always produced software with its own companies, but to take this to higher levels, the company now works under contract with some of the leading software houses ensuring that machines and software are fully compatible at all times. All the machines are supplied with the tried and tested MasterWorks CAD/CAM, an easy-touse but powerful package for most CNC work.

CNCPages.indd 13

To add to this there are dedicated packages to cover staircases, windows, door sets (timber frame and solid core), traditional box windows, cabinets, furniture, louvres, and the latest 3D software for three-, four- and five-axis work. Any of the packages can be added to a customer’s machine at any time, providing the ability to change direction or production methods if required. All the Masterwood software packages come with full on-site installation and training to tailor to the customer’s manufacturing needs. Support Selling and supplying machines is one thing, supporting and helping customers is the next stage, and Masterwood says it is the most important element. “For first-time buyers, CNC is likely to be the biggest investment their company makes,” explains Masterwood GB’s MD, Dave Kennard, “so it is important that customers see the results on their production as soon as possible

…and within time we find they totally rely on their CNC, so if there are problems, for whatever reason, it is important that they are back running in the shortest time possible.” and feel comfortable with the direction they have taken.” Masterwood GB uses up to twelve technicians in the UK and Ireland to cover the installation and training for new CNC machines and software, support and back up, servicing, repairs, and breakdowns, plus upgrading old machines to be more compatible with the new machines when installed. “We also have the expertise of our Italian company staff to help with the more specialised jobs when required,” continues Dave. “We have over 300 companies in the UK and Ireland using our machines. Many of these are family run, and within time we find they totally rely on their CNC, so if there are problems, for whatever reason, it is important that they are back running in the shortest time possible. “Our growing team have vast knowledge and experience of the Masterwood machines, not just today’s models, but those produced in the last 30 years, many still operating every day including CNC machines and the Muti oscillating chisel mortisers. “For Masterwood GB, our customers are important. They become our showrooms, in many cases new sales have resulted from visits to see existing customers’ machines in operation, and the good reports that are passed on, so it is in our interest to provide the best service for our growing family of customers, and we never lose sight that there is always room for improvements.” 01293 402700 masterwood.com

In solid wood manufacturing today, flexibility is the key. Whether making a switch from ‘A’ energy rated timber windows to creating workpieces with complex shapes, Weinig’s Multirex CNC uses the very latest technology to make easy work of the most challenging manufacturing, opening up new production potential.

Leading five-axis technology for solid wood processing from Weinig Weinig’s long understanding of the changing needs of solid timber processing makes all the difference. The Multirex 7125 and Multirex 7225 offer almost unlimited possibilities in five-axis machining. Constructed for highly demanding work, the solid and well-thought-out construction of both machines represents the latest in modern and application-friendly industrial design. The Multirex CNC features innovative and robust clamping technology specifically developed to guarantee the precise machining of solid timber components. The robust construction of the Multirex offers stock removal performance that is expected for solid wood applications. The T-Flight is the most compact machine ever to come from the Alberti design team. The new T-Flight enables small- to medium-sized manufacturers to get in on the batch one concept.

Alberti’s T-flight throughfeed drilling machine from Ney

The impressive Alberti T-Flight is a dedicated drilling machine, which is extremely accurate and fast, with a small footprint and is competitively priced. It can be used as a throughfeed machine where space permits, and the infeed table is designed with an extension which can be detached to minimise the space requirement when processing smaller panels. Where space is limited, or for single operator use, the Alberti T-Flight will also send the panel back to the operator when it’s been processed, which makes it a very compact one-man machine. The T-Flight will drill a typical kitchen gable in less than 35 seconds and has a top-fed bed with a roller table. The machine is fully automatic, so whatever program is being run, the side fence comes in automatically to the panel. The panel is fed in automatically, drilled and either sent out of the back of the machine or returned to the operator. Laser recognition of the panel picks up the leading edge as it enters the machine and starts the drilling sequence 9mm from the edge. Because the laser references the back of the panel as well as the front, if the panel varies in size, the construction drilling remains accurate.

CNCPages.indd 22

Any error is always thrown to the middle of the panel, so steps between rails and gables, either up or down, simply cannot happen. The parametric programming is very easy to use: change the panel size and everything changes with it, or program a left-hand gable, then mirror image it to create a right-hand gable. The Alberti T-Flight comes with 12 vertical

drills, horizontal drilling on all sides of the panel, a router head for grooving and a saw blade on the longitudinal axis. Butt and scribe joints, locking slots, sink cut-outs, cable tidy cut-outs – it will process everything, even machining a 40mm worktop. 024 7630 8100 ney.co.uk

A new SCM Morbidelli Author M200F – from the Italian machinery specialist’s new All-In-One range of CNC machining centres – is making a huge impact at Oxfordshire’s Foxstow Joinery.

SCM Author opens new doors for Foxstow Foxstow Joinery, established in 2011 by owner Oliver Bryan, is based in the heart of Oxfordshire on the outskirts of the village of Freeland, and provides a range of high-end bespoke joinery services to both consumers and businesses. Oliver’s background in construction, particularly in the realms of residential development projects, was the catalyst behind the launch of Foxstow Joinery, which started life as a general joinery workshop, manufacturing a broad range of joinery products for domestic construction projects, but now specialises in the manufacture of high-quality solid timber doors, under the Foxstow Shaker Doors banner. The decision to specialise in doormaking was in part due to the expertise and reputation already gained in this area, but also to cater for a growth in demand for high-quality, competitively-priced timber doors. “We design and build almost every possible type of external, internal and cabinet door, along with associated cabinetry,” says Oliver Bryan, “and, with our team of skilled craftsmen and the company’s wider expertise in bespoke joinery manufacture, we are able to offer our clients extended support on new-build or renovation projects.” The company currently employs around 15 people and is undergoing a period of rapid growth – especially in the fitted kitchens and

bedrooms market, where Foxstow Shaker Doors is manufacturing bespoke doors and drawer fronts to fit standard cabinets supplied by the likes of Howdens and Ikea, as well as designing and manufacturing additional pieces of matching, custom-built cabinetry when required. Despite the obvious capabilities of the workforce at Foxstow, it was becoming an impossible task to keep pace with the increasing demand for bespoke doors using existing machinery and employing traditional

Norbert Soos (left), whose previous experience with SCM equipment helped to reduce the learning curve for Foxstow, attended in-house training at SCM’s UK base in Nottingham along with colleague Mark Stewart, who was new to CNC technology. Additional on-site training provided by SCM was also embraced by owner Oliver Bryan (right)

techniques. Foxstow had previously invested in several classical SCM machines, such as the TEN220 Class tenoner, a Superset XL moulder and TF130 PS Class spindle moulder, so, when the need for a state-of-the-art CNC machining centre became the obvious next step, the decision to contact Jamie Walters, SCM’s area sales manager, was one of the easier decisions Oliver has had to make for the business. “Our existing classical machines, purchased through SCM’s distributor Blyth Woodmachinery, have more than met our expectations,” explains Oliver, “and I was keen to maintain our affiliation with SCM if the right machine for the job was going to be a costeffective option.” Production space at Foxstow Joinery is very much at a premium, so providing a machine with a footprint to fit the restricted floor space was the first challenge SCM needed to overcome. Taking all of Foxstow’s requirements into account, Jamie’s proposal was for the installation of a Morbidelli Author M200F – one of SCM’s new All-In-One range of CNC machining centres. The Author M200F was in fact so new that there were no other installations in the UK to demonstrate the machine’s capabilities, and Oliver was invited to see a similar machine put through its paces at the workshop of an SCM customer in Essex. “The machine we demonstrated for Foxstow was an M400,” says Jamie. “The M400 has a larger capacity than Foxstow required, and

www.furnitureproduction.net

was too big for the space available, but the demonstration proved to Oliver that this was the right technology to satisfy Foxstow’s production requirements.” In common with many growing manufacturing businesses, Foxstow did not have an openended budget, and although SCM had been his first port of call, Oliver also evaluated similar machines on offer from competing manufacturers. However, with the SCM machine ticking all the technical boxes, Oliver committed to an order just a few weeks later. The compact footprint of the M200F, coupled with SCM’s ProSpace solution, facilitates installation in the tightest of spaces, and the model is able to process sheet widths up to 1900mm, with a maximum working width of 1620mm, 3110mm lengthways, and vertical clearance height of 250mm. Operator safety is assured by sensors, incorporated into the soft-cushioned bumpers on each side of the moving gantry, which react instantly on contact with any obstacle, immediately stopping all machining operations. The complete absence of restrictive fences around the machine, together with the fullyintegrated electrical cabinet and vacuum pump, allows operators total freedom and access to all sides of the worktable during machining operations, and the large viewing window, which opens for cleaning and maintenance, provides an unrestricted view of machining operations. The Morbidelli M200F is loaded with a range of unique technologies – SCM’s Rotoaxial RO.AX spindle technology, for example, with unrivalled maintenance intervals of 1000 operating hours and drilling speeds up to 8000rpm, guarantees stability and accuracy during fast drilling operations. Meanwhile, the JQX five-axis unit allows tools to be oriented in virtually any direction, and allows machining up to 10° below the horizontal plane, while the continuous aluminium alloy table provides uniform distribution of vacuum to the workpiece, with vacuum outlets spaced 12cm apart in both directions, and foot-switch operation allows the operator to manage twohanded loading, positioning and unloading operations efficiently and safely. Before the introduction of the Morbidelli CNC machine, Foxstow was making all its Shakerdesign doors with traditional joints, using the classical machinery. Introducing the CNC machining centre has revolutionised sheet production and improved efficiency, quality and safety. And, as well as the significant benefits of machining sheet materials, the POD element of the Morbidelli Author M200F now allows Foxstow to machine other bespoke pieces such as pelmets, cornices, and curved-head doors and frames. The 130 x 130mm square vacuum pods are easily and quickly positioned and fixed in any position across the entire worktable surface, allowing the fast positioning and set-up of workpieces ready for machining.

CNCPages.indd 25

Primary control and programming functions are carried out at the mobile console, with its 19in colour monitor, but the handheld Tecpad remote control unit allows on-the-hoof monitoring and control during machining

With a 14-position toolchanger sited adjacent to the 24,000rpm routing head, tool changeovers on the Author M200F are accomplished in around 15 seconds

Foxstow has got off to a flying start with a comparatively minimal range of Vivaldi tooling, supplied by Viscount Tooling, but the objective is to build on this range over time, as and when new product designs demand a more complex collection of tools. As with all SCM CNC machines, the Morbidelli M200F utilises SCM’s proven Xilog Maestro 3D CAD/CAM software suite. The software is highly intuitive, with simple drag-and-drop functionality to many regular operations, in addition to all the standard in-built functions, such as: importing of IGES files, editing contours and curves, etc; preconfigured geometries and drilling/routing patterns available from the Maestro Apps library enable the operator to create bespoke macros and sub-programs; machine operations are programmed and managed from the mobile control console, which incorporates a Windows-based PC and 19in colour monitor and, with the console connected to an internal network, design data can be transferred from networked PCs; and optional internet connection provides access to SCM’s service and diagnostics network. In addition, the specification for Foxstow included a Tecpad remote control, with a 7in touch-screen colour display, allowing control

over a multitude of program and machining operations, including manual speed override, error management and graphic positioning of rails and pods. Foxstow finally settled on the Morbidelli Author M200F because of the new technology it offered and because of the overall value for money the purchase represented, but Oliver was also impressed with the technical sales support that Jamie Walters and SCM provided along the way. “The purchasing process met all my expectations,” says Oliver, “as has the invaluable support we’ve received from knowledgeable SCM engineers.” SCM delivered, installed and commissioned the new machine in the time frame agreed with Foxstow and, in conclusion, Oliver comments: “This investment gives us a clear advantage over many of our competitors and we are able to provide our customers with a viable alternative to off-the-shelf, standard-sized doors. “Our capacity for manufacturing Shaker doors has doubled and, as a result, we are taking orders for bespoke doors from all over the UK and Europe.” 0115 977 0044 scmgroup.me.uk

As one of the UK’s leading architectural door and door set manufacturers Hanson & Beards provides unsurpassed quality and service to all of its customers. Combining the company’s vast experience and a tradition of craftsmanship with the most efficient manufacturing techniques it ensures that projects can be handled successfully.

Hanson & Beards upgrade with five axis CNC technology

Hanson & Beards manufactures everything in house from raw materials – but with two tired, old three-axis CNC machining centres that were a bit slow and not as accurate as they used to be, the company decided that it was time to look at more modern five-axis CNC machining centres to improve productivity as well as the quality of machining and gain a much higher accuracy. Owner, Adrian Hanson says: “We attended the W16 show and had a look at all the machines that were available. We wanted two machines and we needed them to be relatively compact – but we really needed a quality machine that could cope with two shifts as we normally are running 20 hours a day here.” Adrian went on to say: “Felder had a very attractive stand, we spoke with them, got on really well and liked the look of the product. From there we were invited to the showroom, which was a great step up with live demonstrations going on.”

CNCPages.indd 26

In December 2016, Hanson & Beards purchased two profit H350 CNC machining centres from Felder Group’s Format-4 range. Adrian comments: “Not only did the product appeal to us, so did the service, back-up and the warranty, It was all exactly what we were looking for! The five-axis machine added the flexibility that a five-axis machine brings but it also reduced our production times and even though the H350 has a small footprint it is still a very heavy duty machine. “Since the machines have gone in, CNC machining is no longer an issue for us and we have increased our productivity massively. CNC machining used to be the big bottleneck in our factory. Issues on the old machines meant that pieces had to be re-machined – that has been eradicated now and we get the right product off the machine first time!” For more information watch the full testimonial on YouTube at Felder Group UK TV. 01908 635000 felder-group.co.uk

When James Burleigh had the opportunity to add a CNC machine to his manufacturing capability, he thoroughly researched the market to decide on the optimum solution to enable his business to expand.

Homag BMG 311 CNC revolutionises production at James Burleigh James Burleigh has been making furniture for over 30 years. In 2002 he set up his eponymous limited company to design and produce a signature collection of tables, benches and stools that are visually appealing, strong and durable. Based in north London, James Burleigh and his 17 employees have created a business with a turnover of around £2m from their 7500 sqft facility. “Our business really took-off about five years ago,” explains Burleigh. He continues, “The profound change in the way offices are set-up has created a demand for more versatile furniture. Companies are looking for more flexible, adaptable solutions that reflect the culture and ethos of each specific setting.” Labour intensive hand routing “As our business grew, we were doing more and more hand routing which was not only time consuming, but also was demanding everincreasing floor space. Because of this, I’d been thinking about investing in a CNC machine for at least a couple of years; the problem was that we just didn’t have the space to fit one in. “The opportunity came when the unit next door became available. It was always going to be a tight squeeze, but by knocking down a wall we could realise our goal of adding a CNC to our machine portfolio and I knew it was the right decision for the company’s development. “Having had the need for a CNC in the back of my mind for some time, I had already done quite a bit of research on suitable brands in the market. Before drawing up a short list, however, we visited the UK’s major woodworking show W16, where we were able to see all the main manufacturers under one roof. Prior to the show we’d been scanning the woodworking trade press to gather as much information as possible to aid us in the decision-making process.” Seeing is believing “In the end it came down to two companies, one German and the other Italian, both of which produced quality machinery. What swung it Homag’s way was the professional pre-sales service and the product demonstrations they arranged for us. “Roger Wilks, Homag’s area sales manager at the time, had been answering all our questions over the previous two years, yet never once did he try to pressurise us into making a purchase. As our interest piqued, he arranged for us to

James Burleigh with his HOMAG BMG 311 Venture CNC

visit a couple of manufacturing facilities in the UK which were already using a similar CNC. “The clincher for us, however, was when we were invited out to Homag’s manufacturing plant in Germany. They asked us to bring some of our component parts to be machined on the BMG 311 so we could judge for ourselves the performance of the machine. ”The results were amazing. I was staggered at not only how quickly the machine could process the parts, but also the superb quality of the finished items.” Price - not the governing factor “Whilst price is always a significant question when investing in such advanced machinery, for us it wasn’t the governing factor. Far more important was the durable build quality of the Homag BMG 311 and the fact that it could reliably produce high quality, precision parts time after time. “Once the order had been placed, Homag met every deadline that was promised and the machine was installed smoothly within two days. The Homag engineers trained our staff on site and we also sent three of them up to Castle Donington for more comprehensive training on the woodWOP software.” A production revolution “The BMG 311 has completely amazed us. It is so incredible to see what it can do; it has entirely fulfilled our expectations. I would estimate that we are benefitting from a 30-40% increase in capacity and although the footprint of the machine is significant, it still occupies far

CM

less space than that taken up by the old manual routers. “The CNC has reduced the number of hours we have to work, significantly decreasing the need for overtime. As a consequence, our workforce is far less stressed and we have been able to move workers to more productive areas of the shop floor.”

Bringing benefits across the board “As a commercial concern, we’re extremely committed to the protection of the world’s resources and environment. To this end, the Homag BMG 311 is doing its bit to help. Not only does having one CNC machine instead of ten hand routers give us more efficient dust extraction and therefore cleaner air, but also it has enabled us to introduce a new product made from all our laminate and wood off-cuts. This latest addition to our range, a small side table was launched at the Stockholm Fair. “We are delighted with our investment in this Homag BMG 311 CNC. It has amazed us in every way and will likely pay for itself within 12-18 months which is impressive indeed. The people at Homag are all very professional, the machine demonstration we had in Germany convinced us to purchase the CNC and the installation was beautifully executed. From day one, the machine has transformed our manufacturing processes and delivers first class results time after time. We couldn’t be more delighted,” concludes James Burleigh. 01332 856424 homag.com

After investing in a Biesse Rover K CNC machining centre, Brunton Joinery had no idea that the future direction of the business would take Brunton Joinery to the heights and success at which it now operates.

New possibilites for Brunton Joinery with Biesse’s Rover K Established in 1969 by John Brunton, Brunton Joinery is a traditional joinery company, priding itself in the manufacture of quality, bespoke bedroom furniture as well as doors and windows. John’s son, Stephen, who now runs the company, explains: “We had a contract to supply MDF desk tops, which we produced using a template for hand routing and then also finishing by hand. It used to take us two weeks to manufacture around 84 desk tops, so we decided to buy the Rover K CNC machine to help to automate the process. “The change has been amazing. We now produce those same desk tops in just three days. We’ve also found that using high quality diamond tools has reduced the finishing time by 50%, so just on that product alone, it’s been a great success.” However, the main benefit for the company was still to come. Stephen continues: “We’ve previously made a few door sets, again mainly by hand and we won a contract to supply a major building contractor. We couldn’t have met the timescales without the Rover K. For example, it used to take about 22 minutes to chisel out a mortise lock. It now takes two minutes and 14 seconds to machine out the lock and hinges! “We’ve now won additional contracts to supply door sets in the new build market, for the domestic housing, commercial property and education sectors and the Rover K will pay for itself within the first year, which is a remarkable achievement.” Stephen’s son Nicky, who is now responsible for this side of the business explains: “It was a massive leap of faith for us, but our business needed to progress and the Rover K has given us the speed, accuracy and consistency which is required to win these major contracts. “We chose Biesse due to their reputation for precision and reliability. We purchased the machine through Maginn Machinery, who we’ve worked with for over 40 years and they helped us to spec the machine properly.

CNCPages.indd 34

Stephen and Nicky Brunton with the Rover K

“For instance, we included the option of ‘set-up assist’, which saves us a lot of time and is much safer as you can’t put the pods in the wrong place. Also the service and back-up from Maginn is fantastic, they’ve never let us down. We trust them to always provide a solution should anything go wrong.”

So, from those humble beginnings of MDF desktops to the high volume manufacture of door sets, the Rover K has been instrumental in helping to deliver success for John, Stephen and Nicky Brunton. 01327 300366 biesse.com

CAD+T, a family business established 28 years ago, is an Austrian firm specialising in software solutions for joineries and interior fit-out companies.

Join the future with CNC technology

CAD+T’s drafting software is based on AutoCAD® and Autodesk Inventor® and offers specialised add-ons which focus on the requirements of the interior fit-out industry. Besides drafting and ERP solutions, CAD+T offers a next generation CNC interface. So far CNC data has been either programmed manually direct on the machine or have been imported from AutoCAD or Inventor as DXF format which still requires a lot of manual input to have the CNC program ready. But with the CNC technology of CAD+T it is now possible to change this situation. The draughtsman does not need to have knowledge in CNC

CNCPages.indd 36

programming any more and can operate with several NC machines with one software. One of the specialities is the NC drive of large tools, as sawing with five-axis machines considering the production logic for example every cut from top or material-dependent work steps. CAD+T offers interfaces to all current three- and five-axis CNC machines as well as tools for edgebanding and nesting. Nesting is even available in 3D – as well as on beam saw. This is required for carcasses with mitres, automatic chain cutting and mixed work orders with consolidation and staging. +43 7229 83 100 0 cadt-solutions.com

Whitehill Spindle Tools’ recent major investment in state-of-the-art production technology has, the company maintains, given it a real edge over other tooling manufacturers, enabling design and production of bespoke CNC tooling for solid wood at competitive prices with short lead times.

Whitehill – an optimal choice for CNC tooling Comprehensive R&D in tool design and knife clamping systems allows for production of smaller, lighter blocks and where required, with profiled backing plates for multiple profile options. Combined with the firm’s extensive experience in joinery design, production process efficiency – and creating tooling solutions with multiple window and door configurations – Whitehill Tooling is among the front-runners in this growing market sector. With all manufacturing taking place under one roof in its Luton-based factory, Whitehill says it is the largest British tooling manufacturer of this type. Maintaining production locally, and in the UK, means faster turn-arounds and the ability to emphasise customer service. The effects of Brexit, although still unconfirmed, are likely to be in its favour, helping Whitehill to powerfully grow and further increase its market share. Whether needing multiple toolsets or just a single block for that one-off job, Whitehill has the quality, service and expertise to provide the right solution at the right price. 01582 736881 whitehill-tools.com

40 BUSINESS

www.furnitureproduction.net

Close Brothers Asset Finance has a long history financing SMEs in the furniture and joinery sector, funding a wide range of woodworking machinery. To find out more, Furniture & Joinery Production gave Ian Barker, Close Brothers Asset Finance’s Manufacturing MD, the opportunity to tell us about the critical role alternative funders play in ensuring SMEs have access to the funds they need to grow their business …

Growing business with alternative funding Many small business owners are still unaware of the benefits that a wellstructured asset finance facility can bring to their business. The route to finance is still, for many, through traditional channels, when considering investing in new equipment. As mainstream sources move further away from the traditional overdraft facility, it is now more likely that any headroom in the overdraft facility will be used to pay overheads and suppliers rather than be tied up in capital equipment. Asset finance – a fast growing finance option Access to finance is a common challenge for SMEs which can see the potential to grow their business but do not have enough working capital to pursue the opportunities.

CNCPages.indd 40

A key benefit of asset finance is that it offers an effective solution to this problem by spreading the cost of an asset over its useful working life. A well-structured hire purchase or leasing facility gives a business access to the machinery or equipment it needs without compromising cash flow. Repayments can be structured to take account of seasonal cash flow fluctuations and hire purchase charges, while leasing payments can be offset against pre-tax profits. Additionally, there are no restrictions in the choice of supplier, and asset finance can be used for both new and second hand assets. Refinance for fast release of funds Looking more closely at the various finance products, Sale and HP back is a quick way to release cash against existing assets. The funds released can be used to expand a

business, settle outstanding bills or to fund a deposit on a new piece of equipment or even premises. A business has interrupted use of the asset, and repayments are matched with projected income stream. Sale and HP back can be used to release cash regardless of whether an asset is already owned or is on finance with a different lender. Acquiring a business using asset finance In today’s financial market, it may not always be straightforward to secure mainstream bank funding to acquire a new business. However, if the target company has a good fixed asset base consisting of vehicles, plant or machinery, it may be possible to re-finance the assets of the target company to fund the acquisition. 01244 457569 closeassetfinance.co.uk/woodworking

As the implementation deadline for the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) looms, Catherine HerriesSmith, the BFM’s legal adviser, explains what it means for companies within the industry.

The six principles of the GDPR The GDPR is due for implementation by 25th May, 2018. It aims to strengthen the rights of individuals in relation to the processing of their personal data, whether automated or held in structured manual files. At its heart will be six updated data protection principles. Personal data is defined as “any information relating to an identified or identifiable person (‘data subject’)”. There is a separate definition for high risk ‘special categories’ (such as health, ethnicity and sex life). A new Data Protection Act 2018 will supplement the GDPR. Processing is a wide concept and includes acquiring, holding and disclosing personal data. The legislation seeks to achieve greater accountability for

processing and privacy, by design in planning the life cycle of personal data. If you have 250 employees or more, or process personal data on a large scale, or special categories of personal data, you should keep a record of relevant categories of personal data, including purposes, data subjects, recipients, transfers out of the European Economic Area, the legal basis for processing, retention periods and security measures. There will no longer be a requirement annually to notify the Information Commissioner (ICO). The appointment of Data Protection Officers will be mandatory in some cases, but otherwise is helpful to promote compliance. Data processors who undertake their work on behalf of data controllers will acquire new obligations.

The legislation seeks to achieve greater accountability for processing and privacy, by design in planning the life cycle of personal data. The first principle requires that personal data must be processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner in relation to the data subject. For each category of personal data there must be a lawful basis for processing (for instance, consent, necessary for performance of a contract, etc) and a Privacy Notice provided when data is first obtained, or the purpose changed. The key information to provide is who you are, the purposes, lawful basis, recipients and whether it is to be transferred out of the European Economic Area. In addition, you should make available (such as on a website privacy policy) retention periods and rights of the data subjects (such as to access their information, to be forgotten or to have their data transferred to a new data controller). The second data protection principle requires that personal data must be collected for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes and not further processed in a way incompatible with those purposes. In short, if you obtain personal data for the purposes of fulfilling an order for goods, you should not be using it for an unrelated purpose without a lawful basis such as the specific, informed consent of the data subject. Under the third principle, personal data must be adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed. For example, do not request information such as date of birth where it is unnecessary. The fourth principle requires that personal data must be accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date. Inaccurate data can

17/05/2017 12:39 12:31 21/03/2018

inconvenience or harm the data subject. The fifth principle requires storage limitation of personal data. Adopt effective retention and disposal practices. The sixth principle requires that personal data is processed in a way that ensures appropriate safety of the personal data. Under the GDPR there will be mandatory reporting of data breaches by data controllers to the ICO within 72 hours if there is a risk to the data subject (for example, reputational damage or identity fraud) and reporting within a reasonable time to data subjects if there is a high risk to them. Administrative fines for various infringements of the legislation will be increasing to up to £17m or 4% of total worldwide annual turnover (whichever is greater). It is therefore imperative to implement good governance, training and policies to manage the risks of the legislation. The full wording of the GDPR can be found at https://gdprinfo.eu/
