Transformers: Age Of Extinction The ’bots are back in what could be their most explosive adventure yet… ith a new cast, a more serious tone and all the bang and bluster you’d expect from director Michael Bay, Transformers: Age Of Extinction could well be the biggest film in the franchise to date. It opens four years after the Earth was last ravaged in the never-ending fight between the Autobots and the Decepticons. Naturally the human race is feeling

a little bruised and battered, which results in us deciding to tell the good-guy Autobots that they’re just as unwelcome as their nasty robot brethren. And so, with Transformers about as popular as a dose of the flu, the fact that mechanic Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) finds the scrap-metal remains of Autobot leader Optimus Prime (voiced by Transformers legend Peter Cullen) makes him a target for government

forces who aren’t happy about the big metal guy being back on the radar… Add to this the arrival of the Decepticons after they’ve been away to regroup, not to mention the Dinobots – robots shaped like dinosaurs, a staple from the old Transformers cartoons – and the Earth looks as though it’s about to get yet another battering! This will be spectacular entertainment on a grand scale. Don’t miss it!

The Viking villagers of Berk face a new wave of dragons... t’s not every film that can claim to have received a visit from the President of the United States, but apparently the idea of Vikings riding the backs of dragons can even enchant the White House. During the filming of How To Train Your Dragon 2, President Barack Obama (pictured above) stopped by DreamWorks Animation to chat with director Dean DeBlois, who explained the process of motion capture to him. “Wonderful!” replied Obama, as he watched actors wearing

Presidential visits aside, How To Train Your Dragon 2 looks set to be just as much fun as the original film from 2010, with a more grown-up Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his Viking pals accidentally encountering – and then unleashing – a new army of dragons under their mysterious leader, Dragon Rider (Cate Blanchett). Take to the skies with these scaly terrors from 4 July!

Q&A

“Move Over, Tom Cruise!”

How has your life changed since you won Britain’s Got Talent? Everything has changed, from doing TV interviews, performing on stages, meeting new people and celebrities, going to America and now a film! We are just really grateful to all the people that voted for us. How does it feel to have your own film? It feels incredible. I loved every minute of filming it. I didn’t even need my own stunt double because I was that good. Move over, Tom Cruise! I also loved hanging out

with all my co-stars: two horses, some chickens, a pig, cat and lots of dogs. Also, because the film was all about me I was allowed first in line at the lunch queue, which is always a bonus. Tell us about the film... I don’t want to give too much away, but I am the doggy star! The film starts with me all on my own in London. I am happy with this and I don’t need anyone else, until I meet a family that’s a little broken. I cause a lot of trouble and mayhem (which I secretly enjoyed), but I save the day in the end. Does it seem a bit weird, talking with David Walliams’ voice? Ashleigh says I can be very cheeky and make her laugh a lot, so David seems perfect.

What was the best part about making it? My favourite part was all the different stunts I got to do. There’s this one stunt where I had to bound off one of the young boys to make him fall over. I was nervous at first, but once I tried it I wanted to do it again and again. After a few takes, I got a bit carried away and bounded at the boy with a bit too much enthusiasm and accidentally sent him flying... whoops! What was the worst part about making it? Sometimes we had to film in really bad weather. Let me tell you, me and rain do not mix! Ashleigh was prepared for the bad weather, though, and dried me with a special doggy hair dryer, so within no time at all I looked gorgeous again.

The Purge: Anarchy A thrilling night of carnage as another purge begins… orror/thriller The Purge was a big hit last year, and no time has been wasted in getting a second instalment into cinemas. In case you missed the first one, it’s the story of a future-America in which, for 12 hours per year, all laws are revoked and citizens can do anything they want to: including murder! This time around The Purge

H

affects a father (Frank Grillo) who wants to find and kill the murderer of his son, knowing there will be no consequences on this one special night. But as Los Angeles descends into chaos and terror, he meets up with other citizens trying to survive and the night goes from bad to worse… The Purge: Anarchy opens in cinemas on 25 July. fanatical about film 9

WHO ARE THE JERSEY BOYS, THEN?

Clint Eastwood took a chance by casting relative unknowns as his leads, trusting that their talent would shine through. Pictured left to right: Frankie Valli (John Lloyd Young), Bob Gaudio (Erich Bergen), Tommy DeVito (Vincent Piazza, the only actor not to have appeared in the stage version) and Nick Massi (Michael Lomenda).

14 odeon.co.uk

MUSICAL FANS WILL KNOW THE SCORE

The stage show features Frankie and the rest each telling the story their way, which the film retains. “The characters still directly address the audience, just through the camera this time,” says John Lloyd Young. “Part of the reason I think the musical’s so successful is that each guy engages the audience directly in his point of view.”

STAGE EXPERIENCE REALLY HELPED

Erich Bergen played Seasons songwriter Bob Gaudi thousands of times on stage. “I went in for an audition at the last minute,” he recalls. “My agent asked me if I’d be okay learning all this material by the morning. I looked at the script, and I’d said those lines every single day of my life for three years. I think I had it!”

JERSEY BOYS Seeitfrom 20 June

The story of how popular beat combo The Four Seasons and lead singer Frankie Valli rose to fame has been a successful stage musical since 2005. Now it’s been turned into a film, with none other than Clint Eastwood in the director’s chair...

“A day or two before principal photography, Mr Eastwood walked into one of our rehearsals,” says Piazza. “As if the choreography wasn’t difficult enough, he walks in! It certainly was another challenge, but he’s such a lovely guy. He’s a powerful presence and a great leader – you sense it when he walks in the room.”

CHRISTOPHER WALKEN CO-STARS

Walken may be playing a mobster, but the noted Hollywood hoofer may still get to dance. “We’d all been elbowing him a little and seeing if we could persuade him,” says Piazza. “I don’t want to give it away, but there’s a wonderful number near the end of the movie where we may or may not have him dancing!”

IT’S SAFE FOR MUMS

Given that he has to warn his mother about nudity or violence whenever she watches him on TV show Boardwalk Empire, Piazza was happy to make a film she can just enjoy. “My family grew up as fans of the Four Seasons. I flew my parents out to LA to see us shooting the number Sherry. They got to meet Mr Eastwood and Mr Valli, so my mother’s mind was blown!”

The buddy-cop sequel we’ve all been waiting for moves across the road to 22 Jump Street… and its stars go back to college!

A

fter 21 Jump Street was 2012’s smashhit surprise at the box office, it seemed only logical that a sequel would be the next move for young cops Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill). “I’d never done a sequel before to any of the movies that I was in, and that was because I thought it couldn’t be as good, or better,” explains Hill, who came up with the story for this film when an idea hit him: “I thought about the premise of the second one going to college, and there 16 odeon.co.uk

hasn’t been a great college movie of our generation yet…” And so what we have in 22 Jump Street, in which Jenko and Schmidt go undercover in a university to unmask a criminal ring, is an attempt to make cult American classic comedy Animal House for the 21st century. BUDDY BROMANCE Of course there’s more to it than that; like the first film, in which the two guys teamed up for the first time and pretended to be high school students while sniffing out

some drug dealers, there’s an underlying theme of friendship and a central bromance. While the first story focused on Jenko and Schmidt meeting and getting to know each other, 22 Jump Street takes it to the next step. “The movie’s really about ‘can you recreate the magic of that first time that you meet somebody, those first dates?’” says codirector Phil Lord. “How do you sustain that over the course of a relationship? Or in our case, a movie.” As the undercover agents work to find the criminals they

have to get used to university life, getting the chance to forget about being serious grown-ups for a while as they have fun. Not that they were particularly serious to begin with, mind you, as the film’s propensity for adlibbing reflects; the filmmakers also kept the camera running between some takes to capture the actors goofing around. HAVING A LAUGH “Sometimes we have to remind ourselves to shoot the thing that’s on the page at all,” laughs Lord. “It’s definitely a free for

all. We’re writers, Jonah’s a writer, Channing’s now a writer. We’re all sitting there and we have a writer on set. So I would say we pretty quickly diverge from what’s on the page.” Assuming 22 Jump Street is a hit, what does the future hold for Jenko and Schmidt? Will there be a 23 Jump Street? “Well, everyone will really expect the third one to suck, so we can only do better than the expectations!” teases Hill. In the meantime, check out their latest case – in cinemas from 6 June! fanatical about film 17

Mrs Brown’s Boys D’MOVIE TBC RELEASED 27 JUNE DIRECTOR Ben Kellett STARRING Brendan O’Carroll, Jennifer Gibney, Fiona O’Carroll, Eilish O’Carroll

U

nlikely sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys has become a genuine phenomenon over the last few years, romping to the front of the queue when it comes to ratings in its BBC1 time slot and managing to win the hearts of a nation – despite some rather naughty language and situations! It was only a matter of time before Agnes herself (or himself, seeing as she’s played by writer/creator Brendan O’Carroll) made the 20 odeon.co.uk

leap to the big screen. And seeing as the appeal of Mrs Brown is now reaching other countries – Australia is a recent convert, as the stage show has toured there – Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie could even become a global smash! For those unfamiliar with the television series, Agnes Brown is a no-nonsense Irish mum who spends most of her time meddling in the affairs of her huge family. Confusingly, her daughter is played by

O’Carroll’s real-life wife and the rest of his family also snag roles in the show, which is often ad-libbed and performed without retakes if something goes wrong. The film version promises all the same laughs, shocks and catchphrases, as Mrs Brown and her gang battle to save their market stall from ruthless developers. Craziness ensues – all of it rather rude! As O’Carroll himself observes, “We’re not the Waltons, that’s for sure...”

Jersey Boys TBC RELEASED 20 JUNE

DIRECTOR Clint Eastwood STARRING John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Vincent Piazza, Christopher Walken

Did You Know?

The 2013 Christmas Day episode of Mrs Brown’s Boys was the most-watched programme in the UK with 9.4 million viewers – even beating Doctor Who!

The Hollywood legend that is Clint Eastwood directs this film adaptation of the incredibly successful stage musical (currently playing in London’s West End, as well as on Broadway in New York). Jersey Boys tells the story of Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons, a group of singers from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey, who managed to find fame and fortune thanks to such songs as Sherry, Who Loves You, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like A Man and Working My Way Back To You. The story follows the singers as they go from obscurity to national fame, thanks to appearances on such classic old-time shows as American Bandstand. Keeping the format from the stage show, Jersey Boys features stunning musical numbers, solid performances from a cast of relative unknowns (plus Christopher Walken) and the gimmick of each singer breaking the ‘fourth wall’ to talk directly to the audience.
