2011-2012 Gann Academy Annual Report

Page 1

S H A L O M ! Dear Gann Community, Gann Academy is a Jewish high school that is constantly growing and evolving—just like our students. Many people were instrumental in making last year both enriching and inspiring as we watched over 300 young men and women engage with the academic, personal and social joys and challenges of their high school years. We are delighted to present the 2011-2012 Annual Report. Gann continues to operate from a position of financial strength in a challenging economy. In 2011-2012 we exceeded our aggressive fundraising goal for the second year in a row. Our donors include families, grandparents, board members, alumni, alumni parents, corporations, foundations and community members. On behalf of the trustees we want to express our sincere gratitude to our donors, and to all of the many people who help to make Gann an exceptional school. We would also like to acknowledge the extraordinary contribution of outgoing Board President Elizabeth Jick. In her three-year term, Elizabeth transformed many aspects of the school and gave generously of her time, talent, and passion. One of our milestone accomplishments last year was the completion of a comprehensive strategic visioning process to identify our core strengths, opportunities and challenges. Conducted by the Board of Trustees in partnership with the leadership team, the process included input from students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, and national Jewish leaders. We have begun to implement these strategic goals that will guide our decision-making for the next 3-5 years. We want to express our deepest appreciation for your continued support and commitment to Gann. Your generosity enables us to encourage intellectual growth, nurture compassion and a sense of purpose, and propel our students to be the future leaders and citizens of our community and the world. Kol tuv (All the best),

ALUMNA TAKES GANN VALUES TO CITY YEAR

F

or Gann alumna Ayelet Pinnolis (’12), being a leader and making a difference in her community after graduation was a top priority. After watching a presentation at Gann on racism from Jonathan Cohen (’08), who was working at City Year, she realized the program had a lot to offer. The presentation stuck with her throughout high school and when the calendar turned to April 2012, applying to City Year was a natural progression for Ayelet. In June 2012, she was accepted into a 10-month City Year program prior to attending the University of Chicago in the fall of 2013.

“I think of Rabbi Baker as a role model in both education and being a strong leader,” Ayelet said. “Rabbi Baker was the first principal I ever had that knew who I was, would care about me and knew what was going on in my life.” Ayelet’s desire to be a leader in her community and to make a difference came to fruition at the Harbor Pilot Middle School in Dorchester, MA. She currently tutors 7th graders, helping them in a myriad of ways. “I know my 21 students very, very well,” she said in a phone interview. “I can give feedback to other teachers knowing what work they have, identify behavioral problems and see their strengths and weaknesses.” In addition to tutoring, assisting students with homework and supervising a newspaper club, Ayelet works on vocabulary and English fluency twice a week

with six students, with a focus on those students that need extra academic help and support. The core values and culture she received at Gann—exploring pluralism, having a dedicated work ethic, engaging in open-minded dialogue, investing time for public service and serving the community—helped prepare her for this meaningful work at City Year. Pluralism in particular resonates strongly with Pinnolis. She continues to embrace her pluralistic values at City Year by welcoming all students and peers regardless of their background. “I was taught to think about other people and be considerate of their needs,” she added. That open-mindedness stems from four years under the leadership of Rabbi Marc Baker, Head of School at Gann Academy. To honor Rabbi Baker, at a special ceremony Ayelet dedicated her red City Year jacket to him and also to the students of Harbor Pilot Middle School. “I think of Rabbi Baker as a role model in both education and being a strong leader,” Ayelet said. “Rabbi Baker was the first principal I ever had that knew who I was, would care about me and knew what was going on in my life.” It is clear Rabbi Baker’s leadership played an integral role in Pinnolis’ life as a student, and now she is providing the same to her students.

Ayelet Pinnolis ’12 started her freshman year at Gann in 2008, after attending Maimonides for middle school. At Gann she was very involved in photography, the Red Curtain Drama Club, and Kerina, the Israeli dance troupe. She was also the co-president of Open House, Gann’s Gay-Straight Alliance. Ayelet is currently dedicating a year of service before attending college by participating in City Year Boston and working with seventh grade students in Dorchester. Next year she will begin her studies at the University of Chicago. Ayelet is leaving her major and career paths wide open for exploration, but with the expectation of continued commitment to service.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHOICES

S

ending our daughter to a Jewish day school wasn’t in our plans. We expected that she would go on to our respected public high school. But at the end of eighth grade, we took a family trip to Israel. It was transforming for all of us—especially Samantha. Prior to our trip, Sammy had been ambivalent about exploring her Jewish roots, but visiting Yad Vashem with her grandmother, a holocaust survivor, gave her a new appreciation of our Jewish heritage and cultural identity. Sammy wanted to learn more. When we returned, we scheduled our first visit to Gann.

“As I left school with book in hand, all I could think was how lucky I felt that Sammy was in a place where people care so much.” Right from the start, we were impressed by the personal attention Gann promised and the small conversational classes. And Gann’s offerings were so exciting—courses, activities sports were all open to her. At Gann, Sammy plays competitive sports every season; at our large public high school, varsity spots would have been limited.

So far Gann has delivered on all that we had hoped for. Last year, Sammy had pneumonia and was out for two weeks. I went to deliver her homework and ran in to her freshman year advisor. I was surprised when he asked where Sammy had been, given that he was no longer her advisor. When I explained that Sammy was missing a book she needed, he spent the next half hour tracking it down for me. As I left school with book in hand, all I could think of was how lucky I felt that Sammy was in a place where people care so much. Gann welcomes families like ours—we’re a Reform family—and gives students a sense of security. Gann has made it possible for Sammy to explore her heritage with confidence. Although Sammy had little Hebrew study before Gann, it didn’t matter. She started at the beginning and was not alone. Education at Gann is characterized by meeting students where they are and teaching them as unique individuals.

DIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY

F

rom the moment I arrived at Gann, I felt welcomed into this community. Students from all kinds of Jewish families—from Orthodox to atheist can feel comfortable at Gann working and learning together and shaping this community. Gann embraces everyone, regardless of your beliefs, your interests, or what extracurricular activities you’re interested in.

“Gann is full of fascinating people with a wide array of opinions, interests and talents who want to work together. Collaboration, give and take, learning from each other—it’s how we accomplish those things that none of us can do on our own.” There’s so much to do here and so many ways to participate. At Gann, I’m very involved in extracurricular activities, particularly in sports and music. I’ve been doing musical activities as long as I can remember—I like to think that I don’t listen to music, but rather music listens to me. Music gives

4

shape to emotions that one can’t put in words and that’s why I love it. And I love playing and creating music with other people. I’ve learned so much from taking part in these activities—at least as much as I have in the classroom. You can’t be selfish. You have to be open. You need to figure out how to express your ideas. Gann is full of fascinating people with a wide array of opinions, interests and talents who want to work together. Collaboration, give and take, learning from each other—it’s how we accomplish those things that none of us can do on our own.

Ilan Belkind Gerson grew up in Mexico and is in his third year at Gann Academy where he is an eleventh grader. He was one of three freshmen to make the varsity soccer team—he also plays varsity tennis and his currently ranked #1 on the team. Ilan also enjoys creative writing and writes for the Artichoke — Gann’s satirical student publication. He plays guitar in House of Gann and starred as Candide in the school musical production of Candide. Ilan is also the first in his family to attend a Jewish day school. If you asked Ilan about his background, he would tell you he was raised “culturally Jewish,” but since coming to Gann his appreciation of Judaism has deepened.
