Greater Austin Malayalee Association

Message from President

Dear Community, ONAM is in our hearts, and we celebrate no matter where we are. It never fails to fill our hearts with happiness and it never fails to bring out the child in you. So once again, let us celebrate a joyous ONAM season! Our community is participating more and more during our annual ONAM program. Each passing year will boast that it is the biggest attendance ever for our program. It has grown so much that the GAMA directors are seriously hunting for a bigger auditorium to host the event in coming years. Along with the growth, we are also facing increasing operational costs that is hard to ignore. But all these are good growing problems for GAMA, and our board is actively addressing these challenges. We want to reassure you that it will be a great event and the ONAM feast will be something that you will savour. As you know, every activity within GAMA is a volunteer activity. I sincerely request the community to send in the best talent for our stage shows and the most enthusiasts to lend a helping hand. When we get an over whelming number of entries for the stage shows, we promise to make sure the honest and fairest possible rules gets applied to select those.

We also need a lot of helping hands to manage our “ONA-Sadya, arguably the largest of such feasts in this part of the country. We need help to prepare, manage, and distribute the food to over 1000 members within a few hours. So please sign up online, reach out to your friendly neighbourhood director or just stay back at the venue, and help us as needed.

That brings to the topic of joining GAMA board as a director. Our directors are volunteers with a maximum tenure of 2 years, and half of the board retires each year getting fresh talent back in through volunteerism. That is our beautiful charter by design. So dig deep to see your passion and be a part of such a vibrant organization. You will have an absolute blast of two years and will emerge as a true leader at the end of your tenure. Just be on the lookout for an email about this or simply reach out to one of the current directors. I wish you all a very happy ONAM and a prosperous Malayalam year ahead. I am also looking forward to meeting you all in person at the event and around our wonderful city.

Vaccinations

What’s in it for YOU?

Vaccines are an important component of preventive healthcare. We now have numerous vaccines for different illnesses. This article is an attempt to introduce some of the newer vaccines and their current guidelines. My aim for this article is to provide food for thought regarding commonly available vaccines. I hope that after reading this article, the reader feels encouraged to talk to his/her primary care provider to see if any vaccines or boosters would be recommended based on his/ her health and life events. I have chosen to discuss vaccines that are required or encouraged for older children and adults. Those of us who have infants and young preschoolers in the households have numerous opportunities to acquaint ourselves with the primary vaccination series. This vaccine series is completed before the child enters kindergarten.

Tweens and Teenagers:

Menveo/Menactra: Meningococcal meningitis can be a devastating disease that peaks in adolescents and young adults aged 16 through 21. Current guidelines require all kids entering 7th grade get their first dose of the meningitis vaccine. The second dose is given after the 16th birthday. Many colleges require a meningitis booster for all students aged less than 21 years, within 5 years of enrollment. Tdap: The 12 year olds also require the Tetanus with whooping cough booster (Tdap). Varicella vaccine (chicken pox): Many of these individuals did not receive the chicken pox vaccine as a part of their primary series. They therefore need the 2 doses to catch up as per the current guidelines. Gardasil: The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the cause of 70 percent of all cervical cancers and 72 percent of anal cancers. The current HPV vaccines (Gardasil /Cervarix) target the cancer causing HPV serotypes. It is most effective among individuals who have not yet been infected with HPV. While this vaccine series can be initiated during the teenage years for boys and girls, it can be given to both men and women up to age 26.

PAGE 5

ADULTS:

Tdap: Since around 2005, the tetanus booster also contains vaccination for pertussis, ie whooping cough. Whooping cough is transmitted to young children through infected adults. Tdap is to be taken every 10 years. This is particularly important for families who have newborns or very young children. These children have not started/completed their primary series and therefore are susceptible to whooping cough. Care should be taken to vaccinate all household members, including visiting guests / family members, with the vaccine Tdap. This vaccine can be safely used for all adults including the elderly as well as pregnant women. Pneumococcal vaccines: Pneumococcal pneumonia is more common in certain populations. Individuals who have ailments like diabetes, asthma and now, all smokers, should get the pneumococcal vaccine. Seniors older than 65 have been receiving the pneumococcal vaccine, PPSV23. Since 2014 they also need another pneumococcal vaccine commonly known as PCV 13. Those who have received the PPSV23 before they turned 65, should get PCV 13 after at least one year apart.

Shingles vaccine (Zostavax): This vaccine does reduce the risk of getting shingles among persons 60 and older. It is a live vaccine; therefore there is a minimal risk of developing a mild case of shingles due to the vaccine itself. The vaccine reduces the risk of getting shingles by about 50% and also reduces the duration of pain and discomfort associated with shingles. There is also evidence of reducing the nerve pain that occasionally follows shingles.

Measles/Mumps/Rubella vaccine (MMR and MMRV): Some adults may have not received the MMR vaccine; chicken pox vaccine was also not available at that time. Chances are that we may have been exposed to siblings with these illnesses. Having these exposures often produces lifelong immunity. However, there is a possibility that we may not be immune to any or all of these illnesses. Proof of vaccination is often required for those entering health care industry, the teaching field or other public sector jobs or for immigration. Immunity to these illnesses can be easily tested by blood tests. If found to be not immune, the MMR vaccine or the Varicella vaccine can be administered. Both these are live vaccines and therefore not used during pregnancy. It is advised that women not be pregnant in the 30 days after the MMR vaccination to avoid potential complication to the fetus.

Hepatitis B: Once again, this vaccination has been routinely used only in the past few decades, so as adults, you may have not received it. Some professionals, as mentioned above, need to have proof of immunity. It is a three dose vaccination series completed over six months.

PAGE 6

Hepatitis A: This vaccine is particularly useful if you are likely to travel to South America, Mexico as well as Asia. It promotes lifelong immunity. It is a two dose vaccine series, given six months apart. So be sure to plan early. Influenza: No article on vaccination will be complete without a discussion regarding the influenza vaccine. This vaccine is recommended for all individuals 6 months or older. Annual vaccination is necessary. There are several influenza vaccines available. They can be administered intramuscularly or intranasal. The intranasal vaccine is a live vaccine, and can be given to individuals more than 2 years old. However since it is a live vaccine, it is not recommended to those with asthma, diabetes, heart disease, strokes, pregnant women or those with liver or kidney ailments. It should not also be used in household members who may come in contact with other family members who require protected environment like those undergoing chemotherapy, or organ transplant recipients. The live vaccine is therefore not preferred for individuals working in the health care industry. The flu shot should be taken in August or September when it first becomes available. It takes about 3 weeks to develop immunity following the vaccine therefore it is better to take it earlier so as to be well prepared during the flu season in winter. Seniors, above 65, should receive the high dose flu shot that promotes a better immune response. Visitors visiting the US during the flu season should consider getting the flu shot to protect them. Those who are allergic to eggs should not get the vaccine. Your healthcare provider will ask you about other allergies as well.

Other vaccines: With overseas travel for business or pleasure becoming more common than ever, I would like to remind individuals to look into the current guidelines for vaccinations to the destination country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC) has an interactive website that provides up-to-date health information for travelers to different parts of the world. Some vaccinations require a specific time period prior to travel to be the most beneficial. So, be sure check early and plan accordingly. It is beyond the scope of this article to include all the available vaccines, their risks, benefits and contraindications. There will be certain specific populations that require certain vaccinations. Insurance coverage may also vary depending on the specific vaccines or indications or age for use and of course the insurance deductibles. I would encourage you to discuss your vaccinations with your healthcare provider at your next visit. I hope that the information in this article helps you make informed decisions bringing you a step closer to a healthier YOU.

Spring Fest Austin received about 18 inches of rain in May. It set a record for the wettest May in the history of Austin, thus erasing a 120-year-old record by 5 inches. It also elevated May of 2015 to be the third wettest month on record ever. GAMA was up against the unpredictable rain gods to do an encore of our annual picnic event. As you all know, at our annual SpringFest event at San Gabriel’s park has become a tradition for us. With the park availability limited to just one weekend in June, we absolutely had no fall back option should the event gets washed out. This also pushed the event into the summer heat as well as into the community’s “India vacation season”. We are living in a rapidly growing community. The SpringFest gives the best opportunity to make new friendships and helps the newbies in town to ease into the wonderful organization of GAMA. Our wonderful community once again came out in large numbers to push the attendance to yet another all-time high. Food makes or breaks picnic event. We never had any issues, and this year is no exception. Did you know that almost all of the picnic food is “homemade” and prepared by volunteers? The night before the event, many of us enthusiastically joined at Dijoy Divakaran’s house to marinate the meet and dice vegetables. By late night, this team had prepared many trays of ready to cook food for the attendees. At the picnic, our grill masters Jeffy and Jamie mentored newbies at the art of grilling. Vegetarians savoured Pave Bhaji and veggie burgers. We saw animated and enthusiastic groups savouring the delicious food and talking away almost everything under the sun. Picnic is never fun without games and challenges. Our games are fun, bordering silly at times, but are always an instant hit. This year, we added “Uri Adi” to the list of games. For this skill-based game, you have to work hard not just to win but also to keep your dignity while winning. We also had the usual sack race, lemon and spoon race and musical chair. Did you know that we also have our annual soccer match in springtime? Two teams from our community valiantly fought for our annual rolling trophy. But how can we have a winner among equals? They team ended up at a draw, but since practicing hard for the next year’s encore. Kids had fun picking candy, bounced off in an inflatable, had face painted colourfully and lined up for balloon twisting. We also got interesting recipes for the “Seasoned and Young Chef” contest. We topped off the games with loud cheering for the gender based tug-of-war, and ended with group “Anthakhshari” Jesu Joseph, our DJ, gave us a real party atmosphere, where food and fun took the centre stage of community camaraderie. Let us give a huge “thank you” to all our volunteers who made this event wonderful. SpringFest is the most casual fun we ever can have. Come on and enjoy it year after year.

Tax Update 2015

We are just another 4 months away from the next tax season and here are some of the tax changes for the year 2015 Given the low inflation environment over the last year, the 2015 IRS Tax Brackets, standard deductions and personal exemptions have only seen a moderate increase over 2014 levels. Federal income tax brackets and related tax items, under the tax code, provide for mandatory annual adjustments based on inflation.

Based on the IRS official release here are some of the other key 2015 tax changes: Marginal tax rates will remain the same as last year with 39.6% being the highest marginal tax rate. But since tax brackets ranges will increase, people with no income increases will actually see a lower marginal tax rate The standard deduction increased by $100 again in 2015 for single filers and married people filing separate returns. For married filers filing joint returns the standard deduction increase was $200 and for heads of household the increase was $150. The personal exemption rose by another $50 in 2015 to $4,000. However, the exemption is subject to a phase-out (per law enacted earlier this year) that begins with AGI of $258,250 ($309,900 for married couples filing jointly). It phases out completely at $380,750 ($432,400 for married couples filing jointly).

The Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) exemption amount for single filers rose to $53,600 vs $52,800 in 2014. It will be $83,400, for married couples filing jointly vs $82,100 in 2014 The maximum Earned Income Credit (EIC) amount rises to $6,242 for taxpayers filing jointly who have 3 or more qualifying children, up from a total of $6,143 from the last tax year The gift tax exclusion will remain at $14,000 Flexible spending arrangements (FSA) employee contribution limits will rise by $50 to $2,550 as mandated in the new Affordable Care Act. If you have a balance in your FSA at the end of 2014 and you carry over $500 of it into 2015, you will be ineligible to participate in an HSA in 2015. This restriction does not apply to FSAs for specific uses, such as dependent care or dental expenses. Based on this new restriction, you should plan ahead and balance the benefit of each option. If you want to set up an HSA for 2016, it may actually be better not to carry forward those unused FSA amounts, even if it means that you will lose them. Foreign earned income exclusion broke the six figure mark for the first time and rose by $1,600 to $100,800

Employer Sponsored 401(k) and 403(b) Plans 2015 401(k) contribution limits, which also applies to 403b, 457 plans, and the federal government’s Thrift Savings Plan, rose by $500 from 2014 standard contribution limits. This is a result of final inflation figures per the latest cost of living adjustment (COLA) figures. Catch-up contributions for those over 50 rose by the same amount. In addition to the limit on elective deferrals shown in the table below, annual employer and employee contributions to all of your retirement accounts may not exceed the lesser of 100% of your compensation or $53,000 for 2015 vs. $52,000 in 2014.

Limitation on IRA Rollovers Beginning on Jan.1, 2015, investors are limited to one rollover from one IRA to another in any 12-month period. A second IRA-to-IRA rollover in a single year could result in income tax becoming due on the rollover, a 10% early withdrawal penalty, and a 6% per year excess contributions tax, as long as that rollover remains in the IRA.
