ELLINGTON — This year, the North Central News celebrates The Barn Yard, a third-generation, family-owned business, with the 2020 NCN Hall of Fame Award. The Barn Yard, located at 120 West Road, has built an outstanding reputation along with its construction of custom post-and-beam buildings, sheds,

pool houses, garages, horse barns and other structures for over 35 years. The North Central News Hall of Fame Award, the selection of which is based on annual readers’ polls to recognize the “Best of” area businesses, goes one step further to verify The Barn Yard brand slogan: “quality second to none.” The Hall of Fame distinction is awarded annually to a local business that

East Windsor

We’re taking steps to grow the tax base First Selectman’s Corner

EAST WINDSOR — I heard loud and clear from constituents that growing our local tax base was a priority for our commuJason Bowsza nity, and that means economic development. We previously announced the location of Gravel Pit Solar in our community, which, once fully built out, will become our largest taxpayer. Earlier this month, the Board of Selectmen made more progress in building out our tax base by approving a deal negotiated with The Silverman Group to locate a distribution facility on Route 5 that will be more than 250,000 square feet. This exciting development fits in perfectly with the Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development, particularly due to its close proximity to our

highway exits. The project is expected to break ground as early as this month and should be completed by the springtime. We also have an opportunity to rebuild our Planning and Development Department in our town government. Recently our town planner and assistant planner moved on to other opportunities. While we look for candidates to replace them, we have contracted with CHA, a consulting firm that has extensive experience supplementing local planning and development departments for services such as planning, regulatory drafting and enforcement, and economic development. Contracting with CHA will allow the town to be selective in staffing replacements, ensuring that we are hiring high-quality candidates and onboarding them in a way that encourages customer service-oriented policies and procedures.

Call for picking updates.

860-623-0409

July and August

The town is also working diligently to foster an open and inclusive sense ofcommunity. The Board of Selectmen will be considering a resolution to establish a Diversity Council that would be charged with collaborating with other boards and commissions to identify areas where members of minority communities may feel excluded as a result of town policies. The council will be asked to help bring awareness to racial sensitivities and provide guidance to elected offi-

cials and professional staff to help create and foster a more inclusive community where all people feel welcomed, included, and represented. We are very grateful for this citizendriven initiative taking form, and we look forward to working with them.

Barn Yard enters the Hall

Tedford named to Wall of Honor

ELLINGTON — The Board of Selectmen has chosen Robert Tedford to be inducted to the Ellington Wall of Honor. Nominated by Cynthia Costanzo, the application referenced Tedford’s 43 years of service as Ellington’s Parks and Recreation director, but also included countless instances where he went above and beyond, serving all members of the community before his untimely passing. A graduate of Ellington High School, Tedford’s journey through various athletic endeavors began well before it became his profession. The dedication he showed in his role as recreation director was unparalleled and left lasting impressions on all he came across. Tedford was responsible for the development and implementation of each and every program in town for over four decades; he searched and advocated for new resources and taught lifelong lessons not only about sports, but about “sportsmanship, fair play, leadership, resilience, and commitment to others,”

as Costanzo stated in her application. Tedford’s contributions to the community also included the Summer Concert Series and the Community Gardens at the Batz Property; he worked tirelessly to provide a wide variety of recreational offerings for all. “Bob touched so many lives, people of all ages. He took on so many roles: supervisor, coach, referee, mentor, the list goes on and on, and there wasn’t a single thing he did that didn’t have a lasting impact on someone,” First Selectman Lori Spielman said. A formal induction ceremony will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. at the site of the Wall of Honor, in Arbor Park off Main Street. The public is invited.

Its wide-range of structures has increased since 2015, when The Barn Yard started a sister company — Great Country Timber Frames — to serve the timber frame home and commercial market. Its 17,000 square-foot manufacturing and design facility at 9 Village St. in Ellington— less than 2 miles from the store — is a fine example of its design, engineering, and building expertise. “Everyone at The Barn Yard is honored to be chosen for this highest accolade. Being a family business, we are always here to support our local community, especially in tough times like this,” said marketing engineer Erik Koehler. He went on to say that, on a daily basis, The Barn Yard puts emphasis on listening to their customers and provides them with the highest quality

in everything it builds. “With less people traveling this summer, we do find that people are paying more attention to their backyards, and we are here to help,” Koehler said. The Barn Yard succeeds last year’s Hall of Fame winner — Johnson Memorial Hospital — and worthy predecessors including the first Hall of Famer, Rockville Bank (now a division of United Bank), named seven years ago. Other local businesses that achieved this highest level of excellence through the years are Sonny’s Place, Bolles Motors, financial planner Harry Kent, Geissler’s supermarkets, and Lori Spielman Landscaping. But there’s more to crow about. Throughout this edition you’ll find “best” business in many categories, including (like The Barn Yard) home improvement areas, for the special place you call home.

Isaias packs a punch in north-central CT

ENFIELD — Several north-central Connecticut communities that experienced multiday power outages in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Isaias. Enfield experienced several road closures, downed trees, and downed power lines as a result of the Aug. 4 storm. Approximately 6,103 Eversource Enfield customers still were without power as two days later and 23 roads were closed. As of 11 a.m. on Aug. 9, more than 700 Enfield customers were still without power. “We have been more than patient waiting for Eversource to restore power to thousands of Enfield residents.” Town Manager Christopher W. Bromson said in a press release. “The delay of response is appalling.” The town issued a letter to Eversource stating its disappointment with the response. “We applaud Governor Lamont’s call for an investigation into Eversource’s failings and unpreparedness,” Bromson said.

Don’t let guard down against COVID-19 cabin fever

First Selectman’s Corner

SOMERS — We have had over four months of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and I suspect that all of us are getting weary and suffering “cabin fever” as we follow the multiple dictates of Gov. Ned Lamont’s numerous executive orders. C.G. Bud Knorr We’ve successfully survived the Phase I and Phase II rules for reopening society and we’re anticipating Phase III guidelines to be issued shortly. These guidelines in the newest phase promise more leeway and freedom. Despite the frustration we all feel with our normal

daily routines being curtailed and altered, the measures we have taken as a state and in Somers have successfully mitigated the spread of this disease. I would like to thank and acknowledge all of our citizens for adhering and following these necessary guidelines that have resulted in Connecticut having one of the lowest rates of transmission, hospitalization, and positive cases in the country. In addition, our emergency management team is to be complimented for its organizational, proactive, and timely response that has been instrumental in keeping us all safe. We have learned a lot these past months about what we did right and what we have to do in the future to better prepare us for the next inevitable crisis.

Teeing up on a few more categories

Best Golf Pro Lessons Jeff Swanson - Cedar Knob Golf Course 446 Billings Road Somers, CT 06071 (860) 749-3550 For 26 years, golf pro Jeff Swanson has been eager to help perfect your golf swing. He is the guy to contact for golf lessons at Cedar Knob. He strives to personalize his lessons with all his golfers to create a welcoming learning environment. “I work with what the golfer has for ability and what their goals are,” he said. His favorite part of his work is the interaction. He meets so many people from different places and ages. He finds it enjoyable to help everyone he works with.

Best Golf Course Rolling Meadows, Ellington 76 Sadds Mill Road Ellington, CT 06029 (860) 870-5328 Rolling Meadows’ scenic views and well-maintained golf 18-hole course are sure to leave golfers satisfied. “The first nine holes feature rolling hills and gently undulating greens, while the back nine holes demand accurate play thanks to the narrowing fairways lined with towering trees,” according to its website. The course is well-prepared for their golfers. Schedule a tee time to see what the gorgeous features and welcoming service are all about.

With this in mind the Board of Selectmen has established a Short and Long Term Recovery Committee to create a plan which meets the needs of the community, accelerates recovery, and expedites and improves the coordination between our Emergency Management team and various state agencies. I encourage all Somers residents to fill out this important COVID-19 response survey that is available in the Somers Connects magazine. The COVID-19 response survey is also available online at www.somersct.gov. Keep the faith and don’t forget to social distance/wash your hands. This is making a difference. AAHA Accredited

Best Reason to Cross the State Line MGM Springfield Resort One MGM Way Springfield, MA 01103 (413) 273-5000 mgmspringfield.mgmresorts.com Readers say a stop at our neighboring state’s casino is a sure thing. The venue offers one-stop shopping with restaurants, entertainment, and more to roll out the gaming experience. After a COVID19 closure the nearly three-year-old enterprise reopened mid-June, with the exception of hotels, which will open at a later date. Best Place to Yuck it Up/Comedians Bobby V’s 11 Schoephoester Road Windsor Locks, CT 06096 (860) 627-5808 www.bobbyvsrestaurant.com COVID-19 is no joke – and has put Bobby V’s comedy shows on hold for now — but dining inside or outside has opened up, as well as curbside pick-up.

Best Place for Live Music The Palace Theater 75 Main St. Stafford Springs, CT 06076 (860) 851-9780 www.palacetheaterct.org Though still closed due to COVID19, the website indicates the curtain is slated to rise again on Oct. 16 with David Foster at the piano, accompanied by hand-picked vocalists and musicians. Meanwhile, as you wait for your favorite music venue to reopen, why not add to your listening collection at home? The Final Word on Vinyl Award The Music Outlet 151 Hazard Ave. Suite 14 Enfield, CT 06082 (860) 749-2050 Music Outlet on Facebook “They’ve got what you crave,” says one fan. This great spot for all kinds of hard-to-find vinyl is back in business after a COVID-19 hiatus.

For the best reason to cross the state line, North Central News readers say to head north to the MGM Springfield resort. After a COVID-19 closure earlier in the year, the casino reopened in mid-June with the exception of the hotel, which will reopen at a later date.

Suffield

We’re continuing efforts against COVID-19 First Selectwoman’s Corner

SUFFIELD — Community-oriented and conscientious residents across the state have enabled Connecticut to be one of the few states Melissa Mack nationwide making steady progress against COVID-19. In Suffield, we especially celebrated the recent good news of marking a second full week with no active cases in Suffield House. We should all be very proud and appreciative of these efforts and progress. Unfortunately, the battle is not yet over, as evidenced elsewhere. A review of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website reveals that as of this writing, over 4.4 million Americans have contracted COVID19, with more than 150,000 succumbing to it. Perhaps most concerning to us is the increase in Connecticut’s teen/young

adult population. This group plays a crucial role in mitigating spread. While it is easy to become complacent given our current environment, we urge all residents to continue practicing mask-wearing, social distancing and hand-washing. Failing to adhere to these measures poses a great risk to getting students back to school this fall, parents back to work, and the economy back in action. We truly are all in this together. Many have reached out looking for more context to the available COVID19 data. Connecticut COVID-19 Data Tracker contains extensive information, regularly updated. However, given the virus’ behavior and delays in reporting, this should be viewed retrospectively. Days and more often weeks pass from disease transmission, symptom onset, testing, reporting and potential hospitalization. The result: current data is more accurately a snapshot of disease progression from at least two

weeks prior and should be analyzed within that framework. Basketball courts at McAlister/ Suffield Middle School were closed recently due to COVID-19 related issues around social-distancing and trash. Water bottles, etc. were consistently left on the court, requiring town employees to handle the potentially contaminated items. The court will open with the following restrictions subject to police enforcement: no littering; no gambling; spectators must remain 6 feet apart or wear masks; courts close at sunset. The court will be closed again if the above rules are not followed. Over the past few weeks, residents also have expressed concern about the potential spread of COVID-19 in our community due to the number of outof-state users at Sunrise Park. To be clear, it is illegal to bar entrance to a public park. Gate attendants are on duty weekends from 10

a.m. – 6 p.m. to help with social distancing and compliance with park rules. Additionally, new Sunrise Park Superintendent Tom O’Brien officially assumed his responsibilities and moved into the park’s on-site home late last week. We anticipate his presence will be benefit the park greatly. To support parents returning to work, we have asked town departments to explore municipal child care as a potential option. A parent survey facilitated by Suffield Public Schools Superintendent Van Tasel was recently completed and in part assesses the need and comfort level in utilizing this service should it be offered. Possible locations include the schools and the Suffield Senior Center, given its likely closure to seniors until the availability of a vaccine. Rest assured, if the program locates to the Senior Center, it will be temporary and popular Grab & Go Meals will continue to be provided. We’ll keep everyone informed as plans develop.
