Never a dull moment when you have six siblings Priya and Elvis Kottooran are the perfect example for Pro life Nikhil Wilson

T

he world as we know it is constantly changing. While there are families who believe in having only one or two children, there are also families who believe that it is their duty to gracefully raise as many children they have. Priya and Elvis Kottooran are a perfect example of one such family. “We have seven children in heaven guiding our seven children here on Earth,” says Elvis, a proud father of seven children. It is astonishing how they manage to look after seven kids, while most mothers say “having two children and handling them is more than enough!”. The secret to

Various Sources

taking care of all the seven children lies in the age difference between the siblings. The eldest one Elriya had a little bit of experience when Joanna, the second child was born after two years. When the third child, Chris was born, Elriya and Joanna had some experience looking after Chris and similar experiences came into play for the following children. As the numbers grew, the older ones were ready and experienced to look after the young ones even if the parents were not at home. Maybe that's the reason the parents never seemed to be worried about leaving young Isabelle, who is just two years old, with her siblings.

It is always a pleasant scene to watch when the family gets together. And for a place which has seven kids, their home looks absolutely clean and cozy. While there are many things that worry parents about their children, like education, and finances; these kids have been given one of the best educational facilities. Home schooling has been playing a major role in building the future generations. This method enables children to invest more time into arts and sports and not just academics. While other couples try hard just to maintain their marriage Priya and Elvis are a perfect role model for those looking for inspiration.

Portrait of a Self-taught Artist Nila Stacy Jones is a budding artist with a sophisticated vision Shibul Pavithran

I

t takes a lot of creativity to turn a white canvas into an inspired work of art. At an age when most kids are busy watching cartoons on TV or playing mobile games on their parent’s phone, there are some who choose a different path. Meet Nila Stacy Jones, an artist who ventured into art before she could learn to write a word. At just the age of eight, she is a master of her pursuit, with many solo exhibitions to her name and has collaborated with big names from the arena. She mostly uses acrylic and oil pastels on canvas and creates beautiful paintings which can make anyone ponder for a while. A gifted natural artist with intricate compositions and surreal

10

Vishnu Thilak

abstractness, she appears to be on the path to greatness already. Have you received any formal training in painting? Not actually, let me put it this way. At the age of three, I took part in a protest called ‘Theruvarangu’ which means ‘The street’ in Malayalam. Organised by Bob Marley Collective, it was held in Kochi where people from everywhere came and painted as part of their contribution. Someone from the organisers came and gave me three painting colours and asked me to give it a try. So I mixed the colours and painted some area of the canvas. An artist from Kochi named Desmond Rebeiro saw the

paintings and called for my parents. He told them to take me to his art studio’. So that’s the first time I entered a place full of colours. And he advised my parents to avoid giving me any formal training in art. He is someone who says that colours should not be defined; anything can be of any hue - a tree can be black and the sun can be blue. What matters is what the artist wants to convey and what mood she wants to show. What is your inspiration to paint? Travelling is a major influence on my work. My family travels a lot so I am fortunate that way. My paintings - Dandelions, Lotus Pond and Black Forest were all inspired

WtzupCity.com/COVERSTORY

by travels. In my third exhibition, I did a live painting and that was appreciated internationally. What are the subjects that you like to cover? I like to depict nature in all my paintings such as fish, snowman, summer, farming, animals, and birds. My paintings like Scary Joker and Mouth Shut Army Man were inspired by real life experiences. How was your experience of being showcased by Lalit Kala Academy, considering you were the youngest to be featured by them? It was good, I got to learn about the

professional painting scenario in Kerala. Famous artists like Raghavan Atholi and Ajit Kumar gave me good feedback, which really gave me the motivation to work better. I also developed a lot of confidence to exhibit my paintings. How do your parents contribute in your journey of being an artist? Firstly, they help me in remembering photographs so that I can draw them. They don’t interfere with my work; they let me do my own thing, unlike most of the kids nowadays, whose future is decided by their parents. That is the reason I guess, my parents chose an alternative education for me. They could have spent a lot of money on advertisements, websites and media; but that would never be natural. As parents, they gave me absolute freedom to choose my path. What is your message to young kids who aspire to become an artist like you?

I have many friends of my age and I spend ample time with them. Once, when they were going for an art competition, I told them, ‘you don’t have to compete when you do art’, as I believe more in creation than competition. Artists are not meant for competitions; they just express their creativity and there should be freedom in doing so. Do you think there is ample exposure in Kerala considering the field of art? No, I don’t think so. There are a lot of people who buy my paintings but a lot of it is because there’s been a hype in the media regarding me being one ofthe youngest artists from Kochi. In Lalit Kala Academy, I am not eligible for any of their awards and grants. And there are many reasons for that - I don’t have a formal education - they state that if a kid has to be a part of Lalit kala Academy then they have to get a certificate of assurance by the principal of their particular institution they are enrolled into, so I cannot do that. And an artist has to be above 18 years of age to be able to get any grant or award by Lalit Kala Academy. But it is different in international art platforms. I sent my application to the 2018 ‘Luxembourg Art Prize’, and have been selected and will be participating for it. They have assured to bear my entire expense and have promised to give me a grant, so that I can continue my work.

cialised in Film Studies. I just completed my research on Christopher Nolan’s films. I have directed three documentaries. By profession, I am a teacher and by passion, a filmmaker. Teaching in college has given me a space to understand fresh thoughts, innovative and revolutionary ideals from the students whom I teach. My perspectives become more contemporary with the books I read. As I teach films, I can actually combine my passion in films with my teaching. I usually shoot on Saturdays and Sundays and during vacations. I manage my shooting without affecting my classes. I struggle to make films since I am not a full time filmmaker but I am happy to struggle”, says Rajesh, talking about his passion and career. He comments that his filmmaking attempts have really helped him in his teaching techniques. “I am a little lucky since my passion and profession complement each other. I would say that we cannot ignore

our passion because that may affect our profession too,” says Rajesh. When asked about how he manages his filmmaking process and his teaching profession, Rajesh says, “The college supports me within their limitation. I have not asked any duty leave for my filmmaking; only used my government permitted leaves to shoot the film. My principal and colleagues support me; more importantly, it’s the encouragement of the students I value more. They also understand my passion for filmmaking. It’s a tough affair, but I’m ready to undertake all sacrifices for my passion”. Rajesh says, “We should respect our passion and that is something that makes us genuine. It is our passion that differentiates us from the others and it's our passion that gives us our real identity. If we can combine both passion and profession it would be nice, if not, find some extra time to invest in your passion. That will never be a waste of time.”
