ex Vijayan is back on a roll with his newest compositions in the upcoming film Parava, which is also the directorial debut of actor Soubin Shahir. He talks about his inspiration for the music of the film and his evolution as a musician. He also shares his experiences of having worked with Dulquer Salmaan and directors like Anwar Rasheed, Ashiq Abu, and Sameer Thahir. The song Pyaar..Pyaar is trending now all over social media. How was it composed? Soubin Shahir briefed me about the song situation. He had asked me to compose a love song which has a lot of innocence. It’s a school love sequence, happening on Sports Day. I had heard a young kid’s rendition of Ho Gaya Hai Tujhko To Pyar Sajna…[From Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge], I made changes to the tempo and sent it to the director. He was very happy with it. The song was first titled ‘Nenjil Nenjil’ but as there are a lot of songs already with the same, I thought of changing it. Also, as Soubin is fond of children’s voice, we used them for this song. Dulquer has sung a song in Parava. He has usually sung fast numbers so far. The song Ormakal is a melodious one. How did he come about doing it? How was your experience with him? Dulquer sang that song very well. It did not take more than 2hours to complete that song. He sang very professionally. I never felt that it was an actor who was singing the song. However, he was not satisfied with his singing. He kept on correcting

his mistakes. But I got more than what I expected. The song is mainly about friendship. He is a very down to earth person and really friendly, so it was very easy working with him. The movies which you have done so far had an urban touch. Parava is a film based in Fort Kochi. Was this a challenge for you? For me, each and every movie I commit to is challenging. But Parava was more trying. It is unique in its concept. The story revolves around pigeons and so I had to incorporate their actual chirping and twittering through sync-sound, which was the difficult part. The movie has three songs. Apart from Pyaar pyaar and Ormakal, the third song is a fast number. Ormakal has another version as well in the background music. Looking at your career, there is a lot of gap between the films you have done. Why is it so? Frankly speaking, I am not getting many offers. I am satisfied with what I’m getting and I am always happy with the work I do. I don’t want to handle too many projects together as I am interested in doing only one project at a time. You have composed music for some of the most important movies in the careers of people such as Anwar Rasheed (Bridge from Kerala Café), Ashiq Abu (22
Female Kottayam), and Sameer Thahir (Chaappa Kurishu and Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi). What do you have to say about that? (Laughing) It is just the opposite. These were movies that in fact gave me a break in my career! It was very comfortable working with them. Be it Aashiq, Anwar or Sameer, our taste in music is the same, which made things easier. Most of your tracks have been sung by new comers. Is there any particular reason that you choose them over other established singers? It’s our instinct to always reach out first to our friends. That’s the same principle I have followed here as well. I try to get my tracks sung by my friends. Also, I have always given full freedom to my directors to choose the singers. Which musician’s style and composition would you say has influenced you? I admire Johnson mashu. He used to do all genres. His music compositions are magical. Since I am a guitarist, I know a lot of guitarists. Van Halen is my favourite band. What do you think about the current scenario for independent musicians in this era? I think there is a lot of scope for independent musicians. The audience is now
receptive to different music genres. Now there are a lot opportunities, thanks to various social media and stage shows. The movie industry has also now opened up to independent musicians. Your first hit from Avial as a band was in 2008, and it has been a long while since your fans have had another album from the band. Can we expect something in the near future? We have been composing on and off but nothing’s been really productive. But right now we have fixed a deadline and should be able to come out with something by 2018. Could you please tell us about your upcoming projects? Right now, I’m working on Ashiq’s new movie titled Mayanadhi. Can you tell us about other contemporary musicians that you like? Sushin Shyam (Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi), Neha Nair and Yakzan Gary Pereira (Iyobinte Pusthakam), Job Kurien, are a few names I admire. I really like Bijibal's BGM, especially from the film Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum.

s Kerala gets immersed in yet another Onam filled with festivities, flowers, and food, the traditional Onam chandas can be seen sprouting all across the city acting as the one stop shopping destination for all things related with the festival. As the state readies for the arrival of the beloved Mahabali thampuran and usher in the start of the harvest season, the Onam chanda provides the right venue for bringing together various aspects of the festival under one roof. The Onam chandas can be found across the state of Kerala as the ten days of Onam draw closer, with it now becoming almost a customary event across most cities. It

contains sellers from various parts of the country coming together with very specific wares that are tailored to the wants of the people during the harvest festival. These include various items such as Onathapans and Vellaku, which act as decorations in houses and pookalams. Along with amazing collections of Kerala sarees and set mundu to be worn in celebration of the festival and perhaps most importantly the Onam special snacks such as sharkaravarti and banana chips can be found here and of course, the quintessesntial paayasams. We spoke with a few of the vendors to see how things were faring in this year’s Onam
chandas. “The sales are good, Kalamkari sarees are in trend right now and they are moving like hot cakes,” said Krishnakumar, a vendor who specialises in handloom sarees. Shivakumar, a food vendor who has come all the way from Punjab here just for the Onam chandha this year, said, “Punjabi mango pickle is our fastest moving product, many people are also interested in the dates pickle.”

or her, it was a matter of luck falling into her lap; while for him, it was the realisation of a dream. Actors Reba John and Arun Kurian found their way to stardom in the Malayalam film industry with a bit of hard work and a bit of goodwill from kind hearted souls. Reba first acted in the film Jacobinte Swargarajyam, directed by Vineeth
Sreenivasan. She played the role of the love interest of the lead actor Nivin Pauly in the film. Arun made his debut in the film Aanandam, which also saw a host of other new faces. It is produced by Vineeth Sreenivasan and directed by Ganesh Raj. It is also a film that brought about a trend of doing films with fresh faces in Malayalam
cinema. Both Jacobinte Swargarajyam and Aanandam completed 100 days of successful run at the theatres. While Reba talks about her upcoming work Paippinchuvattile Pranayam, Arun talks about his experience with the new release Velipadinte Pusthakam. The two actors open their hearts out about their unexpected journeys in Malayalam films, their

phase as newcomers, and the changes that come with fame. How did you enter the Malayalam film industry and how was the experience? Reba: I used to participate in a lot of extra-curricular activities in school and college, and have won a lot of prizes. It was my uncle who came to know about the TV show Midukki, and suggested that I participate in it. It was a really helpful experience for me as I was the second runner up at the end of the show. It served as a platform for me to get noticed and I received many offers after this, but I was unable to accept any as I had to complete my studies. After some time, I did a few advertisements such as Dhatri Dheedhe Hair Oil. The casting director of this ad was the same for the film Jacobinte Swargarajyam. He told me about the story and asked if I was interested. As it was a stellar team of Vineeth and Nivin, I was definitely interested and signed the project. That’s how my entry into filmdom happened, quite unexpectedly.

Acting in this film was a great experience and a fabulous launch for a newcomer like me. Arun: After completing my graduation, I joined Whistling Woods College in Mumbai to do MBA in Media as I was interested in cinema. From there, I went on to assist Vishnu, son of director Shyamaprasad in advertisements. Around the same time, I sent my portfolio for auditions for movies but didn’t get any response. Later, my relative Joseph told me about a film by Ganesh and Anand C Chandran. I knew Anand beforehand, so asked him if I could assist him in the film in any way. But he said that they were looking for actors. That’s when I got the opportunity to send my profile to them and I bagged the role in the movie Aanandam in my third audition. It was a really good experience as majority of the cast was freshers. We shared a great camaraderie and have maintained our friendship even till this date. I am really grateful to Anandettan and Ganeshettan, who reposed their confidence in me that I could do it.
Arun, tell us about your experience in Velipadinte Pusthakam. Once, during a casual conversation with Anil Abraham, the associate director of Aanandam, he told me about his next project, which was with Lal Jose and Mohanlal. It was the first time that the director and the actor were coming together for a film, and I wished if I could be a part of it. The same day, Vinod Shornur, who is Lal Jose sir’s friend and co-producer of Aanandam, called me and gave me the news that Lal Jose wanted to cast me in this film. It was a manasil laddoo potti moment for me! I play the character of Sameer, who is a brash urban youth. Working with Lal Jose sir was like entering an acting university, as I got to learn a tremendous amount from him. It was a shoot that lasted 70 days, so I was able to learn a lot from the several experienced actors that were there in this film. In terms of appearance, there is a major change as well, as in Aanandam, I was clean shaven; whereas in Velipadinte Pus-

thakam, I get to sport a beard. Also, I was asked to gain weight for the latter. How was your experience with Mohanlal? It was like a dream come true for me! My brother, Reuben is a huge Lalettan fan and I grew up watching his films. That’s when the desire to act in movies arose in me. On the last day of the shoot, I approached Lalettan and related this story to him. In response, he hugged me tightly and blessed me in his inimitable, characteristic style. Reba, tell us about your upcoming film, Paippinchuvattile Pranayam. My next film is Paippinchuvattile Pranayam, in which Neeraj Madhav plays a lead role for the first time. The story is based on the lives of a few families in the island of Thanthonni Thuruthu, an island in Kochi. It is a romantic comedy that gives a socially relevant message. I play the role of a girl called Tina, who grows up in a traditional way in the island. The film is the directorial debut of Domin D’Silva. It is a completely new crew and it
was a fun experience with them. This is an exciting time for Malayalam cinema which is seeing a lot of newcomers. How do you see the competition? Reba: It is a great time for Malayalam film industry indeed, as it is opening up to so many new kids on the block. The competitiveness is definitely there, but it is a spirit of healthy competition. Ultimately, it is one’s hard work that pays and determines your future in the industry. I am looking forward to an opportunity in which I shall be able to exhibit my potential in greater depth. Arun: The flooding of newcomers in the Malayalam film industry is definitely a good thing because it gives the directors a large pool of talent to choose from. Each of the newcomers has a unique style of their own, so it doesn’t come across as a competition for me. If not acting, what career would you have chosen? Reba: I do not have any film background. I
always wanted to maintain my academics. I love teaching and if I wouldn’t be an actor, then I would definitely have been a teacher. Arun: I graduated in B.Com and went on to complete my MBA. If I hadn’t entered the film industry, then I would have definitely taken up a conventional job in the corporate field. What’s the best compliment you have received? Reba: I receive a lot of kind words of encouragement on Instagram and Facebook, mostly from young people, asking me to act more in films. Arun: Lal Jose sir told me that he quite liked my performance in Aanandam, and that I have a screen presence. He also advised that if I feel that there are any areas where I think I need improvement, I should start working towards it now. Coming from Lal sir, it is a huge compliment for me. After Aanandam came out, I got a call from a man from Kottayam. He told me that he

identified himself with my character Varun in the film. He was very emotional as he spoke and that rubbed off on me. It was a very moving moment. Tell us about a crazy fan moment you have had. Reba: Being outside Kerala, I didn’t expect to be known among the public even after doing my first film. But because the film was a success, I became famous in my college, and there were times when my juniors lined up to take selfies with me. It was quite overwhelming. Arun: As part of movie promotions, I have
visited many colleges around Kerala, and the adulation I have received is tremendous. This kind of response is quite amazing and a new experience for meW. Also, I constantly receive messages on my social media pages, which makes me really happy. What come to your mind when you think of Onam? Reba: As my family is based in Bangalore, Onam celebrations are a huge thing out there. Certainly, the best part of the day that I look forward to is the Onam sadhya. My mom makes the sadhya really well, so I love it and look forward to it each year. Last year’s Onam was unforgettable, as after the
success of Jacobinte Swargarajyam, I was invited as a guest to the Onam celebrations of the Malayali Association in Chicago. Arun: Onam has always been a time of movie extravaganza for me – as I would look forward to the new releases in theatres, and even TV channels would be overflowing with new films. Apart from that, it is the Onam sadhya that is the best part of the day. However, this year’s Onam is the most special till now as my film Velipadinte Pusthakam, with my favourites Lalettan and Lal Jose sir, is releasing.

e Malayalis have a million reasons to anticipate the onset of and hail the harvest festival of Onam, ranging from the pride of being a part of our rich tradition and culture, to the umpteen offers and discount sales, family get-togethers, celebrations in school/college or offices - it does give us a reason to dress up and regale in gala mode. Since Onakkodi itself is an integral part of this festival, shopping during Onam is comprises a crucial aspect of the celebrations. Thus, no doubt, the fun and challenging part would be to put together that special look, making sure at the same time to stand out. The kasavu sari has the magical ability to make every woman look like a diva. Perhaps, it is the combination of white and gold (adding the Midas touch to an otherwise subtle shade). Its origins can be traced to the early third century Shramanas who wore a handwoven cotton fabric that was yellowish and off-white. The addition of the gold border was probably due to the influence of the Graeco-Roman ‘Palla’. This paved the way for the ‘Mundum Neriyathu’ or the present day Kasavu saree. It’s no surprise that people of every region tend to dress up in clothing with colours that are in contrast with the landscape of the region and suits the climate as well. The fabric in discussion checks both these boxes as well. So how do we make the good old Kasavu saree more interesting? Here are some of the trends that are heating up Onam fashion this year.

Intricate thread work Thread-work or embroidery adds to the charm of the nine yard garment. Lately, mirror work is finding its place on this garment too
Boisterous blouse The easiest way to make a statement would be to get trendy with the blouse! There are endless possibilities with mixing and matching colours, fabrics, patterns, etc. Kalamkari, Zari, Silk, Velvet, Brocade, Denim ‌just to name a few! Sleeves arm length, elbow-length, puffed - or no sleeves, whatever the style, it just enhances the beauty of the apparel! Even off-shoulders and cold-shoulders are finding their way in. Or if you are the ultra-chic girl who wants to give a modern twist to this traditional attire, team it up with a crop top or even a shirt! Matching accessories (or even mismatching ones!) will complete your look. Of late, Kasavu saree has been a source of inspiration for several other forms of clothing. The amalgamation of the northern and southern parts of India can be seen in lehengas and salwar kameezes stitched in golden-white. The same can be seen in dresses, skirts, and tops. Yes, the set saree is evolving!

Thripunithura Athachamayam: A Cultural Extravaganza
Take a look at what makes the Thripunithura Athachamayam so special and how it captures the essence of Onam George S Manavalan
E
very year, the streets of Thripunithura transform into a riot of colours and activity, as it marks the beginning of the festive season. The Thripunithura Athachamayam ushers the harvest festival of Onam in Kerala. While Thripunithura is usually just a quiet town nearly 7km away from the main city of Kochi; come the start of the ten day festival, it transforms into the cultural hub of the state with the Athachamayam celebrations. The event takes place around August/ September depending on the first day of Onam - ‘Atham’ which changes with accordance to the Malayalam calendar. The Thripunithura Athachamayam is meant to commemorate the great victory of the raja

of Kochi and the event is said to be held so that the royal family could better greet their subjects back in the day. The parade consists of the ‘Thampuran’ travelling all the way from his seat of power in Hill Palace to Vamanamoorthy temple, situated in Thrikkakara, about 12km away from Tripunithura. This is where he offers a special prayer to the gods as part of tradition before returning back home. The main attraction is the Onam parade consisting of various famous folk-based participants with their own dance styles such as folk art forms like Theyyam, Kathakalli, and Pulikalli. Floats depicting the scenes from the epics Mahabharatha and Ramayana are also displayed in the parade. The displays add a sense of awe to
the event and help keep alive the folktales of the past. The event begins with the hoisting of the Atham flag by a member of the royal family after which the parade begins, lead by Mahabali Thampuran himself. The representatives of all communities are welcomed to join in with the Athachamayam leading to an event filled with cultural diversity. Thripunithura has always been considered as a cultural hub, with music, dance and various other forms of art been given great importance since the time of the first Kochi Maharajas and the Thripunithura Athachamayam acts as the main stage to display this love for culture.
