Is Enfield rail service heading down the track? Guide INSIDE!
HARTFORD — The Connecticut Department of Transportation has announced the completion and opening of a second track on the CTrail Hartford Line between Hartford and Windsor. CTDOT Commissioner James P. Redeker said, “This is another milestone for the (New Haven-HartfordSpringfield) Rail Program and the Hartford Line service. It also represents another step closer towards the 2030 vision of expanded rail passenger service in New England.” Future phases of construction include installation of a second track between Windsor and Enfield, which is currently in design. It would connect with the existing double track between Enfield and Springfield. Also, the CTDOT is in design for new stations in North Haven, Newington, West Hartford, Windsor, Windsor Locks and Enfield. Construction funding, however, has yet to be secured. Actors Marcella Luby of Stafford and CTDOT continues to seek funds for Michele Vincent of Springfield prepare construction of these stations, as well as to head out as part of the Hayride Of for the second track between Windsor Horror at Sonny's Place in Somers. Connecticut Day at Big E has a north-central look The Big E, “New England’s Great State Fair,” took place Sept. 13-30 in West Springfield. As always, Connecticut Day had a distinctly north-central feel to the festivities. Among the groups taking part in the parade that day were, clockwise, from below, East Windsor, Ellington and Somers.

Stafford Palace Theater and Joanna’s in Somers (pages 25-26) and much more. Of course, this is also the time of year when folks start masquerading as things they are not in search of bags of loot... but enough about the elections. There is also no scarcity of scares in the region this month. For a few of our favorite haunts, check out Sonny’s Place (page 5), The CT Trolley Museum’s “Rails To The Darkside” (page 10) and what is fast becoming known as one of the biggest pulse pounders in Southern New England, Holyoke, Mass.’ DementedFX (page 26). Speaking of “Mass” appeal, despite the advent of All Hallow’s Eve, Thanksgiving and assorted autumnal splendor, the fine folks at Springfield’s Symphony Hall would argue that this October is one of the most magical times of the year. At least Oct. 27, when Mike Super returns for his allnew magic show at the Hall. The Raven caught up with Super for a quick chat.

Magician Mike Super has performed everywhere from “Ellen” to “America’s Got Talent.” On Saturday, Oct. 27, he’ll bring his family-friendly style of illusion to Springfield’s Symphony Hall.
Here’s some of what went down: RAVEN: Thanks for taking the time, Mike. And an interesting time for magic with traditional magicians still practicing the sort of tried and true, Vegas stuff and a sort of new wave of people going much more extreme, darker and edgier. MIKE SUPER: “It is, but it’s a lot like music, you know? You have different styles, and some of what you are referring to I would like to say, metal magic. Then there are the classics like you say.” RAVEN: Then there’s you ... more of everyman, oftentimes wearing jeans and a button-down when you perform? MIKE SUPER: (Laughs) “Yeah, well, I would probably be classified ‘pop’ in my music analogy. But, you know, for me, it’s all about being relatable and accessible. So I just figured somewhere along the line, if I dress how I’m comfortable, people may warm up to me quicker than someone in a tux or dressed goth.”
RAVEN: Right. And I know you’re real name isn’t Mike Super and I guess Matt McConaughy kind of ruined any hopes of the obvious “Magic Mike” for you, huh?
MIKE SUPER: “Yeah ... I don’t have the abs for that. Just ‘Abracadabras.’”
Tickets for Mike Super’s 2.OH! new magic show range from $33-$43 depending on your proximity to the hocus pocus.

Trolley Museum ready to host Pumpkin Patch, Rails to Darkside EAST WINDSOR — The Connecticut Trolley Museum will once again be hosting its popular Halloween events, Pumpkin Patch & Rails to the Darkside. Pumpkin Patch is a family fun-filled adventure where you ride a trolley car to the pumpkin patch field and each child can pick out a free pumpkin. Upon returning to the museum, pumpkins can be decorated, there will be face painting, play areas outside and in the corn box, and the museum can be visited. Admission includes the Fire Truck Museum, on the same property as the Trolley Museum. The event will be Fridays through Sundays starting Oct. 5. Visit www.ct-trolley.org for hours of operation. Pumpkin Patch will also be open Monday, Oct. 8, for Columbus Day. Admission is $12 for adults, $11 for seniors, $10 for ages 4-12, and $3 for ages 3 and under. Museum members receive half off admission. All activities are included in admission. As the fall chill fills the air, on the darkest of nights, mournful cries of the abandoned dead are heard on the tracks at the Trolley Museum. Come for a scare if you dare...the next trolley
ride is an express to the Darkside. During this haunted experience, ride vintage trolleys into the dark woods. Listen to the tale of yesteryear, as you learn of a hastily moved cemetery whose bodies were left behind, their angry souls seeking their revenge. The event runs Friday and Saturday nights starting Oct. 5. This experience is rated PG-13 and may be intense for the squeamish. Hours are 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. (gates open at 6:15 p.m. for ticket sales) and reservations are not needed. Tickets can be purchased only on the night you attend up until 9:30 p.m. Admission is $20 per person and recommended for ages 16 and over. These two fundraising events are important to funding the museum’s many family programs. Darkside is held with the help of Shaker Pines Fire Dept. members, who add a new dimension to the frightfulness of the evening. The Fire Department also benefits from tickets sales with a portion of each ticket sold going to it. The Connecticut Trolley Museum is located at 58 North Road (Route 140). For details, call (860) 627-6540 or visit www.ct-trolley.org.

UTC pauses to mull next move with mill site By Linda Tishler Levinson
EAST WINDSOR — United Technologies Corp. is putting its plans for the Broad Brook mill site on hold. The company, which owns the mill property, had planned to cap and consolidate the contaminated soil on the property. Town officials were concerned because the proposed consolidation area is close to the town’s aquifer. First Selectman Robert Maynard said the company now plans to put those plans on hold and talk to town officials and the state Department of Energy and
Environmental Protection. UTC also is hoping to find a buyer for the property. “It’s a good sign,” Maynard said. The town has looked into the cost of moving the 1,300 cubic yards of contaminated soil offsite. Maynard said they have found a company that estimated the project at $450,000. The town is asking UTC to compare that to what it would cost to bury and monitor the contaminated material at the mill site. The mill is on the National Register of Historic Places. The property includes a former industrial mill building, which was converted into condominiums,
but has been vacant since late 2004. Historically, the site was used for industrial purposes beginning in 1835, including as a woolen mill, gristmill, sawmill and a tannery. In 1849, the Broad Brook Co. bought the mill and manufactured woolen products there until 1951. The company operated a coal gasification plant on a portion of the site, which powered the factory. Ash from the coal-burning activities was spread across much of the site as fill material.

PZC schedules hearing on J4cob’s Park plans By Linda Tishler Levinson
ELLINGTON — The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on the Middle Road proposal on Oct. 9. The proposed project calls for a dek hockey rink, playscape and parking area for town-owned property on Middle Road, Frog Hollow Road and Pinney Street. The park area would be created on land purchased by the town in 2002. The three parcels total 73.3 acres, according to First Selectman Lori Spielman. The property was originally intended for use as a future high school, but the special town meeting records state it could be used for other municipal purposes, such as recreation, athletic facilities or open space, Spielman said. The land is currently leased to a local farmer, and the town earns about $370 a year from that farm. “I view this to be a large asset to the town,” Spielman said of the park proposal. The Jacob Roger Poulin Foundation
ELLINGTON
wants to build J4cob’s Park on Middle Road in memory of Jacob, who died of brain cancer at the age of 5. The park would include an outdoor dek hockey rink and an American Ninja Warrior-influenced playscape. Sarah Poulin said her son loved dek hockey and American Ninja Warriors, and after he died, she and her husband, Steve, wanted to find a way “to share his heart with people.” “He was very compassionate, kind, polite,” even when he was sick, Poulin said. “He was the most amazing person.” Poulin said the plan is for the park to have sections for all ages and abilities. Later plans include a quarter-mile walking track. The first sections to be built are playscapes for children 2-5 and 512. The playscapes will have a rubber surface, to make it more accessible, Poulin said. So far, the foundation has raised $170,000 for the project, as well as a $50,000 grant from Kompan, the manu-
facturer of the playscapes. It is also seeking an additional $150,000 grant. The cost of the first phase is $200,000. The hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Ellington High School
auditorium. Additional information is available in the Town Planner’s Office at Town Hall, the town’s website, ellington-ct.gov and at jrpf.org.

‘Truck Day’ pulls into Hall Memorial Library
ELLINGTON — October brings a wide variety of programs to Hall Memorial Library, 93 Main St. For details on all library programs, visit at www.library.ellington-ct.gov or call (860) 870-3160. Truck Day at Hall Memorial Library will take place Saturday, Oct. 6, rain or shine. Trucks of all shapes and sizes will be parked in the library’s parking lot between 10 a.m.noon. Children of all ages are welcome to visit the trucks, climb aboard, and even toot the horns. This is a free program and no registration is required. The live music Coffeehouse on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. will feature The Edukated Fleas. Ukuleles are small, yet ukulele duo Greg Doyle and Wendy Matthews play the big hits, favoring swing and vintage tunes — as well as a few things you might not expect to hear on a uke. The Fleas have performed at the Clearwater Festival, Ukulele Cabaret, the New York Ukulele Festival, and more. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show. The music is free, and light refreshments, featuring cookies provided by Subway of Ellington, will be available for a donation. Seating is limited on the library website or by calling the library. Sewing lessons with seamstress-in-residence Cheryl Jones continue at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, with Learn to Sew a Chef’s Apron. This workshop is free, but you will be required to bring a few basic items; you will receive a materials list upon registration. Class size is limited. All ages are welcome,
but anyone under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Library favorite Mariann Millard is back at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, with First Ladies: An Adventure in Glamour, Guts & Gumption, her lively, humorous, and engaging talk on the women behind the presidents. Millard will weave historical and modern events and facts about first ladies to help participants understand and appreciate the important role they play and will use personal anecdotes from her time as a licensed DC guide leading tours to enhance her talk. This program is free; pre-registration is required. On Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 6:30 p.m. join Connecticut master wildlife conservationist and bear enthusiast Felicia Ortner for The Bear Reality. Ortner will provide education and facts about bears and help dispel myths and common misunderstandings. She has been studying bears for over 30 years and in the mid-1990s turned her passion for learning about bears into a passion for teaching about them. The Adult Book Club meets the third Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. The theme for this year is “The Game is Afoot,” a Sherlock Holmes canon and pastiche. Ask for this month’s title at the front desk and join in the discussion. Movies for October are Gotti (rated R) Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. and Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.; Ocean’s 8 (PG-13) Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.; Three Identical Strangers (PG-13) Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. and Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.; and Leave No Trace (rated PG) on Oct. 31 at 6:30 p.m. and Nov. 1 at 1 p.m.

Bromson unanimously chosen as new town manager By Linda Tishler Levinson
ENFIELD — Christopher Bromson is the new town manager. The Town Council unanimously voted Sept. 4 to appoint Bromson, who had been serving as acting town manager since May following the resignation of former Town Manager Bryan Chodkowski, who left to become the city manager of Moraine, Ohio. “The council is thrilled that Chris said ‘yes.’ Chris is an entirely known factor,” Mayor Michael Ludwick said
in a written statement. “He’s served this town with distinction and success in several capacities for nearly 30 years. He’s been an exceptional town attorney, public safety director and acting town manager. No one can compete with Chris in either his base of municipal knowledge and experience or his innate people skills. If the last three months is any indication of where we’re headed, Enfield has some great things in store.” Bromson said he is looking forward
to the new position and the opportunities it presents. “It’s been great,” Bromson of the last three months as acting town manager in a written statement. “I’ve gotten to know the dedicated employees and wonderful residents of the Town a little better. While I’ve loved serving as town attorney and director of public safety, both of those positions enhanced my ability to be an effective acting town manager, and ultimately readied me for this exciting challenge
as town manager. It absolutely feels like the next right thing and I’m eager to continue my work with the council, staff, and residents.” Bromson was appointed town attorney in 1989 and served until 2008, returning in 2016. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Boston University and a law degree from Western New England College. He is a member of the Connecticut and federal bar associations.

Transfer station returns to four-day operations By Linda Tishler Levinson
SOMERS — The transfer station will once again be open four days a week. Residents voted to restore the transfer station hours at a Sept. 20 special town meeting. The fiscal year 2018-19 budget had resulted in the reduction of the transfer station hours to Thursdays and Saturdays. The special town meeting was held in response to a petition by residents opposed to the reduced hours. Because of the vote, the transfer station will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The town meeting vote included the appropriation of $49,658 from the General Fund to cover the additional hours. Resident Stephen Krasinski asked why the appropriation was $49,658 if the cost of the additional salaries was $18,000 a year and the town had budgeted an additional $20,000 in revenue from raising transfer station fees from $25 to $35. Brian Wissinger, assistant director of finance, said the salaries would add $19,699, but adding the additional hours would qualify the employees for benefits, which he said bring the added costs. Resident Rich Brown said he feels the transfer station is actually a recycling center and that recycling can’t be done well in just two days a week. Resident Shannon Dow said she felt it was unfair that the residents had been asked to pay more for the transfer station permit, but had the hours cut. “It’s kind of disrespectful,” she said. “You ask us to pay extra and then you cut our services.”

Marathon man proves to be an inspiration at 71
ENFIELD — Kiran Majmudar began his running career at the age of 65. Majmudar was training for the 2012 Hartford Marathon, worried that he would be the oldest runner in his training group. That fear quickly vanished after he crossed the finish line, and he has run the marathon six times since. Majmudar has become an active member in the local running community, meeting fellow runners and volunteers along his journey. This year, one of Majmudar’s grandchildren will take on the marathon with “PopPop” on a day that has become special to the whole family. Majmudar has been named to the Hartford Marathon Foundation’s 2018 Aiello Inspiration Team, a small group of local participants with incredible reasons for stepping up to the start line at

HARTFORD — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced that Aer Lingus service at Bradley International Airport will continue for at least four more years under a new agreement made with the state, committing the airline to continue its transatlantic service at the airport through September 2022. Additionally, Aer Lingus has committed to placing one of its first four A321neoLR aircrafts on the Bradley to Dublin route. The new aircraft will provide added comfort and efficiency. “Bradley International Airport is a major economic driver for Connecticut and it continues to be a key player in our efforts to grow our economy, boost tourism, and improve our transportation system,” Malloy said. “Over the last several years, we have focused our efforts on utilizing this valuable resource to spark growth and increase our economic viability. The addition of Aer Lingus at Bradley has strengthened our economic development efforts, and its success in the Hartford region and ability to provide a direct connection to Europe is having an impact.” Aer Lingus began service at Bradley in September 2016, providing a direct route between Hartford and Dublin. The flight provides easy access to multiple points in Europe and has seen continuous ridership increases year over year since its inaugural flight.
“At Aer Lingus our mission is to be the leading value network carrier on the North Atlantic, and our support for, and commitment to, routes such as Bradley to Dublin is a vital part of our ensuring we realize our mission,” Aer Lingus CEO Stephen Kavanagh said. “Those wishing to connect to Europe from Connecticut can utilize Dublin as a hub, can choose from our extensive European network, and also have the additional benefit of US immigration pre-clearance on their return journey. It is also an attractive proposition for those travelling from Europe, with the resulting positive impact on tourism and business travel to the region. The success of the route over the last two years has proven the model of airlines, airports, and communities sharing risk to bring international air service to previously unserved cities. “Ensuring the continuation of Aer Lingus’ service is a major boost for Connecticut’s businesses and tourism industry,” Connecticut Airport Authority (CAA) Board Chair Tony Sheridan said. “The Dublin service provides an opportunity to tap into a wide array of inbound European markets and we look forward to capitalizing on the momentum of this announcement as we continue selling Connecticut aggressively as a destination for Europeans to do business and visit.”

Stafford Panel reports its school preservation recommendations STAFFORD — The town is at a crossroads when it comes to the historical preservation of the Witt and Pinney school buildings. That is what members of the Stafford Historic Advisory Commission member Steve Squire said at the Sept. 18 Board of Selectmen’s meeting. “Due to the Witt building’s advanced state of deterioration, the historic preservation experts cautioned that the scale of renovation needed to rehabilitate it would require the use of special tactics, such as acquiring historic tax abatements and brownfield grants to make such a project economically feasible,” the commission said in a report
to the selectmen. Referring to proposed commercial and residential projects for the building, the commission said that the “proposed uses of the Witt building that are not educational or municipally oriented in nature would lead to zoning changes and quite possibly cause sale of significant Hyde Park acreage, which is not deemed to be in the public interest,” and recommended that no part of Hyde Park be sold. The commission said Pinney School is in the Stafford Hollow Historic District and is on the state and national Register of Historic Places. As a result, a buyer may be eligible for historic preservation tax credits for exterior
restoration work. The commission recommends “appending easements to the Pinney School deed to preserve the rich diversity of Victorian architecture exhibited in the facade and sides of the building before a sale of the property occurs. Historic District documentation for Stafford Hollow states that the 1895 building is architecturally significant, because ‘it is a good example of an eclectic Queen Anne-style school.’ As such, the easements are intended to protect the exterior of this unique property.” Selectman Rick Hartenstein said he would like to discuss the scope of the restrictions with the realtor and town attorney, as well as the board.
The commission said Pinney School is in the Stafford Hollow Historic District and is on the state and national Register of Historic Places. A buyer may be eligible for historic preservation tax credits for exterior restoration work.

Residents seek review of special-ed services By Linda Tishler Levinson
SUFFIELD — Residents are asking the Board of Education to review special education services in the town’s schools. Tracy Hespelt presented the school board with a petition bearing the verified signatures of 142 residents at its Sept. 4 meeting. The petition asks the board to conduct a comprehensive program review of services and identify the program’s strengths, weaknesses and liabilities, as well as policies, communication, collaboration, transition, appropriately certified staffing and professional development. “We ask you to join us in calling on Suffield Public
Schools administration and Board of Education members to clearly and firmly address concerns within the special education services (especially for those children with serious disability). This petition seeks to continue the work of the CREC report that was developed after being commissioned by the BOE to perform a comprehensive review of special education services in 2011,” the petition reads. The petition also asks that the findings be communicated to the community. “Many in the community have concerns relative to communication, transparency, programming, inclusion, consistency and professional development of staff in special education,” the petition says.
Author to discuss latest
SUFFIELD — How do we know the truth? Hank Phillippi Ryan, a TV reporter in the Boston area and a bestselling author of 10 mysteries, grappled with this in her latest suspense thriller, “Trust Me.” Ryan will talk about this topic at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at Suffield’s 2nd Baptist Church, 100 Hank N. Main St.. This is a Kent Memorial Library program, funded by Phillippi Ryan The Friends of the Library. Ryan said this book surprised her on every level – and changed her life. Sign up for this free program by calling the Kent Memorial Library at (860) 668-3896 or online at suffield-library.org.
“Many in the community have concerns relative to communication, transparency, programming, inclusion, consistency and professional development of staff in special education,” the petition says.
Library discussion series continues
SUFFIELD — Once a month, on Mondays, Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Suffield Senior Center, the Kent Memorial Library presents “Great Discussions.” Feeling the need for community discussions on what is happening in the United States, a group of library patrons instituted this group. Anyone is welcome to join. Sign up at suffield-library.org to receive four short articles ahead of the meetings on which the discussion will be based. Participants are encouraged to read other articles on their own. These are the themes for each discussion: Oct. 15 The Environment; Nov. 19 Hunger in America; Dec. 17 Gender/Racial Equality.
