Seamless revolution Visible edgebanding joints are yesterday’s problem. Today’s furniture and kitchen cabinetry production businesses are increasingly moving over to one of the zero glue line options available from a number of manufacturers. A tipping point has been reached too, because although consumers may not necessarily be walking into stores and asking for zero glue line qualities, I believe they are naturally drawn to the cleaner-looking finish of a beautifully executed cabinet, and so top manufacturers are upping their game – investing and taking advantage of new techniques – and the trickle-down effect may in due course relegate non-zero glue line furniture to the second-best option. Of course, careful examination and assessment needs to take place before deciding whether hot air, laser, near infra-red or PUR bonding provides the right solution for a given business. There is no obvious panacea in this sector, and different options are being promoted by a range of manufacturers – so how does one choose what’s right for a given application? That really comes down to specific applications, and of course, budgetary constraints. In this special supplement issue, we feature new machinery from Holz-Her, Cehisa, SCM, Vitap, Homag and Fravol. Felder will be holding an open house event in November, and visitors will be able to get hands on with its latest model, the tempora 60.06L edgebander from the Format-4 range, featuring advantEdge technology. On the logistics side of things, we were among the first to visit Ostermann’s new futureproof logistics centre in Bocholt, Germany, which provides the speed and efficiency for the company’s impressive international supply chain. Ostermann also helps out with a helpful article from their experts regarding the different types of zero glue line edgebanding machinery options available. A simple, recognisable statement, attributed to the Chinese premier, Li Keqiang, goes: “Changes call for innovation, and innovation leads to progress.” And whilst I imagine he was thinking about more than just the world of edgebanding, his words absolutely echo the developments in this marketplace over the last decade as the seamless revolution continues.

German edgings specialist Ostermann has opened its new 5000m2 logistics centre to cope with a larger stockholding, growing demand and to maintain its market-leading response times.

New logistics centre commissioned to exceed expectations With around 3000 orders a day, via the company’s leading online shop and App, Ostermann realised it needed to improve its logistics operations to cope with delivering its huge range of edgings quickly and efficiently. The construction project which ensued represented the highest investment in Ostermann history. For its UK customers, the company has a dedicated facility in Droitwich near Birmingham where customers can, if they choose, drop in and collect a telephone order – but for many, Ostermann’s offer to order before 4 pm and be delivered within 24 hrs, plus a discount, plus a discount, is an increasingly popular option. The building phase at Ostermann’s Bocholt, Germany headquarters started in July 2016 and has taken 12 months to finish. The company already has a substantial traditional warehouse area with a huge storage capacity, but such has been the growth in both product lines and demand, that a new automated warehouse and associated packaging and despatch scenario was needed to help maintain the standards Ostermann customers expect – both for now and in the future.

Dagmar Daxenberger (managing director) and Christof Wauters (management material handling and logistics) by the newly-completed logistics centre

Behind the fully automatic high-bay warehouse (to the left), a new despatch area and a fully automatic order-picking warehouse were constructed in just slightly over a year

Critically, the design incorporates potential further expansion within the floor plan which gives the company a very solid logistics platform to provide a first-class delivery service for its German and international client base. The new warehouse covers 2500m², with a height of 14m. The two-storey packaging and despatch area is similarly 2500m2 and also features an upper gallery with new office spaces. The warehouse is a fully automated box warehouse system featuring over 20,000 box spaces – the robust red boxes were specifically designed for the Ostermann application. In all, Ostermann now boasts an impressive 40,000 storage spaces for furniture edgings in Bocholt. From the warehouse through packaging and into despatch, there is an impressive kilometrelong fully automatic conveyor system and a doubling of the storage area for edgings. The semi-autonomous process moves the orders from storage to despatch in just a few minutes

and the rest of the opened edging rolls are put back into storage via a fully automatic process. This area features eight adjustable rolloff tables and ball roller tables for the commissioning – all of which is critical to the company being able to maintain a highly efficient and streamlined process. The packaged orders, featuring cartons and bags with the Ostermann logo, are then processed to one of the six loading ramps where the outgoing goods can be sorted according to the forwarding agent and destination. Unlike many warehousing, packaging and despatch facilities, Ostermann’s Bocholt plant provides a really pleasant place to work – the light and airy space with the large window facades allow ample daylight at the workstations. 01905 793550 sales.uk@ostermann.eu ostermann.eu

Edgebanding systems with zero bondline technology have been a key investment strategy for manufacturers – but which way is best? Ostermann’s experts offer their opinions on the right solutions for a given job.

Zero bondline options – many ways to reach the goal

The laser edging was bonded with laser technology

The Airtec edging was bonded with modern hot air technology

The Infratec edging was bonded with near infrared radiation (NIR) technology

More and more Ostermann customers are acquiring a system with zero bondline technology. In addition to the zero bondline optics that are certainly in focus, the joints between board and edging are significantly more resistant to heat, moisture and dust than joints with EVA hotmelt adhesive. The experts at Ostermann are happy to help when manufacturers are uncertain about the right technology for individual requirements. “Of course, we are not a machinery dealership,”says Stephen Parsons, the manager of Ostermann UK, “but we have studied the different technologies intensively to adapt our three different zero bondline edgings perfectly to the respective machine technology – and we are happy to share this knowledge.” Modern hot air technology Machines with modern hot air technology offer cost-effective access to zero bondline technology due to the comparatively low procurement costs. It is often also possible to retrofit hot air units on existing edgebanding machines that have a jointing unit. This technology is also suitable for small, compact machines, and therefore for small workshops as well. There have been some developments in this technology in the past two to three years, of which reduced energy requirement and the shortened heating times need particular mention. In modern hot air technology, the functional layer is melted with approx. 300°C hot compressed air. The feed rates lie between 10-20m/min. The heating time, even if very short, the slightly higher energy requirement and the noise of the compressed air must be mentioned when compared to laser and NIR technology. Laser – industrial level production In case of laser technology, the surfaces to be bonded are melted with a laser ray (diode laser) and subsequently pressed directly on the workpiece. The classic diode laser technology is linked to enormous investment costs. However, it is possible to achieve speed rates of up to 60m/min. Manufacturing companies work primarily with this technology for this reason. With Imalux, Ima has been offerring laser technology since 2015. It can be procured at significantly more economical costs, which also enables trade businesses to enter the field of industrial manufacturing processes. Near-infrared radiation (NIR) technology With its LTronic units, Holz-Her offers a zero bondline technology that works with a near infrared radiation module. The transmission of thermal energy to the functional layer of the edging is accurate to the point with

this technology. Feed speed rates of up to 25m/min are possible. A significant advantage of this technology is the direct availability of the machine. Moreover, this technology offers a quick and simple change between classic bonding and zero bondline processing. The combination of NIR and water-resistant PU bonding material can be called the ideal combination. As compared to modern hot air technology, energy consumption is lower due to the direct availability. Procurement costs of edgebanding machines with NIR technology lie between those for laser and hot air technology. Europe‘s largest range for zero bondline All zero bondline technologies require use of edgings that have a special functional layer for processing. With the laser, the Airtec and the Infratec edging, Ostermann has its own edging solution for every processing technology. Moreover, the companies need edgings in different colours, décors and with varying surface finishes as production is getting more and more customised. “Ostermann sees itself as a specialist for small delivery quantities,“ says Stephen, “and therefore specialises in the quick delivery of zero bondline edgings.” The alternative: bonding edgings with PUR Especially thin water- and heat-resistant joints can also be produced with PUR hot melt adhesives, as PUR adhesive reacts with the moisture in the surrounding air and hardens chemically. This results in the formation of the highest bond force between edging and board. Edgebanding with PUR adhesive is therefore especially to be recommended for kitchen, bath and laboratory furniture with very high quality requirements due to the optimum heat resistance (up to 150°C) as well as water and chemical resistance. Optical zero bondlines are possible at the best possible setting of machine and adhesive application. The quantity of adhesive application is approximately 150g/m², but here too it depends on the board material. PUR adhesives can usually be processed on the same systems as EVA hot melt adhesives. Systems with zero bondline technologies generally also have a classic hotmelt adhesive tank. An adhesive tank with teflon coating, or even better, a removable tank, has proven worthwhile due to the simpler cleaning. The additional costs for processing PUR adhesive are minimal. And do not forget, it is very important that the adhesive tank and the application roller must be cleaned thoroughly before PUR adhesive hardens. 01905 793550 www.ostermann.eu

New video tutorial for Redocol spray contact adhesive Ostermann has posted a new how-to video for spray contact adhesive on its YouTube channel. The video shows various materials being bonded together using the Redocol spray contact adhesive in a portable tank. It concludes with some tips on how to store the adhesive and clean the spray nozzle. The Redocol spray contact adhesive in a portable tank is suitable for bonding a number of surfaces. One key advantage of this portable container is the ability to spray directly without needing a compressed air supply. The adhesive is easily applied using a nozzle and hose, as the container is already pressurised. Ostermann’s new three-minute video tutorial shows how simple the process is. OstermannTV on YouTube provides interested joiners/carpenters with answers to many carpentry questions. How quickly and easily can one edge round panels and moulded parts? And what is Ostermann Infratec edging? Ostermann’s YouTube channel offers practical videos on all these topics. www.ostermann.eu

With over 35 years’ experience, and its position in the marketplace as the only major company able to supply edgebanding machines plus a complete spectrum of edging materials and adhesives, Ney is the ideal match for any manufacturer.

Finding the perfect match Customers often pop into Ney to collect consumables – these visitors will have seen the extensive warehousing where rolls of edging are sorted for immediate dispatch. Ney’s pre-gluing line enables unglued edging to be coated with hot melt to order. The company also offers one-off colours and can have customers’ edging material faceprinted with any images required. If customers have the board reference Ney should have the edging. Ney supplies melamine, PVC, ABS, Polyester Acrylic Polypropylene, real wood veneers and of course the latest Fusion edging. Get stuck into Ney adhesives Whether customers are applying edgebanding using EVA or PUR, the correct selection of adhesive is imperative. At Ney, after extensive trials with its suppliers, the Coventry firm has formulated the most suitable adhesives to meet every conceivable customer requirement. Ney adhesives match edgebander speed requirements as well as the distance from tape pick-up to the first pressure roller so that the open time, which is so critical, is not compromised. It must be emphasised that ‘a one-adhesivefits-all’ scenario does not exist. Ney’s range includes black, opaque and natural colour to keep the finished products aesthetically appealing. PUR (polyurethane reactive) adhesive technology is the ultimate solution where high bond strength and moisture resistance is required. This high bond strength chemical

cross link is maintained for panels that are to be used in wet or humid environments, when EVA would be unsuitable. A pleasing side effect is the visibly reduced glue line achievable compared to EVA. It should be noted that the use of incorrect adhesives on edgebanders can cause a major increase in costs with regard to maintenance as well as increased downtime and loss of production. To rub salt into the wound, as many edgebander owners will testify, the risk of delamination further down the line is a manufacturer’s worst nightmare. Needless to say, poor quality glues with high filler content should be avoided like the plague. Ney’s has all edgebanding formats covered Edgebanders come in many formats – all with the common goal to apply and finish edging made with increasingly variable materials, textures and grains. In order to ensure the best results on this plethora of differing constituents, machines can be equipped with anti-adherent and cleaning agents to guarantee a perfect panel off the end of the machine and eliminating the need for any hand finishing. Ney presents the EBM Airtronic edgebander with seamless edgebanding technology. EBM from Germany first produced the KDP 118 SLK more than a decade ago and has achieved legendary status among manufacturers throughout the UK. The latest development of this impressive machine is the KDP 117 SLK-P which targets the most demanding user

who expects a finished panel straight off the machine. The KDP 117 SLK-P boasts maintenance-free gravity feed glue pot with quick drain device which allows it to work with both EVA and PUR adhesive or the Airtronic system whereby compressed air is superheated and forced against the backing of the Fusion edging to create the perfect seamless, hygienic joint. The control panel stores all working parameters with individual program names easily recalled and edited by the operator. This is Ney’s flagship machine and, pound for pound, probably the best machine on sale in the UK today. The results are impressive and consistent.

“It must be emphasised that ‘a one-adhesivefits-all’ scenario does not exist”

Next generation edgebanding technology Edgebanding machinery sourced from industry leader Fravol from Italy, a family-owned company, provide Ney with all the solutions for modern day manufacturing. Ney works closely together on all aspects of the edgebanding process which is how the next generation of ideas evolve. When a truly industrial machine is called for, Fravol provides fast machines at the cutting edge of technology for standard edging materials and its solid wood lipping capability is second to none for the fire door market. Fravol utilises a patented universal Tefloncoated gluing unit for the application of PUR or EVA either granular or in solid cartridges. The sealed pneumatically operated pre-melt system force feeds adhesive to the glue roller on demand; the complete gluepot assembly can be simply removed and stored in the nitrogen/ freezer compartment for re work the next day eliminating purging or cleaning on a daily basis. The glue roller runs in graphite bearings and has a smooth roller surface which allows the glue dosage to be minimal to achieve visibly tight edging joints. PUR machines are fitted with a complete Riepe anti-adherent and cleaning pack for worry-free edgebanding and a perfect result to give that zero glue line appearance.

The shape of things to come The award-winning Vitap Eclipse has gone from strength to strength within the industry. Edging and trimming of shaped panels has always been an issue for all sizes of manufacturers and the current trend for softer curves, particularly within the caravan industry, has resulted in an increased demand for this type of machine. The Eclipse is a semi-automatic machine designed to edge and trim both concave and convex panels from 200-2400mm in diameter with a panel thickness range of 10-60mm when using 1-2mm edging tape and 10-35mm with 3mm tape. With its simple interchangeable vacuum table fitted on the pendulum arm, most sizes and shapes of panel can be edged and trimmed, and with the automatic laser cut-off, changing over to closed shapes is easily achieved without the need for measurement, producing an accurate joint every time. For smaller panels or straight line edging and trimming the Eclipse comes complete with adjustable height worktables in front of the tape and the trimming areas for manual operation. The trimming station is fitted with two 15,000rpm high frequency motors and pneumatic opening between them allows easy introduction of the panel. A pneumatic tilting device gives greater clearance when executing large shaped components.

Glue application comes from a 1kg glue pot fitted with two 800W heating elements with electronic temperature control with an option of an automatic glue feeder controlled by sensor for longer runs and less operator intervention. On panels with multiple curves the need for speed control becomes vital; this is achieved on the Eclipse by using the combination of a potentiometer for processing speed and automatic slowdown by laser. The laser is positioned above the panel to be worked and will automatically reduce the speed as the curve is detected. The Eclipse comes with a tape roll support and has a seven inch touchscreen controller incorporating job list facility, manual or auto selection and parameters for the laser. A small footprint allows the machine to fit comfortably into smaller workshops and the flexibility would suit a range of manufacturers including KBB, caravan, office, shopfitting and display. Ney remains at customers’ disposal and is able to provide expert technical advice on any specific edging, application or machine. Also, being centrally-located in Coventry, Ney is easy to access. New customers should also be aware that finance is readily available, subject to status, for any new or used machinery purchase. 024 7630 8100 ney.co.uk

Döllken continues to underscore its position as a pioneer in edgebanding products and solutions by offering surprising new possibilities for contemporary furniture design …

Microwave edgebanding technology refines zero-joint technology Thanks to Döllken’s new joint processes, furniture manufacturers now enjoy visual zero joint, no additional hot melt adhesive, safer production and increased productivity – but the use of these processes for the coating of narrow surfaces also required a new edgebanding technology. With Fusion-Edge, Döllken has developed a completely new generation of edgeband – what it calls the “seamless unity of edgeband and board”, which requires no additional hot melt adhesive. But how has Döllken achieved this? The answer is closer than one might think. The microwave was accidentally discovered over

70 years ago by the American Percy Spencer, who discovered that the waves produced by a magnetron would also heat food. Today, 50 years after its commercial launch, the appliance now found in most kitchens is also revolutionising zero joint technology in woodworking machines. Working in close partnership with a leading producer of woodworking machines, Döllken developed the edgebands for this joining technology during a research project, The expertise present in Fusion-Edge is reflected in particular in its functional coating. This applies especially to the development of the formula for the functional coating in this

innovative process. As everyone knows from their own experience, plastics are difficult to heat in a microwave. Now, Döllken’s engineers have succeeded in developing a meltable and adhesive layer which can be heated in a microwave. According to Döllken, adhesion values, appearance and joint tightness are comparable to those achieved using the laser process – the premium coating of Fusion-Edge is eminently suitable for the Wavetec process. Döllken’s development engineers came up with a formulation for the functional coating which is significantly easier to process, and was made marketable in an extensive series

14 EDGEBANDING

of tests. Essentially, the microwave process has achieved a comparable quality to laser application, with regard to mechanical reworking, UV resistance, dirt repellence, etc. And this development is not limited to microwave edgebands – the improved formulation is now being used in all Döllken Fusion-Edge edging, which now benefits all customers. This new technology reinforces the high-tech nature of Döllken’s Fusion-Edge, and this is reflected in special production processes and tolerances. The perfect rectangular edgeband form guarantees the customer a perfect invisible joint – and, thanks to the pioneering production process’ all-round calibration, sink marks can be ruled out. All of this gives both manufacturer and customer the reassurance that they are using a reliable, premium-quality product from Döllken. info@doellken.com doellken-kv.com

EDGEBANDING 17

From the smallest edgebanders to the largest production solution, the full range of edgebanders from Holz-Her offers choice without compromise, and each delivers a fine glue line as standard.

Holz-Her’s effortless edgebanding for a PURfect finish

Holz-Her Lumina 1588 – the Lumina 1588 performance remains highly flexible, allowing adaptation to specific requirements

All Holz-Her edgebanders come with HolzHer’s patented and award-winning Glu Jet system as standard, delivering one-of-a-kind edging results with ultra-thin glue joints – near equivalent to industrial laser edges. The hybrid technology, combined with Holz-Her thin film technology, enables visual zero joints with PUR glue, ideal for wet and humid areas including bathrooms, student accommodation and kitchen environments. The Glu Jet system is fast, heating up in just four minutes. It only uses 2.3kW of energy - a huge saving in both time and energy compared with a typical heating system that needs 6kW. As it is so quick to heat up, the glue does not simmer. Every time EVA is heated and cooled, around 10% of its power is lost, but as the Glu Jet system only heats up what is needed, effectiveness of the adhesive is not compromised. This is industrial technology for all – from the Holz-Her Streamer 1053 at under £20,000 to the Accura range from over £100,000, customers can also process PUR glue as standard, without the hassle. As the benchmark for professional cabinetmakers, most manufacturers would use PUR, but not all machinery can cope with the demands of the polymer reaction which forms such strong and thin waterproof, temperaturetolerant bonds. PUR is difficult to manage with a standard glue pot and molecular cross-linking becomes a problem. ›

But it does not stop there. With the new Holz-Her Lumina series comes an option for the LTronic system – the laser edging unit from Holz-Her, which is unbeatable in terms of speed and cost efficiency. The NIR (Near Infrared Radiation) module in Holz-Her’s LTronic unit transfers heat energy quickly and precisely to the specific point

required, making it ideal for the activation of function layers on laser edging. Two different NIR modules are available – the standard module for edge heights up to 23mm, or the optional NIR+ module for edge heights up to 45mm. It is ready to use as soon as it is switched on – there is no heat-up time or any heat-up phases

during the machining process. In addition, the complete system operates absolutely silently, offering a huge advantage over other noisy systems. With the integrated protective plate on the NIR module only needing to be briefly cleaned just once a week, the system is a pioneer in terms of energy efficiency. With the Holz-Her Lumina series, the user can switch from glue to laser in minutes. Using the high precision HSK interface from Holz-Her’s CNC technology, at the push of a button and serial bus connectors, two dedicated carriages enable units to simply slide on and off. Changing from laser to PUR or EVA could not be easier, and Holz-Her’s solution was designed to ensure the gluing station is always as close as possible to the pressing station, eliminating the chance of ‘glue shock’ and subsequent production problems. This simple change-over also enables any preventative maintenance or service to the system not in use, with zero down time. Indeed, the Lumina has an automatic unit recognition feature and is ready for use immediately after changing over to the LTronic. The change-over time from edge to edge is under five minutes. 01235 557600 sales@weinig.co.uk holzher.co.uk

Entry level edge banding with the 1100-1200 series The entry-level range is designed to aid smaller manufacturers by speeding up production processes. Not only do the machines reduce reliance on manual labour but they also produce consistently high-quality work.

The Ambition 1440 airTec – powerful edge banding for mid-sized businesses

Designed for the smaller workshops, the machines are compact in footprint yet powerful with advanced technology and tools. Reaching feed speeds of 8-11m/min, the entry level range of edge banders is certain to reduce production times. All machines are equipped with a precise gluing unit for quick, solid gluing and an automatic fixed length magazine for reliable material infeed. In addition, the machines also feature three available tool units with options including profile scraper blade, glue joint scraper blade and buffing unit. These tools can be positioned in varying combinations in order to achieve the desired finish. With the addition of Homag’s easyTouch control system, it is simple to set up the 11001200 range for effective results. Embodying a new generation of operating systems, the touchscreen surface guarantees fast and easy navigation. The 1400-1800 series – edge banding for medium-sized manufacturers Targeted at mid-sized businesses, the 14001800 series of edge banders is the next level up in the Homag range. Building on the impressive standard features of the entry level models, the range is equipped to cope with common manufacturing demands. Characterised by their high level of automation and a comprehensive range of processing

units, the mid-range level edge banders provide a high degree of flexibility. This enables them to be adjusted to manufacturers’ specific needs in order to meet bespoke production requirements. Additionally, the machines can be equipped with units for pre-milling, gluing, snipping, profile trimming, grooving and finish processing for high speed and precision. Using powerTouch, Homag’s innovative control system, the mid-level range of edge banders is equipped with a widescreen HD touch screen monitor for fast set-up and simplified operation. With easy to use navigation and a standardised interface, Homag’s software helps improve production efficiency. Industrial edge banding with the 2200-2600 series For industrial manufacturers, Homag has developed a range of edge banders which can achieve feed speeds of up to 20-25m/min for optimum productivity. The top-end range allows companies with higher output targets to tailor their productivity to meet demands. Building on the technology which comes as standard throughout the line, the 2270-2600 models can be used for edge gluing, precise snipping and finishing processing. The series is also capable of the rounding of faces on a wide number of materials. The equipment packages available permit the adaption of the machines for a broad range of different requirements, thus making light work of a variety of production demands. Edge banding and combination systems In order to process large quantities at fast speeds, Homag has developed a range of double-sided edge banders. These offer extremely high output and minimal resetting processes. The K 620 powerLine series sizes and edges furniture workpieces at feed speeds of up to 100m/min with minimal workpiece gaps for high output. These high volume machines are completely modular and can be constructed according to individual customer requirements. They can be configured as a standalone machine or fully integrated into a complete production line. The machines have tremendous capacity and are ideal for manufacturers that run edge banders for long periods of time each day. Designed using Homag’s ecoPlus energy-

saving system, the machines are extremely cost effective with low running costs. Automated solutions for pairing with your edge bander Homag’s range of edge banders can be paired with automated handling solutions such as its Boomerang return conveyors for higher productivity and increased efficiency. These units will free up manpower in a facility as the system can be operated by a single person. With less handling of manual parts, the risk of damage to workpieces is significantly reduced. Homag has a Boomerang return system for each size of edge bander. Selecting the appropriate bonding system To achieve the desired edge finish, picking the correct bonding method is just as important as selecting the right machine. Homag has a range of bonding systems available including EVA and PUR glue, airTec and laserTec. For quick yet secure bonds, Homag has developed a range of gluing units for both EVA or PUR glue. They provide an ideal solution for a fast, strong bond. The heated glue roller ensures an optimum gluing temperature. On request, the gluing unit can also be individually equipped with a PU pre-melting unit which allows the rapid changeover between two different colours or PU. For durability, Homag’s PUR glue system provides a cross linked bond which withstands moisture as well as being heat resistant.

The Homag K620 double-sided edge bander for industrial output at high speeds

For high quality furniture manufacturers, the airTec edge banders take finish quality to another level. They provide the optimum solution wherever an optimum zero joint is required. By bonding the edge and panel with Homag’s glueless hot air system, it provides an incredibly tight ‘invisible’ joint seal. Homag’s airTec system is now available for entry-level machines bringing invisible joint technology within reach of all levels of business. For the ultimate edge finish, Homag’s laserTec system is the optimum solution. A laser beam is used to melt the pre-glued edge tape which is then pressed directly onto the workpiece. Ideal for medium- to industrial-sized manufacturers, laserTec provides an optical zero joint for a high-end finish. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at Homag, concludes: “Here at Homag, we have an extensive range of edge banders and we recognise how daunting this can be if you’re not sure which machine you need. Our dedicated sales specialists will analyse your production and company goals to work with you to decide on best bespoke solution for your business. This way, we can help you eliminate any concerns about investing in the wrong equipment.” To speak to an edge bander sales specialist or for a demonstration of the Homag range, contact Adele Hunt at Homag on 01332 856424. 01332 856500 homag.com

Rehau is looking to a post-Brexit future, and underpinning its UK manufacturing capability for ABS and Raukantex edgings is a key element of its commitment to UK manufacturers. We asked Russell Hand, head of furniture UK & Ireland at Rehau, to talk about the company’s agenda.

Rehau edges ahead of the field

EDGEBANDING 27

www.furnitureproduction.net

The past decade has witnessed significant growth within the furniture manufacturing industry, creating increasingly competitive and demanding market conditions. Furniture producers in the kitchen, office and shopfitting sectors are also looking for stability and certainty from their raw material and component suppliers – especially in light of the recent referendum decision to leave the European Union. The increase in market demand coupled with requests for ever more detailed and decorative surface designs has seen a rise in the popularity of polymer edgebands, particularly in the material polypropylene (PP), which is a durable, flexible and stylish material that provides the finishing touch to furniture design. Rehau is the only manufacturer of polymer edgebands in the UK and is seeking to address the question of supply chain stability and future design trends by making a largescale investment to expand the capabilities of its factory in North Wales. This will not only empower customers to buy British – backed by German engineering – but also significantly reduce lead times compared to products imported from overseas. Here Russell Hand, head of furniture UK & Ireland at Rehau, discussed the firm’s renewed commitment to British furnituremakers, both big and small. “Since 1975, Rehau has been producing extruded products at our Amlwch factory in North Wales. During that time it has been necessary to continuously invest in the very latest technologies to adapt to ever-changing market conditions. “Our customers trust Rehau to provide the very highest quality, innovative products and delivery reliability. In fact our Rehau Group vision is built around those three key words – trust, innovation and reliability. “In recent years we have witnessed a great rise in demands from our industry both in terms

of volumes but also product complexity. This coupled with the recent decision regarding Brexit could leave some feeling uncertain about the country’s furniture manufacturing capabilities and the relevant supply chain. This uncertainty has raised questions around sourcing materials, long lead times and unexpected prices increases – all of which can have a hugely detrimental effect on the bottom line. “ABS and PP edgebands, particularly those which can be used with zero joint technology (ie laser or hot-air), are becoming increasingly popular and therefore Rehau has taken the decision to expand our UK production in these areas. “Work is already under way on a £1m investment in our UK factory to increase existing capacity in ABS and for the first time, produce locally the class-leading zero-joint edgeband: Raukantex PP Pro (formerly known as Laseredge). “As well as creating new jobs within the local economy, this further investment in our UK

manufacturing site will help to dramatically reduce lead times for our customers and ensure that edgeband supply is not an obstacle for them post-Brexit. “Rehau is already the only manufacturer producing polymer edgebands in the UK and understands the needs of its customers to continue to deliver high quality product and ensure supply chain security. We are therefore committed to working with customers as our partners – and welcome customer involvement at every development stage. “This large-scale investment allows Rehau’s UK team to offer customers increased stability in terms of supply by developing our own local infrastructure, whilst always retaining the market-leading quality of our products. “Ultimately we are seeking to offer a local solution for our UK customers yet still maintain the support and technical know-how from the global Rehau Group. “Of course, alongside this new UK investment and development, Rehau will continue to produce our wider range of edgeband products in Germany, and remain passionate about keeping up to date with the latest UK and European board and laminate trends. “The complete portfolio included in our Rehau Express Collection offers over 20,000 colours and designs, which are available in large or small quantities and in dimensions up to 104mm. The stock range is completed with the premium quality, zero joint edgeband, Raukantex Pro. Using a 100% polymer functional layer which is melted using hot air, laser or other zero joint technologies, a permanent and seamless bond is created between the board and the edgeband. “This extensive product offering is complemented by a national sales team and warehouse in the UK with dedicated on-site technical support from Rehau’s UK-based applications engineer. Unlike other industries where your product passes a multitude of touchpoints, with Rehau it’s safely in our hands from start to finish.” rehau.com

SCM, a market specialist in softforming edgebanding, has used its expertise to open up new and surprising possibilities in furniture design – in particular, the J-Shape softforming technology allows for an overall improvement in furniture quality.

J-Shape technology – the best softforming solution

The impressive Stefani SZ

Machines fitted with the J-Shape technology allow even small-to medium-sized companies to produce, with high production volumes and limited costs, furniture that uses the latest materials with a high level of design. For example, handles can be integrated in the door or drawer profile for cleaner finishes and decorations; or tops and table surfaces can be produced with profiles tilted by up to 60° inwards, to create unprecedented feelings of lightness. Maximum aesthetic cleanliness of the assembled furniture can be achieved by producing the components of the box and the doors with the joints of the edges at 45°, thus creating perfect volumes. This led the SCM J-Shape edgebanding solution to winning the first prize at the XIAXylexpo Innovation Awards. The jury, made up of experts from the sector, awarded the Stefani technology for its ability to: “provide

an excellent solution to the demands of the market for edgebanding ergonomic profiles, whilst reducing the operating space, using polyurethane adhesives with small curvature radii and thick edges”. Amongst the features of the J-Shape is the ability of creating furniture that marries aesthetics with technological components. For example, it allows edges to be applied to surfaces with thickness up to 2mm, guaranteeing high levels of resistance of the part in day to day use. Edging with J-Shape technology guarantees the long life of the components, even in the most demanding environments such as kitchens, where humidity and heat test the resistance of the finishings. SCM is undertaking an important research project, in partnership with the main European manufacturers of materials for the furniture

industry, in order to approve the J-Shape process for the widest range of materials possible, guaranteeing its leadership and guiding role in this sector. Stefani SZ – flexible squaring-edgebanding cell Stefani SZ is SCM’s latest edgebanding solution for semi-intensive production contexts and flexible production batches. This new all-in-one cell can be operated with a single operator, thus providing a true competitive advantage. Stefani SZ is the result of SCM’s in-depth knowledge of flexible edgebanding cells. Compact and high performing: in a space of 85m2, for the basic configuration, a single operator can produce 600 finished panels/shift, for components either from the nesting cycle or from the sheet cutting. Modular and efficient: Stefani SZ is designed to be integrated in different operating situations,

functional to different company requirements. For example, it can be integrated with a rear pick-up to automatically unload the finished panels on stacks, or it can be fitted with complete automation for the panel return to the operator loading zone, to lower overall machining times. Precise and dynamic: specific technical solutions guarantee maximum quality of the final furniture assembly in all its parts, even the largest such as the sides and doors. Repeatability and machining precision became a guaranteed added value for all furniture components up to 2500 x 1200mm (3200 x1200mm opt). Stefani SZ augments the extensive range of flexible and hyper-flexible edgebanding solutions, such as the Stefani AZ, AZ+, FZ and Lean Cell cells. scmgroup.com

SMC Wholesale offers a wide range of edgebanding solutions, and boasts extensive market experience. Based just off the M5 in Exeter, SMC services customers across the UK and Ireland, and specialises in pre-glued materials, developed in-house. The company is also able to slit its own edging materials to bespoke widths.

Strong portfolio and flexible service keep SMC ahead

Founded by MD Frank Scriven nearly 35 years ago, the family-run company is immersed in edgebanding – more than half of its team have been with SMC for 10 years or more, lending it the combined experience of nearly 150 years. SMC stocks over 80 different decors in the melamine range, and a further 15 real wood veneer edgebands, including venners up to 2mm thick and 50mm wide. SMC also offers a plastic edging range, which more closely reflects modern market demand. Today’s customers seek a wide range of decors, in both colours and woodgrains, and SMC stocks an overall range of over 400 at present. “We actively work to keep our plastic edgebanding range up to date and contemporary, collaborating with manufacturers such as Bridec, Egger, Kronospan, Finsa, Polyrey, Hornitex, Depalor, Pfleiderer and Sonae,” comments a company spokesperson. “Our excellent relationships with our board manufacturers, built up over 50 years, mean that SMC is one of the first in the marketplace to bring out matching edgings to new board ranges.”

EDGEBANDING 41

www.furnitureproduction.net

SMC also sells a range of Blum products and sticky cover caps (to replace the Phillips push-in caps), and the company hopes to be able to provide FSC-regulated veneers later this year. As well as a wealth of product options, SMC is known for its flexible service portfolio. With over 25 years’ experience in glue coating, its is known industry-wide for its custom glue coating operations – but SMC also has two slitting machines, one for thin materials (0.4-1mm for plastics, veneers and melamine), and a second for slitting materials up to 2mm, mainly aimed at the plastic market. The business also offers a bespoke hand-matching service. “We have changed our model over the years to suit our customers, and are now fulfilling a just-in-time service through dedicated delivery partners,” says the spokesperson. “We also have an interactive web store being launched in the first half of 2018 – the first of its kind in the industry, targeting the retail market and individuals who used to buy through merchants

SMC stocks over 400 decors

but are struggling with the industry’s opening hours.” The large number of local customers that collect their orders from SMC in person has also led the company to plan the opening of an official trade counter next year. When looking for the best edgebanding product and choosing the right supplier, manufacturers have been impressed by SMC Wholesale’s offer, valuing its honesty around colour matching highly, and enjoying the highquality service the company provides. They are also drawn to the supplier by the quality of products it offers. “Product quality is really important to us,” says the spokesperson. “Any problems with gluing or the material will harm our well-built reputation. We’ve been buying from the same suppliers for years. “Delivery speed is also very important to our customers, with most customers requiring nextday delivery, which we provide.

“SMC has a long-standing brand, and have been using the same well-recognised logo from the start, making us easy to find for repeat buys. We make sure that we are available to everyone – this has included a big push on social media in the last 12 months.” Indeed, many of SMC Wholsesale’s diverse customer base – covering merchants, manufacturers and fitters, and including a good number of Irish clients – have been with the business since its foundation. It supports customers with special bespoke packaging for resellers, and direct deliveries for the larger board merchants and their customers. Most orders are shipped the same day, providing next-day delivery where required. “We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone that has supported us over the last 35 years,” says the company spokesperson. “To all our customers and suppliers, big and small, everyone, thank you for your continued custom and loyalty. We really enjoy working with you, and we look forward to helping you the next time you need edging.” 01392 217635 sales@smcwholesale.co.uk

Ongoing investment in staffing, services and storage capacity is helping European edgings giant Hranipex build considerable momentum in the UK. Furniture Production paid the company’s Solihull headquarters a visit to discover why it is fast becoming the supplier of choice for a growing number of factories and wholesalers across the nation …

Edging ahead of the competition Amidst the pressure of today’s competitive manufacturing sector, Hranipex offers one less reason to hold up the production line. If your edging supplies are running low, just call the company’s service team or visit its online shop to order whatever you need from some 1500 décors held in UK stock, and they’ll be delivered the next day – as early as 9am if necessary.

By extending call centre opening hours, and increasing the size of the office-based sales team to lend further support to its reps on the road, Hranipex is working hard towards delivering its clients one-to-one support. And it’s not just last-minute production run rescues that show how seriously Hranipex takes its UK customer service. There’s the freedom to order carefully-matched edgings from lengths of just 1m, and the promise of free delivery on any orders over £50, but, crucially, there’s a best-inclass product offer behind it all. The manufacturer and distributor of furniture edgings, adhesives, cleaning agents and spraying devices produces over 6,000,000m of edgings each month, and offers some 60,000 SKUs, ranging from the most popular on-trend colours to the most specific niche designs. Orders are fulfilled from capacious UK stocks – Hranipex bolstered its storage space by 500% last year – and any orders that aren’t held locally can be sourced from the company’s parent factory in the Czech Republic within just seven days. Since its foundation in 1993, Hranipex has become a key player in numerous European markets, operating through 11 subsidiaries plus various dealerships – so its will to succeed in the UK is reinforced by a well-established central operation. Hranipex may have opened its Solihull office just six years ago, but the company’s drive to improve customer engagement through unrivalled product and service quality has won it countless happy customers since. They include kitchen, bedroom and study furniture manufacturer DC Interiors, based in Maltby in South Yorkshire. “Quality, service and flexibility are key to our success,” says DC co-founder David Silkstone, echoing the Czech edgings supplier’s

ethos.“Customer expectations are high, as are ours – it goes without saying that we expect the same from our suppliers. “The Hranipex connection started when they began to supply our ABS edgebanding. At the time we didn’t know that they actually manufactured the edging themselves!” After purchasing a new edgebander, DC Interiors experienced some issues with the glue it had always used. David says: “We phoned Hranipex and the following morning their MD Petr Zmatlo was in our workshop, sleeves rolled up, offering expert technical advice, testing and recommending the correct glue for our machine … since then, we’ve never looked back.” According to David, DC generally places its orders through the Hranipex e-shop, and the goods are delivered the next working day. “Their website makes matching easy,” he says, “as their range of edgings is vast – as is their collection of cleaners and contact adhesives, which we also now purchase.” This strong product offer is backed up with excellent customer service, and it’s this combination of strengths which has persuaded DC to stick with Hranipex as its edgings supplier of choice. “If we do need to call them, we know that expert advice is always at hand,” explains David. “We chose Hranipex above other suppliers for many reasons – expert technical knowledge, professional yet friendly approach, quality of product – but above all it was for their reliability and quality of service, which is second to none.” With a continually growing sales and operations team, and a wealth of industry experience drawn from the UK and beyond, Hranipex is operating from its strongest platform to date – and it’s at your service. hranipex.co.uk

For manufacturers wishing to buy an edgebander, a new machine would be great, but perhaps is not affordable – and a used machine comes with all the inherent associated risks. Ferwood UK offers the best of both worlds – top-brand edgebanders reconditioned to the highest standards, complete with the comfort of six months’ warranty.

Reconditioning the world’s biggest edgebander brands

Ferwood reconditions edgebanders from world-leading brands including Homag, Brandt, IMA, Biesse, Holz-Her and SCM at its factory near Turin, Italy. The company offers them to the UK market through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Ferwood UK. All machines undergo the Ferwood 10-step reconditioning process to carry the prestigious Ferwood Approved logo. Ferwood UK offers single-sided edgebanders with pre-milling and full PVC specification for medium production, from the likes of Brandt, Holz-Her, Biesse and SCM. There are also higher performance single-sided machines with automated setting including PUR gluing systems, from Homag, IMA, Biesse and Stefani.

In addition, Ferwood UK offers double-sided edgebanders, and combination squaring and edgebanding or soft-forming lines supplied complete with automated panel handling systems – Homag, IMA, Stefani and Biesse are also available. With over 50 years’ combined experience of supplying edgebanding machines, the sales team of Ferwood UK is ideally placed to identify customers’ requirements and make machine recommendations, not based on brand, but
