THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT… THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES 1 This is the final part of a trilogy based on JRR Tolkien’s Hobbit book. Originally, it was intended to be a two-parter. 2 The story takes its content not from an actual story, but from appendices in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. 3 The film made use of footage shot but not used in the first two Hobbit films, with some new scenes shot to make it whole. 4 Originally called There and Back Again, the title was changed to The Battle of the Five Armies quite late in the day – in April this year. 5 The five armies are: the Goblins and Wargs of Moria, the Men of the Long Lake, the Elves of Mirkwood, the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain and the great Eagles of the Misty Mountains. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is released on 12 December Watch the trailer

Stiller reboots the power of life over death In the third of the museumat-midnight adventures, Ben Stiller’s Larry Daley is on a quest to staunch the flow of the waning magical powers of The Tablet of Ahkmenrah, which animate his night-time friends. In his globe-trotting race against time, he gets up close and personal with re-animated relics in the British Museum, including Ben Kingsley’s pharaoh. The film also stars Robin Williams in one of his last roles. Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan and Ricky Gervais also make appearances. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb will be in cinemas 19 December.

UNBROKEN

Angelina Jolie’s wartime drama is a tale of grit and a refusal to surrender ing dong, Oscar calling! Unbroken tells the story of war hero and Olympic runner Louis ‘Louie’ Zamperini’s experiences during WWII, and it has all the ingredients to bring home gongs during awards season. After surviving a plane crash, which led to 47 days adrift on a raft in the Pacific, Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) is captured by the Japanese and interned in a POW camp for two and a half years. There he is subjected to cruel treatment that breaks his body, but not his mind or spirit, hence the film’s title. It’s an illustration of human determination to survive under intolerable conditions. On making the movie, director Jolie said, “Telling his story is a giant responsibility.” Watch the trailer, it’s goose bump inducing. In cinemas 26 December.

EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS

Adventure, danger and CGI bring this classic tale to life…

B

iblical stories make great material for lavish cinematic action-adventures and Ridley Scott’s retelling of Moses’ rescue of 600,000 Israelite slaves (we don’t think they had that many extras) from Egypt is no exception. Shot on location in Spain, this film is a

visual feast of high action and great drama thanks to a stellar cast, headed up by Christian Bale (The Dark Knight Trilogy), Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Zero Dark Thirty) and the always brilliant Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3, Gandhi). Not only is it a tale of altruism, danger and heroism, but there’s

“I am Moses!” Bale ditches the cowl and cape for a beard and sandals

a soap-style undercurrent of sibling conflict between Pharaoh Ramses (Edgerton) and his adopted brother, Moses (Bale). All in all, this film promises to be a proper epic in every sense. Perfect when you’re full of turkey. See Exodus: Gods & Kings in cinemas 26 December.

known mostly for their comedic roles, but this film looks set to turn all of that on its head, while simultaneously redefining their careers.

Both put in hugely captivating turns in Foxcatcher, a drama about a sibling of the millionaire du Pont family (Carell) and two Olympic wrestling brothers. John du Pont takes in and trains Mark and David Schultz (Tatum and Mark Ruffalo, respectively),

a pair of wrestlers hoping to win big at the upcoming Olympics. But it all unravels, ending in the untimely demise of one of them. But why? All three actors put in performances that will likely get them nods come awards season. You can find out why from 9 January.

Eddie Redmayne does a star turn as Stephen Hawking

You've never seen the Ninja Turtles like this before!

ANNIE IS BACK!

Watch the trailer

It was only a matter or time before this 1982 musical was remade for the big screen. This version of Annie is not exactly the same story as the original, but it has that feel-good familiarity. Adorable little Annie (Quvenzhané Wallis), left as a baby to a foster home run by an overly mean woman (Cameron Diaz), strikes up an unlikely friendship with billionaire business tycoon and mayoral candidate Benjamin Stacks (Jamie Foxx). Will things run smoothly for the pair? Probably not. Find out 26 December.

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING A film about the life of the most clever man on Earth f ever a man deserved a film being made about him, it’s

super-brain scientist himself, Professor Stephen GET SANTA I the Hawking. Tracking from the very beginning, through his

early days at the University of Cambridge, and his life-changing motor neuron disease, The Theory of Everything looks set to be an emotional roller coaster. Focusing primarily on the relationship between Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his girlfriend/wife Jane, played by Felicity Jones, this will pull on your heartstrings from beginning to end. The trailer alone had us reaching for the tissues, so be prepared to feel drained by the time it’s all over. Redmayne, incidentally, is being tipped in some corners to take home a gong or two come award time for his performance for this, so judge for yourself from 1 January.

ou’ve got to feel sorry for some people, and Liam Neeson’s ex-government operative Bryan Mills is one of them – he seems to suffer terrible luck! And in Taken 3, it’s not third time lucky. He is falsely accused of a murder that is very close to home, and finds himself pursued by a savvy police inspector while he tries to track down the real killer. Thankfully, Mills has a ‘particular set of skills’, which you might be familiar with, that he can employ to hand out his unique brand of vigilante justice. Joining Neeson this time around are Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) and Famke Janssen (X-Men), with Maggie Grace (The Twilight Saga) returning as Neeson’s daughter – famously taken in the first outing. You can see who suffers at the hands of Mills when Tak3n hits cinemas from 8 January. What a pleasant way to begin the new year!

THE POLITE PERUVIAN BEAR Everyone’s favourite bear, Paddington, is back and tipped to be the biggest hit this Christmas

L

ondon is a very long way from the jungles of Peru, and city life is not quite how this young bear, with a passion for all things British, imagined it would be… Created by Michael Bond, Paddington lovingly bumbled his way through a slew of muchadored books and a late-’70s TV series, and into the hearts of a generation of children. This family comedy promises to win the cuddly, accident-prone bear a legion of new fans. The Mighty Boosh director Paul King helms this project, and he wrote the screenplay too. When an earthquake destroys his jungle home, Paddington’s Aunt Lucy smuggles the wideeyed bear on a boat bound for England in search of a better life. 14 ODEON.CO.UK

Sporting the obligatory blue duffle coat and red floppy hat, the marmalade-loving mammal, voiced by Skyfall’s Ben Whishaw, emerges from a sack at Paddington station, blinking and clutching his tiny, battered suitcase. Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) and Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville are Mr & Mrs Brown, the kindly couple who read the label around Paddington’s neck (‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’) and offer him a temporary home. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist, and it all takes a sour turn.

“HE HAS A STRONG SENSE OF RIGHT AND WRONG AND DOESN’T TAKE KINDLY TO BUREAUCRACY” The aforementioned villain, Millicent Clyde, is brought to life by Nicole Kidman. Described as ‘cold-hearted yet elegant and seductive’, she has carried a grudge against talking bears ever since they ruined the reputation, and fortune, of her father. Kidman, who learned to throw knives for the film, says she loved the books as a child. “My agent called and said: ‘We’ve got this offer from London for you to be in a film about a Paddington bear.’ And I said: ‘You mean the Paddington bear?’ I read the stories when I 16 ODEON.CO.UK

was little and I grew up with Paddington. I know all about his adventures and what mischief he got up to.” UTTERLY BRITISH Creator Michael Bond, who was working as a BBC cameraman when he came up with the idea of Paddington in 1956, thinks people love the bear because they admire his character: “He has a strong sense of right and wrong and doesn’t take kindly to the red-tape bureaucracy of the sillier rules and regulations with which we humans surround ourselves.”

Bond was inspired to write the books after noticing a bear on the shelf of a store near Paddington station (a bear that he bought as a present for his wife) and seeing old newsreels of child evacuees leaving London during the war with labels around their necks and their possessions in small suitcases. The all-star cast captured the British flavour as it also includes Jim Broadbent as antique shop owner Mr Gruber, Julie Walters as Mrs Bird the housekeeper, and the exciting new Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi, as the Browns’ neighbour Mr Curry.

IF AT FIRTH YOU DON’T SUCCEED... Nicole Kidman was delighted to take part as she’s loved Paddington since childhood

Is that a toilet seat around his neck? Well of course it is!

Paddington has long dreamed of coming to Britain, and now he has properly arrived

COMIC CHAOS What can you expect? Plenty of laughs for a start, like when Paddington wreaks havoc in the Browns’ bathroom. The bumbling bear cleans his ears with a toothbrush, swigs a whole bottle of mouthwash, plunges his face in the urinal to cool his burning mouth and then sails down the stairs in a bath

after taking the toilet off the wall. Producer David Heyman, who also brought us Harry Potter and Gravity, is confident that he’s got a hit on his hands. “Paddington is a universally loved character,” he says, “treasured for his optimism, his sense of fair play, and his perfect manners – and, of course, for his unintentional talent for comic chaos.” Bravo.

Colin Firth was originally cast as the voice of Paddington but he announced his ‘conscious uncoupling’ from the film in June because he couldn’t find the right vocal tone for the character. Producer David Heyman admits: “Colin was brilliant, but his voice was, ultimately, too mature.” Director Paul King decided that he wanted a younger voice and in July it was announced that Ben Whishaw – Q in Skyfall, would be the new voice of the wandering bear. King said he was pleased with the casting. “He breathes and he speaks and he sounds like Paddington, rather then the most beautiful chocolatevoiced man on the planet (Firth).” So there you go!

THE IMITATION GAME TBC RELEASED 14 NOVEMBER

DIRECTOR Morten Tyldum STARRING Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode

DID YOU KNOW?

The time-travelling concept is borrowed from scientific research done by theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, whose big idea is the concept of traversable wormholes through time and space.

Released 60 years after he took his own life, this biopic celebrates wartime codebreaker Alan Turing. Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch plays Turing, the English mathematician and logician credited with decoding the messages encrypted by the ‘unbreakable’ German Enigma machine and changing the course of World War II. Keira Knightley (Atonement) plays his close friend and one-time fiancée, Joan Clarke. The film covers three key periods of Turing’s life: his unhappy teenage years, the success of his secret wartime work for the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, and the tragedy of his post-war decline. Arrested for homosexuality in 1952, Turing was chemically castrated, and then committed suicide in June 1954. The Imitation Game has received great reviews ever since its Toronto Film Festival showing, so put this on your ‘ones to watch’ list. FANATICAL ABOUT FILM 25
