Stir the Pot to close

After 11 “amazing and unforgettable years,” Stir the Pot in East Windsor has announced that it is closing Dec. 23. “We have considered every feasible way to remain open, however, with the rising food costs, staff shortages and our head cook retiring, it is not possible,” Stir the Pot wrote in a Facebook post. “This was one of the most difficult decisions we have had to make because we love Stir the Pot, our loyal customers and our wonderful team of people who have made this place what it is. We are fortunate to have made so many friends through the years. There are no words to express how thankful we are for every individual who has walked through our doors over the past 11 years.” The restaurant urged those with gift cards or loyalty reward points to redeem these before Dec 23.

Obituary Obituary Longtime NCCCC director, Rotarian dies

Lawrence P. “Larry” Tracey Jr., 77, of Somers, formerly of Enfield, beloved husband of Michele (Alexis) Tracey for 56 years, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, Saturday Nov. 5, 2022.

Larry was born in Norwich and was the son of the late Lawrence P. and Juliette (Gauvin) Tracey.

Larry grew up in East Hartford with his parents, and his brother Wayne. While in high school, Larry met Michele. After graduating from East Hartford High School, he attended the University of Hartford. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict and attended the US Naval Justice School.

Larry always put family first. He was an amazing husband and dad to Michele and their three daughters, sharing his love of sports with them, spending summer vacations at the beach and supporting all their activities.

Larry began his career in Insurance with the Travelers Insurance Co. as a Claims Adjuster, and later was employed by the Glastonbury Insurance Agency. In 1976, Larry opened the Tracey Insurance Agency in Enfield and successfully oper ated his business in the Enfield commu nity for more than 30 years before retir ing and selling the business to Burns, Brooks & McNeil Insurance.

He became the Executive Director of the North Central Connecticut Chamber of Commerce in 2002, retiring in 2011. He served as an executive board mem ber for the NCCCC and was also Past President. A culmination of over 30 years with the NCCCC, Larry was instrumental in organizing many suc cessful Chamber events including the annual golf tournament, Breakfast Connections, and Business After Hours.

As a Rotarian, Larry proudly served in many roles in the Enfield Rotary Club including past president, and was a recip ient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He

was one of the founders of the Enfield Rotary Classic, which supported girls basketball at both Enfield High School and Fermi High School. The tournament was a huge success for 26 years raising thousands of dollars in keeping the bas ketball programs prolific.

When Larry wasn't doing anything involving sports, he was doing sports. His devotion was apparent as a member of the East Hartford High School football team and through his involvement as a high school and college football and basketball official. As a member of the EAIFO and CCAFO, he officiated in the Big East and A10 conferences and served as president of the Central Connecticut Association of Football Officials. He was inducted into the CCAFO Hall of Fame in 2008. Additionally, he was bestowed the George Daly Jr. Special Recognition Award by the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame. He retired following an on-field injury in 1994 and became an off-field official as an electron ic clock operator for UCONN football

games at Rentschler Field.

Besides his wife Michele, Larry is sur vived by his three daughters, Theresa Solesky and her husband David of Ft. Pierce, FL, Andrea Gately and her hus band Stephen of Bedford, NH, Melissa Egan and her husband Timothy of Somers. Larry’s pride and joy were his grandchildren, Chase Solesky, Patrick and Christopher Gately, and Olivia and Isabella Egan. He spent many hours watching his grandchildren play sports as their biggest fan and listening to them sing. He also leaves a brother, Wayne C. Tracey of Newington, his sister-in-law Constance Houde and her husband Robert of West Hartford, several nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.

Donations in Larry’s memory may be made to the Enfield Rotary Memorial Scholarship Fund, PO Box 1, Enfield, CT 06083 and to the Alzheimer’s Association, 200 Executive Blvd S #4b, Southington, CT 06489. To leave online condolences please visit www.leetestevens.com.

Credit union presents Teacher Grant Awards

ENFIELD — The Tobacco Valley Teachers Federal Credit Union has announced the recipients of its 2022 Teacher Grant Award.

The credit union began this program in an effort to assist their members who are educators in funding equip ment, supplies, or training.

The recipients this year are Taryn Jennings, language arts consultant at Enfield Street School, and Jane Vyce, speech/language pathologist at East Windsor Middle School.

Jennings is using her grant funds to purchase a Little Free Library which will be installed outside the school to allow students access to books in order to inspire them to become lifelong readers.

Vyce is using her grant funds to pur chase speech therapy materials, including vocabulary, language, and reasoning books and photo cards. These will help students who are affected by skill deficits by increasing their vocabulary and grammar skills, which will lead to improved compre

hension of spoken and written materi als.

“With increasing restraints on budg ets and funding for educators, we wanted to offer some assistance. Our grant is open to our members who are educators at schools within our field of membership. Two grants are available annually. It is our hope that this fund ing will add to the level of education that is offered to our area students.” said Lori Triba, manager/CEO for the Tobacco Valley Teachers Federal Credit Union.

For more information about the credit union, visit www.tvtfcu.org, call 860-253-4780 or stop by the office at 182 South Road in Enfield.

TVTFCU is a not-for-profit, mem ber owned, financial co-operative which has been serving its members since 1936. Financial services include savings and checking accounts, youth accounts, online account management, a variety of loans, mortgages and more.

Jane Vice, left, of East Windsor Middle School, and Taryn Jennings of Enfield Street School have been named this year’s recipients of the Tobacco Valley Teachers Federal Credit Union Teacher Grant Awards.

Mayor’s corner

ENFIELD — As we transition from Thanksgiving to the holiday season, I want to express my appreciation for the many town employ ees that work across the various departments.

Recently we honored dozens of staff members who were celebrating mile stone anniversaries of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 35 years of service. Crossing guards, child care workers, police officers, library staff, public works crews, EMS, bus drivers, and employees from Town Hall gathered for breakfast at the Old Country Banquet Hall and to receive a token of appreciation from the Town Manager’s Office and Town Council.

Finding qualified employees who are interested in working for municipal gov ernment has become increasingly demanding over the last few years since the pandemic, as so many companies

have transitioned to people working from home and people have changed their career paths. Public service is also often portrayed in a negative light, with angry taxpayer and/or lazy worker stereotypes. In my time as mayor I can attest that is far from the reality. The Town of Enfield employs hundreds of people in rewarding careers and we are looking

for more. We hire custodians, account ants, finance clerks, project managers, laborers, paramedics, lawyers, plan ners, child care workers, engineers, social workers, police officers, and a wide range of talented administrative support staff. In return, these employ ees receive competitive salaries, health insurance, paid holidays, opportunities

town moving

for advancement, and the potential to earn a pension for their retirement.

Through COVID, Storm Isaias, snowstorms and more, the town employees are there for the town. I hope that those reading this column may consider a career in public service, which has come a long way since the start of civilization in Athens, Greec,e over 2,000 years ago.

At that time, people were asked to pledge an oath to the city in order to gain citizenship. The oath read in part “We will never bring disgrace on this our City by an act of dishonesty or cowardice; We will fight for the ideals and sacred things of the City both alone and with many; We will revere and obey the City’s laws, and we will transmit this City not only, not less, but greater and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.”

On behalf of the Town of Enfield, I extend my best wishes to all of the North Central News readers for a happy and healthy holiday season.

ENFIELD — Opera House Players feature presentation inn November was “RENT!”

This production was directed by Eric Boucher, with music direction by Graham Christian, and choreog raphy by Karen Anne McMahon.

“I first fell in love with this rock opera over 25 years ago as it became a pop culture sensation rev olutionizing musical theater,” Boucher said. “Its themes of love, commercialism, human dignity, artistic struggles, the importance of community, and what defines a family are still relevant today. I was blessed by the support and collabo ration of the perfect cast and pro duction team.”

One cast member said, “Most of us met for the first time at auditions and then were immediately required to be vulnerable and trust each other. But the production team fos tered a safe atmosphere for us to grow. The love you see on stage isn’t acting—it’s true, deep, and full of mutual respect.

“Each of these 16 people brings something so unique and beautiful to this story. I leave every rehearsal so excited for what we are making and feel so ridiculously lucky to be a part of this talented family, telling this story, and celebrating this love.”

RENT pins were available for $2 each in the lobby, with 50% of the proceeds going to New Directions in Enfield.

New Directions is a private, non profit, licensed, outpatient facility providing drug and alcohol treat ment, intervention, prevention, community education, and referral services to youth and adults.

Since its premiere in 1996, Jonathan Larson's iconic Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical has become a source of joy and strength for millions. It has become more than a musical – it’s a cultural touchstone. The score spans a range of genres including rock, pop, gospel, tango, and more. This eclecticism allows the cast to show off their stylistic range and creates a captivating listening experience.

RENT! follows year in life of young artists, musicians

continued from page 32

Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT is about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today. RENT has become a pop cultural phe nomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences. Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's RENT fol lows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musi cians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and

emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an out sider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.

At the start of a second century of service, the Somers Women’s Club continues to multitask as only a talented group of smart, community-minded ladies can.

In just the last month, the group started a knitting and crocheting group, wrapped up a profitable candy drive, and set into motion the plans for its annual holiday toy drive, among other projects.

100 years of service

Highlighting the club’s busy fall agenda, a tree planting and dedication ceremony at the Somers Town Common on Battle Street marked the 100th anniver sary of the Somers Women's Club in late October.

Club President Goldie Hyde accepted a proclamation from Somers First Selectman Tim Keeney commemorating the club’s

long history of service to the com munity since it became a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in October 1921.

Ginny Basch, who held the shovel with Club Secretary Susan Peck at the event, reflected on her family’s longtime membership. “My grandmother and my mother both belonged to the Somers Women Club.

Women’s Club moves into 2nd century of serving others

“Years later I joined and right away I was asked to do things to help the club. I’ve always found it very rewarding. As I was at the 100th anniversary tree planting dedica tion, I felt that I was meant to be there.”

In 1921 the club’s first project funded the cost of library cards. Within two years it assisted in organizing the Visiting Nurse Association. In its second decade the Somers Women’s Club started the Fire Department and purchased a fire truck with matching funds from the town. By its 50th anniversary it established the Friends of the Somers Library organization.

In addition, over the years the group has supported schools, Scouts, senior cit izens, Johnson Memorial Hospital, the Network Against Domestic Abuse, food banks, the arts and other fundraisers.

Penchant for fun, too

It’s not all work and no play for its mem bers, as witnessed at the club’s October meeting when a luncheon guest offered a hint to one of the best kept secrets in town – future plans of the historic Somers Inn.

Monique Lussier, a club member for over 10 years, thought to invite the speak er when a friend mentioned her brother had purchased the Somers landmark. “We always have speakers,” Lussier said. “So I reached out to ask if he would speak.”

Thomas J. McMahon said yes and shared some of the history of the building with members at the Somers Congregational Church. Thomas said the property dates back to having been the first stagecoach stop between Boston and Hartford. He added, “There are many rumors of George Washington and Paul Revere being there, though there is no documentation for that – but the timeline does line up and make sense.”

Thomas called renovation of the icon ic inn “a family endeavor” that will “try to honor all the history while connecting a little bit more of a modern aspect of functionality as we move inside.” This something-old, something-new vision already holds true in the restaurant’s new name, the Iron Fox at the Somers Inn. As of press time, there was no offi cial opening set yet for the Iron Fox.

New endeavors

The Women’s Club continues its over 100-year capacity to extend its activities while continuing traditional events. “Stitch Together,” the new knitting and crocheting group, met for the first time last month.

In November the club donated over 800 books to the Literacy, Elementary Childhood Education Department at Central Connecticut State University. The ladies are working with the Resident State Troopers’ annual Fill A Cruiser drive to collect toys for needy children under the direction of Social Services. They invite the community to bring new toys to the unlocked cruiser at 451 Main St. during daylight hours through Dec. 11.

Club members lined Main Street with hanging baskets, decked the front of Town Hall with garland, lights, and lanterns, and filled Haymarket Common with lights, garland, colorful baskets, and Santa’s sleigh and rein deer. Members fanned out to put greens at Heritage Park gazebo and other spots. This is the ninth year the club has decorated Stafford for the holidays, using greens collected by members and money donated by local businesses and community members.

The story follows eight intertwined sto ries in a Midwestern mall on the last day of shopping. There’s a kindly mall Santa, an overeager mall cop, brainy misfit teenagers, a newlywed couple, a battling pair of actors involved in a production of “A Christmas Carol,” and more.

This production is general admission, with no reservations required. A $10 dona tion is suggested at the door.
