Defined by attitude In this issue, we look forward to a clutch of in-house events with Biesse, Homag and AMS all starting on the 26th September and Daltons Wadkin beginning on 3rd October. Whilst talking events, some members of the Furniture & Joinery Production team will be at Sicam in October and ZOW in February next year. Alongside this, we have features on panels, software, CNC machinery and materials handling plus the usual news, company updates and installation articles. There are two positive articles this month featuring the successful panel business, Starbank Panel Products. An update article focuses on how the Merseyside firm delivers high quality, value for money products whilst delivering high service standards. The other is an installation piece about recent technological investment in materials handling, featuring a Votecs shredder and Barbaric lifting and handling systems. In combination, both articles serve to illustrate a company which is displaying a thorough understanding of what it takes to succeed in its marketplace. A wonderful example of a great attitude and a desire to put the customer uppermost in their thinking, Starbank appears to be running its business on very solid business principles – principles which which anyone can buy into. As with all business sectors there are winners and there are losers – those that are getting things right, and those that, for a variety of reasons, do not. Success in business is not a divine right, and there will be specific reasons why businesses do not prosper – market conditions, Brexit, the weather, staff issues, skills shortages and so forth – these issues afflict all businesses, so what’s the difference between triumph and frustration?

Predominantly, I believe the underlying issue is one of attitude – a positive mind-set to business where the leadership is clear and present, the objectives shared, the strategy well-conceived and the atmosphere positive will give any business the wherewithal to overcome reasonable business challenges. I remember when starting out in this business many moons ago and my charge-hand kept on to me about ‘do things right, the first time’ and ‘always put myself in the customer’s shoes’ and other such seemingly obvious adages – but when you look in the mirror, these and other guiding principles will apply to almost any business situation. Hackneyed phrases they might be, but manufacturers looking to succeed in an era with stellar design work, super-efficient manufacturing, first-rate logistics, a proper customer-engagement setup and an outward-looking management and positive state of mind will undoubtedly be better prepared to tackle the myriad challenges which the industry will face up to in the coming years. Getting the attitude of your business right is without doubt a key to its longevity and success – seems an obvious thing to say really …

The second place will receive a £500 voucher. There will also be a £100 voucher each for a further five runners-up. Dr Tony Smart MBE says: “The Axminster Design & Make Competition is a superb opportunity for students to put the skills they’ve learnt at university to practical use and develop a piece of furniture that they think conveys innovation. “We can’t thank our partner and sponsor, Axminster Tools & Machinery, enough for funding this exciting competition that will give young makers around the UK the chance to bring a design to life and have it showcased on a national level through its stores and publicised by The Furniture Makers’ Company.” Alan Styles, managing director at Axminster Tools & Machinery, says: “Once again we are delighted to be able to work with and support The Furniture Makers’ Company. Blum reports revenue increase of 8% in the financial year 2016/2017 Innovative products, international market presence, consistent investments worldwide and highly flexible employees are the factors that have once more helped the Blum group to a revenue increase in the financial year 2016/2017. The family enterprise reports an increase of 8% compared to the previous year. With a revenue increase of 8% to €1788.08m, fittings manufacturer Blum reports a successful conclusion to the financial year of 2016/2017, which ended on 30th June. Innovative products, international market presence, consistent investments in R&D and highly qualified staff mean that the family enterprise headquartered in Höchst, Austria, can celebrate a revenue increase that is worth its name. 48% of the company turnover was generated within the EU, 16% in the US. Blum supplies 120 markets all over the world, making it one of Austria’s largest export companies.

In June 2017, the company won the prestigious Austrian export prize, the Global Player Award, in recognition of its outstanding performance in exports. Employees as the basis of success “The high level of motivation of our worldwide team and the excellent co-operation of all departments and organisations within our group are an essential building block of our success,” says CEO Gerhard E Blum, summing up the fundamental importance that Blum attaches to its employees. During the past financial year, 7140 persons on average worked for the fittings manufacturer, an increase of 291 people compared to the previous year. On 1st September, 93 new apprentices will start their technical training at Blum Austria, 15 of them girls. This corresponds to a 16% increase of the number of female apprentices compared to the previous year. In total, Blum has

been training 341 apprentices within the group since last autumn, 16 of whom work at Blum USA. Three new Business Trainees started in the UK as part of an initiative to increase training throughout the business. Growth rates in all market regions During the past financial year, the fittings manufacturer based in Vorarlberg has seen growth rates across all market regions. For instance, most markets in Western Europe reported an increase in sales. The only exception was Great Britain, where the falling rate of the pound caused an artificial decline due to the value of sterling against the euro. In fact the overall market delivered an increase in sterling revenue in line with Blum’s worldwide performance. Eastern Europe continued to thrive, with growth figures also reported for Russia and Turkey. The fittings specialist also achieved excellent results for North America and the Asia-Pacific region. Throughout the financial year of 2016/2017, material prices remained a challenge. Steel prices soared towards late 2016, followed by zinc, packaging materials and other listed commodities. Investments during the financial year 2016/2017 Total investments of the Blum group in the financial year 2016/2017 amounted to €174.62m.

In Vorarlberg, two construction phases of plant 4 in Bregenz were completed. Construction work on the future plant 8 in Dornbirn, the new Blum stamping centre, is in full swing. With €66m, this project constitutes the largest single investment in the company’s history. The first production hall is scheduled to be operational by mid-2018; the second construction phase should be completed by summer 2019. Plant 2 in Höchst will also include a new administrative building, with employees set to move in by the end of 2018. An important share of Blum investments goes into the expansion of international Blum marketing organisations. In the UK the Experience Centre opened in September 2016. In Greece, the company has commenced operation of its new

office and warehouse complex; in Australia, the expansion of the automated warehouse has been completed, and the new highbay warehouse in Poland will be operational by the end of this year. Preservation of resources is a key priority for all Blum construction projects, for instance through low-impact structures with several storeys to save space. An industrial enterprise committed to the environment The careful handling of environmental resources has always been important to Blum. During the past financial year, the company succeeded in reducing its energy consumption by 31,412,000kWh, the equivalent of approximately 5150 tonnes of CO2. This is made possible through decade-long investments in environmentally friendly technologies, for instance a ventilation and pressurised air system with waste heat recovery in the individual plants, the use of

photovoltaic modules on the roofs and façades of buildings and many other initiatives. Together with other Austrian companies, Blum is also an active member in three environmental networks: the Klimaneutralitätsbündnis 2025, the Energy Efficiency Network and the Wirtschaft Mobil network. Eight electric cars are available to employees for local work-related journeys. New products and services According to data from the Austrian Patent Office, Vorarlberg is the most innovative Austrian province, with 62 registered inventions per 100,000 inhabitants. In this year’s ranking published by the Patent Office, Blum came third. At the interzum, the leading trade fair for the furniture supply industry that was held in Cologne in May, Blum presented numerous new products and services, aimed at safeguarding its position as a reliable system partner

in the long term. Thanks to its innovative stance, the company offers a greater margin for design and differentiation throughout its product groups, for instance with new colours and designs for box systems, onyx black as an additional colour for hinges, a fitting solution for thin doors, and a new generation of lifts in a linear design and particularly small installation size. The Blum offer is completed by a range of services for manufacturers, from planning to ordering and manufacturing, all the way to assembly and fitting. Outlook for the upcoming financial year 2017/2018 “The economic trend in Europe is positive overall. The biggest factor of uncertainty from our point of view is caused by the Brexit negotiations,” is how managing director Gerhard E Blum cautiously assesses the upcoming months. The fittings manufacturer hopes that the principles of European free

Thomas Winfield completes the first Foundation degree in Kitchen Design at Bucks New University Three years ago, Thomas Winfield started the Foundation degree in Kitchen Design at Bucks New University. Today, he has a pass with merit, and a new-found respect for kitchen design. Thomas Winfield was sponsored by Blum UK – who lead the way in apprentices in their parent country of Austria. He comments: “I really enjoyed the course, and being exposed to the many different sides of design thinking. One lecture which really stood out was by Andreas Fabian, where he led an interpretation of design using the shapes and parts of spoons! “I also enjoyed a project management scheme, which included a trip to the Roundhouse factory, following a kitchen from concept to installation. “One of our most challenging projects was to design the kitchen area for a Maggie Centre, this was in Dundee, designed by Frank Gehry,

but it was great to be using our skills in a real-life situation.” The course consists of ‘blended-learning’ online tutorials, with weekly material released. There are also bi-weekly individual Skype discussions with lecturers, and three residential weekends a year. The students are expected to do 15 hours a week, from September to June. The course is open for applications now for the 2017/18 year, at www.tket.co.uk As to the future for Thomas Winfield? “This course is going to be very useful in my role as Test Drive co-ordinator for our Test Drive kitchen at Blum in Milton Keynes, where retailers and consumers can bring their plans, and we create their kitchen using life-sized kitchen units, and then give advice about any changes they may find necessary.” blum.com

Dean Calaz, managing director of the Corporate, Commercial and Private Clients Division of business insurance specialist, Kerry London, looks at how manufacturing businesses can protect themselves in the event of a system-fail or cyber attack.

How would your business recover from a cyber attack?

The majority of modern manufacturing businesses have become increasingly reliant on electronic systems, commonly used in day-to-day administrative tasks, purchasing and supply chain processes and operation and maintenance of machinery. With an increased reliance on these electronic systems comes an increased risk should those systems fail or be subject to attack. As manufacturers continue to invest heavily in devices which can collect and exchange business data – the Internet of Things – security and the results of a breach are posing new and developing challenges. Traditionally, business interruption insurance has covered loss of income related to the damage of physical materials, equipment or facilities. As such, cyber attacks would not usually have been covered as data is not a tangible object.

However as insurance coverage adapts to meet the changing business environment and the growth of the Internet of Things, cyber-related business interruption cover is becoming easier to obtain. Insurers will want to see that businesses have sufficient continuity plans in place that can be implemented if and when their systems fail, reducing the risk

An important issue to resolve is over third party failures, for example where cyber-related business interruption is the responsibility of a cloud-based service provider. This contingent business interruption can be covered, but only by certain insurers. For business interruption coverage to be triggered, companies should be able to

“Insurers will want to see that businesses have sufficient continuity plans in place that can be implemented if and when their systems fail” that relatively minor attacks could become major problems. In order to protect themselves against frequent claims, policies are likely to include time limits after an attack before coverage kicks in. In terms of making a claim and determining what is covered, there are many things for companies to consider.

establish a direct link between the cyber attack, the business interruption and the resulting loss of revenue. Insurers may justifiably contest that some business losses, incurred following a cyber attack, are not actually a direct result of the breach. It should be fairly clear if an attack has directly brought down a system or altered data, causing a

business to put operations on hold. It is also important to discuss with your broker whether your policy will cover you if a security breach becomes public knowledge and customers are driven away as a result, causing you loss of revenue. This is where business continuity planning becomes paramount. If you are unlikely to receive any financial compensation for loss of customers or damage to your brand, planning ahead can identify other measures of protecting yourself in these respects. It is important that your broker helps you design a policy which properly reflects your situation and the risks your business faces. Should an attack happen, open and honest dialogue with your broker and your insurer will help a proper resolution be reached quickly, so that your business can continue trading with minimal disruption to you and your customers. 01923 211 290 kerrylondon.co.uk

Covering a wide range of timber applications, from timber frame through to plywood, CLT and timber cladding, the show will explore the latest developments across the industry as well as new products and innovations from around Europe, for all in the built environment. Exhibitors from across Europe will be at the show including fastenings and fixings provider, Schmid Scrauben Hainfield; manufacturer and a leader in fire containment technology, Intumescent Systems; Czech distributor of plywood and packing, Orlimex; Latvian sawmill, Vudlande Sawmill, which will showcase the newest form of sawmilling technology at the show, and Gaujas Koks Ltd, which has 25 years of CLT manufacturing and will operate two major sawmills with a total output of 300,000m3 of finished products. This top quality product is not one to be missed. This year, collaboration with TRADA, the leading authority dedicated to informing best practice design, specification and use of wood and timber in the built environment, will see the Timber Focus Theatre introduce speakers who will explore how the industry is pushing the boundaries on the use of wood, wood for good health, technical timber and how designers are working directly with fabricators. Students from the Emergent Technologies and Design Programme at the Architectural Association are also developing an innovative timber installation, co-ordinated by TRADA and

sponsored by Hanson Plywood. The design derives from extensive research on plywood composite material systems, focused on the integration of doubly-curved plywood forms and tensile cables. The design is a development from an initial understanding of tensegrity (or floating compression) systems and departs from a pure tensegrity through a three-dimensional structure, where doubly-curved plywood members coexist in equilibrium. There has never been a more

important time to learn about building materials and regulations, which is why the show has introduced a series of free CPDs bringing together leading authorities to deliver advice and guidance on key issues including: up to date advise on fire prevention in all types of buildings, changes to legislation on safety, advice and guidance on construction product safety and responsibilities in the construction process and protecting employees. Nathan Garnett, event director at Media 10, which runs the show,

says: “In addition to showcasing the latest products and innovations across the timber sector, the Timber Expo will deliver the latest information on safety and quality in buildings for all in the built environment, from architects, contractors, local housing authorities, and developers. This is crucial in the current climate and only by coming together, through shared knowledge and learning, will we be able to tackle the issues surrounding building safety head on.” Consisting of Build Show, Civils Expo, Plant & Machinery Live, Energy 2017, Smart Buildings 2017, Surface & Materials Show (featuring Kitchens & Bathrooms Live), HVAC 2017 and Grand Designs Live, UK Construction Week caters for the entire spectrum of the industry from builders, architects, innovators and consultants, each show provides exhibitors with the opportunity to network alongside decision makers and purchasers while showcasing their services and products to thousands of visitors. The Herford-based family business PREWI Schneidwerkzeuge GmbH develops tools for the wood and furniture industry, supplying its worldwide customers with milling cutters, drills and circular saws tipped with carbide or diamond. To manufacture these, PREWI uses around 30 sharpening machines from Vollmer.

Wood and furniture construction relies on PREWI precision The Swabian specialist in grinding and eroding machines delivered the first eroding machine to the German manufacturer at the end of the 1980s. However, it was only recently that PREWI opted for sharpening technology from Vollmer, a QXD 250 disc erosion machine. “For many years, we have been placing our trust in Vollmer’s sharpening expertise when it comes to eroding diamond-tipped rotary tools and circular saws,” says Helmut Prekwinkel, founder and CEO of PREWI Schneidwerkzeuge GmbH. “With the new QXD 250 disc erosion machine, we want to expand our range of diamondtipped milling cutters and drills so that we can respond much more precisely, quickly and flexibly to customer requirements.” Tool manufacturer for over 50 years Helmut Prekwinkel founded

his company in 1962 and PREWI, with its 45 employees, has now become one of the leading suppliers of chipping tools for manufacturers of furniture, doors and laminate/parquet flooring. Whether special tools or high volumes of cutting tools, this medium-sized company offers the whole range for the precise and flexible cutting of wood and composites. Operating from its 18,000m2 facility, PREWI produces cutting tools, machining units, exhaust ventilation systems, pressure pads and landing skids, as well as measuring devices for all areas of the wood processing industry. The toolmaker is a pioneer in the use of PCD for rotary tools: In 1984, the first PCD folding chipper was produced, which door manufacturers use to make door frames, among other things. PREWI also leads the way when it comes

to using MCD (monocrystalline diamond) and for four years, was the sole provider of MCD tools in the market. Helmut Prekwinkel was recently honoured with the Goldener Meisterbrief (gold master craftsman’s diploma) for the commitment he has shown over many years as an innovator in tool technology. “We were one of the first manufacturers to bring PCD-tipped tools to the market in order to efficiently machine highly abrasive materials,” says Helmut Prekwinkel. “To precisely sharpen our diamond tools to a high standard of quality, we have put our trust in Vollmer’s eroding machines for many decades now.” Vollmer machines guarantee precision Around 30 sharpening machines from Vollmer now help PREWI to ensure that their diamond milling cutters, drills, reamers, circular saws and combi tools are of a high quality and are extremely durable. Vollmer technology is also essential for PREWI to develop future diamond-tipped tools and circular saws for the wood industry. PREWI tools are especially in demand for chipping, sawing and machining composites that are used in furniture manufacturing or to manufacture laminate or parquet flooring. Half a dozen Vollmer wire erosion machines can be found in

PREWI’s production facilities. With contactless eroding, an electrical voltage is built up between the workpiece and the tool and electrical discharge machining is used to remove material to obtain the desired shape. With the wire electrode, PREWI has managed to sharpen even complex tool geometries with extremely small inner radii, as is typical for multi-stage tools. PREWI is able to use the recently delivered QXD 250 to prepare PCD-tipped rotary tools around the clock. Thanks to the Vpulse EDM generator technology, the machine achieves an excellent surface finish quality at the maximum stock removal rate during tool machining. The QXD 250 even provides greater flexibility when manufacturing special tools in order to deal with the various requirements that customers have. “With PREWI, we have combined a long-standing partnership with a lively exchange in order to develop new technologies and fields of application for our eroding machines,” says Dr-Ing Stefan Brand, CEO of the Vollmer Group. “Our technologies therefore also form the basis of the PREWI diamond tools that are used by companies for machining highly abrasive composites in order to manufacture robust and durable furniture and floors.” 0115 9491040 vollmer-group.com

AXYZ router takes centre stage at the RSC Following installation of an AXYZ 6010 CNC router in February of this year, the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon is said to have achieved considerable savings in production time and on outsourcing costs. The RSC is the foremost British theatre company, employing a staff of over 1000 and responsible for around 20 productions a year, all of which require a variety of sophisticated scenic constructions that hitherto were crafted by hand. Head of Scenic Resources at the RSC, Rebecca Cubitt, comments: “Having been impressed by the performance and reliability of the AXYZ 6010 CNC router installed at other scenic workshops, coupled with the quality of the on-site operator training provided by AXYZ International’s technical engineers, it was decided to purchase the same machine for the RSC carpentry department. This has enabled us to bring in-house all of our routing and cutting requirements and removed

the previous need to use outside suppliers for the more intricate stage set and scenic designs required for RSC’s many and varied productions.” The AXYZ router is employed primarily to process plywood and polycarbonate sheets used to create the floors of the stage sets and for making components that are built into other scenic elements. Installation of the router has, according to Rebecca, also helped resolve issues on manual handling and employee safety. She adds: “In the past, it was necessary to hand-cut or use a wall-mounted panel saw to cut shaped floor panels and this proved very time consuming as well as presenting handling problems for staff when lifting heavy sheets of polycarbonate onto the saw.” Rebecca continues: “Since installation, the router has been working non-stop, enabling a much faster turnaround on work to better accommodate critical deadlines on the various RSC productions. Typical applications for the AXYZ

6010 machine have included a new stage set for RSC’s outdoor theatre the Dell and for cutting and profiling polycarbonate sheets used in a stage set for a recent production of The Tempest. The router was also employed to create the floor, senate steps and colonnades used in the current Rome season, as well as providing stage sets for the new play, Vice Versa, presented in the RSC’s Swan Theatre.” The AXYZ 6010 router installed at the RSC scenic workshop has a processing area of 2159mm wide x 3048mm. It also incorporates a seven-station AXYZ ATC (Automatic Tool Change) facility to accommodate multiple tooling requirements. Rebecca continues: “As this was the first CNC machine installed in the carpentry department, it was a matter of choosing a router which was easy to operate and trustworthy and which would enable employees to learn how to use quickly and integrate into their working practices.” As with all AXYZ routers, however,

the AXYZ 6010 machine can be supplied with a host of optional production tool enhancements. These include the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility that ensures the material being processed is always held securely during the routing/ cutting process and the A2MC machine controller with integrated AXYZ Vision System (AVS) for optimum accuracy and quality of cut. These are supplemented with the latest helical rack and pinion drive system. This features a multiple gear teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to faster throughput times, reduced material wastage, quieter operation and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. In conclusion, Rebecca comments: “In addition to the performance and reliability of the AXYZ 6010 router, I was pleased with the on-site operator training provided by AXYZ International and to the support demonstrated throughout the entire installation process.” 01952 291600 axyz.co.uk

Well-travelled staircases gain the Mighton finish A striking cladding design was created for a pair of staircases at York University with installation being completed within the students’ three-week spring break, despite having to be constructed on site before being dismantled and removed for painting then brought back for reassembly. The unusual design incorporated 10mm shadow gaps, which required finishing in-situ to ensure the accuracy of the gaps before

the MDF panels could be factory painted, as Robert Bailey-Hague, MD of subcontractor Bailey-Hague Joinery explains: “Everything had to be completed within the strict schedule but this was the only way it could be done. The shadow gaps were an important part of the overall look of the staircases and it would have been impossible to achieve that by fitting painted panels on site. At the same time, on-site painting would have been out of the question, not least because of

ventilation in the enclosed space.” Specialist paint supplier Mighton Products worked closely with Bailey-Hague Joinery is not only in choosing the right materials but also in producing a colour match for the non-standard grey that was specified. The company had been using Mighton’s exterior products so had no hesitation in putting its interior range to work. A team of five joiners and one spray-painter worked on the project, with the panels making the

30 mile-plus round trip to BayleyHague’s spray shop in Sherburnin-Elmet. The moisture-resistant MDF was treated with Mighton Ultra high-build MDF Internal Primer and Internal Opaque Topcoat. Robert Bailey-Hague concludes: “It took a bit of careful management and planning to do it to the right specification and within the time limits but the finished product looks good and the client is very happy with it.” mightonproducts.com

Amongst a raft of materials, components, fittings and machinery and equipment, NEY has added decorative panels with UVcoated high gloss and super matt surface finishes to its impressive range

New trend decorative panels from NEY Responding to market demand, these new trend panels have been well accepted by consumers, with the new colour ranges creating another taste and dimension, in kitchens, bathrooms, sliding doors and dining rooms. NEY will stock 30 different colours and designs, under its UK stock collection range banner with more than 100 solid colours, woodgrains,

metallic, hologram and fantasia dĂŠcors available to order, under the global collection range. The PVC and PET high gloss and super matt panels have improved benefits for customers such as anti-scratch resistance, light resistance and continuous colour stability, thanks to a new UV coating technology. New trend PVC and PET high gloss boards are laminated to 300

microns which gives consistency of surface application and excellent high gloss levels. The panel dimensions are 1220 x 2800mm which enables perfect optimisation, as tall cabinets up to 2800mm high can be made in a single piece, available with a thickness of 18mm. The panels come with a protective film on the surface and a standard foil backing. The panels can also be supplied with the same colour surface front and back. Unlike acrylic surfaces, when, after removing the protective film, up to 24 hours is required for the surface to cure before it can be used or cleaned, the new panels can be used as soon as the protective film has been removed. Combilift set for expansion

Combilift, the manufacturer of four-way forklifts and other innovative handling solutions, is set to double its output in the next few years as its new factory nears completion. €40m has been invested in the new 46,000m² factory on a 40 hectare site, which will be the largest single manufacturing plant under one roof in Ireland. Combilift invented the world’s first internal combustion engine-powered, all-wheel drive multidirectional forklift in 1998 and has experienced exceptional growth ever since. The new global headquarters and production facility will include a dedicated research and development building and adjoining administration offices and is based in the company’s home of Monaghan, Ireland, close to where Combilift was first established. Production of some model ranges

such as the Straddle Carrier has already moved to the new site, which will be fully operational in the spring of 2018. The expansion will also create around 200 new jobs, mainly for skilled technicians and design engineers. Combilift’s products are a popular choice in the furniture and joinery sector due to their ability to handle loads safely in confined spaces and for their space-saving storage and versatile indoor/outdoor operation. “Whether you handle long awkward loads, pallets, containers, oversized products or a combination of these, there is a Combilift to suit your requirements. We are continually adding to our range, so keep an eye on our website or visit us at trade fairs to keep up to date on developments,” says Martin McVicar, MD, Combilift. combilift.com

Some things in life are just meant to be together and this philosophy is especially true with Schelling UK’s new trading partners – Votecs shredders and Barbaric lifting and handling systems. Both companies have been carefully chosen as complimentary partners to Schelling UK’s cutting range.

Starbank invests further with Schelling UK Philip Darbyshire, managing director of Starbank Panel Products picks up the story: “For Starbank it would have been very easy to rest on our laurels and once again congratulate ourselves on a good year of sales, however this is not how Starbank works. Our goal always is to move forward with product development, and along with that it requires careful investment to improve our production machinery so any complimentarily is always a bonus” As Markus Freuis, managing director of Schelling UK comments: “The more you have, the more options you can give your customers, and the more individual tastes you can cater for”. It was at this point that Starbank realised the additional value and benefits of sourcing additional products from one trusted supplier. As the current owner of two Schelling FH6 cutto-size beam saws, a VS16 Board Storage System and a customised FTH capable of handling wood based panels, compact laminates and plastics, Starbank was very familiar with excellent service levels delivered by Schelling UK. This gave them the confidence and trust to invest further with Schelling UK. Barbaric GmbH – founded in 1995 – is proud to partner with Schelling UK Ltd to deliver intelligent lifting and storage systems across the United Kingdom. According to Markus: “It is our aim to offer individual lifting solutions to our

Starbank’s Barbaric SSY light crane system with a B3 DL door lifter allows quick and nimble movement of loads within a smaller area

existing customers all of whom already have trust and confidence in Schelling UK and to also attract new customers with these products.” According to Lis Burrow Chartered MCIPD, Grad IOSH, health and safety manager at Starbank: “Backs and shoulders are extremely vulnerable to manual handling injuries within our sector however the Barbaric lifters will drastically reduce the potential problems with repetitive strain injuries because they take care of all the heavy lifting, and in doing so they remove the strain on the operators, which reduces risk

of injury, while reducing worker fatigue.” Previously the Shield branded fire doors which Starbank specialise on in a subcontract basis for leading manufacturers across the UK – which can weigh 100kg at times – were manually handled during the Postforming, CNC and Glazing process stages. Now two sets of Barbaric SSK Pillar jib cranes have been positioned at either end of both their five axis CNC and the postforming line to eliminate these risks and to also ensure that high value added products are moved efficiently, safely and without quality being compromised. Another benefit of

the Barbaric B3 DL Door and Panel lifting mechanism is in its ability to rotate the products 180° during processing which reduces greatly the risk of scratches, improves production time and reduces manual handling during operation. “In full co-operation and partnership with Starbank, Schelling has designed a customer specific solution which has delivered a more functional workplace,” commented Markus. Also purchased by Starbank was a Barbaric SSY light crane system with a B3 DL door and panel lifter which allows quick and nimble movement of loads within a given production cell.

“In co-operation with Starbank, Schelling has designed a customer specific solution which has delivered a more functional workplace” This highly adaptable 7.5 x 5m system is located in the finishing and packing area and because the bridge crane is equipped with lateral guide rollers there is complete movement across and along the whole 37.5m2 area . The 180° turning facility of the lifter allows heavy sensitive components (Doors with glazing for example) to be moved with ease, by just one man. Paul Atkinson, Starbank production director, comments: “During the research phase, we evaluated other board lifting manufacturers and found that other compressed air lifter manufacturers were slightly cheaper, however, when we investigated the overall life cycle costs of the Barbaric system which uses a single phase 240v 13amp supply without the need for constant compressed air, the Barbaric system proved to be more cost effective as power is only consumed whilst is use.” An integral result from the cutting process is waste wood, so Votecs GmbH was an ideal trade partner for Schelling UK. Nestled between two Schelling fh6 cut-to-size saws is Starbank’s latest purchase, a horizontal Votecs VHZ T6 shredder. Due to the compact size of the VHZ horizontal shredder it fits neatly beside wood processing machinery with the operators feeding material, up to 5m long, directly onto a vibrating conveyor which directly feeds the shredder which is housed in its own walk-in sound-proof room with access door. Its compact size means it can be used directly alongside the saws so that it effectively automates the recycling element of the manufacturing process. The saw operators are “over the moon” as previously they would have had to break up the long trim off cuts into smaller lengths to fit into recycling bins. These bins were later transported by forklift truck to a central shredder all of which took additional production time and energy. Philip and Paul at Starbank have long realised the potential benefits which smarter machinery can provide, such as improved material handling which is one of the reasons why they purchased the Schelling VS16 board storage

system. This principle also lead them to purchase the horizontal Votecs shredder because it saves the operators time, energy and manually handling waste material unnecessarily. The efficient handling and processing of waste materials (a precious resource at Starbank) is then further recycled via a large Biomass system which heats the factory to a constant temperature and ultimately reduces landfill and their carbon footprint minimising environmental impact. With a 45kW motor and a 354mm diameter V-profiled rotor running at 650rpm it shreds its way through a minimum of 2.3 tonnes per hour of waste, producing chipboard and MDF shavings of 15/20mm. And because the V rotors are manufactured from one piece they

Starbank’s horizontal Votecs VHZ T6 shredder

are particularly torsion resistant, not to mention the fact that the knife holders are welded around the circumference of the profiled rotors. All this adds up to a very fast and efficient shredding machine. According to Paul Atkinson: “Due to the close proximity of the two Schelling saws we knew it was going to be a noisy operation for the saw operators, so to minimise this the Votecs shredder was built on rubber anti-vibration feet and an acoustic booth was then specified and built to surround the

shredder”. Paul adds: “Let’s face it, it’s always challenging to see where new opportunities for production improvement may lie, but it is part of our continual investment in the latest technology that enables this.” To see a working Votecs shredder and a Barbaric lifter, visit the Schelling UK showroom in Wetherby or to receive more information, contact Andrew Hepworth or Markus Freuis. 01937 586340 schelling.co.uk

Masterwood Spa is one of the leading suppliers dedicated to CNC solutions, supplying machines to countries all around the World, and it is still owned and run by the three Italian families of Muti, Zangheri, and Boschetti.

The Masterwood CNC family – solutions for all A full range of machines to cover various materials include the supply of Muti oscillating chisel mortises, drilling machines, and routers, which are all built in the Rimini and San Marino factories in Italy using proven designs and leading suppliers for components like HSD, Beckhoff, Yaskawa, THK, Schmalz, and Becker. Over the last 10 years the company has redesigned much of the range to meet customers needs following the global recession, as a result a more efficient company can now supply more individual solutions but keep production times to a minimum, with various kit options like horizontal routers and C-axis controls easy to retro fit at sensible prices. Pod and rail CNCs Starting with an entry level Project 250, moving through the larger 300 and 400 Project series to the top end Project 500 range these CNC Project Door

machines can be supplied in all formats for solid timbers, panels, composites, and other materials. This includes long or short beds, cantilever or gantry designs, manual or automatic beds, in three, four or five axis formats. Flatbed CNCs To compliment the pod and rail range Masterwood has increased the range of Matrix beds for nesting and special works. These range from the entry 2500mm x 1250mm bed through a large range of sheet sizes up to beds of over 7500mm in length. All the flatbeds are to a heavy bed design by Masterwood with the gantries driven on both sides of the machine bed for added accuracy and long lasting reliability. The flat-bed range can have infeed and outfeed systems to automate the production, allowing full sheets to be loaded, fully machined, finished panels pushed out, and the bed cleaned before the next sheet is loaded. On top of this

a manual or fully automatic arm can be added for sticking labels on to the sheets prior or after machining. Special CNCs To add to the main CNC range Masterwood then produces dedicated machines like the 4WIN (windows), Project Door (full size doors), DoorLine (door locks and hinges), Teknomat and MultiMill (window and frame components). These machines can be manually fed, or in most case supplied with a mixture of automatic loading and unloading equipment, including Robots, the employees of the future?

Production lines In recent years Masterwood has been asked to provide more and more automated production lines to leading manufacturers around the World. This has covered such products as windows, doors, frames, and sun glasses. The special systems have included such items as inserting weather seals into components, selecting and fixing locks into housings, special beds for machining gun parts, and special drill heads for multi drilling acoustic panels. Dedicated software All the developments and improvements to the CNC machines is one thing, but the biggest changes have been with software. As PC’s have become more powerful, the software has too, allowing customers to produce programmes that would consist of thousands of lines of code in minutes, allowing carvings and intricate work to be produced on the very basic three axis machines, often dismissing the need to go to more expensive five axis machines and software. Masterwood has always produced software with their own companies, but to take this to higher levels they now work under contract with some of the leading software houses, this ensures that machines and software are fully compatible at all times. All the machines are supplied with the tried and tested MasterWorks Cad/Cam, an easy to use, but powerful package for most CNC work. To add to this there are dedicated packages to cover staircases, windows, door sets (timber frame & solid core), traditional box windows, cabinets, furniture, louvres, and the latest 3D software for three, four and five axis work. Any of the packages can be added to a

customer’s machine at any time, giving them the ability to change direction or production methods if required. All the Masterwood software packages come with full on-site installation and training to tailor to the customer’s manufacturing needs. Support Selling and supplying machines is one thing, supporting and helping customers is the next stage, in our eyes it is the most important. For first time buyers CNC is likely to be the biggest investment their company makes, so it is important

that they see the results on their production as soon as possible and feel comfortable with the direction they have taken. Masterwood GB uses up to 12 technicians in the UK and Ireland to cover the installation and training for new CNC machines and software, support and back up, servicing, repairs, and breakdowns, plus upgrading old machines to be more compatible with the new machines when installed. The company also has the expertise of its Italian company’s staff to help with the more specialised jobs when required.

Masterwood has over 300 companies in the UK and Ireland using its machines, many of these are family run, and within a short period of time, they totally rely on their CNC, so if there are problems, for whatever reason, it is important that customers are back upand-running in the shortest time possible. Masterwood’s growing team has vast knowledge and experience of its machines, not just today’s models, but those produced in the last 30 years, many still operating every day including CNC machines and the Muti oscillating chisel mortisers. As Masterwood GB’s Dave Kennard says: “For

Masterwood GB, our customers are important, they become our showrooms, in many cases new sales have resulted from visits to see existing customers machines in operation, and the good reports that are passed on, so it is in our interest to provide the best service for our growing family of customers, and we never lose sight that there is always room for improvements.” AMS AutumFest demonstrations Masterwood GB will be running live demonstrations on a five axis CNC at the AMS’ AutumnFest open house from 26-28th September. Felder strikes the right chord for guitar maker Neil Haynes, a cabinet maker and musician, started Haynes Guitars three years ago, with a love for woodworking and a passion for music combining the two and manufacturing his own guitar bodies and necks for other guitar makers from the UK and Europe seemed the logical progression. At W14 Neil decided to take a massive leap and take his business to the next level and purchase a CNC from the Felder Group, a profit H08 from the Format-4 range. “I have been making guitars by hand for 25 years, I had no knowledge of CNC and I thought that Felder would be the best for me. As a customer new to CNC, I knew I would need a lot of help and it has always been there, I did the training and learnt the basics, from there anything else I needed I picked up via the telephone support – and thanks to the help from the staff at Felder Group UK I was able to pick up it up easily.” Since then Neil has purchased

two more machines from Felder’s Hammer range the A3-41 planer thicknesser equipped with the spiral-POWER silent cutterblock and the K3 basic panel saw. When talking about his machines Neil says: “With the CNC, accuracy is key, it works great with the Alphacam software and I can make up to five bodies at a time, it’s 100% accurate time after time” He goes on to say: “I couldn’t go back to a normal cutterblock on my planer thicknesser now that I have used the silent-POWER one – it is so quiet, so accurate and the blades are so easy to change. The sliding table saw is superb. It’s still very industrial and the sliding table makes the small machine very powerful.” Neil finished by saying: “I have used machines at a much higher price that are not as user-friendly and simply not as good.” See Neil’s work at www. haynesguitars.co.uk and www. guitarandbassbuild.co.uk. 01908 635 000 felder-group.co.uk

Focusing as usual on specialist areas of production, JJ Smith is able to offer a range of CNC machines dedicated to door and door lining production.

CNC door machining solutions from JJ Smith

Centauro Alfa for door parts

Each model range of JJ Smith’s door and door lining production technology options is aimed at different levels of production and budget to meet customers’ individual requirements. With this approach, JJ Smith feels it is well placed to meet current market demands for both stand-alone and through-feed machines. From Centauro there is the popular, attractively-priced ALFA that is suitable for machining either individual door/frame components or a complete door. It is equipped with a single router head that is CNC controlled and can work in either the vertical or horizontal. The machine is extremely quick to set up and easy to program thanks to the colour graphic touch-screen controller with pre-installed electronic macros for different design hinges, locks, keep plates etc. Options include a pneumatic quick change tool system, additional smaller router head for squaring off corners (to allow fitting of hardware with square corners) and for drill spotting of screw holes. This machine is ideally suited for smaller to medium-size companies that need to increase productivity, accuracy and reduce labour by eliminating the need to have two or three separate manual machines.

It is also widely being used by some larger manufacturers that are using big flat bed CNC routers but want a secondary machine to run alongside just for machining the linings. For customers that require a higher level of output, coupled with additional machining capability, then a machine from the Comec MD JAMB series should provide the answer. They are specifically designed for the machining of door lock jambs, hinge jambs and frame jambs. They can be equipped with single

or multiple CNC machining heads including sawblade unit/s that can be used for cutting the mitre on the frame jambs and drilling for dowel holes, or cutting to length of all material. For a standard door frame it is also possible to trench the head for fitting of the two legs. All machines can be offered with different levels of automation including loading, unloading, through-feed operation, the ability to load and machine two jambs together and barcode reading. Essepigi offers various through feed solutions for machining both sides

The new imos version breaks from the existing naming structure. Following on from the release of imos 12 in October 2015 customers would expect the latest version – announced at Ligna in May – to be called imos 13.0. However, visitors were greeted with imos iX. So why the change?

imos iX – a virtual change?

“With imos iX, we are breaking the tradition and making clear that our solutions continue to develop,” says imos AG managing director for sales and marketing, Winfried Dell. “We see it as our task to find, test and make technological innovations available to the industry. The ‘i’ stands for innovation and integration, the ‘X’ is derived from

the English word ‘exchange’ and stands for the exchange of the data on different applications throughout the entire sales and manufacturing process,” explained Winfried. “imos iX is today far more than a CAD/CAM system. imos iX is a complete solution for the sale and manufacturing of furniture and equipment in the area of networked production and industry 4.0.”

The quickest and easiest way to create customisable space plans for customers

Originally from the CAD/CAM sector, imos AG is developing additional sales solutions for the woodworking industry and trades. The 3D product data models generated in the design process, including the parameters, are directly transferred into sales catalogues with all their characteristics making this data available to desktop or online

planning solutions. Depending on the configuration, the modules are suitable for both B2B and B2C business models. With imos iX, imos AG is taking a further step and is offering solutions along the customer journey. End users and designers can work together on ideas that can be exchanged online and thus gradually lead to solutions. Adam Bumpsteed, director of in3D says: “We’ve been the authorised partner for imos here in the UK for nearly ten years, and we’ve seen a lot of advances in the software over that time. We’re really excited about iX however, imos has really pushed the boat out with this latest release. “All of the great advances seen in imos 12 for example, the new user interfaces and improved rendering features have been developed. What we are really excited about however is some of the more understated features that we know our existing users as well as our new customers will love.” Adam explains that these features

include an overhaul to the way imos produces automated drawings of room layouts, cabinetry and even individual parts. Also the much requested ‘clash detection’ feature which allows designers to for example, identify hinges and shelves in close proximity. “A classic problem finally thwarted” Adam says. Advanced 3D product configuration for ‘Net’ sales tools The focus for the new imos online applications such as ‘Net Designer’ and ‘Net Configurator’ lie in the 3D configuration and planning of furniture. These applications have now been expanded technologically, so that any kind of furnishing elements can now be processed. It is now also possible to configure and plan seating and upholstered furniture or bought in items such as lighting. imos have also added the possibility to simulate kinematic movements, such as the seat mechanics of a chair or the opening and closing of a sliding door.

Use imos 360 Augmented Reality to view bespoke furniture in its intended environment before it is produced

imos iX features clash detection to highlight potential design flaws

www.furnitureproduction.net

Room environments can easily be rendered within imos iX Plan 2.0

Photorealistic images from the Net tools. The above mentioned furniture can now be combined with room planning. Decoration elements can be added and, if necessary, global changes can be made to the entire planning process by the end user. Afterwards, wall elevations can be generated automatically or a highquality, almost photorealistic image can be produced. The latter is done with the help of the new online render service, which generates high-quality images quickly and separately from the planning process. Also because this service is in the cloud using imos servers the end user does not require a powerful CAD workstation to visualise their perfect environment. iX is VR-ready Virtual reality for imos AG means that the existing CAD technology breaks into the latest visualisation tools for experiencing the planning results created with imos software. imos AG is demonstrating how VR technology can be used to promote sales and be involved in the sales process in Hannover for the first time in their so-called iX lab. Visitors are invited to take part in the virtual experience and to marvel at the new possibilities and quality. Space planning software for your sales force Space planning for interior designers and sales professionals using the imos CAD engine has seen its second iteration. With iX PLAN 2.0, imos AG are offering a desktop planning solution for the professional user in addition to the above mentioned online applications for

end users. Perfect for remote design offices, dealerships or showrooms. iX PLAN allows interior designers to use production-ready data to design and configure orders with the end user and send the data to production. “With iX PLAN we’ve specifically simplified the process, the output has been improved and the speed optimised in order to keep up with the established kitchen planning packages.” Winfried Dell explains. PLAN Link is the associated web service that updates the users design catalogues and sends the customer orders to the manufacturing plant from any remote location. “All of the new sales modules such as the improved Augmented Reality App and Virtual Reality experience are great tools to offer any modern sales force looking to sell bespoke or custom furniture.” Adam Bumpsteed continues: “The best thing though, imos is always true to their CAD|CAM roots ensuring that flexible parametric modelling combined with the power of AutoCAD 2018 offers their users the ability to quickly and accurately generate production ready data in minutes for even the most complex of designs.” The newly developed CAM technology is significantly more powerful After several years of development, the new CAM technology is used in imos iX. This is now fully integrated in iX CAD and is configured and managed via the user interface introduced with imos 12.0. With the new CAM module it is possible to display production processes

required to create your designs and to adapt the CNC data generated into its respective production flow. Since the design data is largely processed in a neutral manufacturing manner, the data exchange with external production providers and other suppliers is easier than ever. The CNC program functions themselves have also been developed. The expansion of functions and parameters, such as lead in and lead out distances, new machining strategies, milling cycles and more have significantly increased the flexibility, functionality and performance. All of these factors come together to increase the processing your designs into production data. Optimisation through integration The demand for more integrated solutions is increasing, and with it the requirement for standardised interfaces and shorter lead times. With the new ‘Integration Centre’ imos AG have created a central tool for the connection of the imos suite of products to external programs such as ERP, MES and sales systems. The new ‘iBots’ play an important role. Allowing blocks of predefined process to be strung together to automate how data is passed from one department to another, thus streamlining the organisations entire workflow. If you would like to learn more about how imos iX can help revolutionise your sales, design and production workflow contact Adam Bumpsteed at in3D 01249 783332 info@in3d.co.uk in3d.co.uk

Converting prospects into sales with Cabinet Vision’s powerful photo-rendering has helped a bespoke joinery specialist to expand into new premises, almost tripling the size of its old workshop.

Cabinet Vision technology aids Fri Projects’ expansion Fri Projects has recently moved from 6800ft2 premises into an 18,000ft2 factory on the edge of Birmingham. Previously we’d have had to draw it in 2D and add the toolpaths separately. With innovative new features in Release 2017 and virtual reality that is accessible for everyone, CAD+T is an ideal solution for the furniture industry. Faster performance, easy handling and an improved user interface help the users to streamline planning processes, while the new virtual reality plug-in makes customer presentations an unforgettable experience.

CAD+T Software – individual meets innovative Built on AutoCAD®, the CAD+T add-on gives you the possibility of drawing the parts directly in 3D even though you can still work on 2D. Individualisation is the key word here – from standard-range cabinets to highly customised furniture pieces and shop fit-outs, the CAD+T software covers all areas of interior design. In the drawing, information about materials, finishes, edges, profiles, hardware, etc. can be saved. So the drawing consists of more than only lines and text – it actually understands what you are drawing. Based on the drawing, you can proceed in the design process and create sophisticated renderings and visualisations to enhance your presentations for your customers. In the construction drawings, you get plan views, elevations and sections automatically and define joints, hardware and construction details – even for bespoke furniture and non-standard designs. Again, customisation is the key to success: Any part of your design can be changed easily at any point of the process, even if the element is highly complex. The program then automatically adapts all data connected to the drawing, such as part lists and CNC data. This is fostered even more in CAD+T Release 2017: faster performance and new, useful tools such as automatic price calculation during drawing, new hardware setup and an improved user interface allow you to streamline your planning and production processes even more. To enhance your planning and presentation, CAD+T implemented a virtual reality module which allows your customers to see the design in 3D through special glasses. This gives your customer the impression that he was standing right inside his future home as you have designed it. But what are your benefits? Besides a significant reduction of errors and mistakes due to the use of only one programme, your main benefit is the overall increase of productivity. Save up to 30% of labour costs and up to 10% of material costs and increase productivity by up to 60%. More than 3000 customers all over the world bear witness to the productivity gained with the CAD+T solutions. cadt-solutions.com

Wood waster heater delivers everything promised

Ellerton, the new handleless Shaker from PWS’ Alchemy collection

The owner of a Leicestershire joinery company is delighted with his purchase of a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology (WWT), as it delivers everything promised regarding its provision of free heating. Steve Bower Joinery & Manufacturing specialises in producing traditional doors, windows, bi-fold doors and stairs. Its 7000ft2 joinery workshop in Loughborough was freezing in winter as the workshop’s existing diesel heater was unpleasant, inefficient and expensive to use. Someone recommended to MD, Steve Bower that the business should think about investing in a wood waste heater to warm the workshop for its five employees. A quick search on the internet led to WWT, and a realisation that a wood waste heater could be the ideal solution. Following more information and a site survey, WWT’s specialist engineers installed a WT15 wood waste heater into the joinery workshop in February this year. Steve Bower says: “Once the heater was installed the difference was obvious, as the workshop went from freezing cold to beautifully warm. We’re delighted with our purchase, it does everything we were told it would and more than fulfils our business requirements. It’s been a great investment.” Kurt Cockroft, MD at WWT says: “Businesses with a significant amount of wood waste can get payback on their investment in a wood waste heater in as little as 12 months because of the savings that

Just think about this for a moment: what is the first image that comes into your head when you think of hand sanding? The most common answer to this question is probably a block of wood with sandpaper wrapped around it. However, hand sanding has evolved to the point where there are now numerous tools available on the market due to the variety of processes and materials that are being used.

Handling the evolution of sanding In the furniture industry, the hand sanding process is key to ensuring that all the lines and curves are smooth on the product before it leaves the workshop to either be painted or sold. Therefore, the user requires a wide-ranging selection of tools to meet the varying requirements that come with each project. One company that is continuously investing in its tools to ensure that it stays at the cutting edge of tool development is Mirka. Its aim is to ensure that users have the correct tools at their disposal, so they can manipulate them to achieve a smooth and consistent finish. This is evident by the fact that Mirka’s R&D department has developed a range that includes traditional sanding blocks as well as ergonomically designed tools that fit into the palm of the user’s hand. Although they are used for basic hand sanding, Mirka has two foam blocks which both use 70 x 125mm grip strips, either paper-backed or net. Even with no dust extraction, best results can still be achieved by

using Mirka Abranet strips. The grip attachment means that as much pressure as required can be used without the abrasive strips slipping and moving around on the block. There is a double-sided block which has a soft and hard side. The soft side can be used for curved surfaces and the hard side for flat surfaces, so two blocks in one. The single-sided foam block has ergonomic finger grips along the side. Moving away from basic block sanding, Mirka has developed hand sanding tools that can be used with an extractor, such as the 70 x 125mm grip hand block. This tool has been specifically designed for sanding by hand and can be used for all types of sanding, from coarse to fine, while having the ability to work in small spaces due to its size. In addition, when it is used in combination with Mirka’s net sanding products and connected to a suitable extractor, it provides a dust-free environment that protects workers from the health risks associated with dust particles and ensures that no dust is left on the workpiece.

Now with Mirka’s latest product, hand sanding has been taken to the next level. The Roundy has a low profile that provides good control over the sanding process and an ergonomic design built around the shape of the fingers, which allows the user to work with the hand block for long periods of time without feeling the strain on the hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder. In addition, there are several features that make it stand out from the crowd. The first is the fact it can be used with both Mirka Abranet abrasives and 15-hole 150mm discs, so users only need to invest in one type

of abrasive for their hand sander and random orbital sander. The second is that the abrasives wrap around its sides allowing for smooth sanding on both sides of internal 90° edges. The final one is its dust extraction has become more efficient, even on a smaller surface area, as the Roundy has 34 extraction holes. With the industry continuously changing, rest assured Mirka’s R&D department will continue to create innovative products to help customers be more efficient, saving time, and ultimately making them more profitable. mirka.com

Advancements in technology have driven the level of expectation of manufacturing quality higher and higher. The furniture industry is no exception and one technology in particular leading the way for finish excellence is the now well-known edgebanding technology which is zero-joints.

The benefits of Homag’s invisible joint edgebanding technology are clear to see The Homag KAL 370 profiLine laserTec edgebander – a variety of configuration options for flexible manufacturing

Representing high quality, premium value and a modern finish, ‘invisible joint’ is the revolutionary edgebanding solution that’s taken the market by storm. With over 55 years’ experience in pioneering edgebanding technology, Homag is well placed to explain the core values of zero-joints and the technology behind it. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at Homag UK explains: “The immense knowledge and experience that the Homag Group has accumulated over the decades, enables us to provide the right edgebanding solution for all levels of manufacturing.” airTec Technology – invisible joints Homag were the first to introduce airTec technology to the industry. Since its initial début in 2012, this

invisible innovation is now available throughout Homag’s full range of edgebanders, bringing high end, top quality edges within reach of even the smallest of manufacturers. The company’s airTec technology is a clean, cost-effective bonding method which results in perfectly crafted products where joints are no longer visible. The airTec system uses a combination of technically engineered hot air and special edge material to produce the ultimate invisible joint. The special edge material consists of a hard décor layer backed with a meltable functional layer. This layer is activated by the hot air and then securely pressed onto the panel edge without the need for glue. Homag has made this technology available across its full range of edge banders meaning that businesses of any manufacturing size can benefit from

zero-joint technology. For example, Ambition 1220 and 1230 airTec models are the perfect entry level edgebanders that offer an ideal solution for the bespoke craftsman. These affordable models provide a high degree of automation and come equipped with a pre-milling unit for optimum edge joint quality, Homag’s in-house-manufactured airTec system, end snipping saws front and rear, a trimming unit with DFC tool technology for maximum dust extraction, a contour trimming unit for optimum corner rounding as well as scraping and buffering units for the perfect finish. The machine is also supplied with a conventional glue pot making it a great all-round model. For small- to medium-sized businesses, the Ambition 1440 airTec offers a higher degree of flexibility and can be optimised

according to customers’ requirements. The basic model has a joint trimming unit, an exact gluing unit, an end trimming unit, a trimming unit and a two-motor corner rounding unit. It also offers lower energy costs with ecoPlus and is controlled with powerTouch using the 21.5in widescreen multitouch monitor. Alternatively, for higher outputs the Ambition 1650 offers both airTec and Quickmelt gluing (EVA and PUR). In standard trim, the 1650 offers a variable feed speed from 8-18m/min, with an option to increase feed rates up to 20m/min. As well as a heavy duty pre-milling unit for panels up to 60mm in thickness, the Ambition 1650 airTec boasts a two-motor end-snipping unit, top and bottom trimming units, a servo controlled corner rounding unit, with automatically selectable profile and surface scraping units

For the larger manufacturers, Homag offers its top of the range Ambition 2000 series of edgebanders. Designed especially for the demands of industrial level manufacturing, this collection of high speed workhorses can achieve feed speeds between 16-32m/min. Available with either airTec’s zero-joint technology for invisible joints or PUR adhesive for high performance applications, the Ambition 2000 series offers enormous flexibility. With its energy-saving and environmentallyfriendly benefits, the range offers an impressive array of features to enhance the efficiency of the

production facility. laserTec – high volume invisible edging at high speed Laser technology enables manufacturers to produce invisible joints at high volumes. Instead of the aforementioned airTec process, a laser fuses the edging tape to the panel at speeds of up to 60m/min and delivers perfect quality every time. Compared to conventional glue-based methods, Homag laserTec offers immense benefits and enormously simplifies the edging process. It is a highly effective solution that eliminates unproductive waiting periods and set-up work for colour changes, thus delivering more parts per unit of time. Separate settings for glue

quantity and temperature are no longer required, nor are entries for different materials such as chipboard or MDF. The laserTec system not only produces an invisible surfaceto-edge transition, but the bond achieved between the edge and the panel is considerably stronger and more robust than conventional techniques. Laser technology allows you to achieve consistent production quality and to reduce the staff costs associated with postprocessing and finishing. In comparison to conventional hot-melt glue technology on throughfeed machines, laserTec delivers energy savings of over 40%, as there is no longer any heating-up period required, so no energy is used without productivity.

Simon Brooks concludes: “Homag offers a comprehensive range of edgebanding machinery. From entry level models all the way through to high end volume production lines, there is really no question that we have a solution for every need. “If you’re looking for consistently high edgebanding quality day-in, day-out, there is no better place to start than with Homag UK. Our experienced team is always on hand to provide answers to your questions and to discuss our flexible finance packages, if required.” For a demonstration on any of the Homag edgebanding solutions, call Adele Hunt on 01332 856424. 01332 856500 homag.com

Industry experience at Axminster for young furniture professionals Four young furniture professionals recently attended an industry experience day at Axminster Tools & Machinery. This formed part of a three week programme put together by the Furniture Makers’ Company, with the aim of giving the young professionals an insight into all aspects of the furniture industry including design, manufacture and retailing.* The four young professionals were Ben Brook (customer service advisor at CD (UK)), Sean Duffin ( production manager at Andrew Muirhead & Sons), Lisa Gould Sandall (furniture designer at Ercol) and Sam Ryan (business owner and entrepreneur at Sam Ryan Furniture). The group had already visited other companies including Halstock, DFS, Parker Knoll and Silentnight. Their day at Axminster focused around how the company buys, markets and sells Lamello. The young professionals had the chance to get to grips with a Lamello Zeta, and saw demonstrations using both Clamex and Invis fittings. Also, they had a tour of the premises and spent time with procurement, marketing and in the retail store. The purpose was to give them an understanding of the retail process, from buying and marketing to the sale of a product. Sean Duffin says: “The whole experience so far has been both fascinating and surprising. You really don’t think about what goes on behind the scenes. I really enjoyed my day at Axminster and it was nice to be given the opportunity to get hands-on.” During 2017/18 Axminster will be sponsoring the National Design & Make Competition. The competition is organised by The Furniture Makers’ Company for young furniture makers.

It is open to those who are over 18 and in full or part time education. The design brief will ask students to design a piece of innovative, pioneering wood-based furniture. The first placed winner will be awarded a £1000 Axminster gift card and one week’s work placement at Axminster. All winners will be announced at an event at The Goldsmiths’ Centre in May 2018. Axminster will also be sponsoring the Young Furniture Makers Exhibition taking place this year

Pioneering wood joining

on Tuesday 10th October. The exhibition gives the whole of the furnishing industry the chance to meet the rising stars of the future. axminster.co.uk * The programme is open to aspiring young professionals and graduates who are progressing well through early employment and have aspirations of becoming future leaders of the industry. The three week experience is ideal for those candidates whose employers will sponsor them, although the FMC will also consider applications from those who are currently between jobs.
