THE MISSION OF

GANN ACADEMY

is to educate, to inspire and to empower intellectually confident, passionately engaged, ethically responsible Jews who, through critical thinking and the contribution of their unique voices, will create a vibrant Jewish future and build a better world where human dignity will flourish.

DEAR FRIENDS, As Gann enters its third decade, we are proud of the school we’ve built upon the foundation of our founders’ vision: to educate, inspire and empower intellectually confident, passionately engaged and ethically responsible Jews. That vision informs everything we do. And while Gann is firmly rooted in the bedrock values of our founders, it’s our willingness to challenge ourselves to constantly do better for our students — to invent and reinvent — that makes Gann one of the most exciting high schools in the Boston area and beyond. With a bold vision for our future, Gann is in the midst of a multi-year campaign focused on 21st century teaching and learning, expanding affordability initiatives and implementing a four-year, in-depth Israel curriculum designed to prepare the future citizens and leaders of the Jewish people. You’ll see a few examples of Gann’s commitment to this vision and trailblazing efforts on the pages that follow. We thank our generous lead donors in the Campaign for Gann, and we thank you for your generosity and the countless ways you support our mission. At 20 years young, Gann looks forward to many, many more years of educating future generations of young people who will imagine and build a better world.

GANN GOES GREEN

In 2018 Gann will be powered completely by wind energy. We can thank a group of students, led by Nate Orbach ’17 and Stav Bejerano ’17, for this milestone. They did the research, solicited proposals from vendors, and convinced Gann administration that renewable energy was the way to go. Gann is a sustainability trendsetter: only 4% of U.S. schools are powered by renewable energy.

ROBOTICS QUALIFIER COMES TO GANN Gann’s robotics team hosted their first meet for 23 teams, with over 250 fellow technophiles from around the region. Gann students emceed, set up and dismantled the event, inspected robots, and staffed the help desk. All three Gann robotics teams had a stellar year, with two advancing to the state championship. Team members received a prestigious innovation award for their ability to ”think outside the box” and for their “ingenuity and inventiveness to make their designs come to life.” Many Gann robotics alums go on to work on the leading edge of science and technology.

7 WEEKS IN ISRAEL

Gann’s sophomore Israel trip, myIsrael, is unlike any other American high school’s Israel trip. Students tested water from the Sea of Galilee as part of the hydrotech course, raced handmade miniature cars at the Technion, and cleaned up forests destroyed by fires. Homestays, camping in the Negev with Israeli teens, and conversations with a 90-year-old pioneer, settlers, and Palestinians pushed our students to create a profound connection with their history and with contemporary Israelis and an appreciation of the complex challenges the country faces. myIsrael’s innovative curriculum has attracted queries from schools around the country and the world.

EXPANDED AFFORDABILITY PROGRAM

Gann Academy serves students across a wide socioeconomic spectrum, and our recently expanded affordability programs have made a Gann education accessible to an even wider range of students. This year, more than half of Gann students participate in one of our affordability programs. Gann has received acclaim throughout the independent and Jewish day school communities for our Within Reach program, which offers scaled, fixed tuition over four years to many families who would not normally qualify for financial aid. Gann approaches financial aid with creativity in order to expand access and diversity.

A WEEK OF CIVIL RIGHTS EXPLORATION

History teacher Yoni Kadden took students on a civil rights tour of the Deep South during Exploration Week, an experiential program where students delve into learning outside of the classroom. The students met with several of the era’s key activists, including the youngest of the original 13 Freedom Riders. At the site of a 1908 Alabama lynching, the teens conducted a memorial service attended by the town’s mayor. They brought stones back from the site and held another ceremony — underneath a tree on campus — to connect the trip to their lives back home. Exploration Week is a signature Gann experience — adventure combined with social justice and hands-on learning. Photo by John Phelan / CC BY-SA 3.0

In fiscal year 2017, Gann’s revenue grew well above the norms in the independent and day school communities, with 6.5% growth in operating revenue, spurred by growth in enrollment, tuition revenue, annual fundraising, and investment income. With careful cost control, expense growth was held to less than half of that. Major investments this year included the inaugural year of the myIsrael program, available to all sophomores, and the continued expansion of Gann’s Within Reach affordability program. This year, tuition covered approximately 70% of operating expenses, with the remainder primarily funded through philanthropy. Gann sustained a small operating loss, amounting to less than 1% of the budget, which was funded through Gann’s reserve funds. Gann also made capital expenditures to upgrade its HVAC system and expand its security system.

*This year, Gann sponsored both a sophomore and junior Israel trip; moving forward, only the sophomore trip will remain.
