Car-related crime shifts into overdrive By Laura B. Hayden

Caught in the act A home-security camera captured a man attempting to break into a Somers car in the owner’s driveway on March 3 at 7:20 a.m.

Courtesy photo

At about 7:30 a.m. one morning last month, a Somers resident noticed a number of parked cars on her sparsely populated street and then, to her surprise, a “kid stroll through my front yard and pull on my car doors.” Luckily the doors were locked. “At first I thought it was kids just goofing around,” said the homeowner, who turned to the Somers public forum on Facebook page to report her dismay by posting photos of the incident from a home security camera. But soon another member of the forum reported that the black Audi with Massachusetts license plates that could be seen in the photos was stolen the night before from a gas station in Wethersfield. By the time family members spoke with State Trooper Michael Hevey about the incident, he already knew that the suspicious car had been spotted in another town.

East Windsor First Selectman’s Corner

Respect is the byword for planning clerk EAST WINDSOR — We would like you to meet Peg Hoffman, administrative clerk for the Planning and Zoning Department. The Town of East Windsor would like to congratulate Peg for 15-plus years of service and dediJason Bowsza cation. Here is what Peg had to say about working for the Town of East Windsor: Aretha Franklin and I have something in common – R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Respect is a huge part of who I am as a person, and how I hope I treat others. Before I came to East Windsor I worked for a large corporation, which is a totally different environment than East Windsor’s municipal offices. When we speak of community we think of the physical boundaries of the town, but it really begins with the community that comprises its employees. Everyone actually cares about each other, and spends a few seconds in passing sharing the camaraderie of a little conversation. Even when we deal with each other for opposing reasons we still do that with respect. Working for the

town is a little like working in a family-orientated business. When someone moves on we regret their passage but we also welcome new arrivals with warmth and anticipation. My current job is within the planning office. All of my career has been real-estate related. My job in the planning office is kind of a backroom position, as I work behind the scenes being administrative support for the commissions that function under our department. Respect works into that as well, as I have great admiration for the people who volunteer – unpaid – for positions on the boards or commissions and want to do their best to promote East Windsor as the great community that it is. Helping those commissioners have the tools and materials they need to make hard decisions and plan for the Town’s future is gratifying for me. COVID has made their job so much more difficult; if I can ease the change for them it’s my privilege to do so. I also work as a recording secretary for several of the town’s boards; being able to give a voice to the residents as well as the board members is something I’m proud of. Thank you Peg for all your hard work!

East Windsor First Selectman Jason Bowsza stands with Peg Hoffman, who has worked for the town as the administrative clerk of the Planning and Zoning Department for more than 15 years.

East Windsor All bets are off: Legislators disappointed by abandoned casino plan EAST WINDSOR — Members of the town’s legislative delegation, including state Sen. Saud Anwar (D-South Windsor), state Reps. Jaime Foster (D-East Windsor), and Carol Hall (R-Enfield), along with East Windsor First Selectman Jason E. Bowsza, have expressed their disappointment at the recent announcement of an agreement between Connecticut tribes and Gov. Ned Lamont’s office that would expand casino play and availability in the state but abandons the planned East Windsor casino project in the process. The delegation expressed their dissatisfaction with what they see as East Windsor being left behind by the state, especially as the decision in question was made without their consultation. Members of the delegation seek a constructive conversation with stakeholders about the rationale that led to this decision. “This agreement has positive factors for Connecticut, but it’s nothing but bad news for East Windsor,” Anwar said. “Two years after the East Windsor casino first received approval to move forward, for it to be abandoned is incredibly disappointing.

“This agreement has positive factors for Connecticut, but it’s nothing but bad news for East Windsor,” state Sen. Saud Anwar said. “The delegation is especially concerned that these decisions were made without receiving input from any East Windsor stakeholders, especially as the project has already broken ground. We are highly concerned and upset about this turn of events and hope to find a way to discuss the rationale behind these decisions from major stakeholders.” Foster said that she was “disappointed to hear that Ellington and East Windsor will not receive the revenue that they were looking forward to acquiring. “However, I am optimistic that the East Windsor delegation and I can work with the governor’s office to find critically needed economic development opportunities in our community.” Hall also was taken aback by the decision to aban-

don the casino plan. “The recent decision to eliminate East Windsor as a potential location for a casino is very disappointing and comes at quite a surprise to me and my colleagues,” she said. “From the onset, both the town and state delegation have fully supported its construction and to have the governor’s office choose to eliminate this option without consulting local leaders or the municipal government is puzzling. “I look forward to joining my fellow House and Senate representatives and sitting down with the governor’s office to try and understand the motivation behind this sudden change in order to determine next steps for bringing a casino to the town.” Bowsza said, “Whatever the benefit of this new deal may be for the state, it is certainly a direct economic loss to the Town of East Windsor. Most troubling is that this deal ties up nearly 30 acres of commercially developable property located on a major highway and between two highway exits for 10 years or more. “This is a real handicap imposed on us by the state, and we certainly hope there will be some meaningful consideration in terms of providing additional, direct state revenue to the town.”

Community Gardens plows into new season EAST WINDSOR — The Agricultural Commission will celebrate its season opening at noon Saturday, April 17, at The Community Gardens. The event will feature a plowing demonstration. COVID safety practices will be

adhered to at the event. Those who attending are asked to wear a mask and space yourself 6 feet apart. The rain date will be at noon Saturday, April 24. Plots will be available for use beginning May 1.

ENFIELD — At 6:14 a.m. on March 24, the Enfield Police Department dispatch center was notified of a structure fire at the Casket Building, located at 33 North River Street. The building was entirely engulfed by flames. Enfield Dueling Pianos performers hold keys to ACC fundraiser

20 North Central News April 2021

ENFIELD — Asnuntuck Community College’s Foundation is planning an outdoor fundraising event for Thursday, May 20, at LaNotte Under the Tent in East Windsor. “Dueling Pianos-Music and Song for Scholarships” will feature New York City Upscale Dueling Pianos performers Steve Laureti and David Ross. The performing duo will entertain the audience in an interactive evening, featuring a variety of tunes, including the music of Billy Joel, Journey, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen and more. Those in attendance will have the opportunity to battle to tip for scholarships to hear their favorite song. Robyn Lee Miller from MorningBird Media and Jeffrey Lomma from Northwestern Mutual are the event’s co-chairs. Other members of the event planning committee are Vicki Clark, Connecticut Commercial Realty, Linda Cote, Webster Bank, Glenn Ford, Phoenix Manufacturing, Tim St. James, Asnuntuck Community College, and Margaret Van Cott, CSCU. Funds raised from the event will be used to help support student scholarships and programs at the college. The evening is set to begin at 6 p.m. and will also include an hors d’oeuvres reception and a silent auction. “We are beyond excited for this unique event. This is a great opportunity for our community to come together and make a meaningful investment in our future workforces and a great time outdoors under the tent

with legendary music that supports Asnuntuck students and programs,” Lomma said. Sponsorship opportunities from $2,500-$130 are available. Top tier sponsorships include a business or family named student scholarships, digital media exposure, special song requests and event recognition, and tickets. Tickets are $65 a person and $120 a couple. To view a full list of sponsorship opportunities and to purchase tickets, visit asnuntuck.edu/donate. Miller said, “While we've all faced adversities this past year, we have done so as a community. This lovely evening of music and fun will give us the ability to gather safely for a great cause and resume some sense of normalcy. This is my seventh year serving on the Asnuntuck Foundation Committee and my third year as co-chair, and I am looking forward to conversing with old friends, singing all my favorite tunes, and enjoying an outdoor evening, all while knowing that we are able to help students attend college and work towards their goals and dreams!” For additional information on the event visit asnuntuck.edu/events, or contact Keith Madore, executive director of the Asnuntuck Foundation at kmadore@asnuntuck.edu or (860) 253-3041. New York City Upscale Dueling Pianos performers Steve Laureti and David Ross will present “Dueling PianosMusic and Song for Scholarships” on May 20.

Jeannie Miller initially asked people to send Kilty some “happy mail” and then followed up by organizing a parade line that originated in the Ocean State Job Lot parking lot (at right) and went to Kilty’s home. Somers A stylish new twist on salon ownership comes to town By Laura B. Hayden SOMERS — Modern Salon Concepts, located at 112 Main St., adds a new dimension to the age-old tradition of a salon. By definition, a salon is “a gathering of people held by an inspiring host.” In this case, the “inspiring host” is owner Don Demers, who bought the property – the former site of Frankie’s Firehouse Pizza – in the fall of last year. The inspiration comes with Demers’ implementation of one of the fastest-growing trends in the salon industry – salon suites. Each suite, or “mini-salon,” is a ready-made working space within the building that Demers rents to beauty and health professionals looking to start their own businesses. “Each renter takes care of their own business,” said Demers, who had been in the hair styling business for 30 years before stepping into this new role. “I take care of the start-up costs. It’s self-policing. They can decorate the rented space as they please – take care of their own business.” The suites offer an affordable professional advantage from hair stylists having to either “rent” a chair in a shop owned by someone else or be a commissioned stylist. “I’ve had a great response,” Demers said. As of late March, eight of the 10 suites at Modern Salon Concepts were contracted to mostly hair stylists. Demers plans to use an 11th suite himself. He does not see competition among the renters as an issue, saying, “They are bringing their customers with them.” Most of the renters opt for six-month leases, which can be renewed. Still, they are not committed to a contract for very long if a better opportunity for ownership comes their way. “I like to see these young entrepreneurs succeed,” Demers said, whether they are coming to him to avoid start-up costs or branching out on their own after renting for a while at Modern Salon Concepts.

Somers Wonder & Wander: Self-led nature events planned at Story Barn SOMERS — Make a pinecone critter, a suncatcher, or a seed-starter pot. Grab a magnifying glass and explore the tiny world at your feet. Build a cairn of rocks, befriend a tree, explore the wonders of a babbling brook. Just let your imagination and wonder lead. The Bowers and LaJoie families of The Story Barn in Somers (home to the Frieda B. book series) invite you and the children you love to come to the barn and do all of this and more during one of their Spring Wonder & Wander self-led events in nature. The Story Barn’s 7 acres boast open land, meadows, woods, trails, a pond, a brook — even a 100plus-year-old watering trough turned into a water fountain. It’s an idyllic place for kids to, well, be kids. The Spring Wonder & Wander self-led events are scheduled on Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Registered guests can arrive when they like and leave when they like within that three-hour timeframe. Upon arrival, they are given a basket of craft supplies and activity ideas and a dedicated space on The Story Barn’s expansive front acreage to use as home base. Each of the four weeks of the Wonder & Wander series has a different variety of nature-based crafts to

make, based on a specific theme: “Trees,” “Seeds,” “Critters,” and “Blooms.” For social-distancing purposes, guests are welcomed to remove masks when at their home base; when wandering the property, masks are required when in the presence of others. Frieda B. author Renata Bowers is on site for these events, and believes strongly in the opportunity for kids to have self-led adventures in nature. “We created these events out of a desire to provide freedom in play and exploration of nature to children and the adults who love them,” she said. “As human beings, we seem to be aching for opportunities to be together, outdoors.

We’ve created that here … and added a basket of delightful resources, because who doesn’t love that?” Children are $20 per person, per event. Adults and children under 3 are free. To register, visit www.FriedaB.com/ W&W. Spring dates are April 21 and 24; May 5, 8, 19 and 22; and June 2 and 5. Questions about the events can be directed to info@FriedaB.com or (860) 763-0330. The Story Barn is located at 952 Main St. in Somers.

Local couple working a little business magic By Laura B. Hayden STAFFORD — Who among us could not use a little magic in our lives? The tool of the trade – the magic wand – so well managed in the hands of Glinda, the Good Witch, Cinderella’s fairy godmother, and, of course, Harry Potter – can

become an instrument of your own enchantment with a visit to OrchardWorks, a one-of-a-kind shop at 13 Furnace Ave. whose sole product is wand-making. Whether you visit the store in person or shop online at orchardworksct.com, you’ll find more varieties of the charming accessory than you can shake a magical stick at. “We have nearly 150 different wood types in stock,” said Ed Bareiss, an aerospace engineer by day who, with his wife Janet, hand-carves the wands. Janet, a former teacher, now works full-time fashioning the wands. Ed’s own wand is made of English oak, the second most common tree in the United Kingdom. Janet’s is made of Argentine lignum vitae. “Entirely different styles,” Ed said. They both admit to favoring working with the lignum vitae, which is Latin for the “tree of life,” but Ed said the “the real guayacan is even nicer.” Also a lignum vitae, the guayacan is a South and Central American timber tree typically with strong dense hard wood. He referred to the “amazing feel and smell both woods have, admitting, “It’s tough to have one favorite” with so many woods in stock.

We’re happy to have been providing

Janet Bareiss works on fashioning a wand at Orchard Works, left, while Ed Bareiss hand carves at wand at far left. Photos by Laura B. Hayden OrchardWorks invites customers to “choose your own wand, let your wand choose you, or design your special custom wand.” The most unique and expensive wand OrchardWorks has wrought is “a Kingwood piece, with a carved rose, 20 crystals inset with carved bones wrapping all around,” said Ed. Though that memorable piece cost close to $500, a Harry Potter inspired solid wood wand can cost as little as $10. “We love making those,” Ed said. All are uniquely finished, with no two alike. Though Orchard Works is not affiliated

with Harry Potter, Universal, Warner Brothers, or JK Rowling, it remains one of the only places that will make a custom wand based on characteristics a Potter fan can “discover” about their “personal” wand on Wizard World’s Pottermore website. In a way, the business of wand-making chose the Bareisses to work its magic. “When my daughter turned 9, her Harry Potter birthday theme was the impetus to try making some wands.” That was over 10 years ago. Ed started offering them online, which then expanded per customer requests — and it has just kept growing.

said Mike Hennessy Jr., president and CEO of MJH Life Sciences, parent company of dvm360. “Both of their practice designs truly stood out among the contestants, and we look forward to celebrating their success in front of their colleagues and peers at our dvm360 Fetch Conference in Kansas City in August.” VCA West Coast was winner of the Hospital of the Year award in the over8,000-square-feet category. VCA strives to continuously improve the standard of care for its hospitals and veterinary medicine through the compassionate, high-quality primary and specialty care at a nationwide family of over 1,000 hospitals. VCA’s team combines dedication to helping animals with care to deliver the medical expertise animals deserve, and that owners can trust. Car theft becomes increasing problem in state (continued from page 1) Somers is not the only North Central Connecticut town that has been plagued with frequent attempts of car theft. ‘If you look at the state overall, this is an increasing problem,” State Trooper Michael Hevey said. For example: • Suffield police recently reported nine vehicles were stolen in 2018, but that number tripled to 31 last year. • Last fall Vernon reported spikes in car-related crimes. • In late February an unlocked vehicle in Windsor Locks had visible cash stolen while parked at Village Pizza on Route 75 in the afternoon. Later that evening police reported a car was stolen outside the adjacent Izumi restaurant. Nationwide, officials have blamed the worrisome trend of increased carrelated crime on the pandemic, which has allotted more “free time” to teens and adults. In addition, some juveniles are engaging in a “game” on the social media Snapshat site that encourages

A suspect in an attempted car theft runs from the scene in Somers. Car theft has become an increasing issue in the region, the state, and nationwide, with some officials blaming the pandemic on the increase. them to steal as many vehicles as they can with the goal of posting a picture from inside of the vehicle and then moving quickly on to the next one. A 2020 Connecticut Auto Theft task force found that organized teens traveled from all major cities in the state, usually in groups of two to six people, with the intent to steal cars. The cars they traveled in were frequently verified as stolen or newly stolen but not yet reported. “They just bring the cars back,” said

Thank You North Central News Readers for voting Dr. Fignar

Sgt. Matthew Funcion, the task force spokesman. “They park them somewhere where they blend in or are well hidden and they either keep or hide the keys and then a lot of them literally run a black market vehicle rental.” Some offenders may go as far as to use the stolen car for pre-planned crimes like shootings, assaults, and drug or human trafficking. Funcion emphasized that simply locking one’s car will deter these oftenrepeat offenders, as car thieves most often look for easy targets. Critics insist Connecticut laws on car thefts are not strong enough. Currently when a suspect takes off with a stolen

car state law says police cannot chase the vehicle. In addition, teenagers who are arrested for car break-ins and thefts can have charges dismissed if they complete a diversionary program. Gov. Ned Lamont and law-enforcement officials from several cities held a videoconference last month to address the rise in juvenile crime during the pandemic because of teens having more free time (due to remote school and canceled after-school activities). Lawmakers are in the process of taking a look at break-ins and thefts this legislative session. Several bills have been introduced, including one that proposes a tougher stance on repeat offenders.

WITH TOUCHPOINTS AT HOME AND TOUCHPOINTS REHAB YOU GET COMPLETE SUCCESS When I learned I could have the same Physical Therapist at home that I had at Touchpoints at Manchester, I immediately chose Touchpoints at Home. The very next day, Kim and Piotr were at my home. The appointments were always set up based on my preference and they were always on 琀me. I have had homecare in the past, but the care and educa琀on I received from the Touchpoints team was nothing like I had ever experienced! AMAZING! Both Physical Therapists and my nurse, spent the essen琀al 琀me to provide me with comprehensive informa琀on about my surgery, helped me be琀er understand why I was feeling discomfort , especially about what is expected. Once I understood the anatomy of my surgery and the healing process, I was able to comfortably manage my discomfort and gradually increase my ac琀vity around my home. I was able to set realis琀c goals. My stress became very low and my recovery soared! The excep琀onal knowledge and skills of this Touchpoints rehab team is light years be琀er that I could have ever expected. I am now ready for Outpa琀ent Physical Therapy. I chose Touchpoints Rehab Outpa琀ent services because I will be able to con琀nue my care with the same therapists! How great is that. With Touchpoints at Home and Touchpoints Rehab you get complete success. I highly recommend Touchpoints Rehab and Touchpoints at Home at every level of care.”
